Things that make you go “Hmmmmm...”
I’ve just started reading this so I’ll probably update this later. However, the very 1st paragraph of chapter 2 states: “ Open-source software is a movement that started in the software industry in the 1980s. Its origins are up for debate, but most people believe that the concept came about in 1983, when a company called Netscape released its Navigator web browser source code to the public, making it freely available to anyone who wanted to dig through it, modify it, or redistribute it.” This would be a pretty miraculous occurrence since the World Wide Web didn’t exist until 1991 and Netscape was founded in 1994. Guess that goes to show how much you can trust what “most people believe”. I hope the rest of the book is more accurate.
Word Press is only for computer geniuses
My poor rating is not just for this book, but for everything to do with Word Press. I've read everything I could get my hands on and, despite college computer classes, Word Press is the most difficult program I've ever used. I have purchased my hosting for 3 years, but had to have help with just naming my site. I even read a book that was 829 pages long. It might as well have been written in Swahili for all the good it did. Word Press is just a very difficult program. I've wasted over $1000 and countless hours of work and worry. I'm going to give my stuff to someone else - if I can find someone I dislike that much!
Not easy for WP newbies, poorly edited
You’d think a book with such a title, and in its 4th edition no less, would make it easy for “dummies” to get help with WP. But lo and behold, between confusing organization and typos, it befuddles a dummy like me more than it helps. For example, what exactly is a theme, what are it’s components? These are not explained before the mechanics is presented. Why should I use a theme vs a template or just ad hoc? I’m really confused. And some of the earlier chapters give you code snippets without explaining what language this is and why they matter. Also, occasionally there is contradictory information due to updates to WP and poor editing. Very disappointed.
VERY big book with VERY much info
Kind of hard to navigate, and often, what I want to know has a reference to another chapter. That having been said, there's a huge amount of info there. I built a website many years ago in HTML. A family member upgraded it to WordPress several years ago, but I was not happy with it. This time, I'm doing it over my self, with some important help from this book and the host's tech support. It's still in progress, but it's live and better. Glad to have this book!
Not helpful
Thought this book would help me learn Wordpress. It didn't. It is mostly set up for bloggers. Every chapter, she references you to another chapter for more info. You will do way better to just look up various tutorials and youtube videos.
An excellent book
This book is from a developer of experience. She generously shares a bunch of her tricks, secrets and advice. It is surely good for beginners but it goes beyond and this is a very good new! First I decided to buy the Kindle version but soon I realized it was better for me to have the hardcover (paperback) version because this is now a real "reference book" that I want to consult often. One of the best books I read about WordPress. After a book like this one, the second step is to take a specialized course in order to be an advanced developer (... if this is your goal!).
Just Started It!
I had a new role thrust upon me at work, and need to learn about WordPress. I am about 25% into the book, but I am learning a lot. This book is a behemoth of a book, but I expect to learn a lot. I have purchased many Dummies books, but I have recently actually started reading them from cover to cover. They are really good starter books on the subjects. This one is no exception!
Worth it even if you aren’t a total dummy
Really easy to use & understand. I knew a bit about the program but am still glad I bought the book. Great guide
Comprehensive guide for all levels.
Comprehensive guide for all aspects of world press. Love the way it is organized by topic. Handy index makes it easy to use for reference.
Excellent reference
With the moving target that is WordPress, this book does a pretty good job of covering, not just the basics, but the details as well. I'm keeping this book, since I'm old school and prefer good old fashioned books.
