Perfect guide for kids!!

SUCH a great book!!! We got binoculars for our 10 year old, and wanted to get her a guide as well. I love that this one is small enough to fit in her fanny pack, and that each bird has a full page, full color photo (some have photos of male/female, or what the bird looks like in flight), and on the opposite page there is info about the bird. It’s is also categorized by color, which makes it easy for my daughter to find birds quickly. We have loved it so much that I’m looking into buying a CA guide for our trip we are taking to the LA area next month!

Great for beginning birders

I love this series of books. This is the second one I've purchased (bought one previously for another state where I was living at the time). They're great for beginning birders because they're color coded and use actual photographs, so it's easy to find and recognize your bird. Most other bird guides are organized by species, so you have to already know what kind of bird you're looking at in order to figure out what kind of bird you're looking at - how does that make sense? It also narrows down the choices to the birds you're most likely to see. Now that I know more about birds, I have started using other books and online resources, but I still keep this book around because it's small and light enough you can take it with you on walks and hikes. One small issue with the Washington version of this guide is if you're in the Puget Sound area, the range map is very small and squiggly there, so it's difficult to see your specific area, but it usually doesn't make much of a difference.

I love to see what kind of birds are coming and ...

GREA BOOK! I have feeders in my front & back yards. I'm stuck in my house due to health issues and watch the birds from my windows. I love to see what kind of birds are coming and like to find out what they are and details about them. This book is an easy size & weight to handle and/or carry around; the pictures of birds are WONDERFUL and love seeing details I can't always see on the real bird; the layout of the book is also really nice. The picture is on one page and directly opposite are the details, so very convenient to look back and forth - no annoying page turning back and forth. I highly recommend this book to 'backyard' bird watchers who want quick info about the birds coming to their feeders. "Stan's Notes" that are at the bottom of the info page are always short, to the point and give nice details about the song of the bird and a few of their habits. I also love the cover - the bright yellow cover makes it easy to spot when I'm looking for it!

Great book and clear colorful pictures.

Great book for a beginner like myself. Color divided so it's easy to flip to what you're looking at. I have come across 2 that I've been able to identify that are not in this book. This paired up with the cornell Merlin bird app is a killer combo for easier identification. This is a handy size and usually I can get it to stay in my pocket.

Great Bird Guide

I purchased this for my husband, and then bought another one for my son. It's so easy to use. The pages are color-coded by the bird's main body color making identification much easier than most guides. The pictures include both male and female, and there's small map on each page identifying where and when you're most likely to see the bird. The size is perfect for taking on trips.

This is a GREAT book!

A really wonderful book! Lots of pictures of male/female/color possibilities, all on the same page! Good maps showing where bird is found at different times of the year, and good descriptions of habitat and habits. Sturdy construction and heavy pages ensure it will last a long time under rough conditions! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in our local birds.

Pocket sized and colorful

I don't really know anything about what a good or bad bird book looks like, but here goes... Kudos for the pretty, detailed pictures. I have do have one specific complaint which is as follows: I live in the Olympic Peninsula beyond Port Angeles and have been interested in the plight (choose your word based on your personal stance) of the "old-growth" forests. A central figure in the relatively recent history (~50 years) of that subject is the "spotted owl." One of the primary reasons I bought this book was to be able to identify that species and expected that a book of this title would be about perfect. Please imagine my dismay when I discovered that it is not included. I can only ask, "Why not?"

Excellent in pocket and at home.

We love this book and use it at home frequently. As photographers we also take it with us on 'field trips' and in the car. This was a 3rd purchase of same book to gift. This time to a 10 years young birder we know. His Mom said he was so excited and poured over it all night and first thing the next day. We love to encourage reading and the love of birds. Win-Win!

The best bird book for amateurs in Oregon

We have owned a copy of this book for several years. Our copy sits next to the kitchen window for handy look-ups when a new bird hops by. It is tossed into the car anytime we are heading out. This copy was a gift to a 10 year old who loves it. The big plus for us is the way it is arranged--by the colors of birds. Anyone can recognize "yellow birds" and go directly to that section. We considered another book--one on just Willamette Valley birds--but it was organized by bird types. Amateurs, especially young amateurs, may not know "hawks" as they begin looking at birds. With Birds of Oregon, learning the types of birds will happen with time and use, but that is not a prerequisite to finding and identifying that bird you see NOW! great book. small enough to carry with you and easy enough to actually use!

