Every actor's best friend
When I saw that David Dean Bottrell had written a book I immediately ordered it, delighted for the opportunity to hear the voice of my beloved acting coach ANYTIME I wish. In all my years of study and training, I'd never seen a more compassionate, NOT CYNICAL, never condescending, gifted coach anywhere. Sometimes I'd see a scene and think, "what is David going to say?" Even when an actor fell flat on their faces, David would find the beauty in their effort, and I would watch that actor transform, over the series of classes, and become AMAZING! His gift for teaching is pure magic. Even I was able to develop some real chops working in his classes. Though I'd acted in college, and my mother thought I had real talent, I've always been a musician and songwriter. I studied with David to develop my stage presence. Training with him I fell in love with acting all over again. This book is as easy to read as listening to David speak. It is an invaluable resource for actors of all stages in their careers, with funny and real insights on every aspect of show business life. This book will be your friend and companion, like the man himself. Don't leave Kansas without it!
Your want to act? Buy this book.
I am not an actor, but I have always been interested in the process. When David Dean Bottrell announced that he was writing a book, I was really enthused about it because he is truly one of those actors who stands out in every performance he does. How does one sustain such a long career as an actual "working" actor in Hollywood? We all know the stories. It's rare that someone becomes a superstar; the nuts-and-bolts actors are the ones who drive the industry, in my opinion. This book is something I would consider to be required reading for ANYONE interested in an acting career. It's a how-to and a cautionary tale all in one, written engaging and in a fantastic manner by a true artist in the field. Whether you're interested in stage, screen, or summer playhouses; if you're a teenager who's the high school superstar in every play your drama department puts on, and you've begun to consider that acting may just be for you: read this book. Not everyone can make acting their bread and butter, but DDB has, and he illustrates it well.
What Can I Say?????
What can I say that others who have critiqued this book haven't already said? It is definitely for actors at ALL levels. It's not only chock-full of valuable information and guidance, but the memoir aspect of it is inspirational. David's honesty in how challenging it can be to become a working actor is spot on. There are no easy shortcuts. There is hard work and a commitment to never give up! I know David personally because, like others have mentioned, he was my former acting coach. I had studied in New York City in the late 90's with some very significant teachers, but it wasn't until I was under David's wing that my work progressed to the next level. He truly is one of the kindest people you will ever meet in Hollywood, and he truly cares about his students as well as other actors. His comedic wit both onscreen and off make him a joy to be around and no matter how much he accomplishes, he always remains humble. I enjoyed every single chapter of this book and soaked up its contents like a sponge. I also purchased 2 additional copies and gave them to two of my other acting friends who could benefit from its content. Who better to learn from than someone who has not only been a working actors for years, but is STILL a working actor and then some??? If you want to learn from the best of the best, pick up a copy or two or three today!!!
Should be REQUIRED READING in every college acting program, especially MFA programs
David Dean Bottrell takes the gleam off the acting profession, and replaces it with a unforgiving mirror image of yourself. You'll have to take a cold, hard look at yourself and decide if you have what it takes. Or, a better question, if you even want to have what it takes, to be a professional actor. Sure you have talent, but talented people don't always get the gigs. Sure you have ambition, and that might keep you in the game longer than you should stay. Just read the Chapter "Death by Resume: Jealousy and Competitiveness" to have a taste. Bottrell is smart, funny, honest, insightful, kind, and did I say funny? -- because I meant to. This book will go on Theater Departments' reading lists for a long time. You can dream about being a movie star, but Hollywood ain't what you see on the Oscars (Harvey Weinstein? Kevin Spacey? Bryan Singer? And and and?) and the more you know, the more prepared you can be. Aspiring Actors: READ. THIS. BOOK. (If Bottrell himself reads it for Audible, then listen to that, as well. I'd honestly pay cover to hear that.) ps. He doesn't kill your dreams. He tells you what happens when they come true.
Inspiring, Insightful and a Pleasure to Read!
Working Actor is a very helpful and enjoyable book for people pursuing or considering a career in the "business of show." Written by veteran TV & theater "character actor" David Dean Bottrell, the book benefits from Bottrell's unique and diverse talents not only as an actor, but as a writer and teacher/instructor as well. Clear, concise, and easy to read, the book walks you through many key stages of life as a working actor, including preparing your resume and headshots, finding an agent, landing auditions and roles, joining a union, connecting with producers and directors, and navigating and surviving a highly risky and competitive business with zero job stability and security. Funny, honest, and filled with juicy anecdotes, this book was a true pleasure to read. Highly recommended!
A fabulous read for all ages!
