Another Wonderful Book in Tracey West's Dragon Master Series ...

“Song of the Poison Dragon” is a story that will engage new readers and one that can be an enjoyable read-aloud for preschoolers and for kindergarteners. Tracey West has written another wonderful book involving magic dragons and diverse, multi-ethnic children who are learning to become Dragon Masters. A new Dragon Master is arriving in the Kingdom of Bracken. Eight-year old, Petra, “…from the southern lands …” has been chosen by the Dragon Stone for the unnamed four-headed hydra. Her know-it-all attitude makes an unfavorable impression on the four Dragon Masters already living at King Roland’s castle. The king’s desire to exhibit his dragons for his friend Queen Rose results in a near tragedy as Petra fails, when the dragon becomes agitated, to follow instructions and pat the hydra’s heads. After a compassionate, understanding Drake succumbs to the hydra’s poison mist, Petra must overcome her fears to save both Drake and King Roland. Perfect for the target group, “Song of the Poison Dragon” is not a difficult book to read. Chapters are short; the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated or difficult. Sentences are simple and convey their message with the story and the characters’ actions. Beginning readers will appreciate the less complex structure of the narrative. The subject matter of wizards and dragons will fascinate young readers who find many early reader books “boring”. The book has magic and action; the mythical creatures contained on its pages will engage children. Damien Jones’ black-and-white illustrations are featured on almost every page. Unlike the simplistic drawings in some other children’s books, these have depth, perspective, and dimension, making them visually interesting and very appealing. These illustrations bring the characters to life. I appreciate that Tracey West has decided to include illustrations throughout the “Song of the Poison Dragon” for children who may have advanced to having chapter books read aloud to them at bedtime, but who still want pictures to accompany the story. Through the Wizard Griffith’s teaching of the Dragon Masters, the books show the importance of following the instruction and guidance of those who have greater wisdom than those being mentored. They also provide some good lessons about cooperation and the importance of listening to and of understanding others. The books in the Dragon Masters series contain magic and action, and situations that engage and interest youngsters. I am thrilled Tracey West has continued the Dragon Masters books and am glad to see there is at least one more to be published. If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. It is not necessary to have read other books in the Dragon Masters series – but you will want to do so - to enjoy “Song of the Poison Dragon”. Tracey West provides enough background information in this book to allow you to enjoy it independent of the other four Dragon Masters books. Her books are fun to read, contain enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teach some valuable lessons without becoming didactic.

Good

Spoilers ahead: My 7 yo liked parts of his including Petra knowing all about dragons, but she hates the king getting poisoned and Petra blaming herself. She did not feel it was how the character would have acted based on how Petra was during the beginning of the book. Petra later became one of her favorite characters especially in later books. It was a good enough book to make my kiddo VERY PASSIONATE about her feelings but not one she rereads.

Good books, got a little bent

I bought a bunch of these books for my daughters birthday. I know she loves them because she’s gotten them from the library and has read them before. I give it 4 stars because I was disappointed that they came in an envelope instead of a box. Since these are paperbacks some of them did get slightly bent.

(Series) book reader

my daughter has been waiting on this book, she has read the entire series. She loved it! makes for a super fun summer reading series for young children, as a beginner chapter book for reading, or to be read to. (my daughter is 1st grade, going into 2nd)... excellent for boys or girls.

Can't put it down

I feel really silly as I stated reading these chapter books with and for my grandson. I find that after I have read to him, I want to keep reading. I want to know what's going to happen next.

You will want the WHOLE series!

My 5 year old LOVES this series!!! Oh and so do I! We have every book so far. Not only are they very well written and have an intriguing story line, there are small pictures on every page - making it a seamless transition to reading him chapter books. He's also any early reader and often able to follow along. He already has plans to reread the books when he is older and a more independent reader as well. I especially love how key strong characters are both boys and girls. Making the series relatable to all genders. There are no weapons or scary plot themes, but rather excitement with magic and dragon powers! The stories are creative, clever, and quite a page turner for us both! Only wish the next book would come out sooner!

