But YES!!! The hippopotamus!!!
This was my twin’s favorite book when they were small. I don’t know where that copy is now, so I bought another just to have for myself as a momento from those joyous times. I used to be very expressive when I’d read it to them, using a sad perplexed voice in the first part, and using the ending as a grand crescendo; “And she just doesn’t know - Should she stay? Should she go? But YES!!! The hippopotamus!!!” It’s a good book for that kind of thing. Their eyes would be all shiny and they’d be sucking madly on their binkies, filled with - I don’t know what - glee? They’d just love it. It was part of their nighttime ritual. Tearing up here!
Alternate interpretation of the book - maybe the hippo is just shy, not excluded?
I wonder if this book is horribly misunderstood. I too read it at first as the hippopotamus being excluded - but then I thought deep thoughts wondering why a wonderful children's author would write that storyline. It doesn't make sense. So I read the book with fresh eyes and I think I've found a different meaning for the book - maybe it is that the hippopotamus is shy. The other animals run by at the end and they notice she's watching and so they invite her - and she's shy so she isn't sure "should she stay or should she go" but then she jumps in and has a blast. Then we're left wondering about the armadillo - and I just saw that there was a new book published that seems to answer that question - and I have a board book buying habit/problem... So I'm off to answer that question as soon as Prime can ship me the book
The exhilarating, riveting and rhyming tale of one lonely being's stuggles with constant rejection
This is our family's 3rd copy of this classic board book from Sandra Boynton...we literally read the others to death through our 5 (soon to be 6) children, so it was time to get a fresh copy. This adorable story is about a hippopotamus who watches life go by...everyone busy with social lives and activities that pointedly do not include her. Far be if from me to give a plot spoiler on this delightful 14 page board book, but it definitely leaves you with a tear jerking (ok..maybe it is only our 18 month old who fake cries and gives the character a sympathetic kiss?) ending that begs for a sequel. The illustrations are absolutely charming and the range of emotions this seemingly silly little rhyming store evokes is surprising! We always include this in our new baby gift baskets as it is a long time family favorite that the older kids never tire of reading to their siblings. **Odd note...somewhere along the line, the author changed a few words in this book and, for those of us who had completely memorized the original text, it was mildly annoying... lol She did the same thing with another one of our favorites
Horrible story line
Hate the message of this book, especially on the last page. They finally include the hippo but still leave out the armadillo. I dont want my daughter thinking this is acceptable behavior. I took a sharpie and changed the ending to include the armadillo.
A revised edition?
We love board books... they are a wonderful introduction to reading for infants and toddlers. My 4 star rating has more to do with a change in the wording on the first page than anything else - the original reads "A hog and a dog do a dance in a bog..." this new one reads "cavort in a bog" - I can appreciate expanding one's vocabulary, but how many little ones understand "cavort"? Wondering why the change in wording, and very much prefer the original. Otherwise, it is the same well written book that we've had to replace with each of our young children because it is so well loved... board books are intended for the less-than-gentle book handling of little hands so they aren't expected to last forever, but these do a good job of holding up to one or two littles before needing to be replaced. Sticky fingers touched the page? No problem, a lightly damp cloth will wipe off the page without ruining the book, unlike regular paper pages. Simple and easy. Now who with little ones doesn't like simple and easy?? This has long been a favorite toddler story in our household, though it's a tough call to decide which of Sandra Boynton's books are the best, because quite frankly, they are all good!
One of the best baby books
This book is the one I always give at baby showers. It was/is an ultimate favorite for both my kids when they were anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. It is repetitive enough that they can share in the reading, and not boring in any way, and has the greatest ending that can be read with great enthusiasm. I've read this book probably realistically 500 times in the past 4 years. Maybe 800. And never get tired of it and neither do the kids, which is an amazing feat. We have so many books thanks to garage sales, library book sales, and this one stands out. Highly recommend. Oh also, the best Boynton book by far. Go for her older rather than new releases.
Great Story, Adorable Pictures
Sandra Boynton writes, hands down, my favorite children's books. I learned about them when our school librarian bought a couple for my daughter. Her illustrations are adorable and her stories are too! Barnyard Dance is my favorite, but I won almost all of them. Some are educational (Opposites) and some are just fun (Dinosaur Dance). I have also bought these as gifts and everyone absolutely adores them. If you are looking for a short, fun book for a little kid, get one of these. They might not be complex enough to hold the attention of older kids though (but I don't know because I don't have any older kids).
Learning about shyness
This is a truly adorable book, which I believe shows the message of some personalities being shy and needing others to go out of their way to include them. Our 18 month old daughter picks this out from her many books on a daily basis. When it comes to the page of the hippopotamus not knowing if she should stay or go, our daughter always says "awe" as if she is being emphathetic to the hippos shyness. We have read this to her 3 and 5 year old cousins and they enjoyed it as well. The three year old asked why the hippo didn't like to play with the other animals. He seemed to really think about it when I explained that she wanted to but she was too shy to join in. As with all of her books, Sandra Boynton gives great rhyming and fun characters. We have quite a collection of her books but I would say this is in my top five of enjoyable ones to read over and over.
I love her! The kids love her
Sandra Boynton! I love her! The kids love her... The Hippopotamus wants to do all of the things she sees some other kid animals doing but she's too afraid to ask to play... Then they ask her and she is so happy and goes to play.... But not the Armadillo:) spoiler sorry... It is a really good book! Kids love it! It shows to be kind and invite other kids along if they are alone and look like they want to play... Good values in these books!
Clever and cute with a great message
This is another great Boynton book with clever rhymes and illustrations that also makes a clear point our toddlers instantly grasped. Several animals are out having fun, a hog and a frog play in the bog, a cat and some rats try on hats etc... but not the Hippopotamus. The hippo lurks in each scene lonely and excluded until finally the others invite her (him? does it matter?) to join. But then we see a new animal excluded, and the girls instantly get it. They should welcome everyone. It's a great message for kids of all ages and told very, very well.

