If You've Been to the Disney Parks...
...pick up this book. My family and I recently went to Walt Disney world (not my first time). However, I found myself cranking my neck around this time in amazement at all the detail that goes into making every place and attraction "magical" at WDW. I had the time of my life and I felt like a kid again. When we returned from the trip, my mind has been "back in WDW" ever since. When I searched for background materials on "how they do it" at Disney Imagineering, I came across this book. I have found it to be a real descriptive book on all the work the Imagineering team puts into creating an themed attraction. When you go to the Disney Parks, you can tell that it is a labor of love that created those places! Great book to read before you head to a Disney Park!
Behind the Scenes at Disney
This book provides a fascinating look behind the scenes at Disney. My gifted students are using this as part inspiration, part guidebook as they plan a model of a Disney attraction. I spent about 3 hours after I received the book just browsing it, scanning for anything which could help my students in their unit and getting a feel for what Imagineers do. One of my students has this book at the top of his Christmas wish list. I would recommend it for any Disney enthusiast!
Treasure Trove of Disney Theme Park Concept Art
Some reviewers have criticized this book for its light literary style. While I agree that it doesn't really plumb the depths of the creative processes used by Disney Imagineers, it more than makes up for it with the hundreds of images of conceptual art that have been created by some very talented people over the years. For me, the early layouts for a possible amusement park in Burbank and the first drawings that we could call "Disneyland" were alone worth the price of admission. If you are looking for a more esoteric treatment of the Imagineering methods used at Disney, I would suggest the book "Designing Disney", by John Hench, a veteran of over sixty years with the company. I highly recommend this book to those who love the history of the Disney parks!
very interesting read
As a lifelong Disney fan, this book kept me reading
What a great book on Disney and his Dreams !
This book was a great book on Walt and his dreams ! Just what I wanted ! Walt was one of the greatest men of our times. He was a thinker and planned every move into a time frame. What I like about buying on Amazon is that I can read all the reviews that people posted and most always tell what is a good buy ! Great book !
Disney at its finest
If you have any interest in Disney behind the scenes, don't wait to get this book. Every oversize page is covered in artwork and photographs, including two-page photos and fold-outs. You get a slice of Disney's history, from pre-Disneyland all the way up to the present. The book focuses on the Imagineering design process, how do attractions get designed, where do they come up with their ideas? It's also full of interesting little facts and trivia that you probably didn't know. A top recommend to anyone who loves Disney theme parks.
Paperback version of the book.
Great book but was disappointed when it came as a paperback not a hardback.
Spectacular Book!!
Fabulous book!! Framable quality pages and chock FULL of amazing images. Details the making of films and has frame by frame development by the Imagineers. If the book seems a little spendy, it is. And it is worth it. Not just a coffee table book. You will page through it over and over again and find new things each time!

The Ultimate Imagineers Book
I taught high school art and retired a couple years ago. This was my bible for creative ideas and approach. I now teach at the college level and still use it regularly as a reference. I have gifted this book to several of my outstanding students. They loved it.
It does have some good images...
I did enjoy seeing some of the images in this book and overall it's a pretty good read but a lot of the info is what most Disney fans will already have heard or read somewhere by now. It's not exactly anything new or amazing in here.
For anyone interested in the more tech aspect of Disney
Great book , but a little lacking on detailed information, I guess Isner is still present and Disney will only let only a small amount of there stuff out the door so to speak, I suppose you can't blame them they spent a lot of time and energy getting it right ...there really isn't anywhere else on this planet that has gone to so much trouble to make get it right...I would have liked to know more tech stuff than is in here...
Great book and the sketch was a nice surprise.
This is a great read. I need to get the Imagineering Haunted Mansion book next.
Worth a read
Amazing book. Will be reading it many times.
It’s an important part of my Disney book library
Wonderful book and well written
Great For Disney Lovers!
This book offers an excellent behind the scene look into Disney and Imagineering from the Imagineers themselves. Lots of excellent pictures and facts. I would definitely recommend it for those who love Disney.
Five Stars
Excellent Part I book in a now two part series. From Walt's WED/Imagineering beginning.
Thanks
As advertised
Another gift to myself.
