Good book for standard dishes with more kicks
Pleasantly surprised by the amount of information put in by the author. It has a nice, balanced combination of recipes and Japanese food culture/location recommendation. Several things that made this book really stood out from my collection of Japanese cooking books: 1. A very detailed miso soup section, starting from types of miso to the possible combination of vegetables fitting to each miso type, color photo of each combo provided; (good-bye, seaweed & tofu soup from your local Japanese restaurants) 2. Several traditional bento recipes(names you actually see in a Japanese local food store/Laws*n), providing sub recipes for each dish featured in the bento; 3. A good selection of preserved vegetable recipes; 4. Extensive gyoza (Chinese dumplings) recipe section, listing a few different methods and stuffing combinations. As an experienced gyoza maker I can see the knowledge & efforts spent on putting them up; In summary I am very satisfied with my purchase and recommend this to someone who is generally familiar with Japanese food but wanted to have that one step further of flavoring up their normal menu.
Pictures Pictures Pictures!
I collect cookbooks & this is my first Japanese food cookbook so it was mandatory that I get a book with pictures. If you are a visual foodie like I am then you will like this book. Seeing pictures of the food through out this book really helps because sometimes the ingredients don’t sound that good but then you see what the finished product looks like and it makes you want to it try it. Very well put together, easy to understand and alot to read and look at! I’m happy to add this book to my collection.
Nothing cult about it, just beloved basics
These days, it seems the only way to shop for cookbooks is to look in one's public library. I checked out six, perused them all and liked this one the best. For one thing, it's a beautifully designed and compiled book. If you're a graphic designer and like Japanese, you'll love this book. Everything is explained in easy to understand detail with associated delicious looking photos. Yes, you will need to find ingredients like Japanese chili powder, kombu, bonito flakes and miso in a Japanese grocery, but dry ingredients last a long time. Mirin, soy sauce, dried ramen and sake in most supermarkets these days.

Growing up with a Japanese mother, this book is a very accurate representation of everything she ever made for me. I actually can't thing of a single thing that was not in here. Not only is this book beautiful, but all the recipes are very doable if you have typical Japanese staples stocked in your home. It's seriously worth getting.
easy to follow and fun recipes
I got this book for my daughter who has gotten into creating new and fun different dinners darning the quarantine. She has been using this books to whip up Isolation Dinners and said they are both easy to understand and follow and quite tasty as well. One thing her 5 year likes are the photos are quite nice.
Great Japanese Cookbook!
This is exactly what I was looking for in a Japanese cookbook. The recipes are fairly simply and taste authentic and great! I feel like I'm in Japan any time I give one of these recipes a go. It has a good variety of main meals and side dishes which was much appreciated. If you're new to Japanese cooking, this makes for a fantastic first cookbook!
Both beautiful and practical
Beautiful book with a wide range of interesting recipes from simple and familiar to complex and unusual. So far all the recipes have been doable and relatively easy with all ingredients available locally or through Amazon. I bought this as I really like Japanese cooking and food but didn't expect to have some many relatively simple, go-to mid week dinner type recipes.
Lots of beautiful pictures
This is the most beautiful cookbook I’ve ever seen. All traditional Japanese recipes interspersed with artistic pictures of Japan.

Great Japanese home cookbook
Broad range of dishes to be made by the home cook. Good illustrations of how to prepare rice balls, gyoza, stuffed cabbage. Also good explanation of specialty ingredients

