Okay But Don't Let It Be Your Only Bible
I'm a pastor and was interested in getting this Bible when it became available to me for review. I have mixed feelings about it and would recommend it only as a supplemental resource but not a person's primary study Bible. As for the NKJV translation, I find it very readable and accurate. I am generally of the opinion that the best translation is whichever one a person will read, within reason - i.e., avoid sect translations such as those from the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, avoid odd translations such as the anti-alcohol "Purified Translation", and stick with translations that are widely used by Bible-believing Christians churches. This one is a fine choice. This Bible has a lot of leadership resources peppered throughout its pages, but that's really my main beef with this Bible. Nearly every bit of the commentary contained is about leadership, leaving very little attention given to the general background and content of the text. You get, for example, 2/3 of page on introductory info on the Gospel of John. That's not much, and then all of the other commentary is about leadership. This singular focus presents the serious risks of ignoring super-important teachings of Scripture if they don't relate directly to leadership and/or importing leadership lessons into texts where they aren't really the focus. Maxwell's notes on the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11, for example, are interesting: "The Law of the Big Mo: The Tower of Babel - Momentum is a leader's best friend. Unity of vision, language, and effort among the people of Babel provided tremendous momentum. Unfortunately, they used the Big Mo to go their own direction. As a result, God halted their momentum by confusing their language and scattering them to the four winds." There is lot to question here: what does momentum have to do with the story? Where does God say momentum is a leader's best friend? Was the misuse of Big Mo really the problem? Did God act in order to halt their Big Mo or to do something more than that? Bottom line: I would only recommend this Bible as a supplemental resource about leadership but not as a general study bible. It simply ignores far too much important stuff that isn't about leadership. I would also only recommend it to mature students of Scripture who would readily recognize places where the commentary notes miss the real point in its pursuit of finding leadership in every passage. Not a terrible resource, but a limited one that won't replace a true study Bible.
WORTH IT!
I have had a copy of THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE since 2005,which is why I was very interested in reviewing the THIRD EDITION of the New King James Version of the Bible with notes by the famous author / speaker John C Maxwell. Two questions I am asking myself: Why would anyone purchase a John C Maxwell Bible? Is it necessary to get the newer edition if you have an older one? Superficially, the newer copy has a great book cover but the Bible itself is red with writing on the sleeve identifying it as THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE - John C Maxwell NKJV. The print is bolder much easier to read. The older version I have , copyright 2002, has 1,616 pages whereas the newer one has 1,629. But we are looking for the added value as is provided by John C Maxwell himself so let's now look at content. First I see an exert from the writings of Kevin A. Myers "What On Earth Is God Doing? Pretty much an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation - confirming that there is nothing happening today that is a surprise to God. As I moved forward into the Bible itself, beginning with the beginning I noticed how information is presented is different but it is still the same information. Both Bibles present Mr. Maxwell's teachings on leadership laws, qualities. and issues as well as Profiles in leadership. But with the newer edition there is more! For years, perhaps decades, John C Maxwell has shared his knowledge of leadership from a biblical perspective through speeches, classes and book. Anyone who has ever read the Bible knows that every time you read it you learn something- THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE contains the somethings Mr. Maxwell has learned over the years some of which you will find in greater detail in his books. Why would anyone purchase THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE? Because Christians have to distinguish themselves from worldly leadership and the only way to do this is by studying God's words. By having leadership principles and their modern day applications pointed out being a God pleaser and not a man pleaser is that much easier. Is it necessary to get the newer edition if you have an older one? I would say YES, if you don't have all of John C Maxwell's leadership books. NO, if you have and have read all of John C Maxwell's leadership books. YES, if you are like me and like the idea of having reminders of various principles written in your Bible. Though this is a review copy and I often give away such Bibles- this one is a keeper for me! written by Marsha L F Randolph I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.
