The bloodiest battle in American history is under way . . . It's 1863, and Thomas and his little sister, Birdie, have fled the farm where they were born and raised as slaves. Following the North Star, looking for freedom, they soon cross paths with a Union soldier. Everything changes: Corporal Henry Green brings Thomas and Birdie back to his regiment, and suddenly it feels like they've found a new home. Best of all, they don't have to find their way north alone--they're marching with the army. But then orders come through: The men are called to battle in Pennsylvania. Thomas has made it so far . . . but does he have what it takes to survive Gettysburg?

8 year old loves these books

We have several of these “ I survived “ books, and my son loves to read them. He has read many that are available at our local library and remains interested in the series. I ordered a copy of this one because we are taking a trip to Gettysburg this summer and I thought it would be good way to teach him a little of the history before our trip. Good price for a little paperback. I read it myself last night. I enjoyed the story, but be prepared for a bit of violence. I guess it’s hard to avoid when you’re telling the story of the bloodiest battle of the Civil war.

You might just hook a reluctant reader!

I bought these with my 3rd grade and 1st grade daughters in mind. Yes, they've enjoyed them (perfect for grades 2-4 or so) but my kindergarten and preschool sons have totally loved them, as well. These are fictional accounts based upon true events, and my sons particularly enjoy these stories read aloud, over and over again. We will definitely purchase more of the collection.

Perfect Book for Kids! Review written by Mark Dingle Jr., 8th grade

I liked this book because it talks about the hard times during the Civil War. I like the entire series and enjoy how she talks about history in all of her books. The story starts off with two kids named Thomas and Birdie. They are on a plantation in the South and they decide to run away after hearing two men talking about buying Thomas. Thomas decides to run away with his sister to avoid being separated from her. As they are running away, they find two rebel soldiers holding captive a union solder. Thomas decides saves the union soldier by throwing a skunk that sprays the rebel soldiers in the eyes. The union Soldier then takes Thomas and Birdie back to his camp where his fellow soldiers are stationed. Thomas and Birdie start helping the union soldiers out with their needs. After two days have passed, the union soldiers marched to Gettysburg Pennsylvania for the big battle. Thomas and Birdie are told to stay at the camp with some of the union soldiers. Thomas asked the union soldier delivering supplies if he could come help deliver the amo to the union soldiers at battle. Once they arrive, their wagon is shot by a cannon and Thomas is forced to run out into the middle of the gunfire to escape. Thomas is hit by a stray bullet trying to run into the woods back to camp. After the battle is over some of the union soldiers find Thomas and carry him back to base. Thomas survives because of a tiny book that was given to him by the union soldier he saved. It was in his left shirt pocket when he was shot. This is a great way for kids to learn how helping others could benefit them in the future, while learning about some historical facts.

Another excellent read. . .

I bought this for my son during our home school sessions. I read ahead of time, and could not put it down! Lauren Tarshis's writing style makes history come alive for young readers, and it is entertaining for adults as well. There are bonuses in the book as well. My 9 year old loves these stories

Good book

Like how it gives over information about subjects in a fun way. I dislike history growing up but gaining so much knowledge reading these with my 8 year old

Great read!

My Sara graders have gotten into the I survived series and it is open their eyes to history places and what events were like a bit graphic but still an excellent read

Great series.

I bought my nine year old daughter the full series and she loves the books. She has read them all two to three times and shares them with her classmates as they take turns taking them home to read. She talks about the events all the time and how amazing it is that the people survived and has intrigued her interest more with the types of natural disasters that occur and incidents of mass casualty such as the sinking of the Titanic. Great books.

Great Series

This is the newest book in the "I Survived" series and my students could not wait for me to order it. Just like the others, my fourth graders get lost in the story and experience history through the eyes of characters they can relate to in one way or another. I appreciate any book that can get a nine year old to curl up on a bean bag and get lost in its pages.

.

I purchased all 9 books separately (it was more cost effective than buying the set as a whole). Looking forward to the August release of book 10. My child is not one who enjoys reading but boy oh boy does my child like this set.

My son LOVES all of these books, so I am always sure to order them, even if they are way below his reading level at this point. He loves history and this whole series is fantastic about putting a face on and personal story to each event. Highly recommend!!

Civil War story

Wr wonderful book to read aloud in a classroom setting. Kids enjoyed.

My daughter's favorite

My 4th grade 9-yr. old is simply doting on this series. She has read the entire batch thus far and this Gettysburg title is one of her favorites so far. Keep writing these, please, Ms. Tarshis!

