I homeschool six children of friends, ages 7 to 14. The seven-year-old is brain damaged but very smart. He came to me last Thanksgiving at a kindergarten level, convinced he was stupid and having been teased badly in a classroom situation. I picked up this book because it says 'first grade' on it but it is really more like kindergarten. Still, he saw it as first grade and did great. I was so appreciative of something that went so slowly and he could excel at. Now he knows he is not stupid and we have moved up to normal first grade material, which he is happy to tackle. This is an excellent starting book for kindergarten or a youngster who has real trouble with sounds and reading.

Great book, my 1st grader loves it. It’s really helping out with his online school which he isn’t picking up on as well.

Easy to use, not too many directions, lots of reward stars I used both as intevention for non-reader 4th grader students and with my kindergarten nieces. Both felt successful. Carson Delossa continues to provide great affordable interventions for my class, along with interesting grade level activities.

This one seems to target skills he needs to practice more, like blends, digraphs, middle and ending sounds, word families and long and short vowels. The sticker chart at the end is very motivating for my child.

It is helping me find out exactly where my child is in things. I am working on catching them up to grade level and some things they are behind and others they are in point. This is helping to find out what is what without being overwhelming.

I'm loving this little book! It has a lot of material if your little one is new to beginning & ending letter sounds. My little one can figure out what's being asked w/ little instructions. This is the 2nd book I bought, but my little one prefers this book I will be purchasing more materials from this company again.

I love the bright colorful pictures. It is also helpful to have the letter to trace just before writing it for the answers. There are a few pictures that are difficult to connect to the beginning sound but that is common in most phonics books. Overall I am quite happy with it.

This is a great little practice book. I am a little worried it may be too easy for my 1st grade homeschooler, but practice is good even if its easy. We will use, but will probably get something a little more challenging too.

My daughter loves this book. She is zooming through it very quickly. She enjoys the pictures and it is teaching her a lot.

After dealing with a rather challenging kindergarten who really had no reading skills this book helped tremendously! It gives the student a fun way to get engaged and learn. Would recommend this to T-Kindergarten age group to get ahead.

We are utilizing these phonic books for homeschool this year. My Preschooler enjoys the way these books are colorful, easy to follow and not overly complex. The focus is on the letter sounds and use lots of repetition!

It gradually takes you into the detailed ways of learning. It starts off really simple.One of the best workbooks i've ever bought. Truly works! My child was struggling to read and he is getting better with this book.

I purchased this for my 6 yr old to do over the sumner. The work is easy for him. It will prepare him for something a bit more challenging in the next workbook. He enjoys the worksheets though!

My son turned 3 years old, couple of months ago and we have been using this book as an exercise for him. For kids who are familiar with their uppercase and lowercase letters, know phonics and able to sound out 3 and 4 letter words, this book is amazing to build confidence. Follow your kids skills rather than the marked grades on the book.

I am happy to buy this my 4 year old he enjoyed working in this one and that i am happy it has stars page on it that way it is more fun to him to get a good grades and its rewarding its fun and he loves this book. He always wanted to get a stars at each activity, it makes it more fun and never was boring working on this book... easy to understand and he loves it.

I'm working with an upcoming first grader who is having trouble recognizing letters. This brightly colored book provides a variety of practices for beginning readers. There are little stories; opportunities to color, draw, and write; and always cute graphics. I use this book in conjunction with flash cards, read along stories, and a much more complete, if not as cute, phonics book. My student loves this book so much, I have to ration the pages each session. BTW, she uses a clear overlay and wet erase markers for most of the pages. I copy the coloring pages for her so she can take them home. A color printer is a boon with this book, if you plan to use it for multiple students.

My girls are finding this book Easy to work through, a nice supplement book.

I bought this for my four year old, and it taught him to understand beginnings and endings of words. It does a pretty good job teaching kids the concepts of beginning and ending sounds, but when it comes to vowels my child had a real time grasping it, I had to teach it to him separately on a white board. This book will not teach your child how to read and neither is it guaranteed that your child will fully grasp how vowels work, but it's definitely a good starter book, and it helped my child grasp the building blocks and how letters are assembled to create words.

Excellent activity for home or a road trip

Excellent for reinforcing phonics. It is a very small book though and if our child is like mine, it won't last long. She is learning from it though and what more could I ask?

We ordered this for our 6 and 7 year olds to do packets for their homeschool lessons. I have enjoyed using this book.

My daughter is homeschooled, and I got this for her just as some extra practice. She loves it...usually she hates phonics, but she actually says this book is fun and will willingly work in it.

On the easy side for my 1st grader but definitely a lot of fun. I would suggest using this book for kindergartners at the end of the school year or over the summer as a preparation for 1st grade. Activities are fun, engaging and they get a gold star sticker for every completed page. Helps to reinforce phonics, understanding of combination sounds. Highly recommended for kids who need some help in school and are not very into it as this book will draw them into writing!

I like this book bc it has stickers for every page (if not more) after your child completes them which is fun! My first grader can do this book by herself without me having to sit with her... which is nice, but it is a little too simple. I still do really like it though and hope to get her the next level.

I got this for my daughter who will be finishing kindergarten to work on over the summer. It is good for review of kindergarten material, not so much first grade. The first 15 pages are about beginning sounds in words. A bit too easy for a first grade level book in my opinion.

Kid's love this book, maybe because of the stickers. It dwells for a long time on beginning sounds. A few steps seem to be skipped before moving on to digraphs and blends. I thought it should include ending sounds and vowel sounds before the blends.

Nice book, but I would not buy it if you are looking for a book that will last for a year or a few months.

This book is probably below grade level for most 1st graders. But it is excellent for kindergardeners or kids just starting 1st grade. I got it for my 1st grader to help him with his writing more than his reading. It did help.

This is super fun and easy to do compared to other phonics workbooks. It comes with star stickers for rewards. My 5yo can do 4 pages in 15mins with no supervision. I wish this can be a little more challenging.

If you laminated the pages, you're going to be more satisfied.

After purchasing the Carson-Dellosa Phonics for Kindergarten, which was just what I was looking for, I was excited to get my son into this First Grade version. However, it was something of a disappointment. Not nearly as visually appealing, and required reading that most First Graders starting out aren't able to do. It felt like they skipped around too much instead of solidly approaching word sounds and vowels in a logical way. Since I was homeschooling at the time, I ended up getting most of my son's phonics assignments from worksheets I found on the internet instead of using everything in the book. The book needs to be better thought out.

This was a fine book to get your child used to work sounds and pairs of words together, but there wasn't a huge variety in activities, so my son, who's a bit older, was bored.

Great phonics book for homeschooling

This is like for preschool. My 5 year daughter did whole book on one sitting.

My daughter likes this book. Its one of two other books i use to have study time with he or when she didn't have any homework. She will start 1st grade this fall. I would say it helped her somewhat with sounding out words better.

Good workbook with lots of recognition + writing practice. Good progression of skills. It seems level appropriate. I bought this for my kiddo who just finished kindergarten and she has been doing a few pages a day for the past month.

I wish the book was a bit larger for the price but it's been great for my son and he loves the gold stars that come with the book.

This is not a book geared towards a first grader. While the graphics are great, the book itself isn't helpful. Way too easy!