I sat down to read this book in a quiet moment and found myself putting it down somewhere between midnight and sunrise. Not that it took me all those hours to read, but because I had gone back to read dog eared pages that resonated with me.I so enjoyed the twists and turns, ups and downs shared with humor and a touch of tears. This is not only a book about acting and breaking into the business. It is a fabulously written outline for those of us who are lucky enough to sit on the sidelines and be entertained by those who fight the fine fight and who endure the hardships they face to share themselves so openly in their craft. This is a book about life lessons applicable to all. It gave me a sneak peak behind the curtain and left me in awe of a world I have thought little of. Certainly not past my television screen or a crowded theater. This book is so much more then learning how to break in to New York theater or Hollywood, it is a journey of learning about oneself. Accepting ones truth regarding their strengths and their flaws, and knowing that both are beautiful. They make us innately who we are, and that everyone we meet along the way in our journey of life, leaves a mark, whether they or we know it at that moment Success is not measured by awards, whether you be an actor or a plumber. Our interpretation of success is measured in the ability to find a way to do what we love and pay the bills. Life is about getting past ourselves and out of our heads. Learning that other peoples opinions do not change who we are or what we are unless we allow it to. Life for any of us doesn't just happen, it is created. My experience in life is what I are willing to do to create my own journey. This book will stay on my shelf unlike others who live on on the dusty shelves of my local goodwill. Thank you Mr Bottrell for years of incredible entertainment as well as your candid insights in this book
Perfect contemporary tome for actors and folks who want the behind the scenes!
Oh my gosh is this a breath of fresh air! We need a new book on the ins and outs of the acting profession as it currently stands. And from both coasts! DDB has been a working, successful actor and teacher in Los Angeles and New York City, in film TV and the stage, as well as traveled to other locals to work in the entertainment business. I applaud his honestly, his insights and his humor! You'll love this book, whether you want to be an actor or not! However if you want to be in that world, or ARE an actor, this is a MUST READ! It's organized in such a way it's a perfect textbook for getting started, staying vital, and pursuing a profession as an actor. Along the way you'll laugh along with Botrell though his personal experiences and cringe worthy stories. My friend is enjoying Working Actor as a voyeur into the world of TV and film. I am so happy this book is out there and I will send it to all my friends who ask about this business. Well DONE!
For every college friend who asks you to introduce their child to someone in Hollywood.
I'm not an actor and I'm not in the Industry, but I live in Hollywood which apparently to the unfamiliar, qualifies as a talent agent or casting director. The next time this happens, I will go directly to Amazon and send them this book. "Working Actor" is fabulous. It's a textbook for the do's and don'ts; highs and lows; and ins and outs on the quest for stardom. I purchased this book because I know David. He goes to my church and his scripture readings are as engaging and compelling as the characters he plays on television. His writing is equally impressive. What I wasn't expecting was how relatable his advice is to those of us with "regular" careers. When writing about the importance of a network, David writes, "So I decided that instead of trying to be a networker, I'd become a supporter. And if I was going to approach somebody, I wasn't going to ask; I was going to offer." Working Actor is a great read. It provides insight to what goes on behind the scenes both from David and from actors, agents, directors, producers and showrunners that contributed to this book. I give it five shining stars!
Valuable reading from a pros pro.
I have been a fan of DDB since his Lincoln Meyer days on Boston Legal. I could have used this book when I made the decision at 47 to come to Hollywood and give it my best shot. David offers so many valuable lessons that can help from day one to series regular and beyond. A must read for new comers and seasoned vets who will nod their heads in agreement as David recalls important moments and lessons he has learned along the way. This is a smart purchase and a fun read.
Lots of Insight
I'm not an actor. I have no intention of being one. Why did I read this book? Because my nephew wants to become an actor and make a living at it. I know it's a one in a million shot for the kid, but after reading this book and then giving it to him, I know he has a better shot. The information is concise, funny and insightful. Plus, as a full-time author myself (crime thrillers, horror) I found quite a few interesting things I can use for my career as well!

Oddball insights from a wonderful actor and teacher's life
DDB is a unique talent, and this book is rich in wisdom, guidance, and assurance for the establishing actor. David tells his story with incisive eccentric humor, and leaves his reader with wisdom and hope for the rapturous journeys they will face. The book is a nice reflection of the author, a thrilling and precise actor and wildly popular conservatory teacher, a fun and helpful read!
You don’t have to be an actor to enjoy this book
Disclaimer - I’ve seen David Dean Bottrell in a few things, and always enjoyed his performances. I really liked this book. Although I’m not, never have been, and won’t ever be “in the business” as an actor or otherwise, there was a lot for me to relate to: — The author’s journey in pursuit of his dream/career is interesting to follow, with lessons for anyone trying to live their best life — The behind the scenes views of the show business industry are revealing — Lots of humor — Well-written. I can’t stand bad grammar or awkward work choices in a book. The writing here is top notch all the way through. Highly recommended.
Fantastic insight into what an actor's life is really like
This book is a must-read for anyone considering pursuing a career in acting. It is certainly not one for the faint of heart, so arming yourself with as much knowledge about the industry is imperative. David Dean Bottrell is an accomplished actor, screenwriter, and acting teacher. He details exactly what life is like as a working actor, and he peppers his book with tips, tricks, and insights for aspiring actors. He explains why newcomers should never enter the industry chasing fame. But he also explains that aspiring actors who take their careers seriously and train and continue to improve their craft can, in fact, have a wonderful career in show business--even if that career is not what you might have pictured at the outset. I'm an actor myself and coach a lot of child actors, and I will be recommending this book to all of them (and their parents)!
Great Touchstone for the Veteran or Newbie Actor
I've had the good fortune to take class with David, and this book distills the best of his knowledge into an entertaining, accessible touchstone for the veteran actor and newbie alike. I find myself coming back to this book time and time again to remind myself of best business practices, to ground me before an audition, and to inspire. This should be part of your core collection of books on acting. To get any traction in the world of acting you need a fusion of craft and business knowledge. David gives you both here, delivered with humor, compassion and camaraderie.
