This book has pretty hard-core skills instruction
This is a book I first bought when it was originally published, then lost over the years. That was before the term "homesteading" was in use, but it was something I have long been interested in. Now that I am an old retired person and actually have the time and means of homesteading, I wanted my old friend and reference book back. This book has pretty hard-core skills instruction, with lots of illustrations. Interspersed are stories of the old mountain people and ways. To me, it's more than a "how to" manual, it's a link to the past.
Educational without being boring series that preserves the "old ways". I wish I had the whole collection!
I read many of the Foxfire series in my 20's as my aunt had a huge collection and now that I am 60 years old, I still find them fascinating. While I was raised in a city, I used to have long visits with my maternal grandmother who had a large farm in the mountains of Tennessee. She was a very unconditionally loving person and taught me a lot of folklore that I treasure today. I was grieved when she died when I was 17 years old but while reading these books, I can feel her at my side, her voice in my head always teaching me the old ways. Now my 18 year old son is presently hooked on the books and sometimes we read them out aloud together. While reading the books, I tell him stories about the history of his family as well as the farm which is still in our family today (although, sadly, no one lives there or farms it anymore). The Foxfire series is so varied and interesting that anyone could find some of the topics, if not all of them, educational and intriguing. I am so glad that someone took the time to preserve the history of the "old ways".
Classic History That Shouldn't be Forgotten
I first read this book when it showed up in the library in the early 1970's and it still holds it's charm. I'm no longer that border-line hippie who wants to live off the land, so much of the useful information has become nostalgia, but there are still lessons to be learned about life that can't be taught in any classroom, only in life itself. The basis for the Foxfire book, and others in the series, was a magazine published by Appalachian students collecting their family teachings and lore. Presented exactly as written, or dictated, by the authors of each article, the language and grammar may be off but the knowledge and beliefs are evident in the pages. The families, individuals and stories are really the collection of skills mastered over the generations of living in the environment, skills that are lost in most of the modern world but that would be easily found in what many refer to as "Third World Nations." For all those viewers of the various homesteading, off-grid living, and survival programs on TV, this is what that life was like before cable TV and the internet took over for books, newspapers and stories around the dinner table.
A very good read.
I read the entire series of Foxfire books back in the early 80's and decided to see if it meant more to me now than it did when I was a young man. It did. One thing that meant much more to me as an older man are the verbatim words of the people spoken about in the books. They even use the vernacular of the old time Kentucky mountain people. But it is what they are trying to pass on to the newer generations that means so much to me, and I suspect this is the very reason the Foxfire series of books was written in the first place. I highly recommend these books to anyone who is interested in the history of this part of America, and especially to anyone who is interested in learning how the old timers did things. This can be essential information if the country ever collapses into the chaos of economic self-destruction or governmental collapse. I am going to purchase the entire series of books again, and this time they will be kept on bookshelves and saved for any future contingency. I highly recommend these books to you. The only negative thing I have to say about them is the poor quality of the binding and paper used to print them. If I could find these books in hardback, printed on better paper with better photographic prints, I would buy them the instant I saw them.
Learning from the past
This is an outstanding book, it contains many of the methods used for all types of very useful home & survival crafts. These are old art forms, that were used frequently by our ancestors which without this kind of documentation would otherwise be lost to time. I highly recommend this book.
Great read!
Love reading about many of the "old ways" the people of the Appalachian and Smoky Mountains that helped them survive life. Have even tried a couple of the meat smoking and soap making suggestions. Life was hard, but they didn't complain and made the best of it, and even enjoyed it. If you're interested in reading about the "old ways" of mountain living, or maybe getting even trying to get back to the earth, these are the books for you. Great price, easy reading, informative, and just plain interesting I would recommend these to anyone. The dealers from whom I ordered shipped promptly and the book was just as described. So far, I have books 1-7 of the collection. Excellent!
this is a treasure of a book
This book is a true treasure! The Foxfire Book is full of the information and lore collected by the students of Rabun County, Georgia. They made a project of preserving the old ways of their parents and grandparents, who have lived in those mountains for generations. If you ever had a curiosity, or wondered about what it may have been like to live the way the pioneers lived or the settlers of old, this book tells it all. It even tells you how build your own cabin, with a fireplace, how to plant by the signs, meaning by the position of the stars in the night skies, how to make moonshine, and how to use use herbs provided in nature for healing. I cannot go into all the details of this book without basically reciting the text of the book, so instead I will just say that you need to buy it and read it - the pictures and photos make it come to life. This is the original survival manual!
Great book and if your a survivalist you'll like it also.
Very good book with a ton of knowledge. This book should be in every survival training class. It has alot of good information that a survivalist could use. Only complaint is that during the printing process is there is some words that was cut off on some pages. Not enough you cant figure out what it says though.
Foxfire Book 1
I really like this book, it is very interesting and entertaining. I would suggest anyone who is interested in how people lived in the Appalachian mountains to purchase this book. There is a great deal of knowledge that is found in this book that is lost to the generation growing up today.
Practical Knowledge - Highly Recommended
The Foxfire books are a window into the past and are a great resource for those looking to learn how to do things the "old ways". We added this series to our emergency book collection since the knowledge contained would be very useful during a prolonged disaster. I was raised without a TV, we ground our own flour, planted a large garden, hunted and raised livestock for food (my sister wrote a book about our lifestyle,