Great book!
This is how all cookbooks should be written! Clear instructions, additional notes, and photos to each recipe!
Easy and fun read
I am so excited I purchased this book! I made the udon noodles and my husband loved it! The recipe was easy to follow and came out wonderful!
Super cute with great recipes!
I bought this for a gift and when it arrived I was not disappointed. The cover is a nice smooth matte finish and the pages pop with color. The recipes and info are awesome and there are little notes and explanations throughout the book. Great gift for a Japanese cuisine enthusiast!
Must for all the Japanese dishes I crave for
All the recipes are carefully written and the ones I've already tried are so tasty!! There are so many dishes in the book I thought I could only taste from restaurants or specialty stores. Now I can make them really well without even putting in too much effort. It also thought me how to use only several essential ingredients to create an authentic Japanese flavour profile!
Delicious and adorable
The recipes in this book are so good and super authentic. I love the pictures and tutorials images. We got one as a gift and one for ourselves because we liked it so much!
Perfect gift!
This was a gift- my brother LOVES Japaneese culture and cooking and this was perfect! Many of the recipes are not for beginners, though. Take note: you should feel somewhat comfortable in a kitchen before trying these recipes.
Great book
Been to Japan, this book definitely has all the recipes that tourists rage about over there. Gorgeous book too.
Great book of japanese cuisine!
It's a great book of japanese cuisine. Love the images and the easy to follow instructions.
Beautiful!
This cookbook is quite pleasing to the eye, and the stomach! The recipes are well written and easy to follow, as well as easy to adjust for more or less people.
Great purchase!
It’s great! Arrived in perfect condition. Excited to try some recipes!
Excellent recipes, but the book itself takes you to ...
Excellent recipes, but the book itself takes you to Tokyo and its myriad eating possibilities. It is nicely arrranged with helpful pictures of ingredients and cook ware as well as useful indices.
For anyone seriously interested in cooking Japanese food.
Tokyo Cult Recipes will interest both beginner and more advanced cooks who want to prepare true Japanese recipes. There are no difficult techniques. Everything is doable. Other than the SPECTACULAR photos, the most striking feature is the strong focus on authentic ingredients and authentic techniques. The author taught Japanese cooking and has been cooking Japanese food since she was a child. The recipes reflect this background. The dishes you would expect to be there are. And there are some fascinating surprises. The recipes have substance. There is an average of seven ingredients per recipe. Which isn't as important as the fact each recipe has what it needs to produce superior results. Some only have a few ingredients: how to make rice, dashi, some basic sauces, some bento components and how to make ice cream. But these don't need a ton of ingredients. In addition to all the Japanese favorites, the recipe highlights for me are: the stuffed cabbage, any of the gyoza, the chicken meatball hot pot, and the sōmen. There are many snipets of Tokyo culture that just makes this book perfect. I hope that a second book is being planned. Highly recommended.
fabulous if you are into Japanese food
So many great recipes in here. I've made a dozen of the recipes so far and they were all delicious, but the chashu pork is my favorite.
There are some great recipes in this book
There are some great recipes in this book, I own a rather large collection of Japanese cookbooks (in English and Japanese) and this one has become a new favorite. I often find myself reaching for it as a number of recipes have been loved by my wife and she often wants me to make them weekly now when meal planning. The shabu pork belly salad on chrysanthemum greens has one of the best salad dressings I've come across thus far in all my cookbooks...we make just the dressing alone sometimes its that good! The book is worth it just for that in my opinion.
Just Like Tokyo
Fantastic pictures, recipes, photos, and tips.
Five Stars
as advertised
I really love this book
I really love this book. There are a couple recipes that don't seem like they should have been included in the "Tokyo" theme... such as Spaghetti Napolitan... I mean, I get it, people in tokyo don't only eat rice and noodles and sushi. Sure. But why include an italian recipe? It just seems strange. Other than a few of those, the recipes are great!
All the basics and more
Great cookbook. It had a lot of recipes I was looking for and helped me with ingredients that I don't know what to do with.
Five Stars
Beautifully designed, easy to follow recipes.
A good starter book
I haven't tried them all yet but so far they are yummy and easy to make. It's full of good photos and is a great book to have for a lazy rainy day.
great read and great recipes
Great read with great recipes. I will get the book.
Wonderful book
I absolutely love this book! Very easy to navigate, delicious recipes and beautiful photographs.
Perfect Book
My wife love this book. It comes with traditional receipts and photos of the plates.
And the layout and pictures made the book even better!
I got it as a secret Santa gift for a coworker and she loves it! And the layout and pictures made the book even better!
So happy
I love this book. The pictures that they have in it are wonderful and all the recipes look tasty!
Great book
saw this book at one of the stores thought it would look good in my living room. Had looks of good receipes. I checked price and it was cheaper on Amazon. I didn't feel like returning for another.

