Do you believe in magic? Can you imagine a war between wizards? An exciting journey in an airship or down in a submarine? Would you like to meet the fastest truncheon in the Wild West?

The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner is the second fabulously funny short-story collection from the late acclaimed storyteller Terry Pratchett. A follow-up to Dragons at Crumbling Castle, this second batch of storytelling gems features stories written when Sir Terry was just seventeen years old and working as a junior reporter. In these pages, new Pratchett fans will find wonder, mayhem, sorcery, and delight—and loyal readers will recognize the seeds of ideas that went on to influence his most beloved tales later in life.

As Neil Gaiman says, “a Terry Pratchett book is a small miracle”—and The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner proves to be another miracle taking its place alongside Pratchett’s astounding and cherished body of work.

Funny!

If you are looking for a light, funny read, this is your book. It was like watching cartoons or Monty Python. Very bad for a bedtime book for me. I found it hard to stop reading, well, actually, listening to this one. 3:00 came too quickly. So, sorry if this sounds more disjointed than my usual reviews. Oh, I listened to the Audible using the whispersynch. Julian Rhind-Tutt (Narrator) is facinating! His voice changes with every character. He tells the story with so much gusto that sometimes I think I missed story for enthusiastic energy. Even still, at the end of each story I had that sigh of fulfillment. The stories themselves are sadly, mostly, male. In fact, the very first one ended with the main character marrying the witch with us hardly knowing a thing about the witch except that she was a witch. I wanted more about her and that parrot. Please forget that you just read the last two sentences if they seem spoilers. After all, the title of the book is The Witch's Vacuum. Seems like there should be a lot more witch and vacuums than men in the form of police or gnomes. But hey, Mr. Pratchett wrote this when he was a teen and the adage says 'write what you know'. Sadly, Mr. Pratchett knew nothing about the other half of society then. Later he did write some fun books that did have fems but mostly they are witches. Is it any wonder how the world is now if this is all anyone has read most of their lives? Still, I have loved Terry Pratchett's writing, so creative! Magick exists, but sadly without fems. Even colors we have never heard of exists. Don't get me started! YET, I love his writing. Fun, fun stories! So take it with a grain of salt that in male authors' worlds, fems hardly exist. We will try to change that with our own writings and making sure they see us as the other humans. After all the whole language system leaves us behind. Even human. We could be called hu. But it is for this teeny-tiny problem that I am giving the book four stars instead of five. If you can get the audio version you are in for the best story telling around--save for girls, fe=iron.

For NON-serious Terry Pratchett fans!

Lots of great stuff here for the devoted pTerry Fan. Mr Swimble and his bad day and the mysterious vacuum cleaner is the title story, and it is funny, phantasmagorical and lighthearted. We also have a great little pirate tale, Fourteen funny (and not so funny) gems from the talented pen of Sir Terry Pratchett. If you loved Dragons at Crumbling Castle, the stories from Terry's early days at the Bucks Free Press, you'll love this. Some are a little dated of course. In a supposedly "modern' story many of today's everyday conveniences are no where to be seen... which might be a Good Thing.... Aimed mostly at the younger audience, full of whimsy and sillyness. Sometimes with a point. Illustrated throughout by the fabulous Mark Beech, the illustrations work very well with this collection. There's also a bit of silliness with the typeface at times. Several are set in the Wild Welsh town of Llandanffwnfafegettupagogo (and yes, i had to cut and paste that one, and i am still not sure I got it right!). "Rincemangle, The Gnome of Even Moor" later became Truckers, and there are other hints of pTerry's mad genius to come sprinkled throughout.

A fun read

Even as a teen, Pratchett''s quirky sense of humor came through. These are all fun to read and I'm sure the grandchildren will enjoy them as well. I'm less enthusiastic about the way they played around with the fonts to emphasize certain words--rather like attaching a laugh track as if the reader couldn't figure out what's important.

Wondeful Tales , But...

