Hippos Go Berserk!

This is one of the first Boynton books I remember. A college friend gave me the hardcover (I still have it, and trust me, it's been years); I gave a copy to a grad school friend, as she went off to pursue her (very successful) career. Since then, I've purchased countless copies (along with other favorite Boynton books) as new baby gifts. It was instantly one of my great niece's favorites, and her reaction to "All the hippos go berserk!"--captured on video--is hilarious. I worked for years as a children's librarian, and made sure our library system always had fresh copies of this, and Sandra Boynton's other superb books, for all to borrow and enjoy.

I love the title of this book and I was originally going to buy it based solely on the fact that it makes me laugh every time I say it. Love Sandra Boynton’s books! My daughters loved them growing up and now my grandson loves them too! I hadn’t seen this one before, but at 16 mos he sat very quietly listening and he loved the simple yet fun illustrations. Nice short attention keeping books for toddlers.

We went through 2 copies of this when my kids were toddlers, and now I always buy it as gifts for others. This is one of those can't-go-wrong presents for 1-4 year-olds.

I purchased this book, along with a selection of other Boynton books, as a baby shower gift. I love Sandra Boynton's books because, unlike many board books, they're entertaining to adults as well as young tots. If parents have fun reading to their kids, and thus do it more often, Boynton's doing a great service to the cause of literacy. I was honestly in hysterics just reading the title of this book, but the inside was good too! The illustrations, the rhymes, and the counting are all beautifully quirky and playful, and leave me wishing I was invited to the hippo party!

My son loves this book, but what stands out about it is that it has cute details that make it more fun for the adult who has to read the book umpteen million times to the child (often in a row). For example, there are certain details in the pictures (eg, the refined cocktail-drinking hippos taken aback by the wild party-animal hippos--don't worry, it's not like your kid knows the drinks are alcoholic; the Whistler's Mother Hippo painting), and the book features some more sophisticated grammar, vocabulary, and rhyme scheme than most board books (although not to the point that it is totally over kids' heads). I think it is good for the child to mix it up a bit and include some books with more challenging grammar and vocabulary as well as very simplistic books. And it really helps when some of the books in the pile are ones that don't make me cringe when my son wants to read them AGAIN. Indeed, I will sometimes try to steer him toward this one when I am getting way too sick of the duller ones! I also suspect this book will hold my son's interest far longer than many of his other books. He is 16 months now and has been enjoying this book for a long time even though he isn't talking much yet.

My one year old grandson loves this book. He usually wants it read two or three times in a sitting. Animated and funny story, easy for toddlers to grasp and eye catching illustrations, as all Boynton books are.

I love Hippos Go Berserk. One hippo, all alone, calls 2 more on the phone... and so begins a wild night of hippo indulgence. The hippos, looking suspiciously like Connecticut socialites, arrive in groups (starting with 2 at a time, going up to 9), party berserk-ly all night long, and then leave in their original groups by helicopter, Conastoga wagon, etc. You get the point. The book rhymes and has a nice beat to it, and you'll start referencing it frequently in your day to day life (Parents go Berserk!).

Someone must have given this to us as a gift. It's one of the few children's (baby) books that we have that don't drive us crazy. There is learning (counting), a clever rhyme (not insipid), cute drawings (Sandra Boynton), and hippos of course. My husband and I read it differently than each other, and it doesn't matter -- this has been our daughter's favorite book from 3 months old to now (16 months). I just bought four more as gifts -- best book!

Super cute book about hippos. It is a favorite in our house after many years. I now purchase this book for all baby showers.

This book, like so many of Boynton's books, is cute and clever. A lonely hippo invites over other hippos (arriving in groups of 2 through 9), and eventually has enough for a party. Then, leaving in groups of 9 through 2, they depart. The book lodges itself in your mind well enough such that, when we go see the hippos at the zoo, I find myself saying, "One hippo, all alone, calls two hippos on the phone." And, I'm not surprised when another parent nearby answers, "Three hippos at the door, bring along another four!" A great find for kids 18 months and up.

