Simple, safe remedies for pregnancy, childbirth, lactation, and newborns.
Now in its 24th printing. A confirmed favorite with pregnant women, midwives, childbirth educators, and new parents. Packed with clear, comforting, and superbly helpful information.
Beginning with the two months before pregnancy, herbs are enlisted to provide safe, effective birth control, or to help ensure pregnancy, even in the most difficult of situations. A special list of teratogens, including herbs to avoid before pregnancy, is included, as is a section on herbs to improve the father's fertility and reduce the risk of birth defects.
Once pregnancy has occurred, herbs are safe and beneficial allies in reducing the distress of pregnancy, including hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, morning sickness, emotional changes, anemia, muscle cramps, bladder infections, and preclampsia. Tasty recipes and clear directions make use easy and fun.
Herbs take a starring role in labor and delivery -- whether initiating labor, increasing energy, diminishing pain, or staunching postpartum bleeding -- and in postpartum care of the mother's perineum, breasts, and emotions, and the infants umbilicus, skin, scalp, digestive system, and immune system.
Humorous, tender, and detailed, this classic text is supported by illustrations, references, resource lists, glossary, and index.
Includes herbs for fertility and birth control. Foreword by Jeannine Parvati Baker.

Indispensable wisdom for women
Get this book. Then gift it to a woman who needs it, then repeat. This book is the main reason why I had the mental and physical preparation necessary to have a pain-free, natural home birth and a rapid rebound after. I still use herbal formulas in this book to support my health 12 years later. I've purchased and given away at least 8 copies of this book to friends & family. If you're interested in supporting your health as a woman, whether pregnant or not, I can't recommend this book (or her others) enough. Susun offers sound, nutrition-centric recipes and herbal formulas that are safe and supportive of overall health, while bringing us back in touch with the wild (FREE), native plants that surround us. Her "herbal ally" philosophy is one we'd all benefit from adopting.
Some useful tidbits, but dated, and questionable in other parts.
I really respect Susan Weed and have another book of hers, but this one I felt could have used an update. I'm all for natural living, and use some of this knowledge in tandem with conscious, balanced living. I don't see any one way as gospel nor do I discredit using multiple techniques and practices. What I mean is, I use herbs when it seems safe and sound. That said, I am currently seeing midwives and planning a natural birth, but some of the info they have given me conflict with the info in Weed's book. Some of the info in the book even seems to conflict with itself. I'm not entirely confident following a lot of the info in here. I'll probably reference it once in a while, just a cross reference, but not sure I would recommend it to anyone.
Keep by the bed
Pregnant and wanting to stay healthy in a gentle holistic manner that is completely supportive of your balance and your baby's well being? Susun Weed is a respected and highly knowledgeable herbalist of many many years. [Check out her Wise Woman University to learn so much more...not about her but FROM her.] I birthed all four of my children at home without drugs, without extreme measures, and even through some tough outer stressors....with Susun Weed's The Childbearing Year on my bedside table, the kitchen counter, in the diaper bag, the car... basically "to hand" because one never knows when the wisdom of an experienced elder might be needed, especially when pregnant. Susun uses a very readable style to keep your interest. And of course the book is arranged so that you can go straight to the section pertinent to your current circumstances. Susun's writing style invokes a calm sense of balance by setting up the many possible solutions in a logical and progressive pathway through each section or condition discussed. The reader gets to stay with the simplest solutions or can choose to move on to more powerful solutions. She is vigilant to sharing responsibly, so that you the reader can make the decision of trying alternatives and/or when you should bring conditions to your primary provider's attention. I wish I could express this more succinctly...all I can say is: if you prefer to avoid overly pharmaceutical measures and invasive procedures and are choosing to maintain your good health all the way through, from pre-conception to pregnancy to birth and on to the "fourth trimester" of breast feeding and returning your body back to pre-pregnancy state, this book is an excellent guide to keep you on track with all the details. And the writing is like sitting with your grandmother sharing stories while being very informative. Susun is a brilliant and experienced teacher. And if you are reading because you or a loved one is including a new one soon, Congratulations! ;)
Her emmenogoues ( bringing on menses or labor) in tincture form are recommended for helping labor
Susun Weed comes from a practicing stand point of using single herbs in hot water infusions and in food. Her emmenogoues ( bringing on menses or labor) in tincture form are recommended for helping labor. Herbal medicine is old medicine and it takes decades to learn so I think some newer herbal medicine people are taking more precaution due to the newer forms available in pills and tinctures. Today's contraindications may be due to using standardized herbal medicine which lacks the safety buffers that whole plant medicine has allowed us. Many are using herbs more like prescription drugs today. Susun Weed is about using safe and nourishing herbs like nettles and alfalfa and oats. Heroic herbs like blue cohosh when labor is difficult.
My favorite collection books
Along time ago I let someone borrow this book and I never seen it again so I re-bought it and it’s something I should’ve never let anyone borrow and I’ll never do that again. It’s my favorite but I didn’t know the value of it when I let someone borrow it. But this book is amazing and has everything a child there and mother needs to know especially for holistic purposes. Definitely something I’ve been reading and always go back to for resources.
All of Susun Weeds books are great for your health!
Another book bought to give to a young woman. Sharing experiences, sharing knowledge that's what older women passed down to other's over the centuries before the modern medicalization of health care by men. Susun Weed books have traveled with me day by day through my ever changing personal journey. I am a better, healthier, more spiritual compassionate person for it...thank you Susun Weed for sharing your knowledge, your experience and your love. When I grow up I want to be just like you...:) Your Menopausal Years saved my life....:) peace
A gold mine!
I wish I would’ve had this book sooner or as a new mom. It would’ve helped me in so many areas. As a mom of almost 6, this book is a treasure. It lists issues or problems in order from infertility, to preconception, and pregnancy to postpartum years! It’s an absolute gold mine!!! Then it lists recipes and varieties on prepping them and everything, an absolute precious book! Must own and would recommend. I’ve already gifted 2 to new moms.
Interesting and Informative
There's a lot of useful information in this book, from diet and exercise recommendations for preventing numerous pregnancy discomforts and ailments, to herbal preparations to help labor along, to methods for preventing and treating common newborn problems. I haven't actually had a baby myself, but there are herbal preparations for raising blood iron levels which I have used successfully. (I found those in other sources originally, but I can attest to their effectiveness.) The author even provides detailed instructions for making numerous herbal remedies for common pregnancy and childbirth-related, and newborn ailments. This is a great book to refer to if you want to try to avoid allopathic remedies (which can often be too strong, have problematic side effects, or be contraindicated in pregnancy) for any of these problems, or if you're just interested in learning things you can do for yourself without visiting a doctor or pharmacy. There is a small amount of woo-woo stuff (telling you to sit and listen to the plants before picking, or recommendations to put up tinctures under a full moon, etc.) I found this a little off-putting, but it's fairly easy to ignore that and just take the information you find useful.
Fantastic Resource
So this is the type of book you have to read and take away from it what you need. Used it with my first pregnancy and had an intense but fast natural birth with barely any bleeding. I also healed up quite fast and had no symptoms of depression. I used the recommended herbs to help bring up my milk supply (which was initially not enough to feed my daughter), and used it to help heal the damage caused by a bad latch. Recommended hers to help lower another friends supply after she was overproducing- also worked. I highly recommend this book to all moms that are interested in having a natural healthy pregnancy. Several of my friends purchased this book for themselves after looking over mine (also resulting in great births-fyi) I haven't tried all the remedies in this book, but the ones I have tried worked.
Great book!
This went down like a tall glass of water on a very hot day! I prefer to approach health and well-being in a more natural way, yet finding new, reputable sources on how to do that can be a challenge. Especially where pregnancy and newborns are concerned! I am expecting, and read this and felt a deep reassurance that I can take care of my baby, and do it in ways that are more in tune with nature than what is most readily presented from a more conventional Western medicine point of view. I was also happy that some of the mail order business for fresh and dried herbs are still around and in business! It's like take a step back and get in tune with the wonderful healing available to us through nature.

