Hans Christian Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales

It’s a beautiful book! I actually first saw it in Costco but decided to order it from Prime instead. It was a little more expensive but that didn’t matter to me. I was never read stories when I was a kid and I just wanted one I could read as an adult. So far so good! The book itself is really well made and I love the gold flake on the page edges.

This is a review of the kindle edition of Hans Christian Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales. I notice that most of the reviews for it are for the hardcover edition. Paper and print quality for this edition were not an issue. The version I had was free of any illustrations except for the cover art. I was reading an older speech or essay by Daisaku Ikeda in either the World Tribune or Living Buddhism a while back in which he referred to a story by Hans Christian Anderson called “The Silver Shilling.” It occurred to me then that not only had I never heard of this particular story before, but I had never read any of Hans Christian Anderson’s stories in their original format. By this, of course, I mean a good translation as they were originally written in Danish. This book has no mention of who the translator was. There are 127 stories in this collection of which I only know about ten or twelve, and not all of them very well. Even of the ones I thought I knew pretty well, some as they are presented here are so different from the frequent retellings you hear most often as to be almost unrecognizable. “The Red Shoes” for example is much different from the version you usually see. “The Fir Tree” is probably the story I know the best. It usually finds its way into Christmas anthologies because of the little fir tree’s experience one year as a Christmas tree. It is substantially the same as the story I know. The designation of fairy tales for these stories is surprising, as fairies are not mentioned in no more than three of them and elves in perhaps as many as five. Much more common are stories featuring birds, flowers, or inanimate objects who talk and act very much like people. In one case there is a bottle neck that has a surprisingly long story. There are also several life stories of pretty much average people; some of them live good lives and end by going to heaven and meeting someone they had lost. Others do not live so well and die very unhappy. There are three or four stories of boys and girls who played happily together as children but were later separated in one way or another. Some of these children were later reunited. Others drift away and never find each other again. Angels feature prominently in some of the stories. Almost all of the stories have a moral of some sort. There is also an unexpectedly large number of stories of the lives of prominent artists or writers, occasionally as viewed by the flowers or birds that lived in their yards. Most of these were Scandinavian artists so I didn’t recognize many of them. They almost invariably died young, however.

The book came in really good shape, but has some damage to the top... but I sort of expected it because it was marked as a used book. All of the pages look clean though and the spine looks to be in really good condition. Overall, I’m happy with this purchase!

Its got these beautiful illustrations on the cover and on the back. The pages are golden lined and it comes with a ribbon bookmark. The cover is leather-bound and just looks beautiful. I took photos of the table of contents so people reading this review can see what stories are included. The most popular stories it includes are The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, and The Princess and the Pea. If you want more, it's got over 100 stories in it. When I'm done reading this book, I will be displaying it on my bookshelf because it's to pretty not to. I can't wait to buy more collections from this company. I'm totally getting the Grimm Brothers one.

I think that better reviewers than I have "done" Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales better justice than I can! See, for example, [...] This edition avoids the main complaint about translations of Andersen's works by having all the Tales but one translated from the original Danish by Jean Hersholt [1886 - 1956 ]. Hersholt was a Danish actor and philanthropist who emigrated to the US in 1913 and became popular and fluent in English. Hersholt was an avid fan of Andersen's work and published his "The Complete Andersen" in six volumes in 1949, which included works from his own private collection which had not previously been published, not even in Danish, by Andersen. This edition includes one tale, "The Tallow Candle", an early work of Andersen's, written whilst he was at school, which is not translated by Hersholt as it was not discovered until 2012! The binding and presentation of this edition is superb, and I'm glad I bought it - my children love the stories as I read them to them, too, even if they'll be grown up by the time I finish them!

