The Anonymous Press Study Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous (Black)

So, overall I LOVE this book. Pros: There's SO much room for notes. I love love love that! It's really great quality! The original manuscript in the back is awesome and I love the dictionary and the word index. Cons : They took out the preface. Which is sad. I added a copy into the blank cover section. So i'll make it work. Also it has the forward but took out the forward to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th edition. Ok I can live without those I suppose but when you get to the doctor's opinion the page numbers don't line up to the original text as you can see in the picture which as you see in my pictures I crossed out and kept the original numbering. I think the book is worth those defects because you can just have a copy of the preface Andre number the doctor's opinion. And by the time you get to Bill's story page one the page numbers are back on track to the original. Not perfect but if you are a big note-taker like I am this book is for you and worth the discrepancies.

I cannot say enough good things about this book, or stress its importance enough if you are interested in working your 12 Step Program of Recovery the way our founders did! I am a prolific note taker, so the note pages are perfect for me. The ribbons make it easy for me to find the start and end points each week for the BB Study Group that we chair. Filled with history of our program, footnotes, dictionary, glossary, as well as the Original Manuscript written by Bill W., completely unaltered. We chair 2 meeting per week, our BB Study, as well as a 12 Steps and 12 Traditions meeting, (For that, we use the "Original 1946 Edition-Little Red Book" for the same reason, in our meetings, we want to know how the founders worked the Program that enabled them to say "...we who have RECOVERED" and caused them to see 75-100% recovery rates, as compared to the dismal 8% recovery rates reported by the General Service Offices for AA today. The founders knew, in order to recover from a "hopeless state of mind and body", they needed to recognize and accept that their disease had placed them "beyond human aid" and that a vital spiritual experience was the only thing that could restore them to sanity and remove the compulsion and obsession to drink." If you are a serious student of the Big Book, an old timer, or a new comer, this book is for you! And to be able to purchase such a high quality, leather bound volume at such a remarkable price, it a real find!

This is a fabulous new version of the big book! I have seen Alanon books with word glossaries and its tremendouly useful so I was stoked to find the big book version. (Wish they made a 12&12 as such) as this is a new book I am only giving four stars because I have a few suggestions- add a ribbon for page marking, add thumbtabs for the different versions- also would be amazing to include study guide notes as opposed to the original text in the back since the new version in the front already notates the differences.

I bought this for a sponsee of mine. I really love this book because it gives you extra pages to write on and express your emotions. I like to go in depth into what each chapter is about what what each word means. Its important to really go thru these chapters and express what exactly you are getting out of these chapters and how you are going to grow. This book is the perfect size. You can bring it anywhere. Perfect for meetings as well.

The Big Book of A.A. has been through 4 revisions in the official printed edition. This book goes back to the very early days when the material was first typed up and submitted for review. This book even includes the typographical errors and small word changes that were fixed for the First official edition. Each edition has some of the previous personal stories with some new ones. So even if you have read most of the personal stories in the first 4 editions, you'll still find some that you haven't seen yet in this volume. My only real complaint is that the print is small in this book and my vision isn't as sharp as it was years ago. So if they ever print another version of this, please make the print bigger.

I bought this to use for only sponsorship. The fact that every page has a corresponding notes page is fabulous for writing in things to bring up in doing step work with sponsees. I didn't get the hard cover version, because it is made with leather and I am vegan, but I would have preferred a hard cover version I could have because it would last longer than this soft cover. I have to buy a cover that will help protect this one. However, it is not likely to get taken by accident in a book study meeting since it is red, so that's good. And the quality of the book is great. The price is really great.

The book I received wasn't brand new like I expected (there was writing on the inside of the book, which that is not necessarily a good or bad thing) but I did want brand new.. All the different AA materials get confusing so I ordered @ risk - prompt shipping. It is fine print so if you have trouble reading small print (like I do) this may not be the book for you. **This is not the sellers fault, this is mine for not asking questions before buying**

This edition is wonderful. Has word glossary in the back of the book with original copy of big book. On every other page there blank page for notes. Easy read.. highly recommend this book... one thing i was hoping for was 12 step prayers to be included but they are not.. having trouble finding copy with 12 steps prayers. Overall this book is Awesome...