A Must Read
I love Susan Weed, she is an amazing herbalist! This is my 3rd copy of this book(I kept loaning it to pregnant friends who got to keep them as they loved the book). Now I've used it with my own pregnancy (currently 9 months) and I couldn't be happier. It's a must read for any expectant Mother(or even those looking for natural forms of birth control)!
I am so happy I found this book
I found this book after I was 4 months pregnant. This has been the best guide I have found so far for what herbs you can use and not use. It is so hard to find any herbal suggestions during pregnancy. The advice given is not scientific studies, but what midwives and such have used over the years. She is honest about what she has used in her profession and what others in her profession have used. I have used a few of the teas during my pregnancy and I really look forward to using the herbs and such for lactation help and help with any issues with the baby. I am not a total organic or DIY person, but after a natural health doctor "cured" me 5 years ago with just probiotics and herbs after years of battling sicknesses (many doctors just gave me drugs that never really fixed my problems), I look for more natural solutions first before going to artificial drugs.
I recommend this book
I bought a copy after borrowing it from my in-law. Aside from the quirky intro to fairies, etc., it was very helpful as a novice to herbs, alternative options, and a new mom. Organization was easy to follow, and use as a "quick reference". I truly believe it helped with a pleasant home birth, breastfeeding, and child care as a new mom.
Definitely get this book!
This book is incredible! Every single remedy I tried worked amazingly well. They sound odd, some of them, but boy do they work. Such a wonderful resource for hopeful, expectant, and nursing mothers!
A must-have reference book
Susun Weed is an astounding woman. Her knowledge of a woman's body and how to promote one's health is beyond compare. I have an almost complete collection of her works and will soon finish this collection.
Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year
Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year is a good book. I recommend it. Carin
A must have book for women that want natural alternatives.
I highly recommend this book for those seeking to become pregnant, already pregnant, with nursing babes and little ones... also for natural health practitioners and midwives Great herbal recommendations for all sorts of issues that arise from preconception ( fertility promoters) all the way to recommends for colic, lactation issues & even diaper rash. One of the best herbal books for women.
Amazing Herbal Wisdom for Women During Childbearing Years
Whether you are trying to conceive, trying not to conceive, are currently pregnant, or you just had a baby, this book is an Herbal Bible. Susun Weed is an expert on herbs and the art of natural healing and maintaining health. I recommend this book to any women who fits the above description. I have bought the book, gifted the book, and have now downloaded it on Kindle. A 5 Star, must add to your library.... From Late Menstral Cycles to Morning Sickness to being Enemic to Back Aches to Stalled Labor to Breastfeeding.... This book covers all the basics.
Mother and baby
Great information, has lots of info on natural remedies using herbs for everything to do with pregnancy and postpartum along with baby.
Good book
This book has a lot of good information in it - for pregnant moms especially! But it also has information useful for those with newborns and young infants as well, or those trying to conceive (or trying not to conceive). Plenty of specific recommendations. Great buy. Highly recommended. One of my only books I don't let anyone borrow because I like to have it on hand at all times in case I have a pregnant friend in need of advice.
Great book for doulas and midwives
It's been a long time since I bore any children, but this book has been a fantastic companion when I've served as a doula. I recommend the book to pregnant women when I meet them, and as things come up through the pregnancy and after, I suggest specific sections of the book to help out. The book also good for women who are not pregnant whether or not they wish to become pregnant just now as it discusses birth control methods and herbs to improve reproductive health overall.
Kindle version makes it easy to look up information
I have a lot of questions about herbs and their use in pregnancy, but they tend to be specific. I also have a pile of pregnancy-related books to read, so reading through an entire book on herbs isn't really something I want to do. I purchased the Kindle version of this book, and found that using the search function, I can quickly and easily find answers to my questions. The information in this reference is clear, easy to understand, and reassuring.
Great reference guide!
My wife used this book constantly as a guide for various remedies. She loved it so much she donated her copy to her cousin when she became pregnant, but lamented she would no longer own the book. I immediately ordered us a replacement, much to her delight. We strongly recommend this book to any expecting mothers or new parents.
Very helpful
Filled with tons of wisdom. If you are thinking of having a child, read this book first!
Love Susun Weed
Love Susun Weed. I'll be taking an herbal course from her in the next year, she presents accurate and relevant information in an easy and accessible manner
Book
Very informative
Susan Weed is a blessing
I first bought this book when pregnant in 1987 and have purchased and endlessly referred to all her books since. The author knows the full spectrum, from science to spells and everything in between. She conveys information very clearly and in a way that allows the reader to become proactive in matters of health and well-being, herbally and otherwise. All her books are essential if this path is of any interest to you.
A good reference to have around.
I enjoyed reading the book, but it was awfully short and didn't go into as much detail as I would like. I have a pretty good background in science and I was hoping for more in-depth explanations as to how things work and interact. Still, I think it's a good reference to have around and recommend the book for those interested in learning more than the western medical approach to pregnancy.
Fast service
Bought as a gift
I drank this daily while breastfeeding
Great for increasing milk production!
My favorite herb book for pregnancy!
As a Doula I read lots of pregnancy/herb books and this is by far my favorite. I love the well rounded information!
Great for its purpose
I see questions about safe herbs on baby messages boards all the time. This is a great guide for women that love tea or want some nontraditional assistance for the childbearing years. Downside of it being an older book is that it's references and resources are also older and potentially less accessible.
Fundamental text for herbology
Susun Weed's text serves as an excellent foundation for implementing herbal therapies into your own health regime or for the utilization of herbal therapies in working with pregnant women. Midwives will find this an indispensible text for their practice. It is clear, simple, applicable, and effective. While it is not the most detailed or thorough text on the subject (it is not intended to be), it serves as a splendid introduction to using herbs as an effective therapy in maintaining women's health.
I love Susun Weed
I have bought a copy of this book for every one of my sisters! I wish I could buy one for every woman on earth!!
Five Stars
Can't beat a Susun Wise book
Came early
Needed this book for midwifery class
Four Stars
Fascinating
A complete book
I am so impressed with this book! It is very complete. There are herbs for every aspect of a pregnant woman's life. Many of the remedies are also good for everyone. There are herbs for fertility, birth control, morning sickness, cramps, mood changes, bladder infections...and the list goes on. They even tell you how to make your own tinctures. Job well done!!
Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year
This book was recommended by so many books I've read, I figured it had to great and it is. It goes through herbs for trying to become pregnant, trying NOT to become pregnant and when you are pregnant. It also includes some non-herbal, non-medicinal home remedies, such as doing a hand-stand in the pool to re-position a breech baby.
A bible of what herbs are helpful/safe/unsafe before/during/after pregnancy
My Dr & midwife recommended this book because I had so many questions about what herbs, etc was safe/unsafe/benificial during pregnancy. LOVE this book.
Pretty thorough.
Great to have on hand during pregnancy and the first year of breastfeeding. Could have been more thorough in terms of listed ingredients as well as descriptions, but gave a good general idea- although I did usually need to supplement with a follow-up internet search or call to the midwife.
Never Outdated
I use this book as a reference for clients and I've gifted it to friends and relatives who are pregnant. My favorite obstetrician was also happy to get one, he thinks the remedies for pregnancy problems are safer than some things he can prescribe. Thank you Susun for preserving this information.
Susun never disappoints
Susun Weed has to be one of my favorite herbalists and favorite nonfic authors. Her writing style is super simple and easy to understand with a lyricism that makes it beautifully poetic. I do wish that there had been more on the "getting pregnant" part of the spectrum though.
Very happy with this purchase. Every woman should have this resource.
Amazing book! Now that I've had the chance to read this book, I can say that every woman should own one of these books. Especially if they are interested or already active in natural remedies. This book is packed with a whole lot of information. Different chapters in each woman's life comes with a different set or hormonal challenges, as well as nutritional requirements. If you want to listen to your body and take care of it the right way, the natural way, then I would buy this book. It's a great place to start and it's packed with a lot of information, that would take a whole lot of time to research individually. Great for my herbal resource collection. Very well written and easy to understand.
Very informational
Great read very informational
Excellent book.
Very informative.
A lot of good information for women interested in herbs
I thought this was very informative. A lot of different herbs were included, many of which I had never heard of before. I liked that it covered several different problems and phases, such as fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, etc. I liked that it also discussed different kinds of herbal preparations. It's a good reference guide for women who want to use herbs.
great library addition
I bought this on the recommendation of an herbalist and have liked what I have read so far. It is more a reference book so you really only need it when looking up natural remedies for specific ailments. Very informative.
Susun gives lots of great alternatives to help women with various issues common to ...
I have had this book for about 20 years - as a midwife I have found it absolutely invaluable - I still use it as much today as I did 20 years ago. Susun gives lots of great alternatives to help women with various issues common to pregnancy.

