For Older Kids
We love this series and my almost six year old has been glued to them since book 1. However, I think the content of book 21 is a little too heavy for a six year old. In the previous set, I found the book about the sinking Titanic and the following book with smoking peyote to be a little questionable, but these go even further. Book 21 has Jack and Annie talking to a wounded, ex-slave who states that he wouldn't have any family to return to, even if he did survive his injuries. I think kids need to learn the horrors of the past for sure, but to a kid who is just barely grasping the concept of death, war and slavery are too much. Perhaps an 8 or 9 year old can read about trench warfare, torn and bloody uniforms and a little boy on the field who looks just like Jack, but the age ranges in the description say ages 6-9. We bought the set and we'll read them someday, because they are good, but I wish I knew how serious the subject matter would be first.
A Must-Have for All Learning Children
My 7-year-old niece loves these. I took her to a Civil War reenactment and learned quickly that I had no idea how to explain war to a child. How do you explain these horrific things that human beings have done to a little girl who just doesn't understand? So after a little asking around, I heard about the Magic Tree House books. I feel confident that she's getting a good introduction to history and things every human being should learn about without crushing her innocence so much. Obviously it's great reading practice, as well.
Easy and engaging!
We love Magic Treehouse! They were the first books that my seven year old could really read on her own and really helped keep her interested in reading. She now reads at at least a 6th grade level (think, Harry Potter) but still will pick up and read these for fun. We homeschool and I got this set to go along with our American History unit that we're doing. My five year old and three year old also find them engaging enough to sit and listen to when I read aloud.
This was a good selection of the awesome Magic Tree House books
This was a good selection of the awesome Magic Tree House books. My 7 year old read one a day for four days until she finished them all. She loves the characters and the magical realism of this series. I would definitely recommend Magic Tree House books. Jack and Annie have all kinds of great adventures and missions. This series was specifically about times in American History which was great in giving my daughter information about American History on her level.
Great for a young audience that is looking for adventure!
My daughter reads these multiple times! Nice price and a great gift for a kid (mine is 8) who wants to go on an adventure! She has almost every book from this series and will read them constantly! She even re reads the books she loves them so much! Which is great because I liked them as a kid and now she can read what I once read! (only she reads them much faster than I did at her age). They area great price on here as well!
My son loves the Magic Tree House series and can't get enough of them!
My son loves the Magic Tree House series and can't get enough of them! He is 8 years old and buzzes through one of them in about 50 minutes, this is hard to keep up with, but worth it! I am having a hard time finding the series books for 29 and up in box sets, but I will keep looking! In the interim, he is reading Treasure Hunters by James Patterson...he loves these too and they are much larger books 480 pages vs 70!!!
Definitely recommend!
My 5 year old loves all of the Magic Tree House stories. We have Volumes 1-24, and he can't wait for the next set! The stories are short, simple yet so exciting. We love that it's mostly text. It really gives our son the opportunity to use his imagination and try to see the story in his head while we are reading.
Best children's series!
Magic Tree House books are so good for 2nd and 3rd graders. It is really amazing how well the author controls the use of appropriate reading level vocabulary and writes such interesting stories. All three of my children loved this series.
these would be fine.
These are the first of the MTH books that my son wasn't interested in. I think the content (war) was something he just didn't want to deal with at bedtime. He's six, so we'll try reading them together at other times, and see how that goes. I am sure for kids who are interested in history already, or are a bit older, these would be fine.

Have been reading this series with my granddaughter for years and now she is reading the higher number ones on her own. This is a great series for kids that teaches so many facts about the world, geography, and history.

My kids are totally in love with the MTH series and we're excited to start this new set. So far we have only read book 21 about the Civil War. My kids were enthralled and wanted to learn more about the war between the states.
Great book series!
My g-son loves these Mary Pope books. Since he is also home schooled, I thought the series on American History would work well. They were a gift but I know he'll love them.
Wonderful series
We started these when my grand child was quite young and now she's reading them on her own. She and I both love them. As a history teacher, I appreciate this first foray into our country and world's past. She's thrilled that some of these books are in her first grade classroom and that other children know about them, too. I agree with many other reviewers that these books have become so much better as the series continues. I'm glad we started at the beginning, but the latter stories are far superior to the first groups.
Great books!

I purchased these as part of a care package for my 7 year old nephew. He was so excited. He read the first one the day he opened the box. This series is one of his favorites. This length is great for this age group as it is not so long that it doesn't scare them off. Will be sending more.

Love Adventure stories? Don't Pass this one by! GREAT book series.
GREAT series for kids! My son is five, and loves for us to read to him. Right now, these books are the only books that hold his attention. The author has done a superb job with the characters Jack and sister Annie, who support each other in each of their adventures. Start at Book #1 and you will get the continuing saga of Jack and Annie's adventure. Your child not only will be swept away in the treehouse along with Jack and Annie, but they will come away learning a few things about the history in each book. I have had many conversations with my son, the morning after, talking about the book. Well worth the money spent. My son's teacher also highly recommends these books. We will be hanging on to them, for him to read by himself when he gets older. Each book contains 10 chapters, which make it easy to read aloud in a couple of nights during 30 minutes of story time.

Introduction to reading chapter books for my 5 year old
Bought for my 5 year old son as an introduction to reading chapter books. He loves the different adventures in each book. There are generally 10 chapters in each book with about 6 pages to read in each chapter. My son currently reads the first page of each, then I read the rest. There are black and white pictures on roughly every 2nd or 3rd double page. These book sets are the American (rather than the English) version of the books, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the two (just the odd English/American word and the fact that the American books are set in Frog Creek woods, Pennsylvania, compared to the English version which is set in Frog Valley woods). Buying the sets (which only come in the American version) can save you a lot of money compared to buying each book individually.
Great kids books that are sneakily educational
We started reading the magic tree house series after a trip to America where I think the books are more widely known. The stories follow Jack and Annie on their travels through time to various places in history in a magic tree house. The books are all 10 chapters in length and are all based around some form of historic event or time. For example, we've read about the pyramids, ancient Greece, Pompei and the wild west to name few. As much as the books are fun fictional stories, the subject matter is factual and educational without children seeing it as such. Each story book does have an accompanying fact book although I can't comment on these as we haven't bought them. They did run an English version of the books (which are American based) for the first few although eventually they went back to a common series. We're on book 22 now and I believe there's more than 40. My 4 year old is too young to read them herself, although now she's learning to read at school she does read some of the words. They're probably better suited to 6+ as actual reading material. If like us though you're looking for a good bedtime series to get your teeth into then I can't recommend them enough.
Child-friendly lure into history & reading.
This review is second-hand, as it were, because I haven't read it myself. Passed on unopened to my French grand-daughter who totally adores this series & just can't get enough of them. The accompanying map got a 10-star rating from her. Draws children into history in an engaging way.

These books are awesome, have read the whole series up to book 25 with my 7 year old son, and I love the discussion they lead to about major events or places in history. We just bought the next 25 and can't wait to work through them with him. Highly recommend!