I personally love the cover and the fact that it is the complete story collection. I don’t mind that there isn’t any pictures because I am not reading this to any children. However, I think there is a sense of beauty in using your own imagination to bring these stories to life! And for those people saying it is tiny print. It really isn’t.. it is the standard 12pt New Times Roman font. We are so used to reading things on our phones or computers which are typically in a larger font so I think some people forget that traditionally books were/are printed this way. So keep that in mind when you are purchasing books if you aren’t an avid reader. I love this book and I am so happy with this purchase!

nice! is still in good condition. i’m assuming this was a library book because there was a tracker and a sticker on it. i took them off and it’s mostly fine. overall satisfied

In excellent condition for a used book. Love the cover artwork and front page artwork. Includeds a introduction with a picture of Hans C. Andersen. Includeds a green book marker that is built into the binding. The pages are a nice thickness and have a nice gold trim. I will probably read the ugly ducking first as I am a big swan princess fan and for my second story I am undecided. I consider this very collectible and giftable.

This book was so pretty and so nice. Not only is every story written in there, but they’re all dated in the table of contents. You know what year each story was written. It’s a beautiful leather hardback book with the book marker sewn into the spine. They really don’t manufacture books quite like this very often anymore.

It it sometimes hard to tell if something is going to be good quality or junk when you buy it on Amazon. Luckily, this product turned out to be nice. As others have noted, the pages are thin, but I didn't care about that. For me, the book is more decorative, so I don't know if it would hold up well with heavy reading. It serves my purpose.

Though i havent yet dove into the book yet the book is absolutely beautiful the binding does appear to be fragile but all pages are in tact. The typing is smaller than i would have liked as well. However so far it is beautifully made. Cant wait to dive into it!

I bough it for myself but ended up reading it to my little sister (4). We love it, the whole family has enjoyed the book, and it contains beautiful stories. The pages and the cover itself are soooo cute it’s impossible to not fall in love with it.

Classic stories from the source! I bought this so that I could read it to my children before bed. They really love the stories and I feel like it's better than watching their movie counterparts. I feel like the morals are still applicable even in this modern age and perfect for young listeners/readers. The stories aren't that difficult to read however they do read better when spoken aloud adding emphasis when storytelling. Pros: All of the Fairy Tales we know in one beautifully bound book Very easy to read, even better when read aloud Cons: Pages are a bit on the thinner side and can tear easily if mishandled Overall: The book is a great gift for a young reader, an eager listener, or for someone who just wants to add this beautiful book to their libraries!

Bought this as a present for my daughter. She loves it.

Again, I'm going to state that asking one to describe plot and characters to a book one just received and has not yet read in order to write a review is utterly ridiculous. However, I ordered this as a gift and it is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. The book is leather bound and in excellent condition with gold rimmed pages and cloth book bookmark. I am so elated with this book I may have to order another for myself. The type is smaller than one would hope, but for a collector of classic literature it is a beautiful edition to add to one's collection!! Also, my order arrived several days early which has almost never happened!!

This is a beautiful collection of words. Some are not well known and reading those has been such fun! The cover is gorgeous. The spine has an eye catching design as well.

I love it!

This is the second time ordering. First one was a gift off our baby registry. We had received a copy where the cover was only half printed, so that was unfortunately returned. I waited to reorder when the price was right (it had gone up from what I received on the return). New copy was in perfect condition. Great addition to library. Can’t wait to start reading to the little one.

The stories are probably in their original version without any editing for kids to read by themselves. My 8 year old started reading today about chopping Witch's head off and just couple stories down to "Big Clause and Little Clause", she ask me why they killed their own grandmother for money, chopping off her head and later committed suicide by drowning themselves. I know fairy tales has it's dark sides, like Cinderella had to edit out parts such as cutting off toes to fit the shoe...etc, but for a book rated for 8-12 yrs old, I was expecting a Disney-fied version. This can be a collector item to read for adult or kids from the 19th century. But I don't think it's appropriate for young kids these days to read on their own without parental guidance.

Arrived on time. Packaged nicely. Book looks as pictured. I gave 4/5 * as these are not the true original stories. However take note, these are NOT books for children. It will take a young adult/adult to appreciate them. While still horrific tales, they are not the originals, which is why I purchased & needed this book to cite facts for a paper. If it’s for your enjoyment as a literary fan, such as myself, it’s fine. While it did not serve my purpose for purchasing, I’m happy I bought it for my collection.

