Since Mike Mignola’s Hellboy first hit the stands in 1993, it has become a cultural sensation, racking up a dozen Eisner Awards and inspiring numerous spinoffs, from a novel line, to video games, to feature films. Now, Dark Horse is pleased to present the comics that started it all, collected in deluxe hardcover editions. Sized at 9" by 12", and handsomely bound to match The Art of Hellboy hardcover, each volume contains two full story-arcs — the equivalent of two trade-paperbacks. Each volume of the Hellboy Library Editions also includes extensive supplemental materials, including previously unreleased sketches and designs.

Hellboy Library Edition Volume 1 collects the first two story-arcs — Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil — with the original introductions by Robert Bloch and Alan Moore and expanded Mignola sketchbook sections.

The true hero of 2020!!!

I am a sucker for anything with superior packaging and presentation and with that said Hellboy Library Edition Volume One from Dark Horse can teach a thing or two to Marvel and DC. I truly wish more titles were presented in this quality hardcover format painstakingly made with attention to detail and true love for the subject matter. Yes, I know that there are some out there but most will run you over a hundred bucks. For thirty dollars not only did a purchase a quality hardcover tome I can display with pride, but Mike Mignola’s art and the story hooked me right in and provided me with a couple of afternoons happily exploring the Hellboy Universe. The Gothic and Victorian themes paired with Mignola’s art made this truly an exceptional work of art and the start of my collection.

The book is amazing but I bought it brand new and it has finger prints on it and tears. Fifty bucks is a lot for a new book to have these damages. The damages on the new book is my only disappointment.

Great introduction to Hellboy and beautifully presented

I had never read the Hellboy comics, only knew the character from having recently seen the first two movies with my son, who thought I might like them. I did like the movies, so thought I would try out the comics and this compendium seemed to be a good way to do it. I can see why people loved it: the graphics are stunning and the storylines/characters are interesting, offbeat. Love the humor. I wound up buying "Hellboy in Hell" to go with it.

It begins

Hellboy fully deserves its reputation as an exceptionally rich, literary set of graphic novels. In my view, Hellboy ranks just below Neil Gaiman's

Fantastic value

The list price is 50 bucks, got it with prime for 24. This is totally worth it. I was amazed at the quality of the binding, the paper grade and gloss. Gonna go ahead and purchase the rest of this novel edition because it may be the best thing I've ever purchased for the money on Amazon, seriously.

Beautiful edition of some of my favorite comics

Beautiful edition of some of my favorite comics. This is honestly the best value I've ever seen for a volume of this caliber. You may not be able to tell it from the pictures, but this thing is HUGE. Everything is high quality and of course, the art and writing are top notch. A must have for Hellboy fans.

Heavy. Arrives completely sealed

Arrived completely sealed and protected in in thick plastic. In case you want to save it unopened. Which my teenage son plans to do. Have no idea what’s inside, but apparently it’s priceless.

Holy crap this thing is huge

Holy crap this thing is huge! The art is beautiful and it's just great to read. Can't wait for Vol 2 to get here.

Beautifully bound edition

This book is beautifully made. Very high quality. Definitely worth it.

Can't recommend this enough

A truly gorgeous edition of the first volume of Hellboy tales. This sits perfectly next to my Art of Mignola hardcover. Can't recommend this enough!

Can't recommend this enough

A truly gorgeous edition of the first volume of Hellboy tales. This sits perfectly next to my Art of Mignola hardcover. Can't recommend this enough!

This "Library Edition" is like Hi-Def for comics

The 2 Hellboy story arcs this volume contains are classics. The introductions are impressive and enjoyable, especially if you're already a fan of the series. If you ARE a fan, these are a great addition (or replacement, if your trade paperback bindings have gone rotten) to your comic collection. This "Library Edition" series features a soft cover and glorious blown up art from the originals. It's like comics in Hi-Def and I love it. You have literally never seen Hellboy look this good. These volumes give the impression of an epic tome, holding wonders unceasing within, which is appropriate. Fantastic content, terricic packaging.

Hellboy Library Edition Vol 1

This collection has to be seen to be appreciated. I actually saw this at a comix store while away on business and immediately knew I had to have it and Amazon had a stellar price I couldn't pass up. This is a beautiful compliment to the Art of Hellboy hardcover released a few years ago. I haven't placed both books next to each other (yet) but I believe they're the same size as they seem to follow the same format. This is the way the Hellboy books should be read, the larger (then the original comic book size) print and vibrant colors will make your eyes bleed with joy. That is if you get weepy looking at beautiful artwork from a master at the top of his game. 5 stars just isn't a high enough rating.

Hellboy Volume 1

An all around great book. The storyline is awesome, very creative and highly original. A demon is summoned from hell by the nazis with the purpose of bringing the apocalypse, but is instead found by the americans and raised to help mankind. Though I don't much like the art of the series, not thats its bad, just alot mores implistic thatn I'm used to. And the library edition is well worth the extra money. The only drawback to it is that the cloth cover seems to attract dust, buut other than that, I'd recommend it to any and every one.

The concept art

I love seeing Mike Mignolas concept art and that alone was worth the purchase

Reminded me why Hellboy is my favorite series.

It had been more than a couple years since I had sat down to enjoy this title. I stared buying Hellboy while it was still relatively new to shelves because Mignola's art was so different, in a very good way. Having been a collector for quite some time, my tastes have developed and changed over the years. I was between jobs in the late nineties and stopped collecting for two years, and lost a lot of continuity. I thought that collecting deluxe hardcover editions would be a great way to catch up on many titles. This edition was one of the best buys so far. I tore through it and immediately renewed my love for Red and the crew. Being able to read this series in order is almost as great as being able to drink in every detail in these huge format books. The overall quality oh these editions is so nice that I went online and bought volumes 2 thru 6! The bindings are super durable and the paper is excellent and these books will last a good long time. They look great on my shelves and I am so happy to have filled the gaps I missed when I took my uqqwanted hiatus from buying. If you are a fan of Hellboy or if you want to see why the comic is far far better than the films, then you must buy this book. For the price you just cannot find a better title anywhere. Thanks to Dark Horse for their attention to detail and unwavering adherence to producing such quality volumes in which to put forth one of the all time best titles in comic book history PERIOD.

