So far, good
So far, I've made the tofu scramble and the totchos. Both are delicious! I like the pictures and layout of the book. I enjoy the concept of using leftovers to make a whole new meal. I'm the only vegan in my household, and my family won't eat my cooking, so I always have leftovers to work with. I'll update this review as I try more recipes.
Easy, yummy recipes!
Lauren did it again! Every recipe is so good. I have her 1st cookbook, but she definitely “leveled up” on her 2nd book. I plan to try every recipe. Thanks for all your hard work putting this amazing cookbook together.
Great as expected
I’m long familiar with Lauren so nothing in here is too surprising but it’s great as expected. The font is much easier to read than the first book (Vegan Comfort Classics).
Lauren Toyota does it again
Her second cookbook. I now have both. They are beautifully put together and the recipes are wonderful. Thank you, Lauren, for all you do.
Amazing book and I am definitely looking into buying her first one
I love how she incorporates leftovers into other recipes
Not just for vegans!
Hot for Food All Day is a fantastic cookbook for everyone, not just vegans. It is filled with recipes for uncomplicated good food. While all recipes are vegan, they are easily adaptable should you prefer to use real cheese or even meat instead of tofu or soy. The genius in these recipes is in the unique but unexotic flavor combinations. Combinations that make you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" Examples include a Gouda grilled cheese with raspberry jam and crispy onions, a green pea soup with Old Bay croutons, and a pizza mac n cheese that are all delicious. In addition, I made Ms. Toyota's Ragu Bolognese which was very tasty and a nice alternative to a standard meat bolognese. There are plenty of other recipes for sandwiches, pastas, soups, snacks, breakfast items, and desserts I can't wait to try. In particular, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Krispie Cake. Not only is the food fantastic, but every recipe includes a photo and every recipe has a symbol at the top of the page indicating both the prep time and the cook time. Many of the recipes also have a Level Up symbol as well. This indicates that the recipe incorporates leftovers of a more basic dish. One example of this is using leftover mashed potatoes to make mushroom kraut potato cakes which, in my opinion, were even better than the mashed potatoes. This is a brilliant idea and I wish more cookbooks included this option. The only downside is that some forethought and planning are needed in order to make one of the Level Up dishes. I could keep raving about these recipes but my advice is just to give this cookbook a try and see for yourself. I would be shocked if anyone was disappointed. Solid Recipes That Work
Hot for Food All Day delivers a collection of solid vegan recipes that work without over-relying on vegan replacement products. We're not vegan, but happy to eat plant-based, so I tend to gravitate to the recipes WITHOUT soy curls or meat/cheese alternatives. Just personal preference. Standouts so far from my cooking from Hot For Food All Day -- Tofu Fingers, Spicy Lentil Wraps with Tahini Caesar dressing, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Krispie "cake." (It's like a giant peanut butter rice krispie treat with chocolate on top -- it's a knockout!). BTW - for the tofu fingers, while I photographed it with ketchup, sweet chili sauce was the winning dip at our house. I also made the mac and cheese that's meant to replicate Kraft Dinner, and you'll be surprised how close it gets to replicating the KD experience. I know I was. I will say there are a couple of recipes that may rub purists the wrong way: Cacio e Pepe that employs corn chowder from another recipe, even I was raising an eyebrow at that one; and Zucchini Carbonara without eggs, obviously, and using Tempeh Bacon.) Overall, a book worth checking out if you're looking to go plant-based a couple of times a week. I received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
Solid Vegan Cookbook - One recipe - many meals !
