Horrible just horrible new format

Not much you can say , I have been buying DK travel books for 20 years and they were the best, but now the new format they are using is just plain garbage. Dumbed down information, cheap thin blurry paper, awkward format, they are now just a complete mess , the old format was great clear, crisp, high contrast non fuzzy images, now it is just rubbish. A great one of a kind approach to travel books has now been destroyed. The good star ratings must be for the older version editions of the book, because the one I have has only been out a few weeks

don't like the new version

I'm always a big fan of DK travel guides, but when I received this new version of the Florence travel guide, I'm so disappointed!! I have the old version of the "Italy" travel guide and compare the Florence pages with the new version. the Old version has much much better picture quality, better information, and better editing!! I really hope DK can bring the old versions back or at least have them as an option since the new version is like a lightweight format, and maybe some people prefer that........

Less is not always more.

Once upon a time, DK’s Eye Witness Travel Guides were the best one could get. The company’s decision to eliminate information such as regional weather patterns, or noting which popular cultural sites offered the possibility of reservations to avoid long lines during peak seasons (such as, among others, the Uffizi and the Tomb of the Medici), make this new slimmer guide less useful than previous editions. Savvy travellers might do well to seek an earlier DK edition to Florence & Tuscany.

Good but Not Great

Eyewitness did a decent job this time. I usually get Eyewitness due to the amount of photos in the guides. It gives me ideas for my own photographs. The guide itself as always has a small and bad selection of food recommendations. The rest of the guide itself includes the history and tells you about the main highlights. It never takes you off the beaten trail. For a general idea of the surrounding area and to help start plan your trip, this would be a good guide. If you want something more serious, just search around on the internet. The authors of these guide books most of the time have never visited the sites / country [heard this directly from someone that works in the industry].

Great guidebook

On my second trip to Florence I purchased this book. The maps are great and provides lots of useful information about the surrounding towns in Tuscany. I used it in Siena. Pisa, lucca and Florence. I will look for this brand when traveling to new destinations. I usually buy Rick Steves books but I liked this one much more.

DK Eyewitness Travel guides are the best on the market

So much information laid out easily for users. I have traveled across the globe and for directions, travel ideas, top locations, hotel and food recommendations are summed up in a high quality book. It is like having a city or country National Geographic book to use in traveling.

Make sure you remember it!! Haha

Has some really good info and easy to follow!!! We went on our trip and forgot the book but still came back and got more explanations for what we saw!!!

Can't go wrong with DK.

It helped us with our preplanning of our upcoming trip. We always use DK Eyewitness books. I have a library of European cities and have yet to be disappointed. The maps and the insights are invaluable.

These are my favorite travel books

These are my favorite travel books. I probably like them because they are so very visual, as well as informative. A bit heavy to travel with, but my go to books.

Great travel guide

Great travel guide. Just what I was looking for. Helps me prepare for my upcoming trip to Italy

DK travel guides are great

Love this DK travel series. The book gives a nice picture and short, informative history and description for each site. It is a bit heavy for its size, but worth the inconvenience of carrying it around.

Detailed

These travel guides are fantastic. Love the detail in maps of interior locations.

Perfect travel guide

I use eyewitness guides on every European trip I take and find them very useful. Highly recommended.

Packed with Information

Packed with loads of travel and location information. Must read for travelers to Tuscany.

Just OK

This book was somewhat helpful, but Rick Steves is far better.

Five Stars

Love DK Eyewitness Travel Guides. Always helpful and full of information I didn't even know I wanted.

(Literally) Faded Glory

When did they switch to this cheap, crappy paper? This series used to be a visual delight. Now it looks like a cereal box.

Very complete and beautifully illustrated

Tells you everything you need to know about this area of Italy, along with great photos and helpful tips.

Great guide books

Gave it as a gift. Love these guides. This Florence and Tuscany guide is excerpted from the larger Italy guide book but is so much more convenient to use if one is going only to that region of Italy.

Am excellent tour guide

Presented all the most desirable places to see in Florence. Am excellent tour guide.

this book was certainly the best

Of all the guide books of the area, this book was certainly the best. The information in the book improved our experience in Florence and Tuscany.

Love this Series of travel books

Perfect for taking along on your trip...nice and compact but has all the high points plus more.

History lesson, not travel guide

got this book and was so excited to read it and got quickly disappointed. I was looking for an organized travel book on Tuscany as I am looking into a vacation there and wanted some info on the area. What I got was a detailed history lesson. There was way to much history in this book . I wanted a general travel book. The info on hotels were a small section ( about 4 pages) in the tiniest font. I got a headache just trying to read this. I would not recommed this as a travel book!

Great travel guide

Great travel guide. Just what I was looking for. Helps me prepare for my upcoming trip to Italy

Lots of information

The book was filled with helpful information and guidance for the visit. My only quibble was that it didn't give any tips on ticketing for the larger sites as a way to avoid the really ridiculous lines. This book also covered Tuscany as well as Florence; we'll have to take it with us on our next trip.

Five Stars

Excellent travel guide, state of the art.

