Wasted Potential
When "Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia" was delayed for about a year, I thought it was for necessary quality assurance editing after Dark Horse's somewhat sketchy "The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts" guide. Sadly, my expectations were far from met. Instead of a legitimate translation of the original Japanese text by authoritative representatives, the hired localizers (or at least one of them known to do this proudly) saw fit to unprofessionally rip entire lines from the unofficial Super Mario Wiki at a specific point in time and not bother to fact-check any of it; the contributors even remain uncredited as their original work is blatantly profited off of, which violates the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. This is in spite of certain articles having a very conspicuous disclaimer at the top of the page warning all readers that the title consists of an invented fan-made name in the event of proper English-language references being absent. It's not simply one or two minor isolated instances that can be swiftly overlooked - the book is completely rife with amateurish leftovers of incorrect or misleading information that has since been cleaned up by dedicated fans on said wiki well within the past year, not to mention a whole slew of internal inconsistencies that no doubt resulted from clashing actual official details with totally unauthorized ones. It makes you wonder what exactly was going on during the year it took for this book to get published. In an ideal world, Nintendo would recall this poor product they licensed and sold, issue an apology, and get their A-team to work on a revised edition from scratch, pronto. It's an insult to the fanbase of such an iconic video game mascot and a truly disappointing fate for what should have been the definitive resource on all things Mario.
Beautiful book, even with it's flaws
Dark Horse's translation, evidently, uses conjectural/untranslated names for objects as listed on Super Mario Wiki. People working on the translation for this book freely admit to using Wiki to assist with translations. I myself did not purchase this book with the intention of using it has a reference guide but to add to my collection of Nintendo books and guides. Yes, this is very unfortunate and seemingly sloppy regardless considering the resources at their disposal. Despite that and it's flaws, the book is still stunning. I have no regrets with this purchase. It was shipped and packaged as Darkhorse does with it's Limited or Deluxe Editions. I've learned standard editions don't get the same packaging treated and as a result I've received a lot of damaged books. The Question Mark Box slipcase is embossed on the front only but still looks and feels amazing. The slipcase is sturdy and made with thick material. The book itself has a good solid weight to it but not what I would call heavy. I received a 1-Up cover accented with holofoil that shines and shimmers in the light. Once you open the book you're greeted with rich, bright colors. And blue edge pages packed with 30 years of decent Mario nostalgia. I was taken back by how much information they managed to pack into one book and arranged as well as it. Sadly the book in not a complete history of Mario, which is disappointing. There is a section towards the back of the book that mentions games like Mario Kart, Mario Paint, etc. I think most people expected ALL THINGS MARIO, which this is not. While the book itself is the same size compared to other Dark Horse books. The slipcase on the other hand is completely square with an insert in the back so the book sits in the case seamlessly. Unfortunately it protrudes out on my shelf so a little creativity was needed. What I ended up doing was putting the book itself with my other Dark Horse books, the slipcase went on another shelf facing out. The embossing on the front looks great displayed on my shelf this way.
30 years of nostalgia!
Just received my copy in the mail today after preordering way back in February. The book arrived in good condition. Ive had some trouble in the years past with the Legend of Zelda series which came a bit dinged up. But to my surprised it was in good condition! The pages are really thick and great quality. The color is done nicely and should really hold up over time when referencing from it over the years of use. These kinds of books are perfect to pick up and flip through in short bursts like during commercials on tv or just passing time or just remembering your first time playing all these games as a kid with the pictures and levels! The content is pretty in-depth. Each game goes by in order of the game's release. Starting with Super Mario Bros and ending with Super Mario 3D World. They go through the main characters first and then the enemies you encounter throughout that specific game. They have page of all the worlds and courses in order that you play through along with Items, obstacles, and power up break downs. It's a pretty awesome book to add to your video game collection!
Great read w kids
I'm not a professional Mario-book-reviewer or anything, not a ravenous semi-pro gamer, and I paid full price for my copy of this book. That said, I think it's great! I bought it to read with my boys, ages 6, 4 and 2 and for that it is perfect. Full color, full page graphics. Thick pages. Info is in small tidbits covering many aspects of all the games. Each game gets a section full of art and tips and there are sections dedicated to the differences in the game art over the years. It has inspired us to pull out games we haven't played in 20 years and let the boys give them a go. We buy all the Mario texts and this one is my 4 year old's favorite.