I was intrigued by Hot for Food All Day because of features that I haven’t seen before - 1)the use of leftovers or whatever you have around in RECIPE?! and 2) LEVEL UP ! in which she gives more versions of a recipe. A perfect example of LEVEL UP ! is her ONE-POT MAC N’ CHEESE. It starts with a great, easy, vegan recipe for macaroni and cheese and then goes on to LEVEL UP ! With BUFFALO CHICKEN MAC N’ CHEESE and then PIZZA MAC N’ CHEESE, THAI RED CURRY MAC N’ CHEESE, TEX-MEX MAC N’ CHEESE and finally GREEN MAC N’ CHEESE. One recipe to learn…many different meals. A great example of using up leftovers in RECIPE?! is the recipe for MY EVERYDAY ROASTED VEGETABLE SALAD in which use “use up” the Hummus Dressing that you made from the recipe on page 201. Hot for Food All day also uses food items that are easily available and the “stuff you need” chapter lays out all the ingredients used in the book. I liked the layout of the Contents because it is easy to find recipes based on the meal you want to make and especially easy to find LEVEL UP ! recipes. This is how I cook . It is nice to have cookbook that acknowledges that. You don’t have to go out and buy a new shopping list of ingredients for every recipe you make and be left with a refrigerator and pantry of leftover groceries. A refreshing change. Great Vegan Cooking Options
Huge fan of some of these dishes! My two favorite sections included "The Bowl Bible" (great mix-and-match options for building grain based bowls with different toppings) and the One-Pot Mac and Cheese with the plethora of mac n' cheese options. The Green Mac N' Cheese has officially become one of my go-to favorite recipes. One of my favorite things about these recipes is that they definitely favor the idea of using pantry staples. I was able to make a lot of these dishes without drastically altering my weekly shopping list and I found that a lot of the dishes seemed to revolve around a few staple items with a handful of special veggies or condiments to make specific dishes. It really lives up to the idea of "easy recipes"--these are all very do-able! The only thing I didn't love about this is that it heavily favors "meat replacement"--or, at least, included way more than other veggie-based cookbooks I use. I'm a bigger fan of utilizing fruits, grains, vegetables, legumes, etc. as the focal point of a dish instead of just recreating standard meals with a meat replacement like vegan lunch meat or non-meat bacon chunks, but that's a personal preference and many people will probably think differently! This cookbook is not just for vegans!
I received a free copy of this book from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review. Since I’m not vegan, I likely wouldn’t have sought out this cookbook, and I would have been missing out. The recipes are reliable and interesting - and the things I’ve made from the book so far (Crispy Tofu Fingers, Roasted Red Cabbage, Old Bay Popcorn Seasoning + Snack Mix, and Crunchy Coconut Granola) have all been hits. There is a lot of recipe crossover in the book - for example, the Salted Caramel Tahini Milkshake gets its start from leftover No-Churn Salted Caramel Tahini Ice Cream, and the Enchilada with Red Sauce get their start from the Tortilla Soup. My only complaint is that many of the recipes seem to have long ingredient lists - the Tortilla Soup’s list is 25 ingredients long. The recipe itself doesn’t look difficult to make, and the tagline of the book is “easy recipes to level up your vegan meals”, but such a long list of items doesn’t make me this “cool, I’ll just whip this up”. I do really like the variation on themes, like for the scones, grilled cheese, mac-and-cheese, and quick breads. If you’re already a vegan, or are looking eat more plant based meals in general, than this would be a good book to add to your cookbook collection.

Fast and easy vegan
I'm definitely a carnivore and was kinda happy to get a vegan cookbook in the mail because I would never buy one. This is Lauren Toyota's follow up to her first vegan cookbook. My wife was not happy that I was going to be cooking vegan for a week but I thought it was a good opportunity to give it a try. First the ingredients in the book are easy to find which I find important firstly when deciding on a cook book. Nothing worse than having to search online and overpaying for something you may not use again. Lots of great ways I never knew you could do vegan. I think there's mac and cheese about 5 different ways. Lots of dressings for bowls as well. Our favorite thing ended up bing the crunchy butter beans. It reminded me of crispy chickpeas. Great flavor and crunch. Tofo: she calls for firm but I ran into a lady at whole foods and she said always go extra firm for the most part. I was doing a stir fry and baking with it. After using the extrafirm I don't think the firm would have been as good an option. The stir fry was good. The sauce wasn't as good as some of stir fry sauces I've found on skinny taste blog. Corn chowder was solid. I think you could feed this to a crowd. Corn chocolate chip cookies were...different. Not bad but definitely a strong corn flavor. I think overall I was happy with this experiment. The food cooked up well like the photos. Sometimes you work hard and it doesn't turn out anything close to what the photos look like. So I think 10 speed did a good job with the editing. I think if you're vegan you would love this book or a gift for one of your vegan friends. Delicious Vegan Eats!
