Great new artists

I was so disappointed when I heard that Mike Mignola was going to take a break from drawing Hellboy, and hand the job off to other artists. This book has assuaged my worries. What a cool collection of stories and art. I like that the artists aren't trying to draw like Mignola. They each have their own style of drawing horror. Having said that, The Crooked Man, one of the longer stories in this tome, could happen without Hellboy. It's a fantastic story, and I loved it, but Hellboy's adds nothing to it. He ends up being just some big, red observer. It's kinda bizarre. Regardless, I have to highly recommend Volume 4 for any Hellboy fan! If you're new to Hellboy, start with Volume 1; it's still my favorite so far. You won't be disappointed!

If you've come to Volume 4...

...then you probably already know what to expect from Mike Mignola, and he doesn't disappoint. The Troll King and The Crooked Man are dark, mature modern reinterpretations of mixed myths and represent Mignola at the pinnacle of his ability. The art style is a bit different than fans may be used to (I think this is the first Library Edition with another illustrator), however, it still maintains the flow and atmosphere to fit the story. The book itself, like the previous three, is gorgeous and well-constructed with cloth-bound covers - I wish my Absolute Editions of the Sandman series were produced to the same specs. Highly recommended!

Wonderful collections...

The Hellboy Library editions are gorgeous and well-made collections, well worth the price if you are a fan of Hellboy, Mignola, or just darn good comics that deviate from the costume-clad norm. Volume 4 continues Hellboy's travels, introducing new artists and such to the mix (which would normally make me twitchy but works rather well here). These are a must have if you are already a fan, and it will not take long for you to fall in love with this series if you are a newbie. Highly recommended!

The Best Hellboy Shorts

Mignola always writes the Hellboy short subjects to be so interesting, that you require little of the mythos to follow along, but knowing the overall story adds much weight to them. These are my favorite Hellboy standalone stories, and all the art, especially that of Richard Corben is fantastically unusual and engrossing for a modern comic book.

Good art and story

The mixture of the story line and Rich Corbin's art takes the Crooked Man to new levels. Very good rendetions of what Hellboys early days were like. One of the best Library Editions.

What I've Come to Expect

If you've bought these as they come out, you know that the quality is excellent, and the tales are terrific. I always felt the construction was beautiful, but there are flaws. The glossy pages absorb fingerprints, and the fabric cover attracts lint. For that reason, I wear a cheep pair of clean work gloves when I read the Library Editions. This one of course features a new art style that is very compatible with the old style. I quite like it. Well done.

Playing catch up

I was buying each edition as they came out, but fell behind. These editions are great. If you've seen the movies, and want to discover all there is about Hellboy, the bound library editions are a good way to delve in. They are worth the price.

Some of the Best Stories

Many of the stories in this volume are short stories, and gives the reader lots of choice bits in Hellboy's adventures. The Hydra and the Lion is in this one, and is one of my favorite Hellboy stories, period.

this was a gift to my son...

volume four is the weakest thus far.

i am not sure if the production costs have gone down but my copy of volume four seems cheaper than the previous three. i accidentally got some drops of water on the cover and the image on the front cover came right off. seemed to be a very cheap glue/paper used. aside from that, i love hellboy and my favorite thing about hellboy is mignola's artwork. the longest story in this volume is not illustrated by him which normally does not bother me, the alternate artists in the bprd series are just fine. but this artist simply does nothing for me, i was very distracted from the story by his very strange sense of facial features and scale. it might be just me, but i could not enjoy the one story in this volume that made up over half the book. like a previous reviewer pointed out, the story could have had hellboy removed from the plot and not have altered the story at all. other than that, i am still happy with the end product, i am a completest and if i must have volume 4 to complete the set, then i will have to enjoy it.

Mike Mignola's Hellboy Library Edition Vol. 4

Almost didn't buy this one because it's the first Library Edition with other artists drawing Hellboy. I shouldn't have worried. I love Richard Corbin's art & he does a great job on Hellboy. Plus, there's still lots of Mike Mignola's art as well. I love the large format & the book feels really substantial holding it in your hands. I've got the first four editions & plan to get all eventually. A great edition to MY library.

good but not enough

Compared tot he first three volumes, this fourth volume is quite disappointing :( I thought the story of "strange places" would continue and have an interesting plot, but it was quite the contrary, I would not recommend this volume unless you want to read a lot of short-stories of Hellboy, some of them pointless and lacking of a good plot. Still if you're a collector like me, the edition is going to shine at your bookshelf.

Just another TPB Hardcover

If you've picked up any other hardcover for the Hellboy library editions this is just the same. It has bigger and nicer looking graphics than the tbps or the comics themselves. Content wise, it's nothing more than the tbps. Quality wise the Hellboy library editions are always lacking when it comes to the front/back boards and the spine. It feels like nothing more than a couple of shoe boxes pasted together. Dark Horse HAS made great hardcovers for other series, Umbrella Academy taking the cake, but these Hellboy's are meh.

6, setzen.

A good addition to the series.

The 4th volume of Hellboy Library Edition consists of several short and two long stories featuring our super cool protagonist. I have read the previous three fantastic volumes and this is no doubt a good addition to this series. It is the first volume where other artists got the opportunity to do the drawing for the stories. There are ten stories in this volume. The first and the longest one is "The Crooked Man" which is my personal favourite. The Art of Richard Corben vividly capture the grotesque nature of the story with its surrealistic tone. Really beautiful. There are also some signature Mignola stories like "The Troll Witch", "The Vampire of Prague", In Chapel of Moloch" etc. Highly enjoyable.

Great book

Been loving this Hell boy libary edition set. Paper quality is great. Whole construction and look is amazing.

Library Editions of Hellboy

All 6 of the Library Editions of Hellboy arrived sealed and in pristine condition. I'm satisfied with all of them. The size of the pages, the print, the colouring, all blend together to make the best format to consume Mike Mignola's brilliant creation. If you are a fan of Mike Mignola, or the Hellboy films, or of distinct and dark comic art, this is a must own for your collection!

Art with words

This was an excellent purchase. The high quality printing is worth it alone. I started my collection with the first library edition and have continued to pick up each new one as they are released. Very enjoyable stories and beautiful art. I would recommend this to all Hellboy fans or comic fans who enjoy stories with rich history and occult. You will not be disappointed.

Four Stars

Great series in a great hardcover finish.

Not Mignola

These Storys are NOT written or drawn bei Mignola. He is merely a publisher here. They lack almost completely the style in storytelling und the artwork is way too modern, if you are truly a fan, that has come this far. Skip this bullshit and read Volume 5, although not drawn by Mignola, but pleasantly written by him.