Terrific and personal advice to both aspiring and working actors!!
This is a frank exploration of what it means to pursue an acting career today. Though chock full of practical advice, it is also an amusing and forthright memoir. David has clearly been there and experienced the highs and lows of this rewarding and frustrating life in the entertainment business. He imparts his knowledge and experience with a refreshing candor that is both illuminating and fun to read.
A must read!
I have read many acting books throughout the years and this one is my favourite by far. Like a lit of them it is sincere and doesn't shy away from telling you it is going to be a challenge. But David Dean Bottrell managed to capture a sincerity and a kindness in this book that is really refreshing and more importantly encouraging. Few books about the world of show business talked to me like an equal and made me feel motivated to live that life by the end. This one does. You really feel like he has your best interest in mind and truly loves his work and where his life took him. He is so willing to be vulnerable that you cannot help but be sucked in and eat up every word of this book. I read it in two days it was so good and will probably re-read it many times again.
A must read for anyone in a creative field.
David Dean Bottrell has written an extraordinary book about making it as a working actor. Writers and any creative person will find much that rings true in his account of working for 35 years as an actor/writer/director/producer both in the theater and on camera. He had me rolling on floor with the parrot story and pondering our unrecognized interconnectedness in his story from the grocery aisle. Not since William Goldman has an author taken us behind the scenes of what life is really like in Hollywood and New York. I give his book five stars!
Part Guide, Part Memoir
I had the privilege of being one of David Dean Bottrell's acting students at UCLA. He always had insightful critiques of our scenes. It was an absolute pleasure to pick up his book which acts not only as a guide offering advice and helpful tips on how to be a working actor, but also as a memoir giving us a glimpse on how it was for him and his own personal experience, as everyone's journey will be different. After reading his book I'm ready to start tackling my goals, so I can eventually quit that safety job and work as an actor, writer, and director, doing what I love. An absolute must read for those in the business struggling but willing to work hard and take some risks.
BOUGH IT, READ IT IN TWO DAYS, LOVED IT.
I am usually quite skeptical of these books and even when I buy them I stop reading halfway through because I find them repetitive and boring. David Dean Bottrell is an amazing writer that hooks you into his funny and truth-telling book about acting. You will not find a "way to succeed", but you will find truth and lots of helpful hints that will help you on your day to day life of auditions and rejections. It is definitely worth it.
Great Advice for ANYONE in "The Business"
I'm not an actor. I'm not a producer. I'm not technically "in" the business. I'm a rep with a personal appearance booking agency. I bought the book because DDB is a Twitter buddy. I love the book because he's got some really amazing advice. I knew I could be doing my job MUCH better, I just didn't know what exactly was missing. Now I do and "Working Actor" helped show me that. Whatever part of the business you're in... really WHATEVER business you're in... take notes and apply the knowledge. This is good stuff. I wish someone had told me even half of what is in here 20 years ago. I probably wouldn't have given on my own acting career.
A satisfying memoir, too
I have no desire to be an actor, but I do love a good memoir. So when I enjoyed Bottrell's thoughtful posts on social media (via a mutual friend) I wanted to get to know him better. This book was a fun read because the writing is solid and the tone is honest. The author just seems like a decent guy, and it's kind of a pleasure to spend time with him, learning about him and his illusary craft. Sure, I would have loved more dishing about his famous co-stars, but good for him being a class act. This is a worthwhile memoir as well as practical guide to show business.
ATTENTION ACTORS: BE INSPIRED & BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Every actor should read this wonderful, helpful and entertaining book. David writes about his own personal journey into the acting world but the tips he provides will help ALL actors for theater, film/tv. David genuinely cares about actors, well-humans really, and I'm so grateful he took the time to write this amazing book. I definitely see him writing more books. In particular, I would love to know his exact preparation process for what he does as soon as he gets a script. If you watch his reel (Google it) he creates interesting, diverse, 100% believable characters who you love to watch. Thank you David Dean Bottrell for keeping the dreams of many actors ALIVE and PRESENT!
Have a Conversation With David
If you know David, you can see his grinning, swinging gestures popping off the page as if he were sitting across from you at bar after rehearsal, sipping his Pinot. And if you don’t know David, you will after reading this book. His joyous, conversational tone helps take the edge off the intimidating nature and brutalities of this business, without ever compromising the gamble and sheer dumb-luck that can happen to the best of us. He makes it at once seem inviting, without ever claiming it to be easy. And at the end of the day, he knows this is one actors story, albeit an extraordinary and well-rounded one. And one anyone from seasoned pro to fresh-faced newbie should find a reason to listen. What a ride! - Andrew Block, Director
Entertaining and touching, and not just for “industry” folk
Okay, so I’m not an actor. Or an actor wannabe. Or even in the entertainment industry. But I live in Los Angeles and, it’s true, you can’t swing a cat without hitting an actor (or “writer/producer/show runner/script supervisor). I admire creative people, but wondered what made them tick. Then I read this book. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It’s funny, witty, and touching. David Dean Bottrell hit his mark.
