Foxfire 3, looking for old mountain banjos

These books were popular back in the 70s and I went hunting for the third volume because of an article on old Mountain banjos and how to build them. It was very helpful, but what I really enjoyed about the book were the very personal stories about the people of Appalachia. It's an added bonus. The articles are both how to pieces, and cultivate history of the region. Fun and interesting to read. My ancestors were from these mountains, too. The book gave me some insight on how they lived. Great read. And if I ever want to tan a groundhog hide , I know hoe to do it!😬

FANTASTIC SERIES

My son wanted the entire Foxfire collection so I purchased all of the books from Amazon. He has read all of the books now and while some of the volumes he said did not have much practical instructional information he still enjoyed reading them immensely if just for the story aspect. These books are great for anyone who loves to read about old-fashioned ways of living before modern conveniences were commonplace or for someone who wants to learn how many things were done before things were so readily available. These books would be great for anyone who is of the "survivalist" mindset or anyone who just wants to learn to be more self sufficient.

A great book!

I love the Foxfire series of books. I'm slowly adding to my collection of them that was started as a gift from a family member.

A very good read

We purchased Foxfire volumes 1-12 in a single purchase and are very pleased. If one is looking to learn skills from the "old school," then this series is a good one to purchase. Whether searching for how to build a log cabin the good, old-school way, learning how to make a natural bed of hay, stitching, or soap-making, this series will be valuable to you. The directions are good, and in many cases there are detailed photos or drawings that accompany the instructions being given. A good read. Worth the money if you are interested in learning many skills that are quickly being lost from generations past.

Foxfire 3: Animal Care

My mom had these in NC when I visited her years ago. I wanted my own set and found all the volums that I needed right here on Amazon.com at real great prices, I have 5 volums now. These are great books well written, they got plenty of things to read and do if your a country type man fending for himself. If our economy ever collapses, you'll need these to learn how to do stuff to stay alive and take care of your family... plus they're great reading.....!

Foxfire books are an absolute must have

I am working on collecting the whole collection in its original covers for myself and my daughter. My Dad had the whole series and I loved these books. I'm slowly building up. They are very hard to find so I purchase when I find them.

Great American History

The whole Foxfire experience is marvelous. Just think about that teacher who assigned these mountain children the joyful task of gathering local history of the way the old folks lived. The resulting books have been printed/reprinted/loved/appreciated for several decades now. I needed this one to authenticate a story I was writing about how my grandparents lived, and the Foxfire book(s) do just that. They are all classics, and this one is a real treasure.

Great Book

Have always loved these books!!!

Excellent book series

excellent book series

another great Foxfire book!

I am so glad that these people took the time to interview and document these stories and people and their way of life. It would have been a shame to have all of this history and knowledge go to waste.

1in a series of important data

This is such a good book for anyone and especially homesteaders, preppers or scouts.

Foxfire 3, paperback

I've been a Foxfire reader since late 70s but always checked 'em out from the library. My own library has over 500 books in it so I have to be careful about space. I bought this for my library, though, because it has a rather lengthy section about homemade banjos & I wanted to build one. I read and reread that many times before deciding I'd be better off getting a used store-bought banjo, which I did - thanks Foxfire. The other articles were good too as is always the case with the Foxfire series.

Good reading

Bought as a used book. Ok condition. Good reading. I'd love to have other books in the series.

Knowing basic skills

With the way things are looking, we're making sure we know how to do 'basic' things. We noticed this book, and ordered it to see if it would be something we want in our how-to reference library; it is, and we're ordering the rest of the set. A good read, although we may not try all the concepts covered, it was interesting to learn!

The Foxfire series is part of your must have collection

Part of your must have collection of traditional living methods from the past

Very Earthy Down Home Info

If you enjoy folkways and old time techniques around the homestead you will enjoy these books. Many useful techniques for homesteading are covered, techniques and instructions you can readily use at your home. A fun read. I have enjoyed all the Firefox books I have read to date.