The short stories are great and remind me of some of L Frank Baum's. Definitely recommended. However there is a problem with the formating. I suspect that some of the words we're supposed to be in italic but instead the words became much much larger than the normal size text. It could also use a bigger indent for paragraphs. It currently has a one space indent. I recommend getting the book and also sending a note to the publisher.

Half-baked stories and characters ... not the usual Pratchett quality

I have to admit that I was disappointed by most of these stories. I am huge fan of Pratchett's Discworld novels, so I was expecting a bit more than half-baked, poorly developed stories and characters. These stories feel like drafts. There are one or two really good short stories, but I'd consider the majority not worth reading.

quirky collection

A quirky short story collection from the late Sir Terry Pratchett written between 1966-1973 featuring gnomes, wizards, quests, odd things, the unknown Welsh Wild West, and everything in between. Must read.

Awesome little tales from a gifted young author! : )

This is a really cool set of short stories! I don’t know if these are all completely accurate as to his original works, but they are very creative and cute constructs. Very enjoyable.

Early Pratchett Stories Very Well Done!

While these stories are no quite on par with the authors Discworld books it was nevertheless a very enjoyable read. There were numerous instances where I had a good laugh and once at least that I shed a few tears. Overall a very good time was delivered and more than worth the price of admission to what was happening in Mr. Pratchett's head way back when he was just a young man!

Poor formatting takes away from the stories

I love Terry Pratchett's stories and his imagination, even in his earlier years, brings a lot of wit and entertainment to the table. So why the low score on this one? Simply put, extremely poor formatting by the publisher. It was as if this project was slapped together in a hurry, without anyone looking to see whether or not the words were 3, 4, or even 5 times bigger than they should be. In each story there are words that are incredibly huge, font-wise, alongside the normal texted words. This did not allow me to enjoy the stories, but simply pulled me out of them altogether. I suggest the publishers pull the ebook, go back and try this again. So the low star rating is certainly not reflecting Pratchett's wonderful work (I am a fan), but rather the very poor formatting that came with this ebook edition. I am sorry to say I cannot recommend this read to anyone.

Wonderful Adventures

As always, a great read, especially for young readers (including the young at heart). Entertaining stories of sheepboys of the wild west of Wales, the tiny people of Even Moor going against giant difficulties, and the ever-popular weird stories of Blackburry, are part of this collection of wonderful adventures you are sure to enjoy.

Exactly what I wanted!

Totally love Pratchett, got this as an e-book which is something new for me..... will probably buy a hard cover copy of it!

FUN

FUN if you are a Pratchett fan. Not as well done as his later works but great for kids and adults who love anything Pratchett.

Terry Pratchett, a man who wrote wonderfully, and was willing to go that extra mile to give my sweety an autograph when she was still recovering from chemo. God rest, Terry. I hope the Big Editor in the Sky gave you all the paper and ink in creation.

Excellent collection of whimsical tales

A delightful set of short stories that are sure to entertain. Perfect for children and adults! We could all use a bit more magic in our lives, and Terry Pratchett always delivers.

The earliest Terry Pratchett stories and a joy to see where he began his work and how it changed and matured as he did the same in his life and work. A nice collection to complete the Terry Pratchett experience.

The Early Years

Sir Terry Pratchett's early writings. It is a pure joy to read these stories with their sweet simplicity. I highly recommend this book.

Very funny

Very funny, a good addition to my Terry Pratchett collection.

Fun but short

Kindle/eReader format is not the best format for Pratchett, the King of Footnotes, as they are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page. An annoyance but not a deal breaker.

Early Terry Pratchett, as good as always

Everything Terry Pratchett has written is wonderful. These are early stories, and give an insight on his development as a writer. His wit, and keen observation is already present. Love it. It was truly cruel that he died too early.

One of the better anthologies.

Some of Terry Pratchett's earlier stories. One of the better anthologies.

Looks new and perfect t to me.

Looks good to me. It's going to be a Christmas present so, other than making sure it is new, I've just tucked it away for the holiday.

