Pass on this one

Bought this because we love the Going to Bed book by Sandra Boynton. Really disliked that U is for Ugly Birds being ugly. Its not funny or silly, just mean. So we are not keeping this one.

Cute

It's a cute book that goes through the alphabet with different animals. There were a couple letters that I thought were ridiculous and didn't make sense, but the rest are sweet, some are funny. The book is small enough for my toddler to hold and turn the pages. Durable for how rough she can be on her toys, too. It will be great for when she starts to learn the alphabet. It's a nice way to start getting her familiar with their shapes and sounds.

Crowded

If you are looking to use this book to teach ABC's I'd keep looking. There are three letters to a page and it's distracting.

Cute, simple book!

My son is 8 months and seems to prefer books with sentences that rhyme but I’m sure he will like this book in the future as he begins to recognize the animals. Very cute!

Cute illustrations

This is a good sturdy board book with cute illustrations. I love Sandra Boynton’s books and have replaced many of the ones I had for my kids with new ones for my grandchildren.

Quick read

Cute quick read at night. Not a favorite for my kids by far but its not a bad book. Its a nice ABC book.

ok.

not fond of this book. the terms/items/animals used are strange and uncommon. I also dislike u for uglier as others have noted.

Love these ABCs

I love Sandra Boynton’s books and this one is going to be fun to teach our son the alphabet.

Love this author!

Super cute book. We LOVE the 'Doggies' book so we got more of this author. Small for little hands but sturdy.

A fun introduction to the alphabet

Love this book! Grew up on these and love reading them to my son. Some parts really made me chuckle "I - Iguanas Iching," "U - Ugly birds being Ugly." A fun introduction to the alphabet.

I love the alliteration

My son loves everything by Boynton. I love the alliteration. So many alphabet teaching tools use such lame sentences. This is great.

ABC Book

First granddaughter loved hers, now new one for second granddaughter

Grandson is totally into this book!

My Grandson loves this book....he's 3.5 yrs old...

Fun alphabet book

We love all our Sandra Boynton books! This one was not a story or rhyme but has animals and actions with illustration for each letter.

Cute, Fun Book

This book is very cute. We have lots of Sandra Boynton books, and while this one is not my daughter's (19 months) favorite, it still has a lot going for it. It's a good buy, especially for the price.

Great Book!

Very cute book! My 1 year old nephew enjoys all of the Sandra Boyton books. The illustrations are fun and creative!

Great book for a child under 5

I bought this book for my kids and they seem to love it!

.

good quality cute book

Great purchase

Love all her books

Not her favorite

My daughter loves sandra boynton books... except this one. I cant make it past the 2nd page it loses her attention.

fun

fun book

You should definitely buy this book. I mean, DEFINITELY!!!

Do you love Sandra Boynton as much as I do? I think this woman has the greatest sense of humor. Her animals are wonderfully drawn, and her sayings are clever. I have a cup with a Sandra Boynton critter on it, and the words under the picture say "I love your fuzzy little heart." Now, don't you have to love an artist with that kind of humor? AND I love my little mug, too.

Cute!

Cute!

Three Stars

Some of the words are hard for younger kids. Could've used easier words

Two Stars

The book is great.... but our book came with the pages already coming apart.

Good learning book

My babe loves this book because its easy for her to learn from it

Perfect for 1 year old attention span!

This is my favorite author!!! My one year old loves these books. I am trying to collect every book of hers! Love love!!!

Sandra Boynton books makes learning fun!

Your little one will enjoy this Sandra Boyton book. Having exposure to the alphabet, letter Recognition and their sounds while having fun is always a good thing. My sons started to read before starting school.

Funny for kids AND adults

A to Z is my favorite alphabet book that I've found so far! It seems that so many alphabet books are boring, and since my daughter wants to read books all the time I needed one that I wouldn't mind reading. While some think that the "Ugly birds being Ugly" is offensive/lame/not appropriate, I think it makes the book for me! I don't want another alphabet book that has "umbrella" for the letter "u". I want a book that is more unique and funny. I used it as an opportunity to teach my daughter that just because something may be ugly doesn't mean it's bad. Thank you, Sandra Boynton for another funny book!