Finally a book on ordinary Japanese cooking!
This is a beautiful book
I bought this as a gift for my son in law who loves to experiment in the kitchen. The recipes seem easy enough to follow and have a nice variety. But additionally this is a gorgeous book. Beautiful photography is mixed in. I believe he will love it.
Loved the recipes and the pictures
Loved the recipes and the pictures, I traveled there and it brought back a lot of memories, I wish I had someone cook these recipes for me. They all looked totally yummy.
Loved it!
This has so many amazing recipes! I love it!!

love this book! pretty with a lot of photos and nicely designed!
Very pretty book, with some good classic japanese recipes
Very pretty book, with some good classic japanese recipes. However, it seems more like an aesthetic book than a recipe book. I felt like more effort was put into the art than the recipes, but still very nice.

Good choices
Beautiful
Saw this beautiful recipe book in a Japanese bookstore and decided to order on Amazon, which offered for cheaper. My boyfriend bought it because he likes to cook... I bought it because I like looking at the beautiful photos, haha! (Warning: avoid at all costs when hungry and have no access to food)
damaged
the book is very nice but it came damaged due to poor packaging.

Gift for our daughter. Well organized.

Great coffee table book. Nice quality bound and printed pictures and recipes. They seem pretty easy for most people trying to make Japanese food.

not very cultish, just common recipes cooked her way...
Cult?
This cookbook is beautifully illustrated and the layout is easy to read and use in the kitchen. That being said, the recipes are much less cult than standard Japanese fare familiar to most Japanese expats who regret not having learned how to make the standard repertoire so lovingly prepared by their moms and grandmothers! Nothing bizarre or difficult to source, you will be able to easily reproduce most of the recipes in this book. When I feel industrious I will throw together two or three of the dishes therein to remind myself of my dear grandmother and cry into my bowl of ramen.
Good but somewhat lacking
Overall a good book, however it encourages the reader to buy and use prepackaged noodles in several dishes. I specficaly was looking for more authentic noodle recipies that, although time consusming, could be made on special ocasions. seems silly to go to the trouble of making Udon only to throw in packaed noodles.
Two Stars
Nice photos, but it doesn't tell all the right ingredients in some dishes.
Featured on YouTube and HAD TO OWN IT
So excited!! I just saw this cookbook featured on YouTube and I had to have it!! I am a fledgling Asian cook and my husband and I adore Japanese food. It's on the way!!!
Great book very hip
This is a great book, just the page on what type of miso to pair with other ingredients makes it worth it.
Great for a coffee table book, not so much as a cooking guide...
The book itself is beautiful! The photos are lovely and it feels well made, but the recipes are a bit lacking. Even though they are very simple and use few ingredients, the instructions are sometimes difficult to follow. I found myself reading through each a few times, just trying to understand which ingredients or step in the process the author was referring to. Ended up returning the product.
I dont understand the bad reviews, this book is beautiful
I dont understand the bad reviews, this book is beautiful! As someone learning to cook Japanese food, it keeps things simple, and Ive made a lot of the dishes and they come out perfectly. Also, the book itself is beautiful.
This book is pretty "meh". Good photography
This book is pretty "meh". Good photography, lots of color images, but the recipes are "whatever". They seem to be very short and maybe a little too easy, at the expense of the finished result. Of the 15 or so Japanese cookbooks I own, this is in the bottom five.
Boyfriend loves it!
I got this for my boyfriend since he recently got into Japanese cuisine. The cover and pictures are beautiful, and I find myself looking through it often when I'm in the kitchen. We tried one of the recipes, and it was delicious. Highly recommend!
Gorgeous, complete book
The cover is really gorgeous with details and foil on some parts. It’s overall very robust ! The books is really detailed and complete, and there’s a big amount in recipes in it.
Great cookbook!
I have always wanted to learn how to cook Japanese food and this is a great stepping stone into that cuisine. Directions are easy to follow and the pictures are helpful.
Authentic!
Be ready to encounter the authenic Japan within your home. Impress your loved one by hosting the Izakaya them dinner with few tricks learned.

