How Successful People Lead: Taking Your Influence to the Next Level

I love the five levels! I may forever be at the bottom as far as pay and society but i realize I’m displaced. Everyone can be the best they can and strive to get to another level even without being advanced. We all keep starting over when new people arrive anyways. It keeps us grounded! Being at a different level is sometimes an acknowledgement from self that one is doing many things at another level(s). Be humble, positive, creative, innovative, kind, and never forget where you came from! Keep striving to do things at a different level. This book is guidance but lacks the realization that some people are at much higher levels intrinsically than given credit for ….especially those who work for minimum wage most of their life and lead from their position with God’s help. I love this book combined with the Bible and several others.

In the classic John Maxwell fashion, this book teaches us how to become the very best type of leader that we can be, but also describes how we can bring others along with us on that journey. In the end, true leaders create leaders all around them- and that is the crux of this book. But before improving the leadership skills of others we must first take a good long look at ourselves and where we stand within the 5 levels of leadership, as outlined at the beginning of this book. From there, we can use these tips and strategies to advance our leadership skills and become more empowering with each lesson from each day. Maxwell describes 5 levels of leadership- beginning with Positional leadership at the most basic level and leading up to Permission, Production, People Development, and finally Pinnacle. Throughout the book the author provides an archtype of each level of leadership, which helps us draw on examples from our own personal and professional lives. Within each section we get an overview of the characteristics of the leader of that level, along with the opportunities and potential pitfalls of being at that particular level. Similar to many of John Maxwell's previous works, "How Successful People Lead" is written in a straightforward, easy-to-read manner. It's short length makes for an easy read in a single sitting- but do not be mislead: this is not a book you simply read once and leave on your Kindle- no not at all. Rather, the wise leaders will use this book as a compass that helps navigate themselves and their team through each level of leadership until they have reached the status as a Pinnacle leader (Level 5), and- more importantly- have created a group of Pinnacle leaders around them. Maxwell shares an incredible wealth of knowledge, steps, and actions needed to make any person a profound leader in their organization, yet leaves the door open for readers to take his advice and put it to practical use. This is quite common in Maxwell's writings, but it is actually quite helpful because the general principles provide a unique opportunity for readers to apply the lessons to their own situations. No matter what level of leadership you most relate with, this book is bound to strike a chord with all leaders!

A bit of a dry read but it breaks down every point. Still very helpful to use with audible and follow along.

It's a small book so it's great to slide in your purse when you are on the go. I think it's a great book for those in leadership or looking to be in leadership. It's simple, straight forward and broken down. We done it as a team book club. <3

Ive been reading John Maxwell books now for the last 20 yrs. and i can say without a doubt He is the best in writing about leadership. His latest abridged book " How successful people lead" is a quick read that touches on all the levels of leadership that a leader will experience on his or her way up the ladder. Each chapter is full of great advice for you no matter what level you are at in your career.There is a lot of leadership books on the shelves today, but you won't find any in my opinion that are as good as anything John Maxwell has written. I have never met Mr. Maxwell but he is a mentor of mine thru His writing. God Bless You John and Thank You.

All I can say is wow. Great book to shift your thoughts and actions about your leadership style and actions.

I liked that this book gave me several epiphanies about who I am, and my position on leadership. I'm not as mature as I thought I was nor am I finished developing my leadership qualities. I recommend this book to anyone trying to make it in business management. This was a very insightful, and interesting book indeed! I finished it up in no time.

The book is a great book for those who are leading others. Good sensible advice. Helping people who lead to treat the people they lead as valuable people. Like it. Read it more than once and this was a book I bought for someone I care about who just was promoted to a new leadership position. They like it as well. I have not found any of John Maxwell's books to be any kind of a disappointment.

This is a great book that every leader, instructor of leadership or student of leadership should possess.. I highly recommend Dr. John Maxwell as an author and speaker. Too, I highly recommend this seller who is great in communication, packaging, and delivery.

John Maxwell has a grip on what it means to be a true leader, presented in a very easy to read form. I've read this book three times, chatted about it with my family and friends while on vacation and used it for a book club.

Such a great read on how to connect with your people, love the 5 levels of leadership, it has really opened my eyes to where I am at, as well as see what I need to change in order to become a better leader. Everyone who works no matter where should read this book.

