WWOOAAHH!!!! :o

woah :o!! i'm your biggest fan!!! :D Could you make a book with the name hunter in it i honestly don't care how you do it like a ship or a person preferably please and thank you so much. oh i forgot to say that i am mind blown right now because you have most best ideas on planet earth. I have a suggestion about the challenger rocket exploded for another i survived book and I hope that my suggestion was good and thank you for letting me have the opportunity to say something because other authors make my review least helpful even when it has at least 4 paragraphs. so again thank you for the opportunity to speak. (p.s. this is by a 9 year old who started to read i survived books when i was 3 years old.)

Execellent story

I bought this book for my grandson and we read it together. The story has important themes about family, perseverance, courage, helping each other as well as friendship and tragedy. I heartily recommend this book. Young readers don't know about Hurricane Katrina and this is an important part of our nation's history. The author writes with engaging descriptions and emotion.

Good job Y’all

My 8yo loves this series. And we actually did live through hurricane Katrina before he was born. It’s a sweet story and a great bit of history for him about his family.

Great Book

My son learned a lot about Hurricane Katrina. He read about 4 books from this series while being in Florida. I purchased this book as a summer read and I will tell you this, he enjoyed it because he is 9 years old and it was told from a child's perspective. He continues to ask me for them when he sees one that he hasn't read. Along with this for the summer he read Battle of Gettysburg, 1863; The Shark Attack of 1916; and I survived the Attacks of September 11th. This one really hit home because we live in Manhattan and I wanted him to understand what really happened. He decided to put the books in order and I thought that was a great idea. So would I recommend theses book?????? D E F I N I T E L Y !!!!!!!!

Another great book in the I Survived series!

Purchased this for my son who was reading it for his Battle of the Books competition at school. He has read a lot of the I Survived series and enjoyed them all including this one. Highly recommend these books!

Wonderful story about a terrifying event

I remember when this happened so clearly... It was terrifying to watch on tv. My 11 year old was absolutely shocked by the story. We even watched old news clips about it. The author did a wonderful job.

I Survived Hurricane Katrina...

I liked this book. A very fun and say read. I especially liked the facts at the end, as well as the author's commentary about Hurricane Katrina. Highly recommended.

Great Series for Kids

This book was purchased as a gift for a 9 year old. He was quite excited to receive it, especially since this story references events during his year of birth. The larger series is also popular with his friends, and they share comments about which books they like the best. These books are well written to hold the attention of youngsters, so I am very pleased.

Good for kids

My grandson really likes these books. He was happy when I surprised him with a few more.

Sometimes scary but always sweet and heroic fictional account of one family's journey through Katrina.

My child loved this book, and she learned so much about Katrina. While fiction, this narrative more than likely - sadly - took place far too many times during that horrific storm and aftermath. An ultimately redemptive account of one sweet family's struggle to stay alive!!!

I thought this author did a great job taking me along in the story

I thought this author did a great job taking me along in the story. She really gives the reader a close up view of what it must have felt like to live through such a tragic storm. I could have kept reading, I wanted to know more. I'm glad she included the plight of animals as well.

Great buy

my daughter needed this book for her class assignment. it served its purpose, and it was a great price. another satisfied customer here

Fabulous, educational books

this series of books is easy to read and packed full of facts about current day events (and historical events). The author puts them in the context of a story from the perspective of certain individuals living through these dramatic events. It allows your child to see what it would have felt like to be there experiencing this. It makes it come alive. I highly recommend these stories. Read them with your kid and it gives you great topics of conversation to engage in.

Grandson loves this series

I purchased this book for my 9 1/2 year old grandson. He really loves this series, and quite enjoyed this book. It was easy for him to read and understand, and kept him interested (and talking about it) to the end of the book. I highly recommend this book, and this series, for young readers who want something "real' to read about.

Great stories for 8 to 13 year olds.

The "I Survived" series of books have been a huge hit with my Grandkids. Both my grandson 8 and my granddaughter 12 love them. Informative, exciting, educational and well written. Lot's of action, heart and adventure. What more can you ask for. My grandson does not like to read but he will read these and Diary of a Wimpy Kid over and over again. My granddaughter loves to read and will re-read this series as well as the "Cementary Road " series by Kate Klise. Both get an A+ from me. Enjoy

Great series.

I bought my nine year old daughter the full series and she loves the books. She has read them all two to three times and shares them with her classmates as they take turns taking them home to read. She talks about the events all the time and how amazing it is that the people survived and has intrigued her interest more with the types of natural disasters that occur and incidents of mass casualty such as the sinking of the Titanic. Great books.

Addition to set

This was added to the grandkids set of event books

Another exciting story in the I Survived series

Ten-year-old boy absolutely loved this harrowing tale about Hurricane Katrina. He didn't want to put the book down. He gave the 5-star rating.