The story kind of rolls off your tongue in a nice rhythmic way
Such a cute book. The story kind of rolls off your tongue in a nice rhythmic way. The only thing I found odd was the last page. I just didn't get it. The whole book is about the hippopotamus that didn't join in any of the activites and finally she joins in and the very last page says "But not the armadillo." Very weird, but otherwise cute.
poor hippo
This is a very cute little book. Plus, it's sort of fun to read, so when my toddler wants it repeated a thousand times, I am happy to oblige. It really should have came with the follow up book about the armadillo though...
Great book for wee ones!
A friend gave us this book for our first born child. We now purchase it for all friends who are welcoming new little ones into their lives. It is so sweet... so funny... and so well illustrated. And I still giggle (as did my children) at "but not the armadillo..."
for those who love snuggling and reading with their small kids
Sandra Boynton's "But Not the Hippopotamus," "Moo, Baa, La La La," and "The Going to Bed Book" are three books that should be in every household with small children. These are definitely classics, for those who love snuggling and reading with their small kids. Silly and funny. These books have been "classics" and steady sellers for 30 years. A lot of little kids have laughed at the silliness in these books. Boynton did something really good when writing and drawing these charming and colorful board books. (My grown kids and I can still recite these stories by heart.)
Cute story the kids will love
It's a cute story about a hippopotamus who is feeling left out, but of course it ends on a happy note. Very cute book with great illustrations. My 1 year old and 5 year old both love this book. It is the perfect size to just slide right into our diaper bag and we can pull it out whenever we need some quick entertainment for the kids.
My daughter's favorite book
This is my daughter's favorite book, we read it at least ten times a day. I actually bought it twice, the first had an unfortunate day at the pool, and I immediately ordered another one because we can't function without this book.
Very cute! Sturdy with thick pages!
I can't wait to send this off to my friend for her daughters! She has a a 5 year old and an almost 2 year old. The older absolutely loves to read and she loves to read to her little sister so I figured this would be perfect for both of them! It's really cute and and I like the artwork. It's nice and sturdy with thick pages so hopefully the younger one won't be able to destroy it (she loves destroying things). It got here before the delivery date which was great and the price was too good to pass up! If they like the story I'll be back for more!
Doesn't Get Better Than Boynton!
We absolutely LOVE Sandra Boynton books and this one is no exception! Bright, colorful, funny, and entertaining! Our little one picks this one out of all of the others on the shelf. Sturdy board book holds up to drops, bends, bites, and drool very well! A must read for the little ones!
Great Short Story
This book is very cute. I have a 4 year old son that likes it a lot. It takes about 3/4 minutes to read, which makes for a great quick bedtime story. Its good quality standard hardcover children's book. Its great for little ones because it has sturdy thick pages. This is a great addition to my sons library. It also has a lot of reparative words which is great for a child that is learning to read. I would say the age for this story would be best for 0-5.
Classic Boynton, a real favorite with my grandson
This is classic Sandra Boynton. Humor and engaging story for children of all ages delivered in memorable rhyme. My 2 year old grandson quotes lines from her books all the time and we giggle together over the funny stories and pictures.
Bedtime favorite
I actually need to order this book again because the second child loves it soooo much it has literally gone to pieces. My 3 year old can recite it from memory and loves it too, but my 1.5 year old loves it. LOVES IT. He carries it with him everywhere. I have glued it back together 3 times. He wants to read it Always. It is his Favorite book. And if I'm going to be reading a book 20 times a day, this one's pretty cute.
Great book
If you like But Not the Armadillo, you will like this book. It’s the story of the happy hippo that dashes by in the armadillo book!
A classic
Always a classic favorite. My son loved this book when he was little so now I’ve bought a copy for his child. Love the story !
Cute story
This is one of my absolute favorite books from my favorite young-children's author. It's a cute, fun story with nice rhyming and with a variety of animals that don't often show up in children's books.