I have been in recovery for many years, had my share of slips and mishaps, and read the Big Book a lot. I have recently gotten sober again (and I pray for the last time in this life) and when I dug up my old Big Book I wondered if maybe there was something a little nicer out there. So I came to Amazon and found this edition and knew I had to have it. The binding on most of the A.A. literature is usually pretty cheap and doesn't put up with hours and hours of reading and study. This edition is beautiful. The binding is excellent and the layout is excellent. Easy to read and with every page having it's very own lined page opposite it for notes, it is quite a resource for anyone serious about their recovery and serious about studying. The only possible complaint I would have is that the personal stories have been omitted. I think they could have maybe left out the origional text in the back of the book and included at least some of the more recent personal stories. However, I know I will get a lot of use out of this version and it is an excellent value for the money.

A friend of mine has had a copy for a number of years. Finally after wanting to get more from my study meetings I decided to purchase this book. A great price, and cheaper to purchase than some conference approved big books, if your looking to join this way of life and don't have a big book I highly suggest this book, if you have been around for years, or decades, once again I highly suggest this book to get more from your study.

It’s a lot smaller than I thought it would be and the cover is mangled, scratches and dents. I actually thought it was used when I took it out of the package. The lined pages have ink spots on them

I did not like what I ordered, as its not Alcoholics Anonymous. Its the rough manuscript with a very flawed layout. I thought i would be getting a nice alcoholics anonymous big book 4th edition, layed out for easy study, this is not the case with this. It does have a usefull glossary and index.

Awesome book for anyone needing added guideance through their self discovery process and the twelve steps. You will get the guideance needed to successfully navigate all twelve steps and especially helpful for your fourth step work. Contains worksheets that help demystify the fourth step work.

In my area, Cape Cod, we have many male, female, and co-ed Big Book step study groups. I had never run across a Big Book so wonderfully tailored to these meetings. As part of going through the step process we begin by reading through the book with a sponsor making notes and getting definitions of any unclear words. After showing it around to others, many people have already ordered books for themselves. A great book!

I love the original manuscript. I don't use the front study edition very often, but for some having both editions in one book is use full, especially with the lined pages for your notes. I cant say enough about this book since i sincerely believe that God spoke to me personally through the original manuscript. This back grey pages it is the original which is wrote in first person as Bill and the other original members had put their solution on paper for us and then later called Alcoholics anonymous. It helped me more than the other revised editions, being wrote in first person. In the beginning of my sobriety, I thought I was different and the "we" thing applied to everyone else in the room. I bought this book for a new found friend for a Christmas gift, and I am sure she will enjoy everything it has to offer us addicts and alcoholics.

I absolutely love this Big Book. I do wish they had one like this that had all of the appendices and the stories in the back. This one doesn't have Appendix III and doesn't have the stories. It does have a great glossary though.

Great quality, layout, and reference features. I take this book with me to every study group I attend as well as for my own personal research. The ruled pages which face each printed page is all I wanted when I purchased this book, but the references, tabbed formats, original Big Book appendix, index, etc., encourage my to dive even deeper into my studies. I have bought at least 75 of these to give away. I follows the large size Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous page for page. The only draw back is that it doesn't have the personal stories. Great to carry in a pocket or purse/

The product has quality, black padded covers with gold gilded font on the spine only. I received the book in fine order, however, after reading for awhile, I noticed that only pages 1-181 were intact. Pages 182-568 were missing!!?? Went from Chapter 17 "The Doctor's Nightmare" to 2 pages on 568 of "Spiritual Experience"

This is a good read. Really like it. I dinged it a star, perhaps unfairly, because I was hoping it was same size as AA book so it would fit in my holders. It is larger.

Wonderful, great quality, and so useful I never go anywhere without it! When I started the Big Book Awakening step study I knew I had to get this study edition version of the big book because it is so nice to be able to write all the notes and definitions on the lined pages located (conveniently) opposite each page. I also love that the original manuscript is included as well. A must have for any programmer, can I say!

Hard covers great and the notes section is so awesome. Just wish it had the whole big book not just firdt 164 pages. And the dictionary is not great compared to official big book dictionary. But i love it.

