This lavish fourth volume in Abrams’ Slim Aarons collection revels in this photographer’s decades-long love affair with Italy. From breathtaking aerials of the Sicilian countryside to intimate portraits of celebrities and high society taken in magnificent villas, Slim Aarons: La Dolce Vita captures the essence of “the good life.” Slim Aarons first visited Italy as a combat photographer during World War II and later moved to Rome to shoot for Life magazine, yet even after relocating to New York, he would return to Italy almost every year for the rest of his life.
The images collected here document the aristocracy, cultural elite, and beautiful people, such as Marcello Mastroianni, Ursula Andress, Joan Fontaine, and Tyrone Power, who lived la dolce vita in Italy’s most fabulous places during the last 50 years. The introduction by Christopher Sweet shares stories from Aarons’s years in Italy and new insights about his life and career.

Praise for Slim Aarons: La Dolce Vita:

“Nostalgia-soaked images.” —Harper’s Bazaar

“Sumptuous images.” —Publishers Weekly

“It’s the next best thing to time travel.” —DuJour magazine

An enjoyable look at Italy at its most beautiful

We assumed that as the fourth book in a series of compilations of Slim Aarons's photographs of his years living La Dolce Vita, the material would begin to run a little thin. It doesn't. What a treasure trove he seems to have built during his lifetime of photography. The fact that this book is solely about Italy, which was his preferred home away from home, no doubt helps. Beautiful people, beautiful locations, exquisite photography. And I'm sure I'm not the only guy who will appreciate the additional, more revealing photo of Catherine Wilkes, perhaps St. Louis' most beautiful export. Regarding another reviewer's comments: The book presents photographs "from the period", beautifully reproduced on high quality paper, just as with the prior Aarons books, leading me to believe that the negative reviewer is confusing this book with another publication. Bottom line: if you liked his other three books, as we did, you are likely to enjoy this one just as much. Same format, same size, every bit as enjoyable.

Beautiful people in beautiful surroundings

Photos beautifully arranged with vivid colors and vivid people! Of course looking at this book makes one desirous of having been born rich, noble and Italian!

Beautiful

Very beautiful book, looks great on coffee table! Love the images chosen for this collection

The most gorgeous book ever

This is the most gorgeous book I’ve ever seen. It is worth every sent. It is big and looks beautiful on a side table or coffee table. I absolutely love it so much!

MAGNIFICANT PICTURES

THE RICH ARE DIFFERENT FROM YOU AND ME. AND THEY REALLY KNOW HOW TO ENJOY LIFE.

Not my favorite of all

Not my favorite of all...I prefer the photos that land a little closer to home, ie. American Blue Bloods, but still Slim Aarons so it has to be good.

Great pictures

Just as agreed

Great pictures of Italy

After spending three weeks touring Italy I fell in love with the architecture, food and people. I wanted something to remind me of the beauty and this book does that. These pictures were taken quite some time ago. The sad part is if you research the people in them, almost all of them are deceased.

Great book

Like the write ups and the photos make my mind wander and ponder my mext vacation Seller was fast and exactly as described

Ah, Slim ...

All of Mr. Aaron's books are just perfect. That is if you really do appreciate the good life or can appreciate without getting uptight over those who do. For me, this is a continuation and a perfect complement to all the other Aarons books that have preceded it. This is a very fun volume. Enjoy!

Beautiful presentation

This was a holiday gift for my Italian wife. Very beautifully assembled and a wonderful selection of images, it compels one to want to visit. An excellent addition to your coffee table book collection.

Beautiful photography

My fiancee wanted this book for her birthday-- she loves it.

This was purchased as a gift for a great Italian friend. He truly thinks it is just lovely. I will purchase another of these for the next gift for him.

Gave as a Christmas gift

And they loved it! Slim Aarons' books are great - a sneak peak at the lives of the quietly glamorous in beautiful photography.

Beautiful!

I wanted to jump into the photos. Gorgeous photos from a gracious era. The architecture, lifetsyle, fashion, and the Rivas - all to die for.

Five Stars

Beautiful Book, looks gorgeous on my table!

My father would be proud!

Chris Sweet, you've done a fabulous job capturing my father's love of Italy! I always think i've seen most of the photos my dad took, but there are lots in here i've never seen...especially some of the older B&W ones. Of course i'm biased, but the photos are spectacular. The introduction is rich in information about the time my dad spent in Italy and the captions are deep. This is a book my dad would have been so excited to show off. Love it!

Book is excellent - but the edge of the book was damaged

The content and the book is as I expected - very inspiring - but the front-page was having a damage from the freight....

So disappointed!

I bought this book to take as a gift for a holiday dinner party. From the description I thought it would be full of Slim Aaron's photos from the heyday of "la Dolce Vita".Instead i received a book with lots of pictures of the current generation of family members in posed pictures in designer clothing. The quality of the pix is disappointing also. They are printed on rather thin pages. The pictures are not glossy and are a bit fuzzy. Worst of all, I now have to go hunting for an appropriately elegant gift. It is certainly not this!

Old Movie Stars, Old Money, All a Big Yawn

La Dolce Vita, I was expecting beautiful pictures of life in Italy. Not so here. Lots of interior shots of "old money" in designer clothes sitting in ornate rooms looking mostly bored. If I wanted this, I could look for old Vogue magazines from the 50's and 70's. I am so disappointed.

Gorgeous!

I enjoyed reading about the photographers, movie stars, and royalty as much as I enjoyed the very beautiful photos of many decades. This is a heavy and sumptuous coffee table book, not meant to be devoured quickly. I think the beauty of this book is like the saying about Slim Aaron's life choice of photography after the war: "Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." After the war, he wanted no more to be a part of it, not even as a photographer, so he left L.A. and moved to Italy. He wanted to surround himself with beautiful things, hence his photographs. They are timeless; classic.

Beautiful photography of a different era.

This is a big coffee table book full of mostly colour photography of people in beautiful places. The people in the photos are sometimes young and sometimes old. What I find most appealing in these photos is the lack of post processing which one sees so often in contemporary work. The result is that the viewer can better relate to the subject. The locations in many ways overshadow the people in the photos so this is a book more about Italy itself, rather than the people in them who mostly serve as a conduit for the viewer to immerse themselves in the locale. Of course it is always fascinating to see the people who lived that kind of life and the book offers short passages that relate the story behind the people in each photo. While I find some photos overly posed (see the back cover of the book for an example) the majority of the work included here is of people on vacation, being relaxed and having a good time. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous book!

So happy with my book! It’s in pristine condition (still in its original plastic) and is stunning to look through. Could not be any happier with the book — cannot believe it’s 2nd hand at all. Slight delay in delivery but that’s expected due to Covid. The seller was very helpful in communicating all tracking info so that I knew when delivery could be expected.

An amazing book from Slim Aarons