A great book for new chapter book readers

My daughter is a new chapter book reader, and this book series was perfect to get her started in that direction. The stories were interesting and fun, but not too long to be intimidating. She looks forward to each new book coming out. I've noticed some other "new reader" books like animal ark and Rainbow fairies are a pretty boring read and don't keep my daughter's interest for long, so this was a welcome change.

7-year old boy approved

Even though the new dragon master was *gasp* a girl, my son decided to give it a read and loved it - more good stuff from the Dragon Masters series!

He told me the book was the best serious he ever read

My son is 6 years old and he can ready by himself. He loves this serious very much. He finished 4 books (#5-#8) in one night. I rarely saw him read a chapter book so urgent. He kept asking me to wait until finished a book before he was willing to do other things. When he finished #8, he asked me to buy #9 and rest. He told me the book was the best serious he ever read.

Great series!

My sons, ages 6 and 4, LOVE this series. Highly recommend for young readers getting into chapter books.

It was so good because there was some bad news and some good news. ...and the bad news because good news. The new dragon master was cool.

Eight year boy with advanced reading level loves this series

My eight year old son is reading on a 10-grade level, but really loves this series anyway.

My Son Loves This Series!

My 7 year old son & I LOVE this series!! He reads independently, but we like to read this together before bed. The stories are suspenseful and captivating. My son is not particularly into dragons, so I wasn't sure if he would enjoy the first one, but he's hooked! We've read 1-7 and awaiting #8 to be released in the Fall. :)

Amazing series, a must read!!

My 4 year old is obsessed with the Dragon Masters series. We read a few chapters from one of the books every day. It is perfect because she is getting a longer attention span but still needs a book with lots of pictures and short chapters. The climactic parts have drama and tension but aren't overly scary. The stories about different dragons and kids from different parts of the world capture her imagination like nothing I have ever seen. This is an incredible series that I also enjoy reading with her, and I hope Tracy West continues to write many many more!

Huge success

I bought the first two books for one of my just 7 year old twins and he was obsessed with reading them, to the point where he would not go to sleep at his regular bedtime. I then bought the rest of the series and he also devoured them. I have given it five stars because snything that engages young children to read is a winner in my book.

Great series!

My son LOVES this series of books. They are an easy read, he started reading them when he was 8. He's now almost 10, and his reading level is above these but I enjoy him having an easier fun book every once in a while. 2nd - 3rd grade reading level

Great Book!

My daughter loves this book and the whole series!!!

Great series

My son loves these books. Great books to read.

wonderful book.

this book lets kids use their imagination .not scary.

Too short

I would like to see this series increase in content as the series moves forward. My son has read each of the books and this last one he read in less than a few hours. As much as he enjoyed it, I'd like to get something that takes longer to read than a magazine.

Great series for any elementary school’

Great series - I like it so much I bought it for my classroom!

My 8 year old son loves this series! He is a reluctant reader and has wanted me to get more in this series!

I bought these books based on a recommendation by Brightly. I was struggling getting my son to read chapter books until he was introduced to these, he's 7. Once we read the first one together he read the others mostly by himself and couldn't wait for the next one in the series to be released. The stories are wonderful and easy for a 1st grader to follow. Highly recommend.

Book Review

{My thoughts} – There is much to be learned about the dragons while reading through this series. I really enjoy how each book picks up right where the had left off. In this book we get to meet the new Dragon Master. Her name is Petra and she gets the Hydra dragon that was used in the attack against the castle in the last book. Petra seems to have lots of knowledge about dragons which at first makes the Dragon Masters curious about her. After awhile though she starts to come off as a know it all. At that point most of the Dragon Masters don’t want to listen to her and start to feel like she isn’t interested in being there. It isn’t long before Drake figures out that she is nervous and scared of the Hydra. Once he is able to help get past how she feels and help her to see how great the Hydra is, Petra starts to warm up to the Hydra and things start going according to plan. When the book ends the Dragon Masters have a visitor that brings with him some bad news. This bad news is news that Griffith had already been questioning. I am interested in seeing what is to come of the story in the next book.