I had bought the second one without knowing there was a first one. I enjoyed them both. The more I learn about my favorite place on Earth, the more I want to know. I'm a manufacture engineer. It must be amazing to work for a company like this as an Imagineer.
Beautiful Book
This book was an amazing combination of original Disney art and facts. I love the fact that it covered Disney attractions from around the world and added commentary about how they were created. Well presented and beautifully designed.
Great visuals but short on analysis
Michael Eisner, President of Disney, writes in the introduction that he was initially very much opposed to the concept of a book telling the story of the famous Disney Imagineers.' Well, it shows in the book! The pics are fabulous. You are invited into the Imagineers' visions. As a reader you perch on that precarious tip of the branch were you can see in two directions. Looking backward, you can see enough of the immense leap between nothing in the mind and something in the imagination. Looking forward you can sense the chasm between imagination and embodiment. So the visuals work. But what is missing is the conceptual tools that make the flight of fantasy arrive in the world of bricks and mortar. That part of the story the reader must unravel all by him or herself.
Great pictures, had hoped for more stories
While this book has many terrific photos and sketches, please be aware that it reads a bit like a 'textbook'. That is not to say that it is not worthwhile and does not contain some terrific stories, but the bulk of the text reads like well edited copywritten material. It starts off strong, but wanes quickly when the 'Walt' stories dry up. I expected something with a bit more personal connection to the many wonderful imagineers that overcame technical & artistic challenges to bring joy to millions. I was hoping for more cool 'Disney stories' and (being an engineer myself) had hoped they would be one's where the imagineers were the heros! There are tons of photos with captions showing the imagineer's names, but you wouldn't know much about any of them after reading this particular book. I haven't 'read' the entire book, but I'm not sure that I will either; the bulk of the value of this book is in the graphics and I have certainly enjoyed all of those! Please don't let my review put you off this book (it's really a pretty nice book), just understand what you are getting upfront and enjoy it for what it is.
Disney Imagineering
I received this book two days ago and havent been able to put it down since! After an intial flick through the amazing photos, I have begun to read it from cover to cover and each page is a delight on its own. It is such a wonderful look at Imagineering and the magic of Disney that it will be opened continuously no doubt for years to come.
How the magic happens!
This is truly an eye-opening look at what went on behind-the-scenes to bring the Disney magic to life. It was as inspiring as it was informative. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the Disney Parks, especially those who aspire to become an Imagineer someday like me.

Excellent!
I have been a student of Walt Disney for over 50 years. This is another great example of the quality of this all american company.
Walt Disney Imagineering: Behind-the-Dreams Look at Making the Magic Real
Great artwork! Interesting to see projects explained or to see visually from conception to fruition.

Awesome book! Fun facts and pictures, great to flip through. Highly recommend buying if you love the parks!
Great
Glad to have this book. Reasonably fast for post to Australia. Although specified as new it was a little torn. Otherwise Brilliant.
Just what she wanted
Christmas gift for our daughter- it was enjoyed and will be for a time to come. She was quite excited
Just okay
My 14 year old son has dreams of being an imagineer when he grows up. As I was planning our first trip to Disney World, I came across this book, and thought it would be great for him to read through, and get a lot of his questions answered. He reported back to me that he thought the book was a little boring. I looked through it, and I agree with him. It's not as exciting or interesting as I expected it to be. The pictures and illustrations are great, but the information is just not that enlightening.
Nice used book in great shape
this is a great book and the transaction was as expected... on time, in the condition stated and a good price point.
Two Stars
Book was great, seller not so much. Book came with tears and rips and creases.
