Whatever, God: Rediscovering the One I Thought I Knew

Don’t judge this book by its title… it’s not what you’d expect. The chapter headings might come off as trite but without an ounce of exaggeration or hesitation I can say that this book is so much more than its table of contents. “Whatever, God” hits home. It strikes a lot of chords and it strikes them hard. The beauty of Fr. Anthony’s writing style is how he is able to give so much life and context to seemingly common, “heard that a million times”, Christian notions that would otherwise remain ignored. Because of that, the book reads more like a primer on the power of orthodox thought, soaked through with more humor than you thought a man of the cloth could muster, than a Sunday School class made into a paperback. From what he writes and the stories he tells, it’s abundantly clear that Fr. Anthony is not the type to have his head in the ground, ignorant of the reality of the world around him, nor is he the kind of pie-in-the-sky, un-relatable, ivory-tower academics/theologians who analyze the world from afar without ever really living in it. Fr. Anthony has been a priest for nearly two decades and all those years of rolling up sleeves, getting involved in the mess of the world and everyone in it, shows. His message lies perfectly at the nexus of theological truth and non-sugar-coated reality – it’s where dogma hits the dirt and believers start walking the walk. At its core, this book is written by an unflinching realist (it’s not a self-help book, or a feel-good Christian story). It’s full of real stories, real questions, and real struggles. And the mark of that reality lies in the weight of the questions the book poses: For better or for worse, how closely does my image of God match the image I have of my parents? How much of what I think I know of God stems from extrapolations of my own behavior? If He’s all-powerful, then why all the tragedies and suffering? Is He unable or simply unwilling? Who gets to define what “good” is? Is God more like a miserly welfare office or a wealthy and gracious Father? What happens when I “push the ‘pray’ button and nothing happens”? Am I blaming God in the “right” way? I would recommend this book for the questions it asks alone. Now, is this book going to answer every question you’ve ever had about God, whether theological, philosophical, or personal? ... No. But that’s through no fault of its own. No book really can. Good answers require good questions and good questions, in turn, require good paradigms. That’s where this book shines because it has good paradigms in spades! Timeless truths phrased in ways that break them out of the monotony that lead us to ignore their relevance and the impact they can have on our lives. Fr. Anthony helps makes things real in this book, and in so doing, he succeeds in bringing an ancient faith to a modern world and he does it all with a joke on every page. What’s not to love?

I love this book, there isn't enough good things to say about it. Honestly life changing if you're debating whether or not to buy it, do it. I was a little turned off by the price but I would pay much more know after listening/reading it. I got my whole family now listening to it and recommended it to friends we ordered it while we were speaking. I also suggested it as a graduation gift for high schoolers because this book is crucial at that age. Thank you Father Anthony for this book. If you don't know who Father Anthony is, this book is a great place to start. After finishing this book I started listening to his sermons on the way to school and work and he has me laughing out loud and nodding my head throughout the drive. He's said it before but his calling is truly bringing an "ancient religion to a modern world" and he does it amazingly, may God bless him. Highly recommend!!

Whatever, God by Fr. Anthony Messeh is the perfect book to bring in the New Year. Fr. Anthony makes a case for fully surrendering our lives to God so that we can experience His goodness, graciousness, and relevance. He uses personal and accessible examples to help readers understand how God can work if we are willing to cooperate with Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us. Written in his trademark conversational style, readers will feel like Fr. Anthony is speaking to them personally. Some of his examples and illustrations are ones I will go back to. One of my favorite quotes explains the Biblical story of the feeding of the five thousand with five loaves and two fish: “God doesn’t want us to limit ourselves to only what we have in our hands, but He also doesn’t want us to neglect what we have in our hands. He wants us to OFFER what we have into His Hands.” I have also reviewed this book on my blog, beingincommunity dot com.

On its surface, this book accomplishes the task of delivering Fr. Anthony's spiritual insights to the reader, but on another level, this book tells a relatable story of transformation. Speaking to a generation of privileged, suburban, middle class, millennials (or close to it) like himself, Fr. Anthony says: "you too can let God transform you." I recommend this book to anyone looking for a reason to let God into their eleven-hour work day, their german cars, their cubicle at the IT consulting firm, and their twenty one hundred dollar one-bedroom luxury apartment in Arlington, VA. Once in there, God can work miracles, however, the first step is to want Him inside, and Fr. Anthony's story shows what can happen if you do.

