Wild Heart on the Prairie is the gripping prequel and companion to the breakthrough historical novel, A Rose Blooms Twice and is the foundation of the acclaimed series, A Prairie Heritage!

The Thoresen brothers, Jan (Yahn) and Karl, have left their native land of Norway and braved many perils and hardships to bring their families to America—the land of freedom and hope. Like thousands of others, Jan and his wife Elli long for the opportunity of a better life and a future for their children.

After enduring an ocean crossing and the arduous journey west, they encounter a land so vast and wide that it defies mastery. Jan finds that his struggles are not only with the land, but with a restless and unmanageable heart. Will Jan find a way to overcome this wild land or will the prairie master him?

Author’s Note: Wild Heart on the Prairie is told in two parts. Part 1 of Wild Heart on the Prairie takes place prior to A Rose Blooms Twice. Part 2 of Wild Heart on the Prairie is the companion to A Rose Blooms Twice and recounts some of the same events of A Rose Blooms Twice, but from Jan’s perspective.

Together these two books, A Rose Blooms Twice and Wild Heart on the Prairie, form the foundation of the series, A Prairie Heritage. I hope you enjoy the stories of these unique and instrumental individuals, Jan and Rose.

Don't let this series slip away from your library!

There are so many reviews, and all I can add is that "I love this series" ! I am a better person for reading all of them and don't want them to stop. I can say so many good things but words fail me, and I ask the author to please write more Prairie Heritage stories! Five Stars and more to the Author. ***

Historically accurate story about the settling of a part of Nebraska

This historical romance is the story of the immigrants who settled the prairie in Nebraska close to my home in Omaha. It tells their story from landing in America, riding the train in a freight car with all their animals and possessions (I did not know that was done!), arriving in Council Bluffs Iowa, the end of the railroad line for the area, (and my home town), crossing the Missouri River and taking care of business in Omaha, and finally settling NW of Fremont (another town I lived in for several years). I found it all historically accurate and enjoyed reading the little bit about these familiar towns and their role in the settlement of the rest of Nebraska. There are few stories about Nebraska, all the pioneer stories having the settlers only going through it on their way to Colorado, California, Oregon, etc, so I really loved reading this book and book 1 "A Rose Blooms Twice". There were so many struggles and sacrifices for the Nebraska settlers, some were truly unique that other areas of the country never had to face. I think many will enjoy this story and learn some new information too! The Thoreson family struggles brought some tears, but their faith and love was overcoming.

An amazing author. Book #2 is a great follow on to A Rose Blooms Twice

How do you write the same story about the same time using two different main characters? By writing two novels! Vicki did that with this second in the series. She tells the same tale from another perspective. Reading the first bk "A Rose Blooms Twice" does not spoil this story. It complements it. As a novelist myself, I am amazed by how she interwove the two stories. My hat is off to you, Ms. Kestell, and I bow to your talent. Thanks for a great read. Now on to #3!

Historically Accurate Novel

I truly loved this book! The detail about the travel from Norway to Nebraska was amazing. I, too, had ancestors that made the same journey to Nebraska in the 1800's, and I was fascinated with the knowledge of the author. The characters were interesting and likeable, and I cried when some of them died (I never cry!). The plot had many twists and turns and I never found it boring. Highly recommended.

Jan Takes Responsibility Seriously, But Will He Ever Have Joy Again?

After reading A Rose Blooms Twice and loving it, I was eager to start Wild Heart on the Prairie. I was slightly put off at the beginning, but soon totally fell into this story also. It is Jan's point of view for much of the story that was told in book one. Again, I had to used many tissues for the tears, but there were happy and funny times also. I really did enjoy the story. Jan was such a good man I like the way Vicki Kestell weaves is God's Word and direction so smoothly and not in a preachy way. I certainly do recommend this series.

Perspective

From one persons perspective in one book to another character with a complimentary perspective in the next book. It is a new type read for me and quite joyful though tears flowed (from me) many times throughout. I can’t wait for the next step (book/legacy) expecting the same. It’s all about network whether it be wires or wireless or the legacy that we all have an opportunity to experience. I pray mine shines bright, not about me, but with Him that I represent.