Inside the House of the Mouse
Part company history, part seminar on the process of creation, "Walt Disney Imagineering" is a vivid, sometimes eye-opening guide to the imaginative spirit that drives the Walt Disney empire. Disney started this subsidiary in 1952 and gave it the job to design and develop Disneyland. Despite his success as an animator, he was untested in running a theme park, and he was unable to get his company's board of directors to invest in what back then seemed an outlandish idea ("dreams offer too little collateral" Walt ruefully confessed at the time). "WDI" reprints the initial maps of the park, and with each repetition, we see Disney's dreams growing, from the 11-acre Riverside Drive property originally envisioned to the 50-acre park it eventually became. To those who only see the finished product on film or in the stores, the amount of detail and effort that goes into creating the Disney universe is astonishing. Every element must be drawn or modeled, and the Disney creative process demands that each design go through several iterations, sometimes through substantial changes. The result is a gallery of ideas and images, worked in painting styles both impressionistic and realistic. Elaborate models are created, such as the gym-floor sized Epcot layout or the six-foot tall "Tree of Life" that towers 13 stories over Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando. Not surprisingly, the Imagineers have grasped computer modeling with the same enthusiasm they have put in everything else they do. Some of the best pictures describe projects that never were. A ski resort in Northern California. An entertainment center in Burbank. A "House of Cheese" design for a proposed food pavilion at Epcot. But these are not complete wastes of time and money. Projects that were interrupted for one reason may be revived and continued for another. For Disneyland Paris, artist Tim Delaney reworked Sleeping Beauty's castle into a three-towered art nouveau structure modeled on Mont Saint-Michel that looks as stunning and startling as the Eiffel Tower must have looked to Parisians a century ago. Even a Ferris wheel designed in 1954 was revived 40 years later for Disneyland Paris. "WDI" gives the impression of a corporate culture that demands creativity, and pays for it by encouraging exploration and curiosity. The book is exuberant and unabashed eye candy for Disney fans, a treasure trove of artistic styles and an inspiring guide that describes what it takes to take an idea and see it through to the finished product.
A Well Structured Compendium
The Imagineers, who have been put together by Walt Disney himself from his staff of animators, put their imagination and engineering expertise to work, making their movies in three-dimension. Anyone who visits Disney World, Florida will immediately note that not a detail gets by them where there is no cultural or graphic response to the scenery. All parts are integral, and the Imagineers recognize this. Some of the most wonderful aspects of their work is in the smallest detail, so as not to stand out, instead, it blends into the environment (like it should). The book is set up into parts of the varying departments of the Imagineers, in the stages in which they prepare a project. Like Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas' book 'The Illusion of Life' they do not fail to recognize good work from a particular artist. Even here, in the lesser known trait of architecture and engineering, the names are noted as any famous artist, which is refreshing and respectable for the artists in their own respective fields to be continually influenced by their peers. A wonderful book that is easy to read, does not burden the reader with too much technical jargon, and easy to appreciate the many pictures of their work. Certainly Disney enthusiasts will enjoy this book, as well as a prospective Imagineer.
Tons of great graphics, beautiful renderings
A bible for any Disney fans... enough said! Tons of great graphics, beautiful renderings, and even a little surprising folding pages. The texts are well written and it goes into detail about what were the thought process behind each creation of the attractions. The writer kept me entertained and addicted to reading pages after pages, it is like a whole magical world packed into a book, the same feeling when you enter Disneyland. I protect this book like a treasure, and I wear gloves to handle the book, it is THAT Special!!
Disneyland Lovers Dream
I bought this book a few years ago at Disneyland and I love it. I look through it every couple of months and I am amazed at the amount of pictures and drawings in the book. Near the end of the book you can see some concept drawings of Westcot (the planned west coast version of Epcot that was later dropped for Disney's California Adventure). There is also a small model of California Adventure that looks very different than the final product. Let's be honest, being an Imagineer would be the coolest job ever, so it's amazing to finally have a book actually put together by the Imagineers themselves.
Just buy it
I had a hard time finding this book, and guess where I am...Orlando, Florida! You'd think that there would be plenty on the shelves! When I finally found it, there were only two on the shelf in a small section on the 2nd floor of Barnes & Nobles! I was just in awe at the book, I expected many pages of text, but I can't remember a full page of text in this huge book. It's full of illustrations and pictures that really make you feel like you're one of the Imagineers checking out ideas for the parks. For anyone who likes Disney, or really anyone who enjoys design, art, architecture, etc.; or just needs a good coffee table book, this book is stupendous, and you get a deal here on Amazon. ... I hope they come out with another book.
