“Debbie Macomber writes characters that are as warm and funny as your best friends.”
—Susan Wiggs

“Debbie Macomber’s name on a book is a guarantee of warm-hearted, endearing romance that will captivate and charm her legions of readers.”
—Jayne Ann Krentz

#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber—winner of numerous accolades and honors, including the Romance Writers of America’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award—writes romance novels that warm the heart and lift the spirit like none other. In Touched by Angels, the beloved author of Mrs. Miracle showcases three of her most popular characters: the well-meaning if somewhat dizzy heavenly helpers, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. Macomber’s delightful angelic trio alights in New York City in Touched by Angels, and before they re-enter the Pearly Gates, they need to answer the prayers of a troubled school teacher, a shy and lonely young woman, and a wannabe Broadway actress a long way from home.

Reviews (203)

The Big Apple will never be the same after this trio of Angels has been there.

Lives are ensnared when Shirley, Goodness and Mercy take over on earth in New York City. Brynn, Hannah and Jenny are young woman facing trials and changes. Brynn goes from a Catholic Girls' School to an inner City school which is not only co-ed, but full of troubled teens; Hannah is being pushed into an engagement to the Rabbi's son even though neither one loves the other; Jenny has been trying to break onto the Broadway Stage for 3 years with no luck. Enter the angelic trio, and watch things happen....even the Statue of Liberty is no left untouched.

I enjoyed this trio of December holiday stories

I enjoyed this trio of December holiday stories, as unlike many "inspirational" books they had Catholic and Jewish characters as well as a Protestant (no denomination given) one. In so many books of this type, the religion is rather vaguely evangelical Protestant, so for those of us who are not members of one of those churches, this book is a refreshing change. Ms Macomber also tackles two controversial subjects in the Catholic-themed story -- birth control and bullying. This makes the book a little edgier than most of her stories, but I applaud the chance she took in discussing these issues. While the main character comes out for abstaining from premarital sex, she also discusses safe sex for those who are not ready or interested in abstaining, even if it means a challenge to the beliefs of her church. The other two stories are more conventional Macomber -- a Jewish girl who has to chose between two men, even if it means bringing unhappiness to her parents, and the final story of a country girl in the Big Apple trying to make it on Broadway. In the latter story there was a nice piece at Ellis Island about an immigrant ancestor. This book had more sex of the heavy necking and petting variety than in many of the Angel series. Good narrative writing but nothing literary, and realistic dialog. A feel good story for the holidays.

Learning to Dream and accepting the consequences

This is the 3rd book in this series and the 3 angels once again take on more than they realize. I’m not sure why I didn’t find these stories as interesting and amusing as I found the earlier ones. Perhaps it is because the situations are darker and the romance more forced than before. There are fun episodes like having the Statue of Liberty decide to rotate around on her pedestal or large flakes of snow falling from a cloudless sky, but the end results of each of the 3 situations seems forced and abrupt rather than a consequence of the earlier actions.

A good read.

You can never go wrong with a Debbie MacComber book. It has been awhile since I have read this book and don't remember much about it. I read various authors and 2-3 novels per week. So just take my word for it, read al her novels you can get your hands on. You won't be sorry and you will be delightfully entertained.

Mayhem and mirth, the series is great fun!

A good heartfelt story, but still filled wth personal struggles, sadness, love. Throw in the quirky angels, and you will have a great time. There is sadness, but we our humans find the strength to overcome, in each other! Enjoy

Everyone loves these crazy, fun rascally angels and the way they work

Shirley Goodness and Mercy are back for another Christmas of Mischief and mayhem as they blunder their way through their prayer assignments as they try to solve problems and help their girls end up happy and in love. You can’t help but smile when these three angels get together and get in trouble!

I Enjoyed Reading this Story!

I Truly loved this story and the caricatures in this book. I cannot say which character is my favorite the ones that have family members praying for them. This is the last book in this series.

Good for youth

This is a cute book for a 10-12 year old. I was looking for a light science fiction with spiritual underpinning. I guess I’m not the authors target audience. Moved slowly explaining everything .