Happy with this purchase
Purchased for my daughter when she was pregnant with her third baby. She has referred to it many, many times. Happy with this purchase.

Excellent book for expecting women. Highly recommend.
Great book
A Wise Woman recommended me this book. It is very interesting! I am drinking some of the herbal teas mentioned on this book. Good stuff!
Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year
Fast delivery. Good book for any pregnant Mom-to-be who wants to have their baby naturally WITHOUT using drugs. Excellent book. Almost can't be beat. Used it myself when I gave birth to three children. Now bought another copy for my daughter-in-law to read and apply the precise techniques for natural childbirth.
Very informative, helpful book
Ok, if you aren't a newage-y type you have to skip all the flakey goddess-type stuff in the intro. You get past that and you have an excellant reference for pregnant women. I am a Christian who is interested in holistic approaches to health, esp when pregnant and this is a must have reference in my opinion. You will find stuff in here that no conventional doctor can tell you. For example, the only thing that saved me from heartburn and acid reflux attacks at night when pregnant was to nibble on almonds. What doctor is going to tell you that??? It works like a charm when you feel one coming on and it's good for you. Just one example of many. Anyone interested in herbs will love this book as well. If you want to safely use herbs while pregnant, this book will educate you. This book is a favorite of mine because it has the kind of wisdom that women used to know and share with each other, the kind of wisdom we have begun to lose. It is recaptured here. You and your baby will be healthier for having read it.
rarely found treasure
It is hard to find some sound documents in English about herbs in this topic. TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) uses herbs and acupuncture to treat patients. To get some knowledge about ancient solution that has been proved over thousands of years, it is not easy. Thanks to the author, some general information about herbs is revealed in this book. Can not wait to see her other books.
Great book for any home herbalist
Great info
Wonderful!
I found Susan Weed after suffering with a painful breast cyst for over 6 months which painkillers did nothing for. Using Susan's herbal compresses I was back to normal after only one week and with no painkillers. It is wonderful to feel good again! Thank you personally Susan Weed for helping me feel better!
One Star
Not worth my money.
Wish I found it sooner
Clear concise compassionate information that works... If you haven't found a Naturopathic Dr. or A "True" Midwife, this book can set you in the right direction. I only wish I had it sooner. The information contained within, from fertility to pregnancy etc. is right on. A well written read, Best wishes for a happy healthy baby!
Great book by the wise Susun Weed!
Excellent resource for midwives and herbalists, Susun Weed is a great source of herbal knowledge, she has lots of information and recipes.

A Must for every mother
This book has become a family tradition. I am great-grandpa, and I have given a copy of this book to every new mother in our family. I was introduced to this book by an old mid-wife friend years ago, and it has been recommended by her colleagues to all of their new mothers as an essential reference book.

Wise Woman Childbearing Year
My daughter just gave me a new granddaughter, she already has 1 boy. My other daughter has 2 boys. I feel like the best thing I can do for them as a mother is give them their copy of this book. It has helped me answer questions that I have had 30 some years ago. Thank you Susan Weed for being compelled to write to women and let us know things about our bodies and answer out questions. Thank you for being a true grandmother to all of us your sisters and to Grandmother Earth. Can we look forward to another Series No.2 in this collection? I only wish that I had this book 7 years ago because there were so many questions I could not answer. And you have helped us become closer. There were questions they wanted to ask me, but couldn't and by letting them read this book they are able to get those questions answered. You certainly have brought this family of women together. Now I feel in my soul we can go on to become the wise women we are supposed to be. Blessed Be! Rebecca Clark
It was recommended to me
It was recommended to me, and I in turn would recommend it to anyone who wants to use herbs to help with pregnancy.

This resource has been SO helpful as I am creating resource files for my future midwifery clients and midwifery education submissions. Susun Weed is my absolute go-to herbalist expert with so much experience and knowledge to impart upon women. I've found this text to be incredibly helpful in demystifying the use of herbs during pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period. My quest for more information on Red Raspberry Leaf led me to purchase this text and I'm so glad I did. As some of you may know, the use of RRL in pregnancy is somewhat controversial. Susun explains all of the practical uses of the herb for conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding and instilled me with confidence that will allow me to inspire and empower other mothers!
Wise woman herbal for the Childbearing Year
What an incredible addition to my library. I bought more than one for my daughters-in-law. A must have for people working on living off the grid.

a must have
informative book
great information! Though before I do anything with herbs, I make sure to run it by my midwife.
Best pregnancy/postpartum herb book!
This was my first herb book and still my favorite! I am a student midwife and doula and this has helped me SO MUCH with the women I assist.
Definitely OUTDATED
This book was great...20 years ago. With my first child, who is now 17, I loved this book and found it very informative. Now with my third child on the way I thought I'd pick up a copy again only to find it to be quite outdated. I would recommend it for a general over view of helpful herbs and such, but now that I read it again, I realize how some of the "helpful advice" contradicts itself several pages later...leaving a mother to be with more unanswered questions. Some stuff is still useful today, but there is info in this book that is just not up to date...which is understandable since it was written almost 3 decades ago. So, with that being said...I have it on my shelf as another reference book, but nothing that I would absolutely rely upon for the most sound advice. Take heed as you read and get those grains of salt ready...
A must read
Susun is the best. Invaluable information.
Wise Women
LOve Susan Weed I am so happy to have been able to get ahold of this book . She is a wonderfull teacher and very generous with her knowledge . May we all have a wise woman in our neighberhood , and with her books around there can be!
Great info..
Very good info...a lot of good stuff about childbearing that I didn't know. Also gave many remedies that I had not heard of .
A Great, Classic Herbal
Weed organizes the book so you can easily find what you need and codes the remedies in a way to help you decide in which order to try them. This helped with all three of my pregnancies years ago and is still one of the best.

Great information. I recommend this book to everyone now!

There is truly wisdom in this book. Susan S. Weed brings herbal knowledge down to earth.
Exteremely Handy!
I keep this book with me always! It's an excellent reference when you need a quick referral for a client, or even for your own pregnancy. Would recommend this to anyone looking for natural, herbal remedies during a woman's fertile years.

Wise Susun! Thank you!
Definitely a book worth having and refering to from time to time. I felt inspired reading this book!
Looking forward to using this book during my pregnancy!
Such great ideas for natural remedies to pregnancy issues we all run into at one point or another.

this book has great tips and resources for caring for yourself naturally and your baby during the newborn phase. I really do love it.
Some Goddess stuff but overall good reference
My only concern with this book is that it is comprehensive almost to a detriment. It includes "natural" methods to induce miscarriage which is something I personally am at odds with - but the author also mentions hesitation with the methods and only included them to make the book complete. As such, it does have a lot of good info and if you can ignore some of the more "wiccan" comments about Goddesses and Mother Earth stuff, there is much good info that can be gleaned from it.
Natural healing
I highly recommend for all who prefers natural healing. It helps me very well.

