Another Exciting Addition to Tracey West's "Dragon Master" Series ... Wonderful Way to Encourage Young Readers ...

When a lightening dragon hatches and escapes, creating havoc in the countryside, the Dragon Masters must find him and locate the newest Dragon Master. Tracey West’s latest book in the Dragon Masters series “Search for the Lightening Dragon” is a wonderful way to encourage young readers. Like the other Dragon Masters books, this one is fun to read, contains enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teaches some good lessons about cooperation, the importance of listening to and of understanding others. As the Dragon Masters and Griffith, their wizard mentor, discuss the missing lightening dragon, Diego – another wizard and a baby dragon expert – appears with news that the dragon has been located in the Land of Saxon. Drake, a young Dragon Master, and Worm, his earth dragon, accompany Diego to his large, oddly shaped cottage. There, they use Diego’s gazing ball to locate Carlos, the newly chosen Dragon Master, and to observe the chaos created by the young dragon’s activities. Meanwhile, Bob, a bird who assists Diego, flies off to find Carlos who lives with his grandmother. When Carlos calms the young dragon, Lalo, the story seems to end on a happy note. However, the sudden appearance of a Thunder Dragon and an adult Dragon Master set the stage for this fine series to continue. Short chapters and a varied, but manageable vocabulary for young readers, make “Search for the Lightening Dragon” an easy to read book. Short, simple sentences and the less complex structure of the narrative give young readers a sense of accomplishment while reading the story. The subject matter of wizards and dragons fascinate my grandson who thinks some early reader books “for babies”. Since discovering the Dragon Masters, he has become an enthusiastic reader, wanting to read and learn more about those mythical creatures. Because the books in the Dragon Masters series contain magic and action, and situations that engage and interest him, he has started to explore the library for more difficult reading material. Both my grandson and I are thrilled to learn that the Dragon Masters series will continue. “Search for the Lightening Dragon” features Damien Jones’ black-and-white illustrations on almost every page. Unlike the simplistic drawings in some other children’s books, these have depth, perspective, and dimension. The illustrations are visually interesting and very appealing; they bring the characters to life. Children, who may have advanced to having chapter books read aloud to them at bedtime but who still want pictures to accompany the story, find this feature of the Dragon Masters very appealing. As a grandparent who loves to read and wants to encourage a love of reading in my grandchildren, I appreciate that Tracey West has decided to include illustrations throughout the book. If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. It is not necessary to have read the other Dragon Masters books to enjoy “Search for the Lightening Dragon”. Tracey West provides enough background information in this seventh book of the series to so readers will enjoy it, even without reading the others. However, if your young reader or listener is anything like my grandson, they will want to collect all the books of the series! The story will engage new readers and can be an enjoyable read-aloud for preschoolers and for kindergarteners. Tracey West has written a book involving magic dragons and diverse, multi-ethnic children who are learning to become Dragon Masters. The children demonstrate their concern for each other and for their families through their attitudes and actions. I have already pre-ordered the eighth book of Tracey West’s Dragon Masters series. Her books are a wonderful way to encourage young readers. They are fun to read, contain enough fantasy and magic to appeal to children, and teach some good life lessons about cooperation, the importance of listening to and of understanding others.

Perfect for Early Readers

The Dragon Masters Series by Tracey West is part of Scholastics early chapter books series called Branches. These books have great stories with quick-moving plots and pictures on every page. As a result, they are perfect for beginning readers or children who may become intimidated by a lot of words on a page. The Dragon Masters series is aimed at children in first through third grade. While the words are leveled, the stories do not suffer as a result. Even my older son asks to borrow the books so he can keep up with the plot. I admit that while I buy the books for my kids, I steal them to read myself. This is a series of books about a group of children who make a magical connection to dragons through a dragon stone. Each book introduces a new dragon and a new story to go along with it. The newest book, entitled Search for the Lightning Dragon follows the friends as they search for Carlos. He is the master of the lightning dragon, a baby dragon who is on the loose and fast. Will they be able to find Carlos so he can make a connection with the little dragon? We loved this book, as we did the previous books in the series. Book eight in the Dragon Masters series, Roar of the Thunder Dragon, is going to be released on September the 12th. We have already pre-ordered it because we can't wait to see what happens. The first book, Rise of the Earth Dragon, introduces us to the main Characters in the book: Drake, Ana, Rori and Bo. I really like that the masters are boys and girls because it makes the story relatable to all children. The second book, Saving the Sun Dragon, is my favorite in the series. The next books are Secret of the Water Dragon, Power of the Fire Dragon, Song of the Poison Dragon and finally Flight of the Moon Dragon. What's your favorite early reader book or series?