This book changed my life - and I mean that literally - not just as a way to compliment the content and the author:) I had the opportunity to hear and meet Fr. Anthony Messeh at his church before reading the book, which was amazing because then I could really hear his voice in this book while reading. It’s truly so powerful, loving, moving, and makes God so relatable as a Father and not a distant God. I haven’t been the same since. Thankful for God’s Word, love and this amazing book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

I love Fr. Anthony's podcasts, videos and blogs so I felt it natural to read his book, especially as I continue my own journey to seek God. I felt the first half felt conversational, and it consisted of Fr.Anthony's own journey. I could relate less to the first part. I felt the second part was where the gem lay. I really loved the second part of the book. I think it read easier than the first half, though the content could be difficult. But such is Orthodox Christianity--difficult yet simple. Beautiful. I think my only qualm with the first half was the writing style, but it very well could just have been written as Father would say it. Either way, this was a beautiful, worthwhile read. Check it out.

Not your typical "Christian" book! If you want to understand God better, this book can help. As I read this book I laughed, I cried, and I laughed some more. In this book, Father Anthony sheds light on the depth and implications of God's love for us. He shatters through many misconceptions of God-- and he does so in very relatable ways. Oh-- and the author even GIVES away the ancient, secret formula for success (5+2=5000). I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will be recommending this to all of my friends.

Excellent book. I have been listening to Fr. Messeh's sermons for years and I have learned so much. This book does contain some material from his talks however the section about the Holy Spirit was completely new and life changing.

I’ve always been a fan of fr. Anthony’s sermons, and this book did not disappoint. It is written exactly how he speaks and what I like the most about it is how honest he is in it. He shares his personal story with God for our benefit, not holding back points that may be embarrassing or what not. The book is very easy and pleasant to read— definitely a page-turner! He balances his message with humor in a perfect way. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get to know God or deepen their relationship with Him!

This book is the 101 class on living a Christian life. First you have to learn who God before you can be willing follow Him. The book is filled with practical advice on how to go about building or improving your relationship with God. If you’re familiar with Fr. Anthony’s sermons or blogs, this book is more of that.

Father Anthony has provides his readers with a refreshing take on Christianity. Beyond the typical "call to faith" that most Christian literature presents Whatever, God presents a faith based life with boldness and unusual reliability. For anyone who's seeking a push to restart your walk with Christ, this book is surely a good fit!

If you don't usually read "Christian" books. Try this one. Fr. Anthony is a gifted communicator. His writing is honest, funny and inspiring. In this book, he's able to share his personal experience with God and guide us to encounter God for ourselves. Wonderful book!

I love that this book depicts God at simple but relatable ways with great analogies. This book makes the reader realize that God is always by your side and is ready to comfort you during your walk through life. Father Anthony shows the reader in an eloquent way that even though in your mind you may be going through a tough time, God is actually using it to make your life more rewarding.

This is a great book to clear some misconceptions we have about God and who He is. It is relatable and relevant to our daily lives and the people we ultimately become. Highly recommend reading it!

Great collection of bible stories. Definetly spot on for the 4-7 age group. A good transition from baby bible books. My alomst 5yr old picks this book first every night. The story is told from the perspective of the main character and the last page has a recap of the story and a blub on how to relate to your child

Awesome book!

I had a personal goal to read 10 books this year... well, number 9 is done! I requested and received an advance copy of "Whatever, God" by Fr. Anthony, which releases tomorrow, and in exchange I promised an honest review. If you aren't going to read this entire review, that is ok... here is what you need to know... once loaded onto my Kindle, the Kindle predicted it would take eight hours of reading at my standard pace to finish... I finished it in six. The book, which spans about 200 pages, is a straight-forward and sometimes repetitive guide to understanding three concepts: God is Real, God is Relevant, and God is Rewarding. The repetition is important however as each chapter truly builds a new topic upon the foundation of the previous chapter or several chapters. I will not go into too much detail but in my opinion chapter eight, defining "good", was the best chapter in the book and the most thought provoking. I have known and heard hundreds [actually, thousands] of Fr. Anthony's sermons and lectures over the years but this book was NOT those sermons. This is truly a fresh perspective, with personal insights into Fr. Anthony's life that he shares in a way that only Fr. Anthony could (or would)!! At times you will find yourself highlighting and bookmarking (I bookmarked 37 pages myself for future reference) and at other times you will want to stop, reset, maybe say a prayer, and then continue reading. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone searching for a place to start a relationship with God, fix a relationship with God, or reset their understanding of what a relationship with Him is really all about.