Amazing book. Like a bible of health remedies even if you're not pregnant
Great info if you look past the Hippy talk
Great info if you look past the Hippy talk. Mainstream doctors won't tell you this info. They aren't taught this in med school. Wish I had it with my first pregnancy!
Birth and Your Baby's First Year are enough of a library to encourage and teach nearly anyone so that they can all understand ho
I am a retired Naturopathic Physician (N.D.) and have assisted, as a lay midwife, at a dozen births. I also knew Susun Weed (tho not very well) many years ago. Her advice is always helpful and spot on. Even the few times when I disagree with her conclusions, I admire the way she explains how she reached them. This book and Ina May's writings and Elizabeth Davis's Hearts and Hands and Miranda Castro's Homeopathy for Pregnancy, Birth and Your Baby's First Year are enough of a library to encourage and teach nearly anyone so that they can all understand how and why natural home birthing methods are far safer and way more fun!
Good reference book to have in your bookshelf
Good reference book to have in your bookshelf, if attempting to get pregnant or are pregnant and or, if you just had a baby.
A must read for pregnant women!
Great information for any pregnant woman and new mom. I wish I had purchased this before my third trimester, but it will definitely be getting a lot of use if we ever decide to have another baby.
Love it!
I love having printed books to reference in my home and this one has been a nice addition to the collection. I'm always hesitant to take any remedy, even natural even though that's my preferred method. I have to be in pretty bad shape to want to resort to medicine. I like that this book takes you through the various stages of pregnancy and lists what's safe for each. I was recommended this book by another natural mama and am very glad to have it.
Great first herbal book
I am a childbirth instructor and doula. I was looking for ways to expand my knowledge of birth and motherhood with an herbal perspective. This was definitely that book!

Somewhat outdated book with potentially dangerous advice. Rated 3 stars instead of 2 simply because there are some good pieces of information to be found--but only if you already have a pretty good grasp of herbs, oils, and other natural medicines and their effects and safety. Negatives: Some oils/herbs used in the books safety are widely disputed as being unsafe by midwives and traditional doctors alike. During hemorrhage, the book gives advice to try and self treat, rather than getting to the hospital immediately. Concerning advice regarding not taking babies to the doctor when sick until exhibiting dire symptoms of distress. Positives: Using common sense and a good base knowledge of herbs, one can find some great recipes for teas, infusions, etc.

