To Make Monsters out of girls
I purchased this book from Amazon to read. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟to make monsters out of girls by Amanda Lovelace. There is something so raw and soul cleansing I feel after reading a "Lovelace" book. As long as she keeps writing I will keep buying and reading. Yes it may seem a typical, cliche break up story boy meets girl, girl falls in love, yada, yada, but the way she puts words on paper they drip with true hatred, unconditional love and then rebuilding. The words hit home in a way no words other can. They are so dark and deep you can't help but feel new when you close the book. I am looking forward to reading To Drink Coffee With a Ghost this fall!
Amazing and Heartfelt!!!
Amanda Lovelace’s poetry is, like Amanda herself, beautiful and expressive! I’ve followed her since Princess and Witch, and I was so excited to preorder this new one! Although I wasn’t sure Monster could live up to Princess and Witch, Amanda did not disappoint. Like the other two books, I read it all in one sitting! In short, Amanda Lovelace and her poetry are both amazing and heartfelt. I would put all my faith into Amanda Lovelace and her poems, and I wholeheartedly believe you should buy this lovely book! :)
Lovely
Filled with words of love and hate. Sorrow and redemption. Pain and joy. Beautiful. It was lovely and beautiful And you should definitely pick it up. Im usually picky with poetry, most make me think the poet doesnt know what they are talking about they just want to sell books but Lovelace knows whats shes talking about and it’s beautiful.
Great Amanda Lovelace Collection
This is a great collection and if you’re drawn to Amanda’s style this will not disappoint. Here she takes some previously released material from wattpad and expanded it while also adding in some nicely placed illustrations from Munise Sertel to bring together a neat and concise collection. Overall it’s a great read.
Beautiful book, not my favorite of this authors though
I couldn’t really connect with this poetry collection like I have Lovelace’s other ones. Princess is my favorite out of all poetry books and this one mainly focuses on one relationship and all the poems ran together. It’s good, the illustrations are great and the outside is beautiful I just wasn’t thrilled with the inside.
Fine, not her best
As always, Lovelace's formatting and wording choices stun me, she makes each poem look like a work of art. This collection didn't resonate with me as her previous work has though. These poems felt shorter and perhaps not as emotionally deep. That doesn't mean they aren't good. There were a few that struck a chord with me. Overall this is a fine collection, just not to the caliber of her other work.
Amazing
I love this book! Its not a continuation of Princess & Witches but a part of a brand new series! I love the fact that it is hardcover and thats its illustrated. The poems are amazing and this book makes me feel loved and important after every read. Amanda, you did it again
She’s Back!
This is the writing that I missed in Amanda’s last collection. I devoured this book in an afternoon and am already ready to reread. Her passion speaks through the pages and it’s like I’m there, experiencing her story. I love it.
Lovelace writes masterpieces
I am a huge fan of Lovelace. She writes so many relatable and empowering books. I own them all
Okay
The poetry was powerful as always, And I love the author’s work... this one just didn’t click with me as well as The Princess Saves Herself in This One and The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One...

Good book
It arrived right on time and in a great condition. About the content of the book: in the beginning I was a little disappointed because I read other book of this author and it was really good, BUT in the end it all made sense and I was very impressed. Amanda Lovelace talks about subjects that some people are still afraid of, she’s very brave in this matter.
Another book by Lovelace, another round of crying by me
She made me cry in the bath again. I absolutely love her work and give it to people as gifts all the time.
Meh
I ove the artwork but the poetry is not so great
To make poetry out of a bad relationship

Beautiful & painful
Such a good, raw look at the effects of partner abuse. I love that she is realistic about the fact that everyone is human and makes mistakes - but no one asks o be abused. Beautiful collection of poems!
Beautiful
Amanda is by far my favorite poet. Her books are always stunning and this one is no exception. I read it in one sitting. Such a beautiful collection of poems!

5 Stars
I enjoyed it like the rest of her work.
Amanda's Best Collection!!!
To Make Monsters Out of Girls is Amanda's most vulnerable, heartbreaking, and beautiful collection to date. It takes the reader on a journey through a toxic relationship and her efforts to move on from it. It helped me to understand why people stayed in toxic relationships and how it isn't so easy to walk away. By the end, we are introduced to her "sun-heart" aka her spouse. This section was my favorite! (Side note--I think monsters is a great complement to her spouse's debut collection.) I had many favorite poems but the ones that stood out to me were: "red & wolf", ""the cycle", "my new love is here to ruin your day", "trust issues" and "the sun? she told me you are worthy". Besides the poetry, the book was also so beautifully arranged. I was very impressed with the illustrations, layout, and overall feel of the book.