Great book great series

This series really has staying power. With my two youngest children there are few chapter books that we have read more than once, let alone whole series. This is the first series I recall we have read through twice and are eagerly awaiting the next instalment. The Dragon Masters is a great series that children and those who read to them will both enjoy. One of the nice things about this series is that it is a true series. Each story builds upon the next. Now yes that are strong enough to be read on their own, but as a whole we get to watch the growth of the group as they come together as a team and learn to work together and support each other. In this latest offering the Dragon stone has chosen a new dragon master, Petra and her great uncle had also been a dragon master. She seems to know a lot about dragons and their abilities, but when it comes time for her to meet her Hydra and bond with it, something just seems off. Even though Petra seems like a know-it-all, she also seems afraid. She is far from home and knows that there are high expectations upon her. When King Roland plans on show casing the dragons especially the new Hydra and Petra to Queen Rose the day after Petra's arrival, things go bad quickly. Soon the King is poisoned and all the dragon masters are searching for a cure. Will they find something in their books, or will Petra and the Hydra make connecting in time to save the King? My children love the illustrations by Graham Howells, the often go back to look at previous illustrations or sneak ahead to get a glimpse of what is coming next. Add to the excellent drawings wonderful stories and it makes for some great reading time. These books are enjoyed by the whole family. The younger kids like having them read to them. My oldest enjoys listening or taking a turn reading to her siblings. And there is a great series of questions at the end of the book to help make sure children comprehend the story. Set at a grade 2 reading level in our house these are enjoyed from Kindergarten to grade 4. The kids love these books and therefore come with their seal of approval.

Another Great Book in a Great Series *5 STARS*

This is a great early chapter book series for young readers both boys and girls. This story is engaging. The chapters are well written and allow the readers to jump into the stories well. Each chapter leaves you wanting to know more which is essential when trying to motivate young readers to read. They really are hard to put down even for mommy. Purchased for my son who is in first grade and just getting started with chapter books. There are plenty of well illustrated pictures to break up the text and the chapter lengths are not overwhelming for early readers. Really a great series overall. The stories can stand alone but if you read in order will get a little more background. This series is well worth the investment. As a early childhood teacher myself, I cannot sing the praise of this series more.

Back to a good flow!

I was a little worried that this book would be less engaging as the forth book was, but I’m glad to say it got back to the original creativity I experienced in the first three. I absolutely love reading the voices of the characters to my daughter, and she wanted more and more after each chapter was finished. Ended up reading it in two sittings. We are both eagerly awaiting for the sixth book to be released!!

Love this series!

My son loves this series. I give him a book and he reads it from cover to cover right away. I wanted to find a series that he would enjoy reading and want more of, thankfully I have found it.

Our kids LOVE the Dragon Master's book series

We needed a good "first chapter" series with lots of pictures as for bedtime routine as picture books just became rather expensive. So I searched the internet and came across the recommendation for Scholastic's Dragon Masters book series. They LOVE all the characters/dragons in the books and love guessing what each person can do and what powers the dragons have. Whenever possible we use the Kindle edition and broadcast it to our TV via our Amazon Firebox (via wireless projection) so that everyone can see the text and the pictures. Unfortunately not all the books are available for Amazon Kindle, so some books we had to buy as hard paper and we are running out of space in our bookshelves as we have sooo many books, so we prefer electronic copies. Electronic copies also allow us to share it onto their Amazon Fire tablets for kids. Again, LOVED by all of our kids and we have different ages and grasp of the world. Unfortuantely we have read ALL the books available and now have to wait until March 2021 until the next book comes out.

Great

This series is really good. My children age 4,6 and 7 all enjoy it and look forward to each new book. This story introduced a new dragon master, Petra, to look after the four headed hydra dragon that had been introduced in book 4. The dragon topic keeps my kids excited and the stories are well written so I enjoy reading them with the kids too. It works well for independent reading (my 7 year old will happily read these all in one day) or as a read aloud bed time chapter book for my 4 year old. I hope they bring out lots more in the series as its great to have a series that gets the children so excited

My 6 & 7 year old boys loved them

Clear, larger text chapter books for early readers, with detailed colour illustrations. Suit average Year 2 child.

Great book great series.

Engaging for my 8 year old

My daughter loves these series and she's reading book 7 now. The only issue I have is that I really wish the stories were longer for the price we pay, because she finishes one book in a couple of hours on the day it arrives!
