What's left of Machu Picchu stands as the most significant link to the marvelous Inca civilization of Peru. Now readers can explore these ruins in this compelling Where Is? title. Built in the fifteenth century and tucked away in the mountains of Peru, Machu Picchu was abandoned after the Spaniards conquered the Incan empire in the sixteenth century. It remained hidden until 1911 when Hiram Bingham uncovered the marvelous complex and shared his discovery with the world. Today, hundreds of thousands of people visit the site to climb the 3,000 stone steps, explore the towering monuments, and see the numerous species that call these famous ruins home.

A fascinating tale not just of "long ago and far away," but available to new generations as well. Start saving your pennies!

Some might say I've accumulated far too many decades of life to read any of the books in this Grossett and Dunlap series, now numbering well over 150 titles (I know, because I copied and pasted the cover images of ALL of them so m granddaughter could choose the ones she still wants.) I like to at least scan books which I've ordered for my grandchildren, and often leave very small post-it notes with comments as I read. I learned a great deal from this book; I think it's one of the best in the series. Far from being dry history, the tale is exciting, has elements of a detective story, and provokes one's fascinations with things long past and perhaps forever beyond real explanation or understanding. A most enjoyable and informative read.

A lot of interesting info!

We read this book on the Peru Rail on our way to Machu Picchu! My daughter loved it so much. So many cool and fun facts about Machu Picchu!

Great Stocking Stuffer for young readers

My kids love these books! Easy AR books & they are learning about the world! Definitely recommend for teacher gifts or for birthday/stocking stuffers!

Educational and fun read

The book was very interesting to my 8 year old son. He read it fairly quickly. He started it at night and woke up early to finish it the next day. He eagerly shared what he learned and was even talking about Machu Picchu weeks after he read the book.