Very nice book, except it was damaged both times I took it out of the box.
The book is solid, full of information, colorful pictures and would be a nice item added to the collection of other similar books, except it was damaged when I received it, a part of the cover was peeled. So I returned it for another, and the same thing, except this time it is a bigger "scrape" in the cover of the book.
Super Mario Anthology
It's a very beautiful book but it is less of an ecyclopedia than an anthology. First of all it only covers the 17 games in the main Super Mario Bros series, so no Mario Party or Mario Kart games. Even the original Mario Bros. game gets hardly a mention. Secondly, the book is not arranged alphabetically as an encyclopedia would be, but is instead entries are grouped by game then further broken down by characters, enemies, and (oddly together) items and obstacles. The main detraction though is the inconsistent font size. Pages range from 6 entries on a page to over 60. As a result he typeset on some of the pages varies from very difficult to read without squinting all the way up to the top of the eye chart. It's an overall decent book that is thorough with what it covers but could have benefited from the eye of an experienced layout designer.
Not An Encyclopedia!
This isn't really what I had hoped. I thought it would be, well, and encyclopedia (crazy, right?), like the Mario Wiki with interesting entries on different types of Goombas, et cetera. It's not that at all. Instead, the book is divided into several chapters, each which focuses on one game from the Mario universe. Each chapter is laid out exactly the same, covering the game's story (reprinted verbatim from the game instruction manuals), the power-ups, the enemies, items, and worlds. There are a lot of screenshots, but they are extremely small and not always well-chosen. Descriptions are placed next to each screenshot that also seem to be taken directly from instruction manuals. Really, what this is is a compendium of instruction manuals for virtually all Mario games, with really tiny screensots. That was not what I wanted at all.
Disappointing: only for folks who are brand new to Mario games.
This read is kind of disappointing. It is an encyclopedia, in that it just lays out all of the basic information for every core Super Mario game... but don't expect anything more. There's no inside information on the making of the games or characters, from the designers themselves. There's no original material. And it stops in the Wii U era. Don't expect any information on Super Mario Odyssey, or ANY of the spin-offs in the last 30 years including Mario Kart, Yoshi's Island, Wario Land, Donkey Kong Country, etc. Recommended only to folks that are new to Mario and want a general overview of his past games that they've never played.
Mine Came Damaged.
Not the first time (and doubt it will be the last) a collector's item came damaged from Amazon. Great book (despite the awkward big square on a bookshelf look... would probably fit better with a record collection) but really disappointed that my slipcover came with a weird and funky raised bump (as shown in the picture). I called Amazon Customer Service and was told no replacement was available and was only refunded $15. ....Well if no replacement is available of course I'd rather have this than nothing but as a collector this is extremely frustrating. The book itself is awesome and looks great. Just wish mine didn't come defective/damaged.
Very Disappointing
When I saw this book come up, I had high hopes of previously unseen artwork, storylines, and more. I remembered how awesome the Mario Mania Player's Guide from Nintendo Power was and thought surely this will be an amazing collection. I was completely wrong as this is nothing more than a listing of pictures and names of the various characters from each game, some layouts of the levels (like an abbreviated strategy guide, nothing elaborate). This was a great opportunity wasted, especially with the original $70 pricetag. This book is a complete rip-off at that price, it's barely worth $20. It only got 2 stars due to the coverage of the enemies.

Detailed overview of every mainline Mario game up to Super Mario 3D World. No Waluigi.
No Mario fan from 30 years ago or 3 years ago will be able to resist taking a stroll through this enticing tome. Nice hard cover, thick colorful pages with illustrations and descriptions from each game's original instruction manual. You'll see the power ups and enemies from every game in full detail, as well as a run down of each level. Not as detailed as a full on strategy guide, but plenty informative to take a nice nostalgic dive. I'm surprised this book is only around 20 dollars. At that price, it'd be great for any game room or book shelf. You may say, why would I need this book when I have all the games at my fingertips? Well, it's something fun you can go through with the kids, I imagine especially so if they aren't familiar with all the older Mario titles. Highly recommend this one!