A great help studying the big book

Used it to highlight and summarize each page of the 164, which it is literally perfect for. The original manuscript in the back is also quite nifty.

As a person in recovery for some time, I found this book a real treasure. Nothing is added or taken away from the first part of the Big Book but it is presented with a concordance, glossary and a space for notes. Having gone through numerous Big Books in study meetings and just giving them away, this one is a real treasure for me. Some historical notes and a copy of the original manuscript make it a must for us AA History fans. Keep coming back to this one!

Delightful version of the Big Book that arrived on time and is helpful in studying. If I had thought it through I might have bought the leather cover because I will want this book to last a long time and the paperback cover probably won't last (it is good quality just the amount of use it will get.)

This is exactly what I was looking for. I am being mentored by another alcoholic and he is walking through the Big Book again. Even though I have 11 years, I have never done study like this before where I am highlighting words and dissecting every sentence. It's a tedious process but it's a reminder to me that I am an alcoholic and I have a program of recovery that has saved my life so many times over that I can't even count.

Always wanted a copy of theFirst edition

So far it is durable, well built, compared to the Big Book it has lots of room to write. I prefeer the smaller size Big Book in meetngs, the same size Big Book at home for reading stories, and this one as a workbook/studybook.

Great book use all the time with my study group

This edition is great for studying the big book of A.A. It has a nice little dicionary in the back which I refer to often. And I love that it has lined pages for me to make notations!

This study edition is extremely useful. I love having the blank page for every page of text. It provides an organized way of jotting down notes in their proper place. It will never replace my 4th edition that has been through hell and back with me (coffee stains, duct tape and illegible notes on the margins of every page!) but it has some things that the 4th edition cant boast; A copy of the original manuscript, a partial dictionary (very useful for words that have a different meaning today) and a word/phrase reference (want to find where the word recovered is mentioned? or spiritual experience? look it up! 90 in 90?....oh wait, that was NEVER in the big book!). This book also has all the stories from the first edition. One AWESOME deal for $17.00!! Buy a few and give them away, they are a great gift for you BB thumping friends!

On 12 step sites this same book is almost $50.00. It is a beautiful leather bound book with space to make notes. I purchased them as anniversary gifts for friends in recovery. They are treasured by everyone who receives one.

I thought id like it better , nothing wrong with it its really nice .

This is a wonderful edition, beautifully bound and printed on good quality paper. Ample space is provided for the reader to make notes without marking the text. An added bonus is that it contains the original manuscript of the Big Book that was distributed to friends and colleagues of the AA Founders before the First Edition was printed in 1938. I find this helpful in understanding the original thoughts and intentions of the writers in describing the program of action that leads to recovery. The Big Book was written as a manual of instructions for people at a time when there were not widespread meetings that people could get to. It contains everything a person needs to grasp the fundamental nature of the problem, namely lack of power or powerlessness, and to make and maintain contact with a higher power by following the design for living set out in these pages. The Twelve Steps are a foundation for living in the fourth dimension of existence, namely the world of the spirit, and the Big Book gives the reader clear cut directions to practise them. What's on offer here is more than relief from alcoholism and other addictions, wonderful as that it is. The Big Book also provides a key that opens the door to a life beyond your wildest dreams!

I have been sober and studying the BB for 15 years I absolutely love this Big Book, The index is awesome the study note pages are great also.

I purchased this book because I joined a Big Book study group. The pages are thicker than other big books which enable me to highlight pertinet information without the highlighter bleeding through. The lined page next to each page of text lets me write notes right in the book, without having to interfere with the text. I also enjoy the paragraph reference numbers as well as the built in dictionary. In my opinion; this was money well spent!

Books received quickly, in excellent condition at a very modest price. Was unable to find locally-was informed locally that it was out of print. Reference individual paid much more for theirs than I did. no problems with vendor. Books were exactly what I expected.

I like the fact that there are pages for notes except that there could be more information in the book.The twelve traditions are not in the book unless I am missing them.