Touched by Angels

I love Touched by Angels! I love this angel series! My cousin recommend this series. She read a book a day and said she hated for the series to end. I agree with her. I give Touched by Angels 5 stars*****! I will be starting Shirley,Goodness & Mercy tonight!

Angelic Capers

Just as the reader becomes involved with each relationship there seems to be some problem which must require heaven!y intervention. Apparent lack of experience does little to dissuade these young angels. Their discussions are priceless.

Light, fluffy book with three happy endings

Pretty standard light-hearted romance novel with feisty but conflicted females, reluctant but intrepid males, and a host of complications that everyone can see coming from miles away. A pleasant, light read at Christmas time. I decided to buy this book because of the clever "hook" of the 3 angels: Shirley, Goodness and Mercy (love that!) but the angels were actually just kind of superfluous to the plot. I guess I was thinking more of Janet Evanovich and her Diesel series rather than this piece of fluff. It was OK if you just want a soft, predictable, chaste romance to pass a couple of hours.

Oh those Anges

I Love Debbie Macomber's Christmas Stories. Shirley,Goodness, and, Mercy are up to their antics saving. Three different Christmas Wishes sent to heaven. There are funny, sad and surprising moments throughout the book. I highly recommend these books.

Angels everywhere book 3

I love this author. Always waiting to see what the three angels are getting into next. Always watching for the next book

Faith and Love

With a little faith and a whole lot of love miracles do happen! Enlightening and full of twist and turns and delightful to read.

VERY GOOD

Again, Debbie Mcomber doesn't disappoint with her escapades of the angels: Shirley, Goodness and Mercy guided by the archangel Gabriel. Great names for angels! This time they are involved with a young teacher fresh out of college who wants to make a difference in the lives of high school students in a downtown high school in New York City. The problems she faces with the students and her love life are followed in this story. The only reason I didn't give a five star rating is because of the expletives. In my opinion, not necessary.

Touched by Angles By Debbie Macomber

An awesome read! Actually, with Angels doing their best to help a situation -- one can expect a perfect solution. Angeline

The way the different.stories come together with special outcomes.

I. R. eally like the different stories bring the different day's the love is displayed. I was amazed of how the. Angels.played with the outcome.

Who doesn't love Angels!

I've enjoyed the books I've read in the "Angel Series". Good, clean romance, with drama mixed in. But I felt things wrapped up a little too quickly at the end.

Three angels

I love these three angels Shirley Goodness and Mercy. Once again a great story. I even enjoyed Gabriel the archangel .

Touching read

3 antes are sent to influence the lives of 3 mortals and using their specific powers guide them a life of happiness. Fun read for anyone

Love it

Love the 3 Angels - all 3 books. Wish Debbie Macomber would write some more with them as subjects.

Great book series. Felt there could be several more adventures for your angels.

Such a sweet and enjoyable series. The angel’s definitely have more possible adventure in their future. Hope to read more of the adventures of Shirley, Goodness & Mercy

An absolute winner for Debbie Macomber

You just can't beat a Debbie Macomber Christmas angel book for an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas read! I loved the way Shirley, Goodness and Mercy eventually "led" these three couples to their "heaven sent" destinations of true love. Three delightfully interferring angels with true hearts of gold that never seem to follow (or do they?) Gabriel's specific instructions! I highly recommend this book!

Superb reading!!!

I bought this book because the author is a very talented lady!

Very entertainin

As there Angels with three different people to help and as usual, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy help each other to help each person the way they should.

Christmas Story

Story of three angels who come to help 3 couples find each other. A great Christmas story any one would enjoy.