Missing birds that are in WA

While all the birds in this book may (presumably) be found in Washington, not all the birds found in Washington are in this book. The peregrine falcon is one example of a bird that lives in Washington that is missing from this book. Once we discovered this ommission, we wondered what other birds are missing. This has taken all the fun out of using this book to try and identify new birds we see.

Great little book

This plus is exactly what I was hoping for. I love that the birds are sorted by color and have real pictures. Other books I have seen drawings and it's just not as accurate as a real picture. being able to look it up by the color of the bird, when you don't know what the bird is, is extremely helpful

So disappointed!

I don’t know what’s up, but I found a dead bird in my backyard that I cannot identify. I’m not really near the border with another state, and I can’t find it online, so I’m at a loss. Other than that, the book has been excellent.

Great book very good pictures

I bought this for my girlfriend she loves birdwatching on our property she has a bunch of bird books of Washington but she likes this one the most because the pictures are so clear and it gives very descriptive information about each bird

Gift for my 7yo

Really great book my son carries it everywhere. We bought it last year as a gift. He loves to tell me what bird is doing what in the back yard. Even if it is male or female. We take it camping and on road trips. It is a lot of fun for our family. My 3yo now will tell me what bird is in our neighbors yard. I put 4/5 stars for some reason it doesn't show the bird my family always called a blue jay...we see them often in our yard and I did as a kid growing up, but there is nothing like it in the book so how that can be I don't know. Kind of frustrating! Very easy to use!!! Set up by color, very nice photos to identify, nice maps showing areas that they live, and what season they live there if they migrate. Super cool. : )

The most prominent birds.

This is by no means a complete guide to ALL the birds in Oregon, but if you want to see which ones you are MOST LIKELY to see, then this is the book for you. I have other guides, but by the time I get done going through all of the descriptions and maps to see if MAYBE this is the bird I am looking at, the bird is gone. This book, arranged by bird color, is great for that first try at identification. The photos of the birds are amazing. Since the author is a wildlife photographer, he picked the photos that make it much easier to identify the birds. I have an Audubon guide as well, but the photos in it pale in comparison. A really nice bonus is the addition of both males and females photos on the same page, even if they are differing in color. For example, I was always familiar with the American Kestrel MALE, but not so much the female. After seeing his photos, I realized that I had been trying to identify a female Kestrel as a completely different bird. His descriptions of the birds are more than adequate. The maps even go as far as showing county lines so you can really see where he is talking about. And Stan's Notes on the birds give more information than even Audubon! An example of this is the House Finch. No other guide book I have ever read makes mention of a fatal eye disease that causes the eyes to crust over. That explained a lot to me since I had seen this in the finches and just assumed it was a defect or old injury scar. If you are from Oregon and like to sip your morning coffee while watching the bird feeder (like I do), then this is definitely the book for you.

Nice reference guide.

I bought this to see what kind of birds are stopping by the bird feeders outside my living room window. Easy to identify most of the birds I see.

Now I can look up all the birds that hit my feeders. Before they were just pretty, funny birds now I can name them when I see them. Friends are impressed when I can tell them the names of each bird.

Looking up birds by color...what a great idea

This has taken my bird watching to the next level. Having moved to a different area, it is fun to identify birds I have not seen before.

Stan Tekiela is an excellent photographer. I much prefer the photograph of a bird, rather than a drawing. I have several of his books and bought both his Minnesota and Washington books for my daughters as well as for myself. I recommend them to friends who love birds as much as I do. I do everything I can to invite them to my house !

Good basic guide book

I LOVE this book. I like to watch birds from my patio all day and now I know what to call them!

Pleased

We feed 'em and enjoy watching 'em. Now - we can ID 'em. Hand & easy to use.

Now I'm a Birdbrain

The photos and descriptions of each bird are so clear and accurate that I'm able to sit on my deck near my bird feeders and figure out exactly which birds are coming to my yard. It's also informative when hiking in the mountains or at the beach; I'm actually able to tell friends the names of almost every bird we see. The color-coded sectioning makes for quick referencing which is helpful since the birds never seemed to hang around long enough for me to page through my previous bird book which was arranged alphabetically!

