This valuable book provides a complete manual for the study and practice of Raja Yoga, the path of concentration and meditation. This new edition of these timeless teachings is a treasure to be read and referred to again and again by seekers treading the spiritual path. The classic Sutras (thought-threads), at least 4,000 years old, cover the yogic teachings on ethics, meditation, and physical postures, and provide directions for dealing with situations in daily life. The Sutras are presented here in the purest form, with the original Sanskrit and with translation, transliteration, and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the most respected and revered contemporary Yoga masters. In this classic context, Sri Swamiji offers practical advice based on his own experience for mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental and emotional harmony.

INCREDIBLE!!!

There are lots of religions that promise what the Sutras deliver, I was once involved in Scientology and spent shameful amounts of money and didn't get what I'm getting out of a book that cost me $10.00 (Kindle), if you are really interested in advancing spiritually and learning how to use your mind to its maximum potential GET THIS BOOK!!!!! Don't do Scientology or any other hack nonsense that wants to charge ridiculous sums of money and gets you nowhere, the Sutras date back over 4000 years and are the foundations of many religions and have retained their truth. So many other religious books (the Bible for one) have been so adulterated that you can't even be sure what you are reading, there are currently over 250 different versions of the Bible in circulation all changed to suit the needs and the message of MEN not GOD, I have read countless books and have studied almost every religion over my 50 years and this is by far the best thing I have ever seen. DON'T BOTHER WITH THE REST!! BUY THIS BOOK, USE IT EVERY DAY, AND PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!!!

I have several translations of Patanjali's yoga sutras - I like this better than some others because he actually includes the Sanskrit as well as his translation. None of the others I have do this. I just really like that I can see for myself what is being translated.

Didn’t enjoy reading it

This is the first interpretation of the yoga sutras of Patanjali that i read. It was recommended by a yoga teacher. I know the author was an eminence in spirituality, so i hope my review doesn’t offend anybody. As i read the sutras and each interpretation i felt some of them didn’t align with the others. Some things said in one sutra would contradict another sutra, some explanations felt antiquated while others didn’t feel honest. It was as if some interpretations said just what we wanted to hear and then as i read forward in some other part of the book another interpretation contradicted the previous one, again to sound nice.

One of finest books on Phisosphy

Great book to enhance your Mind and Body. I got interested in Meditation again after 15 years gap. I had a miraculous improvement in just 5 weeks where blood pressure and pulse rate all improved by 15 points. I have a marginal high blood pressure for few years. I am still taking medication. The blood pressure clock has been set back by 15 years in just 5 week. The best blood pressure reading I got today was in Cardiologist's office which was 100/70. Last time I saw that kind of blood pressure was 15 years ago. The acid test will be if I can have normal pressure in 6 months with out medication. My meditation / breathing exercises are based on knowledge gained from other sources. The breathing exercises are called Pranayama (Breathing) Exercises. One can find more about it from various sources. The true knowledge dates back to Patanjali - the original text dates back to approximately 2200 years ago. Interpretation of Patanjali Sutras has also been done by Harvard professor. His book contains 900 plus pages. This book should be read a few pages at a time and contemplate. There is high degree of correlation between mind, stress, body and its functions. It must start with your faith in a system like a mustered seed mentioned in Bible. If one wants to calm their mind - then it a step in the right direction. One need to understand attachment to things around us. Having all you can have may be OK - worrying about loosing them is a problem.

Highly Recommend

This came highly recommended by my yoga teachers as the most accessible entrance to understanding and learning the sutras. I agree - I love it, the energy of it is great, the descriptions and interpretations very meaningful.

A very important book for Yoga/Meditation. Easy to read but worthy of much study

A seminal text, worth studying for valuable insights into mediation/yoga. Each Sutra is a short statement which is followed by an explanation of its importance to the study of Yoga/Meditation. Swami Satchidananda (who opened the Woodstock Festival in 1969) did a very nice job translating this and I find it to be accessible and easy to read. I also purchased the pocket edition to keep in my yoga bag so if I have a break before a class, I can make productive use of my time.

An easy way to learn about yoga and beyond

This should be read by anyone looking to practice yoga or gain some serious insight in life. It's one of those books that you end up needing to put down to reflect on what you just read. Very cool. The Swami gave really good down to earth explanations of the sutras which I found to be the defining element that makes this book a winner.

All paths leading to the same destination

Unity, purity, kindness and service. These are the qualities and characteristics that underlie the teachings of all the great spiritual traditions. Yoga is at the essence of it all. We tend to have a conception of Yoga in Western society as adopting different postures, but that is only one leg of the bigger table that is Yoga. In the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali are shared timeless nuggets of wisdom that will take a lifetime to master. It is one thing to read this text and quite another to actually apply it and embody the teachings. Master your senses, be compassionate and dedicate yourself to the act of self-less service. Very simple premise but very difficult to actually practice this on a moment to moment basis. I am grateful to have come across this text and would recommend it to anyone on the spiritual path looking towards how to be who they really are in this plane of existence.