I'll preface this review by saying that I am not a vegan, but I do enjoy challenging myself to cook vegan meals to help hone my cooking skills. I also am allergic to most soy-based products and avocado, and the vast majority of these recipes include one of those ingredients - hence 1 star docked from my review. Those issues aside, this is such a wonderful book with a creative variety of recipes that would be great for anyone looking to be more plan-based in their eating but not wanting to give up their favorite comfort foods. One of the things that makes this book so great is that she gives you a bunch of base recipes that can be spun into several more dishes. For example, I made the Miso-Roasted Kabocha Squash, which can be used in Stuffed Shells, Wonton Ravioli, and Broth with Udon. I used the squash in the Udon broth and it was incredibly delicious, very filling, and filled with complex flavor that was easy to produce. Overall I'd absolutely recommend buying this book if you're looking to eat vegan and like to plan meals without sticking to the same boring dishes. The recipes are flavor packed and from all over the world, so there really is something for everyone in here! I've received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
Great Introduction to Vegan Cooking & Eating
If you are even considering going partially vegan, this is a great starter manual! Tons of photographs, easy to read, and lots of building block recipes that can be used in various ways. As someone who is just dipping my toe into the vegan pool, I also think its very simple to swap out non-vegan ingredients to adapt to your shopping resource or household taste. Toyota even has sections on the recipe that allow you to "Level Up" and make different versions or riffs on a recipe. For a cookbook of this size, its a small but very impactful benefit! The Rocky Road Bars were killer and used another recipe for Vegan Granola which was SIMPLE and a huge hit with my kids. I liked the vast array of recipe options and the layout...it was easy to follow and easy to use. I already have mine tabbed up! Looking forward to finding options for serving more vegan treats and meals. I received a free copy of this fabulous cookbook from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
Hot food not just for vegans
I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review. This book is not just for vegans! If you enjoy fresh, flavorful, easy to make recipes this book it for you. Great photography throughout and easy to find ingredients make up most of the recipes. Breakfast Stuff Lunch Stuff The Bowl Bible Dinner Stuff Snacks, Staples, and Saucy Stuff Sweet Stuff A new recipe for all your moods! Great gift book too!
Great book with one exception
I really like this book. I’ve made quite a few dishes that have all turned out great. An interesting part of the book is that several recipes use leftovers from other recipes. I think this is both good & bad. For example last week I made the tortilla soup. With the leftovers I made the enchiladas. Now this week I was wanting to make the chipotle cheese fries. But they require 1cup of leftover tortilla soup. Which I don’t have. So I have to wait until I have leftover soup to make this recipe. Which is a bummer. So I can be good to use up leftover but suck to wait until you have them to make certain recipes.
Delicious Plant-Powered Recipes
Although I am not vegan, I've been trying to eat plant-based meals several times a week for both health and environmental benefits. This is an excellent cookbook for both experienced vegans and those looking to dip their toe into a more meat-free lifestyle. I have always been hesitant to use vegan cheeses and meat substitutes, but the recipes in Hot for Food - All Day provide easy ways to incorporate these into familiar dishes. My favorite recipe so far is Kabocha Wonton Ravioli with Miso Butter - try it! So so good. I've received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free an unbiased review.
Lauren knows great food
Simply put, Lauren knows great food and she goes above and beyond to help the home cook achieve delicious results with minimal effort. I have made the lemon chia loaf, clubhouse sandwich, corn chowder and pink beet caramel popcorn, each recipe a winner. Not only that, I was able to use the corn chowder leftovers to "level up" and make a cacio e pepe pasta using the soup as a base ingredient for the sauce. The "level up" aspect with the focus of repurposing leftovers is genius, I'm thrilled to have this book in my collection and will return to it again and again. The photos and layout are also A++++.
Great take on tasty vegan cooking
I am looking to change my family's diet to vegan/plant based. This cookbook looks like a perfect tool to assist with this transition. There are base recipes with variations using leftovers from the base recipe. Example is Tortilla Soup with Red Sauce Enchiladas and Chipotle Chees Fries. There are also suggested variations in the Tortilla Soup to use instead of jackfruit. There is a section on building bowls. This cookbook does use oil, sugar and salt so if you are looking for whole food plant based cookbook without added oil sugar and salt this cookbook will not suffice. I've received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
Comfort vegan food
Although i am not a vegan eater, this books gave me great ideas for those nights where i just want to skip the animal protein(which i am trying now more and more). Includes many vegan options for traditional sandwiches and pastas. My only concern is that it includes sometimes processed items (like processed vegan cheeses which are too processed for my taste). But overall good recipes like cauliflower steaks with spaghetti agile e olio, or easy brussels sprouts pasta. I received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review!