Good, with a few issues

I read this to my daughters (ages 6 and 8) in preparation for a trip to Gettysburg. It was a good introduction to the Civil War, and it held their interest. I had a couple issues with it. There was a bit of white saviorism going on. The book portrayed the Union soldiers as all being strong abolitionists and fighting for the cause of ending slavery so that children like Thomas and Birdie could be free and go to school with white children. I am no historian, but I'm doubtful that is an accurate portrayal. I did appreciate how the book acknowledged some of the atrocities of slavery in a way that my children were able to understand...families being separated really resonated with them. One final annoyance I had was that these children came from Virginia and had apparently never seen or heard of snow. We live in the middle of VA and have snow every winter...my kids were like, "what, they don't know what snow is?" and it kind of took away the credibility of the story. Thomas and Birdie finally got to experience snow once they had been taken in by a nice white family in Vermont...SMH.

My 2nd grader loves this series! He was excited to get this book for Christmas.

Oh my gosh -touched my heart

Loved the story of Birdie and Thomas - great for a fourth grader reading about the Civil War. If a 10-year-old could give it 1 million stars she would .

I Survived Gettysburg...

I liked this book. A nice, fast, easy read. I especially liked the author's story and q and a at the end. Highly recommended.

History and fiction combine make for an easy read for me

I'm reading on my Kindle along with my 11 year old grandson who lives almost 200 miles away from me. History and fiction combine make for an easy read for me. We read the Battle of Gettysburg first and I was amazed. These books are giving him history lessons and firing up his love of reading higher than ever. I believe Ms. Tarshis has hit the ball out of the park for young readers!!!

Nice historical fiction sure to please reluctant readers.

Something as complicated as war can be very difficult to write about, especially for a young audience. Tarshis does a nice job of presenting a brief look at a key battle of the Civil War for child readers. I found it interesting that she chose to tell the story from the eyes of a young runaway slave boy and his sister. The I Survived series is a great series for reluctant readers because the stories move quickly while still providing historical background and this book is no different. Once Thomas and his sister runaway and join up as camp followers with the Union army on its way to Gettysburg things really move along providing not only a historical story but an adventure story. The only problem I had with the book is how easily Thomas and his sister were accepted by the Union soldiers. In reality, their treatment would most likely have varied greatly from the friendly to the bigoted. And traveling through the North would have been difficult as well despite the outlawing of slavery. And educating black children with white children that's a whole other issue altogether. However, I understand why the author chose not to address these issues since they weren't the main point of the story. Overall, a good read that children are sure to enjoy.

good

it has detal some how she made this like it is a life story it has intrest and history this is a book thar your kids shood

Great Fictional Introduction to History of the Civll War

My daughter became interested in the "I Survived" series because her 2nd grade teacher read the book to the class. (She wanted the book for her own and wanted to start "a collection".) Because the second graders had not been introduced to "History" yet, the book served as a great introduction, especially for children who think the world revolves around them! :) I have to say, my daughter was "on fire" for these books and can't get enough. It was great to see the excitement in her eyes - like a new world was opened to her! This book was written as fiction, from the eyes of a slave boy who, with his sister, gets away from slavery and falls into the arms of the a Union regiment. He shares his experiences on the battlefield and the story has a very happy ending. The bloody battles are not too detailed for children, however, they get a taste of the Civil War. My daughter didn't know anything about this war between the states, but is now interested in it and in History. It's a great book for any age. She is now reading "I Survived" the Attacks of September 11, 2001. It has opened a great discussion about that event in our household - happening only 3 years before my daughter was born. We're now going on Youtube looking for that day's News Reports and the Air Traffic Controller's recordings of those moments...It's extremely important for kids to learn about these subjects to make sure that our future generations don't let history repeat itself!

The book was amazing

I chose this rating because the book was amazing. I liked every part of the book and at points it got my attention but it was really good. I would recommend this book to a person who likes to read surprising books and want to know about things that they never knew that happened. This book series is a great series because of all the action and adventure. People should read this book to feel what it would have been like in the civil war and feel what it would have been like in the civil war.

Holds the kids attention.

This book is one of the FlickerTale nominees this year and I have been reading it to my 3 rd grade classes. They have been sitting totally engrossed in the book. I like the feature of the kindle reading app I got to use while reading this book to so many classes, multiple bookmarks.

Extremely good book

Lauren Tarshis is one of my favorite authors because her books get strait into the action whith out too much descriptions and boring information at the beginning. I also like her books because they are based on true facts and are very interesting to read, I have read all of her books and I encourage her to write more.

Great historical book

This book does a great job explaining the civil war and gives many great details... I loved this book and would definitely recommend it!