Extraordinary reference for leadership, for life
John Maxwell is a renowned expert on leadership in organizations. Here is the source of John's wisdom, the Bible, complete with annotations, indexes, and cross-references. Every book in the Bible, every chapter, and almost every page is loaded with explanations descriptions of principles, and practical applications. (Please see the enclosed pictures.) The King's James version is my favorite translation of the Bible, and this is the slightly updated New King James version. If you only buy one leadership book this year, this should be the one you buy!
Five-Stars for the NKJV, But Minor Changes and Additions Needed ...
If you want to study leadership qualities exhibited throughout the Bible, exerting leadership in a Christ-like manner, or if you have been frustrated as you seek to lead others to Christ, then you may find the “Maxwell Leadership Bible NKJV” valuable. This New King James Version Bible retains the elegance and rhythm of the original King James Bible, but updates the more arcane terms and pronouns to make reading easier. This version of the Bible has many unique features that emphasize its purpose. The introduction to each book briefly summarizes its content. A column on the right-hand side of the introduction talks about God’s role, the leaders and those of influence in the book and some lessons in leadership found in the book. Within each book of the Bible, a boxed section discusses “Leadership Highlights” within the book, giving citations in the text and the page location of the citation. Inserted within each book are gold-outlined boxes containing articles and discussing various leadership characteristics and citations to support the premise. Blue-outlined boxes provide “Profile[s] in Leadership” and highlight individuals found within the specific Bible book. Larger, page-long “21 Qualities” discuss an individual characteristic of leadership and a character who might exemplify that quality as well as the appropriate Biblical references. The “Maxwell Leadership Bible NKJV” concludes with three indexes: Leadership Laws, Leadership Qualities and Leadership Issues. A section titled “Profiles in Leadership” as well as six other topics within the purview of leadership concerns conclude “Maxwell Leadership Bible NKJV”. Printed on heavier paper than many study Bibles, “Maxwell Leadership Bible NKJV” allows you to annotate or highlight specific passages without having the ink bleed through to another page. The larger “comfort” text is clear and spaced so that reading it is not difficult. Verse numbers and footnotes are also larger font; they are less difficult to decipher than those found in other versions of the Bible. Christ’s spoken words are not printed in red ink; this would have been a positive feature that I find useful when studying Scripture. Bold and italicized titles at the start of a chapter indicate the theme or topic within a chapter. Formatted in a two column style, the “Maxwell Leadership Bible NKJV” is not difficult to read silently; however, I find the KJV and NKJV are easier to read aloud when the text is printed across the page rather than in columns. The “Maxwell Leadership Bible” contains neither a Concordance nor a Subject Index; both are critical for those who truly want to study Scripture. While the NKJV and larger print of “The Maxwell Leadership Bible” deserve five stars, I did not find this particular version as helpful as other Bibles and so rated it a four-star item.
Give this one a chance
I have known about this study bible for a long time now and always completely ignored it, thinking it was an attempt to use the bible to "get ahead", and this turned me off. However, I find that I was completely wrong all this time and must take all that back. Maxwell is known for his business leadership principles and applies many of his concepts to the biblical text, or rather, he wrote the principles based on the bible. I have been going through Luke during my daily devotions and I have been blown away by some of the wisdom the notes in this study bible has. Things that I had not thought of or gotten before. The notes are not copious like so many study bibles today, but are clear and conscise and help apply the passage to daily living, daily leadership. No, I am not a business leader, but I am a leader when it comes to reaching others for Christ--all Christians are. The notes I have seen so far help in all spheres of life, especially the spiritual if you have a mind to apply them spiritually. I like this bible so well I may buy the genuine leather edition. This one is the hardback and is well made as far as that goes. The paper is not overly thin, the binding seems sturdy. The print is that wonderful comfort print that Nelson has been using that I really, really appreciate. The layout is black and white with gold, nothing fancy but that is actually refreshing. I wish I had given this study bible a chance a long time ago.
A Bible for all leaders.