Enchanting and fun

The stories may be more simply written than his works for older readers, but Pratchett's humorous style is still evident.

nice to see how the ideas developed into his later

Interesting "older" stories, nice to see how the ideas developed into his later books

Excellent as usual

Though they are early stories you can see the humour and excellence typical of Sir Terry. Don't miss them. They are worth reading over and over again!

Simply wonderful.

Yay for more stories from Terry Pratchett! Reminded me how much I miss him.

Sadly makes me miss his mind more for having read it

Not as rich as the typical Pratchett; I bought it simply because I missed the wealth of wit and layers within his writing. Sadly, I still do.

Short story fun!

Enjoyed these quick reads.....interesting stories that were quite fun! Sir Pratchett will be sorely missed indeed. Love everything he has written.

Good stories.

Good book. Some stories were more engaging than others, but all were enjoyed.

Fun collection!

This was a great way to revisit Terry Pratchett. I have a lot of the Discworld novels, so it was fun to read a different type of story from him.

great Terry Pratchett

The late, great Terry Pratchett. What more needs to be said?

Imaginative and funny

Well conceived plots with whimsical twists. Delightful for 8 to 13 year old readers. Now must read more by this author. Linda Donaldson

Delightful collection of stories

This was a delightful collection of Terry Pratchett's early stories. I felt it lacked a bit of the polish of his later works, but they were still utterly charming.

The Beginning of Terry Pratchett

It's Terry Pratchett at his earliest although with some upgrades. Of course it's a 5 star book. Couldn't be anything else. There are also glimpses at future books and themess. It's a wonderful book.

Was ok. Kept repeating certain lines which became boring.

Wonderful little stories to make losing him a bit easier!

Great short stories. I love all of Pratchett's work and these made the loss a bit easier. Especially the gnomes!

Five Stars

Exactly as advertised

Enjoyable

This was the very first Terry Pratchett stories I've ever read. I'm hoping others will be better. The reads ere quick and enjoyable, but I was surprised they didn't invoke much emotion. The premises were neat for most, some just seemed silly. LoL.

It's terrible. It seems like someone is trying to cash in on some Pratchett's unfinished work. The stories end abruptly without any gotchas. Boring

Sorely disappointed

The discworld books are some of my favorite stories. This was a collection of short stories that I believe were done early in his career with none of the humor or interest of his latter books.

It was okay

My husband is a big fan of Terry Pratchett. He discovered his books earlier this year, and is currently trying to make his way through reading all of his books. Recently, I discovered that I actually own a couple of his short story collections. My husband started reading Terry Pratchett with The Color of Magic. I decided to start with The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories. I found it to just be okay. I listened to The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories on audiobook. I don't know if that hindered my enjoyment of the book. I don't do well with nonsensical books, which is what a lot of this was. At times, I found it almost too silly, and I would get bored with it, so my brain would start to wander. Then I would have to rewind my audiobook to realize what was going on. My least favorite story was definitely the first one, The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner. I had a hard time following along with what was happening, and it became more confusing than anything else. That being said, there were a couple of stories that I really did enjoy. I liked The Truly Terrible Toothache. It kind of reminded me of a story that I had heard as a child. I found it funny, and witty. I also enjoyed An Ant Called 4179003, and Rincemangle, the Gnome of Even Moor. The rest of the stories, I found to be just okay. A lot of them were boring in parts, and I kept wondering to myself when they were going to get better. I thought The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories was a quick, enjoyable book. However, it definitely won't make my favorite books of the year list. Even though I thought it was just okay, I definitely want to try more Terry Pratchett books. I think I might try his Discworld series before I try any more short stories, and see if I like that instead. I'm going to try The Color of Magic. I don't think I would recommend this for anyone's first Terry Pratchett book. Seasoned veterans of his writing style might like it though.