Nice novel set during the holiday season

Brynn, Hannah, and Jenny all have dreams. Brynn is a teacher who dreams of making a difference in her students' lives, even if Roberto Alcantara thinks she is in over her head. Hannah is so used to following her parents' wishes that she is engaged to one man, Carl, while in love with another, Joshua. Small-town girl Jenny's dreams of becoming a star on Broadway are growing dimmer by the day and she misses her family - and Trey LaRue. All three must learn to follow their hearts and they'll have some help along the way from three angels - Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. First released in 1995, "Touched by Angels" is a cute, at times poignant, novel set in New York at Christmas time (this is one novel, not three separate stories). Of the three women, I found Brynn's story to be the deepest, saddest, and most realistic, (outside of the discussion she has with her students regarding sex which felt out of place and merely a plot device). Author Debbie Macomber touches on several issues in this story that she normally stays away from and handles them all deftly (have a tissue nearby when reading this - there are some genuinely sad moments in this book). Macomber does a pretty good job of showing what life is like in a school in a poor neighborhood and doesn't sugarcoat the story - not everyone has a happy ending. The Brynn/Roberto romance is a pleasant surprise as Macomber's romances are almost always lily-white. The Hannah/Joshua story was my next favorite. While I sometimes wished Hannah would get a backbone, the chemistry between her and Joshua is well done (and very romantic) as are the family dynamics (I also like the fact that Macomber included a Jewish family in what could be considered a Christmas book). Hannah's struggles to please everyone instead of listening to her heart was very believable. Jenny's story was my least favorite of the three, mainly because there didn't seem to be much chemistry between her and Trey (I think this is because they already knew and cared for each other - readers had no chance to see the romance developing). As for the three angels, the story could easily have worked without them (and in fact they disappear for long periods of time) but they add a nice touch of humor to the story. "Touched by Angels" is a nice novel set during the holiday season.

The first book I read in this series was book #4 and loved it, so started with book 1

Ms Macomber found herself in this one... The first book I read in this series was book #4 and loved it, so started with book 1. Although book 1 and 2 were good they weren't as good as book 4 and the air about them were a bit different. BUT this book was very nice! Although the middle seemed to kind of 'got stuck' and the ending was hurried up until the end I would have given this a 5 star rating but the end was hurried into one chapter after being dragged out for about 10. But still a good book. The stories in this book is a country girl moves to the big city to find her dreams but is that really where her dreams is? Or was it really in her back yard all along? The next is a teacher wanting to make a difference to high school kids that lives in a bad part of town. Kids that everyone seemed to have given up on and in the process she finds herself. And the last story in this book was about a Jewish girl that was her parents only child and all her life had done exactly what was expected of her to make her parents happy. But when her heart is telling her something different will she go with her heart and 'disappoint' her parents? Along the way these people have three special prayer angels helping them along their way. 2nd personal favorite in the series through book 4. All have been good just book 3 and 4 better than books 1 and 2

Pleasant re-release of older title, 3 1/2 stars

While it's not clear from the cover, "Touched by Angels" is new release of a book that was originally written in 1995. Some of the technology has been updated for this release to make it more believable to today's audience. (For example, characters now use cell phones.) The book is about three angels - Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy - who are being sent to Earth for the third holiday season in a row, to help answer someone's prayers. This year, the angels have been assigned to three young women in New York City. Goodness is assigned to Hannah Morganstern to make sure she becomes happily married. Hannah is almost engaged to Carl Rabinsky, a rabbi's son. It seems Carl will make a perfect husband, but Hannah and Goodness may have other ideas. Mercy is assigned to help Jenny Lancaster make it back to her hometown in Montana for Christmas. However, Jenny has much more on her mind than how to make it home. She could be on the verge of making her dreams of becoming a Broadway star come true, but what about her dreams of love? Shirley is responsible for helping Brynn Cassidy, a young teacher that wants to make a difference in the lives of her inner-city students. Brynn wants to help, but it looks like the inexperienced teacher, as well as her guardian angel, may both be in over their heads. While the three angels interact in short passages throughout the book, the stories of Hannah, Jenny, and Brynn are completely separate. It's really like three shorter novellas in one book. The angels are always looking out for the best for their charges on earth, even if their "boss", the angel Gabriel, doesn't always agree with their methods. The three angels are amusing and have great insights into the actions of others. However as characters, the personalities of the three angels blend together for me and the book would be better if the three angels were more distinct. I enjoyed reading about the everyday struggles of Brynn and her budding romance with one of her student's older brother the most out of the three stories. This story is the most dramatic and has the most depth and realism, yet is the most moving out of the three. Brynn is caring and kind, but tough enough to make it in a challenging environment even when faced with tragedy. It is realistic love story between two people from different worlds, as well as the power of dreams and education for young people. Brynn is an inspirational character to whom readers can relate. If only the other heroines in the book were as likeable as Brynn! Hannah is sweet and wants to do the right thing, but instead ends up leading on two men and making everyone miserable until the very end. Maybe she needed a bit more guidance from Goodness, because her story starts to drag on until I began to think maybe Hannah and Carl deserved each other and her new love interest, Joshua, should move on! Jenny's story had potential, but the ending seems forced. Jenny has settled in and made new friends in New York, but so far a job as a singing waitress is the closest she has come to her dream of performing on Broadway. I like the friendship between Jenny and her roommate Michelle, also an aspiring singer/dancer, and the way they support each other even when they are competing with each other for roles. The love story between Jenny and Trey, the rancher from Montana, falls flat for me. There is no doubt the two love each other, but I wish their story would have ended a little differently. Jenny says she is happy with the way things turn out, but as a reader, I felt cheated and thought Jenny got cheated as well. Overall, the book is pleasant, light reading for the holidays. The angels come to New York as an answer to a prayer, but the book is not at all "preachy". There are some passionate kissing scenes, but it's definitely an inspirational and not a steamy romance. While Hannah and Jenny's stories are a bit lacking, the story of Brynn and her students make the book worthwhile. Fans of Debbie Macomber that missed this book the first time around may want to give it a try this holiday season. This review was originally written for The Season E-Zine. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