Beautifully Illustrated Bird Discovery

Lovely vast information of every feathered creature of Oregon! Daily discovery of any bird 🐦 that lands in our garden. Learning about new visitors every day!

Great bird book for beginners

I really like this book. The pictures are vibrant and the description are very understandable. I also like the size of the book. I would recommend this to others.

Great little book for new birders

Nice field guide for the more common species. Good photos showing both males and females. Organization by color is nice for newbie birders except there are so many variations in the real world. I'd like to see a few more species for the Willamette Valley since we rarely travel to higher elevations.

Alot of information

Got this for my Dad as a gift and it has a lot of good details. Small size makes it easy to take places.

Handy

Nicely organized. It's a great quick reference tool.

the best bird book

for carrying around this is the best. this is the third one i have owned. easily referenced too

Really functional bird guide

I love this book. It is set up to gradually teach avian recognition with a series of graphic identifiers that really work. After skimming the book for an hour, I was able to identify distinct birds groups while on the fly and after two hours of research, able to isolate specific breeds. Clever and concise, this is an excellent addition to anyone willing to learn about our fabulous bird populations.

Easy to use.

We sit and watch the birds every morning. We are pleased we got this beginners book. Now we need one with more information. Who knew watching birds would be so enjoyable?

Purchased as a gift for my sister who lives in Oregon. She keeps it handy and enjoys looking up the birds she sees on her 5-acre suburban home.

Great book!

It's perfect for quickly finding out what birds are I'm my yard at the feeders! Love using it!

In very happy I purchased this book

Just received this book today and I'm impressed. I didn't expect it to be this informative. The pictures are accurate and the information is detailed. I've already identified quite a few birds that I see on my morning runs and weekend hikes that I've seen many times, but had no idea what they were! In very happy I purchased this book.

the perfect bird book

We have a bunch of bird feeders outside our kitchen window and with this book we can identify the many visitors we get every day. The book has actual photos which makes identification simple.

which is son fantastically useful.

Bought this for my husband to identify all the birds we see at our house. It's sorted by color, which is son fantastically useful.

Not what I expected

I thought this book would be easy to use, but upon using it I found the color coding not as helpful as I anticipated,. I live on the Oregon Coast and we have many migratory birds which I can not find in this book. I know there are far more birds in Oregon than what is offered in this book. Even though I do use it, I am looking for an alternative.

as described

An Oregon must have

Not quite what I expected

Disappointed. The most common birds are nowhere to be found in this book. There is no cross check for anything other than color, so I am still unable to identify the crested birds that have found our fountain.

Easy to find that 'new bird' you just saw!!!

Great book!!! This is the BEST book to find out what type of bird you just saw, because the pages are color-coded based on the colors of the bird!

Great photos

Love the size

Good quality

Definitely one of my most favorite books to bring camping. Entertaining to flip through and recognize birds.

great book for a beginner

I was hesitant to purchase this book due to so many negative reviews, however it was for a gift...it's perfect for a beginner - the birds are noted in order of color so if you aren't sure which category a bird is in, they are easy to identify. The first day we identified several migrant birds that we had not been able to find in the other, larger books. we reside right on the idaho/washington border so bought both state books and i just ordered the oregon book last week. great photos and easy to find a bird. The only negative thing i can say is males and females are not together - obviously, due to their color, however they are excellently x-referenced. highly recommended.

Great beginner's book or quick reference

great little book for beginning birders or a quick by-color reference when my official field guide is unwieldly.

👍🏻

Perfect for our OR vacation!

Great compact guide

This compactly sized book is big on great pictures. We use it frequently at home and plan to buy 2 more to keep in vehicles. In most cases it small enough to keep in a glove compartment of your card or tucked somewhere else handy. The organization by color of bird is helpful except some birds are sort of gray/blue/brown/black and you're not sure what color to look in. Also some birds vary their color by season. Either way, it's the best I've found without carrying several books or a big 20 pounder. My only wish that that they showed both a flight pic and a ground pic.

Compact size

As described,

Best buy for your money!

Excellent guide. Arrange by dominent feather color, so easy to identify birds at the bird feeder! Great bargain.

Nice little book, does its job

I was soo addicted to my old Peterson guide, and I bought this for my Mom, who loves the format. After using it a few times, I like it better. Its a good little, usable field guide. Now we keep three bird books in a basket with two sets of glasses everytime we sit out in the yard. Mom grabs this one first, then I wrestle it away from her. Pity summers ending. wish I could buy a copy of his birds of Willamette valley on amazon.