Great Christmas Gift for my Grandson!

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my grandson, so have not read the book myself. My grandson really loves the book!

Beautiful

Where does Hellboy begin? Right here in a fantastic oversized hardcover! Mint condition and beautiful art!

Beautiful product

A beautiful product in every way. Worth more than what I paid for it.

Great book.

Gave this to my 18 year old grandson and he loved it. Nicely done!

Big Stuff

Big, bold, beautiful book for Hellboy fans, collectors and coffee-table book enthusiasts.

Absolute perfection wrapped in delight, these books are among some of my favorite in my collection. Without even touching on the amazing content, the book alone is worth admiration. Massive vinyl covers protect plus-sized pages of thick cardstock. Mike Mignola’s art is so clear and crisp, with no loss in quality, it almost distracts from the amazing story. Hellboy, the most “human” hero I’ve read, is a joy to follow. Mignola captured lightning in a bottle with this series, and it’s no wonder that it has been running for over twenty years. Though the price may be steep, bite the bullet, and make the purchase. You won’t regret it.

Absolutely Incredible

This volume was my introduction into the world of Hellboy, and let me just say that I am impressed. Not only is the story both intriguing and engrossing, but it's also just plain fun. The writing is great, and the art is gorgeous, especially in this format. The inks and lines are sharp, the paper is very high quality, and the extras are well worth checking out. The cover, as another reviewer noted, does tend to get dirty quickly, but it's easy to clean just by wiping it off. This is definitely one of the best collections of a comic book I've seen, and it's well worth the price. If you're a fan of Hellboy, I'm guessing you own this already, and if you've ever been curious about Hellboy, or comics in general, you should definitely check this out. I've already pre-ordered volume 2, and I'll be getting any others Dark Horse wants to put out.

Essential for Hellboy

If you want to get into Hellboy, I highly recommend this first volume.

Great edition extremely cheap for this price!

Dark Horse delivers another great library edition

Great story. Wonderful art. The library editions from Dark Horse are the best you can get for the price. Where Marvel and DC charge $100 to $150 for comparable items, Dark Horse puts out an affordable edition with superior construction. The pages are thick and the colors are rich. Great buy.

A great book for Hellboy fans

A great book for Hellboy fans. I am just sorry that there is stories in this Volume that also appear in Volume 2.

Big, giant, glorious HELLBOY! (volume one)

This first volume of HELLBOY LIBRARY EDITIONS is a welcome addition to any serious comic reader's collection. It matches the superb ART OF HELLBOY hardcover from a few years back in both size and binding and contains the complete story lines SEED OF DESTRUCTION and WAKE THE DEVIL as well as an extensive sketchbook section featuring many of creator Mike Mignola's early sketches (with very few, if any, repeated images from the ART OF HELLBOY tome). The only thing missing from the original trade paperback collections are the pin-ups by other artists but, really, once you see how beautiful Mignola's work looks printed in this oversize format you hardly miss them. The colors (by Mark Chiarello on SEED and James Sinclair on WAKE) are vividly reproduced on bright, glossy paper (be careful to avoid fingerprinting, though). Any fan of HELLBOY, Mike Mignola, or comics in general should look into adding this book to their library. I look foward to volume 2.

A beautiful hardcover collection.

This book is gorgeous. If you are a Hellboy fan then it's a definite buy!

A Must Own Edition

This book is an absolute must own for not just Hellboy fans, but for those who also just enjoy comics, horror, and art. A treasured acquisition to be sure.

This is a huge heavy sturdy book. Excellent art and excellent story telling

This is a huge heavy sturdy book. Excellent art and excellent story telling. One of my favorite hardcovers in my collection. The art takes a bit of getting used to but it will grow on you and matches the story feel and theme.

excellent

looks great. beautiful artwork. excellent purchase.

not into comics but i loved this

I really enjoy the movie so i thought i'd give this a read, despite never reading a comic before in my life other than a few glances. not to offend, but really found them to be ridiculous, childish material. that was, before i read this.. THIS has opened my eyes to a whole new world. wow, just wow. this has definitely made me see that i have been way to quick to judge this medium, and that is my fault that will be corrected. anyhow, i really loved this read and found myself not being able to stop turning pages. completely engrossing on every level, visual and story wise. everyone else has said it much better than i ever could, so I just leave you with my huge thumbs up!

best book i own.

the pages are so clean. the quality of the hard back bindings is amazing. the intro by the writers, creators and artist make this version feel even more personal. cant wait to ownthe whole collection.

My son absolutely love this item I felt I got a great deal

My son absolutely love this item I felt I got a great deal

First experience with Hellboy comics. Loved it.

