Spot on for a 6 year old, summer between K & 1st

I think it’s important for my kids to do these workbooks over the summer to keep their skills sharp. I originally bought this one for my daughter who just turned 5 but I’m thinking I’ll use it as a refresher for my newly 7 year old. It’s kind of right down the middle, some pages my 5 yr old can do and some pages that are best for my 7 yr old so honestly it’s spot on for a 6 year old between K & 1st. It will not go to waste between my 2 kiddos though. The book is very easy to navigate, They like the rewards sticker pages. Typically they get so into it that they do more than the one page/per day that I ask of them. I’ve already recommended these books for my nieces & nephews.

Teacher says Thumbs Up!

From a teachers perspective, this is a great review of what students learn through the school year. The pages are very easy to understand and also easy for the students to accomplish Independently. I like how they are organized by week to keep children on track. The work starts off fairly simple but increase difficulty as the weeks progress. I purchased the K-1 version and the 1-2 version and they both are really great. my children love them.

Useful and fun, doesnt bog down summer

Given the loss of a quarter of the school year during Covid, I was nervous about my daughter's transition from Kinder to 1st. We bought this book to work on mid-June, and she is really loving it. Some days she ASKS to do more pages because she loves adding star stickers to the weekly goal sheet! The instructions are clear, the mixture of activities is great, it pairs well with our hands-on lessons around the house. Each page takes no more than 15 minutes, front and back. I feel much better about her readiness for fall semester after using this book, and she has enjoyed the exercises, instead of feeling stifled or bored by them. We will be using this series again.

Great workbook!

Well put together, it has little bit of everything and its colorful, Keeps my child's interest as she learns.

Iffy

Wasn’t hard enough the first few weeks. My kid is a normal kid who went to a normal public school, so she’s not advanced. Just too east for at least the first half. The stuff toward the end was ok, just not enough to last the whole summer.

Loved it

Really helped keep my son on task through the summer. Loved the sticker chart for every week and the certificates. Kids love being rewarded. This was right on grade level. We will continue to buy them for summer use.

Thumbs up! Parent and kid approved!

My kid enjoys doing this. She’s never bored. Books has math and grammar exercises with easy to understand explanation about the concepts. Really good value for money!

1st Grade Teacher Approved!

I love this book!! I am a former first grade teacher and this book is perfect for their age group! I used it for my son and it kept him motivated and learning throughout the summer without being overwhelming. I'm going to order the next level one for next summer!

Great workbook

Great workbook for the summer. My kids have loved working their way through these pages. Some of it seemed a little "young" starting out for them but the way it works through to harder and harder things was perfect.

GREAT

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR WORKSHEETS MY SON IS GOING TO 1ST GRADE AND WE DID IT ALL WITHOUT A PROBLEM GOOD BUY FOR PRACTICE! :)

Great way to keep your kid busy and keep skills up.

Perfect solution to keep your kiddo busy during the summer. It's great to keep what they learned in kindergarten in their brain till they get to 1st grade.

Great for summer days

Great for summer vacation! Gives kiddos something to do during break, and rainy days.

Good product

So far so good! Keeping my almost 1st grader engaged and entertained while helping fill the gaps.

Fantastic summer prep for 1st grade

This is perfectly suited for summer break, prepping for 1st grade. In my experience, this will put them ahead of their class. The activities themselves are thoughtful and terrific. The pages rip out if you want. They are numbered with a calendar, so you can do 2 activities per day (1 sheet, front & back) for 10 weeks. Enough for the summer break. But frankly we do about 5-10 exercises per day (sometimes an entire weeks worth in 1 day), so for us they go fast. The star stickers are great - you get one star every day on the calendar, and little certificates when you complete a week. My only wish is that they would make more more than one book per level, because we are going through it so fast. We've been attending a Waldorf school, which ignores common core, and is very light on traditional academic skills the first few years. So we do a lot of these kinds of workbooks for supplementation at home. Most of them are hit or miss, even the big brands. Both Weekly Reader and Sylvan definitely stand out as some of the better ones. If you're a grandparent, this is a terrific gift to give your grandkids for the summer.

An Excellent Learning Activities for Kids!!

