I'm not sure why so many people wrote rave reviews, and I certainly wouldn't pay $27 for it! It's nothing more than a blank workbook with a few prompts and pictures. There is no survival/wilderness information at all. There are suggestions for doing your own research, which is fine, but I could easily gather everything that this book has to offer in a $0.50 notebook.

Everyone Should Learn Survival Skills!

The Thinking Tree has come out with another winner! What a great book to learn and record your outdoor survival skills including flora and fauna...what's edible, what's poisonous, etc.; how to build fires, tie knots, and make shelter; first aid and orienteering; and how to find and purify water. The book also has some scenarios to practice your survival skills. My son and I are going to take my 10 and 14-year old grandsons and these journals to the woods on a friend's property and have "Survival School!" These are skills everyone should know, especially those who travel, camp, hike, or otherwise are around wilderness areas! Do some research using books, videos, or websites and fill out the journal pages then take them out and practice what you've learned. They have even included survival scenarios!

One of our favorites

For those thrust into homeschooling recently, you may not understand how Thinking Tree books work. They are not traditional workbooks with a set of directions that a child uses to practice a skill. Instead, they provide a creative platform and gentle guidance for documenting a study on a particular topic or topics. So you collect a few books, documentaries, activities, etc. related to a topic and use these pages to record what you are learning. We loved using this book with our nature guides and Bear Grylls’s how Survival School for my seven year old. Bear Grylls books are another great companion with this book. The pages give you topics to research and write about (first aid, medicinal plants, shelters, etc.) but sometimes we just use them to record what we are interested in, instead. For example, we don’t hunt so the page on hunting was used for more animal observations. I love the creativity and flexibility of these journals and my son loved the topic of this one!

One of my favorite Thinking Tree books ever!

ALMOST perfect

I just received this book and for the most part it is exactly what I was looking for. I only have one complaint and that is that they took what could have been a perfectly good secular book and added in a useless god comment. I will still use the book and allow my children to correct it as they see fit but it would have been a five star book if it weren’t for this.

Great Book to get you thinking about survival!

We just started this book but already love it! Yes it prompts you to do research but in a fun way! My daughter and I made a tent/fort, sat inside it and discussed what we would need in it bag and why. We looked up important things to have and wrote down the reason for it. Yes it's black and white inside (most books are) but your child can color them in. My daughter is only just 8 and was so excited to get this book and to start in it. So if you don't mind actually learning, doing some research to learn about something, having fun then this is great for you too!

A must for the outdoor family.

Beautiful book. Very happy with this purchase. My 7yo is thrilled!

Love it

My children love this journal! So much they can do on their own while they explore outside.

Love it!

My son LOVES this book. It has sparked his curiosity and driven him to research and find information. I love that it leaves the thinking and searching to the child and doesn't do the work for them! THAT is true learning! Great job Sarah Janisse Brown on another win

Great father - daughter journal!

Love being able to send the husband and daughter outside with this journal! great survival journal! My 11 year daughter enjoys this journal very much.

Absolutely pleased

Great book to learn basic survival skills - needs one alteration though

Love this book - the concept of learning through creating your own handbook is awesome. Only suggestion for improvement is about the section on dangerous animals - I was surprised insects weren't included while being utterly mystified by what 3 birds there could possibly be to include... We used white-out & changed ours, but it was puzzling to me. A little fine-tuning on the scenarios in the back wouldn't hurt, but less important. Overall though, a good purchase I have already recommended to others. And I shall keep my eyes open for scary birds from now on!

Awesome

This book is so cool my little guy is 8 his daddy is helping him with this book recently they researched poisonous plants together at the library with this book. Older boys would definetly love doing this on their own. You have everything in here from wild life to plants, survival skills like fire and water and shelter. How to skills like knots, orienteering first side survival bag and different survival scenarios very cool book and I love that my husband and son can do this together my girls could certainly join in easily since thinking tree journals are for family use I can make copies for the children in my home!

These journals will be an amazing way to capture what we learn about harmful plants and animals, edible plants, how to purify water, build a shelter, and so much more! My kids are super excited to work on this one and learn these useful skills!

