Voice-Over Voice Actor: The Extended Edition

I bought this book on the recommendation of a well respected Voice Actor, Robert Paulsen, who incidentally wrote the Foreword for this edition. I was asking him about resources for people looking to "break into the Biz"as it were. I myself do not aspire to produce voice over work, but I wanted to learn as much as I could to help my teenage son, who is autistic, have the opportunity to do so if he chooses that path. He has an innate aptitude for mimicry, and will practice independently to perfect his latest impression. To be honest, this book has been everything I could have hoped for as far as relaying the necessary information, and I was delighted to find how much of themselves that Tara and Yuri have breathed into the pages. As a self proclaimed autodidact, I always enjoy when the author/s teach while also speaking in their own unique voice, or in this case, voices. Thank you, Platt-Lowenthals, for this amazing labor of love. I look forward to referring back to it many times in the future.

The original edition was the first voice over book I ever bought. I used it as a VO Bible. Read it every couple of months and picked up something new EACH and every time! Without a doubt It helped me become a successful voice actor. As proof, I was asked to write a passage in this Extended Edition. Yuri and Tara have done it again. Updating it perfectly! The book is quite interesting and there's a lot of different information but nothing particular. If you need a book on how to improve your voice, especially if you have some problems with it then this book is not gonna help you. Also if you need real advice on how to work with scripts and how to make your voice sound natural then again this book is not for you. The authors emphasize that first you have to be an actor and you need practice, practice and more practice. But anyway, if you want to know more about voice over industry in general and how everything works then it's pretty good book.

This second edition is an even more in-depth and helpful guide to the world of voice over and motIon-capture. Tara and Yuri break down everything into easily digestible segments that is fun to read and even more fun to implement. It is an essential handbook for any actor beginning their forwray into voice over, and a welcome and helpful reminder for those who would like a refresher course featuring smart and safe practices. I also cannot stress enough how important this book is for helping actors with auditioning and working professionally in the voice-over world.

Love this book , reading it slowly so that I absorb all the informative information . Shares a lot of knowledge of Tara & Yuri . Also other experiences of other voice actors . It’s also funny in the way the speak about experiences . The book is very enjoyable and is a excellent read !!!

This is a very detailed and very informative book that covers just about every aspect of voice over/acting. Everything is very well written and explained in a casual way which makes it fun to read and easier to understand. A lot of information is packed into this book and none of it is useless. I love it and it will aid many aspiring voice actors.

I am taking the dive into voiceover / voice acting and this book is a great resource from two pros in the biz! They bring practical advise with their years of being in the trenches (as well as the booth) and what they have experienced as well as the ebbs and flow of the business. It covers every aspect that a newbie needs to have a great foundation to step forth in this strange new world of VO/VA. Highly recommended !

Their first book has helped me so much in establishing a presence in the voice over community. This book continues to build on their tips and provide true insight to what is involved in the lifestyle for those with the passion and resolve to pursue such a thing. I recommend this wholeheartedly.

This book is full of great information not just from the authors but other iconic voice actors that I have grown up listening to. I am finding it full of information I am not just taking notes on but putting into exercises and restructuring the way I am going about getting into this field.

This book is extremely informative, and practical. The authors are experienced in the field, and take you through every aspect of the adventure - from learning about opportunities that are available, to recording your own sample performances for auditions. Easy to read and understand. Good job!

Loaded with information this was a pleasant surprise! I refer to this book a lot. Haven't read straight through but jump around depending on what I need or want at the moment. A true VO treasure

I really wanted to understand the nuance and neurotic questions for going into the voice acting industry, and this book has just been perfect! Very down to earth and constructive. Also provides quotes and thoughts from other people in the industry that alay any feeling that the ideas put forth are simply the main authors experience or bias. 100% recommend.

I really enjoyed the tips presented in VOVA. It's well written, easy to follow, and offers solid advice for those looking to get into the industry. It has really rekindled my desire to get into the field and can really offer the "push" someone needs. Overall, a great read.

If you are an aspiring voice actor this is the book to get. Reading it is like having a conversation with a good friend.

Great and captivating audiobook read by the authors. A fun ride through the VO industry

...and filled with awesome exercises! This book provides solid info on Pcap and MOcap which I haven't read in other VO books. This book is sprinkled with amusing anecdotes from working professionals... read this book and learn something new.

Very easy, informative and entertaining book to read. Highly recommended if you're thinking about getting into Voice Acting.

Perhaps if i read the print edition, I'd have more good things to say about this work; but I listened to the audiobook and, for a text all about making it as a voice artist, the recording is rough: there's distortion on the vocals; many of the passages are rushed; and much of the text hasn't been prepared for audio narration (throughout the work, we dive into narrative passages only to find out, after the fact, that the narrators are quoting other people - and so we're constantly rethinking, and getting wrong, who these people are and what they're saying). On the plus side, it's upbeat and encouraging, but that isn't enough for this reader.

I mean, it just is. There isn't anything out there that's more definitive or helpful or insightful or motivational than this. And the extra resources that are available on the website? Fuggetaboutit. Yes, the info is a little old, the updated edition is crucial because the original is quite out of date. However, at this point, post-pandemic and with technology up our butts, even the updated version has some old info. Regardless, a better road map to the world of VO does not exist. This book will pay for itself in no time.

Fantastic and uplifting guide to building a VO career! Yuri and Tara nail so many key concepts to VO, from technical aspects such as demo reel crafting and microphone selection to the desired mental state/approach when voicing for auditions or projects. Everything they say has so much positivity, wisdom and wit, making the guide a captivating one that feels more like a conversation than a book or audiobook. Speaking of, I completed the Audible version before purchasing the paperback, and having read both, I recommend paperback or Kindle over audiobook. I loved hearing Yuri and Tara explain the ins and outs of the VO industry (I couldn't stop hearing Yuri as PS4 Spider-Man), but much of their explanation and guidance is done through charts and visuals, which are difficult to appreciate through the audiobook. The audiobook does have redeeming qualities such as vocal examples during explanations for auditions and demos, but I would still recommend the paperback overall. However, if you want what I would consider optimal comprehension of VOVA, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook first and then purchasing the book as a more consistent guide for reference. No matter what format you get VOVA in, though, you are sure to receive loads of useful information in a fun, peppy guide! Many thanks to Yuri, Tara, and everyone involved in putting this awesome resource together!

I've bought the first book which was very informative, gave plenty of tips and was actually really fun to read. This edition keeps it on going by adding a lot more information which was also really helpful. Seriously if you're interested in becoming an actor this is the book you need to get!

I loved this book 100%. It has great knowledge, and it’s very informative about the industry. This book is the best because it provides you knowledge that other actors might be willing to share. Yuri and Tara are two individuals that you WON’T regret learning from. :) - alicerose

Well written, well edited, well ebooked. Unfortunately, the book doesn't seem to warn it's readers about "All the stars that never were ... parking cars and pumping gas." Hat tip to Burt Bacharach.