Five Stars

will use this book in my coloring of birds.....please with purchase !!!!!

Perfect!

I use this at work as I work outdoors on the water so it does come in handy!

Easiest Color pictures referance of JUST out native Oregon Birds.

Thank You, Mr. Tekiela for your organization and direction in your Birds of Oregon. As a new Bird watcher/feeder I have gained so much from your pocket size book and have it at my fingertips as I watch my feeders collect a following. The beauty of your book was a clear and hand size color picture, map of migration, quick glance size, bold letter common name, male and female differences, food preference and comparison with others of like colors. The personal notes were very helpful as well! Thank You, Cindy Sagar, North Plains Oregon.

We love this book

We love this book. Years ago, when we moved to Oregon, we purchased this book. It is accurate as to the birds that we see daily without all the birds you might see everywhere else. We've purchased over 5 copies of this book to give to our friends as gifts - they all love them!

My daughter and I like to thumb through this book and try to identify our local birds. We are not avid bird watchers but this is good enough for us and has clear colorful pics.

For rank beginners only.

This is a frustrating little guide for me. I'm constantly coming across birds that don't seem to be in this book. If you're a beginner and don't know many birds at all this might be a nice intro but you'll out grow it in a week or two and if you already know most of the common birds in your area this little guide will drive you crazy. I don't care how portable it is.

Great photos, great info, great coverage

This is the best field guide I've ever seen, for any state, region or country. Birds are grouped by color, making it easy for the novice birder. Includes large color photograph of every bird with separate pictures to differentiate females and juveniles. In addition to basic information, interesting behaviorial tidbits are included for each species. I could not be happier with this book.

Great book for me as a beginner in bird watching

This has been a great help as I just started getting into bird watching my yard. Adds to the experience, being able to identify birds.

Five Stars

Loved looking up the birds in our yard to see what they were.

Great information !

I bought this for a friend as well as one for myself. It is a very nice book. Great pictures of birds in Washington State and very informative. I would highly recommend it.

Good book with quality pictures for identification

Pretty good layout. I find it's a little challenging to find certain birds based on the color recognition. Overall, it is average to good.

Backroadexplorer

I love this book. You can look the birds up by their color. A colored picture of the bird is on the left-hand side, while the pertinent facts about the bird are on the right-hand page. In addition, it also shows which parts of the state this bird is found. It is a nice little field guide to carry with you when you go hiking or on a drive.

easy to use

gave as a Christmas gift to my Seattle buddies and they now can tell you what type of hummingbirds are wintering over in their garden.

Four Stars

Easy to use bird guide for any age of bird watcher.

Easy to read

Love everything about this book. Great pictures ,, easy reading for my bad eye's. Good information .

Five Stars

For my husband, he liked

Nice photos, but limited selection of birds.

This book is easy to use, and has very nice photos of birds. The selection is rather limited (130 species), and after only a few days of observing birds in my backyard here in the Portland area, I am seeing many birds that are not in this book. The quality of the book cover is not very durable. I am going to order a different guide, with a wider selection of birds, as this one is too limited.

Great book

I love how the birds are categorized. Easy to use!

Good Book for Oregon Birds!!!

I live in Central Oregon and have thoroughly been enjoying using this book to figure out what birds are coming to my backyard feeders. Rarely have I had to use the internet to figure out what type of bird is in my backyard. I am very happy that I purchased this book and recommend it to anyone living in Oregon who enjoys bird watching!

Great book-easy to use

Great little book easy to use to recognize the birds. There is a picture for each bird, and they are organized by colors. There are some interesting information for each bird. The book is small enough that it holds easily in a bag. It is not very useful to me anymore though since I installed iBird on my iphone, iBird has lots of criterion to recognize the birds in all North America, the ipod is smaller than a book, and you can hear the songs. But if you don't have an ipod, this is a great book.

Good book

Its a great basic bird book. Look for birds based on color makes it easy to use.

Love it!!!

I love this book. It is easy to navagate while viewing my back yard friends and has been great fun this summer. I highly recommend this little bird guide.

This is our favorite field guide so far for bird identification

This is our favorite field guide so far for bird identification. The color tabs on the edges of the pages make it very user friendly, even for my six year old.

