Decent Kids Historical Fantasy about Pompeii

For young kids, maybe 5-8 years old, I think this is a decent introduction to the destruction of Pompeii using a fantasy series to do so. There are many historical realities that are not covered in the book -- sexism and general slavery for example -- but they didn't shy away from the fact that gladiators were not free and that the destruction was very real and the people likely quite scared. I originally got this book to review for a job then my responsibilities for that job changed but I still read it and wanted to share my thoughts on it with you all.

All of the Magic Tree House books are GREAT for students who are at reading level 2nd-3rd grade

All of the Magic Tree House books are GREAT for students who are at reading level 2nd-3rd grade. They are high interest, adventure stories. All of them revolve around 2 kids named Jack and Annie who go on some adventure, the students generally enjoy the books and retain what they read!

Great Story

My kid lives all these books, but this story especially. Maybe because we lived very close to Pompeii when she was little, but she loved the story.

Arrived damaged

This is supposed to be a brand new book. It came damaged. The top portion looks like it was jammed into something to remove the coloring and wrinkle the cover. The binding also shows damage. The lower back corner is curled up.

Great historic fiction for kids

I read a little to the kids each day - they were excited to hear the story and were disappointed each time I stopped.

What a great series for kids!

My son really enjoys reading this series. He has grown to love the two main characters. It's really easy for him to read and comprehend. We bought this series so that he can really get into reading books. Our plan has worked because there's not a day that goes by that he does not read one of these books on his Kindle. I only wish the books were a little longer but that's not a big deal since there are so many volumes. Great series!

Great chapter book starter!

My 2nd grader is reading this book this semester. So far we have enjoyed the story. I will be getting him the other books in the series soon. Great introduction into chapter books for kids to read.

This is an outstanding series for young readers. My son is 2 grades ahead in reading, so I just select the more advanced levels.

Stimulates the imagination!

My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)

my favorite Magic Tree House book

Though I love the whole series, this is my favorite Magic Tree House book. I read it to my grandchildren when they were little and now as adults, it's still vivid in their memories. We recently visited Pompeii together and while touring they both recalled this book.

My 10 year old loved it

We are going to visit Pompei in a month and I wanted my daughter to have a feel for the place. This book was fun and gave some flavor without actually scaring her. Also bought the companion non-fiction book "Magic Tree House Fact Tracker #14: Ancient Rome and Pompeii" - reading that next.

Highly recommended

Son loves this series

Like ancient Rome.

This time, Jack and Annie traveled to Pompeii of Rome. You know, this city was destroyed by eruption of volcano. They looked for a book in this city as Morgan asked them to find it. I could learn about life of Roman and words and praises. They finally found out a book in the villa. But the book was not the same book like paper book, it was made of papyrus.

Five Stars

as advertised

MTH books are well loved!

Be prepared to visit Pompeii with Jack and Annie! My children have all loved Magic Tree House books. For my early readers, 5, 6, 7 and 8 year olds... 1st grade advanced readers through 3rd grade. Magic Tree House books are excellent to introduce kids to the wonderful world of HISTORY! Yes, I know, some of us *cough cough* hated learning history as kids. But these books are action/adventure kind of books that get the kids interested in the things of the past without even knowing they are learning! For kids who want more, check out the "Research Guides" that go along with this series. They are basically Jack and Annie's guides of non-fiction information about the various locations and interests that they visit. My more analytical children love those almost better than the fiction books.

Great read

This completed my sons collection he was only missing this one. He loves these books and it arrived on time and was in wonderful condition.

Probably age 7 or up.

I bought this for my granddaughter. She is almost 6. After I got her her mother thought it was not appropriate for someone her age, She had read some of the others at school and they gave her nightmares.. I read this one at it seemed fine to me.

A good story, but not the bear

This was a fairly good story with Jack and Annie, but certainly not the best. I found this one to be a little too much on the scary side for my 4 year old. Nonetheless we are definitely looking forward to our next adventure, in China, with Jack and Annie.

Made my son read

My son learned to read when he was 4. However, I couldn't get him to actually read anything. He was terrified that reading independently would mean giving up the storytime with mommy routine (I think this fear was not alleviated by the fact that I had another baby around this time, and the fear of losing mommy to a very demanding baby brother got mixed up with the fear of giving up storytime). I knew that for him it was going to be important to find an exciting book, at just the right level, so that he wasn't bored with it but it also wasn't too hard. I had never read this series before, but it happened that my son was becoming interested in volcanoes, so I picked this up for him one day. I read it to him, and he loved it. Then he wanted to read another "Jack and Annie" story, so we bought another one, but this time I didn't read the whole thing. We took turns. Usually I would read one paragraph and then he would read one paragraph. He is almost 8 now, and I can hardly tear him away from books. He still reads Magic Tree House books, although they are very easy for him now, but I think he still enjoys the adventure and finds these comforting, plus he's really motivated to finish his Magic Tree House passport. He reads one of these books in one sitting now, squeezed in around the times when he's reading longer, more challenging books. But I have to give credit to this series. This is the book that made my son *want* to read, and that is simply invaluable.