An inside look at the Disney Dream Factory
As a former Disney Imagineer, I was curious to see how the old gang at Disney Imagineering would tell "our" story. Not Bad. A visual feast filled with the stories behind designing the world's grandest theme parks. They were less generous than they could have been when naming key players on several projects--especially if those Imagineers had moved on before the book was compiled. All-in-all a fun, fascinating and accurate look backstage at the Disney Dream factory. Unless you go to work there, this is the closest you'll get to seeing concept paintings, models, mock-ups and images of great ideas that never got built. As our boss, Marty Sklar, once said, "Dead projects tell no tales" Now, they do in this big, heavily illustrated book. Congrats to Bruce Gordon, Kevin Rafferty, Dave Mumford, Mel, Pam, and all the delightful "pinheads" who pulled this together. It was worth getting one more memo (inside the book) from Marty (in an in-house mail, manila envelope) with his now-famous red felt pen notes scribbled accross the page.
Great for Disney and Imagineering Fans
I added this book to my collection several years ago, and it is a great addition to any Disney or Imagineering fan's collection. I personally am a huge fan of Walt Disney the man, and all the projects he was involved in. This book gives more images than anything else, but some of the images and the little bit of information it gives is definitely interesting and fun to have. If you are looking for something more in depth about Imagineering I don't know if you will really find it here - it is similar to what you might get in watching a behind the scenes special feature on a DVD, it just glosses over some of the projects and plans throughout Disney Imagineering history.
Very inspiring, if not completely detailed
I loved this book because it has so many pictures. It is most interesting to see aspects of the rides that you might not get to view by visiting the park. The enthusiasm of this book is inspiring for anyone who is interested in theme park design. It does not get into anthing too technical, or show you what an Imagineer does from day to day on a regular basis. I would reccomend this book if you are interested in seeing Disneyland from another angle or if you want to be a theme park designer. It is a very good book if you aren't looking for technical advice, just to have fun and get excited!
Food for the Mind
I saw this book in Downtown Disney while visiting. It is the most interesting behind-ths-scenes look into Disney's imagineers. I can go to any of the parks and be awed over and over and over again. This book lets you see how things came to be. It includes information on rides, parks and lots of other stuff. I suggest getting it from Amazon where it is much cheaper. I would have waited and ordered it from them if I knew they had carried it. A must have for any Disney fan's library.
Inspiring for any Disney Fan
This book contains an astonishing array of images and sketches from throughout the development of various projects the Imagineers have worked on. If you are interested in really understanding the forced perspective of Cinderella's Castle, or the graphical concept behind "It's A Small World", or if you're just a big fan of the Disney theme parks, this is a remarkable resource, full of life and creative spark. Though it does not have any sort of case study of the development of any particular attraction (though why would it since the most important part of the development is the final version, the one that guests get to enjoy!), a single flip through the book will reveal the vast amount of effort that goes into the Imagineer's creations. Through a closer inspection it is possible to understand the intricate ways in which the various departments collaborate on the projects. Overall, it's a spectacular collection of images and ideas, and is well worth the money for anyone who has ever dreamed of being an Imagineer.
Everything you wanted to know...
A phenomenal book giving you a peek about how Disney approaches imagineering in their parks, hotels, and other venues. It's an easy read - great for flipping through - but it does an excellent job of giving you a sense of how the imagineering team came to be, what they do, how they do it, and what lies ahead. This is not a "business how-to book" but it will be a great source of information for anyone fascinated with Disney.
Fun to read. Fascinating to look at
This is a great book. Be sure to put this book somewhere you can frequently refer to it. I've found it fun to look at the images and the sketches over and over again. The paperback format is large, and I get nervous when I spread the book binding to view the illustrations. I hope it stands up to heavy use. Now, remember who wrote the book and accept the company line. However, this is a book that speaks to the traditions of creativity and imagination...while entertaining at the same time. Solid writing style, easy to pick up and put down.
This is the most inspirational and motivating book I've read
This is the BEST book I have EVER read. I'm 14 years old and ever since I came back from Walt Disney World in 1999 after seeing the Millennium Celebration, I have wanted to be an architect for Walt Disney Imagineering. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Disney or wants to be an Imagineer. It has inspired and motivated me to be the best I can be and to look at everything as an oppritunity to see and learn new things. I have never wanted to be an Imagineer more since reading this book. It gives you a beautiful and rare collection of WDI drawings and paintings and what it's like to be an Imagineer. They explain the jobs there and tell you what it was like to work for some of their biggest projects. I was sad when I finished this book! Each page motivated me to turn to the next and keep reading until my eyes fell out! There are inspiring quotes from Walt Disney and the Imagineers themselves. The the Best and Only book on Walt Disney Imagineering.
have you ever wondered how they did it?