LOVE LOVE LOVE

So I had books 9, 10, and 11 that I must have gotten at a book fair for a good price. I decided to give these books a try as a read aloud with my students in 1st grade and WOOOOWWW!! They LOVE them and so do I! The books are so fun, creative, and adventurous for both boys and girls!! I have to say that I too am extremely excited to read these books. As I have now read all three of those books with my students, I decided I HAD to HAVE the WHOLE series!!!!! So I have bought the whole series and am waiting for all of the books to be delivered. I even pre-purchased the two new books in the series. I can see these being the new Magic Tree House book series that kids LOVE and ADORE! SERIOUSLYYY!!! What I love best is that these are part of the Scholastic Branches books - so these are early chapter books that make reading fun and interesting for 1st-3rd graders! You won't regret getting these books!!

Great series

Great series

Ends with a Cliffhanger

My daughter loves this series and has read every one of these at least five times. Similar to the other book, the children discover a new dragon and a new dragon master. However, unlike the other books, this one ends on a bit of a cliff hanger. Spoiler Alert: The baby dragon gets kidnapped. The end the novel the characters resolve to find the dragon. However, with a sequel not coming out until September, your little Dragon Master may be a bit stressed and upset about the fate of the newest dragon. Had I known about the cliff hanger, I might have delayed her reading this, as she's worried quite a bit about the fate of the characters. So, I thought I'd post in case anyone else out there has a young, sensitive-hearted reader that may also end up awake all night with worry. That said, these books are great. Perfect chapter books for early readers. I'm sure we'll get the next one and the baby dragon will be found and life will be wonderful again :).

Great book series to spark imagination

Love this book series especially the questions at the back of the book along with the drawing challenge. My son is making up his own dragon with special powers and his own story to go with it. I would say this is good for a 1st to 2nd grader depending on their reading level. There are some unusual dragon names that they might need help at first. My son is a 2nd grader and he is finishing one a night, but he said he would reread them. For any kid who has to finish something then this is a great chapter book.

7 year old is obsessed with this series

My son was a reluctant reader for all of 1st grade. In 2nd grade I ordered the Dragon Master's guide for him to look at and read about all the different dragons in it etc. Fast forward and we own every book in the series. He loves all of these and rereads them often. They are his absolute favorite and now we can't even get him to put a book down at dinner!

Grandson loves these

My grandson loves these. Thank you. We now have a reader!

These little books helped him realize reading could be fun! For us

My son had a very hard time getting interested in reading. He was already a dragon nut so once I found these I had to give them a whirl. He loves them! This helped turn a page in his reading desire and ability! These little books helped him realize reading could be fun! For us, these were such a big help because he sees that reading can take him on adventures! For our very active, adventurous little boy, that's what worked. He started them in first grade and more have continued to come out during his second grade and he anxiously awaits every new one!

Good series

My son loves these books. I recommend you start in order but you can read individually. It's not a boring book for an adult while reading to your child who can not read at that level yet. I think these would be very good entertaining books for a child to read on their own as well

A favorite in this series

This one is really good! A little more adventurous than the others, but to fully appreciate the story, I recommend starting with the first book and read through them in order as the characters build. My 7 year old son & I LOVE this series!! He reads independently, but we like to read this together before bed. The stories are suspenseful and captivating. My son is not particularly into dragons, so I wasn't sure if he would enjoy the first one, but he's hooked! We've read 1-7 and awaiting #8 to be released in the Fall. :)

These books are FANTASTIC! My 5 year old daughter loves them and has every single one of them, they're clearly written for the kids to understand whats happening and they touch upon key details in every separate book so you don't really have to have read all of them to enjoy the stories! I live in Chicago but I was born in Wales and lived there for 28 years and so I try to encourage dragon interests as much a possible :) These books are PERFECT and they have awesome boy characters AND girl characters which I love.

Wonderful chapter book series for young readers!

My 6 year old son loves this entire series (my older son read these books first at about 6 years old as well and also loved them! This is the only book series where he could not wait to read the next book. The characters are interesting to him and the dragons are really neat (not scary). The book has pictures mixed in which really helps keep the interest of kids who haven't quite found the love of chapter books yet. I highly recommend this book and all the others in the series.

This book is great.

This book is really good. I enjoyed the new lightening dragon in the story. My 5 year old dictated this review.

My 8yr old loves this series

she says "it's really adventurous and I like how it involves dragons (which are my favorite animal), and each dragon has it's own master. And I've been noticing that Drake has been on the front of every book."

Perfect, appealing series.

This entire series is fantastic! It's rare to find books that appeal to both my 5 year old daughter and my 10 year old son. The plots are quick moving, the characters and conflicts are just shy of predictable; really perfect for young readers. We read them aloud and it's been great for everyone! This latest entry was the best so far. My daughter really connected with the baby lightening dragon. She loved the artwork and all of its expressions. She's been playing baby lightening dragon for days now.