It’s rare that you find a book that combines practical spirituality, heartwarming anecdotes, humor, and clear meaning. Father Anthony is a respected speaker and mentor who over the years convinced many (myself included) that life with God can be fulfilling while being fun and exciting. Finally, we have a book that captures some of his thoughts on paper. Using a mixture of personal storytelling, straightforward explanations of Biblical passages and a fresh look at what God is really like- this book is a unique one that gets better with each reading. It’s a fun, easy read that’s not trying to use lofty language to convince you to feel guilty about your messed-up lives. In fact, quite the opposite. This book shows us how much God loves us and how real and relevant He is to each one of our lives. I’ll definitely be re-reading this book again and gifting it to my friends and colleagues.

I was captivated by how simple this book was to read & yet how powerful & profoundly insightful this book was at the same time. As soon as I got it I couldn't stop reading. Father Anthony has a way of putting an interesting twist & using clever analogies with humor to boot. This book hit a home run for me. Father Anthony seems like a priest one can relate to & does not use pretenses and lots of verbiage. He shares his personal story with authenticity & comes across as very down to earth. He encouraged me to step outside the box from some mainstream ideas while still keeping tradition. I'm not Coptic Orthodox (I'm Baptist) but absolutely feel this book is universally applicable & helpful no matter what your faith is. He wants to show us how to have a deep & close personal relationship with God (not just going through the motions). Father Anthony reminds us that God is never too far, there is always hope & a personal relationship with God is a joyful one. I hope one day I can be as passionate & all-in as him.

After having enjoyed many of Fr. Anthony's sermons, and lectures (unfortunately from afar), I had great expectations for this book. I am so happy to report that it was as engaging, accessible, and deeply spiritually rich as many of Fr. Anthony's materials are. The book provides a context and a framework for essential theological questions, in an intimate and throughly accessible approach. A beneficial read for spiritual individuals, Orthodox, Christian and not alike from many different backgrounds and paths. After reading through the book, much quicker than I expected, I found myself highlighting and bookmarking phrases and questions to later inform my prayer and my practice. In only a way Father Anthony can do, the pragmatism of a daily lived theology is delivered without stripping the beauty and the intricacy of God's Word and teachings. A must read for anyone that has felt despair, or complacent, or seeking invigoration in their faith, their life and their relationship with God can find uniquely personal messages in this text. And yet don't let me downplay the humor and the joy and the intimacy with which this book allows for laughter and a quiet smile. Highly highly recommend! I plan on referencing this myself, as I already have in the past week, and am happy to have found a beautiful gift sending out as gifts as we enter this holiday season.

Is it a good book? Absolutely. Will it change my life? Well that depends... If you are a Christian, or someone who knows of some of Christianity’s practices, or someone who has had no contact with Christianity whatsoever, this book, Whatever, God, will speak to you regardless. Being a Coptic Orthodox Christian, Father Anthony’s book has touched on many issues I have with my own faith; concerning my perception of God and understanding why sometimes bad things happen. Father Anthony has infused the book with the very essence of his sermons: the humour, the practicality and his knowledge (if you have never listened to one of his sermons, you are greatly missing out!). As I was reading, I can hear the words being spoken in Father Anthony’s distinct voice and presentation style. I have read through ¾ of the book as of yet, and it is very difficult to put it down, truly a page turner. From Father Anthony’s recount of his life, to the discussion of certain aspects of spirituality to the beautifully narrated examples from the bible, his book has brought new light to spirituality and Christianity that I thought I already knew. While reading some of the obstacles we face when trying to strengthen our relationship with God, it seemed that the pages were made of mirrors, because in many of the discussions, I saw myself. I saw the struggles I’ve faced, and face, when trying to connect with the Ultimate Creator. I instantly felt connected, thinking, “I’m not the only one who feels this way”, which is SO reassuring. Rather, Father Anthony ENCOURAGES us to think and to read more into the bible and to have a dialogue with God through prayer! (He even encourages us to take it a step further, but I’ll leave that chapter a surprise). I look forward to finishing the book, even rereading it on those nights I need a pick me up. It is a delightful, refreshing, comforting, fun, informative and easy read that I pray and wish will touch your life, just as it has with mine.

