Reaching once again into her rich childhood experience, Patricia Polacco tells the memorable story of how her grandma--her Babushka--helped her overcome her fear of thunder when she was a little girl. Ms. Polacco's vivid memories of her grandmother's endearing answer to a child's fear, accompanied by her bright folk-art illustrations, turn a frightening thunderstorm into an adventure and ultimately . . . a celebration!
Whether the first clap of thunder finds you buried under the bedcovers or happily anticipating the coming storm, Thunder Cake is a story that will bring new meaning and possibility to the excitement of a thunderstorm.

This used to be a favorite of my daughter's when she was a child
This used to be a favorite of my daughter's when she was a child. She gave hers away to someone who loved it just as much as she did. She died in 2009. While in the hospital I vitied the library to find a book to read to her. Imagine my surprise when I found "Thunder Cake" on the shelf. The book is about a young child afraid of the thunder storm. Granny bakes enlists the child's help in baking a cake to ease her fears. I read it to my daughtet on her last day and imagined it easing her fears a bit. Recently I decided to purchase the book to have for myself... memories. It was in perfect condition and just what my heart needed. Thank you so much.
... after our (long) walk home left us caught in bad storms on two occasions
My toddler son became very frightened of thunderstorms after our (long) walk home left us caught in bad storms on two occasions. It started to become a major worry of his that it might storm. I found this book and it worked beautifully! I knew the author from her other books and we read the book when it arrived. The pictures are charming and the story sweet and simple. My 3 year old was able to understand it easily. The next time we had a thunderstorm, we rushed to make a cake! He loved to share it with some neighbors and now talks about how wonderful thunder cake is. He still notices storms, but we recently had a major storm while we were running errands and it was no big deal! I'm still amazed how well this worked when coupled with a cooking activity at home!
Thunder Cake
I have a young niece who is a reluctant reader. For a Christmas gift last year, she received a book each month from Librarian Aunt Donna. I chose Caldecott Medal winners. She loved every book I sent to her and really got into them. She want's me to send her more. That reluctant reader is learning the joy of reading and being introduced to some wonderful books. Thunder Cake is a story about a young girl who learns how not to be afraid of thunder when her grandmother takes her around the farm to find the ingrediants to make a cake. A classic.
The next generation
I had read Thunder Cake to my children when they were 7, 9, 10. They loved the story and we actually assembled the ingredients (per the recipe in the back of the book) and made a Thunder Cake. We were so excited we couldn't wait for a thunder storm to come along..but the cake was yummy anyway! That book as long been missing as the 10 year is now 28. Fast forward and my oldest daughter is a mommy now and when gramma asked mom what the baby who will turn one, would like for her birthday....mom says "Gramma, please find Thunder Cake!"
Another fantastic Patricia Polacco book!
Rechenka's Eggs and Babushka's Doll were favorites for story time when my two children were little. Now I read to my two and four year old grandkids over Portal every night at bedtime. My granddaughter asked me for more books like those two. So I ordered Thunder Cake - it is every bit as good as the others. This story, too, has a healthy dose of that Old Country feel and is filled with a grandmother's love and encouragement. Thunder Cake is a new favorite in my family. Patricia Polacco has a real knack for writing books that appeal to kids and adults alike.
Wonderful Story, Gifted Author!
Thunder Cake is the book that introduced me to the world of Patricia Polacco. I had the opportunity to hear this book being read to a group of elementary school age children (3rd - 5th grade). The children paid close attention as the story unfolded. When the book ended, a lively discussion of the story's events took place. The children talked about their experiences dealing with frightening storms. They recalled time spent with beloved grandparents and other important adults in their lives. They really enjoyed Thunder Cake! Ms. Polacco is a gifted story teller and illustrator. Since Thunder Cake, I've read several of Ms. Polacco's children's books. Many of the events in her stories reflect her own life experiences. I recently purchased Thunder Cake from Amazon for my 9 year old niece. She is an avid reader and I know she will enjoy this wonderful book!
Story about a young girl who was afraid of thunder until her Russian grandmother showed her how brave she really is.
Used this book for my summer school class "Cooks with Books, Road Trip USA". I used stories about food from different states and then we made the food as a class. The thunder cake recipe turned out great and the kids were shocked that they liked it with the tomatoes. This represented Michigan as that is where the story took place. I love all of Patricia Polacco's stories because there is always something to learn.
Sweet story
This is a sweet story about a grandma helping a little girl overcome her fear of thunderstorms. It has the recipe for thunder cake at the end of the book, and my kids can't wait for a thunderstorm to try it. (We haven't tried the recipe yet, so I can't comment on whether it's any good)
THUNDER STORMS... time to get out the popcorn.....
Reinforces the importance of investing time in developing creative methods of addressing scary issues little children are faced with....helping them confront, deal with, and put closure on....Turning frowns into smiles...I grew up fearing thunderstorms to the point I would throw up...The adults in my life brushed it off and assured me I would grow out of it.....BUT I didn't...Then I got married and moved to an isolated farm located in a clearing in the woods of very rural Maine. Taking my thunderstorm fear with me...Becoming the mother of .6 little boys, forced me to dig into my pocket of creative treasures and help my children learn to enjoy the beauty, rather than the fear, of THUNDER AND LIGHTENING..by gathering them together under a Grammy quilt, counting..."One monkey, two monkey, three monkey".between lightening strikes and claps of thunder....while munching on chocolate chips and raisins in paper cups, sharing happy time stories... and hugs....I wish I had thought of making a THUNDER CAKE....I especially enjoyed the illustrations...This is a very well written book I look forward to sharing with my GREAT GRANDCHILDREN...and my adult children.....
Wonderful!
Read this years ago, but getting it for grands, re-read. It is a beautiful little story, with lovely illustrations. (Look for the 2 icons in the background - a treat to find!)