Acting Advice with a Soul
David's book goes much deeper than other acting-career books. He shares his philosophy and mindset on the business, backed up by experience. It was inspiring to hear about his setbacks and how he overcame them. His approach is no-nonsense but also filled with hope and enthusiasm. David is also a great writer, and he packs a lot of insight into fairly short, 15-minute chapters. For NY actors it's a perfect read on the subway or in the waiting room.
Truthful, helpful, and FUNNY!
I am, PROUDLY, one of David Dean Bottrell's students from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I jumped at the opportunity to read Working Actor! I was already in love with the way David thinks, speaks, and teaches. Hearing the encouragement, his WILD, TRUE life stories, his heart, and the reinforcement of lessons about acting that I'd already heard from studying with him was such a precious gift, and I will definitely read it all over again! Thank you, David!
Informative and Entertaining
Author David Dean Bottrell does a terrific job of putting together a book that can help anyone interested in the "Industry" have a realistic view of what to expect and how to navigate much of what may be encountered. With over 30 year's experience he knows what he is talking about. Mr. Bottrell has also put together a book that is very readable and entertaining. If you have any interest in the entertainment industry, do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book!

Not just for those in the business.
I love this book. As a viewer not an actor it was interesting to see how the process works. Getting to know David on twitter and also on screen as Lincoln on Boston Legal has been so much fun.. he is adorable. Hope to meet in person some day. This book is great for those whose talents are in other areas but enjoy T.V and theater. Thank you David for sharing so much.
A must read book for every actor!
This book is one of the best, if not THE best book on the life of a working actor and the entertainment business. The chapters are short and easily digestible, and SUPER entertaining. David will make you laugh so hard. But, he also made me cry happy tears in the end. Youl’ll have to read it to know why! ;) This book is a must in every actor’s library, no matter what stage of the business they are in. 5+ stars!!!
Useful for actors getting started
Bottrell writes well and has a lot of useful advice. Mostly a how-to, a little bit memoir (which is fun). Easy to read, I enjoyed it.
Required reading for all acting students whether in a class in Tulsa or at Juilliard.
David's humor and years of experience are the real deal. I think it should be required reading for all acting programs. Working Actor is just that -a book by a working actor. 98% of the actors out there are not stars. They act because they can't see living without it. Yes this book is about how to work as an actor but even more it reminds actors to be good people, to do for others and make a life!
Hilarious, genuine, And a unique view
Amazing book! As a struggling actor, I found the comparisons to be reassuring to my current situation, as well as the uniqueness to be endearing and really brought me a new way to look at the pursuit of this profession. Really love all of David’s work, his word usage and just plain candidness was really charming. Highly recommend, filled with so many tips for anyone living in one of the thriving acting hubs, NYC and L.A.
Do you really want to be an actor..? Read this first.
As an acting coach, David will push you no matter how talented you are. That is why I happily paid him monthly for just under a decade(He moved back to New York from L.A. or it would have been longer). When I have an audition, I will close my eyes and ask myself, what would DDB say...? His words come from experience. I found him because of a casting who compared me to him. I looked him up, called him and never looked back.
Priceless advice and info
Great mix of humor and insight for actors looking to succeed in a very competitive business. Advice from a successful working actor. Also includes great quotes from industry people about their own experiences.
Not just for actors
Anyone who's in the business, wants to be in the business, or just wants to succeed in life, should READ THIS BOOK. Really - earning a living as an actor is one of the toughest life journeys one can embark on. Bottrell has figured it out, succeeded at it, and now he has shared it with the rest of us.
A Must Read
Reading this book will give you an edge over another actor, you will be privy to industry secrets & how to's & not to's! a companion to have in your car when you're coming home from an audition & wonder to yourself 'why am i doing this?' David Dean Bottrell reminds you why & everything is good again.
Inspiring, Funny, Insightful Book
A great book for all actors to read at every level. Smart, funny and very inspiring. A compelling page-turner that I found extremely helpful. David writes with an honesty, charm, humor and soulfulness. Highly recommend this book to actors and non-actors who want to understand a little better about what an actor's life is all about.
Master class in Acting.
David’s book is a wonderful tool for all aspiring and working actors. David portrayed Lincoln Meyer in a number of episodes of “Boston Legal”. A master class in acting. But Lincoln is only one layer to David’s abilities and he gives it all here in these pages. David played Lincoln, but his book is a Ferrari.
Great Read
David Dean Bottrell has written a fantastic book that explains all the inner workings & struggle of becoming an actor. There is a lot of humor. If I was going to go into show business, THIS would be my guide book. I am thoroughly enjoying reading it. Thank you.
Honestly informative, using his own experiences in show business.
Wonderfully informative book about the slippery business of professional acting! David Dean Bottrell honestly and sometimes humorously weaves in his own personal experiences of how he's made it in professional theater and film acting. The book is fun, not stodgy; informative, not condescending! Would recommend to anybody wanting to dive into show business!
David Dean Bottrell's humor and knowledge = a Winner!
Mr. Bottrell's book was recommended to me by a relative and I was more than entertained each time I turned the page. I feel like every person even thinking about becoming an actor should read this book...through thick and thin, ups and downs. I've even purchased another book to give to a friend's son to help jump start his career!.
So much goodness in a book, you’d think it’s Cake!
So much goodness in a book, you’d think it’s cake! David Dean Bottrell gives a lot of confidence back to the actor. Whether you are going through some bumps in the road, or looking to take on the next steps in fulfillment in your career. You’ll find a home in this book. Rich in humor, you will find yourself glued!