Satisfied

Thank you. Book was received in very good condition. We needed help to identify the variety of birds at our feeders. Very satisfied.

The right choice

Excellent book to find what the names are. I really like how you select a category such as 'birds that are mostly black (brown, white, etc) to get to a section of birds to find what you are looking for. Really easy to find the names and learn about that bird

Five Stars

Perfect

Stan Tekiela state bird books are the greatest for those of us that are not experts

Stan Tekiela state bird books are the greatest for those of us that are not experts. I just enjoy identifying different birds in the woods and at the feeder and these books can't be beat. Photography is exceptional.

Love it!

My daughter and grandchildren love it. Great help in identifying birds at the feeder.

Great book!

Great book. Colorful.

Enjoyable

Beautiful picturs and information about the birds

Best pocket guide ever used.

The color guide to finding birds is awesome to use. These are the best state by state pocket guides I have ever used.

Great organization of birds

Easy to use and very good pictures

Great little book.

I owned the Connecticut guide and used it all the time while living there. Now I'm in Oregon and this one is just as good. It is small and very easy to reference. The pictures and facts provide just enough info to use as a true field guide.

Great bird book for Oregon

The description pages are very good. I like to know what birds are coming to my feeder and it is easy to find the birds by their colors. I also like the actual color photos of the birds rather than the drawings of birds that I've had in other books.

i have many bird guides and this is my go-to when i want to identify the bird quickly. then i might go to another guide for more info.

Five Stars

I love the fact that this book has large photos of the birds and not little drawing.

Wow these pocket guides are the Best.

The color guide to finding the bird your looking to identify makes this the best pocket guide I ever used.

Wonderful reference book

Five Stars

Five Stars

Tremendous help in identify the birds that flock to my yard

Great Bird Book

Beautiful photos and great descriptions. Very nice.

Great product

Love this stuff in my water!

Great Book for Washington Bird Watchers!

This is a fantastic book if you enjoy watching birds here in Washington state! It is divided up by color, so if you have no clue as to what type of bird you are watching, you can look it up by the color of the bird. It also has real photos of the birds, not just drawings.

A little more difficult to use

Good information but a little more difficult to use. Not a quick field guide. You really have to dig to find what you want.

Awesome

Love this book. Pictures are bright and beautiful.

good photos

This book is missing one of Oregon's precious active little birds. The titmouse, oak titmouse, is found in Southern Oregon. It was not in the book. Pity. Nice clean copy. Thank you.

Five Stars

a new bird showed up at my feeder. It only took about 3 minutes for me to identify it using this book as a reference

Easy to use and good information. Good clear pictures. A handy guide I keep on the kitchen table so if I see a new bird I can identify quickly.

Helpful book

I liked this so much, I bought this one for my son.

Oregon Birds

Wonderful guide to help me identify bird in Oregon. Moved here from the Midwest and it seems all birds are a bit different.

Backyard birding made easier!!

Excellent illustrations and a handy book for your novice bird watcher!

Wonderful, portable reference

I purchased this for my son and granddaughter and had it shipped directly to them in Washington. My granddaughter is 2.5 y/o and can look birds up herself because they are sorted by bird COLOR, then size. She now recognizes several birds when she sees them. Very high praise. Being a small volume it is easily taken along for walks.

Loved It

My 11 year old son bought this for my mother-in-law for Christmas. She loved it, and I was glad to hand her the book every time she asked me, "so, what bird is that outside?".

Just what I expected.

Good book

Bought as a gift for a close friend who kayaks and hikes and spends a great deal of time outdoors.

My friend said it was perfect, it fit into her pack so she could take it with her while kayaking and birding. I believe it to be very informative and the pictures are vivid and accurate. Nice little pocketbook.

Birds of Oregon Field Guide

My daughter and I found this paperback book set up for quickly identifying several varieties of birds using our bird feeder, including both male and feamale birds' pictures. We like and use the book quite often. Our experience was both prompt and the condition was as described (even better) as this was a used book offered by Goodwill at Amazon.com.

Great reference resource!

I already have one of these and got this one to share as a gift so someone else could enjoy it as well.

Hard to find species.

Very difficult to find the right birds. Not well put together. Common species not included. Grouped badly for a quick field find.