The Hellboy films were a great source of inspiration to me (I'm a writer). I've thoroughly enjoyed both the films and the animated adventures, and I love the way the cast brought the characters to life. Yet despite this, I'd never read the Hellboy comics, even though I was well-aware of their existence. This was my first experience with the series, and I was very happy with it. The art isn't quite was I was expecting. If you've seen the movies, you'll know Hellboy seems rather human-like, whereas the comics make him out like something more of an ape. At the same time, Abe Sapien, who was slender and athletic in the movie, is a bit bulkier here; only Liz seems to have the most resemblance to her movie counterpart. Not that these changes bothered me, but they were kind of different to what I was already accustomed to. The BPRD's tech also seems to be a bit more sci-fi-ish, with the team sporting jetpacks and the like. As for the style, it's very unlike other comics I've read (note: I don't usually read comics unless they're limited series), such as Marvel's Civil War and The Ultimates; these use bright colors and flesh out what sometimes seems as excessive detail (see Ultimates 2's Giant Man newspaper clipping), Hellboy seems to focus on dark colors without an emphasis on detail. It feels somewhat minimalistic, but it's not a detraction; where the aforementioned comics seem to favor art over story, this one takes both into account, creating a better comic book experience than much of the others I've exposed myself to. Story-wise, the movies take cues from the series, which I enjoyed noticing (Ünmensch and Mr Wink); there's enough differences in both to classify them as separate entities, but enough similarities to label them as part of the same franchise (unlike other adaptations, which bastardize their source material). Enough with the movie comparisons though, let's get to the story. The first story, Wake the Devil, was much more enjoyable than I was expecting. After getting used to the characters' differences in appearance, I discovered that most of the personalities that made me enjoy the movies (save for Abe Sapien. I should stop now) were still there, especially Hellboy's humor (except him saying 'oh crap.' Okay, now I'll stop). The story was presented in a fast-paced way, but it still gave us enough of a breather to absorb the information at our own pace. I didn't feel at any point lost in the story. Wake the Devil was not as solid (personal taste, really) but it was also enjoyable; the humor in both stories was pretty dark, especially Hellboy's. The funny thing is, I read pretty much everything he said in Ron Perlman's voice; by the time I was done, I wasn't really sure if Hellboy had been made for Perlman, or the other way around. The second one wasn't as enjoyable though, but it was mostly personal taste reasons. First, I felt like it wasn't as tightly written as the other one. Things seemed to be happening at random, and there were some parts I felt were just filler. The ending itself pushed my suspension of disbelief in more ways than one, and I was skeptical if there was really any effort put into the execution. Even so, it was still beyond what I usually expect in comic books, and I closed the book thinking 'money well-spent.' What I really enjoyed most though were the concept art sketches after both stories were finished. There's an entire section devoted to black and white pre-hellboy sketches, including characters that made it into the comics, characters that were modified for the comics, etc; this was perhaps my favorite part, as it explains both the origin of the sketches, their intended purpose, and whether they eventually evolved into a character or were scrapped altogether. I usually love concept art more than the final art itself, so this part was delicious eye-candy for me. To conclude, this collected edition is a great buy, both for Hellboy movie and comic book fans. The storytelling and writing is top notch (even if it gets a bit farfetched at times) the art work is beautiful, and the special features at the end are like icing on a cake. I would definitely keep on reading the series.

Five Stars

Amazing collection and artwork!

Hellboy is super cool ))

Bought for a gift. Everything is great.

A Wonderful Edition of a Wonderful Comic!

I have been a Hellboy fan since 2001, when I started reading Conqueror Worm. It was one of the most rewarding comic book reads that I had found in a long time, going into the same category that Planetary and 100 Bullets were in in terms my reading modern comics. This Library Edition collects the first two stories, Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil. It's oversized and contains a wonderful selection of sketches of by Mike Mignola and a new foreword by Hellboy Editor, Scott Allie. Since it's now out of print, I'd say this is more for the Hellboy enthusiast than a normal reader but it's the perfect place to start reading this masterpiece of the comic book medium.

Worth it.

Probably the best collection of comics I've ever bought, which Is saying something cause I buy a lot of collections. But this one is extra nice with the material on the cover and back and how great the pictures look. Definitely worth the money, and if you do get it make sure to read mignolas introduction page.

I always enjoyed the Hellboy movies but never had read the comics until I bought this. I have to say this could be the best comic I've ever read. I'm blown away by how perfect this comic is. If you are unsure please give it a try.

If you are going to read Hellboy...

Beautiful book! Anyone familiar with Hellboy or Mike Mignola's work know's the caliber of story you can expect. But something can really be said for this edition. Solid construction, really showcases the art in a way far superior to the other bindings.

I guess it's a classic or whatever

It's mostly pictures with hardly any words. What's the deal?

Great book

High quality printing. Cover is felt like. First have of the books pages are printed on black glossy paper (so beware of fingerprints) with the 2nd half on white paper.

Hellboy!!!!

A fantastic archive edition of Hellboy. This is printed in a larger format on glossy type paper to really show off the artwork. Hellboy and company have never looked better! My only issue, is that the cloth binding seems to catch a lot of dust.

Textured cover

Purchased this as a gift for my guy, he loved it. He especially liked the cover, its textured and soft. He stated he was enjoying the read so far.

Five Stars

Beautifully bound edition that does justice to Mignola's gorgeous artwork.

Cant put it down

One of my favorite series

Great quality.

Masterful. Delivered quickly and untouched. Still shrink wrapped. Great quality.

Hellboy rocks

Very nice book, extra big pages.

Fantastic Quality

I have been a Hellboy fan for many years, so I knew what I was getting with the story. It is the same horror, and adventure tale that is, in my opinion, the pinnacle for what a mature modern comic should be. The real story here though is the quality of the book itself. It has almost a velvet texture on the outside with a beautiful pastel inlay of Hellboy in action. The pages are quite large, but the artwork does not appear distorted in any way. It has a solid construction and should be able to take a good bit of handling without much problem. I would venture to say this is the best option for collecting Hellboy's story.

gorgeous editions of Hellboy

Beautiful book, showed up a week eary-just in time for xmas!!!! I bought volume one and two and it made a very geeky boyfriend estatic. I'll probably get the remaining volumes through here as gift giving occasions come up. Great service and my books were not kicked about or beat up on arrival. Thank you.

Great

Great condition great price took almost no time to ship and an awesome story line looking forward to volume 2

Amazing comic!