Definitely worth it!
This book is a necessity for anyone feeling scared and unsure about the future of their career. David Dean Bottrell provides wonderful guidance and support!
Great graduation gift!
It was a fun read. Perfect for anyone starting out in the world without a clear path. Even though it is stated for actors, it's a good read for anyone. Like Kitchen Confidential is written for chefs but is well loved by everyone. I wish I read it when I graduated. But I am glad I read it now.
👍👍👍
Very Helpful and Informative.
Definitely worth the read!
I’m not an aspiring actor but David’s book was very enjoyable! Not only do I believe that the book lays out a path towards a career in acting but it’s also an inspirational outline of how to succeed in any career or objective.
Great book, by a working actor!
I was fortunate to hear the author at a speak engagement & couldn't wait to buy their book, I'm glad that I did. They have good, practical advice about the business, with a lovely sense of humor as well. A+
fun, funny, and factual
the subtitle for this book is spot-on: "breaking in, making a living, and making a life in the fabulous trenches of show business". full of fun stories and really practical info! you really feel the author's love for the business, even as he recounts the ups and downs and ups agains and downs agains that make up an actor's long journey and appreciation for the crazy business of it all.
A MUST READ!
This book is the most honest and truthful guide about the “Business” I have ever read. It’s not just a survival guide for your physical being but your mental status as well. The author shares his experiences in a way I can understand and learn from.
Helpful and Entertaining
This book is terrific! It’s the perfect mix of a how-to and an auto-biography with helpful anecdotes guiding each subject. The author, David Dean Bottrell, is a great teacher and this book should be part of every actor’s toolbox.
Enjoyable read ...
An enjoyable read that is equal parts inspiration, stories from the trenches and practical advice to help navigate the straits of your own show business journey.
Uplifting

Should be the FIRST THING YOU READ if you're contemplating a career in acting!!
Full disclosure, I'm acquainted with the author having seen his one-man-show and being particularly good friends with one of his long-time clients. I watched from my perch on Facebook as David assembled the parts for the book and teased it's arrival. I knew him as very much a quality actor and as my good friend Phil would say, a truly magnificent teacher. But, ultimately the proof is in the reading. Before I moved to LA to embark on an acting career (a late life move for me) I read several books which helped prepare me to make the adjustment. I only wish that David had written it back then. As I read it - through the lens of someone just starting out- I was able to track it with my own experience and see what common pitfalls I've had along the way, which one's I've managed to avoid and which may yet lay ahead. Beyond just the baked-in practicality, David has managed to hold a mirror up to me, now 12 years in, and remind me of exactly why I'm here. My mission is to merge that epoxy of "natural talent" with the sublime nature of collaborative art, creating a bond with something that is much bigger than myself. There's a humility (and a humanity) to it all that this books captures on so many levels beyond simply the practical. Finally, the humor. David is, at his core, a storyteller. And without his gifted sense of humor there would be lost a critical element which elevates the reality of accepting tremendous daily uncertainty almost to a level where it becomes a desirable, even freeing way of life. The fact is, if you're reading this review, you probably already know the truth about your own desire. Buy it. Read it. If you still feel the way you do now about the prospect of acting. Pick a place to move to. And break a leg!
Working Actor works on all fronts!
Get it! Working Actor is a fantastic, fresh, funny account that is both expert and personable of, not only what it takes to be a working actor, but also where it can take you — and how you can make the most of the unpredictable journey. As an actress and recent transplant to New York, where I’ve entered the East Coast market rather later in my career, I found myself nodding, smiling, ah-hah-ing throughout this book — buoyed by his advice, great attitude, business sense and professional point of view. And the stories! David’s writing is smart, amusing, poignant, clever, bold, honest and inspiring as he shares stories from his life in the trenches. He’s such a wise and entertaining storyteller, I felt as if he were sitting right next to me telling me — blow by blow — about each step of his fabulous journey … so far. Throughout the book, David weaves a thread of gratitude for getting to work consistently an actor, mixing it and mingling it with tales of the ups and downs, surprises and adventures of his career, plus loads of practical, on-point advice for actors at any stage of the game. He knows what he’s talking about and is both encouraging and realistic about the life skills that will help you thrive as a professional actor. My favorite part of the book was a moment that brought tears to my eyes. Tears of recognition and resonance from a simple story about the deep, lifelong, helpful, humorous, cautionary, uplifting connections we make as artists. It’s good to be reminded of the power we have to connect and make a difference with our unique gifts — something that David Dean Bottrell does with mastery. I’m grateful for this book and how it made me think and feel.
Such A Good Book and Such An Easy Listen
At first I thought "good book for beginners but not sure how much I, a 'seasoned' actor will take away." I'm so glad I kept listening. You can tell Bottrell is a good actor by the way he narrates in such a natural fashion. His reading style is perfect for the story which follows his path from the beginning of his career to the present time. There's LOTS of value for actors of every level no matter where you are on the journey. At times I felt like he was telling MY story - except he has better credits. :) It's a fine book. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and this one is such a keeper that I'm going to do something I rarely do - I've ordered the hard copy version so I can underline it, dog ear it and generally treat the text in a way I was taught was 'disrespectful' to a book. Not since actor Rick Lenz' memoir North of Hollywood have I read or listened to a book by an actor who was willing to be so forthcoming about his failures - even in the audition room. Can't recommend this book highly enough. Hope you get as much out of it as I am.