A collection of early works by Sir Terry. These were all written from the mid-sixties to the early seventies and published in Pratchett's local newspaper where he worked as a junior reporter. The stories are written for children and are all fun. Most of them were good with a couple of duds and a couple of excellent ones, averaging out to a solid rating of 3/5. 1. The Witch's Vacuum Cleaner - Cute story about a magician who gets cursed by a witch. Everything he touches changes into something else, usually odd, but he comes up with a way to appease the witch, Mrs. Riley. (3/5) 2. The Great Train Robbery - This is a story about the Wild West, the other Wild West, the one in Britain ... Wales. Amusing story of how the law derailed a heist. Lots of silly wordplay. (4/5) 3. The Truly Terrible Toothache - A deliciously fun magic story. A librarian finds an old book and reads an interesting bit which brings back Black William from the 16th century. Very quickly everything in the town turns back to its Elizabethan version. The librarian and police sergeant find out a way to help Black William and return to the 21st century. (5/5) 4. The Frozen Feud - This is another tale of the Wild West (Wales) with the same characters as the second story. This time the sergeant has to deal with two rival ice cream vans. Cute, but nothing special. (3/5) 5. Darby and the Submarine - This didn't do anything for me. Little people have an adventure while boating. (1/5) 6. The Sheep Rodeo Scandal - Another tale of the Wild West town in Wales. Not as comical as the other too but ok. Sheep rustlers come to town for the annual Sheep Rodeo. (2/5) 7. An Ant Called 4179003 - An ant decides life is dull in the colony and escapes. Then he meets a bee who has left the hive, and the two enjoy a quiet life together. Cute but not much.(3/5) 8. The Fire Opal - This a fun fantasy quest. The Troll Prince loses the fire opal set in his crown. It is said to have come from the centre of the earth. As it rolls away, three trolls including the Prince set off running after it. Along the way, they meet others of their own kind: tree trolls, troll nymphs, sea trolls, etc. Everything ends well but where they ended up is perfect.(4/5) 9. Lord Cake and The Battle for Banwen's Beacon - Once again we visit the Wild West in Wales, only this time we travel back into the past and find out about how the town was almost tricked out of its Coal Rush. (3/5) 10. The Time-Travelling Television -Several of these stories take place in a village called Blackbury, as does this one. After finding some strange fossilised items, a Professor looks up Bill Powers, and he takes her time-travelling where they meet a man from the future. Good.(3/5) 11. The Blackbury Park Statues - The statues in a park get worried when an old lady who has regularly visited her whole life suddenly stops coming. They find a way to bring her back. (3/5) 12. Wizard War - Two wizards can't stand each other and are always getting into spats sending spells at each other. When things get worse, the apprentice of one and the cat of the other go to the Grand Wizard for help .(3/5) 13. The Extraordinary Adventures of Doggins - A little longer than the other stories in this book. A fun fantasy of a man who lives alone on a mountain is visited by an airship and takes off with the captain and a girl to have some BIG ADVENTURES. Excellent.(5/5) 14. Rincemangle, The Gnome of Evan Moor - A gnome living in the country thinking he is the only gnome in the world takes off for the town. He arrives at a department store full of other gnomes, but tragedy strikes and all the gnomes have to learn to drive to escape. A very familiar story! This idea eventually expanded into the "Bromeliad Trilogy". (5/5)

A decent introduction to Terry Pratchett

As a fan of Terry Pratchett work, it was nice to get to read his first books (Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner and Crumbling Castle). `Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner` is a collection of short stories, in a style that precedes (but not matches) works like Discworld and Good Omens. The themes revolve around sorcery and mayhem, fantasy creatures and magic. The stories are witty, funny, imaginative, but make a very lightweight read. The characters and stories seem mostly like sketches, almost unfinished (which is kind of typical for a teenage writer). I wouldn't say it's a must read (especially if you love Pratchett's masterpiece novels), but personally I enjoyed reading the book; it's a good book for younger readers and people who haven't read his more complex work. I read the book in the Kindle format on my smartphone, I had a good reading experience.

Enjoyable Terry Pratchett stories

I love Terry Pratchett's writing style, it makes me want to dive back into Disc World again. This book is a collection of his early shirt stories, and I enjoyed all of them! For some reason I couldn't get into the "Wild West" stories, which I have in quotes because they are but they're not. If you read this book you'll know what I mean. Not sure why these couple didn't hook me, especially since I really like westerns and wild west stuff. Maybe it's just that I wasn't in the mood after reading the other stories, that have much different tones. Either way, I think it was just me, so I recommend this book for prior fans of Terry Pratchett's works, or for those that like stuff in a similar tone as Douglas Adam's. Quirky, imaginative, silly, British, etc.