Just As Good as I Remember
I remembered this book from my grade school days and thought it was about time to get it for my own childrens' library. It's just as sweet as I recall, and the kids really enjoyed counting with the narrator as the storm moves closer. Bonus recipe in the back of the book, but as I recall it was a bit dry. I'm looking forward to making the Thunder Cake with my kids and seeing how well it turns out!
Hold back that storm!
Good story about a grandmother and her granddaughter as they rush to make a "thunder cake" before a storm approaches. (The storm must have moved pretty slowly!) A recipe for the thunder cake is also included.
Beautiful story about a child and grandparent who gives her courage.
One of my kids favorite books when they were children. Fun recipe at the end. Author writes beautiful stories...
A book my daughter & I enjoyed more than 20 years ago, now she can read it to her own daughter!
Received a very nice copy of this book, I think it was a used book but in excellent shape. It arrived on time & packaged so there would be no damage - this is a book I used to read to my own daughter (& I have even made the Thunder Cake recipe that is at the back of the book) so I knew that she would love to have it to read to her own daughter now - very glad I purchased it!
They all loved it and paid extra special attention
I used to read this to my classroom of second graders when there were thunderstorms. They all loved it and paid extra special attention. One of the times I read it to them, we made the Thundercake. It turned out great! I have now been able to read it to my granddaughter. We have a great time reading it and making the cake.--even though she doesn't like chocolate she still likes to bake.

I bought this as a baby gift - the start of a library for him. It was one of my favorite books to read to my children and one that they loved. Patricia Polacco is a beautiful story teller of true tales. And beautiful illustrations.
Multi-family favorite
My 3 yr old son did not want to return this library book, so we got him one of his own. The librarian told me of the years of reading this to her students and how much of a favorite it is.
Great story!
This book was given to my daughters when they were younger by their "adopted" Grandma and it was a book that was truly treasured. The book was lost through several moves, but recently one of my daughters happened to mention this book and the found memory she had of it when she was younger. Being a Nani myself now, I wanted to find it for my granddaughter. It has brought back some very found memories of their Grandma Helen and the times we would read it through the storms and the cakes that were made from the recipe in the back of the book. So glad to have back on the book shelf.
Love Patricia Polacco's books
This book tells about a child who is afraid of thunder storms. Grandma decides to make a cake to distract the child and also help her relax by counting 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9, meaning the storm is 9 miles away. While reading this to second and third graders, they would help me count as the storm got closer and closer. Meanwhile, grandma and child were gathered all the ingredients and began making the cake. When the thundercake was done, so was the storm. They celebrated by having some delicious cake to eat.
It is a good story to read aloud and the children enjoyed it
I bought this book to read aloud to the kids at my church. During the service we have Children's Story time. It is a good story to read aloud and the children enjoyed it. I like how the author pairs children with older people. It is not my favorite Polacco book but it is a good one.
One great story
I was a volunteer in a 2nd grade class in which the teacher would read a chapter in a book after lunch. What a great story, the kids settled down very quickly and listened without a peep. That in and of itself says a lot. Highly recommend this book, a winner. I just bought this copy for a Christmas present for my favorite 3rd grader.
I love this book
I love this book. I always think about this story when it storms, and finally decided to track it down and purchase it for my nephew. He loved the pictures and the story :-)
Great story for a child who fears storms!
Patricia Polacco is so talented! Her stories are well developed her illustrations are gorgeous and all of her books bring me right back to my childhood. I recommend anything she writes but this is one of my faves by her!
Second Grade Class Enjoyed
My class really enjoys this book. It keeps their attention and is easy to read.
A portal for acceptance. As we read the story ...
A portal for acceptance. As we read the story, we experience adventure and camaraderie rather than a sense of being forced into a moral conclusion. The patterns are eye-catching as well as other objects illustrated that expose the child to another culture and life. Acceptance comes from a simple story with a goal- to amass ingredients. We deal with and overcome our fears as we move on through life- with, ideally, some support.