This is a review of the Maxwell Leadership Bible, 3rd Edition published by Thomas Nelson. I am a lifelong student of the Bible, and also an individual who serves in various leadership functions in the church I attend and the school where I teach. One of the easiest ways I have found to develop personally as a leader and Christian is to read books on leadership and books on faith. The Maxwell Leadership Bible is an exceptional blending of the two book types. John C. Maxwell is a noted leader who has spent his entire life teaching leadership principles from a foundation of the Bible. Just reading the notes and articles included in this Bible is enough to know that Maxwell knows his stuff. The edition that I have uses the New King James Version text as its foundation (Full disclosure: I really like the NKJV!). Then, throughout the text are mixed in short biographies on people of the Bible and who they demonstrate (positively or negatively) leadership traits. Also, the text includes short articles, one-page readings, and margin-inserts connected to leadership principles, as well as to the 21 Qualities of Leaders and the 21 Laws of Leadership, for which John Maxwell is known. There are an impressive amount of additional articles and leadership resources int he back of the Maxwell Leadership Bible, as well as sorted indices for where one can find features on the 21 Qualities and 21 Laws. I like study Bibles. I like them when the supplementary materials do not distract the reader from the page. The Maxwell Leadership Bible does a good job in its layout to help prevent the reader from feeling distracted or overwhelmed. This edition also takes advantage of the Thomas Nelson Comfort Print font. That's actually the only big noticeable difference for me between the previous edition and this one. That and the color scheme of the pages. But those two things, though small, make a surprisingly big, positive difference. Paraphrased, John C. Maxwell writes that no matter what a person does, he or she is a leader in some capacity. The Maxwell Leadership Bible is a quality resource for anyone who identifies with the truth in that statement. I received my copy of the Maxwell Leadership Bible for free through the BookLook Bloggers program in exchange for reviewing it. I was not obligated to write a positive review; the opinions expressed are mine.
Leadership development from two of the best - God and John Maxwell!
I have NEVER been so excited to receive a Bible and I stalked its tracking from the moment I requested it. If you are interested in leadership and career development, then you are familiar with John Maxwell. If not, then you should be. I learned of his titles at work, when a woman from another department showed me a copy of The 7 Levels of Leadership given to her by HER boss. The book illustrated how you ascend those levels by developing yourself by caring for and about others, then developed others by teaching them to do the same. What better way to apply these principles and Maxwell's entire leadership oeuvre than by studying the Bible? Here, Maxwell presents his decades of leadership wisdom to the stories of the Bible, with tables, charts, and checklists that make the Bible truly accessible and a text for contemplation and reflection while connecting spiritually to the greatest teacher of all time - Jesus. In today's business world, and especially the political, leadership needs to be reevaluated as a place that starts from within, a place of authenticity. In addition to the remarkable leadership profiles, there are the pitfalls and lessons that Maxwell illustrates, such a greed, jealousy, and selfishness. You are receiving a walking tour through the world's greatest Book and instruction text by the very best. You really ARE receiving his entire leadership library interspersed through the Bible. It is amazing. This edition is gorgeous and will make a life-changing gift to yourself, a friend, or anyone who wants to be a servant of God. I am so thankful.