DK guides are the only ones you need to take with you.

DK travel books are well organized & full of useful information. It's the only book a traveller needs.

DK books are the best! Lots of pictures!

Love any DK book!! I had one of these when I went to Florence about 22 years ago and loved it and now I got a new one for my son who is there now ! Beautiful photographs and a lot of information. Most of it is correct to which helps. There may have been one phone number or something that was not correct but all the other information is absolutely fabulous!

Very well written and informative.

The book is excellent, very detailed and useful. Unfortunately, being chock full of detail made it very heavy and I began to regret that weight during the trip, which is why I gave it 3 stars. If you want to read it before you go, it can't be beat.

These are beautiful books whether or not one visits Florence

These are beautiful books whether or not one visits Florence, each point is illustrated with a picture, and a picture is still worth a thousand words.

Five Stars

Hope to have a great trip to Italy!

Four Stars

very informative

Five Stars

ok

I like this book

I like this book. The only thing is that it is so heavy. I couldn't take it in a back pack and it might be too heavy to take in a suit case. It's packed with info though.

Great travel guide

Great travel guide. Just what I was looking for. Helps me prepare for my upcoming trip to Italy

great pre-planner but avoid kindle edition.

the format of DK books has changed, they no longer have coated semi-gloss pages with hard to read small thin text, requires bright light, small text, but instead, uncoated environmentally friendly paper with slightly larger, thicker, text due to the absorption of the ink on the paper that is easier to read. the eating, staying, shopping that was in the back has been reduced and it now in each section/area with fewer choices, but you can complement if by using google maps web info or using the respective lonely planet book which is the opposite, heavy on the itinerary details and light on the culture. the. new format is lighter and the map is smaller. they both have their merits and make excellent pre-planning guides. the kindle format I would avoid, it is choppy and does not download completely and most of the time you cannot read it due to a download error if you are not connected to wifi as it never seems to completely download and if you are traveling and only using cell data, you may not be able to reference it, which defeats the purpose of the ultra compact electronic form. I find the dk books great for coffee table reading of where you may want to make your next adventure, so you can get an idea if you want to really use your limited vacation time that we have in the US to go there. kindle or dk needs to let you simply purchase the electronic book as a complete download that you then manually send or place on your device to get the download over with and complete.

This is it !

I just got back from 3 weeks in Florence. This is THE BOOK. You must study it a bit to fully understand the organization but if you are there for ART & ARCHITECTURE this is it., look no further. For the best map, get Fodor's. For food and shops get the Cognoscenti's Guide to Florence.

After 20 years I need to find a new series of travel guides

I've been a big fan of this range of guides for 20 years: often buying a book simply because I'm interested in a destination. I saw that they've undergone a serious makeover and so was interested in the new approach. The book is lighter and has a more modern feel. However, the publisher seems to have used the revamp as an opportunity to axe masses of information. Maybe the use of the internet has made some of the sections in previous guides redundant but DK was such a trusted brand I would value their recommendations over the likes of TripAdvisor. This culling of information includes things such as maps, weather charts and details of typical foods and drinks. Yes, I could probably find all this online but isn't the point of a guide book that you have it all in one place? I think this will be my last DK purchase and next time I'll head to Waterstones (sorry Amazon) to see what their rivals offer.

Strange version of DK guide

Not the usual size and format of DK guide so bit disappointed really. Have used them for years but this was quite different. Have they changed all of them I wonder??

Quality of photos and paper not a patch on earlier editions

If you have used DK Eyewitness Tavel Guides in the past and appreciate the quality of the paper and clarity of photos beware. This new edition is printed on cheap paper hence the photo reproduction is poor. The contents may be up to scratch but that is about it!

A Guide to a Holiday

Very informative book and well laid out with plenty of illustrations of the area in Italy. Ideal for my forthcoming holiday in the summer. Well worth the price.

Might suit some people

I bought this as I was given last year a really good guide to Barcelona by the same company. This wasn't as good, rather dumbed down and more superficial.

The best guide but downgraded paper !

Always love DK guides. I swear by them. Practical pages, descriptions and great little walking tours. New paper not as thick so unlikely to be as durable as previous ones but content still great

Florence guide

Extremely handy guide on my recent trip to Firenze

Ideal for a long weekend.

Great guide as always.

Very useful and comprehensive Guidebook for Florence.

The DK Eyewitness Guides are always excellent and I am in Florence right now enjoying using this Guidebook.

Good information but poor quality book

As expected the information is very good. I am however disappointed with the quality of the paper used it’s not what you expect from DK.

Great travel guides

My favourite brand travel guide, only drawback I found digital version harder to navigate than paper book.

Excellent guide

Excellent guide. Liking the new layout. Had it with us on holiday. Invaluable

still the best guides

Still the best guide, now lighter weight which is good, although seemed to be slightly less comprehensive.

Many more photos than any other guide book I have tried

Lots of photos and diagrams of churches, etc. and I love that about this series of guides. The photos help me decide whether I want to drive an hour to visit a village or abbey, for example. However, it is not really the only guide one would want for Tuscany. Some others, like Rick Steves', have a lot more useful information - but also very few photos. Using both, I felt was ideal for planning my trip. And when this guide did not give me enough info about a town or a cathedral, I could switch to the other one.