Told and Recounted

When the Thoresen family immigrates to Nebraska from Norway, they come with more than most for their new start, but they don’t speak English. Even with their supplies, the prairie isn't an easy place to live. The sod has grassroots a foot deep, which makes plowing difficult; all kinds of storms blast the land; drought is always threatening; and locusts can devastate everything. Amid this environment, tragedy is bound to hit. I liked the plot and the characters, especially Jan. However, most of the story was told and not shown, so, instead of becoming involved with what was happening, I stood on the outside observing. With so much head-hopping and rapid changes in point of views, it was almost dizzying, especially in the first half of the book. It was over-packed with too many minute details, like several lists of what they brought and what they bought. At times it wandered all over the place. For example, Soren was talking to a neighbor, it was not following his point of view, there was no one around to hear them, but we see and hear their conversation. In addition, I doubt the ladies would have been canning in the remote Nebraska location in 1866. They also knew a lot about disinfecting and boiling to sterilize. It was first published as LAND OF DUST AND TEARS. This book had a lot of potential, but I didn't find it quite as good as A ROSE BLOOMS TWICE. For one thing, the ending was very weak. It basically just ended without much of a conclusion at all.

So that’s where Jan comes in

I just have a problem with a series that takes stories out of sequence. I understand from reading Girls from the mountain that the driving character here is Rose, do she leads off and we backfill with Jan’s tale and then pick it back up in book 3. As stand alone you would never know but observing the story this book is out of sequence. But as usual, historically and spiritually accurate and uplifting

Wonderfully tied together, Loved It!

I was expecting a prequel, and was pleasantly suprised to find it also overlapped with "A Rose Blooms Twice" giving a new perspective on the original story line. (Note:make sure you read the original first as part 2 of this book will be a spoiler for Rose if you don't) I just re-read the series, so really, I already knew the major plot points of this book, but Vikki beautifully draws you into the story so that when major points you were expecting happen, you hold your breath waiting for the outcome. It was like watching your favorite movie after years, knowing how it will end but having forgot details and having the joy of seeing how things will unfold once more. I love the development of the original characters, the flaws and changes that they went through to become the beloved people of the future story line, as well as the new characters that you quickly grow to love. And once again, the imagery of the book puts you into the scenes, from sights to smells and sounds described beautifully. I just don't know if this or Rose is my favorite now...as they are so perfectly intertwined...I'll need a special copy that puts both together chronologically now!

Pretty Good!

This book is the second in a series, and I did not read the first book. This book is stand-alone, however, so I did not feel disoriented while reading it by having missed the first. The story was interesting, and most of the characters and dialog were easily believable for the time and place, although, strangely, Rose was a little flat and one-dimensional, I thought, unlike the rest of the characters. The book was long, too, by modern standards--so much so that I wondered if the author was attempting to write an America-based KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER! There were a relatively few copy-editing errors, primarily occasional punctuation and spelling, but once, a milk goat was given a pronoun sex change! :D

Gripping, Poignant, Inspiring and Satisfying!

Another great book by Vikki Kestell - a prequel and a Perfect companion to A Rose Blooms Twice - adding more depth to the multifaceted characters and making them live within our hearts once again. Descriptive writing that takes you into the prairie of the 1800's and the Thoresens into your heart. The faith of the characters and the author is the foundation of which the series is anchored and is rock solid. Inspiring us without preaching at us - wonderfully refreshing from a Christian author! I eagerly await the next book and highly recommend this series!

A great historical, spiritual, entertaining novel

I loved this book. It made me feel so blessed. I could see how hard the early immigrants had it in this country. But they didn't give up because they were strong Christians, and they strongly believed that God would get them through it. I didn't want this book to end. It reminded me daily how I should be acting as far as helping others, controlling my temper, never giving up, being thankful even in very tough times, etc. Reading this book has entertained me while at the same time, helping me to become a better person. I can't wait to buy the next book in this series.

Great Detailed Book

I really enjoyed this book. I did read it in sequence to the first one in the series, and part of the story is somewhat duplicated. However, I did not have a problem with this as I enjoyed the different person perspective. I love the first book and this just rounded out the characters for me. I also appreciated the small daily details of the long journey West. It made that era and the trials and triumphs that the new immigrants experienced when they came to America very real. I am not from the USA, but have spent time in Nebraska and even attended the Swedish Festival in Stromsburg, NE. That experience made me appreciate this novel even more.

Fabulous blessings for my heart!

Vikki Kestell is a deeply spiritual Christian writer who captures the essense of life's lessons we all face in differing ways, and how God works in us through others. The characters are true to life and the reader experiences all the raw emotions they have. Vikki uses minute details I love which take you right into the home and heart. Her use of the first 2 books in the series to give us both the female and male character's biographies the intertwine their lives at the end of each was genious and not something I have encountered before in quite this way. I loved every bit of these books and will find and read every word this author writes! If a book does not grab me within the first chapter I will usually waste no more time on it, but this author has me hooked in a page or less every time. Well worth pursuing!

Faith based

It’s a little slow but I had to finish it to see how it ended. I like reading books about the settlers in the “new” frontier. Faith based, no swearing or sexual content. The author was very descriptive, I could picture the scenery and lifestyle they were living.