Great stories written in wonderful old English which adds to the beauty of each story. As a child I had a two book set of these stories, and loved them!! I lost them along the way in life and was thrilled to see they are still printing them! This is a lovely collection!

It’s even more lovely in person, w/its vibrant colors & gilt edged pages. There is also embossing in the bonded leather hardcover which adds a distinguished air to the tome. This will make a welcome addition to anyone’s library, young or old. Go for it, you won’t be disappointed!

The book is high quality with beautiful binding and pages are edged in gold. A real collector's book. However, I was looking for a collection of bed time stories to read to my four year old. There are no illustrations and the print is small. The language is rich but too old fashioned for my four year old. This is a book for adults.

And the Capitol is very near his birthplace in Odense... i.e., Hans Christian Andersen, 1805-1875. He's always been a national idol there... as his Fairy Tales r most remarkable & even pertinent for today's youth... which r frequently ethical & moral precepts also pertaining to all ages... e.g., IMHO....

This collection of stories is perfect. I have bought 19 of the Canterbury Classic Leather Bound books. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! The quality is incomparable. The acid free paper. The gold gilded page edges are lovely to look at, and a joy to turn. They all have a built in ribbon bookmark. 2018. My resolution was to start my home library; compiling the classics first. And, these are must have classics for anyone who genuinely loves books.

I almost didn’t buy this book but SO glad I did! One of the best purchases I have ever made for my 8 year old last Christmas (yes I am writing a late review). The binding and cover were gorgeous and well made. It is also his complete works. What an amazing price too:)

I bought this book as a gift and as a collectible item it is absolutely STUNNING. However I can't imagine that in the era of iPods and smart phones I can attract a child to read with such a small font size. For this reason I have to return this book.

A book full of fantasy, enchantment, and a fair amount of death. Perhaps not the fairy tales you remember as told by cartoons and children’s books. The source material, much like Grimm’s, is excellent.

Got my Copy today came in perfect packaging. The Book is the most divine Hans Christian Andersen's Copy of ever seen. The Details from the front cover to the spine of the book are all beautifully leather bound with engraved details down to the roses shining a beautiful holographic Red! That doesn't include the golden pages! Has all of the works of hans christian Andersen. Perfect book for anyone interested to purchase.

I was very disappointed to find no illustrations. It is a beautiful book, nice cover, gold edging on pages, and the paper is very thin with tiny print. The language seems authentic and not ' Americanized'. It is nice to have the complete collection for its historical value, but fairy tales with no illustrations seems just wrong. I think people are likely to assume there will be illustrations so that should have been .edu more clear in the product description.

The stories are excellent. I got this book for my 8 year old, but the print is too small. Very hard for my kids to read.

As a child, I used to pore over my aunt's copy. As a grandmother, I remembered it and decided I needed it for the grandkids. A great deal of it may be over a child's head, so it is nice for a grown-up to read aloud as there is something for the grownup to think about also. Some tales are terribly sad. So if you have very serious children or grandchildren, you might want to pre-read and decide if it would be too much for your child.

Small print but otherwise great.

Purchased for a classroom Library. My kids loved it. The stories can be a little dark, so I probably wouldn’t recommend for kids under 8. The quality is amazing! Such a beautifully made book.

Lots of good stories

Purchased for my 2 nieces for Christmas. Not exactly what I expected, however, it’s loaded with wonderful stories! No pictures, but beautifully bound and the gilt edges are a nice touch. A little much for very young unless you’re reading to them.

They tell you to not judge a book by its cover but this book's cover is gorgeous amd the content is amazing.

I will need a magnifying glass to read this book. The gilt edge of the book is nice, but I was hoping for some illustrations my granddaughter could look at while I read to book, with my magnifying glass.