Heavenly

Deadline for love

Awesome! The Trio are back! Can they fulfill the lonely hearts wish? See how they cope causing a bit of mayhem in the process. If you love a good story filled with humour, mayhem, romance and leaving you smiling then this is for you. Absolutely must read

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy keep you smiling

Purchased this book on audio CD along with the other two "Angel" books in the trilogy. Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy do their best to help there prayer assignments in New York, without causing too much "trouble" for archangel, Gabriel. Enjoyable romance with happily ever after and read well enough to keep me away while driving in the car. Recommend this story and all three books for those looking for a sweet romance.

merry christmas...

Goodness, Mercy and Shirley, 3 sometimes faulty guardian angels, are given three new charges in New York. A novice teacher in an inner city school, a Montana maiden who aspires to be a broadway singer, and a New York city girl-a sweetheart betrothed to a man she doesn't love but who her parents adore. Like many Macomber books this one deals with the loves of the everyday person and the hopes and heartaches they sometimes face. A sweet, romantic tale-a good lighthearted book to curl up with this holiday season:)-Merry Christmas!

Happy endings

This is third in a series. It's an enjoyable, easy read following the efforts of three angels who break lots of rules while helping the people they're assigned to. If you like happy endings this is a good series.

Great read!!

Great book for any age reader.

Real and Refreshing

What a delightful read! I enjoyed this story. The plot was intriguing, the characters were likable, the dialogue was creative and Debbie's storytelling style is real yet refreshing! :)

Can’t wait

Next on my list . Love Debbie Macomber’s books

What's not to love...

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are maturing angels but can still find mischief in trying to help their charges. Humans certainly can be stubborn they discover.

Five Stars

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE all of Debbie Macomber's Christmas books; especially the ones with angels. Keep 'em coming!

a cute romance!

I enjoy the way Macomber wrote about 3 separate situations, connected thru angels. I was losing hope in the depth of the book until tradgedy struck and the angels had to figure a way to resolve everything. Was very sweet in the end. A good light read.

Great book

... book I have read of the angels and just loved all the stories

First book I have read of the angels and just loved all the stories. Another Great book by Debbie!!!!!

Delightful

Debbie Macomber has done it again. These 3 angels and Gabriel are absolutely the best and the characters they "manage" are also good. I look forward to these books each year.

Touched

Love this book. It has twists and turns and a great outcome with some realistic not so great endings. I would recommend to 25 and over.

Didn't Like

I didn't like the way she skipped from one angel to the other in a chapter. I like books that flow. I just skipped around in it after reading half of it and made myself do that.

A fun read

Debbie McComber writes such delightful stories! This one so full of Shirley, Goodness and Mercy, angels who come down to earth to help humans find the right way to go. Their help isn't always approved by Gabriel, but they get the job done! Another fun read from Debbie.