One of my favorites by Patricia Polacco. The illustrations are wonderful, the narrative gives the sense of an impending storm, getting louder and bigger. It can help children overcome their fear of storms by taking their minds off the storm and on to something else more interesting. The counting before the thunder is based on fact and also helps occupy the mind. A nice added touch is the recipe for the Thunder cake.
Wonderful book
My children love this book and so do I. It's a sweet story that's fun to read.
Worth adding to your children’s library
Sweet story of grandma and child. Love the illustrations.
One of our favorite family books
This is a sweet book. I love introducing this book to my children. We've had Thunder cake on our book shelves since our older children were young. I got this for our grandchildren. Patricia Polacco is a fantastic children's author. If you have a young child afraid of storms this is a great book to read to them.
Thunder Cake revisited
When my now 16 and 18 year-old grandchildren were small, Thunder Cake was one of their favorite stories, but somewhere along the way the book was misplaced. Of the younger group, one grandson is frightened of storms, so I gratefully found and purchased Thunder Cake for him. This story, combined with matter-of-fact attitudes in those around him, has helped him to overcome his fear. Nellie Peck Hen was a favorite of the older kids (we have real chickens as well as a chicken theme in the kitchen)and one of my "kitchen chickens" continues to be called Nellie by the kids. We have baked the Thunder Cake from the recipe in the book and it is a hit, especially when it is brought out immediately after reading the story. We're building our own memories as we go!
Love Patricia. Beautiful artwork and touching stories

Another great mentor text for memory writing with students. We also did a memory foods day and Thunder cake was made and enjoyed by students.
You’re stronger than you realize
Thunder cake is a wonderful story about a grandma and a little girl. This is a great book to teach theme. Grandma leads the granddaughter through several tasks to http the child discover how brave she is.
A favorite
Was so happy to be able to find this book. This is one of my favorite childhood books. It is a must read to a little one or just to have for nostalgia.
This book helped my kids overcome their fear of thunder.
This book is great for teaching a science lesson on thunderstorms. This book helped my girls focus on thunderstorm counting instead of their fear. There is also a fun recipe in the back of the book.
My all time favorite children's author
As always, Patricia Polacco weaves a tale that is full of character, meaning and shows the importance of the older generation for the younger generation. My all time favorite children's author.

Great book to read together!
This book is a family favorite! Beautiful, award winning illustrations bring alive a wonderful story of how a Grandmother helps her grandchild overcome fear of Thunderstorms. Yummy recipe included!
Amazing book to help overcome the fear of storms!
I stumbled across this story while searching for gentle stories to help my son cope with his fear of storms. We first listened to the audio told by the author and my son began asking for it everytime it stormed. I recently purchased the printed book and could not be happier! I must say that he now anticipates stormy weather so we can read "Thunder Cake"! The illustrations are beautiful and I absolutely love reading the book. The author's babushka reminds me of my own grandmother and is just so heartwarming. I highly, highly recommend this book!
Charming!
I read this book in a store a long time ago and wished I had bought it - now this Christmas I made it a gift to myself. The story is so charming, as are the paintings. It manages to capture the build up to a real Michigan thunderstorm! I had never heard of a chocolate cake that used tomatoes before reading this book. The inclusion of the recipe is a really nice touch. A very sweet, comforting story for all ages!
Wonderful book!
This book is great for historical fiction, teaching my kids about life a couple generations ago. It also helped my daughter become less scared of thunder and gives you an activity to do (make thunder cake). Great book!
Five Stars