A study of John C. Maxwell’s Use of the Bible
Since John Maxwell declares the Bible is his major source for leadership principles, (The Maxwell Leadership Bible, inside dust cover), the reader must be discerning (2 Tim 4:1–5). One must remain attentive to his methods to interpret biblical texts. Is his approach biblical or unbiblical? (see MacArthur and Mayhue’s A Systematic Summary of Bible Truth, 134–35; Kaiser’s Toward an Exegetical Theology: Biblical Exegesis for Preaching and Teaching, and Zuck’s Basic Bible Interpretation: A Practical Guide to Discovering Biblical Truth). Two Examples of Dr. John C. Maxwell’s interpretations 1. The Parable of the Shrewd Manager from Luke 16 2. Adam and Eve: “Born to Lead!” from Genesis 1 The principle of the Luke 16:1–15 parable must be applied in accord with Jesus’ intent. While Jesus referred to the manager as unrighteous, wicked, shrewd, and evil, John Maxwell casually sees the manager as a “lousy leader.” Maxwell’s interpretation focuses on the manager’s behavior. Maxwell does not appear to consider Jesus’ primary audience as “the disciples.” Therefore, his application could be understood as an attempt to motivate the unredeemed to modify their behavior before regeneration. Maxwell lauds the unrighteous manager for his ability to proactively face his problems because “good leaders aren’t afraid to face reality.” Maxwell referred to the manager as a lousy, good, and godly leader. He says that the wicked manager “understood the value of relationships,” because, through these relationships, he received “a return on his investment.” Ignoring the wicked leader’s underhanded plan, Maxwell instead complimented the man’s influence over his victims and his ability “to make friends and get results.” Maxwell’s concluding thoughts are that the wicked manager “reminds us of the value of godly leadership (vv. 8–10). In the end, his master praised his shrewdness; but Jesus has a deeper lesson for us.” His abrupt conclusion says nothing about Jesus’ deeper lesson. Maxwell did not address the reason for the parable. He focused on the manager’s behavior, yet he says nothing about Jesus’ clearly stated purpose. Jesus’ wants the disciples to invest their financial resources in such a way that, like the wicked manager, they make friends. Believers must not desire friendships like the wicked manager’s whom he subjugated to himself; rather, they should seek friends who will receive believers into eternal dwellings (16:9). This parable teaches disciples to invest in Jesus’ Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20), so that when they enter eternity they will be welcomed into eternal dwellings (Luke 16:9). Jesus explained: “He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much” (16:10). Jesus wants believers to see that faithfulness, even with a little money, makes one a steward that can be trusted with true riches. Jesus concludes the parable in verse 11 saying, “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?” Jesus consistently compared wealth with heavenly riches (see 12:33; 18:22; Matt 6:19–21). His comparison deals with faithfully managing someone else’s assets. Jesus taught that if someone was unable to properly manage another person’s wealth, then, “who will give you that which is your own” (16:12)? The conclusion: “You cannot serve God and wealth,” because you will love one and despise the other (Luke 16:13). The financial gains God brings to believers through labor and marketplace success allows them to steward their financial resources to The Great Commission. Souls led to Christ will one-day welcome those who used their working income to advance the Great Commission into eternal dwellings (16:9). Adam and Eve: “Born to Lead!” From Genesis 1 Maxwell’s position on Genesis 1:27 is that “God commanded both male and female to rule (v. 27). Both men and women have been given the ability and authority to lead. Leadership is not gender specific.” In an inside-the-garden pre-fall condition Maxwell’s conclusion may have merit. However, in the post-fall outside-the-garden condition, his position could lead the unsuspecting to deny the New Testament injunction against women teaching or exercising authority over a man. In this case, Maxwell’s position violates how “one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the Living God, the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Tim 2:12; 3:15). Maxwell’s point would negate the purpose for Scripture’s sanction, which is that Adam was created first and then Eve (1Tim 2:13). Rather, “it was not Adam who was deceived but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression” (1 Tim 2:14). Contrary to Maxwell, it is for that reason that leadership in the church is gender specific. The pain Eve would bear for her sin is significant; however, Adam’s judgment is also substantial. Where once his job description was to rule all creatures and creation for his own food, his post-fall job requirements bring a significantly greater amount of exertion (Gen 2:5, 15, 19; 3:23), including painfully cultivating a cursed ground all the days of his life, 930 years (Gen 5:5). Each day for 930 years Adam toiled so that he could eat. Every morsel he put to his mouth served as a reminder of how the ground is cursed, cursed because after listening to his wife, and not to God’s one and only command, he ate from the tree. Through Adam’s one transgression, all subsequent men are condemned (Rom 5:18). Concerning Adam’s sin, Maxwell suggests that his “mistake” continues to be duplicated by spiritual leaders which “ultimately devastated the entire world” (page 7). Maxwell traces this devastation, not back to Adam’s rebellion against his God given first-hand revelation, but to his “spineless refusal to lead.” Maxwell’s conclusion could deceive unsuspecting leaders to think that the world’s rejection of God’s Word is not the result of Adam’s sin and God’s curse, but on a “spineless refusal to lead” (page 7). (From Dr. Eric Weathers’ dissertation and "A study of John C. Maxwell’s Use of the Bible").