Mike Mignola is a modern master, and this volume proves why he is surrounded by so much hype and praise. I cannot stress enough how beautiful, creative, and amazing this comic is. Furthermore, the hardcover is great to look at and is quite durable. It's large though...so be warned you'll need space to read it.

Beautiful Collection

Nothing else to say; an amazing piece of paper to own and a better comic to go with it. For fans of Lovecraft, Batman, and Frank Miller etc.

A very nice volume to have

I'm not going to review the actual comic itself. I think anyone who knows anything about comics, writers and artists, knows that Mike Mignola is awesome and has created something very iconic and great. The volume itself is great, the binding is solid and nice and I like the material that the hardcover is made of. It has the feel of some sort of fabric as opposed to a smooth, glossy finish like most hardcover books. I had a bunch of the original comics and trade paperbacks (the latter of which had bad binding, at least on the first volume because it started to fall apart very soon after reading it through only once) and it's much nicer to have a collection of issues in a bigger format with a nicer binding and hardcover. None of the artwork looks like it has been up scaled from a smaller size so the art looks even more brilliant in this larger format. This is a must have for any fan of Hellboy, the comics or the movies. And really anyone who likes comics should get this as a foray into the really amazing world Mike Mignola created, if they haven't already. This library edition really should set a standard for how future comic franchises should release their respective volumes. This and the Buffy season 8 library editions are some of the best you can get. Highly recommended.

I don't know why I waited so long to get this! Hellboy is a truly great comic series and I would recommend it to any fan of comics or lovecraftian literature. The library edition also looks fantastic on a bookshelf.

Five Stars

Read the series.

Awesome Collection

I have seen all of the Hellboy films and for a long time wanted to check out the comic but comics aren't the best medium for me as they are usually paperback. When I saw this collection I knew I had to check it out and I am so glad I did. This is a beutifully bound book that contains a great story and great artwork within. I would highly suggest this to anyone out there who wants to give Hellboy a try.

This book is absolutely lovely. The images are lovely, the large pages are quite thick, and the cover is a beautiful black almost-velvet material. Very pleased with this purchase.

lovely art and story

Beautiful art and all manner of other great things. If you're a fan of Hellboy this is a fantastic read.

Very impressed

Hasn't been long since i really dove into reading comics, and searching for collections of series in hardbacks (like this one). The Hellboy Library really impressed me, it doesn't look like marvel omnibus or DC absolutes. I thought the cloth cover made it look very unique and stylish (although one reviewer said its a dust magnet, which isn't far from the truth, i liked the limited edition leather cover they made for hellboy seed of destruction which i sadly missed, this is a great collection) I love how big it is and how well the art looks, the quality is fantastic for the price its totally worth every penny, i really can't wait to read more of it and can't wait to put Vol.2 right next to it. (which is already being pre-orderd on amazon :-D) I sure hope they do something like this for B.P.R.D. As well as hope they come out with covers like this for other popular dark horse series!! Only thing i would have liked would have been a higher page count.

Superior quality

Amazing quality hardback book. Beautiful illustration. Would highly recommended!

Gorgeous collection

Beautiful collection-absolutely the best way to collect these. Can't wait to collect the other library editions. Worthwhile addition for any comic collector.

An exelent collection

I just got this book today, and am very pleased with it. The book is wonderful, larger then the older Hellboy collections, but does not sacrifice the quality of the art. There is a new introduction, but other then that it contains the same materials as the two older collections compiled here in. I acquired this to replace my original graphic novels, which are coming apart from repeated reading

It's Hellboy! What else can I say?!

I own every Hellboy TPB out there(including the "Weird Tales" vols). I also own the first 3 Library Editions, and will be getting Vol.4 as soon as I can afford it. The following is my quick review of this volume, as well as the "Hellboy" series itself and its creator, Mike Mignola: The book is gorgeous. It's an oversized felt hardcover with wonderfully thick and glossy pages, and many extras(intros, sketches with commentary, etc.). Needless to say, the stories are genius. If you've ever read a Hellboy story, you know what I'm talking about. Mignola is the best at what he does. That is, nobody can write a fantasy/action/adventure/horror/weird/humorous story like him. He's the King. This massive book contains the first 2 TPBs(which are both fantastic by the way). I really don't know what to say about the stories contained here aside from the fact that I LOVE them! Hellboy is one of the coolest characters ever created. It's tied for my favorite series of all-time with, "The Mice Templar"(and possibly DH's "Conan" - which I've only read 3 books of so far, but have been blown away by 2 of them and very satisfied with the other). Concerning "Hellboy", Mignola writes and draws such compelling and distinctive stories that, as I stated above, he has no equal when it comes to writing these kinds of stories. And no, I don't know how to really put his kinds of stories into words. They belong to a genre all their own. I haven't read anything else quite like them. They defy any one category and fit partially within many. His stories are heavily influenced by his love of mythology and folklore. While I find these two things in and of themselves to be interesting most of the time, sometimes they just aren't that entertaining. Mike knows how to deliver the goods when it comes to an entertaining read. With "Hellboy", he expertly weaves ideas from old tales of mythology and folklore with his own modern take on things and fresh new ideas to create these very cool and exciting tales that pay homage to the very stories that inspire much of his work. His prose is "blue-collar" in a sense, yet elegant, sophisticated and poetic simultaneously. His style of artwork belongs to him and him alone. No one else draws like Mike. His use of simple and bold linework along with his orchestration of where he wants the deep blacks and other vivid, mood-changing colors that he wants the colorist(in this case, the legendary Dave Stewart) to utilize make for a magnificent-looking book! Through his use of uniquely sequential panel-to-panel storytelling skills, and perspectives/angles that separate his work from anyone else, he invites you into his beautifully strange and wonderful world in such a way that you feel compelled to continue to delve deeper into his stories as you pore over the powerful images from page to page, imbued with a desire to find out what happens next. I FEEL something when I read "Hellboy". That is something I always look for in a graphic novel(or any kind of book really). And you find it in spades here in this "Hellboy Library Ed. Vol.1". I could go on forever talking about how huge a fan I am of "Hellboy" and Mike Mignola in general. But don't worry, I won't. I just wanted to give you an idea of how talented this Mignola guy is if this book is to be your first introduction to his work. For everyone else, I'm sure you can understand my desire to brag a little bit on this legendary comic book character and equally legendary creator. Buy this book and all of the other volumes as soon as you can. You won't regret it. And oh yeah, "Hail to the King, baby!"