Interesting stories, not as funny as discworld

What is it about? First of all, I had no idea until just a few minutes ago that Sir Terry Pratchett passed away in 2015. In 2009 he was knighted by the Queen. I guess she liked his stories, too. This collection of short stories was published in 2016, but most of these stories were written (according to other reviewers) in the 60's and 70's and remain largely unaltered (according to the publisher/narrator). The stories have a bit of variety of them. Some of them are about crime in a small 2 bicycle town. Some of them involve some form of time travel, or time unraveling in a way that takes you back a few generations. Others involve gnomes or people of even smaller stature. They are all interesting in subject matter. Was it good? I've read and listened to a lot of the Discworld books, and now I have certain expectations of Pratchett's writing and style. Since these stories were written before Discworld, I don't think they quite lived up to his literary reputation. The subject matter is interesting, but they just aren't as funny as Pratchett usually is. The narrator has pretty smooth and deep voice and I found myself thinking several times that I would love to be tucked into bed right now and just close my eyes and listen until I fall asleep.

Some of a good book

Ah; Sir Pterry. We hardly knew ye. In fact, I didn't know ye at all. But you've given me some of the most delightful moments of my reading life. Some of them are in this book. Not many, but a few. I'm delighted to have all the Discworld short fiction in one place, from "Troll Bridge" (a late adventure of Cohen the Barbarian) to "Death and What Comes Next" (a philosopher attempts to confound Death) to "The Sea and Little Fishes" (in which Granny Weatherwax decides to be ... _nice_). The early works here are decidedly trivial, decidedly juvenilia. None of them are actually _bad_, per se, but some of them (as Pratchett himself points out) could do with some serious pruning. But ... I mean ... the first story (a deal with the Devil, only it's the Devil who's doing the hiring) was published when he was _thirteen_. What do you expect? By the time you get to the '80s, Pratchett is writing with the grace and economy that is the hallmark of his later work. So: I'm glad to have it, and I'm glad to have read it, but I doubt I'll be rereading all of it in the future.

Not as good as the first but still funny, charming

While cute and entertaining, this volume is nowhere near as good as the first of the series The Dragons of Crumbling Castle. This seems like a second pass through the old stories, a second best choosing. The stories are enlivened with some inventive texts and humorous footnotes for a charming effect. The stories seem shorter here and a tiny bit less funny. There is still plenty of adventure and whimsy. The stories often return to the same place or situation: a coal mining (likened to gold mining) town in Wales, the enchanted town of Blackbury, and more. They are gentle stories where pitched battles with pirates are fought with mops and a sheriff pursues back robbers on a bicycle. I think these would make excellent read aloud bedtime stories with a chapter or two for a chuckle before bed. I look forward to the next collection.

Much like the previous book ("Dragons at Crumbling Castle")

Much like the previous book ("Dragons at Crumbling Castle"), this is a collection of Pratchett juvenilia. One of the later stories is clearly an early (much shorter) version of something that became his first novel ("The Carpet People"). It should work for people who are not familiar with Pratchett, although those who are well versed may find it a little lacking. It's somewhat rougher and more uneven -- but still worth the time.

Not Pratchett At His Best

These stories are mostly cute rather than good or genuinely entertaining. There are clever ideas within them, but only one or two captured the spark that made the Discworld series so enjoyable. This is undoubtedly the reason that these stories weren’t collected and published while Pratchett was still alive. True Pratchett fans will appreciate this last glimpse into his imagination but it doesn’t have a lot to offer for anyone else.

Magical, Funny Terry Pratchett is the BEST!

Love this book of short stories! I honestly have been laughing out load while reading it. Such a treat! I highly recommend it especially if you already love Terry Pratchett.

Some of the stories were lovely

Some of the stories were lovely but overall I found them a bit meh. I also realized that I've read them before so maybe I wasn't feeling it?