Excellent Bible to Learn Leadership from the Best Examples
I first became aware of John Maxwell when I was in high school. I happened to be at a student leadership conference hearing from one of the vice presidents of Chick-Fil-A and he challenged us to read a particular book by Maxwell and promised that if we did, we could email him and he would reward us with $100. I read the book cover to cover, e-mailed the man, and was sent a one hundred dollar bill in the mail. God bless Chick-Fil-A! I learned of John Maxwell through a promised reward, but long after that $100 is gone, I am still benefiting from Maxwell’s leadership training. Thomas Nelson Publishers has released The Maxwell Leadership Bible. It is the New King James Version and the copy I am reviewing is a hardback. I have grown quite fond of hardbacks over the last couple of years because of their durability and their ability to stand tall on a shelf. If you remove the dust jacket, you will find a plain red backing on this Bible. Features Let’s talk about some of the features of this Bible. When it comes to study Bibles, the notes found in them are what’s important. The Maxwell Leadership Bible provides a wealth of notes and features. Here is the rundown: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: in-depth articles that reveal these laws as seen in the lives of Bible people. The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: insightful articles showing positive and negative examples of these qualities. Over 100 biographical profiles: times and events in people’s lives that reveal God’s truth about leadership. Introductions to the books of the Bible outlining God’s role in the lives of influential men and women. Hundreds of compelling short articles and expressive “read-as-you-go” notes on mentoring and influence. Thorough topical indexes for quick access to Scripture passages and articles addressing leadership issues. All of these features alone make this Bible worth the price of admission if you’re interested in leadership—and you should be—everyone is a leader whether that be through parenting, coaching, your job, on your team, or somewhere else. We all could learn to be better leaders. That is why this Bible interested me so much; I know I can and should be a better leader. Finer Details Now let’s talk about some of the finer details. The publisher has done a great job with these pages! As you can see from pictures, They are attractive. The blue passage summaries paired with the gold chapter numbers is visually pleasing. Not only that, but Thomas Nelson has developed their very own font called “comfort print” that is easy on the eyes and visually pleasing to read. Pair that with a generous 10-point print size and you’ve got a Bible that’s very easy on the eyes when it comes to reading. You won’t find the words of Christ in red in this Bible if that happens to be your preference (it isn’t mine so I’m glad that this feature was omitted). The page color used is a very true white. It really makes the blue accents pop when you first notice it. I especially appreciate the page thickness. Study Bibles are thick anyway, but Thomas Nelson has chosen a page thickness which allows for very little ghosting meaning that you don’t notice much of the font on the opposite side of the page. This is important because ghosting can be very distracting when you’re trying to meditate and focus on God’s Word. The Bible isn’t overly thick or heavy, but it’s still probably a Bible you’re going to use as a study resource rather than one you carry wherever you go. As stated earlier, this is the New King James Version. The NKJV is not my usual preference, but like I said, you’re getting this Bible more for it’s notes so don’t let version deter you. It includes one red ribbon built in bookmark and overall is a very attractive Bible. Conclusion Everyone is a leader. Everyone can be a better leader. I believe the best leadership lessons come from the Word of God. In my opinion, that makes The Maxwell Leadership Bible a very attractive resource.
Perfect for preachers, teachers and youth bible study groups.
This is a high quality hard cover Bible that includes inserts on nearly every page that discuss the relevance of sections with regard to leadership. I provide one example in the picture below. I found most of them very interesting and relevant, particularly to youth. The only issue with this outstanding Bible is that it is printed on high quality, but thin, paper. You can see the writing on the other side of the page bleeding through to the page you are reading (see picture). It is typical of most Bibles and almost necessary for a 1600 page book. The human eye can easily ignore it, but for those with poor eyesight, this may be a problem. The type is small but very readable. Note that this is in the New King James Version (NKJV). I would have preferred the King James Version (KJV), but that is personal preference and I must accept the fact that at 72, I am out of touch with the average Bible reader. But I find this Bible a pleasure to read, and I found virtually all of the leadership inserts informative and useful, even for an old reader.