Boy from hell

Near the end of World War II, the evil Rasputin summoned a creature from another world -- a little red demon baby. And so starts Mike Mignola's distinctly offbeat "Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil," two interconnected action-factory stories with a bright-red demon as its anti-hero. Mignola happily crams this rather brief tale with Lovecraftian horrors, mythic demons, a cursed mansion, a vampire in an old castle, and a truly malevolent villain who wants to destroy the world. Decades after Hellboy was summoned into this world, his adoptive father Professor Bruttenholm recounts what little he can remember of a doomed expedition to the north pole, along with the three Cavendish brothers. Then a grotesque frog creature attacks Bruttenholm, killing him instantly -- moments before Hellboy returns the favor. Soon after, Hellboy and his companions Abe Sapien (fish-man) and Liz Sherman (pyrokinetic) arrive at cursed Cavendish Manor, unaware that the mansion's owner is in league with Rasputin. Then ghastly frog-creatures kidnap Liz and attack Hellboy, as Rasputin reveals his presence to the demon/man that he considers his servant -- and if Hellboy won't serve him, he'll used Liz's power instead. But that adventure is not the end of Hellboy's clashes with Rasputin. Sent to find an ancient vampire in Romania ("Paprika chicken, baby!"), he runs afoul of a bunch of Nazis who serve Rasputin's spirit -- and a bunch of mythic creatures, including the vampiric Giurescu, who serve a ghastly, immortal lamia in the depths of his castle. Elsewhere, Abe is falling into a trap of Rasputin's, and Liz's powers run amuck when her team finds an alchemist's lab with a seemingly dead homunculus. And Hellboy's fight with the lamia has shocking repercussions, when he finds himself hurtling into a darkness where his true purpose is revealed -- and he must choose what his destiny will be. Vampiric snake-women, Baba Yaga, immortal sorcerers, grotesque frog monsters, disembodied heads, a Nazi woman in an iron maiden, and a walking skeleton. Oh yeah, and a Lovecraftian lake monster with way too many tentacles. Mike Mignola knows how to craft a monster-filled universe, where a demonic anti-hero seems downright normal. And the first two books about him are technically separate stories, but they're more like two halves of the same tale -- and while each starts relatively quietly, they rapidly escalate into haunting, grotesque action-adventures set in half-ruined buildings where only monsters and statues still dwell. And while a few plot threads are left hanging in the second half of the story, Mignola does a solid job plotting these. He also knows how to use dialogue for atmosphere as few authors can ("Witches, striges, vampir... ghosts come forth from their tombs..."), but also utilizes Hellboy's acid wit to lighten the mood ("Not gonna happen... 'cause you're very very ugly and YOU HAVE A GIANT SNAKE BODY!"). Hellboy himself is a classic anti-hero -- despite his red skin, bulky body and sawed-off horns, he's very human in attitude, with an understated love for his friends and his adoptive father. Throughout these stories he's faced by hints of what he truly is and what he's expected to become by the infernal players, but his good heart won't have it. And his snappy wit ("Insolent beast! Troglodyte!" "Big talk for a guy with no pants") only makes him more lovable. It's also worth mentioning that this edition is simply beautiful. The heavy cloth binding gives the book plenty of resilience to repeated readings, especially since the paper it's printed on is thick and glossy. It makes Mignola's art -- with its vivid colours and heavy, thick shadows -- even more vivid. "Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil" compiles the first two books of Hellboy's adventures, and shows why Mike Mignola is such a well-loved, well respected graphic novelist.

Constantly surprising and more fun than most superheroes ever get to have

Hellboy was first introduced in a comic book in 1993, and as you can imagine, many collections of those works have been published through the years. His origins begin in Seed of Destruction, and his long story continues in several more (Wake the Devil, The Right Hand of Doom, Strange Places, among others). Luckily, any book in the Hellboy storyline is a good jumping-on point, as creator Mike Mignola keeps the story open to both old and new readers, never convoluting the tale in the insular way that some older series can develop. Hellboy is, as his name would imply, a demon, but fortunately, he fights against evil rather than for it. He first came to earth in 1944, summoned by the Nazis as a tool they hoped to use to conquer the world. Instead, he became a force for good and even became a hero in the United States. He joined the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) and with them he battles against some horrible and horrifying enemies. While it may sound dark, Hellboy is pure escapist fun of the kind that the comics industry was built on. More that that, though, the books build on classic works of fantasy, including the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. Mignola has always kept a rare and intelligent sense of humor working throughout all the books. While Hellboy "works" in the superhero vein, its solid foundation in the literary world makes it constantly surprising and more fun than most superheroes ever get to have. -- John Hogan

A consistently superior comic

Any comic book fan would be delighted to have this on their shelf. If need a gift for a friend who reads comics, is into anime, or any of that geeky stuff, BUY THIS. He will thank you, I guarantee it. Here's why: When I tell people I read comics, they only picture spandex-wearing, huge-breasted women and overly-muscular men lifting cars and shooting lazers out of their fingertips. Hellboy is the mainstream savior of that common misunderstanding. The art: The drawing style alone is enough to let anyone know that this is a very special comic. Every character is well-developed, every object in the background carefully placed, the use of shadows is artful and foreboding. Every frame deserves thoughtful study. Hellboy himself: Hellboy refuses to submit to his own dark fate, and for that, we love him. He's not the type of hero who doesn't bat an eye when some crazy nine-legged giant lizard-creature attacks him. He reacts the way any of us would, with a "Holy jeez!" and for that we love him some more. He cares for his friends, and allows his own sense of justice to govern his actions. His compassion for those around him is infectious and endearing. The books: This book is one in a series of a collected series of Hellboy comics. It's beautifully bound, I love having it in my collection. I was happy to buy it for a friend, who was so impressed, he bought the rest of the "Library Edition" Hellboy books (and he didn't read comics before then). Any comic book fan would be delighted to have this on their shelf.