I love that it makes you dive deep!

Another incredible book by TTT. This is one that I got for my kiddos (8 & 9) and then ordered another for myself because I wanted to learn more about our wilderness alongside them. We LOVE camping and are working towards being more reliant on the land rather than what we pack. This workbook is turning into an incredible resource for us. Yes. You need to self start. Yes, you need to self lead. Yes, you need to pull your resources. All of that is what makes it SO good. There are prompts but people from all around the world can use this book and tailor it to their specific locations. That's the exact beauty of it. Thank you - Again!

AWESOME for high energy, active and outdoor enthusiasts

The first “lesson” in this book is about poisonous plants. My soon to be 4th Fraser was hooked. He googled pictures, read out loud facts to me, colored the pictures and tried to keep going to the next lesson. He was actually mad I made him stop. He would probably do half the book in one day if I let him. This is a child who has massive focus and attention problems. We are hooked. I ordered an entire curriculum of fun schooling for next year.

I recently purchased this journal, and began using it together with my teenage son. He is very much into video games, and we are using this journal with one of his games that involves survival after a disaster. We've been taking notes related to the game, discovering and discussing survival needs. And how we could prepare ourselves for needed survival during a power outage, or being snowed in and unable to get to town. A very fun and useful journal that can be used in many ways!

Too advanced for my 6yo.

For a child old enough to write/draw and research on their own but honestly it doesn't have anything in it except prompting questions that they have to find all information on their own. Inside is all black and white. Nothing like the viverent cover.

Its a journal

If you love funschooling journals, this one is great. It engages your children to do the research with guided prompts. Its great paired with usbornes survival series and a knot kit. Its not a text book per say it prompts your children to take what they've learned to create their own textbook to their styling. I encourage you to go to funschooling.com

A wonderful Adventure

This has been one of my son’s favorite learning books. He takes it out side and uses it as his field guide of sorts. He takes notes, draws pictures, and researches animals, plants, and more. It has even been a book that has been used on camping trips. It’s pretty much complete and he is requesting another one. Thank you Fun Schooling for making a difference in our homeschooling life!

This journal allows your students to study the various aspects of science- and keep the information they learn in one place. It has pages for researching scientists, tracking experiments, exploring the periodic table and more. I love that it allows kids to study the types of science they want to explore. I purchased a few experiment kits that I plan to use along with this journal, and I know my son will have a thorough record of our studies after we finish this year of schooling because we have this book on hand!

So glad I found these!

I bought for gifts for young boys for orienteering themed gifts for Christmas to go with good quality compass and other items they will use (and enjoy!) while learning the excellent life skill of map reading and orienteering!

Loved by all our children!

This is "fun-schooling"! Honestly, I ordered it because it was on sale & wanted to see some the style before ordering other (more pricey) books by this same family. We were not disappointed. It contains just enough information to peak the students interest in a particular topic & loosely direct them through their own journey, learning as much or little as they are bent. Practical, entertaining & individual. Perfect for this family of 12.

Great journal to keep our studies in!

Love this journal! It is so helpful to have several of the different fields of science included in the same book! So convenient for record keeping and auditing for homeschooling. We enjoy researching the scientists and their methods and having many lengthy and informative discussions.

Wonderful!

It's wonderful. I ordered one to preview it, and immediately ordered two more. Planning on using it next year as a supplementary curriculum for health and science. I wish all of their workbooks were this affordable, because it really is phenomenal!

This book would be great for any subject of science

I am excited for my oldest to use this book. He has wanted to learn more about the periodic table and this book gives lots of different ways he can write in it. It has a section for experiments, biographies of who he is studying, and several others. This book would be great for any subject of science.

Not what I expected

This is a BLANK journal with suggestions for child to research themselves. Not bad, just not what I wanted.

We love this handbook!!!

One of our favorite Thinking Tree Journals!!! My girls loved working this library based journal as they learned outdoor/survivor skills. Their favorite part was plant identification, they looked up the plants, identified them, and then went on a scavenger hunt to find them in our local area. I love the learning, they love the learning, everyone wins with Thinking Tree/Funschooling Curricula.

