A Book About Good Sportmanship

"But I HATE losing! GEEEEZE!"

Wendell HAS to win at everything, and if he doesn't, he whines about it. When Wendell has one of those days where nothing seems to go his way, his mom helps him understand that everything in life doesn't have to be a contest and losing does not make you a loser. In fact, it can make you stronger! She also points out that although it feels great to celebrate a win, winning isn't everything, and whining about things just makes it worse.

"Whiners aren't winners, and winners never whine. You can't win at everything all of the time!"

This creative story addresses two very challenging topics: winning and whining.

Winning isn't everything

Wendell HAS to win at everything, and if he doesn't, he whines about it. This story addresses two social skill topics: winning and whining. When Wendell has one of those days where nothing seems to go his way, his mom helps him understand that everything in life doesn't have to be a contest and that losing does not make you a loser. In fact, it can make you stronger! She also points out that although it feels great to celebrate a win, winning isn't everything. I think this is a great message.

Worked for my autistic son!

This is a comprehensive social story about flexibility and sensitivity. It helped my autistic son who would find it hard to tolerate not winning. What helped the most is the ditty “winners don’t whine and whiners never win”. It’s catchy and can easily be recollected in daily situations to recollect the lessons of the book. The author provides many scenarios and I’m sure any parent would find one that might apply to their child. Only sometimes I felt like there were too many cases, but that’s just my laziness!

Okay

I really want to love this book. But It’s kind of hard to catch up the story. I had to explain to my son what’s going on and I had used my son when I read. As a parent of child with on spectrum, I get it and want him to learn and get this skill tho. I am just not fan of focusing “correcting bad behaviors “. That’s it.

Long but very effective

We own several Julia Cook bools and they are great. She has a great way to pass on messages about certain behaviors that makes my kids actually think about what's wrong and right. Long but not boring. My 7 year old wants to read one of her books every night.

Love to read to kids!!

My 5yr old daughter was sooo excited when she saw the book and related to the character a lot. A little bit of a tongue twister but very fun to read to kids. Many examples of a 'bad day' with a better attitude because we can't always win.

Meh. I'd love to see a book about whining that's not so singularly focused on 'winning' and 'losing.'

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher National Center for Youth Issues in exchange for an honest review on Amazon. I am a parent of three kids, ages six, five, and three. I also teach third grade at a high poverty school in Indiana. I have found several of Julia Cook’s books useful to teach with to both my class and my kids. This book, Winners Don’t Whine and Whiners Don’t Win, will be particularly helpful for my third grade students. Sportsmanship and whining are issues I have to address every year. I find that often times students want to do what is correct and expected, they just don’t grasp what that entails. They have to be taught what we expect- this book helps to do that. In this book Wendell is a student that wants to win at everything (much like many of my 3rd graders). If he doesn’t win, he whines and feels like it was a bad day. Eventually Wendell and his mother have a heart to heart to discuss his attitude and how to handle himself when he loses. The mother provides several useful suggestions. As with many of Julia Cook book we get a “tomorrow’s a brand new day” comment. I enjoy these comment because it allows the character to see his fault, and re-start fresh the next day- without any baggage holding him back. As a teacher, I have said similar comments to students many times. And of course (Spoiler alert) Wendell is able to improve his attitude and feelings. The story itself will keep kids engaged. I recommend it for K- 4th graders. It is a great book to read aloud and have discussion throughout the book. Again, with most Cook’s book, she includes further tips for sportsmanship and whining in the back of the book. These would be useful tips and suggestions for both parents and teachers to try out. Anita Dufalla illustrated this book. She has illustrated other of Julia Cook’s books, including my favorite illustrated one- Peer Pressure Gauge. Despite my liking of previous illustrated books by Dufalla, I personally found this one lacking appeal. I can’t place exactly what it seems to be missing, but it just doesn’t stand out to me as much as her other titles have. This is not to say the illustrations are bad- they are not. I did read this book to my five and six year old, and both were engaged and told me they liked the pictures. I would recommend purchasing this book. It is a great book to read and have conversations off of. While you can give it as a gift and not read it, I would highly recommend discussing the book with kids.

I know some adults that could use this book.

What about a book just focused in whinning?...

Too bad that it isnt a book just about whinning (without focusing on winning or loosing) Whinning is a pretty big issue in itself to lots of kids in all ages!

Back to the 50s

What does this title suggest? I thought we moved away from raising stoic people who are don't acknowledge their or others' feelings. Sure, I know what whining is, but the reason for it should be tackled and not the symptom. This title screams: "I don't want to know how you feel or why. I just want you to stop. Oh, and by the way it does not get you anywhere." Well, thanks (cynical).

it did the trick

I bought this book for my 5 yrs daughter because all she seems to do at the moment is whine......I must admit it has worked. I have only read it once but since I have read it her every time she whines I quote a few things from the book and she stops. the story line isn't the best however it does get the point across and that's all you want.