Highly Recommended!

If your in the market for books for your youngsters, I would definitely pick the I Survived series. It contains REAL information (Non-Fiction) so your youngsters will learn what happened in the past before they were born. Or if your a writer and looking for information I would read the I survived series.

Happy

Survival in a Hurricane

These I Survived books are great for reluctant readers. They are short, action-packed, and interesting. The writing is just detailed enough for the reader to be able to put themselves into the action, but not so detailed that the action slows down. Tarshis knows her audience and how to tell a gripping story. Highly recommended for anyone who likes survival stories.

GREAT!

My kid is 8 and loves to read these books, he likes that they have a "real" aspect to them...he is an extremely picky reader and it is so hard to find books that he likes to read, so I am amazed he loves to read this set of books, there has not been one yet from the series that he has not thoroughly enjoyed!

Fantastic Part of a Whole Wonderful Series

This whole series is great. She really presents historical fiction is an interesting, and exciting way for young readers, without being overly scary or inappropriate. My son has devoured all that is out and we stalk her FB page for when the next addition (Pompeii) will be out. My son love to read naturally, but this series I have caught him trying to read after bed time. That says a lot to take a shot on getting in trouble because you are so engrossed in a book. Love them all, and this one is great as it opened his eyes to more interest on the topic, and we went to you tube to watch past news videos so he could learn more about it from a ground zero stand point. It also let him tie in his own knowledge with Sandy that we are still recovering from. Lauren Tarshis really develops the characters in a way that is believable and keeps you tied to the real event in history.

Boys Love This Series

I am collecting these for my classroom library and they hardly stay on the shelf. This one seems to be one of the most loved because a lot of children have heard of Katrina but don't really know much about it. These are a little easy for 4th but yet are still "fun" books to read because they don't require a horribly long commitment.

Good for kids that like history but don't like reading a lot

My 4th grader loves these books. He is not a very avid reader so these books are perfect for him. They are easy to get through in a timely manner giving him a sense of accomplishment and he likes that although the character is fictional he actually gets to learn about real history.

Great!!!!

I love these books!!!

This was a book report for a 4th grade student, that was due over the summer break. My fourth grader (age 9) enjoyed the book as well as myself (age 60+). It has given us many areas to talk about such as music, the safety of New Orleans today and survival. How hurricanes does not have the same damaging effect to every city but it is a powerful force of nature. I will be purchashing the complete series "I Survived ____" for future book reports.

Book Review

{My thoughts} – Barry and his family are part of the many that ended up being trapped in New Orleans when hurricane Katrina had hit. They had tried to evacuate the city but the roads were nearly impassable and then his sister ended up getting really sick in the car. Their parents decided it would be best to go back to their house and hope that his sister would feel better and they’d be able to leave later. That night the storm hit. It got so bad that the lever broke and the town started to quickly flood. Barry had fallen asleep on the couch and something had woke him. He screamed and his dad helped him to the stairs. Eventually the end up in their attic and his dad has to bust through the roof with an axe. Once they are up their something happens and Barry ends up in the water. A majority of the book covers the time he spends separated from his family. The fact that he and his family aren’t together makes things really hard on him, but he finds reasons and ways to stay strong. This book is a really nice addition to the series. As an individual that has been effected by the flooding although not nearly as serious as what had happened in New Orleans, I can understand how Barry felt. I can understand and visualize the aftermath of the storm described within the pages of this book. I look forward to reading more books in this series in the near future.

Barry is brave and nice, because he was very brave after he fell ...

In this book, I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005, a kid named Barry and his family lived in New Orleans. They heard that a hurricane was coming so they decided they were going to leave town, but then Barry’s sister got sick so they had to go back and wait it out. When they got back, they went to sleep, but when they woke up there was water in their house. They went up to the attic where Barry’s dad stores an ax. He then used the ax to break the roof so they can go on top of the roof. Barry falls of the roof and is separated from his family. Will Barry survive this horrific hurricane? Read this book to find out. Barry is brave and nice, because he was very brave after he fell off the roof, and he did everything he could to try and make it back to his family. He is nice because he helped Abe’s dog even after Abe was being mean to him. The moral of the story is to expect the unexpected, and always be prepared for any situation. This book was good because it kept me interested. They put surprising parts in the book that make you feel many emotions. For example, I felt sad when he was separated from his family, then I felt happy when he helped his enemy’s dog. I would recommend this book because it is very interesting how Barry and his family try to survive this horrific hurricane. Jim 6th Grade Student

Nail-biting Action

Teachers and parents struggle to get male students 9-12 to read. Boys love action and reading to learn information. Author, Lauren Tarshis, offers both in I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005 . She tells this nightmare-come-to-life in short simple sentences with pictures about every ten pages. Narrated from the perspective of a ten-year old boy, this spellbinding, this 95-page adventure shares Barry's harrowing battle to stay alive in one of the five deadliest hurricanes in history. The book whets the reader's interest during story and satisfies his curiosity with a three page addendum about the storm. Barry lives in the 9th ward in New Orleans. His biggest fear before the storm was the neighborhood bully's killer dog. Forced to ride out the storm because Barry's sister is too sick to travel, the family watches as water overtakes each floor of their home. Finally Barry and his father hack through the attic to wait the storm out on the roof. Barry is swept into the deluge by the wind, and is on his own in a raging river carrying sharp debris, houses, poisonous snakes, and the killer dog. I was on the edge of my chair during the entire book.