Came to me in EXCELLENT condition!
Great Book!
Thundercake is entertaining and informative. The young listeners learn about the relationship between thunder and lightning as they enjoy a story about a clever grandma who distracts her granddaughter from fearing a storm by keeping her busy. I read this to my class with thunder "sound effects" and then I hide ingredients in the classroom and the students locate them and help bake a "Thundercake" in a crockpot! It's a memorable experience for all!

This is a wonderful story to read to your children if they are afraid of thunder. There is a recipe for thunder cake at the end which is pretty good! Patricia Polacco's books are very enjoyable!
Great story and illustrations!
My grandson came home from kindergarten telling me the story if this book. His teacher had read it to them in class. I ordered the book. He was thrilled. We are waiting for a rainy day, and thunder, to make the cake!
A household favorite. Beautiful story of working through your fears
A household favorite. Beautiful story of working through your fears. Illustrations are lovely to look at, and the Orthodox icons sprinkled throughout the book are a nice touch that my toddler enjoys pointing out.

One of my favirates especially since it has the recipe in the back
A Must for Grandmas or Moms with young children
What a wonderful book to share with little ones on a stormy day! We read the book, gathered our ingredients and made a Thunder Cake according to the recipe. Make sure to have some small brown bags to "pop" for the thunder, along with the real thunder. After the cake is finished, top with some gooey store-bought icing--yummy. Then have everyone guess what the "secret ingredient" is, only you and the little ones know. They'll have so much fun revealing the secret. This book is sure to make longlasting memories.
Ageless tale for every little girl
My granddaughter loves this beautifully written and illustrated book. The story of a little girl overcoming her fears with the down to earth help of her grandma is priceless and ageless. The setting takes a child to another time and place.
Very Satified
A friend recommended this author - all I had to do was type in her name and a whole list of her books came up. I purchased a used book but it was in perfect condition and at a quarter of the cost. I would recommend this product to everyone!
My son heard this book at school and had to have it
My son heard this book in kindergarten and he knows I love to bake. The book has a recipe for a thunder cake in it that uses tomatoes but it tasts like a regular chocolate cake...Fun way to have a memory together...Save it for a rainy/thundery day...use your garden tomatoes if you have them...but fun any way you do it.

Good read
This book is a great read with amazing artwork. It can be easily shared with grades 1st-4th maybe even the older grades when integrating into other learning aspects. This book would be fun to integrate with science ( thunderstorms), math ( recipe/fractions), and to try and recreate Patricia Polacco's watercolor art!
You will never believe the secret ingredient in this Thundercake!
I use to read this book to my students every year during this stormy season. The recipe at the end is not to be missed - or believed! delicious

One of Polacco's Best
I love this author and especially this book. I've made the recipe printed at the end several times with my children. A wonderful read aloud.
one of the best Childrens authors around
You can not go wrong, this author in someways shares tales of her own life into spellbinding reads. Some are funny, some are ones to make you think, and some are just plain fun
One of my favorite children's authors
This book is more than a child's book, but many children's books convey messages that could be received by adults as well...as to how to weather the storm. I assigned this to my freshman class, and asked them to discuss the message as it applies to their future!
Heartwarming story
Another wonderful Polacco story. This one particularly resonates with us because my granddaughter loves to cook and is deathly afraid of thunder storms. The illustrations are charming.

I love this book anyway
Well, I love this book anyway, but the quality as a used book was excellent, as advertised. I want several other books by P. Polacco, and will try at this vendor to order them when I have more book funds.
My 8 year old loves this book.
Her teacher read this to her classroom and she loved it so we had to buy it. It has the Thunder Cake recipe in there we can't wait to make and eat!

What a wonderful way of taking fears away. I have made thunder cakes with kindergarteners and shared the story with friends whose kids were afraid of storms.