a classic
This book is one of those classical works that belongs on everyone's book shelf. For starters it is written in the literary style of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. The subjects it covers include most of the things people come across every day in their ordinary living. Reading about the building of a log cabin gives one an understanding of architecture and hog dressing helps one understand what's in the meat case in the supermarket. I doubt that I will ever put up a still and make whiskey but I have to admire the work that went into an old fashion quality product. This is one of those books I'll probably read several times. I can enjoy it enough to laugh sometimes. It's no wonder that this book is still popular after more than 50 years.
Easy to read and understand.
Wonderful books. So full of the knowledge that was used to survive at the time and says past. I purchased mine used and it arrives in time and in excellent condition. The only thing I didn't appreciate was the sticker placed on the front cover by the seller. It would have been better placed on the inside of the cover.
The Foxfires are a must have for any....> country, old ways or plain old sentimental person.
ALL the True Foxfires < written by < duh > E. Wigginton are nearly the best " survival " books I have ever found. I have , treasure and guard them all. How to do it without....ta da The Grid. Do watch what you buy, there are...Foxfire tributes, etc...that is why I specified " look for above " author. They cost much more now...I've had mine for quite awhile, I still purchased one I discovered missing. Awesome, awesome books.
Good book but not what I thought it was
Good book but not what I thought it was. Still a great read to see how the ol timers did things. Not a survival type of book at all but a series of reflections on what or how things were done in the times of the Great Depression and before.

I have been reading e-books for so long I had forgotten that paperback books print is so small. The book is fine - good shape and quick shipping - full of folk lore. I wish it was offered in e-book so I could increase the font size.
Absolutely love!
Growing up in the South, books about the culture in and around Appalchia hols a special place in my heart. Very informative of much needed skills and easy to understand.
Read and learn.
Read the originals in 1974, own a set of hard backs. Got this for a friend who’s never heard of this series. Read them and see what life was like not so long ago.
Great knowledge of long ago
These books are awesome!! I wish they could go and write new ones before we lose all of the knowledge the elders have! 😊
glad to find at such a price
I was really glad to find this and other books in this series at such great prices. My husband just loves the Foxfire series of books on mountain lore. It is amazing what life was like in the Appalachia Mountains and just how they made a life for themselves and their families. I love all the quilting squares that are in this book. Some of them I haven't seen since I was a little girl and my grandmother made quilts. I plan tobuy my husband more of these books in the future since he loves them so much and you would be surprised at what you can learn from them that will help you in your day to day life even now.
Folk Wisdom and Survival Skills Explored and Explained in Depth
We bought this book for a friend who wants to build a still. It contains all you need to know on that topic, along with folk wisdom and skills of the folks in NE Georgia county Rabun. A great resource, and the first book in a large series.
Great book
My son was reminiscing about the old foxfire books so I bought this for him for Christmas. It was a huge hit. I plan to get him more in the series. A great book for people interested in the old ways things were done and stories passed down through generations
Should be added to any library
Not only is this book historical and educational, but the quality of the book is superb. Not cheap and feels good in the hand.
Invaluable info!
Ordered this to replace the original that disappeared. Good quality in binding and full of good info.
Foxfire is a wonderful read
You drift back to the old days and learn some skills. People didn’t have much material possessions but they had big hearts and shared joyful times.