Wonderful book. Well received as a baby shower ("Stock the Bookshelf") gift with another Sandra Boynton book (Moo, Baa, La La La!). My own 3 kids love both of these.
Inclusivity lesson for young children
Boynton books are the best! This is especially sweet and introduces children gently to the idea of inclusivity
The best of the best children's author
I started buying Boynton book for my daughter (now a teen) when she was a toddler. We read Dinos to Go almost every night back in the day and I have saved all these timeless books for my grandchildren to read someday. I still add to the collection and we occasionally sit down and read through them with her as we laugh and reminisce.
Cute book; kids love it.
All of my kids have loved this book. It rhymes and has a cute concept that kids like.
RAD!!
Some books and movies, as a parent, you never-ever-ever grow tired of sharing with your children. 'But Not The Hippopotamus' is for sure one of those books for me. Each of my three children (now all teenagers) have their own copy stored up in their keepsake boxes, and one day I will share Boynton with my grandbabes. We love this book so much that we can still quote it to one another, and every time I attend a baby shower, I make sure that I include this book as part of the gift for baby and parents-to-be. So, so very charming, and such a great message!
Love these chunky board books
Sandra Boynton writes the most adorable toddler story books. I bought them when my kids were young, and I still include a set in all my baby shower gifts.
cute fun book
I buy books for the grandkids. This is one I get for someone in each family. Love it.
One of the best kids' books ever!
One of my favorite children's books of all time. I give it to all the babies with a couple of Sandra Boynton's other books: The Going to Bed Book and Moo Baa La La La. Kids love the catchy, simple, rhythmic rhymes and the pictures are so funny.
Cute but expensive
Enjoy Boynton books but they can be expensive. I wish they were more affordable.
Short but really nice
I like the illustrations from this author, plus her rhymes are always pretty nice. It's short and easy to read over and over.
Poor Hippopotamus!
Everybody is having fun...but not the Hippopotamus! Lol Cute story and rhymes well.
Durable and cute
We love Sandra Boynton's book! Durable board books and very cute.
Super fun book
I love this book. I read it to my kids 25 years ago and now they are reading it to their children. It’s so sweet to see a babies face smile at the pictures and they just love the story.
One of my favorites
I never give 5 stars unless it exceeds my expectations. Love this book.
Highly recommended
Adorable book, love anything by Boynton. Keeps my 16 month grandson ‘s attention and fun to read to him.
Cute book!
This book is very simple and easy to read, It's short so it keeps a toddler's attention. This one is actually kinda funny, even as an adult I got a giggle out of it. I would definitely recommend this to a young reader, or anyone learning to read. The book itself is made of a hard cardboard & seems to be in a good shape still.
Great Book!
Very cute book! My 1 year old nephew enjoys all of the Sandra Boyton books. The illustrations are fun and creative!
Nice toddler book
Wonderful story, happy ending and the book quality is great.
All Time Favorite
My granddaughter loves this book, as did my children. Sandra Boynton is a great author with a sense of humor, good for adults reading the book and for the kids being read to!
A favorite!
My daughter LOVED this book and wanted to read and reread it. Loved saying” But not the hippopotamus.” along with the pages. Fun book.
Boyton books are the best!
Cute book for parents of little ones or early intervention/preschool teachers. Repetitive text and silliness makes it a hit with the 0-3 year old crowd.
Cute
We love Sandra Boynton books. They are silly and playful. They keep my toddler interested. Get But Not The Armadillo also.