Great guide for Florence and Tuscany

Outstanding book with very helpful information on all aspects of interest in Florence and the surrounding area in Tuscany. There are suggestions for short and longer duration visits and a good pull-out map. Also included is a section on important information on travel, currency and an excellent glossary of commonly used words and phrases in Italy.

An excellent guide when visiting Florence

This is a really good travel guide with a lot of tips about where to go and what to visit. However, in some cases it would be great to have further information, especially regarding great museums like the Palazzo Pitti.

Parfait

Je suis fan des guides DK et celui-ci ne fait pas exception: informations détaillées, photos, sites principaux, etc.... Tout ce qu’il faut pour planifier les vacances!

Lighter-weight travel guide

This 2019 version of the Eyewitness Guide to Florence and Tuscany is a much lighter in weight than the old publication. Gone are the thick, glossy pages and now we have matt paper pages and a non-glossy cover. The layout of the Guide is much the same as it was before, but, of course, up-dated. Everything a traveller needs to know is more or less covered. I particularly like the attached, but easily detached should you want to use it independent of the book, pvc coated map. One side is a street map of Florence - really clear, easy to use, on the reverse is an index of streets in Florence; a map of Tuscany; a map of the immediate area around Florence; information on 'getting around Florence' ie bus and tram, taxi, cycle, car, walking and a section on 'getting out of Florence' a handy list of places to visit and airport information. There is also a little list of emergency numbers. Having been something of a fan of these guides, I am so pleased that these new versions are lighter and more traveller-friendly. However, I do urge readers to check on line before planning trips, meals, accommodation because I noted some mistakes in the text. No travel guide is error-free and, in any case, information changes. Highly recommended.

Less weighty in a good way in the newer formt

DK's Eyewitness guides have been my first choice for travel guides ever since they first came out. They combine super content with great pictures and maps, well designed books. The only downside was their weight! In the older editions, they had thick covers and glossy heavy paper making them the guidebooks to keep in your case rather than your handbag, Their new incarnations change that. My original 1994 Florence & Tuscany guide weighed 542g - the new version weighs a slimline 334g, which makes it much less of a brick in your day bag, which is a good thing. The covers are now thinner, the pages fewer gsm too. The gloss finish has gone in favour of matte. The basic content of all the sights is the same, updated of course - but the beginning and the end of the book have changed significantly. Before we get onto the area by area guide, the beginning now has highlights and sample itineraries and more themed spreads: families, relaxation, music lovers etc. The history and architecture are less prominent - although still there. At the end of the book - gone are the directories of hotels and restaurants, but a few recommendations of where to eat or stay have been built into the section pages. There's just a slim 'Need to know' section now at the back. The book is full of glorious photos, which are reproduced in bright saturated colours making everything look wonderful in the Italian sunshine. Let's just hope that Brexit doesn't make an Italian jaunt too awkward for I'm very keen to return to Tuscany soon!

A very comprehensive and well laid out guidebook

Anytime when I go away on holiday, I nearly always find myself purchasing a relevant DK travel guide and this guide book for Florence and Tuscany (which is one of a series) explains why they have obtained the lions share of the travel guide market. It is very comprehensive in the amount of detail which it provides and is laid out in a very easy to follow manner. In summary, the information is set out in three key sections: firstly, there is a high level overview ("discover"), secondly, there is detailed information around the key sights ("experience") and finally, there is some practical information to help you travel around ("need to know"). The first section, entitled "discover," provides a very high level overview of the city, including 12 reasons to love Florence and Tuscany, a regional map which is divided into districts, suggested itineraries for those with limited time in the region and a series of themed attractions which are worth a visit, for those who are interested in landscapes, music, gardens, food & drink etc. The second section provides much more detailed information on the key attractions and is set out on a district by district basis. Within each district (e.g. The Duomo, Santa Croce, Tuscany etc), extensive details are provided on a number of must see attractions, with a more brief overview given in respect of any other attractions which are also worth a visit. Finally, places to eat, shop and stay are also listed in each district. The third and final section, entitled "need to know," provides essential information on things you should consider prior to travelling (e.g.visas & customs, vaccinations, money & payment methods etc), information on the available transport options within the region, along with details on tipping and local customs. A basic phrase guide is also includes, to assist with reasonably basic queries (for those who want to try out the local language). Overall, the guidebook is very comprehensive and it's not difficult to see why they are so popular.

A good travel companion

I'm usually a lonely planet kind of person, but I really like this book. Its chapters are clear and easy to navigate. Different sections for different areas, and interests. Sections with important information and history, which I like. Lovely photos which are making me excited for my trip.

Great to take out and about

Used this on a recent trip to Florence and Tuscany. Was really useful. Not particularly detailed, or good for planning. But really useful to take out with you whilst you are there; a great size, covers the key sights, and up to date. Also a very handy map of Florence at the back. Very useful!