Excellent tool!

This book is perfect for my son who loves the outdoors and is constantly researching survival skills. I love that he chooses the books from the library or his collection of Bear Grylls’ books and then records what he thinks is valuable or important to remember! Found the handbook to be an excellent tool for keeping up with independent research and interest led learning!

Love it!

Really love this for homeschooling. It gets my kids researching and interested in things they could find useful someday. You get out of it what you put in to it. We go into a lot of detail with different parts and it can become almost like a secondary science.

great for the reluctant learner

I have two teens, one loves outdoors and the other is a gamer. I bought one copy and had to order another as both teens wanted to do this book. I love the fact that you can tailor this to information and research about your own local region.

I really like this quite a bit

I really like this quite a bit. We have gone through several curriculums for homeschooling and this one really has caught the interest of my children because they have a lot of options to choose to study what they are interested in.

A must for our scientists!

Great choice for my science loving students! This approach allows for many topics and books-not just one science topic. What a great way to document their best work or their everyday writing skills.

Encourages a love of science!

Great resource for delight-driven science studies!

Not our favorite

Not as good as other books

Not disappointed

This journal is great for students to record their science learning from books and online websites or videos.

Amazing!

A wonderful way to record science info, experiments, famous scientists...a fun way to document and learn!

DIY

Good for any science curriculum

Strong Mental Skill-building

Homeschooling a teenager, this was a good fit.

Learn medicinal plants and more

Fun book, lots to learn and consider. Got my child thinking about outdoor living, safety, and adventures. :)

Five Stars

My son loves this book.

We love it

We love this book for homeschool. I love all the different topics you can cover with just this one subject. Great book!

Well thought out, lots of information!

This book is amazing! My kids and husband are excited to start it!

Light on the survival guide, heavy on the workbook

This is a workbook NOT a survival guide

Love it!!

Our 15 yr. old son is using this one to document all he learns in Chemistry this year. And we will have a journal to keep is needed for graduation, or just a nice keepsake!

Awesome journal!

My kids love this journal for outdoor adventures for our homeschooling!

Homeschool nightmare, not worth it

Was going to use for 3rd grade summer enrichment. The lousy news print paper make pencils writers "break" the paper and pen writers bleed through. Coloring can only be done with crayon. This is disappointing to kids who prefer colored pencils or markers. Overall, little actual learning included. Time and effort better spent on family weekend day trips and making your own book. This one is worthless.

Expected more

I was expecting a little more to this. However it is a nice journal to jot down science discoveries. I do feel like it's for older children though not my almost 1st grader. I would say more 2nd or 3rd grader.

A good book for those who have children interested in survival skills.

This is a book that gives ideas for the user to research for their own area. different plants & animals to see if their dangerous or beneficial in a survival setting. It also has places for writing notes on what you've learned about in First Aid, Fire, Knot Tying, & Shelter.

Liked

We like this book

Brilliant!

Does need more information in it and what to do stuff, but overall a fun survival guide for kids

Fun learning for your adventurers!

My oldest son has been waiting for this book ever since we knew it was being done! We are using the Thinking Tree journals and love them - so when we were selected to review this book he was so excited. He spent a good part of the morning looking through it and informed me he LOVES it! My oldest daughter also looked through it and informed me she needed a copy too. So it's not just for boys - adventurous girls will enjoy it as well. :) It addresses multiple topics including safe and poisonous plants, dangerous animals, hunting and fishing, building shelters and fires, finding water and first aid. It also has several scenarios to put your info to use. As a side note there is a section on hunting and dressing animals in case someone is sensitive about such things. I would recommend this for 3rd grade and up. I have been using Thinking Tree Books for a couple of years and was happy to receive this book as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown.

A review from a Troop Beverly Hills kind of mama 😉

A little book with a LOT of punch! If you have an Adventure or wanna be adventurer in your family this journal is great for helping them learn how to stay safe while they run free. Plus there is such a variety of science included. This isn't a stay at the table kind of book, it's a get out and explore adventure kind of book. I have been using Thinking Tree Books for a couple of years and was happy to receive this book as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown

Great outdoor skills!!