My little boy's favorite of the series so far

My 3-year-old and I have read through "Magic Tree House" #16, and this one got the biggest reaction so far. After #16, we read the names of all the titles we had read so far, and then I asked him, "Which one of the books is your favorite?" and his response was "I love them all!" I noticed, though, that when we were reading the one about Pompeii, he was sitting upright, very engaged, scared for the characters throughout the last few chapters. It helped that we had read

Excellent read before a trip to Pompeii

As a travel writer of travel guides for children, I am always looking for books that will help a country and culture come alike. Pompeii is such a cool place to visit, but for a child, there is a lot about the ruins you need to 'see' with your imagination. Knowing what life was like then helps make such a visit magical. The Magic Tree House series is fantastic for young readers. They can be formulaic, but that is perfect for this age of reader. I read this book to my kids (one could have read it alone but not the other) when they were 5 and 7 before a trip to Pompeii. Laying down a foundation of what life was life a the time really helped them have a wonderful understanding of the place when we visited. As always - Magic Tree house books are worth reading and owning.

Magic Tree House is Magically Magnificent!

I discovered these books in my work as a teacher of reading to 2nd grade students. And students just love them! Let me start by saying this is an excellent series of books. The way that Mary Pope Osborne incorporates: science, social studies(history/geography) and many other important academic elements into her stories is phenomenal! The stories are exciting and well written. They have a way of drawing kids in and keeping them wanting to turn pages. In our guided reading groups we usually read a chapter or two per day and the students frequently beg me to read more! That is how much kids love these books! Isn't that refreshing? This particular installment in the Magic Tree House series finds Jack and Annie traveling back to ancient Rome! They happen to land in Pompeii in A.D. 79 on the day that Mount Vesuvius erupts! This book incorporates two very popular elements for young children: volcanos and magic. It is undeniable that young students are intrigued by the power of volacanos. They love to read about them and this particular book is a great way for them to start researching. Jack and Annie's adventures never fail to thrill readers and keep them interested. I highly recommend these books for students in early elementary school. They are excellent for students in 2nd grade. Enjoy!

Action filled, exciting story that teaches a little history

This interesting series has inspired many Second through Fourth Graders to read more. Teachers love these books because they show young people a view on historical events in a personal way. In this book, Jack and Annie are assigned a mission to the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D. on the day that the volcano, Vesuvius, erupted. They are to get a scroll (with a Latin name) about Hercules. They barely have enough time to find the scroll and make it back to the Magic Tree House before they become part of the tragedy. During their hours in Pompeii, they observe and learn about various parts of Roman life, including gladiators, open stall markets, bath houses, and papyrus scrolls. At the end of a book are several pages with nonfiction explanations and further information about the Romans. It is an exciting story, full of adventure, so young readers won't even realize they are learning ancient history between the lines of suspense. The narration is told in a simple, fast-paced way that packs a lot of action on each page.

all treehouse books are a great read w introduction to suspense and thrills / adventure in a language and method that's perfect for little brain. Also has subtle learning about cultures and other natural things while reading a story. Also these are much cheaper that some other preschool/KG books like pigeon books and so forth.

The Magic Tree House books are a MUST READ collection for all children. Unlike many other series for young readers, the Magic Tree House should be read in chronological order to best appreciate Jack and Annie's travels through time as they go on various missions; which are typically completed in four parts. Parents and educators will enjoy going along for the ride as much as their students! My daughter is a teenager now but she still gets excited when she sees a new tree house adventure has come out.

Select a few for Fun

Sometimes these books are described as aimed at middle-graders, but I'd go with those who see them more for Kindergarteners and up. I can see why they are so popular since the characters are solid, the stories are straightforward, there is a touch of excitement, and a pinch of magic. For what it's worth, I think these are the kinds of books where having a couple on the home library shelf is fine, but maybe you don't need all of them unless your child is a super fan. They do all follow more or less the same formula and are written in the same style. On the other hand, each one is a based on a different historical tidbit, which does aqdd variety and interest. Either way, good choices.