Great book for young teens to read to visualize how people survived the still do in the mountains A project of a high school class that grew to a great series of books. ..
Glad I got it
Had heard about the series, decided to try the book. It is a quite enjoyable read, so far. Glad I got it. Vendor delivered a good product in good time, I'll buy from this vendor again.
Foxfire
Good information for what i was looking for
Great Product Quality. Great delivery time.
Great Product Quality. Great delivery time.
It was one of my 6th grade readers
great information and a good read for people interested in the old ways.
Appalachian wisdom
This is an excellent book that was written by an inspired English teacher and his class. The teacher was frustrated with the students lack of attention, and decided to try a new tactic, writing a magazine. They then went out and interviewed their elders on a variety of interesting subjects such as faith healing, hog dressing, log cabin building and many more unusual items. It is a wonderful resource and an entertaining read as they often quote the people in their dialect, so you feel the atmosphere.
Great Book!!
Have always loved these books.
Wonderful information from days of old
This is a wonderful book complied from "mountain people" who lived in a time when everything was not easy and nothing was free. It relates information on how to live and the knowledge gained over generations about what works and what doesn't work. Some may think that this is information of folklore, but these are the practices and ways that I remember the old people using when I grew up. If you are wanting to learn the "old fashioned way", this is a great source of information that is tried and true.
Excellent historical books!
The books were delivered in like new condition. If you have an interest in how people lived way back in the 1800s, these are great books. a
Excellent book.
Purchased as a gift for my daughter and she loves this book. She uses it as a reference for so many things.
Remember, don't give up your history........
It could all change. How you live, how much you provide for yourself. Whether or not you can build your own shelter, feed and clothe your family, and tend to simple health remedies. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. It is already turning. Read about those who spoked it. Relearn their lessons and your own historical heritage. Maybe 2012 is just a Mayan myth. Maybe it's not. Take a look at the world without WalMart, or cities, or a stock market.
Southern Wisdom
You have to be from the South to appreciate this book, and be a person who truly loves mountain lore, living and wisdom. I gave this as gifts to two special men - our "grandpa" who grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina and lived this life. Also gave it to a younger southern man who is an avid hunter and rugged outdoorsman, and both of them really loved reading these stories and "how-to's"....
Great book
Love this book
Love the Foxfire Books
How could you not rate a Foxfire book with 5 stars? The stories are so interesting with so much valuable information. I especially appreciate that the original wording of the people interviewed was unchanged. What a shame that we don't have more publications like Foxfire; the knowledge gained and documented from our elders- priceless resources of entertaining, enchanting stories and wisdom.
Description inaccurate
I purchased this book for my grandson and was very disappointed of the condition if I had known for a few dollars more I would have bought new. Book had water stains some of the pages were Very dirty and had fingerprints on them.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some parts were obviously useful and informative
This was a very interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some parts were obviously useful and informative; like the cabin building sections. Others were entertaining, bordering on bizar like the home remedies. The story behind the idea of the book and what was achieved through interviewing the older generations was just lovely. A great read!
Best books ever
Best books ever! They explain about how anything and everything was done back in the good ole days. Ive read these books growing up and they never get old! I plan on getting the whole collection they are that good.