Wild Heart on the Prairie

This is really two books in one. DON'T QUIT IF YOU'VE ALREADY READ THE PREVIOUS BOOK. The first half is the same as Land of Dust and Tears which is the story of Karl and Jan Thoreson bringing their families from Norway to America. It is an eye-opening view of what immigrants to this country went through. It continues as they arrive on their land, file the claim and work to prove their claim within the 5 years allotted. It is a time of family togetherness, hard work, fear, danger and tragedy. The last part is the parallel story of A Rose Blooms Twice only told from the perspective of Jan. I really enjoyed it!

Excellent book

This is one of the most heart rending stories about kidnapping young girls & selling them as sex slaves. The best part of the book is the faith of the Christian family & the people plus the runaway girls God puts in their care. Their faithfulness during tragedy & death is inspiring. Vikki Kestell is a great writer with a big heart for God. Thank you for inserting Scripture into your books.

... have just started to read Vikki's books and I love them. I have always been a fan of ...

I have just started to read Vikki's books and I love them. I have always been a fan of the west, her stories relate to my great grandparents who settled the parries much like these books tell, I can hear the stores as a young child . But ,more to the point ,I love her Christian and spiritual input.. For me, today, I relate so well to the scriptures she brings out. Many of the struggles of the heart, mind and soul are the same today. Reading these books bring the scripture more alive and with such meaning. Her stories remind me that talking with God should happen all day every day Thankfulness for the gifts we are given each day and a request for guidance , even in the small things. They are a reminder to be in constant dialogue with the one we Love, Christ our Lord. Good Writing Vikki K. I can't read enough, as I know for me, I need constant reminders each day that He is my best friend .

Great Read

Are you weary of Kindle books with poor grammar and innumerable typos - books that are in dire need of a good editor? Are you tired of predictable stories in which the weak heroine is rescued by the strong man? Then Vikki Kestell is for you --strong men, strong women, and a realistic portrayal of the highs and lows of life on a homestead in the late 19th century. This is a great read. Learning the back story of the Thoresen family, as well as that of the community of Riverbend is intriguing. This story complements A Rose Blooms Twice - just enough cross-over to give a different perspective of life in and around Riverbend, yet a fine narrative in its own right. I only noticed one small discrepancy in the time line between the two books. If you haven't already read A Rose Blooms Twice, you will find Part 2 a little sketchy. The poignant, faith-based story is conveyed by excellent writing: clear, succinct, with beautiful metaphors and vivid descriptions. For example, when Jan asked Rose what had happened to her husband, "as though he had ripped a scab from a mortal wound, her answer bled pain rather than blood." (Ch. 41) The story ends with a hint of what is to come in the rest of the Prairie Heritage Series.

The strength of a family is in their faith and the way they live it.

Another enjoyable addition to a very well written story of the past lives of those who migrated to the new world and their faith. I finish one book and immediately have to have the next in line. You are drawn into these peoples lives with an easy read and the details of what it was like to live in these days.

Awe inspiring

This was a difficult read for me, I cried for half of the book! Life was not easy for the pioneers but amid the hardships was much joy, the blessed Lord saw them through. The detailed writing was terrific.

Just as good as A Rose Blooms Twice

Terrific companion novel for A Rose Blooms Twice -- a book I loved. This novel relates Jan's story of love and loss and explains the man we meet in Rose's novel. I also enjoyed reading Jan and Rose's love story from his point of view. I appreciated the way Jan grew from a brash, outspoken young man into a seasoned, mature man who lived out his faith. Just loved it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book......

WOW and double WOW. I was a little apprehensive when I found out that "Wild Heart on the Prairie" (Book 4) wasn't going to pick up where "The Captive Within" left off but, believe you me - I wasn't disappointed. Jan Thoresen and his brother, Karl, had my attention from page one. Author, Vikki Kestell, has the gift that God gives only a few and that's to tell a story that leaves the reader so engrossed that you even take it to bed with you because you can't find a good spot to stop at.. This is a beautiful story - the prequel to "A Rose Blooms Twice" and it tells of the hardships and heartaches that befall these families as they set out to start and build a life in the land of the plenty and the home of the free. Good reading and great writing by one of my new-found authors. Keep'em coming, Vikki.

Jan's Prospective.

This is book one ( A Rose Blooms Twice) written from Jan's prospective. A good book, well written and it does have new details. I was confused at first how it could be book two when it went back and started before Jan and Rose met but I read some of the reviews, I realized Jan was telling his story. I then settled in and enjoyed it - very much. The only reason I gave it 4stars and not 5 is it did re-tell some from book one. I am moving on to book three.

Clever book!