Great Book To Start Off Your Hellboy Collection

I have not read Hellboy before this. Actually I did - but it was a Chinese translation of "Seed of Destruction" that I picked up years ago. Seeing that my Chinese sucked, I wouldn't actually call that "reading". Of course, Mike Mignola's artwork is probably enough of a pull to visit the world of Hellboy and BPRD. Picked up the "Hellboy Library Edition Volume One" some weeks back on a whim and enjoyed every single page of it. This handsome, leather-bound, oversized volume collects the first two arcs "Seed of Destruction" and "Wake the Devil". I was told that Hellboy stories got far better after these arcs (co-written by veteran John Byrne) but this is where it all began. Mignola was still "looking for his voice" here but you see the beginnings of the greatness here in these tales showing the advent of the big red guy and the early appearances of Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman (later of BPRD fame). If you've enjoyed the movies by Guillermo Del Toro, it's time to pick up the original masterpieces. This volume also comes with loads of DVD-styled extras including Mignola's sketchbooks, convention doodles, essays, etc.

Spectacular

In the tradition of Marvel's huge Omnibus collections, and DC's wonderful Absolute Editions, Hellboy is now here in a deluxe hardcover edition from Dark Horse. This first volume of the Hellboy Library Edition encompasses the first two storyarcs in Mike Mignola's spectacular series, Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil. Both stories are bound in this handsome oversized hardcover, along with a good deal of extras to boot. With the new Hellboy sequel on the way, now has never been a better time to get introduced to, or re-acquainted with, Hellboy, the rest of B.P.R.D., and the wonderful world that Mike Mignola created years ago. All in all, if you've missed out on Hellboy over the past few years, this first Library Edition is an absolute must own, and a perfect introduction to the wonderful world of Mike Mignola's Hellboy.

This is the way a masterpiece ought to be collected and read

I dove into Hellboy without having read any of it before. I'd figure if I'm going to give it a try I'd go big, so I got this big book. It has the equivalent of two trade paperbacks in it. First, the quality of the book: It's probably the best quality graphic novel I have. The cover has some sort of thin cloth like material on it and it's textured with the picture on the cover being a thick card that's firmly planted. The binding is very solid and I think the pages are sewn in, not glued, which means this'll last longer. The pages are very thick and firm and seem to be built to last. Second, the stories: This book collects "Seed of Destruction" and "Wake the Devil". Seed of Destruction was absolutely awesome! It's Hellboy's origin story and the writing was top notch! It's got a lot of mystery and action with a HUGE payoff! Wake the Devil in my opinion was a good story, but I didn't enjoy it as much as Seed of Destruction. Third, the art: Mike Mignola's art is iconic and unique in the industry of comics. The art in this book is fantastically reproduced and looks amazing in this giant book! The book also has a pretty decent size sketchbook in the back including Mignola's first ever drawing of Hellboy. It's no wonder Hellboy's original series is considered a classic in the medium of comics and this is the way that a masterpiece should be presented and read! Highly recommended for fans wanting to give Hellboy a shot or even long time fans!

Hellboy Volume 1 Hard Cover edition

This wonderfully bound and collected work of art/book covers the acclaimed Hellboy series and movies. The book Hellboy Volume 1 collects the first two story-arcs-Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil-with the original introductions by Robert Bloch and Alan Moore. This is one of the more important collections within the Hellboy series, as the two story arcs along with some bits from BPRD that show how Hellboy was found and discovered, are spread across multiple series and volumes, which can be found here in this book. You get to learn how Hellboy was discovered, and what happens through most of the series that is also covered in the movies. This is like owning everything; the even better part is that there is a volume two that covers the Golden Army saga, and even more of Hellboy's beginnings. In all this is a high quality book that will make just about every Hellboy fan jump for joy to get their hands on this volume and its companion volume. Hellboy is one of the more fascinating characters to be developed by Alan Moore, and goes back to many of his roots with 2000AD and work that he did previously. There are excellent story lines, wonderful art, sturdy and very durable to tolerate a lot of reading or general book abuse. The story lines are assorted with Hellboy traveling the world solving problems and generally thumping the bad people. What is nice is that these are really collections of many of Mignola's shorter stories, with a continuity to make them all make sense to the reader. One of the better Hellboy collections out there, well worth getting and holding on to, both volumes make an awesome present or gift to anyone who has any interest in Hellboy at all. This book is a 5 star book, well worth getting, reading, owning, and enjoying.

Great volume of Hellboy goodness!

This is an amazing volume! It contains many Hellboy stories all in one book. Each book included in this compilation included has a nice intro and dedication. There's also a very cool sketchbook section in the back and some other extras. The stories themselves are of course amazing. If you love Hellboy but don't own the early comics, this book might be the one you want to pick up. The binding is very well made. The cover is sturdy and coated in fabric. The book itself is big and the paper is thick and glossy. It's the most well constructed book of comics I've ever seen!

Large Gorgeous Format

Aside from the movie a few years back, this is my first foray into Hellboy. After hearing about the new movie coming later, I knew I needed to start reading Hellboy. Fortunately, this interest coincided with the release of the Library Edition. This book is gorgeous! A comic of this magnitude in terms of art & storytelling needs this large format. There are so many awesome panels, you could spend all day just looking at the art and not even reading! This is THE place to start for anyone interested in Hellboy, and like another reviewer said, a great item to replace worn TPBs. Combine hardback with larger pages and you have a definite winner!