Lacking Context and Quality
Not as nice as I expected - content really didn't excite me as it focused on characters/ items instead of history of the individual game. If you own instruction manuals for the games they are pretty much copied and pasted into the text of the book. I was a little disappointed.
All encompassing work on Mario Bros.
This was $60 at Barnes and Noble!! Thanks Amazon for pricing this like you did. My daughter got it for Christmas and LOVES it. We regularly look at it together. Beautifully assembled. Colorful and THOROUGH history of Mario Brothers. Fun for me (41 yrs old) to revisit games like the Mario World for the original Game Boy.
Perfect For Mario Die-Hards
If you're a Mario die-hard, here's a great book for you! Plenty of information about all of Mario's many mainstream adventures, from his first 8-bit adventure on the NES all the way up to his adventures in New Super Mario Bros. U. It was nice to see all of the previous games put in detail here with stuff like enemies and worlds and such, but I don't know what more I expected I felt I didn't get... It's probably just me. If you or anybody you know is a mega Mario fan, this is a GREAT book they would like!
Great Catalogue, But Nothing Too New
Very good, extensive catalogue of the series’ history, but I wish there was more information that we haven’t seen before. It’s also out of date, considering Mario Odyssey released before this was localized in English. I would love to see more concept art and design work, behind-the-scenes info, and maybe some more creative features. Since the Mario series is very fluid in terms of its lore, I think it would be a cool twist to see several employees’ different versions of what a Mario timeline could look like. Closest thing we get here is a release history of the main-series titles, which isn’t super exciting. Other than that, it’s well-made with sturdy binding and a pleasing interior aesthetic, but it never really goes that extra mile that the Mario series is known for.
An Outstanding Mario Resource
As a purchase for my son, I wanted him to have the hardcover vasrion rather than the paperback version that he saw at a book sale in 🏫. I was impressed with the breadth of information with which this guide provided him, and as a lifelong player of all things Nintendo, I was doubly impressed with the material and the fact that it was till available in hardcover at a decent price. Looking forward to purchasing more of these in the future.
For every Mario Fan
I wouldn't say you need to own this to be become a Mario fan, but I would say this is for every Mario fan. This book is jam packed with content and really go into the right amount of detail for each main series game. With none left out. All the big Mario platformers are there with even some like Super Mario Land. This book really does it. Also, it's way bigger than I thought it would be. Like really big. This is literally a documentary of Mario games with some spin off games listed in here too. I say picked it up if you're a Mario fan. I'm a proud Mario fan and I'm happy that I own this. I'll forever be a fan of Super Mario. Let's a go! :)
Great for collectors, questionable for Waluigi fans
A collectors’ item for sure. Very detailed and top quality. Had to take one star away because it literally never mentions Waluigi. I’m serious. He’s in a few of the thumbnail images for some of the spinoff games but this encyclopedia never contains the name “Waluigi” and therefore must be considered incomplete. Is this punishment for harassing Sakauri about having the man in purple as a fighter in Smash? Has Nintendo chosen to snub this beloved staple of spinoffs since his following is largely ironic? You can have the last star back if Nintendo puts out a Waluigi addendum.
Great gift!
This encyclopedia exceeded my expectations as it is hard cover and has sone great printing on the inside. It was a gift for my seven year old who loves Super Mario. He could care less about the minor inaccuracies of certain translations. I've seen other reviews in regards to that and they made me laugh. It was only 20/30 dollars. What did the expect? 😂 It is very detailed especially for the GREAT price. I would buy it again.
All things Mario.... and then some
This book is amazing. Any and everything you could, should and would ever want to know about all things Mario. Secret levels, hidden objects, tips, tricks and history are all here. Well put together with incredible illistration and screenshots. An absolute must for any gamer or fan of the franchise.
Super Mario Lovers...Definite Must Buy
My 6 yo son is currently obsessed with Super Mario Bro and we purchased this encyclopedia to assist him in learning all the ins and outs about this game. My husband also learns something new from this book as well, even though he is of the generation of Super Mario Bro. This was a big brother gift to our son who truly enjoys flipping through the book and learning new things, almost daily.
A great book for any Super Mario fan.
If you're a Super Mario fan then this is the book you've been waiting for. It shows all enemies, levels, items and power ups for each Super Mario game frome the past 30 years, minus Odyssey. It's a great book overall.
The kids love this!