What a great idea! I thoroughly enjoyed reading about both characters' background and reading the same story from each character's perspective: Jan's in this book and the background of Rose in "A Rose Blooms Twice".

Wild Heart on the Prairie

This novel was a gripping saga of a Norwegian family's immigration to America and homesteading on vast prairies. The characters matured in their faith as they faced many hardships including death, grief, and threats to their survival. I loved the sense of community amid cultural and language differences. The story line had many inspiring layers. Recommended for those who like 1800's Christian fiction.

A Prairie Heritage must

Once opened I could not put this book down. It was well written and the history of early plains settlers was well research. A story of hard working faithful people and their relationships with each other. It was great to read the story from Jan's narrative as primary. Added so much to the first book in the series "A Rose Blooms Twice" to hear the story of the courtship from both viewpoints. A story of faith and a relationship with God.

Great book showing result through faith and work

This book really got me. It is an excellent book with great story....It has really given me an understanding of appreciating every moment of life while it lasts. Big thumbs up to the author of this wonderful book. I appreciated the part where the author open my mind to know that some bad things that comes our way through the journey of life are actually God's plan to expose us to so many good opportunities. It pointed to me that whatever journey you embark on, you should commit it to God before undergoing on it with prayers and to trust in Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledging Him in all our ways and He shall direct our paths. This book has greatly influenced me to always seek God in all my doings perhaps nothing is too difficult for God. The author has revealed a compelling saga of a family that had great faith and courage in God which helped pass forward a legacy to change their world. I strongly recommend this book of FAITH Thumbs up to the author

Jan's Story!

VIkki Kestell does a marvelous job of bringing the past alive! After reading her first book, "A Rose Blooms Twice, she adds the perspective of the Thorensen family's journey and life and loss in River Bend. I am now reading the third book in this series, "Joy On This Mountain." I highly recommend this author.

Great Book

At first I thought this book should have been the first one but as I read on I realized ,Miss Kestell, had written about both Jan Thoreson's and Rose Brownlee's life's before they came together as one. Awesome!! I can't wait to get the next book..

Wild Heart on the Prairie

I loved the book. I don't like when words are not English. I've purchased the entire series. I read the first 3 chapters of Joy on This Mountain. I don't like that Grant died. I will continue reading it and see how it goes. I give Wild Heart on the Prairie 4stars****.

A Moving and Heart reaching book

This is an amazing and inspiring book of family, life, losses and second chances. Like "A Rose Blooms Twice", the first book in this series, it tells of family, love, losses and an amazing journey of faith. I definitely recommend this book.

Well Written!

Enjoyable tale about life on the prairie in early America.

Too repetitive of the prequel and the first book.

Even though I skipped over Part 1(I had already read the prequel) of this book I was bored with Part 2. I found it to be repetitive of A Rose Blooms Twice only more from Jan's view, which you can guess at by reading the 'first' book in the series. I found myself doing more skimming than reading of this book. This hasn't kept me from continuing on in the series though, I have already started the third book, Joy On This Mountain.

Excellent series

I have been reading this series and honestly almost skipped this book because it goes back before the whole series started. I am SO glad I didn't. It turned out to be one of my favorites, if not THE favorite. Read these books in order so you can keep up with the characters and know what is going on, but DO NOT skip this one. It was very good. Historical Christian Fiction is my favorite and this one did not disappoint.

Excellent Book

I love this book. I've read it several times and loved it every time!!

Christian pioneering at it's Best!

Loved this book! Glad it was a series i didn't want it to end! Love to read thes books that are good and wholesome, i can let my 10year old and 14 year old Grandaughters read them and not be afraid of what they are reading!

Vikki Kestell is an amazing writer!

I ordered the entire series of A Prairie Heritage books; they are all fabulous; the stories are well written; the characters great and the stories show us the beauty of hope and faith in God. Thank you Vikki Kestell for bringing your vision to us readers.

A must read for this series!

I read book 2 first and I really enjoyed that sweet and unusual love story - an account of deep loss, pain, courage, strength and building a new life - all from a Christian worldview. It is not often that you read about such rare relationships. But I am pleased that the author wrote this (a great prequel to book 1). The background that book 2 gives in the life of Jan and his family is intense and intriguing and deals with many philosophical, interpersonal and spiritual issues that the settlers faced as they built their homesteads, families and communities from the ground up. This is a great and very moving story of faith in God in spite of the circumstances.

Must Read!

My wife and I almost didn't read it since we figured we already knew what happened since it takes place before the other books in the series. But it really gives you insight into Jan & Rose. And even though we knew what was going to happen with Jan's family, it is so well written that it still made me cry. My wife too. After my wife finished this book, she went back and reread the scenes from 'A Rose Blooms Twice' concurrently with the same scenes in this book. Then I did the same thing. It was really great to see these scenes from both Jan's and Rose's perspective. It really helps you understand why the characters did what they did. You have to read this!