I'm half way through the book and I'm loving the insights, practical advice and real life examples. Fr. Anthony makes a real relationship with God seem possible and necessary, while acknowledging the difficulties we face in this fast paced society. I Love his ministry and this book is so much of his knowledge rolled into a fast paced, witty read. You can get through the book quickly and its format allows you to find nuggets of wisdom to re read and meditate on after you've gone all the way through.

It is one of the greatest books I’ve read this year. It is very personal, intuitive and very relatable with an added dose of the usual Fr. Anthony sense of humor. It is engaging and hard to put down once you start reading. Most of us think we have God figured out; we’ve put Him in a box where we only look for Him in our time of need. But the problem is that’s not who God is. As Fr.Anthony put it, God (Father,Son and Holy Spirit) is REAL, RELEVANT and REWARDING. A life spent knowing Him is far better than a life spent without Him, for “God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”. Fr. Anthony goes on to show how knowing God and accepting His will has helped him live the abundant life that Christ promised and we can also do likewise. This book has led me like the star that led the three wise men to Christ. I hope God will use this book to reach and bless as many people as it has blessed me.

Anthony is great at giving spiritual knowledge laced with real life examples and prompts so that we can take our faith and live it in everyday life. I am struggling right now to really understand what God wants from me in my life and this book has helped me a lot with that. Fr. Anthony gives personal and Biblical examples of how God talks to us and guides us through life. He also gives encouragement for those times when God hasn't responded to us, yet, and how to patiently wait on the Lord. I love that this book is deeply spiritual and practical and very accessible. Sometimes, when I read religious books, I get overwhelmed as a lot of it goes over my head. Fr. Anthony does a great job of giving simple, practical, and explicit ways to allow God into your life to fill your heart and guide you. Excellent book, highly recommended.

I’ve been a member of Fr. Anthony’s congregation since the beginning and have enjoyed his sermons and lectures over the years. In all honestly his words have impacted my life in many ways and this book is no different. I couldn’t help but smile because I could hear his voice in my head narrarating while I reading. In truth it is an easy read, very open and honest, the style is conversational I liked. It felt like you were listening to good advice from a close friend. I’m not sure if my review made much sense, but it really is a great book, great message, great author.

I have never met Fr. Anthony yet somehow I feel like I know him. "Whatever God" is written with masterful, practical suggestions that draw you into the story - whether it be biblical or practical example. I am so glad Fr. Anthony got to this point - writing a Book! Fr. Anthony's words need to be read and known to all! This book explains the great richness we have in Christ Our God. Fr. Anthony has a comical flare to his writing. The book is easy to read and truly is a precious gem! It's been a while since I picked up a book to read and yet as soon as I picked up Fr. Anthony's book Whatever, God it was hard to put down. As a reader I was engaged from the introduction and was excited to continue reading and learning more. I appreciated the honesty and candidness in Fr. Anthony's writing style. I highly recommend this book for everyone, believer or otherwise.

Abouna Anthony has created what I have always hoped he would create!!! The blessing that this book offers is fresh, and new. Many people do not open up about their personal lives the way he does in this book. I have read a little bit more than 30% of the book and I have to say, every time I open it up; I find it hard to put down. Through little analogies with relationships, to descriptions of Scripture using our solar system, Abouna Anthony always manages to bring a fresh take to something you already knew. It's incredibly powerful in it's ability to cause you to reflect inwards and to think about your relationship with God in a more refined way. I'm only through about half of the book but I feel like I can't put it down! Father Anthony's writing style connects with you on a personal level. You almost feel like you are having a normal, casual conversation as he takes you on his life journey in his walk with God. "Whatever, God" illustrates the sweetness of submitting your will with God's will. It shows that although it might not be easy at times, it is fulfilling and satisfying. A truly inspiring book, and one that truly shows how God is real, relevant, and rewarding in our everyday lives. Highly recommended!