Real Mountain Living

I purchased this book along with Foxfire 2 as a gift for my mother. I bought the first book from Amazon a few months back and she absolutely loved it. Growing up in the mountains of NC in the 60's the stories bring back so many memories of stories from her grandparents. True classics!

how to book

This is a how to book. This book is expcially popular with people from the 1970's and for people who want to learn the old ways of doing things and living off the grid. So yes even though these books are so dated they are important and I wish I could buy them all.

Best of Appalacia

If you love the culture of Appalachia as I do these Foxfire books are a must read! They are full of practical advice with details of how to make moonshine, banjos, or build a log cabin. . I love the "down home" persona of all these long time mountain dwellers. Just a pure, simple way of life.

Lets learn!

Ordered this book after reading other reviews and am so glad I did. The book covers so much and is easy to put to use.

Purchased as a Gift

I own volumes 1 through 6, so I purchased Volumes 1, 2, and 3 for my son and his family. They are very well written, and filled not only with good information but also tons of Country humor. Great job!

Foxfire 3, A Great Study in past life

this series covers animal care, banjos and dulcimers, wild plant foods, butter churns, ginseng and more. All of the foxfire books have a similar format: interviews with elders who practice a specific handicraft. Get them all, they are great.

Knowledge at your Fingertips

Great series of books with knowledge that our forefathers had and used daily. I feel with the way our government is spending we will fall into a chaotic world and need to return to the old ways to survive.

book for husband

My husband loves this series of books and I just can't believe how cheap they are here compared with other sites and bookstores.

Another great Foxfire Book!

The Foxfire books are a treasure for the interviews with real people and how they made do in times gone by. Too much of this knowledge has been lost as this generation leaves this world. These are skills that we should know because you never know what the future will bring.

We are slowly losing these things that have been passed down for centuries and that is sad. Great books all around.

This series depicts the culture of the Appalachian so well. It is a reminder of the hardships that our ancestors as well as the people still of this region endured then and now.

Slowly building up my collection of these great books. Always full of good information and entertaining stories. Definately good to know info within.

Foxfire 3

I got this book wanting to learn more about banjo building, but I learned so much more. It is not really a how to book. It's more about the people and their way of life. Every page is full of information and great stories. After reading this I think I'm gonna try my hand at huntin' some ginseng and maybe build a purple martin bird house out of some gourds to control the bugs in my backyard. If you are interested in the way life was before t.v. and cell phones ruined everything, you should definitely get this book.

GREAT BOOK

A LOT OF GOOD READIND AND THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THE KIDS TO HAVE SO FUN TO PAST SO TIME.

Five Stars

Last Christmas I bought the Foxfire 2 book as a gift for him. And he loved it! After he gave a very strong hint that he would like more Foxfires. Well, needless to say when his birthday came around...Another Foxfire for him! He was so pleased.

Information you cannot easily get anywhere else.

Finally bought all the Foxfire books for myself, having seen them years ago but never owned them. They are fascinating to read, and I bet from time to time you will use something in them for your own. I Love It!

Three Stars

Not much useful information.

Was not pleased with this item.

Was advertisied as good condition, may have even said excellent. Stated it was like new. The actually book was in very bad condition and nearly falling apart. The pages in it were loose and ready to come out. I called your customer service dept. before placing the order to seek help in making my selection and this is what they recommended.

Sun baked book

This book was supposed to bee in " good" condition . The binding was so brittle it broke pages loosened and extremely baked by the sun.

WE OWE THESE PEOPLE A LOT

I own, read and use almost all of the Foxfire books. Actually, we owe both the Foxfire people and we certainly owe the characters of a gone generation. This work, Volume III, is like the others. A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. Do be warned though, as one reviewer has pointed out, these are not step by step "how to do it" books. But This is sort a good thing as the how to books out there are sort of a dime a dozen any more. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, this addresses many of the old forgotten skills and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.