I really enjoyed these fairy tales written in the 1800's. They may be for children, but I am a senior, and I enjoyed them very much. It's for all ages. They are not as gruesome as the Grimm brothers fairy tales, although I enjoyed them too.

Collection of great story tales in a great, leather-bound high quality book. Only complaint is that the binding was slightly rippled and lifting off the leather cover, but otherwise the book feels and looks like a keeper to display in any serious collector's library. Would buy again and was shipped quickly!

Although received late and defective, I got to read a few stories and it is very interesting, especially with the twists these stories have compared to the Disney and other movie versions. great book, would recommend this book to those who love to read and know the actual stories of these characters.

This is just what I wanted! As a fan of classics, this collection was just what I needed for my, well, collection. It’s darling to look at and, well, the contents speak for themselves.

It is just what I expected with the convenience of being able to tote it around. I read the stories to my sister when she was in the hospital and it reminded us both of when we were children and read fairy tales to each other at night before bed. Peace, Susan

Bought for nostalgia value for my granddaughters birthday. I read these stories often as a child into my teen years. I was delightfully surprised by the "feel" of this book, it feels rich. VERY well made/bound it should last her for years. The ribbon page marker is a wonderful addition to this book.

This book is complete with every fairytale. Stories i remember from when i was a kud and stories from many generations ago.

The most complete volume of Andersen's tales I've found so far, and well made too. The binding seems like pretty good quality, the pages have gilded edges, and there's a cloth bookmark inside. I bought a copy for myself and a few as gifts. These seem like the original versions of the tales as well...

1. Very few illustrations, like one small illustration every 200 pages. 2. Very tiny print, 6-8 point font. 3. Incomplete. It was missing about 6 tales. 4. The table of contents is NOT alphabetical so it takes forever to find the tale you're looking for. 5. NO index at all. I was so disappointed in this. It's not complete and it's not really illustrated. Combine that with the teeny tiny font and thin paper and this book is not worth your money.

The book is really pretty but I was disappointed with the binding. The book is made in China. The binding on the bottom part of the book is coming apart. I might be able to glue it back together but this is really a shame. Books like this are meant to be passed down, not sure this will make it. So, what's wrong with getting it made in the USA? I would gladly pay the extra for a well made book.

I purchased this specifically because it said leather-bound. I figured it was too good to be true as the price was so low, but it did say Leather bound. Alas the old saying if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

This book offers many nights of story time. I read my daughter 5-6 pages every night for bedtime. I haven't read most of these stories, so it is also very interesting for me!

Very nice hard copy. Great to read all the tales we grew up with as kids and are now the basis for popular animated movies.

Classic tales all right there.

I am fascinated by old fairy tales (and a bit shocked to think of some of them being read to small children!) In the Kindle edition, I could not finish a tale because of the constant page shifting--sometimes to dozens of pages ahead. I deleted it.

Hardback: This is the smallest print I've ever seen in a book, almost unreadable. It is not appropriate for children of the ages and grade levels recommended for the book. There are no illustrations. Maybe for adults but not kids. I'd attach a picture, but have already returned the book.

Classic but writing is very small

Got this for my grand daughter. She seems to enjoy the stories. She is 4 years old.

The book is a nice size and the kids love it.

Unfortunately the type size is very small. In an attempt to produce the books inexpensively they printed a large volume of material in small type to reduce the number of pages. As it is few children would ever read them and adults woulkls be hard pressed to do so also.

Great stories. I read them to my daughter most evenings. It's fun going back and re-reading all the old tales.

The book arrived this morning and it was in perfect condition. So happy!

Beautiful book, but has no photos.

I just appropriated an electronic version of the book, so the problem of bad binding won't concern me, but Anderson? Really? AndersOn? In three places?! How ignorant and lazy was the handler of the book?! I hope the stories will be right. I have many versions of these beloved tales, because with different translations the stories are slightly different, but please fix that shameful mistake with the name. It's Andersen. Always was, always will be. If you don't fix it, electronic readers will lose the book anyway.