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old grand daughter. She loves it. The pages are very colorful. It is very well made and should last for a long time.
Love this writer!
Sandra Boynton is a gifted writer of children's literature. The text is simple without being insipid; quickly memorizable by a young child so that they can 'read along' with you, and not so long that they overwhelm their attention span. My grandkids love animals of all kinds, so the illustrations are always a hit as well.
Great buy. One of my favorites
This is by far Boynton's best book. I actually love reading it and I've memorized it to recite when we're in the car and the little one is crying. The bright, simple pictures keep my baby interested, and the rhymes are cute and clever.
Classic Sandra Boynton (Pair with But not the Armadillo)
Great book for toddlers learning to read. I consider this story a companion to her other book "But not the Armadillo" and they can be read together if your child has an interest in either one.
It's okay
I had high hopes for this one, but it wasn't as engaging as I'd hope. My son definitely likes his "Dinosaur Dance" or "Pajama Time" better. This books starts out really cute, but then gets kind of drawn out toward the end and not as rhymey.
Exclusive narrative
Cute artwork but I really didn’t like how the story was so exclusive to the hippo. Even at the end of the book all the animals are still leaving out someone and that’s not a narrative I want to be teaching my child.
We love Sandra Boynton and this book is no different!
Sandra Boynton books are so great - my son loves them and wants me to read them over and over. This book is one of the best ones, it has a rhyming rhythm to it that makes it fun to hear and more fun to read. Its also a cute story of someone feeling left out only to be invited in, which is sweet. The illustrations are adorable - Boynton books always have such friendly little animals with great faces. I am about to go read this to my son for the zillionth time :-)
Childhood favorite
Book arrived in mint condition. I love Sandras work, this was a childhood favorite and made for a great baby shower gift.
But Not The Hippopotamus
Sandra Boynton writes the cutest, most charming books for children. I absolutely love them. They are cute, have excellent flow, and contain an amusing quirky quality that I appreciate. My kids love hearing them. I love reading them. The pictures are cute. In this story, the Hippopotamus is frequently left out. All the other animals do their thing, but not the Hippopotamus. Of course, the ending is adorably heart-warming.