I have wondered how they have done it for a long time, and this book shows the magic behind the scenes. They don't give their secrets away, but they give you enough information to really see how smart and talented this group of people is. You will look at any Disney park different after you read this book, its gives you a new look one things at Disney. If you want to had an idea how things work @ Disney pick this book up, its a steal for the price they are selling it at.
A beautiful volume for Disney lovers
I absolutely cherish this book and reviit it time and again just to look at the photos and drawings. Contains detailed information about how the Imagineers go about creating the Disney theme parks and hotels and shows all of the imagination and attention to detail that goes into that process. No wonder these are some of the most magical places on earth. Everything is engineered to the human experience. Contains photos from WDW, Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Tokyo, and sketches and models of some attractions never built. Shows the entire process from conception of an idea to developing color schemes, to building models, to actual contstruction.
The Best Behind-the-Scenes Disney Book ever written
Let me start off saying that I am a Disney fanatic. Particularly anything that has to do with the construction and design of the disney parks. This book has it all everything from the idea of a ride right up to the installation process. I keep this book with me at all times, constantly rereading it time and time again. I was lucky enough to purchase it (in hardcover) 2 years ago in Walt Disney World, and I have not stopped reading it since. I only wish there were more imagineering books out there. To the Disney Imagaineers- Thank you for giving us a peek at what must be a very rewarding job. A job I hope to have someday.
great book for the Disney fan
This is a beautiful informative book. My kids just enjoy looking at the pictures from their favorite movies and the theme parks. The accompanying stories are interesting and full of fun facts. So much is written about the imagineers it's nice to find one book that is first hand accounts and backgroundn info. If you've ever visited WDW or Disneyland this book gives you a whole new insight into what went into creating these magical places.
Imagine a book that actualy makes you want to design...
This book is my favorite book of the Imagineers. There are a few on the market now, but it seems that this one is just... complete! So many great stories, drawings and interesting facts... IT makes you want to design your own park! The book is well illustrated, written and composed. There is actualy a story-line! All the way from the beginning to the latest developments! This is an edition to keep.
Wonderful for Disney Fans
This is a great book for any Disney fan. The artwork is phenomenal and the insight is wonderful. I keep it in public view and get tons of comments on it. Everyone wants to say "I went to Adventure Land in such and such a year and we did (fill in the blank)." It never fails to get comments, and, as Disney fan, I'm glad.
A picture book? You bet...
I hate to think, as being a teacher, that I would find a picture book, something that emphasizes the relaxed, casual glance at pages, so enticing, but I'm going to recommend it. As a Disney Theme Park fan, I still pick this one up when I'm blue and need a charge. I guess, in the back of my mind, I've always wanted to create the wonderments the park has, and, since I can't, these provides for all the gaps my dreams have. Good stuff, even for the none Disney fan, for it has a visual language that is easy to understand and enjoy.
An absolute must for any aspiring "imagineering designers"!
This is an absolutely fantastic inside look at the design process of Disney Imagineering. The book details the past, present and future projects along with great anecdotes from the Imagineers themselves. The book is also filled with rich pictures, illustrations, and sketches from projects both built and left on the "shelf". As one who wishes to pursue a thempark design career, this book acts as a great reference tool and both inspires and motivates your creative juices. -Ken G.
Inspirational
When I bought this book, I didn't think it would be very exciting, but I was wrong. It is very inspirational, once you see what your mind can actually develop from a tiny spark. Tiny sparks became Cinderella's Castle, Pirates of the Caribbean, and parks themselves.
Great pictures, little insight
The illustrations, pictures, etc. are exceptional and make the book worth a serious look. The big disappointment is the lack of true insight into the real design process behind the parks. Instead we get a superficial retelling of anecdotes from old Imagineers, and a tremendous amount of self-congratulation. Sure, what they do is special--that's why I'm reading the book. I don't need to be reminded of it in every paragraph. Overall, it's worth it, but anyone looking for real insight into the design issues around the parks will be disappointed.
Great coffee table book
A great "coffee table" book on what Disney does when Imagineering takes over. Great pictures of concepts and ideas over the history of Disney.