My kids ages 9 and 6 love everything Mario! This book has kept them occupied for hours learning every little detail of the history of the Mario Brothers and all of the games they are involved with.
Cute book - but arrived damaged
Very bright and appealing - my 6 year old will love it. Unfortunately the book arrived scratched even in its original packaging. Seeing as this was for my son and not an avid collector, I opted to not return it (he will likely do a little damage to it himself). Bummed it wasn’t in brand new condition but I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of sending it back and possibly not getting the item in time for Christmas.
Not worth buying
I don't know what I was thinking. This book came in damaged. I was surprised at the fact it was not wrapped. I thought it was used at first. But I looked through this book. It is horrible. I can't justify keeping it. The build quality is horrible. The presentation is ridiculous and I wouldn't recommend this to anybody. Whoever made this book. They are not good at making books.... Not this one anyways.
Awesome collection of Mario knowledge
My kids love this book so much we are on our third copy of it because they read it everynight and wear it out (hoping we’ll have better luck with the hardcover). The text is very small in parts, but the content is awesome, thorough, and engaging for Mario fans.
Not for a fan more for an introduction
Grossly incomplete. More of an intro to the history and games.
Mario Encyclopedia
It’s really awesome. It shows about everything.
Misleading
WTF.. This book should be called ‘Secrets To All Mario Games’ I needed this book back in 1985 not now when I’m 45... misleading..
Had to reorder, refunded with no problem!
The first book was a flop. It had torn pages and many pages were not bound. Reordered and the second book was perfect! 8 year old Carrie’s it wverywhere he goes!!!
I give Super Mario Encyclopedia 5 stars plus!
Super Mario Encyclopedia is the perfect gift for anyone who’s a big fan of Mario. Recommended for ages from 2-90. This was a gift for my 29 y/o son who is thrilled to own it. Seriously, you won’t regret buying this extraordinary book!
Best Mario and Luigi book ever!!! Perfect book for those Mario lovers
Best book ever for the little Mario lovers!!! I have 3 boys who are obsessed with Mario and Luigi!! The book is huge and so full of information!!! Definitely recommend!
My son reads every day
If you have A Mario fan in your life this book is a must. My eight year old reads and refers to this book often. When his friend s come over they look at it for warp worlds or character information. I highly recommend this book!
Best Book for Mario
This is a must if your kids love anything Mario. I purchased it for my grandson and he loves it and hasn’t put it down to this day..
Geared to adults.
Lots of text, not little kid friendly. The book is shrink wrapped in stores so we had no idea before purchasing. Great for an adult, not for a little kid.
Great book about Mario!
Son absolutely loves this book. He spends his day reading each of the various characters and enemies and then provides me with all the trivia about them. Great book for any Mario fan!
Good buy
My nephew went crazy for this. It bit expensive but it does have alot of information. Great photos and easy description for kids.
Great super Mario book
Great super Mario book with tons of illustrations and history for each Mario game. Easy to read and comes in hardcover.
Good for Mario fans
I bought this book for my son who likes everything Mario. He has read it through plenty of times. Very good book!
Great, high quality book
This book is worth it for any classic Nintendo fan. It reminds me of reading the old Nintendo Power magazines as a kid. The book itself is high quality and well-made, with good thick pages and a nice hardcover. It has tons of great graphics.
Very nice gift for a Mario fan
Nicely made book with lots of great info and artwork. It was my Mario fan's favorite birthday gift!
Nice
Came a little dented on the side. Pretty nice book to have if you have kids interested in any Mario stuff!
Great book!
My son is a Mario addict. This book has been awesome!
Scratched, torn and decolored
Bought it "new" but it arrived in terrible condition, decolored, scratched and torn on the edges. I'm returning this item. Now I see all the bad reviews saying the same thing and I wonder how does Amazon not prevent this to happen THIS often. This is clearly a damaged lot.
Great Mario historia!
If you like Mario and want to know everything about him and his games, this is the best book.
Lots of facts
My little one loves it and has been quoting “facts” since he received it.
Excellent
Very nice book with quality paper and print, and very comprehensive. I love the fact that it includes actual in-game screenshots. The price is good too.
Very cool.
This is really cool if your a big fan of the Super Mario series like me.
Must have for Mario fans
Purchased for a friend who is a self-appointed Mario expert, and even he learned quite a few things from this. Well worth the money.