My kids loved this book so much that I bought it for my niece and nephews. We love Sandra Boynton books!
Excellent
Great seller! As advertised. A+
Cute book
Cute book for the little ones
Not so great
All pages were intact, but it looked like the book had been chewed on; and some noticeable wear and tear. Definitely wasn’t what I was expecting when I ordered an “acceptable” version instead of a brand new one, with less than a dollar difference in price.
Boynton is the best!
We are huge Boynton fans, but this one is one of our all-time favorites! Just gave it as a shower gift, too!
Awesome book
Great book! My kids grew up on it. This was a baby shower gift!
Silliness
Rhyming frolicking fun with cute illustrations-purchased for the grandkids but sharing with my preschoolers, but not my middle schoolers.
A favorite!
This book absolutely slays both my daughters. From about 16 months old, they would sit and listen patiently, just waiting for the last line, which sent them into hysterics. All along the way, the sing-songy rhyming, repetition, and funny imagery keeps their interest and puts a smile on their faces, but the end -- I have no idea why they think it's so funny, but I'm just a lame old adult. :) Anything by Sandra Boyton is a safe bet, but this one is one of our favorites ever.
Fun book!
Absolutely love Sandra Boynton books!
Another great Sandra Boyton book
My grandkids and their grandmother loved these books purchased as a baby shower gift
Cute book
Cute book
... exactly what I want--was buying it for another grandchild--love love love this book
Knew exactly what I want--was buying it for another grandchild--love love love this book! One of my oldest grandson's favorite books when he was little and he would bring it to the computer when we Skyped and ask me to read it to him. I have that book memorized.....YES! The Hippopotamus!
Love this story!
We've got this and the Going to Bed Book and read both frequently to my nine-month old son. The text is long and rhymes enough to keep his interest, but the book isn't too long that he loses that interest. I enjoy reading it; the story is really cute. Also, when he's older it will be a good lesson in including others who may be a little different from you. I feel bad for the armadillo at the end! :)
The best children’s book
I was so excited to find and order this book! It was my daughters favorite and i can’t wait to give to my best friend who is having a baby
Love Sandra Boynton
I have always loved the Sandra Boynton collection for children 2 years old and under. They are great to begin reading to them as early as infants. This one and the "Going to Bed Book" are my favorites, but there are many other great ones. They are sturdy board books and will withstand most wear and tear, however the older kids could probably tear them up if left unsupervised.
One of my favorites bun sandra Boynton
Another win for Sandra Boynton :) such a cute book. My daughter loves it!
A classic.
A classic, Loved it for my kids, Now for my Grandchild. Someone might not like this book, BUT NOT THE HIPPOPOTAMUS!!!
Love every single Boynton book
Love every single Boynton book; my grandson has 10 at least by now (he's only 2-1/2) and they are often requested!!!
Wonderful author, wonderful illustrations, wonderful story lines..
Sandra Boynton's books are timeless. I purchased these for my only children a LONG time ago, and have purchased them as gifts ever since. Never disappointing, engaging to children for a long time - often becoming the "favorites", and the artwork is always fantastic.
A favorite
Adorable book!! One of my LO favorites we read over and over and over again!!
Yes yes yes
Great lesson to not leave anybody out or behind. Easy to read and follow, great illustrations, and good word choices to expand vocabulary.
joy and more
This story helps your little one to feel a lot of different feelings and learn to have empathy for others and what they might be going through. There's sadness, reluctance, joy and more. When my daughter was between one and two years old, this was her favorite book and she'd want us to read it over and over.
Not the typical kids book
This is a sweet book that does not incorporate the typical children’s book components of all happiness and excitement. Rather, it thoughtfully portrays the hippo who is anxious about joining her friends, and even when she finally does then the armadillo doesn’t join either.
Cute and enjoyable
Always love her books, and the kids enjoy them as well. I will always recommend her books. Each one is cute and unique.
Cute
So cute.
The whole family loves these books!
My daughter loves all of the Sandra Boynton books. We checked this out at the library and loved it so much we had to buy it for our own enormous book collection.
Five Stars
A children's classic. Purchased for my 1.5 yr. old nephew; he love's the book and the pictures.
Used ?
Are these used? Product in terrible condition. Been chewed on
Promised kept!!!
Love these Books! Thank you for getting it here when you promised!!!
Baby picks it out ALL the time
Oh my god his go to book
This is a good book to begin talks about being left out
This is a good book to begin talks about being left out. What is feels like and how to make sure to include others.
Book worm
Daughter loves it
Love this author and her toddler books!
We are Boynton fans because our granddaughter loves them. Since she was six months old she has loved books, and we love that she does. We have quite a few of the Boynton collection and plan on getting more.
Good cadence
One of the better Bonton books
She loved it and so did I
I ordered this for a Christmas present for my 3-year-old granddaughter. She loved it and so did I!
Fun book for toddlers
One of my grandson's favorite first books. Asks me to read it to him repeatedly. We love Sandra Boynton books!
Great for 1 year old!
My 1 year old loves this! It's one if his favorite books.
Good book
Sandra Boynton books are favorites in our house. We have a lot. This one is one of my daughters favorites.
Irony and the warm fuzzies can't go wrong.
Simple rhymes depict a big coming of age Hippo story. While all the other animals are expressing themselves in various ways and joining in on activities, a shy Hippo weighs on in the background, yearning to be included. The hippo finds her happy ending by accepting the animal pack's invitation to join them by the end of the book; However, a poor Armadillo takes her place in the background. Like many infant books, this hard paged edition stands up to grabby little hands and exploring mouths.

Another funny, quirky book by Sandra Boynton! But not the Hippopotamus once again delivers a fun message to children. Love the simple words and fun pictures. My little one absolutely adores this book. Get it!