Jack and Annie Don't Like the Volcano

Review by Strat Bannister, age 5: Jack and Annie went in a magic tree house, and they found a story about Pompeii. They said, "I wish we could go there," and then they went to Pompeii! A soothsayer knew their future, so Jack and Annie went to a library in Pompeii, and they found scrolls. They took one scroll about myths, and then they went out to Pompeii. The earth was shaking, and they ran away. All of the other people were running away, too. Then Jack and Annie ran toward the volcano because they were going to save Pompeii. They realized it was too dangerous, and so they turned around and ran away again. The bridge they had entered on vanished. Then rocks fell into the river, and they got stuck in the lake. A very strong guy rescued them. Then they ran to the magic treehouse, and Jack could not see because of the volcano's ash. Then the treehouse spun around, and then they were home. And then, they went into the house, and they found their mom and dad. My favorite part was when the volcano started because it's so cool. I think you will like this book because it's so volcano-ish.

Volcanos wow!

My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for the last couple months and we love them. These are the first books that my son has taken a real interest into, checking them out and reading them on his own. Vacations under the Volcano is our favorite one so far. After checking out a bunch from the library we finally decided to buy a set, and he was so disappointed that this one wasn't part of the set that he bought it seperatly on his own. This book has sparked a whole new interest for him. I like that this story is based on a real historical event. As opposed to some of the others, like Sunset of the Sabertooth, which is one of my least favorites. As far as the danger goes, which another reviewer mentioned, I think Mary does a great job keeping the stories exciting. They would really become dull if the kids only strolled through meadows. For another scary one try Earthquakes in the Early Morning. On a side note, its good to read them in order, but we didn't and you definatly don't have too.

Too Many Saids

From V Osborne puts way too many saids. The only other words replacing "said" is "cried" or "replied". In my writing class, the teacher says ,"Thrice but never twice". Morgan Le Fay says remember 2 times in one sentence. Also, If Morgan wants a story, why doesn't she get it herself? She is putting kids' lives in danger. Why don't Jack and Annie tell their parents about what they are doing? Jack is mean saying that Annie is nuts. Jack says "Oh, man" too much. Saying "Save us story!" is plain silly. (Annie says that.) The plot is pretty good. I intend to mail Osborne a list of alternatives to said. From C Ms.Osborne puts too many saids. She makes Jack mean by having him say "she's nuts" and "oh brother". I think the way she has Annie saying"Save us story!" is odd.

Fantastic series

Tbh I bought this to prove a point (so I could show my husband the picture of the kids escaping with pillows belted to their heads) and I regret absolutely nothing. This series slaps just as hard as it did when I was 7.

SON LOVES MAGIC TREE HOUSE

My 9 yr old son loves the Magic Tree House series. I've purchased every book and have also pre-ordered books that will be released in Sept. When he's finished with each story, he gives my husband and I an oral book report. He has also learned various interesting historical facts concerning the book's theme. According to my son, there are clues throughout the stories and always a moral/lesson at the end of each story. The thing that I find funny is that he has learned that boys AND girls can actually be buddies and it's not creepy!

Historically accurate

We paired this with the Discovery Kids Magazine on Pompeii and found out that this book is a great way to find out about Pompeii and what happened, not just as a tourist attraction. It really puts kids in the moment of the time period. Every detail, down to the arrangement of the city was accurate. You can actually find a map replicating Pompeii and show your child where Jack and Annie went. Wow. Talk about subject integration! You know it is a great book when you can go down the list of Bloom's Taxonomy and use the book to create activities for every level. We are leaving today to buy every book in the series. Perfect for homeschooling.

Great book

My little one loves these books. Her teacher got us hooked. We just watched a show about Pompeii. This fit in well

Myles enjoys the fast story line with some history thrown in. Good read and very easy for him.to read on his own.

Good book

I like the book

Children need fantasy

The purpose of fantasy is to enable children (and adults) to experience what they never could in reality. Every child knows that no adult would send him to the vicinity of a rumbling volcano--which is exactly why they love stories in which things like that happen. Seeing make-believe heroes in danger and seeing them get out of it is one of the ways children learn to be brave and optimistic. If a 4-year-old loves these books, then he's getting something useful out of them. My 8-year-old loves them, and I will happily keep reading them to him as long as he wants!

MY BOY LOVES READING

My 1st grader hates to put them down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. When he was in kindergarten, the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not given her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Kid's Review

I love this book because it is an adventure book. I recommend this book to people that like to explore. The main character are Jack and Annie. They go on mission to be master librarians. When Jack gets the book in the library and then the volcano erupts. If you want to read this book, then get it. But watch out for the volcano.

Day of the Dragon king.

I love dragons! Maybe there's a super sword in the book. There's got to be 1 rock in the book.

Great for Kids Who Love Volcanoes

Jack and Annie travel to Pompeii on the day that Mt. Vesuvius erupts! A great story for kids who love volcanoes, history, and Greco-Roman myths.

another great book in the series

If your kids enjoy the Magic Treehouse series they will like this book. If they are not into this storyline then don't waste your time or money!