Best Book in the "I Survived" series so far

Dear Ms. Tarshis, You did a very nice job with “I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005”. In an entertaining story aimed at school-aged folks, you successfully incorporated: - A history lesson about New Orleans and it's preparedness, or lack thereof, for the big storm that was inevitable and finally occurred in 2005. - A socio-economic explanation of the Lower 9th Ward, and different reasons why people did not heed the warning to evacuate, - A nice morality tale about bullying - Perhaps the best illustrations of any book I've seen in your I Survived stories up until now and you did it all in about 100 pages with readily-readable font and spacing! Mind you, I wish you'd been able to include something about the nightmare madhouse that was the Superdome during the disaster. However, you managed to cram so much into such a little space that I have to concede I don't think it would have been possible to do so without overwhelming your text OR extending it past the effective story length. I've read and reviewed 4 books in your series so far, and I believe I have a couple of others on my “to be read” pile. Based on what I've seen to date, I certainly am looking forward to those books AND to acquiring and reading the ones I have NOT come across as yet. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Andrew RATING: 5 stars. Great job.

Katrina hit MISSISSIPPI!

My daughter borrowed this book from the library. She enjoys this series. Katrina hit Waveland, MS, & devastated the MS Gulf Coast, not New Orleans. Yet another portrayal that shifts the focus away from the truth for the more "popular" vacation spot. Please, educate your kids on the real hurricane damage, not just news sensationalism.

I read this book a while ago and remembered it ...

I read this book a while ago and remembered it as I watched Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Barry and his family survived Katrina in 2005. Their story’s fictional, but so many of their experiences have been repeated recently. Barry’s family tried to evacuate but were forced to return home. They watched flood waters approach and found themselves on the roof, hoping for rescue. Read and discover how they survived, and know that those in Texas, the Caribbean, and Florida will too.

Excellent children's books on historical events

My almost 8yr old son loves these books. I read them to him at night and he can't get enough. He always asks for "just one more chapter" because they are always so exciting. We've read 4 of them so far and he is getting 3 more for his birthday. I like that the author writes about historical events in a way that depicts them realistically, telling true- or fairly true-to-life information without it being too scary of content for a 2nd grader. Just enough action that includes events that open up for questions and dialogue with your child. I highly recommend these books for anyone with a child curious about historical events that wants to have them in a child-appropriate non-fiction/fiction format.

Great Introduction to Historical Fiction With Your Kids

I read this with my 7 year old and we loved it. It was a great introduction to historical fiction. The writer did a good job with teaching about some of the facts with out the sad gory details. You would get little hints of what was happening when it talked about "hearing screaming" or glimpses of things, but that helped show the reality of the situation. My son loved reading about the main character and his life. Although some of it was a stretch it had to be in order for it to have a happy ending. I was able to have a discussion with my son on how would he have handled some situations. He was intrigued by the facts and wanted a little more history behind the actual event. We are looking forward to reading more of these together.

I wasn't expecting much from this book, since it was essentially a book about "current" events, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's well-written and exciting. I could relate to the characters - and the adventure!

I love it!

Do you like books with survival and adventure? Then this is the book for you! There he was,Barry, all alone with Cruz on a dry patch of roof. It all started one day. Everyone of New Orleans is going to different places all because of Hurricane Katrina. Read to find out why Barry is stranded. This book is amazing. It has survival and adventure. I think this is a good book for everyone. I love the way it is written and and how it is written in first-person. I also love the bravery! My favorite part is the survival! I recommend this book to all ages, especially families. If you like this book you will like all of the other books in this series.