Imaginative and Quick Read

Great introduction to Pratchett and it could be read by teens and adults alike. Some of these would have made great serials.

Delightful!

I love to listen to Terry Pratchett's books. this one DID NOT disappoint!

It's alright.

It's alright. Nothing essential.

Tried to like it, sorry.

Brilliantly written children (of any age)'s stories printed with a lot of care and attention to the type setting; many words have been printed to show what they mean at points of excitement or drama, particularly onomatopoeic ones. The pictures are also great and my little one loved them (even if my reading of the story was not so interesting! :) I should also mention the font is quite large which makes things much easier on the eyes, especially if you aren't being allowed to hold the book while reading it! Definite recommendation.

A great read for children who are at the point where they are starting to read more advanced books.

I bought this for my daughter who is 6 and starting to really enjoy reading. She was a bit daunted by the fact that there was so much text (i.e. there were very few pictures) but after starting the first story all I could hear was her screeching like the parrot in it and laughing. The previous reviews are also correct - the typeface is such that it is a really good book for introducing a slightly more advanced way to read without scaring or confusing.

Terry Brilliant

I have renamed him! ...the Witches is a superb set of stories, and the characters themselves are already legendary, and the tales that these books portray are amongst the finest ever written. City Watch are another set of characters you should track down too, should you ever get the chance

Great way to get someone into reading without it feeling ...

My niece adores the short stories and charming little illustrations. Great way to get someone into reading without it feeling overwhelming or intimidating because the stories are bitesize and magical writing from Pratchett as always!

Lovely short stories for kids and older kids.

A nice book of short stories from a dearly missed gentleman. Terry was one of the greatest writers I’ve read. blessed be your memory Sir.

It's Pratchett, Jim, but not as we know it.

It's not the normal Pratchett. You can see where a lot of his ideas developed, and the basic Pratchett-ness of the stories is definitely there, but at the same time it is most definitely not the normal. Still a great read, though...

Truly enjoyable writing.

This was written as a children's book, but is perfectly suited to adults. It shows the start of a truly great writer, Terry Pratchett.

Very exciting

I love the funny stories and fantastic characters. I especially like the gnomes and the trolls they were very funny. A very good book I would say!

Fun stories

Sir Terry is one of the best writers. An enjoyable little collection of early tales from his legacy of work. A book for all ages of reader

... is aimed at younger readers it is still a good read for us older Pratchett fans

Although this compilation of short stories is aimed at younger readers it is still a good read for us older Pratchett fans.

Really entertaining

Though written by a young Pratchett the book shows his inventiveness , imagination and humour. Well worth reading. His death is a great loss.

7 year old loves these stories

A great collection from a wonderful writer. My daughter loves the quirky, clever tales and never tires of them.

Five Stars

I love Pratchett and these short stories are no disappointment

Good early stories from the master

Simple children's stories in the inimitable Pratchett style.

Pratchett at his most amusing.

A good read for young and not so young children. Nonsensical and amusing short tales likely to keep you amused by either reading them to children or just to yourself. This book would make a series of Jackanory all by itself.

Beautiful book

I bought this book as I have heard good things about Terry Pratchett. it's a great story and children and adults alike will love it. I had to get it once I saw Amazon sold it. It arrived promptly I'm one very happy customer.

A funny read

Cheered my niece up when she was off school sick, she found it very funny.

Fun for all

I do miss Sir Terry's books, the wit and wry comments developed into his later books from these more simple but twisted tales

second hand book

My grandson loved the stories in this book. The price was great as was the condition of the book.

True Terry

Typical early Terry Pratchett - if you like his more early than Disk World stuff will probably enjoy. Suspect was aimed younger ages but fine for me!

Fabulous book wonderful read

I love reading this book to my 6 yr old he loves the book and it’s a very welcome addition to his ever growing collection. Will be looking at adding more Pratchett stories to his collection.

Difficult to understand

I read the first two stories to my 7 year old grandsons and they said they could not follow the storyline, so have not read further.

Sweeet