Fabulous Book Series

If you haven't gotten this series, you should get it now. This is the best series. Have loved every one of her books. So many emotions, Wow! I even had to put the book down for a couple of days because the things happening got me so upset. love the characters, the language, Like watching a movie. The things happening way back then are still happening today. So looking forward to her next book in June. What a blessed gift God has given this lady. Thank you, Thank you Vikki . keep blessing us with more good books.

Great series of books

Have very much enjoyed these books.

Great

I read book one for book club and enjoyed it so much i read the entire series.

I enjoyed the origins of the story

I enjoyed the origins of the story, whenever the Thoresens came to Nebraska from Norway and settled the territory there. This was a very Christian family who endured hardship and blessings, never losing their sincere trust in Christ. I recommend this book to any historical Christian book lover.

I love the history in this story and the blatant faith ...

I love the history in this story and the blatant faith the characters practice. I also love the twists and turns the story takes. At times its really a mystery. Love that the books have more than 12-16 chapters. I would highly recommend this author and her work.

Impressive

This is a profoundly spiritual saga. It is well worth the read. Scriptures are laced throughout the story illustrating the faith of the pioneers who settled America. The characters are priceless.

Different perspective, same story.

The same story as A Rose Blooms Twice, but from his perspective. It is good. Since he was an English learner, you get to understand what was going on in his mind during the1st book.

Big disappointment

This book was a big disappointment after reading the first two. It just writes about what you already have read and a small chapter about future books in the series. No story line. Waste of money.

Jan's side of the story

I got the Kindle version. Miss Kestell tells you on the first page that this book is a repeat of A Rose Blooms Twice. But the curious twist she makes is that 2/3rds through the book, you get to know Jan's side of the story. So I bought it because I was intrigued. I love the series so far and will buy the next books soon.

It is the best I've ever read

Everyone should read this series. It is the best I've ever read!

What a wonderful story of courage

What a wonderful story of courage, Christian living and love. The details of the journey and perils of entering this country to establishing a homestead in the midwest are eyeopening. One wonders how any of these courageous people endured all that happened to them even with God's help. The ending caused me to go back and read the ending of "Rose Blooms Twice." Both were a joy to visit again. I would highly recommend this book as a stand alone volume, but the whole series is worth reading both from the story lines and for the Christian inspiration it gives.

Confusing & hoping to have someone answer this for me

Like some of the other readers, I had read some Snellings books about the same type of individuals and was disappointed that the two are so much alike. Did the authors collaborate? If so it certainly doesn't cause readers to trust them for future reading.

Five Stars

This whole series is a great read. Have enjoyed them very much. Looking forward to reading the others.

Great Series, Same Story

I'm giving this book five stars, because this series is wonderfully written, and I have really enjoyed the author's books so far. However, I am disappointed because this book is just a re-telling (from a different point of view) of the prequel to the story.

Great

Great

Great inspirational fiction.

After finishing book three, I eagerly started this book. At first I didn't know if I would like going back and filling in some previous history. I was happy to see things in Jan's life from his view. I so thoroughly have enjoyed these first four books and eagerly await book five.

Wild Heart is an excellent book to read

Wild Heart is an excellent book to read. It descibes the struggles of a Christian family that migrates to the United States. I also enjoyed the scriptures that are embedded throughout the story.

good clean reading romance

Good clean reading romance. Wonderful depiction of life on the prairie. The trials, the joys, and the frustrations.

Good reads

Another wonderful story and on to the next in the series I go. Thank you for all I am learning.

Loved it. Hard to put down

I loved this in depth look into the lives before, during and after immigration. The characters were well-developed and realistic. The plot draws you in straight away

A beautiful story of life on the prairie in the days of homesteading.

This book and author have me hooked. I have a keen desire to meet the hero. The author does such a great job of characterization, bringing everyone to life, the reader forgets they aren't relatives.

I love

I keep thinking they will go sour on me but just the opposite, I love them

I liked the Thoreson families but I felt as if their ...

Be warned that the first part of this book was previously published as a free book called "Land of Dust and Tears". This seems to be written as a young adult book (based on style and vocabulary) but it seems very long for a young adult book. I liked the Thoreson families but I felt as if their spiritual struggles were repeated without any change. (For example, in the case of the brothers struggling with Karl wanting to take the elder brother role and order the others about, the brothers talk about this several times, but I never see Karl change or a change in how the problem comes about in the plot.) I'm not saying that repeated struggles with problems aren't realistic, just that when I read fiction, I'd like to see some evidence of the character trying to rein this tendency in--perhaps he could get overconfident that he's got it handled, then do it again or have it pop up at a time when he feels stressed or anxious about his farm or his family. I am not sure I'll go on reading this series.