i've got nearly all of these. this one was for a friend. too bad schools dont require this type of thing anymore, well, i suppose some may. i got attached to some of the people that were interviewed, it was like i knew them!!
What a treasure!
I am so happy to finally get my hands on this series of books. I wish I had purchased it 30 years ago when I was young and spry! What a treasure.
FANTASTIC SERIES
My son wanted the entire Foxfire collection so I purchased all twelve books that are available. He loves these books. These books are great for "survivalist"-mindset people or for anyone who wants to learn how to become more self sufficient by learning the old-fashioned way things were done before our electrified and electronic-ruled ways took over. Great books.
The Foxfire Book
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to do things the old fashioned way. Very, very informative. I ordered this as a Christmas gift for was husband (it had been on his wish list) and he was thrilled to receive it. I will order the next in the series soon. An excellent buy.
Old information still good in Foxfire book
I make soap. Not much. Just enough for bathing dogs and personal use. I couldn't find my soap recipe, but remembered that it had been featured in an old '60s Foxfire book. Found the book on Amazon and had to buy it for all its references.
It's a Keeper
You won't be sorry!
Homesteaders resource, American folk history staple
Love the series; especially for history buff or homesteaders.
Arrived Damaged
Was excited to get this series and book 1 came damaged. I keep my books nice and neat and was unhappy to see it arrive in this condition!
A fantastic source of information.
A book dedicated to the successful living off the grid.
If you want to be able to do it, look in the book
If you want to be able to do it, look in the book. Mountain living and survival techniques. From butchering to basket weaving, to cabin building and chimneys. It's all there. (there are 3 or 4 of these books in print, each covering different subjects) CHECK YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY FIRST! Good seller, product exactly as described. A+++
Interesting and Informative!
Old school wisdom in this book that is shared in a practical way. This is a wealth of wisdom about how things were done before everything could be bought at Walmart.
Excellent resource for Appalachian mountain culture
The unique perspective of this book is that it is all told through the eyes of those who lived it. I enjoy reading non-fiction that provides first hand accounts. I did not seek out to learn about Appalachian mountain culture (though I did), but was rather fascinated by how the survival techniques, social activities, and spiritual way of life held true in more primitive times and to some degree, still today.
Eye Opening Book
My husband and I are taking steps to simplify our lives and become more self sufficient. This first book in the series is an eye opening look into the lives of a simple time and simple lives. I would recommend it to homesteaders or people looking to simplify their life and be guided and while also learning about how life used to be without modern conveniences.
The knowledge
It’s a must read every one should learn the teachings of this book
Great book for homesteaders and bushcrafters
I had books 1-5 growing up, and loved them. Sure, they lack any real proofreading, but at least someone took the time to record all this information. I know how to cook a possum, build a log cabin, and brew moonshine because of these books! So, I picked this one up for my son so he can begin his own collection and learn some valuable information
Foxfire - Great book for emergency situations
With the economy going the way it is - and people trying to find more ways to save money, eat more healthy foods and cut down on the questionable drugs and sweeteners - The foxfire book series is FULL of interesting and helpful knowledge. I gave my first one away years ago and now I am slowly replacing every one. good book to have in every home.
A Keeper!
This book is great! It is not only very informative, it was fun to read. I recently visited Foxfire in North Georgia and a friend of mine purchased this book there. After getting home and looking through her book, I was kicking myself for not buying it at their gift store. I was glad to see it available on Amazon.
Neat!
Nice book. Has a lot of great info plus some funny old wives tales. Great information for DIY everything outside! We've tried a few things from this book and they turn out great!
Foxfire / new cover / old material covered in interesting way
Great for the home history reference library. You may not need to butcher a hog, but in case you do this book comes with photographs. This is what people used to do before You Tube How to Videos! Enjoyable reading.
Historians and Preppers Alike Will Love These Books
Love the Foxfire Series!
Back to the Basics
Great book for getting started with some survival basics, prepping, and just a good book series to have in any library. Good information and a piece of history my family loves.
She seems to really like it.
It was a gift for a friend. She seems to really like it.
A cheap book and paperback
This book was not worth the purchase. I was disappointed. The pictures were all black and white and somewhat blurry.
Classic
Another in Nerd Heaven category.
Really interesting reading
Purchased for my husband who loves to remeniness about his grandparents and the time he spent with them. This book is full of culture that was handed down from generation's. At my husband's request I purchased 2 of these books for him to give as gifts this Christmas
foxfire books 1,2,3,and4
we have been entering a frienzy of "green" and alternate energy. these are the original surival guides. mother earth news has brought us a long way as well as home power magazine and backwoods home but you can't appriciate how "modern" they are by comparison. back to the future, ney forward to the past to surive and thrive in a troubled world.
Wonderful set of books.
Finally bought all the Foxfire books for myself, having seen them years ago but never owned them. They are fascinating to read, and I bet from time to time you will use something in them for your own. I Love It!
great history book
This is a great book on how things were done in the "old days", with great text and pictures of log cabin building, etc. and the "Aunt Arie" chapter is worth the price of the book alone. The movie "Foxfire" was based on that person.
Stories of mountain living
I purchased this book for my mother of which whom grew up in the NC mountains. The stories remind her of stories her grandparents and parents used to tell. She has thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and I purchased Firefox 2 and 3 for her as a Christmas gift.
Four Stars
great
what we al should know
In just reading the note from the author, I must say this is something we should start in EVERY school. How things used to be done is something we all need to know. From survival tatics to just knowing were we come from. Just wow, what a great book and teaching idea. Thank you

Ok reading, kinda old fashioned.
Practical Guides & Old-time Reminiscences
These classics help any new organic/sustainable living enthusiast who wants to re-learn the skills that enable off-grid living. If you think it's important that we not forget how to make soap without purchasing chemicals at the Walmart, this book is for you.

I love the Foxfire books
I owned all the Foxfire books many years ago and I bought this one for my grandson because he loves the out doors, hunts, fishes, traps, and whether he actually uses much of the information he finds in it I know he is enjoying reading it. I loaned out all mine and I'm seriously considering replacing them for myself. Excellent books, love Amazon.