Good Series (AR) book reading level 4.0 - AR Pts: 2.0

This is a very good series - my son loves these books. I like them because they are about an event that happened in real life and that is a great way to discuss a tragedy with my child. The story of Hurricane Katrina is brought to vivid and horrifying life in this fictional account of a boy, a dog, and the storm that no will ever forget. This is an accelerated reader (AR) book reading level 4.0 - AR Pts: 2.0

All About The Boy

Have you ever read any of the I survived series well here is a good one hurricane katrina. This book is about a boy who survived it all by himself so let me tell you what happened. One day while the luke was watching a football game with his dad it started raining really hard while they were watching football he decided to take a nap. While that happened the water entered the door and started to flood the bottom part of the house then luke and his family stayed up on the roof so they couldn't get touched by the water and no one would get lost in it.Luke got separated from his family so he was on his own,he found a house that had one of the meanest dogs in it but turned out he wasn't.The dog became to be his best friend while it happened. In conclusion Why I liked this book is because It teaches you that you could use a friend every once and a while. The main character was good at remembering what to do during one of these kinds of situations.Another thing is they described what was happening in the book very well so you could imagine in your head what was going on.The main character is a brave kid who seems like he can handle himself. The dog helped him through his struggles while he was down, and what would you do if you were in this kind of situation. great book for boys who don't like reading

I am struggling with getting my 9 year old (in the 4.1 to 5.1 AR Zone) son to love reading and he is fighting me tooth and nail, every step of the way, from dusk till dawn, inside and out, top to bottom, fluoxetine to alprazolam, etc.etc., so this book has been a great blessing. The book is told from the perspective of the most likely reader, a 10 year old boy how survives katrina. This book is 95 pages long with a 3 page addendum that answers questions about after the storm/ aftermath. You will find illustrations about every 10 pages (my son still likes pictures). My son really developed a new empathy of the Hurrican Katrina and he was very concerned about the main character, little boy named 'Barry' and 'Cruz' the dog that survived with him. This is exactly what some boys need in books: Action, Action, and more Action. I hope the author will continue to churn these little gems out.

I think the hurricane is history, but this book is big time history!!!

I read this book in like 30 minutes but I was stuck in it, I couldn't keep my eyes the of it. It was like that survival Barry had to do, you couldn't stop doing it. I love some books better then this, but I still think this would like number 2 or 3.

The best I Survived book in the 1-10 series!!

I love this book!!!! The characters are fake, but all the facts are true. I would bring this on a ten hour drive to read because it's so good I would read it read it again and again the whole time!!

Liked the history

This is a young boy's story of what happened when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I could feel the fear he felt and how he tried to be brave. I enjoyed the history given and I was glad of the happy ending for him. I also enjoyed the facts given at the end of the book and the animal rescue story.

WONDERFUL! :)

This was an eye-opening book! It shows you how hard it was in parts of the world including the USA. It brings you into another world! It is action filled and there is never a dull moment and it keeps you on the edge of you seat the whole time! I read this book in one read because i couldn't put it down! This book series is AMAZING!!!!!!! Anna K, (age 10)

Excitement and adventure

Barry and his family would have evacuated before Hurricane Katrina hit, but his little sister was sick, so they had to stay home. When the storm hits and Barry is swept away, he has to use his head to survive the worst hurricane New Orleans has ever seen. And exciting adventure for 8- to 10-year-olds. Especially good for reluctant readers.

Favorite Book!!

As a nine year old boy I can comfortably say this is one of my favorite books ever. Every word is exciting and and well written. I Could read the series over and over again and not get bored of it. This books takes you on a magical adventure and it is a true page turner. I would definitely rate this 5 stars!!!!

You should read the book because it is really good.

Reviewed bu Colton (4th Grade): This book was about when they had Hurricane Katrina and the boy who saved a dogs life. You should read the book because it is really good.

I liked this book because there was a lot of action

I liked this book because there was a lot of action. It described the destruction caused by the storm Katrina in New Orleans. Something I found interesting is that it showed how the characters survived a terrible storm. Some jumped from roof to roof to stay away from water. It reminded me of the pictures I saw during the storm Sandy in New York City. Storms can be so destructive and ruin homes and lives. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know about hurricanes or people who live in places where hurricanes can hit.

Exciting, moving, historical: Great book for kids and parents.

My son is 7 and reads at an advanced level. I am concerned that the topics in books at his reading level are sometimes not appropriate for his age. He read this book and enjoyed it, so I read it as well. In this case, I love that such a tragic event in our recent history was handled gently. Even as an adult I found the book exciting and moving. I'm glad that my son can enjoy learning about historical events and I expect that after he reads more books in this series he will move on to learn more about some of the events.

The reason this book was so good is because I have never read a book that ...

This book is about a young boy and his story about fighting to survive mother nature during Hurricane Katrina. It’s filled with suspense, excitement, and it will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat for more. The book begins with Barry getting thrown out into the water with his friends dog and getting knocked out cold by a floating log. Does he survive? Read the book to find out the whole story!!! The reason this book was so good is because I have never read a book that contained so much detail. Out of 4 stars, I would give it four stars. I recommend this book for ages 8 and up because there is an advanced vocabulary.

Excellent historical fiction

I read this 📖 with my son as his homework reading text. Even though it is historical fiction, it was simple and easy to understand as each chapter was about 2-3 pages.

Five Stars