About: Weekly Reader: Summer Express – Between Grades K & 1 is a children’s workbook provided by Scholastic Teaching Resources, an imprint of Scholastic, paperback, 144 pages. It was published on 1/15/17 under a series of Weekly Reader: Summer Express for variety of age groups. This particular workbook is intended for children ages 5 to 6 and grades K to 1. My Experience: I have my 5 year-old son started working on this Weekly Reader: Summer Express for grades between K & 1 starting on 5/13/17 and finished it on 6/4/17. This workbook is an excellent learning tool! I love that my son spends his free time working on this workbook instead of watching too much cartoons because it helps prevents learning loss and prepares him for kindergarten. My son also worked on a workbook for grades PreK & K. We are a big fan of Scholastic picture books and free online printable exercises. I love how this workbook is designed. It makes learning fun, such as the image above, doing math on a rocket ship! How cool is that? This workbook is organized by week, with 10 pages of learning each week. It is designed to have your child work on 2 pages a day and each day, your child will earn 2 stars for the completed lessons. At the end of the week, your child will have completed 5 days of lessons or 10 pages of learning activities and will earn a weekly completion certificate. Each week is separated out by colors so that it’s easy to keep track when the week ends. There are a mixtures of math, reading, writing, phonics, and vocabularies in each week. I love the reading comprehension at the end of each week. The way this workbook is designed is fantastic because it helps practice your child’s learning habit to stay consistent from day to day and help enhance his/her interest in learning. As a parent, I really enjoy sitting down with my son and helping him work through this workbook. My son doesn’t play video games because I rather fill up his sponge minds with facts and learning as much as I can. I love workbooks such as these because it makes learning exciting. Each page is filled with different activities that it feels like they are playing a game. I highly recommend parents to invest on this workbook or similar ones because as the saying goes, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” and kids’ minds are always open and ready to absorb. Scholastic has many workbooks for all ages. It’s learning without feeling like doing the work. Your kids thinks they are playing games when in fact they are actually learning, it makes your part in enhancing their knowledge a lot easier. I want my kid to excel and workbooks like these helps a lot because I work full-time and I just don’t have the expertise and energy to make learning fun for him. Therefore, I highly recommend you to give it a try. Your kids will love you for it! Also, wonderful news I would like to shout out is that my son will be attending magnet school in the fall. This school teaches one level above. He will be in Kindergarten but will be learning first grade level subjects. I strongly believe that these workbooks made a difference in his learning skills and knowledge. I do recommend parents to give your kids these workbooks instead of video games or toys or movies and/or excessive playtime. This workbook has fun activities too and learning can be fun! Pro: fun learning activities, makes learning more like a game than work, illustrations, many areas of learning: vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, math skills, etc, colorful stickers, completion certificate by week and at the end of the book Con: none I rate it 5 stars! ***Disclaimer: Many thanks to Scholastic for providing the opportunity for my son to learn and for me to review. Please be assured that my opinions are honest. xoxo, Jasmine at howusefulitis dot wordpress dot com

Perfect workbook for summer review

Going to be spending a lot of time with my grandson this summer and this book is perfect for us. To work together helping him keep on top of his studies. He is finishing Pre-K this year and his teacher said he is advanced for his age. We will be working on a few pages each week. I really like how colorful each page is and the variety of topics is really great! At first, I thought the book was very basic and too easy for the grade stated until I continued looking through the entire book. The lessons at the beginning are very easy and will get completed very quickly, later in the book, ready comprehension is a key learning goal. My grandson is just getting out of Ore-K and does know how to read sentences yet. But, I will work with him on these pages by reading the story and asking the questions. He loves working on worksheets, he calls them activities and this book is perfect for summer enrichment so he doesn't forget the skills he learned in school. Three months is a long time to be away from his studies, so we will be reviewing with him. These worksheets are perfect for our needs. Better yet, the very beginning of the workbook outlines the skills that are being covered in the lessons. The workbook is broken down into weeks with a chart at the beginning of each week. There are star stickers available to use on the chart to show his progress. There is also a half-page certificate to give the child when they complete each week. This rewards him/her for their progress. There is a large full-page certificate to give the child at the completion of the entire workbook.

Ideal Workbook For Kids With Short Attention Spans

This workbook has a little bit of everything. I like how the weekly lesson plans are mixed up using snippets of math, reading, writing, phonics and vocabulary. We’ve tried targeted workbooks (like just math or just alphabet) but halfway through, our little guy has had enough. Variety keeps his attention much better. Some pages are easier to do than others, but taken as a whole, it’s a comprehensive mix complete with certificates and stickers. I like that Scholastic has chosen to illustrate using colorful real-life photos instead of silly drawings. This is a great book to use during summer month gaps or weeks when year-round school is not in session. Given in small doses each day, Weekly Reader Summer Express remains a fun activity for our child.

This is a great jump-start for a child getting ready for elementary school

I love that the Weekly Reader series is every bit as much fun and educationally functional as I remember it from my own childhood. This Summer Express edition for between grades K&1 focuses largely on numbers and letters but within 10 weeks a child will go from practicing numbers and letters to beginning to understand reading comprehension and money and how to figure out how much each denomination is worth. Despite the recommended grade points were are using this with my nephew to help prep him for Kindergarten as he is already ahead of the Pre-K Summer Express volume, but I would highly recommend them both to help a child either get a jump start on their studies or to keep them entertained while learning in their time off from school, either way Weekly Reader continues to do a great job of coming up with brief but stimulating learning lessons.

Great summer time workbook

This is a great workbook to keep your child engaged during the summer. It's organized thoughtfully with parents and children in mind. It is separated into 10 weekly sections, with 2 new activities per day (5 days to a week). The beginning of each week has a convenient page dedicated to parents called, "Help Your Child Get Ready." It lists the skills your child will be working on that week, and gives activity suggestions that are related to that week's curriculum. A sticker chart is included to keep your child encouraged and motivated, along with award certificates you can fill out. And the star stickers are included in the back of the book.