The author links a lot of the single lines of the Sutras into ideas about god and Jesus.

Book 2, # 38 -- "Brahmacarya pratistham viryalabah This sutra is translated as 'Absolute, god move with, remain with, continence, moderation, keeping the sense strong and calm - aligned with creative energy, upon having established vigor, strength, vital power, energy, gained, obtained.' Which for me brought to mind my boss trying to kill me with hand guns because I pointed out that he was murmuring endlessly in the office about hating women. But for Sri Swami Satchidananda it means to not have pre-marital sex or any kind of sexual relation out of wetlock. "By observing celibacy, we preserve not just physical energy alone but mental, moral, intellectual and, ultimately, spiritual energy as well," (page 131). This pits the author into alignment with anti-abortion people like Trump, in my opinion, while also providing the intellectual cannon fodder for older males to abuse and control the sex lives of younger people, against those younger people's will. But I think what irks me as unanswered is not whether or not creepy conservatives deal drugs at those who would disagree with the ideas of those like Satchidananda so that those who would dare to modernize look debilitated. Rather what remains unanswered is the translation of god. The author has defined Brahman as meaning god. Isvara as god (p 37). Tad/Om as god (p 44). As a part of a larger trend that white washes minds, the author likely is defining any masculine ideas as god and I did not know that yet. Worth reading just to dig into the propaganda that destroys pre-marital sex while oppressing women.

Beautifully translated. Easy to understand. Great explanation of how to use the book...not just a read, but a meditation and thought provoking tool.

Full Translation; Incomplete Commentary

A full translation with Sanskrit Devanagari, but with a complete commentary only on the first two sections. The commentary on the remaining two sections skips over many of the individual sutras. In these latter two sections, the author comments only on those sutras he deems “most useful for the understanding of yoga aspirants”, which is a pity, especially in the case of the fourth section, which deals with what is translated here as “Absoluteness”. If this had a full commentary I probably would have given it five stars.

Well written, sampled with many stories

There are many commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali written by various Swamiji and yoga practiceners. I found as many as 112 books in the market published as commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali. Most of them are mere translations. Some books are translations coupled with some asana postures. There are very few books stand out. Swami Satchidananda's book is one of them. Philosophy of Yoga can be dry for a cluttered mind. While his book is also more of a translation, he drives the theme of each verse/ sloka by telling a story, which makes the book interesting to read. While simplifying the explanation, he made sure that he drove the point to the reader.

Wisdom in a nutshell

This book is very helpful to change the modern living paradigm where we are bombarded with information based on material achievements. We are given whatever we need to become joyful in any given moment. What we need to understand is that our self is not the mind nor the body, they are only means for expressing ourselves and not the other way around.

Better options available

Obtuse and not well written. Also, a bit of a rip off since many of the sutras lack commentaries. The translation and commentary by Swami Prabhavananda is clear, helpful, and complete.

Great Book ! It’s very detailed and easy to understand !

Great read ! It Looked intimidating when I opened the cover but it was in fact all the detail that was very helpful. There are explanations and pronunciations etc. making the yoga sutras very easy to understand. If you are interested in the learning the yogas you have to have this book . I guarantee you will keep referring to it. I couldn’t put it down!

My Personal Bible

This book is just awesome. I purchased this while in my 200 hour yoga teacher training. It really does provide a genuine concept of all things yoga --- and the tricks of the mind.

Fantastic wisdom

Wow. What a book... Fantastic. Lots of useful wisdom, information. Many of the negative comments entered here are for another book of similar name. This one by Swami Satchidananda is just great.

Buy this book if you want to change your life!

This book has changed my life. Anyone wanting to live a yogic lifestyle needs to add this book to their practice.

Thorough and Meaningful

If you want to understand the path of mindfulness, this is one important reading to help you see the immensity of the path. The translations are VERY helpful and follow an easy-to-read approach to learning some deep material.

Yoga for life.

Such a wonderful experience of a book. This is for me a life changing book. It has helped me deepen my yoga practice. I am excited to go over it in yoga teacher training.