I have been using thinking tree for a couple of years and was so excited to receive this journal as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown. I'm so in love with this journal. First it gives the kids the opportunity to personalize it for their own area, It isn't just a generic how to list of things to do but has the children research on their own, which I feel really sets in the learning. Sections in the book are plants, poisonous, medicinal, edible. Animals dangerous vs safe and place to write down tips to avoid and protect yourself, Shelters. Research how to build and try it out. Fires different types of fires and when to use each, Knots and when to use them. Scenarios to talk through and then research to see if you are correct. This book is packed with ways to learn some great survival skills including hunting, cleaning and preparing . Along with fishing in different types of areas. My son has autism and his main focus is outdoors. This journal is perfect for him. He is also in boy scouts so this journal helps reinforce skills he has already learned. I would highly recommend this journal for any outdoor enthusiast. Mainly for 3rd grade and up but can be used for younger kids with parents help.

Beginning Survivalist in Training

How do you prepare your child for survival? Where would you start your thought process is? I often wondered that myself, that is until I was given the opportunity to review The Thinking Tree Wilderness Adventure handbook A Survival Guide and offer my honest opinion on it. I found the process of teaching about poisonous plants, they call flora, first then moving on to safe plants wonderful. They then moved on to introduce consumable and ornamental plants. They also introduced medicinal plants and herbs which can come in very handy. They proceed on to fauna or animals and discuss wildlife dealing with poisonous and dangerous animals in many categories: reptiles and amphibians, birds, mamals, and fish. It also helps to research safe animals in each category. To end this section it has the student look up or create ways to safely hunt, trap and fish. The next section discusses the three key factors of survival which is water, shelter, and fire. It helps to explore ways to purify water, start fires safely and create shelters. Not only do the students learn about these ideas in the books they have borrowed from the library to use with this journal but it strongly encouraged them to try the techniques and practice them in controlled environments to be prepared. The next section of the journal has the student learning about knots and researching them. It also suggests practicing them. This is followed by a section on orienteering or using a compass which is a great skill to have. One may not always have signal on a smart phone with GPS and being able to use a compass may come in handy. This section ended by talking about packing your first aid kit and survival bag (or bug out bag). This is used to help you and/or others in case of an emergency. The last section of the book has some senarios in it. It would be a great way to "test" what has been learned throughout the lessons. I personally plan I using this book over and over again. It will be one that will be added to my reorder list because as I move the list of plants will change. This would make a great book for scouts, homeschoolers, or preppers. I feel that as ones knowledge changes they will want more copies to keep on updating!

Absolutely love this book!

I have been using Thinking Tree Books for a couple of years and was happy to receive this book as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown. We have been reviewing it for a short time, but absolutely love it! My 12 year old took a look at the first few pages and wanted to go straight to the library for books. This book will appeal to children of a wide range of interests from animal lovers, botanists, adventure seekers, researchers, investigators and anyone that just enjoys the outdoors. I look forward to learning about poisonous and edible plants, dangerous fish, birds, mammals etc and survival and first aid as my kids investigate these topics using this book. Definitely a great addition to our Fun schooling collection!

I like how the Science Handbook includes creative writing

Awesome new journal by The Thinking Tree will offer a plethora of cool topics about survival in the wilderness!!

I have been using Thinking Tree Books for a couple of years and was happy to receive this book as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown. An adventure handbook, survival guide, and science journal for school? You bet ya! This is something you would think could only be found in Scouting but I'm here to tell you it's not just for Scouts anymore! In this AWESOME new journal by The Thinking Tree, you will find a plethora of cool topics about survival in the wilderness. Starting with wildlife all the way through survival scenarios and everything in between! My 11 year old son loves this journal and can't wait to incorporate it into our fun-school starting Monday morning! Don't let the book cover or title fool ya either - it's not just for boys. Any child interested in nature, animals, science, first aid, and how to survive in the wilderness would love this journal! To be honest, I think I'm just as excited as he is for this journal!