Quirky as a yoga ball, real as a boulder, and sharp as a sushi grade fillet knife
At the beginning of this book, Mr. Bottrell declares himself to be a veteran in the show business industry, and remarks that as most veterans, he has some war scars to show for it. And boy, he is not kidding. Throughout the next 232 pages, which go by unbelievably fast by the way due to his incredible storytelling skills, Mr. Bottrell weaves together remarkable funny stories about one of the craziest industries in the world, some seriously real advice for any young or aspiring professional dreaming to make a life from his or her art, straightforward and easy to understand information about things which some would consider a mysterious or elusive, and very deep philosophical (though very practical at the same time) ideas about the art of acting. As if this is not enough, he throws in every once in a while citations from some of his friends throughout the years, some of them already well established and well known, some of them just on the first step of the yellow brick road (or the rabbit hole) - some of them agree with what he says, some of them don't, but they all give context to this rocky path into show business, which is indeed a unique journey that everyone experiences for themselves in their own way. The book is neatly separated into parts and many chapters, which are all very readable and to-the-point. The first part of the book deals with how an aspiring amateur can find a door into the show business world. The second part deals with how that aspiring amateur, now that he/she have found the door, opens it slowly as they get accepted into the "pro" world. The third part deals with how an already established professional can keep the door open, and live inside the industry for many successful years without going insane. This is why this book really has something for everyone. I feel like I am personally somewhere on the edge of that door, having already opened it and entered somewhat, but still standing close to it, with a beer in my hand, smiling sheepishly and hoping someone will make a passing remark to me that I can use as an excuse to start a conversation. That's why the first part of the book made me chuckle wholeheartedly as I remembered my past self running into the same obstacles at the beginning of my journey, the second part made me nod again and again as I felt the words touch the present state of my soul, and the third part made me smile in awe of all the great stories I hope I get to tell when I too become a veteran like Mr. Bottrell. To cut to the chase, Mr. Bottrell's book "Working Actor" is a wonderful, no-bullshit, delightfully thorough and practical guide combined with unique and very revealing stories about the industry that would make even a sober cynic raise an eyebrow. It's delicious and delovely and it goes by so fast, and you can find golden nuggets of very helpful advice on every page. It's simply a must-read for anyone considering a life in show business, for anyone already in show business and wondering if they've made the right decision, and for anyone who already spent their entire lives in show business and needs a reminder as to why they ever thought going into it would be even remotely a good idea. In between all of these you can find something which is rare for anyone who has been for so long a part of an industry that can chew you up and spit you out, and that thing is love. In his closing remarks (spoiler alert!) Mr. Bottrell says that he is and will always be grateful for that life that chose him and put him on a bus to New York as a young man pursuing a dream. I am grateful for that too, because otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the chance to read this book. Thank you.
Must Read for Beginning Actors
I'm so mad at David Dean Bottrell... for not writing this book when I was starting out as an actor. I've been a fan of his for a while, so I read the book even though I've been a professional actor for a couple of decades. I was surprised at how much I liked it. It's written well, so it's a page turner, and it's full of really useful information for actors who still have questions about how the business works. It's also full of great thoughts for those of us who have been at it for a while. As actors, one of our jobs is to always keep ourselves excited about our craft, and this book did that for me. Great read! I'll be recommending it to kids just starting out without hesitation.
Invaluable and Entertaining
Loved, loved, loved this audiobook! David wastes no time in getting right to the good stuff - tips, tricks, lessons learned on how to be successful as an actor. The stories he tells are practical, relatable, fun and interesting. The structure of this book really should be the standard for all other how-to books, in just about any profession. I liked that David doesn't bother sugar-coating things. There are some hard truths about working in the entertainment industry, and he doesn't shy away from sharing the lessons he's learned - all of which he is grateful for. Though, I'm sure he wishes he had this book when he started out. The fact that David took the time to create this book speaks to his generosity and graciousness as an artist - and you can hear that in his voice. He is both honest and caring, and truly wants only the best for others making their way into and through the whirlwind and pitfall-laden world that is professional acting. Recommended for: Anyone that wants to be an actor Anyone who enjoys some inside scoops from the entertainment industry, and enjoys a few fundamental life lessons along the way. READ/LISTEN TO THIS BOOK!
A MUST-READ FOR ALL ASPIRING ACTORS & DDB FANS !!!
Wonderful, inspiring book! David Dean Bottrell’s “Working Actor” is an essential read for any individual considering the pursuit of being an actor professionally (on camera or onstage), as well as, for those who continue to flourish in their artistic careers of any kind. Not only does he supply plenty of useful advice to novice performers and enough resources to help get started, he also shares the spotlight with his some of his friends (actors, writers, producers, etc) who discuss their own experiences and thoughts about being a part of Show Biz. By offering up these extra responses on the various topics Bottrell covers himself, it makes the book feel more like a collaborative team effort where several voices are heard and represented from the entertainment community. Before reading it, I already had immense respect for DDB as an actor/writer/director. His talent has shined on my screen countless times. But getting to learn more about his life, his utmost passion for acting, & his journey every step of the way only makes me admire him even more. I loved reading about his own first-hand experiences and seeing more of the man behind such memorable characters. And I know others will, too. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying a copy of “Working Actor” for yourself &/or anyone else you know who wants stop being just a dreamer and finally start living the dream.