Absolutely wonderful

You can't beat Sandra Boynton's books for children! They are active, fun and just very enjoyable for the reading to babies to toddlers.

Whimsical fun

My daughter loved all of Sandra Boynton's books when she was young. The adults who read to her, especially her grandparents, loved the whimsical stories and delightful drawings. Now, whenever a friend has a child, or grandchild, a set of Boynton's books are my standard gift. No one is ever disappointed!

GREAT CHILDREN'S BOOK AND VERY EDUCATIONAL

Good book

Very cute book. My baby loves it

Maybe when he's older

My son is only 3 months old but he loves being read to. But this one has smaller pictures and doesnt flow quite like the other Boynton books. I think this one will be put away for when he's a little older, because the content is more than a 3 month old will be interested in.

Cannot go wrong with anything Sandra Boynton

Humorous, cute, and classic Boyton style. A fun way to bond with your kids and introduce the alphabet. We have several alphabet books and this is by far my favorite!

Five Stars

We love Sandra Boynton books.

Cute book!

Cute book for young children and great service!!

Five Stars

a fun book with very good alphabet pictures for little ones.

Great alphabet book!

We have a couple different alphabet books and this is my favorite. There are simple 2-line statements (A-aardvark admiring, B-beavers ballooning) for each letter accompanied by a cute Boynton illustration. Occasionally she's thrown in a funny one (U-uglybirds being ugly). There are 2 letters per page. It has a soothing rhythm when you read it. Love :)

Alphabets are good. Graphics not so much!

The book is of nice quality. But the pictures are too goofy and the words are complicated for my toddler to understand. So I just teach her the alphabets without going into details.

great condition, and excited to complete a set

As expected, great condition, and excited to complete a set.

One of my baby's favorites.

I love how easy it is to read it in a way that there will be a rythm and my daughter enjoys it. I just get stumped when I get to U because of the extra word "being"

Fun Bookd

You can never go wrong with Sarah Boyington books.

Great Book

Entertaining for young children, with good pictures. Makes silly rhymes that keep kids interested, and helps them learn the alphabet.

Not enough words but cute!

I love Sandra Boynton but this book is just ok. I wish it had more words, like the Dr.Suess ABC book. I'd go with that one instead. This book just isn't very readable.

The usual wonderful Boynton

All her books are fantastic. Our two-year old daughter asks for them again and again. And this one has really helped her learn her ABC's.

Love all things Boynton

You can't go wrong with Sandra Boynton books. This one doesn't disappoint.

Easy for the little hands to carry!

Great for little one's tiny hands and will be a great teaching book for the alphabet.

brilliant

The animals are visually engaging for children and funny for adults. The key to making a habit of reading with your children is finding books that they enjoy and you can tolerate. This is not only fun for kids but for their parents as well. Hurrah Sandra Boynton.

The solid cardboard pages are excellent for my 20 month old granddaughter, who loves to turn the page! Excellent colors!

Five Stars

One of DDs favorite books! We love Sandra Boynton!

Okay Book

A to Z is not my favorite Sandra Boynton book. It's got cute illustrations like all her other books, but overall it's not that great. Every letter is represented by an animal & a verb (i.e. 'elephants eating' 'iguanas itching', except for the letter 'u'. My problem isn't necessarily that she uses the phrase 'ugly birds being ugly', but that there is more to that letter than all the other letters. This makes the book flow poorly in my opinion. It's not a bad book, but I'm guessing there are better alphabet books out there.

Cute

Bought this as a baby shower gift, she seemed to like it

Five Stars

Daughter loves it!

A good read

Love all her books- we have quite a few. A quick easy read perfect for short attention spans.