I was able to get my hands on this copy and I thought it would fit the bill for my son. He loves playing survival and when I got to see the inside and I loved the idea of getting some learning in with with his passion. What ended up happening is that my daughter ended up taking over and having fun using her love for nature and art. This book works beautifully with the game Wildcraft. We love it and it works wonderfully for a nature study as well as survival safety. I have been using Thinking Tree Books for a couple of years and was happy to receive this book as a gift from Sarah Janisse Brown

A Fun and Creative Way to Document Your Science Learning!

There are already lots of great video and photo reviews of this Science Handbook and Portfolio available online. It is a lovely and unique book that I think will help kids get excited about doing science and documenting their findings. All of the other Thinking Tree journals that I have purchased or seen online seem to be intended to be used in more of a linear way, working from front to back to complete the book. This book is different, and encourages you to jump around, flipping to different sections and filling in the pages out of order. I will briefly outline what each section in this book looks like and tell you how big it is. Hopefully this can help you plan how you would use this book to help your child learn more about science in a more creative and fun way! The first page contains a Table of Contents. This is a helpful tool for telling you the orders of the different sections of the book, but not as helpful as I had hoped as almost none of the pages in the book are actually numbered! Hopefully future editions will correct this and add page numbers to all of the pages. Turn the page and you will see 35 different science themed photos on the left hand side to help inspire you as you think about what you want to learn about science. The right hand side asks you to list 5 things you want to learn, and gives you some action steps to follow to get started. My Science Books: The next four pages have spaces for you to draw the covers of your science books. There’s room to record 16 different books. My Science Tools: The next two pages have spaces for you to draw your science tools, with 8 boxes for you to fill in. Research & Reading Time: This section contains 9 copies of the same two-page spread. On the left hand side are spaces for you to record name of book, topic, date, chapter name, page number, title, and then several blank lines for writing. On the right hand side there are 3 blank boxes for drawings and one box with lines for notes. My Experiments: In this section the left page is blank for you to tape or draw images in, and the right side has four blank boxes for observations and discoveries. There are 5 copies of this two-page spread. Biography of a Scientist: This section has 5 copies a two page spread with spaces for you to record a title and date on the left side and a large lined section for writing, while the right side has five blank boxes for notes or drawings. Science Stories: This section also has 5 copies of the same two page spread. The left side has a creative writing prompt “If I had Discovered:_______” with blank lines for writing, while the right side is blank for drawings, photos, and images to go along with what you are writing. A Study of Scientists and Scientific Discoveries [Here I found another small typo - in the Table of Contents (both the one inside and the one on the back cover) this section is listed as “A Study Scientific Discoveries” - oops!]: Another section with 5 copies of the same two page spread. This time the left side has four boxes for Who? What? When? How?, while the right side is mostly blank for drawings, photos, and images, but with some lined space on the bottom for writing. Science Vocabulary & Spelling: There seems to be a pattern here, as this is another section with 5 copies of the same two-page spread. The left hand side has space to record the date, and asks you to look up and define 5 words. The right side says to choose and record 10 spelling words related to science. Science Films & Tutorials: The final section with 5 copies of the same two-page spread! Here the left hand side has space for you to list 6 films/tutorials/documentaries you are using, while the right hand side has space for you to go more in depth for one video with boxes for drawings and notes and comments. This means you have space to document 35 different videos! My Science Projects: This section is a little bit longer than the others, and one of my favorites. It begins with a two-page spread for you to catalogue 12 projects. Then it follows with 12 two-page spreads titled “Science Project #1”, “Science Project #2”, etc. which gives you lots of space write more detailed information about each of your projects along with drawings, photos, and images. There was another typo in this section, as on the pages where you are to catalogue your 12 projects, there is actually only space to catalogue 11 of them as number 5 was skipped. It looks like it was accidentally cut off of the bottom of the left hand page, but there is easily enough room for you to write it in the bottom of the page there. Record Keeping, Charts, & Graphs: This is a section of 10 pages of blank graph paper. Fortunately these pages are numbered, so you could easily refer to them in another section. It would be nice if the blocks were smaller, I think, as the squares are nearly 1”x1”. Research, Essays, and Creative Writing: This is by far the largest section of the book with 27 repeated two-page spreads! They are not identical as in the other sections though - the left hand side has an assortment of science-themed black-and-white photos which either take up the full page, or covers the top section with a small blank box at the bottom for your own drawings. The right hand side is a ruled page for you to write in with blanks at the top to record a title and date. These lines are fairly narrow, especially compared to the wide ruling used for all the other blank writing pages in this book. I would say it is comparable to and perhaps even narrower than the ruling used in college ruled notebooks. That’s a lot of writing! I would have preferred to see a more even distribution of page in the sections, with a few more of each of the other kinds of two-page spreads instead of so many pages in this section. Also, while the photographs are interesting, they are probably not going to go along with everything a kid wants to research and write about. Make Your Own Periodic Table of the Elements: This section shows the periodic table on a two page spread, followed by a blank periodic table for you to fill in. This repeats four times, for a total of four copies of each. Other Science Books: The last section of the book has spaces for you to draw in the covers of extra science books you end up using. There are six more pages of here, with room for 24 more books. Combined with the covers you drew at the beginning, that gives you room to record 40 science books! I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Overall, this looks like a great resource for giving some direction and ideas to help get kids interested in learning more about science, and I’m looking forward to using it with my children. I think it could be used with younger children if you are willing to do it together and record much of the writing for them, while older children would be able to work more independently. I love that this book encourages you to do both traditional science activities (run experiments, do projects, write and research) along with some non-traditional ones (make your own periodic table, creative writing about inventions, watching science videos, writing biographies of scientists). I love how it can be adapted for all kinds of science topics, and for a wide range of ages. Another great Thinking Tree book!