Great looking conversation piece

Purchased as a gift an I am very happy with the book. It is large, made quality materials, and have beautiful pictures. This isn’t my cup of tea, but my son loves it.

stop dust

The cloth cover could be a dust catcher (I'll never know). Just buy the 2.5 gallon Ziploc / Gladlock bags and you will have no problem. Just treat it like a large 33 dollar sandwich. Or go down to any Fedex, DHL, UPS, Post Office and pick up a large plastic mailer (non padded) their free (but the Ziploc bags you can see through) Hellboy art is nicer blow up to larger than comic size. Also in Vol 1 has two story arcks and his first two short storys (one shots) in it. All in all a great buy.

Arrived timely.

Just what I expected, clean package.

A must for fans of the series

The Hellboy series is something I always found interesting and fun, from the dark and crude yet expressive art style to the sci-fi but maybe campy plot. The Library Edition of this series is well made with large pages which allow you to appreciate the artwork even more so, with introductions and sketches common with these "collected" editions. However my only complaint would be, as others have pointed out, the soft cloth covering of this Library Edition. Although I like the soft "book cover" with Hellboy's name seemingly displayed in gold bold letters on the front, the cover tends to attract dust very fast. I would reccomend this book as a must buy for fans of the Hellboy series overall.

buy this, you won't regret it

i forgot how good "seeds of destruction" is. i also forgot the difference between "seeds" and the first movie. the art just looks better on the bigger pages, i found myself just staring and taking it all in. my only complaint is the cover material. if you have any pets this will be covered in hair, i wish it would have come with a slip case.

Nicest Collection I Have Purchased

The Hellboy Library edition is absolutely wonderful. The cover and format are beautiful. The paper is perfect. And the story...well, there is a reason this book got the all-star treatment. Hellboy is one of the most original comic stories to come out in many years. Buy it!

Loved the book, plain and simple

I'll keep this simple and short. The story captivated me and keeps me interested, if you are expecting it to match the movie, it doesn't, it's better!!! As for the construction of the physical book; I think it's well made. I personally like the feel the fabric outer covering, the only downside I've found is how my dogs' hairs stick to the cover. It's not a big deal thou they come off easy.

vey nice collection, and a great way to get hellboy

This book is great. It's on par with DC's absolute editions. The book is a huge over sized edition of the comics of the first two collections. Which at the price here its is totally worth it. There are great extras such as a sketch book at the end and some others. I would have liked a collection of covers as well, but in such a great edition and great value it is total worth it for any hellboy fan.

Husband LOved It!

My husband loves graphic novels and loves everything from Maus to Sin City, Batman, and Persepolis. He really loved the story in this and thought it was a good gift

This is is also a great story that I enjoyed reading as well

I bought this as a birthday gift for my artist/illustrator husband. He really admires Mike Mignola. This is is also a great story that I enjoyed reading as well.

Outstanding Quality

This is an astoundingly high quality edition. The quality of the binding and the paper is top-notch, a suitable match for the quality of the art and writing.

Cool but...

This book is great, the art looks amazing on this size. My only complain is the black fabric on the hardcover, man, that thing is a dust magnet, just wait and see. My wife thinks the exterior looks elegant, I think it looks cheap, I guess you need to see and feel it. I like better the Seed of Destruction hardcover, however, the art looks much better on this new hardcover, and the paper quality is great. Buy it, the exterior may not bother you.

Great book

this book was great came pretty fast and I've ;already Read it can't wait to get the other volumes

not enough

the quality of the book is phenomenal, the content I'm sure if purchasing, you already know is solid. my complaint lies with the amount of content put into one of these editions. It's not enough. Should be more for the price.

A magnificent introduction to the Hellboy comic universe.

Like many, I was introduced to Hellboy by way of Guillermo del Toro's fabulous films. I've watched them many times and often considered dipping into the comics. When I finally decided to take the plunge, I went top-shelf and got the Library Edition. The most obvious first impression is its size, which is far larger than a standard comic trade. Granted, Hellboy contains the equivalent of two trades, but the most impressive dimensions here are the height and width of the book; which, of course, translates to the page size as well. And this is a good thing for the art. It's for this larger size and better presentation of the art that I selected the Library Edition. The panels are huge and the colours are brilliant ... the art pops off the page very nicely. And due to the larger page-size, I don't find myself needing to bend over the book to see everything or to be able to read each and every word. It's a very relaxing read. I'm no expert on paper selection, but the pages here are made of a high-gloss, thick stock; the stock is of the sort you'd expect to see in something like a high-quality Broadway programme or perhaps poster stock. It's almost like a thin card stock. This, of course, adds physical depth/thickness and weight to the book, which some may find off-putting. I wouldn't want to hold this in a one hand for several minutes, but it sits very comfortably on my lap. There's little point in covering the story content in great detail at this stage. Hellboy is no secret, and you generally know what you're getting into. You'll either like it or you won't. But it's worth noting that this particular volume contains "Seeds of Destruction". This is the first Hellboy story, on which the first Hellboy film was loosely based (along with bits and pieces from other stories). Reading the story now as Mignola originally wrote it, and seeing the film again makes me see very clearly the appreciation that del Toro had for the original work. He didn't do a Zack Snyder and try to translate the book panel-by-panel to the big screen. Instead, he took the original story seeds (pun intended) and gave them a substance all his own...while at the same time keeping true to the overall flavour of Mignola's original. This makes the final result of the film all the more impressive. It is also worth mentioning that there are around 33 pages of "bonus content" at the rear of the book in the way of Mike Mignola's sketchbook and some 2-page short stories which really got Hellboy started. these are a nice addition which you supposedly won't find in the standard trades. Highly recomended.