It is easy to read and understand
This book is a wealth of information for women during their childbearing years. The author gives a lot of helpful advice concerning a healthy diet and herbal supplements. It is easy to read and understand.
title a little misleading
i wanted to use this book to help me with fertility mainly and fertility was the shortest chapter. she recommends raspberry leaf + red clover teas alternating with nettle tea every week. that's what the fertility chapter entails. however she spent a large portion of the book on abortifacents or concoctions for abortions. then there is some herbal advice on a few things for pregnancy complications that may be useful later. she mentions seeing fairies, spirits and praying to the plants just fyi. i was a little amused by this bc i worship the creator and not the creation, if you know what i mean, and after reading about 1/3 or more of the book on abortion when i'm trying to get pregnant, it was a bit much. i think this book may be worth reading but maybe there are better books out there that truly focus on conception, childbearing, and post partum, lactation in greater detail.
Five Stars
Love this book! Great information, well written, clear and easy to understand. I really like Susun Weed.
herbal know-how
Susun Weed's book about herbs and the "Childbearing Year" left me with more questions than answers. I feel that it is not for someone beginning to take an interst in herbs in pregnancy.
Not my favorite
Minimal information, kind of disappointed by how short and simple it is.
I love this book
I love this book. I'm so excited to read this carefully and thoughtfully to prepare my own herbal recipes.
but rather allow the body to become better through more natural means
I have had seven children and have used this book through all of the pregnancies and even in their early years as infants. A marvelous companion for those who don't want to use drugs, but rather allow the body to become better through more natural means. I am now using this book to help my daughter with her first birth. Thank you.
Dated Information
I purchased this book, hoping for a little more insight into herbal use during the childbearing years. The information in the book is dated. The book was written over a decade ago, and as far as I can tell has not been updated. The herbal information in it is still pertinent. The dating wouldn't be an issue if the book stuck to strictly herbal remedies, as you'd think it would, but it delves into newborn care- which is where the information is useless. (Example: The author says that if you have a son in the United States, he will automatically be circumcised- which is not the case anymore.) I was anticipating a little more on the fertility side. However, the fertility portion of the book is miniscule. Most of the fertility chapter is about birth control, permanent sterilization, and abortion- all of which I am morally opposed to, so the book offers me little personally useful information on that end. The book is a little hokey. It is beautifully written, very poetic and beautiful. But feeling for the energy in a dried herb just isn't my thing.
Five Stars
God-given traditional medicine that never goes out of style.
Some Good and some dangerous info
While there are many good points to this book (red raspberry leaf, for example) there is some outdated and dangerous advice. Rh factor and pre-eclampsia are not best treated with herbs, for example. While one can make the case that modern medicine has many shortfalls, it treats serious diseases quite well. For aches and pains of pregnancy, this book is great. However, for serious conditions, herbs are not much help. Pre-eclampsia can not be treated through diet, for example, and is a very dangerous condition where a woman must be monitored extensively. Saying that diet prevents it is misinformation.
Outdated book!!!
Really outdated. Would not buy again, was expecting something useful, but all the info is so outdated, I wouldn't trust it.
A Good Introduction to Herbs Applied to Pregnancy
Herbal Medicine is a big subject and I suspect that there are few single books that can give a comprehensive overview. I think perhaps THE HERB BOOK by John Lust and BACK TO EDEN by Jethro Kloss, and PLANETARY HERBOLOGY by Michael Tierra may come the closest. This book by Susan Weed is not so comprehensive, but she packs a lot of information related to pregnancy and childbirth that is useful. Although it is about pregnancy and childbirth with herbal support, the book can be a useful introduction to herbal medicine. There is a section on how to prepare the herbal formulas, a section on terminology, herbs and vitamins, and an index. What is curious is that the book seems to lack the usual caveat that goes "this book is not intended to be a replacement for medical care or a doctor, if you have any doubts about whether or not the information is right for you, seek a health professional, the author cannot assume an responsibility for...". It seems that the author wants to empower women to find out what works for them and not lean on health authorities, so that there is a parallel clause that encourages the woman to go within and feel what is right for them. I suspect that she is going back to the midwife, herbalist, curandera, and wiccan type traditions in this kind of orientation, but does encorporate a fair number of scientific footnotes. There are some cautions that she places fairly frequently in her book that are worth heeding. If this book is to be used as a primary source during pregnancy, it would be worth reading from cover to cover at least once to get a feel for the whole approach, rather than look up something on the fly when the challenges are happening. There is a biochemical individuality that makes standardized advice not always work and the female body changes a lot all the way through the birth process, having different needs and challenges each step of the way. I noticed one reviewer seemed to take the advice in the book and had complications. All in all, I am impressed with how much ground Susan Weed covers and suspect that as a person she is brimming with information, with much of it learned helping a lot of people one on one. I think the limits of this book would be true for almost any book trying to cover as much as she does in about 171 pages. As good as this book is, I would recommend supplementation with at least another book, getting a second opinion or two, just to keep perspective, and to realize one's limits if some complication comes up that feels big and find a health professional, holistic or conventional, that one feels comfortable with.
One of the Best