When i first heard a rumor the rumor on twitter about Fr. Anthony writing a book, I jumped out of my seat to find out more details. I got a PDF before hand because i agreed to give an honest review, so hear it is. I have yet to finish the book so I can't give a full honest review but so far so good. My ultimate favorite part of the book so far is Fr. Anthony's sense of humor and the fact that i can literally hear his voice in the background. This book is definitely a page turner, I have a couple of chapters left and I've only been reading for about 3 days. Fr. Anthony puts every point he wants to get across in such an easy different perspective, whether its math or a juicy story, the way the book is written makes you open your eyes to such simple things that we all make so complicated in our daily lives. I personally can't wait to finish the book!

Fr. Anthony Messeh discusses how to have a personal relationship with God- a topic that I feel doesn't get enough attention. I love how he uses scenarios from his own life to portray his message. The book is a very easy read and is set out in a conversational style, making it suitable to people of all ages- especially those in High School. Fr. Anthony does a great job of simplifying complex ideas and utilising his unique humorous style to explain them using modern day examples. If you're after a scholarly and academic book on this subject then this book is not for you but if you're after a simple yet deep message about how to grow closer to God and live a more fulfilling life then I'd highly recommend this book for you and anyone you know.

I have followed Fr.Anthony with his YouTube, blog and periscope for a couple of years now. He is indeed gifted to share God’s word in the most simple and relatable way. I was very excited and I had a lot of expectations when I learnt he wrote a book. I am half way through in my reading and I can say it has surpassed my expectations. What I love most about the book is how Fr.Anthony share his most personal experience even though he is cringing to write about it. This just gives power to the main point of the book which is to say ‘Whatever’ to God. The personal experiences, scripture stories, practical steps and prayer guidance makes this book a must read.

Good book. The book seems to be mainly written for those who either knew God at one point but have lost their way or for those who are earnestly seeking God, but are not sure where to start. The book takes you through the steps of who God is, who God should be to us and more importantly, how we can begin a relationship with Him. Fr. Anthony does a great job simplifying some Bible stories, so that even the novice could really get the most out of the story. The book is a quick read, and should definitely be considered for anyone actively seeking a relationship with God.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read ! I love the way Father Anthony writes, touching the heart in so many ways. I love the beginning of the book when Father Anthony tells his personal story , about his life and trusting God with his hole heart saying “Whatever God”. Practical spiritual advices for personal growth , who God is, how God works in our life, how to grow spiritually and in your relationship with God, and how to trust God with your hole heart. This is not just a book filled with simply words, it’s BLESSED words feeling the Holy Spirit, the touch of God’s hand from the beginning to the end! As Christians we all need spiritual growth, that’s why this book is for everyone!

Easy read. Very relevant to Christian life in the modern hustle and bustle of life. Fr. Anthony hits the nail right on the head of what it means to surrender life to God while illustrating the relevance God has to our everyday life. I highly recommend this book for both the seasoned Christian and new believer.

What ever, God is one of the books that you can’t stop reading. I love the way the writer put everything in easy and understandable way. Honestly speaking this book for sure will give you the energy we need to face our daily routine. Matter of fact i’m not fun of writing reviews but for this book I can’t stop my self from sharing the benefits I gain. Right season to have this book for you and your loved ones.

I highly recommend this book. It was simply written, easy to comprehend, and portrays a realistic perspective of how to submit to the will of God, particularly the plan He has for each one of us. Fr. I absolutely loved the book! Once I started it, I didn’t want to put the book down. It was a very easy read, making me laugh really hard at times, reflect on my own life and relationship with God, and making me want to grow my relationship with God. After starting the book, all I wanted to do was finish reading it, and then as I got closer to the end, I got sad that the book was going to finish. I just wanted to keep reading more. I hope this is just the beginning of a series of books to come that are written by Father Anthony!

I am not a bookworm, but when I started reading "WHATEVER, GOD" I could not stop! It is a simple guide that anyone who is seeking the presence of God in his life can follow, because it demonstrates in simple words that God is real, God is so close, and that a life without God is meaningless and useless. The author, having been one day on the other side of the fence, has succeeded to offer his hands-on experience to guide you to the right side of the fence. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I love this book. Its easy to read, easy to follow and most of all easy to implement. It has improved my relationship with God and my life, and I just read it a week ago. Do not hesitate to pick up a copy of this book, you won't regret it.