Norwegians in America...settling this new land.

Fascinating story of pioneers from Norway settling in America where land was free if homesteaded and worked for 5 years. Their feelings and reactions on experiencing a tornado that had previously not heard of or seen. The difficulties and the delights of settling in their adopted land. A wonderful work.

Wild Heart on the Prairie

Enjoyed the continuation of this family saga. From the first story of this series you are pulled into the family and its trials and celebrations. Great story of families who settled the West.

A Prairie Heritage.

I enjoyed this book so very much! This author knows how to write a great book.

ok - but not as good as the other books in the series.

Good; but not as good or interesting as the other books in this series. Sort of a disapointment for me.

Such a gentle heart..

always nice when they show the person as 'eye candy'. Loved his demeanor & character throughout the book.

Delightful continuation of Prairie series

This is a wonderful continuation of this enjoyable series. Every chapter is a delight to read. The characters are loveable and so is the story.

Five Stars

Well written. Will read more of her books.

Good read

Good book. Cannot wait to see what happens with Jan and Rose in other books in the series. Did I say good book? Hahaha! Why is there a minimum number of words in rudderless? This is asinine!

Wild Heart on the Prairie

Thank God for good books! I would recommend reading this series by all. Keep up the good work, Vikki Kestell.

Inspirational

I usually have a hard time getting into books (and I love to read)... But with this series, so far, the first 3 books have captured my attention and I can't seem to put it down. I love that Vikki has written about situations that happen in real life and apply it to her characters, it makes me realize that even tho her books are fiction, that I am not alone in my struggles. I would recommend it to anyone!

Wonderful uplifting read. A JOY!

Such a JOY !!! to "get lost" in this read. Well worth the time an such a suspense filled story. I can hardly wait for book 3

Good reading, hard to put down.

A duplicate book

I love this series so much but was so not happy to find that well over 50% of this book [more like 70% I believe] is a book that I had already read. The rest of the book is also very much similar to another book as well except that it is written from another characters view. I just hope that no other books are duplicates ... I want to finish the series because I do love it but just don't want to waste my money on buying another one that I had already read. Very disappointing for author to do it this way.

Should not be a stand alone book

This is almost the same as the "the rose blooms twice" but the side of Jan. I don't think it should have been a separate book, it can be included on the first book.

Like a southerner, the drawl is slow starting but eventually get's the word out!

this book was a slow starter but gradually picked up and became a pretty good read. I wasn't compelled to read the third in the series.

this was absolutely excellent! clean

this was absolutely excellent! clean. NO FOUL LANGUAGE, amazing, so she CAN write without cursing. wonders will never cease.

Hi, y'all, I started with this one and couldn't stop! If you are a believer, you will be thrilled with Vikki's boldness to proclaim the accurate gospel I guess that's the first diamond which caught my eye, but the book and all that are in the series (Yeah, couldn't resist them and they are all flawlessly written) will catch your attention and not let it go. Imagine my delight when I ran into another of Vikki's book a day or so ago in an anthology which I had gotten on Kindle sometime ago. I just finished that one - the first book in the Nanostealth series. Talk about an imagination! Wow! I have just purchased the other three books, having finished the first one and being anxious to get into the others. Thank you, Vikki!! Nisses Mom

A beautiful story of settling the prairie

Brothers Jan and Karl Thoreson and their families have arrived in New York. Immigrants from Norway, they are headed to the Nebraska Territory and their intended claim of 160 acres each as part of the U.S. land-grant program. It is 1866; the American Civil War is over and the brothers, with no prospects in their home country to become farmers, are looking to create a new life. They are more fortunate than most immigrants: they come with solid middle-class resources and they have done their homework on what to expect, both when they land and when they travel and arrive in Nebraska. But no amount of research can prepare them for the joy of owning their own land and for the hardship and heartbreak that will come from life in a new world – the storms, the locusts, the backbreaking work of busting sod, disease, and even death. They and their families will experience it all, their lives held together by their deep faith in God. “Wild Heart on the Prairie” by Vikki Kestell tells the story of the Thoreson families as they carve out a new life on the former prairies of Nebraska. It also tells the story of what immigrants experienced as they arrived and traveled to their final destinations; how small-town life (and neighbors) helped sustain existence; how people built their farms, communities, and churches; and how they endured great personal tragedies. First published in 2014, it is a historical novel that falls in the “faith-filled, inspirational” genre. It is such a good read that I had difficulty putting it down, so I didn’t; I read it straight through in far less than a day. “Wild Heart on the Prairie” is the second of eight books in “A Prairie Heritage” series. Before beginning her writing career, Kestell worked in government, academia, and corporate arenas, holding a Ph.D. degree in Organizational Learning and Instruction. She has also written four books in the “Nanostealth” series, three in “Girls from the Mountain” series, and several in the “Laynie Portland Spy” series, as well as a Bible study entitled “Growing Up in God.” To learn in a fictional way about how immigrants settled the American Midwest, and how they survived all that life (and nature) threw at them, read “Wild Heart on the Prairie.” It is a moving book that often evokes tears while it tells a beautiful story.