But, I was pleasantly surprised when I read it at our library first and found it's a cool counting book. Children will learn their numbers as they they count the hippos attending the crazy party and learn to count backwards as the hippos all return home in the morning. We gave this book to our niece close to 30 years ago. She now has children of her own, so we bought it again, in the good-for-small-hands board version. It still makes me laugh out loud. Sandra Boynton's illustrations are wonderful. It's supposedly just a counting story, but you want to look at every picture and figure out what everybody is up to. When, on the last page, the original hippo misses the others, you naturally start over!

Absolutely adore this book! My daughter is pretty obsessed with this one definitely! Also love that it counts forwards and backwards, and the rhyming pattern is great.

Who doesn't love Boynton books? This is another great one. I love them all - as does my granddaughter.

Everything Sandra Boynton has written for kids is wonderful, but this book is particularly great. My kid loves counting the hippos and finding things hidden in the room where they are partying. Lots of fun to read, too - the way she has written this book is almost musical without being sing-songy.

My granddaughter, at 2 1/2 has very discriminating taste in literature. We can both recite another Boynton treasure, Snuggle Puppy, by heart when she goes asleep. I used to love Sandra Boynton's work from the adult perspective, particularly with out shared chocolate addiction, but now I have a whole new reason to appreciate her!

Books for great granddaughter

We have several Boynton books - Opposites, Doggies, What's Wrong, Little Pookie? -- and this is the best one, hands down. It's super cute and the language has a nice rhythm. We've been reading it to our seven month old since birth and it's one of the few we've been reading that long that isn't making me bonkers at this point. Highly recommend!

This dynamic tale centers around the complex hippopotamus social structure and the intriguing theme of addition to the point of excess. The experience of reading this exuberant novel is one sure to stick with the reader for a lifetime, opening the minds of adolescents , and providing an intimate perspective of reality for the older reader. As with many of today's most successful stories, Hippos Go Berserk begins with a relatable character, lonely and desiring something more in his life. It is this thirst for adventure that so magnificently drives him to summon his friends in hopes of excitement. Hippos arrive from near and far in sets ascending the number line, seeming innocent and enjoyable until the elusive number six. "Six hippos show up with a guest" writes Boynton, leaving the reader to question the identity of said guest. Depicted as a blue fuzzy ambiguous monster, the guest opens the readers' mind to the possibilities and beast-like qualities within themselves. Am I merely an uninvited guest at the metaphorical house party of a lonely hippopotamus? It is the complex inner monologue Boynton creates that really sets this book apart from her other masterpieces (i.e. Doggies). The height of excitement in the plot of this novel falls directly in the center, demonstrating the dangers of excess for the lonely, and spawning the iconic statement, "ALL THE HIPPOS GO BERSERK". This line goes down in history, as the quantity of hippos begin to go down in number. The plot itself concludes as each hippo deserts the illustrious party, leaving our first lonely hippo, missing those he has lost. Thus, in an epic of a mere 29 pages, we observe a lonesome hero rise to power, a self discovery inducing guest in our hearts, the height of an empire of hippopotamus delight, and the return to monotony for our unlucky hero. It is with this condensed form of literature and involved thematic concepts that Boynton rises to the forefront in the board book universe.

Since you end up reading some of these baby books over and over and over again, it's good to have one that keeps you entertained (as well as baby). A very cute counting book with fun rhymes and illustrations

Very fun book. My son loves the page where they go berserk (and pointing out all the crazy things happening). The counting part of it is beyond him at this point (he's 20 months), but it's nevertheless a great fun book with lots of things to focus on.

Great children’s book!

One of my all-time favorite books to read to my baby. I used to read it to my older boys and when I found out I was pregnant this time it was the first thing I knew I needed to buy.

I also heard this recited on ER, but did not realize it was from this book until after I bought it. We have so many of Boynton's books, my daughter loves hippos and we are introducing counting, so why not buy the book. It is a book that must travel with us in the car. It is a very fun and engaging way to count. A plus is that it also counts backwards after "All the hippos go berserk". As in all her books, the illustrations are terrific. We are huge Sandra Boynton fans.

