I like all the books from this series so far. Great for early readers and for teaching Sunday School.

Accurate kids bible story...might be better for closer to age 8.....

Moses Leads the People (An Adventure Bible I Can Read!) illustrated by David Miles, is another great, accurate children's book depicting the classic Bible story of Moses and the Exodus. It begins with Moses seeing the burning bush and being asked to help set God's people free, and goes through the sending of the plagues, and Moses parting the water for the Israelites. I, personally, felt that this was a very accurate re-telling of the Bible story. The only part that caught me off guard was some of the pictures of the plagues were rather disturbing (like the man with the boils) and that the death of the first born was focused on. I know that that is a major part of the Biblical story, however, I wonder how appropriate it is to be focused on that for the ages group that would be likely to read this book (which is 4-8 recommended). I did let my children read this book. Rebecca (age 7) read the story to her brothers (ages 4 and 2) and she did not have any problems with the story. There were a couple of words that she paused over but was able to sound out...like plague and locusts. Jacob (age 4) had a lot of questions about the 10 plagues and seemed afraid that they would happen again. It led us to discuss God's love for us and that the Egyptians were treating God's people badly and that is why God sent the plagues. Rebecca did not seem to be upset or caught off guard by the pictures of the plagues. Even with this issue, Moses Leads the People will remain in our library as a way to share the Bible stories with my children. I believe that they should know the stories, but I might wait until Benjamin and Jacob are closer to the 7-8 age range before we read it again. Disclaimer: I received this book free from the publisher and Booklook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Great Homeschool Resource

From the creators of The Adventure Bible, now comes an easy reader about Moses! This easy, I CAN READ Reader is a level 2 reader designed for developing readers. Moses Leads the People begins with Moses' experience with God at the burning bush. This moment reminded me that our God is an experiential God. A personal God. God met with Moses and gave him a mission. A mission that seemed impossible and unlikely but possible with God. When Moses was alone with God, He received encouragement, instruction and a glimpse into the will of God for God's people. The story then progresses into Moses' experience with Pharoah, the plagues and the crossing of the Red Sea. This book came at a very timely manner to our homeschool since our pastor just preached on the crossing of the Red Sea this past Sunday! The story was still fresh in my children's little minds and they were able to enjoy this book in light of what they had just learned this past week! I love to have resources to use in our homeschool that are both based on Scripture and educational! This reader is perfect! My seven year old was able to read this book with ease and confidence. It wasn't too short like many readers but long enough to make him feel like he accomplished something when he finished the last page! The younger ones enjoyed listening to the story and will be able to read it soon enough. The pictures, by David Miles, depicted the story well. The story of the plagues can be gruesome if you really think about it, but these images were done in tact and appropriately to get the message across that God punished the Egyptians but spared the Israelites! My middle son loves the story of God's protection!

Surprising and Satisfying.

Author: David Miles Publisher: ZonderKidz Reading Level: Leisure Pages: 32 Moses Leads the People (henceforth, Leads the People) is an “I Can Read! Level 2” book adapted from the Adventure Bible put out by ZonderKidz. Fitting with the theme of the Adventure Bible, Leads the People recounts an Old Testament story while hinting at the future fulfillment found in Jesus Christ. This particular story focuses on the entirety of exodus story including the plagues and Egypt’s destruction in the Red Sea. During our first reading, Kenzie (almost 3 yrs) was rather taken aback by the directness of the book. Leads the People does not shy away from the full ramifications of the ten plagues brought by God upon the people of Egypt. Even the illustrations by David Miles do not hide the fact that God brought physical death as part of His plagues against Egypt. Kenzie listened with wide eyes throughout the first reading. This was particularly emphasized during the final plague and the crossing of the Red Sea. Parents with a mind for the spiritual truth(s) of the passage will need to describe how this story reflects upon Christian baptism and God’s “killing” of our sin. As a parent, I remain impressed that Moses Leads the People is one of Kenzie’s “naptime” reading book. She is enraptured, perhaps, with the story and God’s efforts to redeem His people. There remain some Biblical inaccuracies (e.g. Aaron traveling with Moses to Egypt) but the overall story remains true to the Biblical account. Much like God’s Great Creation, I am surprised and increasingly satisfied with the accuracy and focus of Moses Leads the People. All three children had good things to say about it

This is part of the “I Can Read Book!” series. The series includes a large number of secular titles, while “Moses Leads the People” is a version of the Exodus story, written for juveniles ages 4-8. This one is designated as Reading Level 2. Reading this with a first grader; he needed some extra help with the words. With a second grader; she needed minimal help with a few unfamiliar words, and with a fourth grader who sailed through without any difficulty. All three children had good things to say about it. The story is told in a simple condensed way, with full color illustrations on every page. Two of the kids said the artwork was very important to them in understanding the story, while the third said that he enjoyed hearing a Bible story written with kids in mind. This book is based on the Adventure Bible for kids, which I have no experience with. However, based on the reactions of the children I read this book with, it is a great way to reach kids with Bible stories, while also instilling in them a love and affection for reading in general. For its appeal to the young ones, this book gets five of five stars. I Can Read! Bible stories for primary grade children