An Excellent Collection of Photos, Concepts, and Information
My goal in life is to be an Imagineer, and fortunately I have connections with the company. But I needed something to help me learn more about Imagineering before I start working there in a few years. This book has so much information, it's overwhelming. The pictures and the comments are all great, and it will take some time to get through this whole book (which is very large in size, I was surprised to find out) and not miss a thing. A great buy for anyone interested in Disney theme parks. I highly recommend it
Terrific for any Disney fan!
This is the first book specifically about the parks I purchased and I am thrilled with it. The pictures are absolutely incredible! If you are looking for a book that gives detailed information on the specifc rides or parks this is not for you. I think that any Disney fan, casual or die-hard, will enjoy this book.
Buy it, buy it, buy it!
To anyone and everyone who is even the slightest bit interested in finding out how the imagineers made some of the rides at WDW or other Disney theme parks, this is the book to buy. There isn't a dull page in it. It is worth every cent. The pictures are fascinating and the information is useful and helpful for those who are planning on becoming an Imagineer someday.
Great book
Anyone interested in the behind the scenes of Disney magic will love this. I enjoy all the theme parks and found this book engaging from beginning to end.
Greatest Disney Book BY FAR.
This has to be one of the best Disney books I've read. I recently bought it at the Walt Disney Family Museum, and I just cant put it down! Its informative, colorful, and a great Disney Geek book! I recommend this to anyone interested in how the imagineering process works, and how they do the things they do! If you're a Disney Geek, You aren't yet complete with this book.
I admit it...
...I didn't realize that Imagineering was going to be exclusively based on the Disney theme parks. I was... well, more than a little disappointed when I opened it up and looked for the many illustrations and stuff about the making of the movies, that I confess I thought would be there. The book in itself was nicely put together, and DOES look attractive, in terms of what was in there. I can clearly see why anyone would greatly enjoy it. Nevertheless, in my case it sits collecting dust on my shelf. I blame myself: I should have looked just a little deeper in what the book was going to be about, before purchasing it. A technical explanation of the process of the theme parks' creation was... uh, boring. *laugh*
Absolutely incredible. A Disney fan "must"!
This is absolutely the most "disney" of any Disney book ever written. Outstanding pictures, stories and insight into what truly separates Disney parks from the rest... the magic. A "must have" for anyone who enjoys, or dreams of enjoying, Disney theme parks.
A real treasure
This book is a real treasure for everyone who wants to know what goes on inside the heads of the Disney Imagineers. It is filled with the most wonderful drawings and pictures of ( almost) all the Disney parks and rides. I wished there were more books about Disney like this one.
I LOVE This Book!
I don't normally write reviews, but after receiving this yesterday I can honestly say that I LOVE this book! Amazing. 10 years old, but still so insightful and interesting. Perfect for anyone with a keen interest in the Disney parks.
Awesome Read
This book is an incredible read, except for one thing-the book has no information on how to become a Walt Disney Imagineer. I was really disappointed to find that the Imagineers left out such a vital part for readers like me who want to join the league of extraordinary individuals who make the Disney magic happen. All in all, this book has great pictures of original designs for the attractions, rides, and more.
Any Imagineering Enthusiast Needs this Book
Anyone who has ever dreamed of being an imagineer needs this book. It has interesting construction photographs and artist renderings, however it doesn't have as much in depth and truly new information as I hoped it would. Overall, worth the money.
Great book
Saw this amazing book at Disney World, paid half the price on Amazon.com, my Mom loved it! Great book, love all the background of the creativeness that was behind making WDW.
Not a Lot of Meat Here
This is just a PR piece for the Disney company, a way to build hype so more people will buy their products and see their shows. I was hoping for some nuts & bolts advice on designing theme parks and theme park rides. Everybody knows how to brainstorm; everybody knows the importance of color and lighting and music; everybody models on computers before they make physical models. What do Imagineers do that's different? Do they have special techniques for brainstorming, or for choosing colors, or stage lighting? The answers are not here. Also, what have Imagineers learned from their mistakes? If you take this book at face value, Imagineers have never made mistakes; everything they've done is perfect, and any criticism leveled at Walt Disney world was later retracted or countered.