He liked the book

My son had to read for school. He left his book in school so I purchased this online. I think this will be the way to go from now on. He liked the book. Easy reading.

I love this book

It had the Gettysburg address at the end :) Yay yay yay hooray for I survived hooray for Lauren tarshis

Excellent for 10 yr old to learn & be entertained!

Excellent book for a 10 yr old boy to learn about Civil War, slavery, and Gettysburg while being entertained. We couldn't put it down!

Good for 11 year old

My 11 year old son got this book on his Kindle for a book report. He enjoyed reading it, as he finished it in about 2 hours, and it was understandable. I would recommend it for a child to read.

Great book for school project.

Great reading for children! School assignment for Historical Fiction went quickly with this great, attention holding story. Very enjoyable and age appropriate for elementary level readers.

It's ok...

Meh. I am a history geek and often will read books that are Gettysburg or Civil War related. I understand this book is written for kids, but I feel that this story needs more meat to it, and the story line jumps around a lot. So, if your kid loves history and wants an easy read, this is a good book to have. But if you're a history geek and want a book with a bit more of a story line to it, move on.

Great Series

My daughter LOVES the I Survived series! Every night she asked me to put another on her Kindle. She is running out of books! She is in 4th/5th grade.

All of the I Survived series are historically accurate, very well written, and holds the reader's attention, be s/he 8 or 65.

just a little things to tell to the author

I didn't like when the author said in the book when they lost birdie and found the doll which was covered with blood this detail really scared me and should not be in a children's book. I like when the author said in the book that when Henry the character said to Thomas and birdie that Henry's sweetheart (Mary) was going to teach Thomas and birdie to read and write. I liked this fact because a lot of African American people could not read or write so the kids are so lucky to get to learn to read and write. I love the I survived books because they give a lot of facts that I did not know and the story relates to a kid that experiences this event. Thank you Mrs.Tarshis for writing I survived books and keep writing I am so excited to read them all. Thank you so much for tacking your time to read this. Next I am going to read the bombing of the Pearl Harbor!!!! P.S I am not a hater I just want to tell you things that were on my mind!!!! From your #1 fan Lilly!!! Have a merry Christmas!!! THANK YOU

My 8-year-old grandson loves the "I Survived" series.....

and I love them for him because he is learning about history while being entertained. He read this one completely through on a car trip up to the mountains!

Very fair book

Umm..that was interesting I really don't think a tin could save you from a bullet but overall the book was great

Battle of Gettysburg (great)

This I survived book about the Gettysburg war. I m glad that I was not born in 1865! I was so sad that so many soldiers had lost there lives. I m glad president Lincoln ended slavery. It's horrible that slaves would be beaten and could learn to read or write. That s not fair or right. So please purchase this book and know about all this sad and happy moments in this book. You won't regret getting this book!!!

exciting

This is a very surprising book with some sadness I recommend this book to people who like adventure and excitement

True story

My granddaughter loved to read this book and forgot the world around her. It was difficult for her to have a break.

Great book in a wonderful series!

We love all the books in this series. This one is especially good and touching. An emotional read for all of us.

Great read for an 8-10 yr old

Good historical references and solid story telling. A little graphic in the battle scenes but it is about war. My son read it twice in one weekend

Good kids book

This is a good kids book. Very easy reading and engaging. I would recommend the entire series to young readers.

Wonderful

My daughter and I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the Civil War together. So glad they have great books like this for kids to read.

Best book ever

I chose this rating because if you read it you would know I don't like that it has the word BLOOD in it so much but I like how it can help kids when they are doing a report on the battle of Gettysburg I recommend this book to John-Micheal Sheperd

AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!!

This book is amazing. It is short but AWESOME. I read the full story in one night. This book totally deserves a five star review!! The best part is when Thomas gets shot and is saved by a book. I mean seriously, he's saved by a book for heaven's sake.

Great

It is a great book! Creative. And you get all these details about the battles the Union army faced with some touches that include the character's!

Amazing book

I Usually don't like history but these books make it fun and like your actually there I wish my history teacher would read these

My son loved it!

My son prefers non-fiction to anything else. These books are so good, he can't put them down! He wants all of the books!

Awesome read!

This was a wonderful book. I couldn't put it down from the beginning. I hope my 5th graders can get as much from it as I did. The author did an amazing job at providing enough fact and fiction to make it very enjoyable. Don't neglect the chapters after the story. I found them very helpful as well.

Gettysburg

Great book by the fabulous Lauren Tarshis and her vast knowledge of all things disastrous! This book surprisingly managed to cover the many aspects of the civil war while maintaining a breathtaking plot! Kids my age (11) are sure to enjoy! :) :) :)