Gran edición
La mejor edición de un artbook de mario, encontramos todos los datos y todos los juegos de estos 30 años. Muy recomendado.
Fell apart - Very Poor Quality!
Ordered this book for my Grandson for his birthday because the original book fell apart! Had I known that the original book fell apart I would never of ordered this one!! Very poor quality.
Mario & friends a-z
Superb. Great information to know if you’re a fan of super Mario bro’s. However, no background on Mario kart
Son loves it
Son carries this book with him everywhere.
Beautiful book
Really great colorful book. My so. Loves Mario and loves this book. He’s constantly looking at it and reading about the different games. Be warned parents, they will ask you for those games! Haha
Must buy for Nintendo lovers!!!
Such a cool book, my son 8 year old has read it for hours and hours!
Not as interesting as advertised
It was bland and not much new art was made for the book instead of concept art or illustrations it’s standard jpegs or pngs cut from the games.
Great gift for 30+ male!
Gave as a gift, seemed to really like it.
Books are meant to be read
Great coffee table item. Now I need a coffee table.
great book
this book is very good and arrived in perfect condition.
Great book for a Mario fan
My son loves this Mario book!
Very detailed
I got this as a gift and have enjoyed it very much. It has a lot of great information on the Super Mario Brothers.
Excellent book for the Mario fan!
I purchased this for my teenager who is a huge Mario/Nintendo fan. He absolutely loved this book. The artwork, color, quality of this book is very, very good. It is a huge book that will keep any Mario fan busy for days reading and admiring.
Great Product
This is a wonderful book
Obsessed
Son is obsessed with this book. If you have a Mario fan in the family, they will love it!
Awesome
First one I recieved was damaged and had a piece of tape over the big chip but second recieved next day perfect condition looks very nice son is going to love it
Loved it
If you have a Mario lover in your life as I do, they will love this book. As a mom, I know way too much about Mario, but my son LOVED this book and that is what matters.
Nice big book
My 12 year old boy lived it!! He is a fan of Nintendo. It is a big hard cover book. Very nice quality.
Great book with terrible binding
Great book, lots of fun info, but the binding is TERRIBLE. The book is now very fragile and the binding was wrecked after careful use after a month.
A Super Mario Bros Bible
My son calls this his golden book. I call it a Super Mario Bros bible. It's super big and worth the money. It has tons of info on games and characters and secrets I didn't even know!
awesome!!!!
very cool book wish they had it when I was a kid. now it's for my kid

Amazing book!!
This book is incredible! I received my copy today and it is so beautiful! I was lucky enough to get a copy with a star on the cover. It’s the cover I wanted so getting it sent to me randomly must have been serendipitous. The star on the front is a hologram. There’s a book mark ribbon with stars attached to the near center. The book also has blue pages. It’s a wonderful book!

Great info
Excellent , sturdy and well constructed.
Very impressive good looking book.
Great book for a Mario fan. Highly recommended. I love it.
Great Content, Faulty Design
This book is beautiful, and the content is spectacular. With that being said, my copy arrived with a creased cover, and the square shape of the book doesn’t fit well alongside other Dark Horse books or in my bookcase in general. I highly recommend picking up this book, but not the limited edition.
Super Lackluster "encyclopedia" that misses the mark, and isn't worth the purchase.
So when I first saw that this book was coming to North America, I obviously got really excited. However, after purchasing the book, I flipped through it for a while, before sitting down to peruse its contents seriously. I was extremely disappointed at what I found. This book can barely be called an encyclopedia at all, and its a damn shame. What a missed opportunity, a waste of money, and a waste of space. It gets some points for including some neat tidbits here and there but what takes up most of the pages are ridiculously broad descriptions and pictures of the enemies and characters from only a handful of the mainline Mario titles. In addition, there are some artworks that we've all seen before that come from the covers of the box art of each game and promotional materials. Some other nonsense is included, but really nothing to excite you, tell you things you didn't already know about these games, or hold your attention for long. For me, it's like skimming through the Marvel comics preview catalogs: You'll look through it once real fast to see whats inside, and put it down and never touch it again. Forget this garbage book and instead spend your money on something better, such as the Art of Mario Odyssey, although I believe you have to import that book.