I kept it in my office when i got promoted to a managing role. Had this for a while and really enjoyed the read. Its fairly small, can be picked up easily. Sometimes i get bored when i read too much motivational things, but this one was useful.

My Pastor referred this book and I found it to be very very uplifting and it has inspired me to be a better and greater leader. It has shown me more than I thought there was to ever know about Leadership in the Church. I have a friend that's anxiously awaiting for it. I highly recommend this book.

Like all Maxwell books, this one tells you what you need to do to be a leader. Has some of the other things that he has in other books, but if you have read all the rest, it is good reinforcement.

The content of the book was good. I was disappointed in the size of the book. The description doesn't give measurements and I was expecting it to be the standard 6 x 9 book. We ordered a case to give as gifts and when we received them, they were much smaller than expected 4.5 x 6.5. Other than that, the price was good and we received them in a few days.

This is not a one time read book. As a leader one should read and apply this book at least annually

Good book. As with all his books he show us an insight we need to fulfill our lives as well as improve the world around us.

In one sentence...John establishes levels of leadership within social interactions and provides practical questions and actions associated with achieving and maintaining those levels.

If you have not read The Five Levels of Leadership, then this may be a good summary. If you have read The Five Levels of Leadership, then do not buy this book. I wish I had been more careful in reviewing the description because there is no new information in this book. It is an abbreviated version of 5 levels. After return shipping my refund would be less than $2, so I'll guess I'll give it away rather than wasting my time. It makes me wary to buy any of the similarly marketed books by this publisher.

The book is a little shallow. Nothing I haven't heard before. Some parts were interesting. Conviction to Lead by Albert Mohler is far better.

I am midway thru this series of books. "Lead" was my first read, and is so far the most important of the series to me. Maxwell drives home his theory on the levels of leadership in a Very direct and straight forward way. I have also read "think" and "win" which for me have an overabundance of quotes, which i find distracting. I'm here for Maxwell, and his point of view, direction and ideas are very well organized and self examined in this text. Any leader of any kind, from housewife to coach to upper management should give their time to this short read.

I read this book for the first time and was shocked at what i learned about leadership. What most leaders don't understand is Leadership isn't about being in a title or position of power. It is about investing in people and contributing to the organization and community. If you don't like working with people and helping them then you can't develop good leadership skills.

How Successful People Lead is another work derived from a bigger book, in this case The 5 Levels of Leadership that its 304 pages long, while this one is just 160. If you have read other reviews you know I love systematic books, in the sense that the more the book is structured the more it becomes understandable to me, and this one is no exception. Maxwell starts with glimpses of the whole content to give a better look at what’s coming next. Afterwards each chapter explains different perspectives from the five levels of leadership: Position Permission Production People Development Pinnacle If you are part of a big company or you’re working on a small business this book can help you, not only to know the current level where you’re at, but also to equip you with the necessary tools and information to climb to the next one. One of the things I really liked it’s that no matter the ‘size’ of your leadership, you’ll feel identified with the characteristics and situations presented by Maxwell. Finally, I felt this book it’s not only about your personal development as a leader for your own satisfaction, but it’s more about your personal responsibility as a leader to achieve greater things on behalf of those under your leadership. I received this book for free from Hachette Book Group for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Heard HOW SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE LEAD: TAKING YOUR INFLUENCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL (Hachette Audio), written by John C. Maxwell and read by Chris Sorenson. Though this is a short book, it is packed with powerful ideas taken from the author's most requested speaking topic that he has presented to FORTUNE 100 companies and leaders around the world. To cite just a few of them: * Titles are not enough. They are ultimately empty. * People not positions are a leader's most valuable asset. It takes no time to let others know that you value them. * If somebody on your team can do a task as well or better than you can, give him or her responsibility for it. * Helping others grow and develop brings great joy to any leader. * Helping others develop their potential enables leaders to become world class. * If you've become successful, it's only because a lot of people have helped you along the way. I've enjoyed several other books by Maxwell with respect to leadership. This is up there as being one of his best.

Was asked to read this book by ministry staff. Was really a call out to their disappointing leadership, or lack thereof.

John Maxwell has established himself as a thoughtful, forward looking, provider of very solid advice for managers. This is another great example of his work.