Maxwell Leadership Bible!
The NKJV - The Maxwell Leadership Bible: Lessons in Leadership from the Word of God by John Maxwell is an excellent resource tool. I have the first edition of the Leadership Bible and find this edition to be an excellent update. Features include ~ Now available in Thomas Nelson’s NKJV Comfort Print® typeface Over 120 “Profiles in Leadership” lessons drawn from the people of the Bible Hundreds of compelling short articles and notes on mentoring and influence A complete reference index to the 21 Laws of Leadership and the 21 Qualities of a Leader Easy-to-read 10-point print size I enjoy reviewing Bibles because I want to see what is out there which can help Christ followers better grow in Christ. I have been a long time fan of Maxwell's writings. And in this Bible there are many nuggets of leadership truth available to the reader. Maxwell takes the "21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader", another of his best-selling leadership concepts and partners it with some of the well known, and not so well known characters throughout Scripture. Hundreds of compelling short articles and notes on mentoring and influence, and there are over 120 “Profiles in Leadership” lessons drawn from the people of the Bible. Not only are there positive ways we can do leadership, but he looks at some of the shortcomings we find ourselves in, areas such as pride, envy and a me-only attitude are some examples. Overall, this is an excellent Bible. Do remember, this is not a study Bible. I received this Bible from Booklookbloggers in exchange for an honest opinion.

NKJV Maxwell Leadership Bible
I was a little hesitant to get this Bible because I'm not a pastor or have a leadership role in a church; however, after reading through it, I think this Bible is for every Christian because we all are in a position of influencing others by our actions and how we live our life. I must be one of the few who is not not familiar with John Maxwell. His articles and notes in the Bible are helpful, and I especially enjoy reading the outline of each book. His insights are helpful and I know I will enjoy getting into it more and more. The hardback book is quiet large but made well. I love the red cover. The pages are a bit thin and will not lend well to lots of note taking, but that's okay because I have another Bible that I use for notes. Getting into the Word daily is so important. I hope others will take the time each day to spend with our Father. This is an excellent daily Bible for home study.
A special edition of The Bible for those seeking leadership guidance
This book is a version of the New King James Version edition of the Bible with extra articles and commentaries from Maxwell that use the characters and stories of the Bible to illustrate leadership principles. The hardcover book makes a good gift and is large and easy to read. For a Bible this is fairly expensive, so you might pass on this if you are just seeking a larger print Bible. It is nice to have select ideas and lessons highlighted throughout the book for those seeking this type of leadership guidance, so this book would be ideal for those who enjoy reading The Bible and also work in leadership roles, including roles of leadership in a family.
Leadership in the Bible
This is a New King James text of the Bible with inset paragraphs regarding leadership and introductions to books that highlighting the leadership aspects therein. The 21 Laws of Leadership are given near the back with Bible passages that illustrate or support those laws. The pages are not quite opaque enough, as print often shows through, making highlighting unadvised. The pages are also ecru instead of white, which I don't like. There is a ribbon bookmark attached to the spine, which I do like. If you are or hope to be a leader, this Bible will focus your study on that topic. As long as you are careful not to let leadership be the only theme you see in your Bible study, this is a very nice NKJV Bible.
The Maxwell Leadership Bible
The latest edition of "The Maxwell Leadership Bible" contains significantly more information and details from the 2002 edition I have. While the revision is still the New King James Edition, more leadership insights from several of Maxwell's books are included. While the layout may be different, the format is still easy to follow and is full of useful information. Look forward to many future uses of this valuable title. I was given a copy by BookLook Bloggers in exchange for a review and appreciate the opportunity.
Excellent leadership Bible
I am a Catholic that works for a small non-profit and I have been searching for a leadership Bible. I listen to John Maxwell on the radio so I picked it up. I love all the notes that he provides. I'm big on simple to follow lists, which is his teaching style (opposed to overly long narrative). Whether you are a pastor, business leader, youth leader, business leader, or even a volunteer leader, this is a great study Bible.