Enrich your vocabulary

This sturdy book has adorable illustrations and is full of words not typically found in an ABC book.

but not my favorite Sandra Boynton book

Cute, but not my favorite Sandra Boynton book.

Adorable Alphabet Book

My 2 year old loves all of Sandra Boynton's books so far. They are so cute, makes reading fun while rhyming, and tosses in a bit of humor too. Great!!

Sandra Boynton is the best.

All of her books are great for kids and big kids alike to read! She makes learning for tots very fun.

Always a classic!

Great book! My little girl loves it. We read it to her every night. She loves the pictures and enjoys slapping her hands against the book (she is 6 months old). It is always a treat to get to read to your daughter. She definitely enjoys the pictures of all the animals!

Great

Got this for my Granddaughter. And she loves it.

Excelent book

This book is great. My 1 year old daughter loves it. It's a great idea to make books that are tough to resist kids' play time.

Great book

Funny and educational. I love this book and my two year old loves it as well. He reads it every night and loves to repeat the rhymes!

Five Stars

My son loves books. He really likes the colors, pictures and big letters in this one.

A to Z Book

Adorable book for young children. Teaches the alphabet in an educational, fun manner using a lot of age appropriate pictures. My 3 year old loves this book just has her older brother did when he was her age.

Silly, simple ABC book

We have five other Sandra Boynton books that are read often in our home, but this one is my absolute favorite! There is a large, easy to read depiction of each letter and a couple words that start with the letter (Q= quails quacking). It's very funny and both my kids love it!

Five Stars

Cute book!

Great book

Great for toddlers.

Not what I expected

Not worth the price! I purchased this book as a learning tool to help my two-year-old grandson learn to read and relate the letters of the alphabet to the objects however the letters are not very clear and some are even partially covered by the pictures and the book itself is on the small side, even for him.

Good book...

Good illustrations, my 2 year old daughter enjoys it. If somehow, you are offended by the letter "U" representing "uglybird" then don't buy it, never leave your house with your child, and don't ever turn on your TV. Ever. Just sit there and sing to them until they are 50.

Still a favourite after 25 years

I recently bought this gem for a friend who wanted to start her baby's library from friends' favourites. I brought my two children up on making noises to go with the letters and illustrations (as much as I could!) and it really stuck with them at a very early age.

A to z

A wonderful alphabet book for babies and toddlers, amusingly written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton!

Toddler's Choice

I prefer other Boynton books, but this is the one my daughter requests the most. Hard to argue with a toddler who wants to hear more about the alphabet!

Much better than dr seuss

2 words for each letter involving animals. Much more engaging to my 18 month olds than the long dr Seuss sentences. Doesn't do lower case though.

5 Stars

Great children's book for learning the alphabet.

Cute book.

My 1 y/o loves to listen to this fun versions of the ABCs.

Book is completely stained

I received this book and it had yellow stains on the cover and all throughout the book. I would not want this book if someone gave it to me for free! And the sellers notes said the condition was "good". I am very disappointed.

Book

The book itself is good - just came in a pretty beat up condition - should have opted for NEW

U is for “UGLYBIRDS being UGLY...”

Pretty good learning book but there’s one thing I would definitely change: U is for “UGLYBIRDS being UGLY.” There are so many other verbs they could have used— unlocking, upset, underlining, using an umbrella... I should write a book!

BEST Alphabet book, EVER!

BEST Alphabet book, EVER! CLASSIC Boynton whimsy making the most memorable mnemonics <3 A must-have for the perfect teachers' toddler toolkit.

Unusual, amusing alphabet

When so many alphabet books rely on A is for apple, B is for ball, etc., this one is a refreshing change of pace. We love Boynton books in our house for their delightful quirkiness, and this alphabet is no exception. Each letter is represented by an animal doing an alliterative verb-- my personal favorite is "vicuña violining" (I'm a dorky fan of llamas and their kin). The pictures are simple enough not to be overwhelming but detailed enough to be satisfying to my busy little one, and interesting enough for Mom, too. Great for learning/reinforcing the ABCs and for inciting a few giggles, too. I highly recommend it!