Some great information from our mountain ancestors. Lots of how to and home remedies

If you read this book, you will be whisked away to a lost time, long forgotten by our fast and busy lifestyle. I'm all for technology improving our lives but this book will make you lament wistfully for our past. I love it!!!
Fascinating collection from the Appalachians
I borrowed Foxfire books from the public library when I was a teen and was fascinated by the wide variety of folklore topics they contained... just good to know, down to heart stuff from a pioneered, Can Do region of our country
Better yet, we know what is in the jar
Going back to some of the old ways, less energy used, less hormones & antibiotics. Better yet, we know what is in the jar.

The archive of the hillbilly way of life
Good Information.
It was written by a high school teacher in Georgia and his students. It has a lot of interviews with old folks from back in the mountains and it has a lot of pictures and drawings. Hunting, preserving, cooking, building, quilting, moonshining, and all that good stuff.

I love the Foxfire books...this volume in particular. It's like opening a time capsule of information, everything from recipes on cooking possum to how to build a still and make moonshine.

Excellent buy for your son or spouse.
He loved it!
Great read
Great read and wonderful colorful stories about simple mountain folk written in the format they actually speak. Full of old folk wisdom and actually explains how to execute some interesting things. Very interesting, easy to read and not a boring moment from cover to cover. A good book also for those who like to read and relax but don't have the time to sit down and follow a detailed story line because it's filled with stories of many different lengths. You can put it down and pick it up a month later and not be lost. Ummm, also great for the oval office :)
I love the whole series!
I am from the Appalachian mountains. I am collecting these books to hand down to my kids. This is definately the perfect way to preserve your roots. I HIGHLY reccomend the whole series. Don't let the old ways die!

Awesome book with tons of useful information. I had this book years ago and decided I needed it in my life again.

Great to read this again
I first read the Foxfire books about 25-30 years ago, picked this one up again and found that I enjoyed it even more as an adult. Reading about the skills that were a daily part of life, things that are lost in today's hectic modern day lifestyle in the city. It may not have seemed simpler to the folks that lived it, but sure seems like a simpler life to me.
An OLDIE but a GOODIE!
Many times over the past 40 years, I read my friends copy of this first book in the FOXFIRE series. I think it was time to buy my own copy.
Excellent book
Given as a gift and very well received. It's good to know how to in this day and age.
Five Stars
Well written and easy to read. A look into the past told through interesting stories.
Lost knowledge from early Appalachian settlers
Interesting reading, although the first few chapters are mainly why this magazine was started.

Can't beat this one!
All homes should have this book in their library. Some might even question the reality of it, but it's all true-grit stuff!
always good
always treasure this series. I have often gifted this book and appreciate the value of oral histories, wish others did also.
Excellent Books
I'm thrilled with these books. My husband is a skilled woodcarver and a master gardener. He has looked for these books everywhere. This is the only place that I have found them all in one place. Also, they are in excellent or new condition.
If your into how the old timers got things done then this book is for you.
I can't say enough good stuff about this book. It's just a great example of young people taking on the task (responsibility) of keeping knowledge alive. It's got humor and lots of knowledge. I find myself thinking about stuff from this book on a regular basis. Maybe that's because I watch these survivor shows that are prolific now and always find myself thinking how these old timers took care of business with very little more in their favor than most these people. Hint they made their own tools. How to build cabins, stone fire places, make soap, baskets, chairs, stills, and how to make simple tools. Just a fun book.
Lots of knowledge from the old days
Bought this for a friend who is moving to the Country, he can't say enough good things about it.
Great reference
This is a great reference. I can't wait for the apocolypse so I can butcher a hog. Just kidding but it really is a great book.
BACK TO REALITY
BOUGHT THIS FOR A FRIEND, HE WANTS TO GO BACK & LIVE IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS HE SAID
foxfire
I am glad that I heard about this book. Good information. It is nice3 to see what other people use to do with hardly anything.
Foxfire Book
I chose a 4 star rating because the books are in great condition, they came in a timely manner and I was surprised at the size of the book. I was thinking this was a smaller, manual and not a thick book! I was skimming through and it seemed to have great information. I am gifting this, that is why I have not read it, as of yet. If I read it I would have probably rated this as a 5 star item. :) The book covers many different topics, there are images and first hand accounts that were documented throughout the book. The images are in black-and-white.

Lost the original, love the storys

I have lived in the mountains, had pig roast and have done many craft ideas in my life from reading this book. All three of the Foxfire books are a set that I am happy to have again.

Great book. Easy and fun to read. Glad someone is recording history such as this. They have some very funny moonshining tales in there too. Out of all the foxfire books, I bought only this one.