My favorite will always be Moo Baa LaLaLa. But this is a COUNTiNG book and you can never have too many of those! This book counts up to a certain number as party guest arrive and back down again as they leave. How cute is that!

I purchased two of these, one for each neice. It is a great way to teach the beginnings of numbers (to ten going up and in reverse). I think that adults will get a kick out of reading it as well (at least the first couple of dozen times).

My 22 month old is learning to count and this is a cute, fun counting book. There are a couple pages that don't flow as well as others when you read them aloud, but its still a great book!

After checking out this title from the library more times than I care to remember, I had to have it in my home.

This is my go-to gift for 1-3 year olds. The rhymes are silly and catchy, and my 2.5 year old niece immediately memorized it and then would laugh and complain whenever my brother mixed up the rhymes. I like this book so much that I don't mind reading it and re-reading it 10 times in a row when my nieces say "again" again. It's a cute counting book (and also addition if you stop and ask the little reader how many hippos we have now).

We purchased and read this book to our children when they were tiny. They LOVED it and would have us read it over and over! We love the art and the fun story. Now that they are a bit older....if it is brought up...they will STILL go grab this board book...and they want US to read it to them. We have it memorized! Our copy is well loved, it is visible....a will be a family treasure for years to come! I have purchased this book several times to give as baby shower gifts also! A good book needs to be shared.

Bought this book and 3 other Sandra Boynton books (Are you A Cow?, Snuggle Puppy, and Doggies) for Christmas gifts for my best friend's 2-year old and my boyfriend's niece who is almost a year old. I think they will be perfect for mom and dad to read to them, and the girls to begin to learn to read as they grow! They are board books-- thick and good quality, that will be easy for tiny hands to hold... or put in their mouth... or whatever... haha. This one is a counting book that is based around hippos. I definitely picked it just because of the word "Berserk" which is one of my favorite words ever! It is very cute, and will be very fun for mom and dad as well as the girls :)

We absolutely LOVE Sandra Boynton books and this one is no exception! Bright, colorful, funny, and entertaining! Our little one picks this one out of all of the others on the shelf. Sturdy board book holds up to drops, bends, bites, and drool very well! A must read for the little ones! This one is especially hilarious & my little one loves the party part!

I love the title of this book and I was originally going to buy it based solely on the fact that it makes me laugh every time I say it. But, I was pleasantly surprised when I read it at our library first and found it's a cool counting book. For my younger daughter it's good for her to hear the numbers but for my older daughter, it's fun for us to actually count and add all of those hippos. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because the rhythm and meter of the first half of the book is way better than the last half. When the hippos are leaving it feels more clumsy and like I'm tripping over the words a bit because they don't follow the usual rhyme scheme.

Simple, rhyming lines on each page make this an enjoyable counting book, and I love the creative ways the hippos come to and from the party. When my daughter was learning her numbers when she started pointing to the large number on each page and saying it out loud we turned the pages. This is one book that I don't mind reading over and over (and believe me I've read it A LOT over the last 1 1/2 years). We don't read it as much now that she's almost 3 and enjoying books with more advanced story lines, but I can see her going back to this book as an early reading book.

I am certain that my kid enjoys this book as much as I do. Modestly I will say that I do a bang-up job of reading it to her, inserting appropriate emotion and inflection into the different pages. It's a really fun, up and down counting type book. Others seem to think that the way the prose is printed in the book was done incorrectly - that is, they think certain lines should be on the same page, but this was done for effect. I always give more info than the prose indicates - we (AKA I) discuss different things are particular hippos - nothing the cater waiters in their uniforms, the party hippos with their hats and balloons....and then we note how they all get mixed up together when they depart. Favorite page is the "berserk" page, where everyone is whooping it up. Love Sandra Boynton. Her books are a HUGE hit in our house.

This is a book I enjoy reading--the Boyton books are great for both parents and child. We all love it.

I bought this book to read at my 2 yo grandsons daycare for grandparnets day. It was perfect. Great fun for all, lots of smiles and held attention of even the younger ones. Every one enjoyed.
