For Whom the Ball Rolls is a kids book but it successfully deals with a number of mature themes: parental abandonment, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Stoicism. While the kids may not notice it, there are pretty strong lessons attached that, like the title, spring from Ernest Hemingway. These intertwined themes are the priority of action over feeling and the fact that human beings have some choice as to how they view the world. First, like clients of behavioral psychologists, the protagonists learn that what they do becomes what they are. If you act lovingly towards somebody you love them no matter what you may feel. Similarly, human beings can choose to focus on all that is wrong with the world or on what is right. Where one persons sees crowds of hypocritical lives, pollution and the extinction of much of the biosphere another can choose to focus on decreasing levels of abject poverty, technological improvement and a growing recognition of the rights of all men and women. Hemingway obviously deals with Stoic themes more profoundly throughout his writings than does Dog-Man. But for someone like me who tends to think these are good ideas, introducing them to kids in an age appropriate way is actually kind of important. And yet, the book isn’t preachy or heavy at all. It’s a good choice for parents who want their children to get some solid nourishment along with the usual silliness of a Dav Pilkey book. Highly recommended.

I bought this book as a part of a 'buy two, get one free' offer. I had never heard of this series of books before. What got my attention was the clever title. I bought it in the hope that the book would be as clever as the title. As a free book, I definitely paid too much. Unlike other one star reviews, I found nothing wrong with the book's construction, the printing, or the text. The colors are great, the binding is solid, the text is clear and readable. I have not read the other books in the series so I don't have the advantage of a historical background, but the story line comes across fairly obviously. I guess I wasn't expecting the level of dysfunctional relationships that I found in this graphic novel. I don't find the problematic relationships illustrated in the stories very interesting. Incredibly neurotic story lines. I don't find the characters to be funny, I find them to be pathetic. I enthusiastically say: NOT RECOMMENDED.

My son was waiting by the door for his pre-order to arrive! He was so excite and cannot wait to read this sequel and the next one in December!!!

I don't really get the Dog Man books. My son has so many other book series that I enjoy much more. However, these aren't for me, they're for him and he absolutely loves them. He gets so excited every time a new book is released, and this book was no different. He thinks they are hilarious and he read the entire book the day he got it. He re-reads them over and over. I love that he gets so excited and enjoys reading them. I prefer these to the Captain Underpants series- I find Dog Man to be funnier and more age appropriate for a second grader. (There are a lot of behaviors in the Captain Underpants series that my son gets in trouble for replicating!) I wish that the spelling was correct, (while I understand why it's wrong... because it's written by "kids") it can be confusing for a child learning to read/spell correctly. Ultimately though, these are fun books that kids enjoy reading.

My boys (7 and 4) were beyond excited when this arrived! My 7 year old read it cover to cover in one sitting and laughed out loud multiple times. I read it to my 4 year old and was genuinely surprised by how deep the main storyline was! Great message, some really beautiful illustrations that I really enjoyed along with the same silliness, humor, and great characters my kiddos love. We can't wait for the next one.

I think these are popular in my daughters school because she started recently asking for Dog Man comics. I've been doing a great job securing these at the local library but with all the libraries closed at the moment I decided to buy her a few. We went through all the Dog Man's on Amazon and this is one of 2 that she chose. She's just getting comfortable with reading and a few weeks ago she was mostly just looking at the pictures but now she's totally reading them on her own. She'll go to bed and read a few chapters before I tell her to put it down and go to sleep :) Such a great way to engage a new reader.

My 5-yr old is obsessed with comic books and he loves all of the Dogman books (I think he is a moderate to advanced reader). He reads and rereads them, takes them everywhere with him, and asks anyone around him if he can read it to them. There are some cringe phrases that I don’t like him learning at his age (ie: “that’s dumb”) but I try to teach him that it’s not nice to say those and figure he’ll probably hear it at school anyway. It’s a price I’m willing to pay for my son to love reading as much as he does now. In addition to reading, he LOVES the how-to-draw section at the end of the books. The instructions are simple enough for him to follow along and draw them by himself. One minor complaint I have with this book in particular is that I’ve noticed that he’s been getting paper cuts from the pages- he’s gotten 3 since he’s gotten the book. It could be a fluke but we never had this issue with the other books so it could just be his excitement in turning the pages (?).

These books took my reluctant reader who only wanted parents to read to him and made him into a fully addicted flashlight-under-the-covers-at-10pm reading addict. They are completely ridiculous, and very annoying to read aloud to your child, as they will demand you use different voices for each character. They are written exactly for 6 year olds, with just enough slightly inappropriate words like "butt" or "stoopid" to keep them giggling all the time. My younger child says she can't wait to learn to read so she can read Dog Man on her own. We have pre-ordered every sequel. Dav Pilkey is a hero in our household.

Great books! The kids absolutely love these. Humorous and good story line to keep the kids reading. So glad I came across these books. My kid doesnt want to put them down. He even packs them in his backpack to read at school and in the car. I recommend buying the set guaranteed your kids will love them.

I am so thankful for these books. I know a lot of us have kids that do not like to read, or it takes a lot of push to get them to read. When school started, my son would get into the car after school and have Dog Man books in his hand and would be reading them, eventually I asked "what is Dog Man!?", he explained thoroughly to me. He had eventually read all 6 books. He said that #7 was coming out, so I decided to order it on here, got it for him and he read it in a day. These books are great, awesome illustrations, and keeps my 9 year old reading. I am thankful for these books, they are hilarious!!!