Great poetry
Love Amanda Lovelace
Must have poetry
Amanda Lovelace is outstanding I loved her writing and can’t wait for the next part of this series.
Ok
Friend liked it as gift

This is a fabulous new collection of poetry by one of my favourites, Amanda Lovelace. This is going to be the first in the Things That H(a)unt Duology. If you loved Amanda's previous books then you will definitely like this one and this has awesome added illustrations which loosely connect with some of the poems in this book. I can definitely see myself going back to this book and looking at these beautiful illustrations again. This book is broken into three sections; Monster-Boy, Monster-Girl and Sun-Heart. So the book itself forms the same sort of story arc that a novel might, we see the girl, we see her go through some things and then we get a happy ending of sorts. I really like the fact that we have this kind of arc because I think that this is what makes Amanda's work so accessible to those of us who are newer to poetry but read lots of novels, they are very easy to follow. Some of my favourite poems in the book include 'The Question II and I'; 'Two Sentence Horror Story' and 'Don't Try to Waste Your Time Again'. The writing in this book is so beautiful, despite the fact that is covers serious issues and topics which may make people uncomfortable, it is always just wonderful to read and definitely fills me with hope. I did cry at a couple of these poems too, which is a first for me. The book does cover some topics which require care warnings including abuse, eating disorders, self-harm, alcohol, religion, death, gore, fire and blood. Overall I thought this was a great addition to my bookshelf and I am sure it will be a great addition to yours too!
Deeply moving and full of soul
Review also found on Booked J and Goodreads. Amanda Lovelace does it again with her latest collection. To Make Monsters Out of Girls is her most revealing offering yet and that's saying something, given Lovelace's knack for diving straight into the more intimate parts of her thoughts. This, of course, is what makes her work so beloved in spite of her newcomer status. Amanda Lovelace continues to make a name for herself and I have a feeling she's solidified her position as one of the most well-liked poets of our time. Armed with the same sort of raw, urgent honesty that her prior two collections showcased--Lovelace's voice has truly come into her own and once more she hits the nail on the head when it comes to the more sensitive topics of life. In To Make Monsters Out of Girls, she focuses on a dark spot in her life--during her time in the shadows, she slowly but surely finds her strength and is brought back into the life. She puts great emphasize on her past but an even greater one on her future. While all three of her collections focus deeply on the good and bad, there's something especially painful but striking about the honesty behind every line in To Make Monsters Out of Girls. I purchased the special edition from Target and I'm glad I did, because there was an added bonus to it. Anything extra in poetry is honestly a blessing and I so rarely use that term in a serious way. Like I do with most poetry collections, I began reading and highlighting my favourite passages--those moments where you just connect with a simple expression and thought, hey, I'm not alone. Lovelace's voice reaches out to her readers and it's admirable because she uses her platform to empower us all. I found myself highlighting most of the collection and finally gave up because, I knew that more of the collection would be highlighted than not. In short, this was an incredibly moving collection of prose and reminded me why I love poetry so much to begin with. I can't wait to see what Amanda Lovelace has up her sleeve for the future. One thing's for certain: readers cannot sleep on such a talent.
Those who can connect to her words will be able to treasure it
Her poems are easy to recognize and this was another excellent collection. It is true that the structure of the poems is simplistic and basically seems like hitting the space bar ever few words, but I personally think this simple style gives the words and message behind the poems even more power. Amanda Lovelace writes without fear and is fully open about her experience with abusive and toxic relationships in the past. She uses words to not only express feelings, but fight those monsters and free herself (and hopefully others) in the end. I've said it before, but these stories are very easy to relate to for anyone who has experienced a toxic relationship (or is still experiencing it) and will provide both comfort and and empowering message to let you know you are worthy and can beat that monster. It's not the style, but the words and the emotions behind those words that make To Make Monsters Out Of Girls into such a success for me. Her poetry isn't for everyone, but those who can connect to her words will be able to treasure it.
What a journey!
This book touched my heart in ways that I didn’t expect. Clear, concise recollection of a traumatized, yet not totally irredeemable childhood and the resonance of the same. I love that she was able to reconcile both the dark and light sides of the relationship with her mother and to go onto to thrive in her life. This is a happy ending that not all of us achieve, but I am happy that the author shared her experience with us.
A gorgeous collection about healing and growth
If you’re going through a break up or have been through one, you must read this collection of poetry. This collection has the power to help people heal from the wounds others have caused, and it also can nudge others to stand up for themselves when they are treated wrongly. I’m so proud of Amanda for speaking out about her past and her relationships, and I know it will help people feel seen in ways they have never felt before.