An entertaining and informative read
I highly recommend David’s book to actors and writers in any stage of their careers as well as their family members so they can empathize or anyone who is interested in the entertainment field. He has a lot of good advice, but it’s also filled with very interesting and amusing anecdotes. I’ve been pursuing acting for a long time. One of the shows that I watched and would have loved to audition for was “Boston Legal.” I still remember when David first appeared on the screen. I was mesmerized by David’s unique performance and delighted in his every episode. In his book, he says that he hadn’t acted for seven years when he got that audition!! You never know when things will turn around for you in this business. This book is practical and inspiring and not everyone can be a working actor. But if you follow David’s advice and don’t give up, you just might. Otherwise there’s always community theater, which is also a lot of fun. Thanks David.
Ever actor should own a copy of this book
This book is hands down the perfect guide to becoming a working actor in Hollywood. I've read a handful of biographies on famous actors and how they got their start, and books about acting techniques, but nothing comes close to the truth and honesty of Working Actor. David details every step of the process in which he took in order to become the fantastic actor (and writer and teacher and friend and everything) that he is. Other books by working actors always seem to skip the most vital parts of their journies: "I moved to Hollywood, got a job in a factory and then fast forward to me on TV and now writing a book about my famous life!" David doesn't do leave any stoned unturned. Having worked with David I can attest that he truly knows the ins and outs of the business as well as the fundamentals on how to become a great, working actor. David Dean Bottrell is truly the best!
Not Just For Actors
I am not an actor, nor do I aspire to be one. I simply purchased the book in support of David Dean Bottrell after seeing him in a few riveting scenes in my all time favorite TV series Rectify. Wow! This is a most terrific book! Very thoughtfully written. David is very engaging, funny, straightforward, and honest. The stories are as enjoyable to read as any you'll pick up this year. And the stories are plentiful. You'll read about cities, and theaters, and instructors, the industry and breaking in to it. All told in a very interesting, engaging, honest way. There's a lot to enjoy, and a lot to learn here. Treat yourself to this book. And every time you are watching a movie or TV show, I promise you will have a greater appreciation for those who are bringing it to you. Thank you, David Dean Bottrell, for an excellent book! Keep writing!
A fun, breezy read
Part how-to and part autobiography, "Working Actor" is a one-man cheering section for anyone at any stage of their creative endeavor. David Dean Bottrell ("Boston Legal") shares his advice how to stay positive, how to weather setbacks, the importance of networking (and how to do it without getting on people's nerves!). He's living proof how you never know where that next big break is going to come from, so go for it! New York vs. L.A., writing vs. acting, stage vs. screen, it's all in here, along with advice from insiders throughout the industry. Throughout, "Working Actor" is a fun, breezy read, and a highly relatable book full of advice to keep creating, stay positive and above all, bring your whole truth to every project. Well done!
A quick read full of insight, humor, and inspiration!!
WORKING ACTOR is a must read for All actors in pursuit of building a career. Whether you are just beginning, or have been a working actor for many years there is wisdom for you on this book. When my business partner showed me David Dean Bottrell had written a new book, I ordered it immediately. David tells the bare bones truth about his career in this industry holding back no details. Having finished reading it I walked away with a sense I am exactly where I am meant to be in this juggernaut of a career. Most importantly I am not alone. This career takes passion, tenacity, and constant refocus to take the next step forward. My favorite part of the book was when David talked about realizing he had accomplished his dream of being a WORKING ACTOR without even knowing it. It had showed up and manifested somehow. That’s when I knew I had bought in to his story. And what a great story it is!
I’m so glad I read it!
A very helpful and encouraging read! This book offers insight into creating a meaningful life in the arts and beyond. As someone who dreamed of living in New York and never imagined switching to the West coast, I found Bottrell’s account of making the move to be highly valuable as I prepare to go to LA myself. His experience in the industry would be a great aid to anyone involved in the entertainment industry, from those new to the scene or even seasoned professionals. It’s truly refreshing to hear such a humble and experienced voice, reminding you that your time is of immense value, but it’s also incredibly important not to waste it being ungrateful or cheating yourself out of joy as you pursue dreams. I’ve already passed this book along to a loved one, and I hope they find it to be as inspirational as I did.
The ultimate actor's handbook!
David Dean Bottrell gives an insider's look at the real deal with being a working actor. Every aspiring, mid-career, and journeyman actor should give this book a read. In the artist's world of feast and famine, Bottrell reveals his personal experiences of pressing his nose against the bakery window and being invited to dine. It's a court-side seat in the game of pursuing a career in show biz. A must-read page turner that's hard to put down.
An absolute "must read" for a beginning actor!
A wonderful, supportive read for anyone taking on the daunting challenge of being a professional actor. The book is filled with wit, humor, empathy and demure bits of gossip. Mr. Bottrell does not sugar coat the difficulties of the profession, but he offers wise advise, encouragement and celebrates the joys of being an actor. WORKING ACTOR provides a manual on how to get there, how to sustain yourself once you are there and graceful exit strategies to anyone who has tired of the pursuit. A delightful, helpful read for the newcomer and an amusing trip down memory lane for anyone who has been there, done that!