I loved the well written stories and the well developed characters, and their faith in times of adversity

Wild Heart on the Prairie ( A Prairie Heritage Book 2) by Vikki Kestell This series follows author's previous "Land of Dust and Tears series, which is the early history of the Thoresen brothers Jan and Karl, wives and children's coming to America. Some of this history is retold in the first few books of this, the Prairie Heritage series. I really enjoyed all the books in A Prairie Heritage Series . The societal issues of sex trafficking is a major issue of our day and I know there are people of unfailing faith and courage in the face of such evil that will/are providing aid and protect the innocents and help to deliver them to safety. I have heard many modern-day stories of such rescues and the lives of the victims that have been freed from that lifestyle. This series and the characters are inspiring in doing just that and the victims, and the future generations have been given a rich heritage in Jesus. The author/Amazon have many of these e-books free to "kindle unlimited" subscribers. All God's Promises, Book 7 ( A Prairie Heritage series) is due out Spring 2016 according to author's release in Book 6.

Parts Similar to Book One--Told from Jan's Point of View

I enjoyed everything about this book, except I wish I had read it before the first one--A Rose Blooms Twice. While reading this book, I already knew what was going to happen, since I had read the "first book." So I found myself skipping quickly through parts of it, even though this book was told through Jan's eyes. Jan was an excellent character, and I was in tears reading about his extended family and his first wife. This book grips your heart. The struggles of early prairie life came alive. The Scripture passages in this book were fantastic, and never "preachy." I personally recommend reading this before the official book one.

There are some funny parts as Jan who does not speak English well ...

I started reading this series by Vikki Kestell with the Prequel (Land of Dust and Tears) and then read Book 1. The prequel describes the experiences of the Thorensen family as they emigrate to America. It was a tender, interesting story. The second book (Book 1) A Rose Blooms Twice was equally tender and interesting, with a romance between Jan Thorensen and Rose Brownless, both of whom had lost their spouses. There are some funny parts as Jan who does not speak English well debates how to talk to Rose about his growing love for her. This book, Wild Heart on the Prairie actually retold the love story of Jan and Rose from Jan's perspective. It was something I have never seen done before and it was very well done. Interesting, humorous and loving it gave me a glimpse of Jan's feelings during the time they were beginning to know one another and falling in love. Book 1 gave the story from Rose's point of view. I am really enjoying this series. I am reading the third book at this time (actually the fourth when you count the prequel). The Christian aspects of these stories are woven into the fabric of the stories in such a way as to make sense in the advancement of the plot. I haven't read Vikki Kestell's books before, but she is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. The stories aren't predictable, they each have an unexpected twist or two in them. I think if you like Christian and/or historical romace you would really enjoy this series. I recommend you begin with the prequel so you can get to know and understand the Thorensen family.

Serious and moving reading

I don't want to add too many things that would be spoilers or misleading, though I would add haunting (an amazing/inspiring not a scary type). I don't know how some authors write trite fluff and some write realistically. This is a serious book with serious topics. I do not recommend this book if you are easily triggered about a few things, though they are handled well in the story. This is written like it really happened, more real that any other author I have read before. The characters themselves are not necessarily wonderful, they are good... very authentic... very human with wonderful attributes. It is hard for average humans to attain "wonderful" with sin nature.. This is a book that leaves you with a lot to think about....in a haunting way. I read this before the one that comes before it, as a standalone.

bad it wasn't clear that this is just another title ...

Actually this book is only a repeat, word for word, of the "prequel" to the whole series of "A Prairie Heritage Series". Why it's listed as the 2nd book is a mystery. I returned the book. Too, bad it wasn't clear that this is just another title for the prequel "Land of Dust and Tears". And too bad I spent the money for it. I did read "A Rose Blooms Twice" which is supposedly Book #1, and it was very interesting and good, I am now reading "Joy On This Mountain", and so far, it's okay, and whatever the outcome of this book will decide whether I continue with this series. It's iffy at best, right now.

It was so great to get the perspective from the Norwegian side of ...