This book is the first I turn to for all pregnancy related research. I adore this herbal. I have three copies of it and would pick up a fourth if I saw it at a used book sale. I've lent it out many times. I've found Weed's insights, recommendations, and warnings to be fantastic and knowledgeable, although I've occasionally disagreed with her choices for certain issues. Personally, I always use two or three herbals to form an opinion about whether a particular herb is suitable for my needs. Multiple viewpoints are especially helpful for controversial herbs or when dealing with high stakes issues like pregnancy.
Whew! This book became essential to me
I came to my midwifery career (see my memoir, BABY CATCHER, Scribner 2002) via the traditional route of nursing school, working in hospital delivery rooms and alternative birth centers, then going to midwifery school, graduating as a CNM. Nowhere along the way was I taught anything about herbs. When I found myself doing home births in Berkeley, CA, many of my clients assumed I was an herbalist. Although I never once claimed to have a knowledge base in that field, I learned enough from Wise Woman Herbal to talk intelligently on the subject. Many women who choose home birth shun not just hospitals but also traditional Western medications. Wise Woman Herbal was always the resource to which I turned when I needed to know if a particular herb a woman wanted to use was safe and/or efficacious in pregnancy. And eventually I carried and recommended certain ones with confidence, especially blue and black cohosh, ginger, and oil of evening primrose. From me and from all midwives when they were new: Thank you, Susan Weed.
Natural ChildBearing Year
WISE WOMAN HERBAL - Childbearing Year Susun Weed Ash Tree Publishing 1986 P.O. Box 64, Woodstock N.Y. 12498 PB 171 $9.95 ISBN # 0-9614620-0-0 Review by: Christina Francine "Aren't herbs dangerous, especially during pregnancy?" a woman asks. "I've heard they cause cancer," says another. "I can't imagine what they'd do to my unborn baby." "Its witchery," adds a third, "and I'll stick to regular doctors, thank you." These are still many women's view on using herbs, a mid-wife, or a holistic approach, pregnant or not. Vast numbers though, are looking into treating themselves, pursuing holistic doctors, and using midwives. They seek natural. In essence, women are going back to the skill they learned millions of years ago. They knew their bodies then and how to care for them. Then, along came those who wanted further power and named this skill witchery. Suddenly men knew women's bodies better than they did. Weed leads readers back to this natural skill and power. She provides preventative and healing remedies, herbal preparations, and points of safety, for before, during, and after pregnancy. Weed even added a chapter on newborns. Book Contents Include: -Foreword -Introduction -Using This Book -Using Herbs Safely -Before Pregnancy with sub-headings & categories (pages 1-12) -During Pregnancy with sub-headings & categories (pages 17-49) -Childbirth with sub-headings and categories (pages 55-74) -After Pregnancy with sub-headings and categories (pages 77-84) -Your Infant with sub-headings and categories (pages 95-114) -Herbal Pharmacy with sub-headings and categories (pages 121-139) -Appendix 1 (Herbal sources of vitamins & minerals) -Appendix 2 -Glossary -Index Regular doctors and conservative medicines have their place, but herbal doctors and medicines do as well. Just why are many women going back to treating themselves, visiting holistic doctors, and interested in natural? I believe deep down women know what works, what's safest, and what feels right. They're reacquainting themselves with nature, and listening to and taking responsibility for their own bodies. `Childbearing Years' is for women wanting to take care their growing baby and of their bodies naturally. Weed's style of presenting, and authenticity of facts, is straightforward and easy to understand. Sketchings, alongside pages, are charming, as well as added notations. Everything about this book is comforting, nurturing, and encouraging. A valuable resource.
A great reference.
I have a first edition copy of this book. My mother used it as a reference guide with all four of us. She handed it down to me. I am currently 7 months pregnant with my first child. Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year has so much useful information. Like all books, though, it is only a reference and not intended to take over the role of an actual midwife. I like that this book promotes herbs, herbal remedies, and positive thinking; and puts them in the light they should rightly be in. Susun Weed is a wise woman with many years of experience. I emailed her a few months ago and asked if any of the information in the book was out of date, seeing that it was written in the early eighties. I received a response that nothing was out of date. Makes sense considering that herbal remedies have been around much longer than traditional medicine. If you are looking for a fantastic reference book that tells you how it really is in the herbal remedy world- get this book! If you are a yuppie jumping on the "natural" bandwagon that is so popular now- stick with your doctor's advice. Some of the information in the book may be unsettling to you. Examples being- natural ways of carrying out an unwanted birth; marijuana for morning sickness; avoidance of common medical practices (ex. ultrasound, dopplar); avoidance of caffeine, chocolate, hair dyes (things most people can't live without); visualization therapies; the list goes on. All in all, I have received so much guidance from this little book. I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind and a bit of sense. Thanks.
I got this book from a friend who was past ...
I got this book from a friend who was past her childbearing time and didn't need it anymore. I was interested in not bearing a child. Emmenagogue Combination on page 149 worked for me. You must be attuned to your body, aware of when to start taking it, take it exactly as described -- waking up in the night to take it on time. I combined it with an emmenagogue brew of my own devising and high doses of vitamin C for about a week. Together, they worked. This was 25 years ago; today women have RU-486. Later, but still pre-RU-486, I thought I might need this Emmenagogue Combination again. I took one dose, and it brought on menstruation 7 days early. So I can say that for me, it worked.
The Go-To Guide for Natural Women's Health
I absolutely adore and live by this book. It is truly one of my favorite resources and the one book that I have kept with me constantly throughout the years. It is a vast and wonderful resource for all women, mothers, and natural health practitioners. It covers everything from herbs for nutrition, remedies, conception and contraceptive, to how to easily and best prepare herbs for various use. This book is an invaluable resource and should be on the book shelf or even in the purse of every health-conscious woman.
Empowering book!