Good quality
My 19 mth old loves the pictures . Well made. Feels durable.
Not my favorite.
Didn't love this book for my baby! Not compelling and just kind of boring.
Very good...
Love these books. Very easy for my son to use/read. Can't wait for the armadillo book next! Also bought at a good price.
We love Sandra Boynton books but unfortunately
We love Sandra Boynton books but unfortunately, this was not one that we liked. Although it's got the same cute drawings, catchy rhymes, etc, the message at the end is frankly kind of sad.
Great book
My kids love anything by Sandra Boynton.
Five Stars
Sandra Boynton is a must for anyone reading to their toddlers.
For small children and great price. Easy for little ones to stay attentive
Cute book for reading to babies and toddlers. Nice price.
You can't go wrong with a Boynton book
We have several Sandra Boynton books, but this one is my favorite. The hippopotamus eventually overcomes her fear and shyness to have fun with her friends, which teaches a great lesson about trying new things. The cute rhyme and funny story always make my daughter and I laugh, and because it is a sturdy board book, it has held up very well to my toddler's handling.
I love all Boynyon books but this one is probably mediocre
I love all Boynyon books but this one is probably mediocre. My toddler gets bored with the ongoing repetition and doesn't quite understand the point of the story with the hippo always being left out. Maybe it would be more fun for older toddlers.
Five Stars
Love all Sandra Boyton books! Hoping to get them all for my girls!

All time favorite book by a favorite author.
Best book ever!
This was my favorite book to read my kids when they were little. It's cute, funny, creative and smart. Just bought it again for a friend's kid.
Classic, must have board book!
I read LOTS of books to my kids when they were young and this is one of their favorites! So sweet and a wee bit sad (we would end every page with an "awwwww")
Typical Boynton humor
Boynton's humor is hilarious. And the hippo is our family animal.
Home Library Books for Pre-K children
Retired Kinder and Pre-K teacher. I bought this book as a gift for a dear little one.
She is my grandson's favorite auther. He loves everyone of her books
She is my grandson's favorite auther. He loves everyone of her books. He can quote the entire "Happy Hippo" book
Fun to read
I've long loved this book. Simple, funny, endearing, great for babies or toddlers.
Another Winner From Boynton
Another Winner from Boynton Sandra Boynton writes great kids' books (no mean feat when you see some of what's out there). This is another example of her wonderful writing and illustration. Her pictures have a unique style, warm and familiar and interesting, and she writes with attention to rhythm and a sense of humor. She has written several other excellent books, one such favorite is "The Going to Bed Book," also available from Amazon.
Love Love Love all Sandra Boynton books
Love Love Love all Sandra Boynton books, especially the board books. This is one of my grandson's favorites, highly recommend!
Love hippos
Easy to read to toddlers. My great grandsons know I love hippos, so this was perfect.

My niece absolutely loves this book!
So fun.
Makes grandboy happy.
Cute book
as are all Boynton's books. This one has a sweet message about inclusion and self-esteem, but I don't know that it's the whole story--Boynton's books are meant to be funny, and this one certainly is. Our son likes them, and apparently they're pretty tasty, too.
it would be a good book for a shy kid to learn on how ...
Not as interesting as the other Sandra Boynton’s. But, it would be a good book for a shy kid to learn on how to open up himself/herself.
Boynton is Great!
Boynton is a favorite author at our house. We have a toddle who loves her books. Through talking/reading it with her this book has helped her learn how to join in with others who are playing instead of just watching. It has also helped her learn to ask others to join her in play.
Five Stars
Very cute and short
Boynton books are the best!
My girls loved this book. They are now basically grown (15, 17, 20), but we still say "but not the hippopotamus" every now and then in certain scenarios... I give it as a baby gift now. It's one that people typically don't have, but they report that the kids really like the pictures and the cadence of the text.
Favorite Boynton book
One of my favorite Boynton books! Love it!
One of the best!
I bought this for a friend who just had her first child. It became one of my favorite children's books when my children were past mom reading to them. I love the rhyme and adore the drawings. Sandra Boynton is priceless.

Sandra Boynton, you've done it again!!!
Another of our grandsons favorite stories to be read to them at bedtime. Can't wait till they can read it to me!
Adorable book for a little girlfriend of mine who loves hippos
This is a really cute book as all books by Sandra Boynton are. Gave it to the little six year old daughter of a friend of mine and she loved it!! She is really into hippos and I have not seen all that many things related to hippos so I was happy to find this!
Great book
Great little book for toddlers.
Three Stars
Sweet story, though it would be a larger book and longer story.
Cute!!
Such a cute book with humor for the parents (on the last page). Baby loves it. It has good rythem, and it's short enough that he sits through most of it (he's 11 months old).
A favorite
This is a wonderful book and teaches kindness and feelings

Love this one!
I like it, my son - not so much
I like the book, I think it's cute and I like that it uses animals that aren't always found in childrens books. My son is 16 months old and this book doesn't seem to hold his attention as well at other Boynton books have. I think it'd probably be better for a 3 year old, who would get the story a bit better.