I love the way Maxwell layout out principles of leadership. It's a must read book. i give to youth leaders and university students are a prize for excercising leadership roles.

Good book

In How Successful People Lead, John C. Maxwell describes a five-step pattern of leadership. If you read the fine print on the back cover it says, “Derived from material previously published in The 5 Levels of Leadership.” In other words this book is just a repeat of the previous one and an obvious attempt by Maxwell to get people to buy more of his books. Maxwell’s five levels include: Level 1—position. People follow you solely because of your position. Level 2—permission. People follow you because they want to. Level 3—production. People follow you because of what you have done. Level 4—people development. People follow you because of what you have done for them. Level 5—pinnacle, People follow you because of who you are and what you represent. For each level Maxwell uses the same framework: positives of the level, negatives of the level, best behaviors in the level and beliefs that can help you move up to the next level. It is all canned as if it is a PowerPoint presentation. Notice that each level starts with the letter “P”. Moreover Maxwell ignores the reality that the situation often determines a leader. Gates and Jobs are leaders, but only because they came of age in a particular time in technology. Furthermore, Maxwell claims that you have to go up the levels sequentially as one might climb a flight of stairs. Not necessarily. Gandhi may be said to be a pinnacle leader, but he did not go through the sequence. Mother Teresa is another example. In sum, Maxwell shows no originality in this book. It may be of some value to readers looking for one approach to leadership, but I would not consider it to be a definitive book on this topic.

This book just takes ideas from “Good to Great” by Jim Collins and “Built to Last” by Collins and Jerry Porras and (barely) repackages them. I'm honestly surprised there wasn't legal action taken. It's true that one could argue that they are writing about the same subject matter and can, therefore, arrive at the same conclusions. However, this book uses many of the same relatively obscure references such as Admiral James Stockdale and Coach John Wooden, an analogy about the laws of physics, Level 5 leadership, and a re-named version of the Hedgehog Concept! Furthermore, Collins’ positions are based on his own research, which he consistently shares and is documented in the appendices. Maxwell apparently pulled all of his ideas out of nowhere. Lastly, it came out 12 years after Good to Great! I enjoyed the content, but none of it is original.

I've read 15+ of his books. they all have the same content, same examples. i just got bored.

I liked this book so much that I bought 7 more copies. One each for every member of my team. It was something like $6.00 per copy and it's the best investment I have made and the least expensive.

Read it back in 2015, went a little crazy seeing the book held so much valuable knowledge. I sent it to a former CEO so he could read it. I wish I could have given a Copy to every employee to read at the time. Read it twice and will read it again. Thank You! ❤️🔥

Para mí este es un libro regular tirándole a malo. Aparte de que no se especifica que este libro es un resumen de otro libro del mismo autor; y si leíste (como yo) el otro libro, estás haciendo un doble gasto. Ahórrate tu dinero si ya leíste el otro libro. Y si lees éste, no veo necesario comprar el otro ya que con este resumen en más que suficiente para comprender lo que el autor trata de exponer. Hablando del libro en sí y de los 5 niveles de liderazgo que el autor expone; sólo los primeros 3 me hacen sentido. Los últimos 2 me parecen ya una exageración o algo demasiado idealista, algo un tanto alejado de la realidad. Y como es costumbre en los libros de este autor hay contenido que está de sobra y que no agrega mucho valor como por ejemplo el interminable número de ejemplos de personas irrelevantes o anécdotas totalmente sin trascendencia. Si ya has leído otros libros de él y no te molesta leer e invertirle tiempo a tanta paja, puede que este libro no te decepcione.

Excellent information for leaders of any type is covered . There is a focus on the personality and character of a leader. Importantly there is a priority of people over tasks. I would highly recommend this book to potential leaders.

He comprado muchos ejemplares de el en el mismo pedido y la verdad me quedé muy decepcionado. En pocas palabras y hablando en español y como se dice en España, "eres un hiper exajerado, eres un hiper presumido, eres un hiper bocazas, y un hiper mentiroso, etc, etc y como le diria Socrates si estuviera presente a John C Maxwell "lo único que tu sabes, es que tu no sabes puñetera idea de los negocios". Bueno amigos, vosotros mismos decidís, es un buen libro para quedaros dormidos en el sofá de lo aburrido que es. Un saludo.