This book is excellent and very good for those who are interested in healing themselves. It is full of very useful information and makes you feel empowered with all the self healing information it holds. I have used this book time and time again for myself and the women around me when needed.
read it over and over while pregnant
this book was the most important tool getting through my first pregnancy. i took raspberry leaf throughout my pregnancy, then squaw vine and cramp bark in my last month. i had a 3 1/2 hour labor with no drugs or procedures! my little girl was so healthy and alert! i don't just say this because i foolishly read the book and tried it with no education to back it up, i am horticulturist and herbalist with 10 years experience. she recommends helpful, healing herbs for pregnancy with great descriptions, dosages, and warnings. as always, do what is comfortable for you but this book can really help if you are looking for a natural childbirth and child-rearing. just make sure you do your research before trying anything, having several opinions can be comforting. i buy a copy for everyone i know is pregnant!
A lifesaver....
I'm not well schooled in herbs or home remedies, but this book was a tremendous help to me during my last two pregnancies. There are not just herbal concoctions, but simple, common-sense solutions for everything from pain to depression to lactation issues. When I was struggling with what might have been a premature birth, I consulted this book and was able to halt my contractions, and afterwards continued a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The knowledge you'll find in these pages is priceless.
An easy-to-read beginner's guide to herbal remedies
This is THE book that I recommend to my students and clients who are interested in using herbs during the childbearing year. It has a logical layout, and clearly gives both risks and benefits of each herbal remedy offered. The New Age aspects of it are not for everyone (myself included), but easy enough to ignore if you so choose. The spirituality of the author does not affect the accurateness of the material.
Good book about herbal childbearing
I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.
Herbal for the childbearing year
I got this book in my last month of pregancy. My hopes where to find some help in getting labor started. My first child was two weeks late and it drove me nuts. I loved it I also had a problem with infertility and this gave me some good ideas to try next time. I loved it and the labor tips and herbal healpers worked well to ease the labor and seem to be much calmer than the first. Even if you don't think the herbal way is best this book is a must read for the pregnant woman/ couples. And the after care info is a goddess sent book of gold. The diaper rash treatments really work. And the nursing fourmla kept my milk flowing even when I had to go back to work and could not pump that much. Hope everyone enjoies the book as much as I did.
The Herbal guide helped me throughout pregnancy and after
I followed many of the recommendations for herbal relief of symptoms and found great relief in them. I believe the herbs and tinctures recommended in this book helped me achieve my goal of a non-medicated labor and delivery, and my post-partum was eased as well. It is my #1 favorite pregnancy book and I give it to all my friends with a bag of red raspberry leaf for their own infusions and uterine toning routine!
This book is AMAZING!
This is a wonderful book... it's concise and to the point... true, it doesn't go into a lot of detail about why things are or aren't good to take, but that info is easily researched... I like that it tells you what to do or not to do in short simple ways... makes it SOOOOOO much easier to find the information I want and need. Throughout this pregnancy my blood pressure has been on the high side... after only a few days of following the cream of tartar protocol (pg 47) my blood pressure is now down to PERFECT!!! This book has greatly improved my health... I recommend it to EVERYONE!
Amazingly helpful book!
As a woman pondering conception, I am endeavoring to learn as much as possible about ways to care for my body in accord with nature. The Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year has proven to be a validating, concise, useful tool. The writing style is akin to an intimate friend whispering her remedies in your ear. Latin nomenclature and common names of the herbs and precise recipes make the suggestions easy to follow. I highly recommend this to anyone who expects to be expecting soon.
For the beginner in natural health/natural childbirth.
My midwife recommended this book and it proved to be my favorite book during pregnancy. It was easy to read and offered advice in many issues of pregnancy and childbirth from fertility issues to infant problems. I was new to herbal medicine and found Weed's guidance easy to follow. This book, along with some raspberry leaf tea, would make a great gift for your pregnant friends.
Great book for the Expecting Mother
This book offers simple, practical advice for general issues that arise during pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. I found the book very helpful and have purchased it for every woman I know who is expecting.
Four Stars
A nice book that helped my wife quite a bit during her pregnancy.
New to herbalism
Last night I bought this book, along with another herbal guide, as my first real entrance into the study of herbs. "Wise Woman" is well organized, practical, and extremely easy to read for the uninitiated. I praise Ms. Weed for this invaluable resource and expect to refer to this book frequently in my upcoming pregnancy.
Incredible and inspiring
Loved all the recipes and resources in the back of the book and great blend of herbal support and body/spirit medicine!
A must have for any woman who is expecting.
I just ordered two copies of this wonderful book for my office. I have a small healing center and women who come to me are into a more holistic and natural way to experience pregnancy and childbirth. This book is a wonderful friend to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and birthing experience. Ms. Weed lists a number of herbal preparations to use for the varying issues that come up during the 'waiting' period and the birthing also. Try it....
Five Stars
Great book to have as a reference. Easy to read as well.
an indispensible guide
I used this guide through two births, and I only wish I'd known about it for my first one. It proved invaluable for remedying problems during pregnancy, making childbirth much easier, and alleviating colic in newborns. Most of the herbs are easy to find for purchase and simple to prepare. I have lent it to friends who also found it wonderfully helpful.
Great book for the "alternative' mom