It was so great to get the perspective from the Norwegian side of this story. Loved the romance and how the Lord dealt with healing of grief the characters have suffered with new found hope and love. I love all the books in the series and feel so hopeful and encouraged when I have finished them. Can't wait to start the next one!

Unforgettable

I was enveloped in the characters and their story. I read the books of this series in the order intended, but if you just discovered this book it would not mess up the stories of the book before. I cried, I laughed, I didn't want the story to end. Really there were two stories told in this book. The beginnings of the family coming to America and their struggles making the homesteads theirs, and then the story A Rose Blooms Twist only written as Jan' s perspective. Love this whole series and highly recommend to anyone wanting substance not fluff in their book choices.

Faith provoking reading

Has a style of writing that draws you one the story. Characters experience real life trails of christian living. The story is so well written as to hold you spellbound reading on. No rabbit trails leading away from the story. No fluff going into what they were wearing or what they were cooking but sticking with the story their feelings, trials and challenges.

Hear Jon's Story

Jon's background story was wonderful and how it coincided with Rose's in the 1st book was very interesting. I really love the series and have already finished Joy on the Mountain, the next one. I'm on the 4th one now. Love the author's insights, the history of that era and the changes made one person at a time and the ripple effect. Great Christian historical fiction without being preachy.

Good read

This book was really good, but even though I read the author's instructions on what to read and when, it confused me that the book was the same as Land of Dust and Tears plus Jan's perspective of Rose 's story. Nothing more. I think if I would've understood that, I might have skipped it and moved on to the next book. But I enjoyed reading Jan's perspective, as short as it was, so I guess I'm glad I read it. On to the next book!

Another great read!

Really enjoyed this book. My grandparents were immigrants just after the turn of the century so I find the era very interesting. The strong kept me so captivated, hard to put down!

This was a good book the second of a series from the man

This was a good book the second of a series from the man,s viewpoint. From the time of him coming to America, to the death of his wife and daughter, to meeting Rose the woman in the first book to the birth of his daughter and how faith of God kept him strong

I LOVED the first book

I search for books about the old west and pioneer days, so was excited to find another series to read: Prairie Heritage. I LOVED the first book. Also loved the 2nd. book, which is actually a prequel to the first. I loved it though because it was about Norwegian immigrants to the US, and I have read all the books about them that another wonderful Christian writer wrote. What happened to this series about the PRAIRIE? It turned into horror/violence/kidnapping. I would have deleted my Kindle books and not read any after #3, except that I only wanted to keep up with Joy and Rose, although there was way too much violence. I wanted to read nice stories like the first 2 books. Why did it jump from Rose telling Jan she was expecting a baby to 26 years later? I would love to read what happened in-between.

Excellent story. The author did her homework researching pioneer ...

Excellent story. The author did her homework researching pioneer life. Written from Jan's perspective and his story, it explained so much of why he was the way he was when he met Rose Brunlee in A Rose Blooms Twice. An awesome human interest story including wonderful principles for how real people who are Christ - followers deal with real life and tragedy.

I loved this book from the start

I loved this book from the start. Learning how this family immigrated to the US in the 1800's and the stories or survival, heart break and faith were truly inspiring.

Love it from the mans point of view

This book was a good story about coming to America in the old days. I also enjoy reading about the love of God. The best part of the book was seeing the younger side of Jan and reading his thoughts.

A Duplicate!

I can't understand why this is labeled Book 2. I read the prequel, then when I went to the main story I found it was an exact duplicate of Book I, A Rose Blooms Twice. I already read Book 1, & the sad thing is I wasted my monthly rental on this duplicate. Not happy about this!

A must read......

Our nations history is chronicled here in the lives of early settlers who brought their courage and grit as well as a strong understanding of who they belonged to. I recommend you start with this book and hold on to your pants cause the ride gets wild......and like 'Back to the Future', this needs to be made into a film series. You better get all the books otherwise you'll be scrambling to find out what happens.

Disappointed in the Writer

Shame on you for duping your readers into purchasing a duplicate of pervious books in the series. Not only that you recommend the order in which to read your series, which I might add was a little confusing and now I know why. It's too bad you did that, it leaves a bad feeling toward your honesty as a Christian writer. That said, I will admit that I have enjoyed the series thus far and plan as a Christian to give you a chance to redeem yourself.

Jan's heart is so kind

I loved reading Jan's story, and especially being privy to his inner dialogue, as none of that is present in Rose. No spoilers... this is another "Can't put down" read, and a MUST, right after A Rose Blooms Twice, or even the whole series. Just for goodness sake, don't read it FIRST. :-)

Great Christian story

Great Christian story . . . I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by Ms. Kestell.