Great book also for NON-ACTORS
I am not an actor. I am not in the entertainment industry, neither do I intend to be in that industry. But I read this book, because I get interviewed for jobs and I want to get different perspectives on how one approaches his/her craft, and there is no place better to look at than acting business, where rejection rates are unimaginable. From "Stop looking. Start finding" to how to approach an audition (interviews for non-actors), I took a lot of notes and I intend to keep them for future reference. This book is a great source for ANYONE that gets interviewed for any sort of job -- yes, even white-collar corporate jobs.
The Real Deal... Inspirational and grounded
This is a book written from generosity and heart. David is a gift as he shares things that you can only get from a person who's been in the trenches and experienced the highs and the lows of this business. It has a wisdom about it and a compassion without being airy-fairy. It's quite nuts and bolts and you will know more about how to audition and manage your career after reading it. It is also very entertaining, funny and a page turner. It goes deep without getting off track as he really keeps the focus on 'Breaking in, Making a living, and Making a Life in the fabulous Trenches of Show Business' as stated on the cover. (oops below the photo I took). This isn't just a teacher who sits in his throne and 'was' an actor. David is a working actor, writer and teacher. He's also someone who has a achieved a level of success and has worked with the best of them. I must take his class after this. I believe in the years to come this book will be a bible and as one person said, 'A breath of fresh air'. It will change your career and maybe also your life. Thank you David Dean Bottrell!
This book is a roadmap to success!!
This book is has everything Actors should know but are often times not told about the business. It gives amazing insight on how to balance the pursuit of an Acting career while trying to keep bills payed. It helps the actor navigate the often confusing waters of the acting world, and what priorities one should have. What it has taught me about mostly is how to make calculated, precise, planned attacks in creating a career. I feel like I have more of a roadmap of where I’m going, and my efforts don’t sometimes feel futile. On top of all the important information it’s giving you, it’s extremely entertaining and a very fun read. Every time I put it down I get excited and feel inspired.
Definitely recommend to any youngun starting out their acting life
Such a no-nonsense yet entertaining book with actionable advice for the young - or old - artist. David Dean Botrell makes it clear that careers are rarely accidental but rather the result of focused intention and persistence. Filled with good reminders for those of us who've been around awhile, too.
“Working Actor” working for this working actor! :)
I just picked up and started this book, already enjoying it very much! I feel as if I am getting to take a masterclass with the writer, an established artist with valuable life experience and insight to share. Can’t wait to continue reading! Going to accompany me on planes and beaches this summer no doubt! Having performed in one of David Dean Brottell’s previously written shows, “Dearly Departed” I can confidently say I have an added favorite author, playwright, artist, etc. added to the list! 🎭🎶🎬🌟
Real insight on how to book real jobs!
The thing that makes David’s book stand out from the rest is that he is actually a working actor! Beyond his brilliant approach to the actual craft David gives you the insights you need to take your talent out into the world and book actual paying jobs! He’s kind, compassionate and funny. Having this book makes you feel like you have your own personal coach with you every step of the way.
Not just for Actors!
Part DIY for anyone considering trying to “make it” as an actor, part laugh out loud memoir of life in a very difficult business. I think anyone who wants to know how the world of TV and film works would enjoy this book. And I think the story of the parrot translates to ANY line of work.
Profound and profoundly hilarious!
This wonderful book by my lovely, witty, smart, charming friend, David Dean Bottrell, is about the labor of love that is acting. The book is as lovely, witty, smart and charming as he is. It is by turns profound and profoundly hilarious. And very informative. Read it if you’re new to acting and the biz or if you’re a veteran in need of inspiration. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s excellent!

Yes, you DO need it
After having David as a teacher, I picked up this book just to see what it was like- let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This is not your run of the mill “how to be an actor/get famous” spiel- this is a funny and incredibly honest book written about making your living in the arts. There were so many anecdotes that made me hopeful as a young actor, and it really motivated me to continue with my craft!
Required Reading for Any Actor
I came across this book by pure chance- I was checking out my university bookstore and it was just screaming my name. Honestly, I'm so glad I picked it up! Being a theatre major means that I am immersed in the art but I do my best to research industry related topics as well, this book was a thorough introduction to show business. I've recommended it to basically everyone I know
The Title Says All You Need to Know
I just finished this must read book written by David Dean Bottrell. I’m glad to know now rather than find out later, and miss opportunities. This book is ‘encouraging and optimistic yet also realistic’ about what it takes to be a working actor, and we need both in this crazy industry, and I just got started! Am I crazy? Heck yeah!
Realistic look at the industry.
Really enjoyed this book. I think it gives a level headed and sober look at being a working actor. What is takes and what to expect. There are no over night successes here. You have to put in the work and look long term. If you're an aspiring actor or a seasoned vet, you'll get something out of this well written look at the biz.

Lots of practical advice, delivered with wit + humor from someone who has been through it all. Buy this book + buy another one for a friend. A must read for any actor.
A pleasure to read and chock full of wisdom!
I just started reading it and I’m enjoying it so much. For me, acting has been really a hobby but this book might give me that nudge I need to actually work at it as a professional.
