Who Was Theodore Roosevelt?

Great book for kids to learn a little history. We are working on our sons reading skills and allow him to read a funny book and we drop in a historical book like this so he not only is working on reading skills but actually learning something about a person or event that was historic. This normally leads into questions on the event and we can do some additional research after.

This was such a wonderful book for my 8 year old to read!! I even enjoyed listening to him read!! He is right at a 3rd grade reading level and it wasnt too hard but it challenged him.

kids loved reading this! Was for a school assignment for my 4th grade, my 3rd grader read and loved as well. Will be getting more of the series.

Bought for my daughters book report for 3rd grade. She enjoyed reading it, decent amount of pictures to keep her intrigued. She got a 99 on the report, so can't complain.

My 3 year old loves Teddy and this was very informative without being over his head.

I love these biographies for my fifth grade classes. They are written in a way that is entertaining, which can be tough with the biography genre. This book begins by explaining the incident where Roosevelt was shot while giving a speech, but kept right on talking. My fifth graders were interested right away since the beginning was so catchy! All I had to do was read them the beginning, and then many students wanted to borrow it. Since then I've had more and more students want to borrow different "Who Was" books I have in my classroom library. The illustrations give it just enough interest to keep them reading. I also liked how there were different features like timelines, etc. that help me to teach them text features. This is a great book for a fifth grader, or any student in an upper elementary or middle school grade.

We read the entire book in one sitting. My seven-year-olds wanted to learn every detail about their favorite president. This was a win!

Got this for my daughter and she absolutely loved it. Was easy to follow and kept her interested to the last page.

My son loves this book. I think he has gone back and read it about ten times now. All of the books in this series are great, especially since they are written with kids in mind, and not Common Core :-)

Great resource for my son's fifth grade book report. Valuable information was presented on various aspects of President Roosevelt's life with lively illustrations that kept my son engaged in learning. I learned a lot too!

He is my favorite president, he did so much for the country before, during and after his presidency. This book is a great introduction to Teddy.

SMALL BOOK, BIG INFORMATION. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN

Great addition to my collection

This is a good book because it uses more than one point of view. It was fabulous in many ways. My 5th grade spon learned a lot for his President report.

A biography of Theodore Roosevelt for middle grades. I just read Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt by Jean Fritz and wondered how this compared. It turns out the two complement each other quite well. They both cover several things the other missed. This one focuses more on Roosevelt's family life and political highlights. The other one gives more details about his life out West, the tricky spots of his political career, and adventures in war and abroad. So it turns out, if you read both you get a fuller picture of the man and some behind the scenes things about different highlights. Of course, both cover all the biggest events in Roosevelt's career but they do so from different angles. This one is more cut and dry in style, the other is more emotive. They are both about the same length and illustrated. I really can't say which one is a better biography because I think they are pretty equal but better when you read them together. Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. The attempt on Roosevelt's life is related and just some bleeding mentioned. Roosevelt's part in the Spanish-American War is very briefly related, with very few gory details. Deaths and injuries of Roosevelt's sons in WWI are also mentioned, but not gory.

Who Was Theodore Roosevelt ? by Michael Burgan, illustrated by Jerry Hoare. This book to me has a few key points that you need to know before you read about Theodore Roosevelt. The first key point is that he was very interested in politics, and in 1912 he joined other Republicans to form their own party. It became known as the Bull Moose Party. The second point is that Theodore was the first President to fly an airplane. The third point is that he was an amazing and headstrong leader of the United States of America. The main theme of this book was to tell about Theodore Roosevelt’s whole life. The first point I mention is about Theodore Roosevelt and how he was the first President to fly an airplane. Also eight years earlier he was the first President to ride in a car. It also shows how Theodore Roosevelt was very adventurous. The second point is he created his own party called the Bull Moose Party. In 1908 Roosevelt had to retire from being President because his term was up. He could run again but he decided not to. So Roosevelt supported a man named William Howard Taft for President. In 1912 Roosevelt changed his mind about Taft, so Roosevelt decided to actually run for President again. Then while Roosevelt was campaigning, he joined with other Republicans to form is own party. The party later was known as the Bull Moose Party. Then on October 14 something happened to Roosevelt, you will have to read the book to find out more. Now for my third point,Theodore Roosevelt was a strong and determined President. The first way he was a strong determined president is he fought in a war and he stood up for what he believed in, even if other people didn’t agree. He was also the kind of President that always had time to be with his family and had a soft spot for nature. In 1903, he went to Yellowstone on a camping trip,and said on that day,”we are not building this country of ours for a day. It is to last through ages”. In conclusion, Theodore Roosevelt was an amazing, outgoing, determined, strong President. The genre of this book is a historical non-fiction. The reason I like Michael Burgan’s writing style is because it is very detailed about Theodore's life, which some children may not know about. Michael takes 1 to 2 pages to explain and give background information on the subject. Michael’s writing gives you a great sense of where everything is happening. And his voice in this book is very detailed. In my opinion this book is amazing. It is good for children that want to learn or read about Theodore Roosevelt. To quote Theodore Roosevelt,”A simple wound couldn’t stop a Bull Moose.”

I think that "Who Was Theodore Roosevelt" was a great book because it included a lot of important information. I liked it because it had a lot of years and dates so that the reader would know when things are happening. I also liked how at the end it ended with how people remember him.

The series is well written and illustrated. It held his attention well.