It's okay. It is interesting to see a version of the original manuscript. Numbering the text for easier reference is only good if everyone with whom you are discussing the text is using this book. In fact, this book may not be well suited for a book study, since generally you need the latest edition with the most up-to-date stories. Probably I would suggest that you just buy the Big Book and look up words for meaning in an online dictionary.

Every other page is blank so that you can take notes if you are in a study group. I put mine aside for a while and need to pick it back up to take to my Big Book study meetings. The only draw back is you will have die hard members clucking over the fact that it is not published by World Service and therefore is not AA approved literature. Normally, I would agree with that, but I love having the ability to take abundant notes on the blank pages.

This is now my go to Big Book. Very useful appendix, glossary, and topic index

This book is fantastic. It provides a blank page for every page of text in the first 164 pages of the Big Book. The space allows you to add your own notes relevant to the preceding page of text. It's beautifully bound and is in large print.

Good quality

This is a perfect study guide for me. I can write down my most important take-aways as I ready them, take notes as I review the reading with my sponsor, and use the circa 1939 dictionary to get at the real intended meaning of some of the more difficult words. The inclusion of the 2 indicies (by topic and by word) is very handy. I must also add that having the original uneditted manuscript is incredibly valuable. I never realized how much the editors toned down the first edition. It is like Bill W told me, for example, that I should either reread the book again or throw it away but the editors decided not to allow him to tell me this (see page 27, paragraph 60.2 of the manuscript). The added emphasis is so helpful! I highly recommend this study aid.

My sponsor used this edition and suggested I do the same as I start to work with others. The blank page is great for note taking and the binding seems pretty solid

I think that it's a good idea that it have the Entire Original Manuscript including the stories, because I can understand better the origin of the book. I think it's a good idea that have a white pages to write our thoughts.

I purchased this book because I imagined that it might have some annotations to help understand the context of the fist 164 pages in the Big Book. I should have read the description more carefully because the only thing this book offered was a lined page after each page in the book for you to write down your own notes so I was disappointed. Anonymous Press has provided a great tool to motivate recovering alcoholics to actually study the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. This attractive leather-bound book has indexes, footnotes, and journaling pages that allow readers to take notes. It encourages those who are lax about studying their Big Books to knuckle down. However, the text of the Big Book as it appears in this volume is still largely unchanged since the original was published in 1939. It's a challenge for modern readers--especially those with limited reading skills. Another excellent study aid sold by Amazon is the EZ Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, an accurate translation that uses contemporary, reader-friendly, nonsexist language. Recently published as both a paperback and e-book, it's about the same length as the original but is written in more casual, easily understood prose. The narrative follows that of the original paragraph by paragraph without loss of content.

This is the coolest edition of the Big Book that I've seen yet. It is priced right.($2 less than an AA BB) Has the original manuscript and a glossary/dictionary. The right hand pages are lined for notes. The Anonymous Press is an outfit dedicated to spreading the message. Not making money. They also have a very cool mini edition (pocket size) but Amazon doesn't carry them. I wish they would. If you need a Big Book try this one. There is also a reproduction edition of the First edition available from Amazon. Also a leather bound edition that is even more cool, but costs about $15. I have all four and have purchased some additional coppies to give as gifts. If you know a Big Book thumper, they will love this edition. Nice aniversary gift that will be eye catching when you bring it to a meeting. Put the money you save in the basket and everybody is a winner!

I have purchased many Big Books over the years. This is my third purchase of the Anonymous Press Study Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous. I use the Big Books myself and I give them away to friends. This purchase is for me. I am in a new study and having fresh pages to highlight and underline words and write definitions is delightful. This book is absolutely elegant. It is leather bound and the pages are gilded in gold. I take it with me proudly.

This book is great for the alcoholic who wants to learn more about the history of the AA Big Book while following the AA Big Book. This book shows where the wording has changed from the first edition and has the exact reproduction of the 1938 Original Manuscript of Alcoholics Anonymous. It also has a dictionary (circa 1937) with the definitions as they would have been used in the original manuscript. It also has a word index which shows the page number and paragraph where an instance of a word occurs. There is also a Subject Index (ex: page/paragraph where the subject "Faith without works is dead" occurs). The Personal Stories from 1938 provide good reading. Highly recommended for additional study of the Big Book.