Such Fun!

Every child should own a Sandra Boynton book. Not so much for the writing, although, I certainly wouldn't fault it, but for the illustrations. Her work is instantly recognizable, deceptively simple, and inimitable. Not that I'm especially interested in drawing cartoon characters, but I wish I could say as much for my work. One of her books is an instant pick-me-up, for the adult reading and the child listening, and, of course, looking.

A great book

My 4-month-old daughter LOVES Sandra Boynton books. We have ten of them and they are her favorites. She loves the simple stories and the bright, vibrant pictures. I point to the words and the pictures as we go through them & she giggles almost non-stop. She even tries to help me turn the pages. (Of course, she also has tried to eat the books, but she's only four months old.) There seems to be a lot of discussion regarding the "ugly birds." As an education professional, I think it is important not to under-estimate the intelligence of children. Many will take the phrase at face-value and see it for what it is, a silly statement that sounds funny and "tickles" when you read it.

Echoing the Ugly Problem Too

Although I've enjoyed reading her other books to my daughter, the word UGLY also bothered me. These books are perfect for reading to infants and toddlers, and I'm not too naive or overprotective to know that she won't pick up negative volcabulary (she has already), but it seems that "ugly" is not an appropriate word to teach them at such a young age. I'd prefer to have her learn more positive words, since there is plenty of time for her to learn all the words later. After discovering this page, I haven't used this book again.

Another pefect one

My 3yr old absolutely adores this book!!Its so much fun reading with him and having a book that is teaching him while he's having fun. Its easy and light and does not get him frustrated like other books I've tried to use to get him to learn something. I've learned that Boynton books are a great way to learn and yet still let a child be a child....after all I don't think that at 3 he has to know what college he's going to and what his profession should be....If me reading "U, uglybirds being ugly" makes him giggle, its the best thing in the world!!!

Using "Ugly Birds" Uniquely...

My son enjoys reading this book, and it helped him learn his ABCs pretty quickly. My wife and I were worried initially about the "Ugly Birds Being Ugly" page, because we thought our son would go around poking fun at the physical appearances of others. But he didn't. Looks like we managed to teach him how to respect others. As for Sandra Boynton's book, our 5-year old smiles at the letter "U" page not because of how the birds look, but because of how the phrase sounds (onomatopoeiatically speaking, that is). When I scrunched up my face and asked him if Daddy was being ugly, he said No because I wasn't some bird drawing made by Sandra Boynton. I recommend this book not only for the entertainment value, but for the opportunity to teach children how to draw the line between fun reading, and respecting others. Afterall, I'd rather my child hears the word "ugly" from me (plus parental explanation), than from someone else in the school playground.

Sandra's Books are Great!

Our kids and many other kids I know, love this line of books. They are a great size, durable, and enjoyable for all to read. I have given these books as gifts at almost every baby shower I have ever been to. Pajamma Time and Barnyard Dance are favorites in our house. We can all recite them :)

Love it!

Absolutely perfect alphabet book

Colorful, Vivid Illustrations

I have read this book several times to my six month old daughter. She thinks it is hilarious - although she obviously has NO idea what an aardvark or vicuna is. The illustrations are vivid, colorful and appealing to little eyes.

Love

Love these books! This one is great!

Kind of lame. Just another alphabet book. Nothing special...except for the Xylo.

Kind of lame. Just another alphabet book. Nothing special...except for the Xylo.

Five Stars

Sandra Boynton writes great books for kids. Love them all.

Quick, short book

A very short alphabet book, with each letter illustrated by an adjective-noun pair. The animals get a little weird at the end of the book (xylo xylophoning? Uglybird being ugly?), but that's only to be expected.

Five Stars

Love it

Was disappointed

I thought that The going to bed book was pretty cute so we ordered some sets of books by this author. Well out of the eight books we got the going to bed book was really the only good one and this A to Z was probably the worst. For U she's has ugly birds being ugly, not one of the first U words I want my little one learning.