I just love the I Can Read! book series for beginning readers and I'm happy to find that they have a series of Bible stories from ZonderKidz. This book, Moses Leads the People, is based on the Adventure Bible and is rated at "Level 2: Reading with Help". Level 2 books are meant for children who are beginning to be confident readers, but who still need a little help with unfamiliar words. Books like Amelia Bedelia and Frog and Toad are Friends also fit in this category. There are 28 pages of text with large print, 2-4 sentences on each page, and plenty of colorful pictures. The editors try to be sensitive to difficult subject matter (death of the firstborn shown as mother sitting on an empty bed with face in hands) while staying true to Scripture. Because this is meant for children beginning to read longer sentences, they're probably in 1st or 2nd grade and have heard the story of Moses, the 10 plagues, and the Exodus before. However, adults might want to be on hand to answer any questions. There are a few words kids will need help with: plagues, Pharoah, Israelites, Egypt. But there's plenty of repetition so that kids can practice their reading skills. I love the fill-in-the-blank bookplate inside the front cover that says "Hooray, ________________ can read this book!" What a terrific confidence builder for a young reader. This is a great starting point for kids learning how to read Scripture on their own.

A Great Introduction to the Bible

I appreciate the folks at Zonderkidz adapting the Bible to a readable format. I also appreciate how they are breaking them down into shorter stories so as to not intimidate children. One criticism I have with the series is that it always seems as though God is asking for help. For example, in this book, Moses hears God say, "Moses, I need your help!" This is instead of "Do not come any closer..." It might be splitting hairs, but we must always seek to make much of God and not too much of man. Regardless of this criticism, Moses Leads the People is faithful to the Biblical account. The illustrations bring the stories to life for the children and, I have found, they really enjoy hearing how God triumphs. Being a parent of 5 children, 1 which just learned to read and 2 yet to still learn how to read, I am becoming a huge fan of this series. Being a pastor of a church where we have 15 children under 8, I can see how this series will be a huge benefit for all parents. While this series will never replace reading the Word of God, it does an excellent job of introducing the children to the Word of God. I recommend this book to all children and all parents of children.

Perfect for my 1st grader!

Moses Leads the People, by the publishers of the Adventure Bible, is a level 2 I Can Read title. These titles are recommended for developing readers who are reading with help. The story is a mix of easy to sound out words, sight words, and longer words. The story is pulled straight from scripture and reworded for young children to understand. Illustrations are colorful and cover the entire page. My daughter, age 6/1st grade, is at the perfect reading level for this book! We used it as our oral reading fluency book for a week in our homeschool. She and I enjoyed reading the familiar story together. It also dovetailed nicely with our current study of Ancient Egypt in history. It can be hard to find books that challenge her while still covering real content and this book fits the bill. Her only feedback would be that it was a little long, but mom says that is just what she needed to challenge herself! This book would also make an excellent read aloud for younger children. I would be quite interested in seeing more of these titles in the future, particularly old testament stories. In exchange for an honest review, I was provided with a free copy of this title through the BookLook Bloggers program.

My Kids Enjoyed It!

The Adventure Bible Moses Leads the People introduces children to the story of how God delivered the Israelites from Egypt. This ZonderKidz I Can Read Book is ideal for children ages four through eight years old. My 6 year old daughter has moved beyond beginner readers and had no issues when reading through this book on her own. Little if any help was given on my part on reading the story. We've read it together as a family and my daughter has picked it up to read on her own several times. There are 32 pages in this book. I felt the story was light yet accurate. It begins when God is speaking to Moses in the burning bush, goes through the plagues & struggles, ending with Moses and the people crossing of the Red Sea. Every page features well done illustrations that aren’t comical, which is appreciated. The story isn’t wordy and it’s straight to the point. The words are easy to read for children. At the end of the book there’s a page that a page that features People in Bible Time with a short bit of information about Moses & his brother Aaron, there’s a Bible verse and an area called Words to Treasure which talks about the story just read and reminds us of how God gives us strength to carry on and salvation in Him. I would recommend this book! It’s a great way for a child to learn about the Bible that’s on their level. This book and the others in the series have gotten my kids even more excited about learning about our God and the people found in the stories of the Bible. I like this book as the others in the series to use as conversation prompts and a way to dig deeper into how God was moving in the lives of his believers.

Great for kids age 3 to 6

Moses Leads the People with pictures by David Miles is part of the I Can Read Adventure Bible Series and is a level 2 reader. Although this is the same story about Moses we all grew up hearing, it is done in a very child-friendly way. Some Biblical stories can sound downright scary when you're a child, but the nice pictures in this book help to mitigate the fright so that children can see that God is in control no matter how bad things might seem. I liked that the book had a page at the end describing the important people in the story and a small "words to treasure" section. My only issue was that the faces of the people seem to be more like caricatures. This would be a nice book for kids ages 3 to 6 or so. It's short enough to hold a 3 year old's attention yet accurate and detailed enough to not bore a 6 year old. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. I did not receive any other compensation. The opinion here is my own.
