After reading The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, Christy Somerville incorporated more mindfulness into her morning walks and found it helped to focus and calm her mind.

Mindfulness can help children manage their emotions and behaviors. The “grounding” techniques of using all five senses, breathing deeply, and focusing on the present can help to settle an anxious mind.

Walking with the Moon uses colorful pictures and a poem to demonstrate mindfulness rather than explaining it.

Especially in this challenging time through which we are all living, this beautifully illustrated walk through the awakening morning is a sweet primer in finding and appreciating the joy, wonder and goodness in the simple things that surround us. I want all of my nieces and nephews (the young and the old) to have this book!

What a wonderful gift to humans of all ages- a chance to awake, breathe and let go of the stress of life these days and replace it with wonder and simple joys. Somerville invites us along for a walk with the invitation also to breathe out our fear and breathe in the beauty and joy that are all around us, step by step. Delightful book!!

Knowing the neighborhood ,I found myself immersed in the illustrations and text. I have depended on my walks to keep grounded in this challenging time. I want all six of my grandchildren to read “Walking with the Moon”. Thanks Christy and Jim! Raylene

Mindfulness in words and art

Everything about this book is perfect! The poetic style guides a child to use his or her senses to experience the early morning scene in an urban neighborhood. (And this could be any urban neighborhood!) Each illustration supports the poetry perfectly. I love that the author-artist team used photographs from the author's walk for each piece of art. I'll be reading this to my grandchildren and know that the book will encourage their own mindfulness.

Perfect for children in this difficult time

The author's compassion and gentleness are evident in this beautifully written work. Simply reading the easy cadence of the rhyme sets the stage for a time of peaceful mindfulness for a child. This is an excellent read-aloud for bedtime decompression or when your child needs a little tranquility in this world of worry and apprehension. We all can use a little more mindfulness. Highly recommended!

Mindfulness for Kiddos (of all ages)

What a gift for our young ones—to be invited through a moon drenched appreciation of the Fan District of Richmond, VA into the intention of mindfulness. I wish I had had this book when I was young (or when my children were!). Christy’s gentle kindness is the attentive assurance children need (and a welcomed gift for adults too!), Jim’s graphic design, the perfect complement.

Terrific Book

I bought this on a friend's recommendation and was absorbed by its charm. What a vivid reminder for all ages that our engines run too fast and we need to slow down and enjoy the glow of gingko leaves or a the beauty of a lit up church. I found the artwork fascinating; I'll be adding this to my list of favorite kids' books to buy as gifts.

Mindfulness in the everyday

While the book is for early readers, Ms Somerville's story of mindfulness can be a primer for those seeking to deepen everyday life. My wife and I read it to our 5 year old grandson a.nd it kept his attention.. A good book to take with you on walks with grandchildren.

Calming and peaceful book!

Only a gifted teacher could demonstrate how to put mindfulness into practice in a way that all of us can model. While this book is geared to children, it’s exactly what I’ll be thinking of on my next walk! The illustrations perfectly complement the text.

What a wonderful tool for mindfulness

I do group therapy with children in a hospital setting and I am so looking forward to using this book! Mindfulness is such a useful skill for everyone (kids especially). The lovely illustrations are very calming and compliment the text extremely well.

What a lovely book

Mindfulness is something I am struggling to learn as an adult, so even though this was written for children, I found it quite useful for my own practice. Since I often go for walks with my 2 great nephews, this is something I can see myself giving them to help make our walks even more meaningful and to encourage their mindfulness when we are apart. This is a charming and beautiful book that everyone can enjoy.

Great Rhyme

The story has a great rhyme. It will assist children to be present to the senses and sounds around them, even to seek them out. The page on breath, with a focus on the feelings that lighten us, gives us a resource for when we are feeling heavy. Children, as well as adults, can find something in reading this. The illustrations are bright and colorful as they match the storyline. My wife and I rated it a 5 and are buying this for our granddaughter Eleanor.

Great Mindfulness Example

This book shows students mindfulness strategies in practice rather than explaining it. A fun walk through town while noticing the world around you.

Delightful as well as Helpful

I found this book to be delightful and freeing while using a creative method to help children learn mindfulness. As a former teacher and current counselor I think it could be most helpful right now for the numerous children struggling with our current times.

This is an absolutely charming book featuring a mindfulness walk (with the moon no less!) through the Museum District of Richmond, VA. Young children will love the story and illustrations and both parent and child will benefit from a helpful lesson on how to regain composure in stressful times.