Don’t buy it from Amazon

Great book, however it was very poorly packed. I bought the 3 first volumes of this masterpiece however all of them arrived damaged due to amazon’s disdain to properly protect books of this quality. If you’re into comics I advise you to read Hellboy, however don’t buy it from amazon!!! You will be disappointed when you open the box and see these masterpieces damaged.

Great quality comic, give it a go!

This is how you do a library version! The binding is incredible, the book itself is huge and looks great on my shelf. The pages are thick and the spine of the book is made in such a way that you can easily read it without bending the paper. As for the comic itself - the art is unique and I've heard some describe it as too stylized. It's definitely weird looking but I think that reflects the strange story and universe of the material. The stories are interesting and the characters are cool, this book definitely got me hooked. This is by far the best hardback comic collection I've ever seen.

Best way to read hellboy

The book itself is pretty huge, no paperback to flip through. Better suited to a patient read with a coffee, it’s a fantastic way to go through the story, lovely detailing on the hardback. Tons of extra art in the back too.

this is hell of a book, bwoy

Never been a fan of the hellboy films, but I do love the comics. Hellboy is a interesting character. This book covers everything from mythology, history, religion, horror. The deluxe edition is definitely worth the purchase. The cover has such a nice feeling to it. Dark horse put the best hardcovers in comics and then image.

An amazing quality

I have to admit that my expectations after reading the reviews were very high. And they were met in 100%, the quality of the book is amazing, the paper, cover, colours. Everything looks just great!

Hellboy for the connoisseur...

If you've purchased the individual HB graphic novels then you'll love this large format, hard cover HB from the maestro MM! I will definitely be paying that little bit extra for the hard cover editions going forward. Comic book Heaven, or Hell, boy!

Essential purchase for any fan of Hellboy

I think Hellboy is one of the best comics of the last decade, and these hardbound volumes are a fabulous way of collecting this title. Included here is the complete Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil, plus more. If you like Hellboy, buy it!

Rich adventures richly presented

What's not to like about Hellboy and we all know these rich stories, but nothing can prepare you for sheer beauty of them in these amazingly crafted books.

Birthday Present

Took me ages to find this! When I first ordered it from somewhere else it tried telling me it would be with me in a month but then three months later I got the hint haha. However, found it again here and it arrived in good time!! THANK YOU!!

This is an excellent quality item, it looks fantastic. The illustrations are fabulous, though I haven't read the whole thing as it was a gift. It arrived quickly too.

Beautifully Bound Book

This book was a gift for my son and really exceeded expectations. It is beautifully bound together and inside the pages are fantastic quality paper. A real collectors peice.

A big beautiful book

This is the best showcase for Mike Mignola's art. It's a big, beautiful book with a premium quality in everything (paper, binder, etc).

Great Quality Hardcover Collection

Awesome collection of Hellboy comics. Like many people, I saw the movies first which got me interested in reading the comics. If you too came from the movies first, the first mini-series, "Seed of Destruction," follows the events of the first Hellboy movie (although you'll notice many differences). The hardcover book its pages feel very premium. Included are the first 2 Hellboy mini-series with all the side stories/issues that came between and after them. If you want to start collecting the complete Hellboy volumes, there are 6 in total.

beautiful and excellet collection

I've never read Hellboy before but love the Hellboy 2 movie (1 was good but come on 2 was beautiful!), very glad I picked up this collection and plan on getting the full library set! Not only are the pages vibrant and printed on high quality paper (with a nice satin finish) the book is bound in a beautiful cover with a velvety finish. Overall this creates a very beautiful and luxurious book, though I would advise against reading it in bed whilst lying down, the cover slipping in my hands and the corner hit me square on the chin! (something that also told me exactly how well put together the book was lol)

Klassiker in neuem Gewand

Amazing presentation!

If you buying this collection I assume you're already familiar with Hellboy, in any case case this is the best way to read these stories. The presentation is top notch thoroughout, art looks amazing on the oversized pages, felt cover and binding are pretty nice touches as well. If you're a fan, this is probably one of the better Hellboy materials out there, and one of the favorites in my collection.

Great comic in an amazing large hardcover format.

The book is truly gorgeous. The comic itself is a fun and unique concept but the book take its further with its large format and extremely high-quality feel. There are a few other comics I'd love to see given such excellent printing. If you are interested at all in reading Hellboy or if you are a fan this format is worth serious consideration.

Great.

The Hellboy Library Edition volume 1 was a great read, I just picked up this because I began reading the Hellboy in Hell series, and I am loving these collected edition. The cloth cover hasn't collected lint really as the other reviews I have read stated. The cloth cover otherwise makes the book a gorgeous piece on your shelf as well. All the sketches in the back are inspiring to see. If you're looking to get into Hellboy, this is a great way to do it.

Hellboy

Must Have

Excellent 100% from the manufacturing of the book to the thick pages. Story and artwork was great can't wait for my next book to show up. Highly Recommended Must Have !!

You have to get this !

Do not ask yourself if you buy this is not. First of all the quality of this hardcover is outstanding. When i received it i was so amazed that i ordered the second volume on the way to be sure that this edition doesnt go back-order. This book is the tale of the begining of Hellboy*. You know who summoned it, how he get his gun and see him in his firts writtend adventures and fights ( wich isnt long to start ). And for the price i never ordered something of that quality for this low price. I definitly gonna buy the whole collection from this Library edition. Go get it !

Library Editions of Hellboy

All 6 of the Library Editions of Hellboy arrived sealed and in pristine condition. I'm satisfied with all of them. The size of the pages, the print, the colouring, all blend together to make the best format to consume Mike Mignola's brilliant creation. If you are a fan of Mike Mignola, or the Hellboy films, or of distinct and dark comic art, this is a must own for your collection!