If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.
A MUST for any MOM 2 BE
Susun Weed along with Rosemary Gladstar
Wise information for an informed birth
Susun Weed is an amazingly insightful herbalist. Herbal for the Childbearing Year is filled with great tips for a natural approach to pregnancy. The book is extremely easy to follow and the herbal recipes are easy to prepare.
Very Informative!
This was a great reference book during my second pregnancy. I used a few herbs during the pregnancy which I believe helped me have a quick VBAC. I would recommend this book to anyone considering using herbs during their pregnancy (pre-natal and post-natal too).
Title should be "Herbal for Pregnancy and Post Partum"
My wife and I were looking for a book on herbals for our 8 month old daughter. While this book looks like it will be an excellent reference for the next time we are pregnant, it barely touches on herbals for babies and toddlers. We are hoping to find a similar book that covers that topic.
Bad advice that can cause your child danger!
This book is giving mis-information about the treatment of newborn jaundice. Susan Weed, the author, does not have a high school education - she is not knowledgeable on the subject which she is giving advice when it comes to the treatment of newborn jaundice. Her advice to use sunlight, as a natural cure can result in the infants death. I have not read other chapters of this book, but would advise that if the information she gives is similar to the advice given in the treatment of jaundice - then you could be risking your child's life. Read her bio at the amazon authors website and buy at your own risk!
You can NEVER go wring with SUSAN WEED💜
You can NEVER go wrong with Susan Weed. She is the most amazing intresting y loving y knowlegable herbalist I know. I had my 1st herb class with her in HS y i still see y love her style best y I'm thrilled to see she has a brand new book coming out next month. I bought this for a young mother. Hospital told her to give her 2 yrs old Tylenol for teething pains y i flipped out y saw this as my contribution to young family whom I talk herbs with whenever I can!💜
Information all women should know
This book was invaluable bto me during many of my pregnancies and postpartum times. It contains a wealth of information about herbs, tintures, and at home remedies. I would be considered a "crunchy mama" and if you are too, then this book is probably one you would like.
excellent information on herbs and how they can guide our body to get where we want & conceive a healthy baby in a healthy body
excellent information on herbs, revealing good working and safe to use "secrets" that where known to many generations of for women (until chemical drugs took over) enabling women to (re)connect with themselves, understand the miraculous functioning of our female body, assist its processes, guide our body to get where we want and conceive a healthy baby in a healthy body - I recommend it to every woman!
wise woman
I had this book 30 years ago lent it to some one never got it back. So when my daughter got pregnant we found it here! Great book Susun can teach you things you never thought about
Classic.
One of my favorite books. Easy to read and use. Good information.
A decent book written in an accessible style and with grace and humour
I bought this to complete my collection of Susun Weed's excellent work on herbs; my copy is a 2nd hand one and contains notes from its original owner, detailing her birth plan and other things. I'm past the age when this might be of practical use to me personally and the book is as much for research. However, there were a number of bits and pieces that have taken my rating down to a three star. One is that on a number of occasions certain herbs are mentioned as being used by non-professional people; given the notes the previous owner wrote in my copy, I can only say it worries me. Herbs are powerful substances, and some are deadly when used incorrectly. Some of these are being recommended in this book. The other matter is that it's worth saying is that this is a book that features herbs that are only available in the USA, so if you live anywhere else in the world, you may struggle to locate a reliable and safe source for these herbs. A decent book, though, written in an accessible style and with grace and humour. My favourite of her books is the Weed Herbal, which condenses pretty much all herbal medicine into a mere six plant repertoire.
Eek, not sold on this just yet, lol...
Was not overwhelmed with this book, despite high hopes. When an author makes recommendations about the clinical efficacy and safety of a herbal remedy based on one case study of a pregnant dog, you're not exactly reassured! Lots of obvious common sense sprinkled in this book, and repeated references to Raspberry Leaf Tea and Nettle Tea as uterine and conception tonics, which is about only useful thing I've taken from it thus far. Haven't written it off entirely just yet, hope to re-read it in a few months and see if my initial reservations still hold, as I want natural, safe, remedies for my and my family's health. 3*.
Woman Herbal
This is an excellent book even though there are some parts of it I might not go along with myself, the main of it is excellent and would make a nice gift for any expecting mother or young couple planning a family. I also bought copy for my friend who was having a baby she was very glad of it. And since had a wonderful baby girl.
Very prompt delivery
Very good book
Lots of info
Good book, just don’t have that variety of herbs on hand
Perfect
Exactly what I was looking for
Wisewoman herbal for childbearing
This is a great book for anyone who is working around birth or for women, who are preferring the natural options for the birthing and pregnancy process. It's more of a reference book, so be good to look into every now and then for herbal remedy's.
Brilliant book, highly recommended!

Good herbal although it has some contraversial recommendations
Good herbal although it has some contraversial recommendations. Take some with a grain or salt and always discuss everything with your midwife or care provider.
If you are pregnant and enjoy using medicinal herbs you should buy this book
As a doula this is one of my books that I reference often and lend out to expecting parents. Packed full of information on very herb imaginable for pregnancy, birth and postpartum. If you are pregnant and enjoy using medicinal herbs you should buy this book!
Great Resource!
Really great resource. I consulted it many times during my pregnancy. I like that the format is easy-to-consult in almost bullet-point form, so you can get to the info quite easily. Nice spacing and good info for moms who want to try natural remedies before mainstream methods.
I used this throughout my entire pregnancy and recommend it to all of my pregnant friends