author has the right to make a God comment

Love how the book is some what directive but open-ended so the students can research for themselves rather than just spitting back out rote answers that someone else gives.

This book is awesome! I think it can be used with funschooling or a curriculum. We will be using it with apologia chemistry and physics. Spelling and creative writing are included as well as periodic tables. Lovely black and white photographs are also included. Just an over all very nice record of learning for science. Includes place to record books used, research scientists, record projects and experiments, write both research and creative writing assignments, record videos watched, graph space, blank and complete periodic tables and room to add your own drawings or photographs.

Lots of useful info

Great journal for older kids and even adults to learn more about plants, animals, and survival skills. Lots of prompts to get you thinking and researching to learn more.

Great!

Got two for both my sons! Wonderful tool for adventuring and ministering to younger youth!

We love it!

My son is so excited about this journal! We have many funschooling journals from The Thinking Tree & we love them all, but I havent seen my son as excited for anything as he is this particular journal. It's very well done, instructing them to research everything from wildlife (flora & fauna), to survival essentials (fire, water, shelter), how-to (knots, orienteering, first aid, & packing a survival bag), and it gives several scenarios and they record the proper actions that they would take in that situation. We are very anxious to get started on this journal!

Thumbs up!

Love the Thinking Tree journals, we have many and this one does not disappoint! My science kid will love this journal to show her learning next school year.

Very in depth yet student led learning.

I got this book on sale from a recommendation in my homeschool group. LOVE IT!! We are very student led in our homeschooling. Allowing that to happen with regular workbooks is hard! But this book is directed at student led learning! Makes things so much easier for them! It lines out what needs to be learned without telling them specifically how to learn it. One of my kids much prefers a hands on approach to learning. Another of them is a book worm and would much rather find his information in books or online. With this workbook, they can do just that! To focus on the survival point of this book - wow! It has them making shelters, fires, dealing with emergencies etc. So much deeper than I expected. We'll be getting more of these books for sure!

Perfect for the whole family!

This is another amazing journal by The Thinking Tree. In this journal you and your child will learn what's edible, what's poisonous, how to build fires, tie knots, how to make a shelter; first aid, how to purify water and so much more. My son is still a bit young to work in the journal by himself, but we work on it as a family since we live on the bush line and feel these are important skills for our kids to know regardless of age or gender.

An Outdoor Lovers Dream

This journal is fantastic! If you have a curious, active child, they will love using this journal. Tons of great prompts for everything from tying knots, to building shelters. My 12 year old loves it.