Teach your children about "ugliness"

A to Z has a big problem in my opinion. It is a very simple children's book with some very cute illustrations of animals (A to Z). Each animal is engaged in an action that also begins with the first letter of it's name (e.g. Kangaroos Kissing). There are lots of made up animals, I'm assuming to account for the rarity of animals beginning with "Q" and "X" etc. The part that I don't like is the fictitious "Uglybirds" whose action is simply "Being Ugly". The illustration that goes along with this so-called ugliness is very disturbing. The "Uglybirds" have atypical bird features that seem intentional. They are green and purple, and have messed up feathers and big bulging eyes and are very "Different" from the "normal" birds in this and other books. Upon reading this, my wife and I agreed that we would never repeat this section while reading to our daughter. Although I do intend on teaching my daughter about ugliness (Racism, Violence, contempt, etc.). I think that it is a quality that shouldn't be used to describe physical appearance. When my daughter encounters a person who is physically unusual, I hope that I have instilled in her the values to disregard what others might find "Ugly". I know that some might think that I'm overanalyzing such an innocent entry in a child's book, I think that parents need to be more careful about the messages that they are sending about ugliness.

My son loves Sandra Boynton Books

This is a great book which my son loves to read. It teaches him his ABC's plus the pictures are great. We have almost all of Sandra Boynton's book collection. Highly recommend it.

Ugly does not belong in a baby book

I agree with the one star reviewer who criticized "uglybirds being ugly". Making fun of the outer appearance of others is something I am not going to model for my daughter. I gave this book two stars because I have been reading it and just skipping over that part, but now that she is older and understanding more, I'm giving it away.

Three Stars

Not my favorite Sandra Boynton book.

rhymes don't capture my kids' attention

my 15mo twin boys are not interested in this book at all. i rated it 3 stars hoping they WILL eventually like this book, but if they don't i'm going to try the dr. seuss one.

Daughter likes it !

Our daughter at age 3 is obsessed with the alphabet and gets a kick out of this book, she loves the pictures and silliness.

Good book

Not one of my favorites, but it still is a good book. We enjoy all of the Sandra Boynton books.

Not recommended. A pretentious book with difficult words and I ...

Not recommended. A pretentious book with difficult words and I am also annoyed by her using "ugly birds being ugly". Some of her books are really nice, but there are few just overrated.

Silly:Good; Stupid: Bad!

Like Moo/Baa/Laa this is another book that attempts to be silly but ends up being stupid! The books messes it up in the very beginning.. "Aardvark Admiring". That is just plain stupid! If you want silly; try "four fluffy feathers on a fiffer-feffer-fef" Sandra is no Dr. Seuss for sure! Even my 14 month old thinks this book is lame! If I start reading this; she brings me the Dr. Seuss ABC. I found one good use of this book! It makes an excellent table leveler

Five Stars

Always a favorite!!

Cute until you get to letter U

My children (ages 2 and 1) absolutely adore Boynton books, such as "Snuggle Puppy" and "The Going to Bed Book". They like this one as well, however, I have a real problem with "uglybirds being ugly" representing the letter U.

Entertaining and educational, thumbs up!

Our son has loved this book ever since we got it for him. He was 14 months when we bought it and now at 17 months it has demonstrated its ability to entertain as well as to educate, he really is learning some of the letters of the alphabet which is a big step for someone so young. He also looks forward to the iguanas itching (a good excuse for a tickle) and the zebra zig-zagging at the end (another tickle!). He enjoys following my finger as I spell each letter. My only wish is that Sandra Boynton had written the letters in lowercase as well as uppercase. Maybe she would consider coming out with a companion book. He is learning so much about capital letters I worry that I don't have an equally entertaining way of teaching him lowercase! We also have another book by the same author,

Boynton Books are Fun

Board books for the youngest kids can be boring. Sandra Boynton's crazy animals are fun for the adults too.