Amazing
Wow. Amazed once again by Lovelace’s beautiful writing. Heartbreaking. Many of the poems deal with abuse. As someone who has lived an abusive relationship, it was very relatable and beautiful to see how she took her abuse and grew from it. Her poems after meeting her spouse are beautiful, the way he changes her writing to something positive and full of light is amazing. You can feel the love and purity of her new relationship in the way she writes about it. Absolutely loved this book.
a darkly whimsical narrative of terror and hope
'to make monsters out of girls' is a darkly whimsical narrative of a person who, despite past abuse, is able to cultivate a self-love that blooms and welcome in a romantic-love that nurtures. she learns that there is intimacy in the world that heals instead of destroys, and conveys the importance of portraying mistreatment candidly so that others are validated in their own, messy chronicles. it’s so easy to look back at chapters of our lives and tell them with the hindsight bias we have now. i appreciate the way amanda thoughtfully inspects the monstrous relationship and acknowledges her own faults while still holding the abuser completely accountable. no one is perfect. but no one deserves cruel manipulation disguised as love. the vulnerability + honesty in this collection inspires me. amanda's brutal, unapologetic poetry makes me want to harness my own power and boldly declare my strength + my truth. i will be waiting impatiently until march for 'the mermaid's voice returns in this one'
This book is hurt and power all bound between 2 covers.
After waiting for what felt like forever, I was so stoked for this book to be released. Lucky for me, it fell on a pay day so I was able to go get the book, and it has far surpassed my expectations. This book is hurt and love all in one. It's power. It's healing. Amanda lovelace's books always make me feel some sort of strength I didn't know I had, and I am so overjoyed to feel that coming from a book. This book is light, and I cannot wait to read it again. With love, Lana
More Wonderful Poetry from Amanda Lovelace
4.5/5 stars Another brilliant collection of poetry from Amanda Lovelace. I didn't love it quite as much as I love the women are some kind of magic series, but I still did love it. These are the poems for those who are angry and hurting and healing and finding themselves. I'm looking forward to the sequel, which is supposed to be released later in 2019. * I received this book in a giveaway held by the author. I was under no obligation to review or promote it in any way.
don't bother
my book arrived with pages scratched, corners were bent and crushed as if someone slammed the ends on blacktop, the pages in the spine of the book started to fall out as well because the corners were so mistreated. will not buy again
The best yet!
This has been my favorite collection by Amanda Lovelace so far. Every word she writes just drips with raw, powerful beauty that leaves you speechless. Each poem flowed perfectly into the next, and the overall story she wove was heartbreaking, humbling, rejuvenating, and empowering all at once. Amanda Lovelace is a true poetic voice that all should hear. I absolutely adored this book and I can't wait for her next release!
keeps getting better and better!
this is my favorite book of amanda's so far! (which is confusing because I think I've said that about every book she writes). i've loved watching amanda's writing strengthen with each book. just when i think it can't get any better, it does.
Raw, Vulnerable, and Fierce
Amanda Lovelace has been one of my favorite poets since she first self published 'Princess.' Monsters didn't fail to impress either, it is such a beautiful, open, and raw collection of poetry. I 100% recommend this to anyone who is trying to heal and needs something they can relate to.
Incredible Author
This book was very raw and emotional, like peering into Amanda's mind and understanding the trauma behind the words. It's definitely worth the read. Though I have not been through what she's been through, it has given me some insight as to how one can be so hurt yet grow to become a powerful woman. I highly recommend this, as well as any other books by Amanda Lovelace, my personal favorite being The Princess Saves Herself In This One.
Book Is Great But Arrived Damaged
Love this author's books, but this one arrived scratched and banged up and wasn't giftable as it looked very used.
Amazing !
This was truly a book that was love laced, when I got the book after coming home from a 5 hour lecture/lab biology class, I could not help but start reading. It was like watching a really good movie and you couldn’t wait to see what happens. Tears and Laughters later I finished the book in one hour!! Lovelace is amazing with her words and can really pull you in as if your sitting on the sideline watching..well reading her life. Thank you for your words ❤️
amanda lovelace did that... again!
as usual like all of amanda lovelace's work this book was fantastic. worth the wait and worth the read. (team jess!!!). so beautiful and so deep and so dark and so enlightening and so riveting.
Beautiful
The art and cover is as phenomenal as the writing. This book, like all of Amanda’s books, was amazing. I love how she empowers people to love and trust themselves above all else and how she owns up to her past mistakes. (Also, she and Cyrus have the cutest relationship.)
Beautiful poems on hurt and healing
A collection of beautiful, raw poems that cover the themes of toxicity (of the self and others) and the healing that comes after. The author’s personal experiences are wonderfully intertwined with metaphors of various fairytale monsters.
Grab your crown and maybe a cup of coffee or tea🖤
Do not second guess anything and get this beautiful work of art! While you're at it and if you haven't already, get her princess collection. Best decision I've ever made.