Wonderful!

Love Sandra Boynton books! Have used them in the classroom for toddlers and preschoolers, with the children I have nannied, and now for my own little one! Came quickly and is brand new.
Boynton will make you giggle along with your little one!
Silly and adorable! We love whimsey in my family. Very practical for toddlers with it being a board book. Always love Boynton's illustrations and humor!

My grandchildren LOVE Sandra Boynton books
My grandchildren LOVE Sandra Boynton books! We also like to look at the book and read along with different people who are reading her various children's books on Youtube. Fun!!
Love this
You can just picture the kids joining in to say "But not the hippopotamus" each time you come to that sentence in the book. This is really an adorable book with the ending sentence being "But not the armadillo" which lets the kids use yet another interesting sounding "big" word.
Four Stars
good book for my grandson
Boynton is a toddler's best friend
Can't go wrong with a Boynton book - great rhymes, excellent art work, and my granddaughter loves it.
Nice
Great book but I like “Not the Aramidllo” but the same author better.
Funny and engaging
We love this book in our household! My 27 months old son always laughs when we get to the part, "not the hippopotamus." And he also likes to say "not the armadillo" at the end. We also looked at pictures of armadillos on the Internet together. Great book!!
Fun
It's a fun book to read to young ones.
Funny story for any age
Fun story. My granddaughter’s favorite author
Five Stars
Classic book.
I love this book!
This book is so funny! I love it more than my 3 year old!
A fun and entertaining book
My son lov d this book. We've bought many more as gifts for friends with kids or pregnant.
Best chunky book
Fabulous book. How could you not love a story that begins, "A hog and a frog cavort in the bog."? I buy this as part of a baby shower gift as it was my son's favorite chunky book when he was small...many years ago.
Another great Sandra Boynton book
Another great Sandra Boynton book. This one makes me laugh more than some of the others. It is a cute quick read that is perfect for my 4 month old.
BOYNTON BOOKS ARE GREAT...
I CAN NOT SAY HOW MANY SANDRA BOYNTON BOOKS I HAVE READ TO LITTLE ONES. THEY MAKE GREAT BABY GIFTS....
Great Boynton book!
I love Sandra Boynton's books - or at least almost all of them. Some are absolute classics, like "Pajama Time", and a small few miss the mark, "Snuggle Puppy". But this is one of my favorites; very sweet and funny, and my kids laugh along with the book. I highly recommend.
Love!
My son is a huge fan of Sandra Boynton books. Great for bedtime since they are short and sweet!

Great book. We love Sandra Boynton!
Always recommend boynton books
Sandra Boynton books are always a crowd pleaser! Great little book/gift
Love her books
We have several of her children's books and my daughter, 3, and I both love them. They are funny to read, perfect for bed time stories, and a good sturdy qualtiy for when she looks at the pictures after. I will buy these as gifts for friends and family.
Four Stars
This is a fun and different kids book, but the cadence of reading is a little off for me.
Sandra Boynton is great!
We love the Sandra Boynton books... my little girl has always enjoyed the endearing animal characters and the cute little rhymes are fun to read out loud. She likes to interject the repeated words at the end of the sentences. She's three now and still likes these as bedtime books.
Five Stars
Awesome wee book. Engaging and well written.
Great children’s book
My students love this.
But "Yes" for hilarity
Sandra Boynton's clever, whimsical treatise of one animal (or is there only one...?) whose name just doesn't rhyme with anything.
Another wonderful character by Boynton!
Once again Boynton delivers a quirky, endearing children's book. The grandbaby pulls this one out for us to read again and again.
Cute
cute book that I bought for my nieces.
I love Sandra Boynton books but this one was disappointing
I love Sandra Boynton books but this one was disappointing. It doesn't really flow like her others when you read it aloud, and the message is pretty depressing. Just as the hippo finally get included the book ends with the poor armadillo left out.
Fun and silly board book for babies and toddlers
One of my favorite Boynton board books. This dilly little book tells the tail if how the other animals leave the poor hippo out if their fun - spoiler - until the end. Fun rhymes and cute puctures this is a classic.
adorable
super cute book!

A fun book to grow into
Bought for my 20 month old grandson. A fun book to grow into!
Great book by a great childrens author
One of our favorite books and authors, my girls really loved them when they were younger and even though one is five now she sometimes grabs it and likes to read it to her sister and I from memory and they always laugh.