Oh wow. This was another GREAT book. I laughed so hard. I had tears in my eyes. This book was AWESOME. I can't always read this book without laughing. You know when your tummy hurts when you laugh so hard, right?? Well.. that happened to me SO much!! Well, but something I noticed is that there was a short poem in notes, right? Well it said this: Two men looked out from prison bars. One saw mud, other saw stars. Well I might be a little wrong, but that is what I remember. Now I think I'll ALWAYS remember that poem. That poem was wonderful. I kept reading it again and again, because it was so good. Great book, and great poem!!!!

These books took our reluctant reader from griping to voluntary reader! This latest book in the Dogman series is just as laugh-inducing and engaging as all the previous books in the series. While I don’t enjoy this format, I do enjoy walking by my son’s room seeing him engrossed in a book.

I particularly liked the final point that we should do good because it's the right thing to do and not because we want credit. Petey's relationship with his father did a great job of showing that sometimes cutting out toxic family members is the right and healthy thing to do, and it's okay to not want to reconnect with someone who treated you poorly, even if that person is family. Also, Dog Man is an important series that has far more literary merit than people give it credit for!

Our night time stories is one of my favorite parts of every night. My children look forward to it and I have read to them almost nightly since they were toddlers. But this entire series is absolutely wonderful. If you really get into being animated while reading, you and your kids will have fun reading these. They always beg for an extra chapter. I do recommend starting at the beginning of the series but they do a nice recap at the beginning of each book so it’s not necessary. They were so excited when they saw there was a new book out for this series. I hope they continue releasing them because they are by far out favorite and we have read many many books! 6 thumbs up! (Mine and my children 😉)

I bought this book for my 6 year old son as a surprise because he loves Dog Man books. It was one of the best surprises ever! He was so excited and grinned from ear to ear. Once he started he couldn’t put it down. I would highly recommend this book to others. I’m looking forward to the next Dog Man book in December. He will freak out! Best purchase!!

The eighth book in the series I believe. The ninth one just came out December 10th I believe. This book was a great price, my son literally read it in one setting as it is a graphic novel. The dogman books are always fun. I recommend these books mainly because it gets your kid reading. Kids seem to really enjoy these books. I hope the author continues to make more.

I get the Dog Man books for my son. He loves them. This is the first book that I have bought him on the Kindle but I will be buying way more he likes to read more on the Kindle than the actual book. It's also cheaper that way to. So that's a win win for me because all 5 of my kids love to read and we have hundreds of books. The 2 oldest are getting to where they don't want to read as much so if buying a ton of books on the Kindle is better for them and costs less for me then that's great. Thanks Amazon for having the books my kids want.

My kid needs another Dog Man book like he needs a hole in the head, but hey, whatever floats his boat! As long as he's reading, I can't complain. He and his friends have been reading these since Kindergarten and they're in 2nd grade now, so the Elementary appeal is pretty solid (even for his more reluctantly reading friends). Another successful Dogman saga! Dogman taught my stubborn kid to read. I still catch him reading late and drawing pictures of the characters in the books. He loves this as much as the first one.

My 7 year old plowed through this book in 2 days. He loves this series and has gone back to read these over and over again. It definitely has some parts that I'm not thrilled with, but nothing awful enough that would make me not allow him to read it.

My 6 year old first grader cannot get enough of Dogman...he reads these books all day long-in the car, in the grocery store, at the dinner table, everywhere! He has ADHD and it can be very difficult to keep him occupied and focused on something for longer than 5 mins but these books keep him laughing, content and off of screens which makes me a happy mom :)

My kids love this book series. However, the particular book we received smells horrible to the point that it makes me nauseous! It's as if someone doused every single page in a hospital-grade cleaning solution. In a matter of minutes the smell permeated the air supply in our whole house! Perhaps it's just a covid-19 thing. Maybe it's typical. Either way... it's gross. For better luck, try a different seller.

My 8 year old and 10 year old LOVE the Dog Man series! They’ve both read every book in the series, so anytime a new book is released, I grab it. My 10 year old son is a reluctant reader. I have a terrible time finding anything that he’ll read voluntarily, but when I bring in a new Dog Man book, he devours it in an hour or so!

My nine year old son LOVES these books. We struggled trying to get him to read, but he didn’t like anything. As soon as he got these books he couldn’t put them down. I have been buying all the Dog Man books for my granddaughter, she is seven and has been reading them since the first one. She loves this series and ends up reading them all, several times. I have also purchased them for my middle school library and they are still very popular with the older kids.

I read this book with my 7 yr old son to learn more about the type of books he's reading. This story is funny and has good morals. Im glad my son really loves reading and including this book to his Dog Man Collection.

As far as comics go, this one is pretty typical for the humor kids are into right now. Which is probably why we didn’t dig it. Lots of potty stuff. Funny at parts, but the bad grammar was a bit to overcome for me too. Kids think it’s hilarious, parents will think some of us funny but it’s mostly just dumb.

I really like how Dave Pilkey tries to blend classic literature themes into his books. My son really likes the ease of the reading style and also the tongue-in-cheek humor of "George and Harold" (kind of reminds me of Harold and Kumar movie titles).

These are very enjoyable for little boys. I wished there were more words so they could get more storyline and work on reading at the same time but it’s dialogue and that would be difficult to do. Still good reading.

My 7 now 8 year old loves these books! He reads them cover to cover all the time. The "Flip o Ramas" are enjoyed by my boys as they take turns doing it. Still a little hard for my 6 year old to read (just started 1st grade August 19) but he enjoys looking at them and having his brother read to him. Highly Suggest!