This cookbook is worth it for the photography alone. The recipes are quite detailed too and I am enjoying them thoroughly.
Great book
Good book Recipe easily followed
Wouldn't recommend
Japanese cuisine is essentially beautiful, the book visually reflects this, and celebrates it. The recipes are essentially simple, and very approachable. If your technical capabilities are very basic, this book is for you. Please remember, before you buy ANY foreign cookbook, that foreign cuisine necessitates foreign ingredients. These ingredients are not always going to be readily available, easily substituted, or cheap if found. This book does not bend the knee to this idea of westernisation of recipes, you may find yourself disappointed if you cannot find some of the ingredients.
A Must-Buy
I love love love Japanese culture and food, so I was immediately attracted to this book; I wasn't disappointed! The cover is lovely and vibrant, with no loathsome dust jacket to get in your way. The recipes are easy to follow, well-explained, and written in an almost conversation-like way. The highlight of this book, however, is the many photographs - of Japanese food, of Tokyo streets, of markets, people; I really felt immersed. Will definitely be buying the other books in this series.
A MUST HAVE!!!!
If I could give any higher a rating I would. Given to my partner who wants to get into cooking and loves Japan, it was an amazing present. The information is incredible and very knowledgeable and helps with the Japanese spelling, pronunciation and history of foods.
A beautiful cookbook for the Japan lover!
Bought this book for a Christmas gift when it was half price, and it's well worth the price! Gorgeous hardback, with easy recipes neatly arranged by category, and glossy pages showing pictures of Japan. (I'm almost sad to give this away, but I'm sure my friend won't mind me borrowing it!)
Quite disappointing
Nice cover and pictures however I’m wondering if recipes have been read proofed. For instance the Dorayaki recipe is calling for 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda! That’s huge. I tried it and didn’t turn out well.

I absolutely adore this book. Would recommend to anyone who has a love for Japanese culture and cooking and for good quality coffee table books. Easy to follow recipes and photos are just perfect I can flick through again and again and not get bored

If you are a fan of Japanese cooking you will probably really like this. It's a good mix of different types of Japanese food, with a slightly western focus to it.

One of the best Japanese recipe books around.
Very authentic, with delicious easy to follow recipes. Best tsukune recipe I have found so far. My family was raving about the food I've made from this.
Disappointing, but understandable
Bought this after falling in love with the food in Tokyo. The selection here is rather touristy, and really really disappointing. The photography was fantastic though.
Tolle Rezepte
Not for a beginner or ANYONE in the UK away from a city with specialist shops!
The book is bigger and more comprehensive than expected but unfortunately it is full of ingredients which are almost impossible to source in small-town UK. Whilst there is some explanation of some of the Japanese condiments and ingredients etc, there isn't for all which makes it hard to even go into a shop and look for them as you don't even know what you are looking for. There are no process photos so a novice cook or someone unfamiliar with the terminology used will struggle to access these recipes. Definitely NOT for a beginner or an interested newbie. Very disappointing as I really hoped I would be able to try some Japanese cooking based on the reviews and the background of the author. Sadly not.
Halber Preis
Als englische Ebook fast halber Preis zur deutschen gebundenen Ausgabe. Schöne Fotos. Übersichtlich und gut strukturiert und sehr gute Rezepte.
Beautiful photography with unique and simple recipes! Love it!
I brought this as a present for my friend and decided to sneakily have a look before wrapping it up. I was amazed. Having lived in Japan before, I think cookbook captures great recipes and not the 'typical' ones we have heard of. Also, the design and layout of the book is beautiful, especially the photography. I would highly recommend getting this book and I'm going to purchase one myself too.
Best Japanese cookbook - and good for the single eater
I love this book. It has so many recipes for foods I wanted to cook but couldn't find straightforward recipes for. It's easy and interesting to read. And lots of the recipes are for or could be scaled down for one - which is good. The only downside is that I really want to buy so many of the plates/ bowls and I can't get them here - have to go to Japan
... is the third in this series and just as good as the other two---be daring and try it