Fr. Anthony is a master story-teller. I’ve been listening to him on YouTube and Podcasts for several years. I was immediately captured in the introduction when he shared the conversation with his soon to be wife, Marianne in a book store coffee shop; “That’s how we’re going to live our lives. WHATEVER. Whatever God wants—we won’t say no. No matter what He asks of us, we will do it. No matter where He takes us or what He asks of us, we’ll do WHATEVER. Deal?” “Deal!” she said as we both realized the magnitude of what had just happened.
 Fr. Anthony blends personal experiences, scripture and the wisdom of ancient Christianity into a well thought out story. I’m about half way through the book at this point and I find myself chuckling as I turn the pages. If you want to enjoy a book while exploring how you can “Rediscover The One…” I highly recommend you read, “Whatever, God” by Fr. Anthony Messeh.

Most Christian books are long and boring and basically just quoting the Bible the whole time. There’s never a real story. Nothing I can relate to, at least. But Fr. Anthony found a way to make God part of a truly modern and newer world and so much of it I could relate to. He incorporated personal stories, making it easier to understand and connect to. Through his book, I’ve met God on a whole new and much more interesting level. Definitely recommend it!

refreshing, practical and humorous, it shows faith in very practical way as faith should be. it is like listening to someone tell you their story with God without looking down on you. you read it and sometimes you laugh out loud, other times you have to stop and think of how would you behave i that moment.

It's a personal narration of someone's experience with God, told in a very interesting way with lots of funny stories along with practical steps to guide you through your own experience. The author is humorous and you'll feel he's talking to you personally. It's a good read.

Whatever God is a great book for personal and spiritual growth. It's fun to read, while very deep in the ideas and messages it conveys. It can be best described in a few words as simple, practical, succinct, and valuable. Get ready for a paradigm shift that would take you to a higher and deeper level in your journey to find God, grow in your relationship with Him, and more importantly, to ENJOY it .

I enjoyed reading this book and found myself going back and re-reading some sections over again. Very helpful to help navigate important questions about who God is, His role in my life and how one can maximize on the opportunity to live a very FULL life. Really amazing book.. I found it important while I was reading it to really take the time and slow down and reflect on who God is to me, what is my perception of Him, what is the true depth of my relationship with Him.. how can I take the steps into just saying, “whatever”?

I love this book! It's not the first book that discusses faith, but it's by far one of my favourite. It's both serious and funny, and written with any parables that makes the teachings easy to understand. Father Anthony is very relatable and not your typical Coptic Priest - I'd love to meet him sometime. I'll definitely be referring back to this book from time to time

It was very helpful in getting to know my faith intimately. The book is well written to the point that I can hear Father Anthony's voice as I'm reading. Father Anthony Messeh is incredibly gifted to be able to explain the fundamentals of establishing a relationship with God in a very simple manner. The book delves into seemingly complex topics such as repentance, faith, prayer etc. and is able to elucidate them in a manner that makes logical ( and divine) sense. A light read in a genre which is full of complicated theology.

Truelly amazing book, Father Anthony in my eyes is a disciple of Jesus and an extension of Gods arm. He delivers his points effortlessly with no boring moments, fully inspirational. Always interesting especially with the use of todays modern language and his past life experiences. This book provides you with the right tools on discovering God, knowing God, forging a real relationship with God and trusting God for all good in your life. After reading this book, I really want to strive to be that 5+2=5000 guy. i highly recommend this book to anyone requiring that little help and knowledge in connecting with Him. With the right tools in place i believe that spiritual changes is possible in anyones life as long as they fully trust in God. I don't finish books i start; about 15% finish rate. I read this whole book. And i will now read it again. I am grateful for this book and grateful to the author. Above all i am grateful to God. This is a contemporary compatible message for any person that, imho, is biblical and orthodox.

I almost finished third of the book. I loved the fact that Fr. Anthony refers to real life examples including his own personal experience. I love his easy writing style. I hope everyone enjoys it and to be a true grace to many.