Amanda Lovelace is amazing!
While I've never been much of a poetry person, Amanda Lovelace is amazing! She is so honest and open that I can actually relate to everything g she says!
My Sun-Heart was on fire. (In a good way!)
I got chills down my spine when I finished this book of poems. It was an emotional roller coaster for me. Lovelace’s choice of words is always captivating, in a way that you can either only read a few poems at a time or you have to finish them all at once. The illustrations also made the whole reading experience worth way more than 5 stars!
Beautiful Writing
I never liked poetry until I read Amanda Lovelace. Her poems are powerful, beautiful, and something I will read again and again.
AMAZING AS HELL!
As always Amanda Lovelace brings poetry back to life. Every poem I read from her has given me many eye openers. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. Related to to them all. I’ve enjoyed this book so much!!! I thank her for creating a master piece and can’t wait for her next one!!!
Pick Up This Book!!!
I picked up Amanda’s new poetry collection on her launch date and I couldn’t have been more happy. Her work is amazing and is always a breath of fresh air.
🧛🏻♂️ ⚰️ 🥀
Loved it! Just like all her other books
A must read!!!
This is another great edition to my shelves! Amanda Lovelace once again nails it with this book!
Buy now. Don't think about it.
I love Amanda Lovelace and every word she writes. I am a fan for life!
Amanda Lovelace is an amazing writer and her poetry is very enjoyable
I absolutely loved this book it was an excellent read
A Must Read!
I love this book so much!
If you’re looking for a life-changing read, you've found it.
This poetry collection focuses on the overall theme of toxic relationships and rebuilding yourself after ending a negative relationship. I will acknowledge that I’ve had very similar experiences, and therefore it was almost therapeutic to read the words in this book. I may have connected more strongly with this because of my own experiences, but I really think that anyone who has ever been in love can relate to Lovelace’s words in some way. The power behind every single line in the each poem is astounding. Amanda Lovelace held nothing back while creating this masterpiece, and as a result she created a strong, empowering, wonderful message to those of us who needed to hear it the most. In a world where everyone is afraid to say the wrong thing, Lovelace holds nothing back, and in the process created something incredible.
A Emotional Journey Through Abuse
As ever I've read a poetry series the wrong way round. I got an ARC of the second one and read it first and then bought this because I enjoyed the second one so much. "this is how I finally bury you" Firstly, the aesthetics of this book are beautiful. The art (by Munise Sertel) is gorgeous and really compliments the poetry. The magazine type pages are so different but very cool. The colour scheme (red, black and white) is also stunning. I always appreciate Amanda Lovelace for the trigger warnings at the beginning of all her books because it really helps readers who may need them. "sometimes no closure tells us more than the closure ever could" This book is split into three chapters (monster-boy, monster-girl, and sun-heart) and takes us on a journey through an abusive and controlling relationship. I think the 'monster-girl' chapter might even be a little hard on Amanda because a victim is a victim. There are no excuses for abuse whether you have done something to annoy the other person or not. But I can see that this book is a true account of what it is like to be in this type of relationship and the poetry sheds light on so many emotional issues and scars that come from these types of relationships (whether physical or emotional). "there's no such thing as deserving abuse" I really loved the last chapter which is about Amanda's husband and it leaves the book on such a lovely and positive note. She found true love which is really uplifting after reading about the previous abusive relationship. The book is full of sort form poetry and some longer pieces of prose. My favourite pieces are probably the three 'letters I never sent'. "if you start to keep score, can you still call it love?" Of course, this is by Amanda Lovelace to there isn't a capital letter in sight. I just don't feel like her writing is progressing from book to book. She writes like she wants and that's it. I just feel like she stuck in this really simplistic way of writing poetry that never gets any better so each book does feel the same. I did still enjoy this book overall.
Every poem resonates
I’m a big fan of Lovelace and I’m pretty sure I’ve read all of her books now. Some modern poets who grow to popularity via Instagram or Tumblr lack any real depth in their work. I’ve read so-called poems that are little more than random words jammed together. Lovelace manages to avoid this. The poems in this collection focus on being in abusive relationship. This is something a lot of people with have experience themselves or know someone who’s been in that situation. The themes explores resonate. The poems in To Make Monsters out Of Girls are raw and painful at times and quite astonishing. I enjoyed every word.
Average
"i’m the fairy tale everyone forgot about because the lesson wasn’t pure or hopeful enough. in this one, there are plenty of times when red becomes a little bit wolf after the beast comes for her with his snapping jaw too hard, too often." 3.5 stars. Not the best I’ve read from lovelace, but a solid collection with an interesting concept and beautiful illustrations.