He told me the book was the best serious he ever read

My son is 6 years old and he can ready by himself. He loves this serious very much. He finished 4 books (#5-#8) in one night. I rarely saw him read a chapter book so urgent. He kept asking me to wait until finished a book before he was willing to do other things. When he finished #8, he asked me to buy #9 and rest. He told me the book was the best serious he ever read.

7 year old loves these books!

My 7 year old son LOVES dragon master books! We get excited to get ready for bed so we can read them! Wish we could of bought them in a big set instead of individually!

Great Book!

My daughter loves this book and the whole series!!!

Another great book in a fun series!

Another fun book to add to the Dragon Masters series! My son loves this series. He's 9, and is a pretty advanced reader but still enjoys the content of these books. They're reading level is maybe 6-8ish? When he got numbers 5-7, he started at book one again, he loves them that much! We will be buying book 8 as soon as it comes out!

My 7 year old boy just love this collection.

My 7 year old boy just love this collection.

My 3rd graders absolute favorite series

My 8 year old, who doesn't like to read, just read this in a day. He loves this series so much! I wish they would crank them out faster. I have yet to find another book that he will read without a fight. He has to read 20 minutes a day for homework and he watches the clock like a hawk when reading anything else.

Fantastic series!!!!

Even my most reluctant readers find joy and success with this very motivating series!!! It makes my heart sooooo happy.

Great book. SPOILER in review!

Purchased the Kindle version. Read it to my 8 yr old and he loved it! He can't wait for the next book in the series to be released (Sep). The one drawback with this one is that the ending was a total cliff-hanger. 8 year olds don't do well with cliff-hangers!

Awesome book for 8 year old!!

We had a very hard time getting my son to read voluntarily. He reads these books for hours on end, one after another and absolutely loves them! We just need to find another similar series bc he is almost to the last book!!

Good book

Book was as described. My son (8 years old) loves this book series.

My older reader still requests I buy any new Dragon Masters books

This is the series that started my daughter on the path to being a reader! Even now, as an older reader (currently reading Harry Potter), she requests that I purchase any new Dragon Masters books so she can continue the story. :) I think that speaks for itself!

Great for new readers

My 7 year old had gotten behind in reading skills. These books got him interested in reading again. They are entertaining, and were just challenging enough. All the good moral lessons, too, of course. Illustrations are great and everything converted perfectly to the Kindle app.

Love Dragon Masters

This series has my son and I hooked. We just love it. The whole line of BRANCHES books are just perfect for the 2-3-4 grade readers!!!

Fun adventures

My six year old loves this series and I enjoy reading it with him.

These are the best!

I am reading these with my four year old son and we LOVE them. The stories are interesting with each having a varied plot. The characters are likable. And then of course, there are the dragons!! So neat!

Too short

I am rating it four stars because my 9 year old son loves the Dragon Master series. He's read all previous books, and was eagerly awaiting this story. When it arrived, he finished it in two days. I wish these books were longer, because it takes several months for each book to be released and the amount of wait is disappointing considering how short each book is.

Good for young readers.

Great stories for the beginner readers. Great for ages 6 to 9. My 8 year old can't wait for the 2 new books coming out in 2018.

Picture on every page

My son and daughter love this series. With pictures on evey page it is easy to engage both young and old kids.

Not Hooked

It wasn't the quality of literature I would like to use for small groups in reading. It's not terrible, just very predictable with little intensity that beginning chaper book readers need. They need to be hooked to maintain an interest in the book and draw them to read more by the same author. It lacks imagination.

Book Review

{My thoughts} – At the end of the last book we’d learned why the Primary Dragon Stone was in trouble. It was using all of it’s energy to hatch a baby Lightning Dragon. The group of Dragon Masters now need to track done the new baby dragon. They have been looking for it for a few days and haven’t had any luck. Then all of the sudden Griffith’s friend Diego shows up and has a lead on it. While they are talking about where the baby dragon is the Dragon Stone that Griffith has chooses it’s new Dragon Master for the baby Lightning Dragon. The group separates at this point. Some go after the baby Lightning Dragon, some stay with Griffith to study more about the baby Lightning Dragon and then Drake and Worm go with Diego to find the new Dragon Master. A lot happens in this book. Towards the end we get introduced to the newest villain in the series. I have to admit I am curious where this is going. I look forward to reading more in the next book.

They are great for bridging the gap between the more advanced learning ...

My eight year old was never very interested in reading until we found this series. Now he devours these books the day they arrive. They are great for bridging the gap between the more advanced learning to read books and chapter books. There are enjoyable pictures on nearly every page that help the child understand and imagine the story. Also great for increasing reading skills.