Many benefits of this 2000-year-old text

It was written by one of the greatest yogis of all time - the Sage Patanjali. He compiled together various yoga and meditation practices into a manual that is easy to understand. In total, it comprises around 196 short "Threads" (Sutras) or verses or aphorisms. These were originally written in the language of the ancient yogis, Sanskrit. These verses are divided into four chapters named Samadhi, Sadhana, Vibhuti, and Kaivalya. The author has diligently presented them in three ways. First is the verse in Sanskrit, written in ancient Indian characters. This is followed by the verse in English letters. This is followed by a word for word English translation. Lastly, the author elaborates on the verses. Following is a synopsis of each chapter. Samadhi. This refers to a state of pure bliss wherein one unites with the Supreme. Samadhi is the root to the Supreme. But the root to Samadhi is by quieting the mind. Hence, Patanjali begins with the definition of yoga: yogash-chitta-vrutti-nirodhaḥ which translates as "Yoga is the cessation of mental modifications." (Mental modifications refers to thoughts - explicit and subconscious.) Sadhana. This word means "practice" or "training." Patanjali describes Ashtanga Yoga which is a yoga practice and lifestyle that consists of eight facets or "limbs." He outlines the various procedures and requisites. Vibhuti. This word means "supernormal power" (or psi). Patanjali describes the extraordinary powers that arise through the disciplined practice of yoga and meditation. These powers include clairvoyance, telekinesis, and omniscience. He explains that they are not the real fruits of yoga, but only a byproduct. The real fruit is what follows. Kaivalya. Literally translated, it means "oneness", but it refers to spiritual liberation and blissful union with the Supreme. In short, here are the benefits of yoga and meditation: good health, supernormal powers, and blissful tranquility. Medical science has already proven the healthy rewards for one's mind and body. However, do supernormal powers really arise? Where is the evidence? The topic is not covered in this book. But new studies of several ancient yoga texts show that ancient yogis appeared to have extraordinary knowledge of our world. These findings comprise powerful evidence that the claims of Patanjali are not nonsense. Those who practice yoga and meditation certainly do achieve some powers of psi. Full disclosure: I'm a peer-reviewed researcher on connections between ancient yoga and modern scientific discoveries, as well as between ancient yoga and the Bible. ~ Sanjay C Patel, SanjayCPatel.com

A must read!

A must-read for anyone delving into the ideas of self-awareness or meditation, or interested in learning more about enlightenment and/or the practice of yoga. The Sutras themselves are hard to understand, BUT, Swami does an EXCELLENT job of decoding them and explaining them as to how we can utilize them in present day. After reading a few of them, I found myself referring back to some of Swami's stories/examples and saw how it really did apply. Highly recommended for the yogi and anyone getting started in yoga.

Highly Inspirational and Motivational

Recently going through some things and decided that I needed to change how I viewed the world and myself. This books is amazing. Got it on A Friday night, finished it Sunday morning. I have not come a cross a book that captured my attention as well as leaving a lasting impression on me. The book is divided into 4 parts, each detailing the sutras and how to implement them in your every day life. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to start the journey of changing themselves for the better.

5⭐️S. 💙🙏🏻💙

I truly believe hay this is he Best translation of the Yoga Sutras. I would recommend this version to Anyone interested in learning about the Yoga Sutras. I own this and have purchased for other as gifts.

This is the best book i read in the recent past

These "Sutras" are basically in Sanskrit and you can get the meanings in many websites. However the commentaries in this book are very easy to understand and the narration is quite riveting. My honest recommendation to whoever is seeking for the spiritual texts, this is a must and no religion background is needed. It certainly improves the perception of the life in simple and significant methods. Good luck to everyone.

The instructions to life!!

Great information on life!! The best book I have ever read!! Realizing that you are not the mind nor body, just the observer, is a great revelation!

The best version of this text

This is the most highly regarded version of this text. The translation and commentary are superior.

I Needed a More Direct Experience!

This was suggested to me as a way to learn to meditate. I found it too wordy and not getting down to brass tacks. I found another way to learn. I know Patanjali is a famous Indian guru, but he didn't speak to me.

Great Commentary

Great Commentary on Yoga Sutras. The first few pages were just fantastic. This books is more about the philosophy of Yoga than the actual practice. A must read for everyone looking for inner peace.

Must have Classic

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a classic that everyone must read. I have read this book any times and continue to read it weekly. It is a book to be studied, not just read once and left on the book shelf. There are so many spiritual secrets to how to live life in this book. When I first bought this book, I did not know the author nor the books history. After reading a chapter I knew I had found a gem. So I then did some research on the book and it's author I was so happy I had stumbled onto this book. This classic can never disappoint.

Excellent Interpretation of the Yoga Sutras

This is an excellent explanation of the Yoga Sutras in lay terms. Why can't all things be explained so clearly. Must have resource if you study yoga, or are a student of spirituality.

Excellent book

I am studying the yoga sutras with a teacher and wanted a book to go with it. This book is wonderful. The author makes complex ideas very clear through the use of stories and examples which I found both helpful and comfortable. It is written with warm and humor in addition to the obvious well-grounded familiarity with the concepts. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone studying the sutras of Patanjali.

This book will provide a better understanding of the yogic beliefs

I find it very informative to read of the beliefs and history of the Hindu, Buddhism and other religions. It helps me to remain open and accepting. I am satisfied with this purchase and look forward to other purchases of this type through Amazon. I especially like that this book shows the Ancient Sanskrit writing and defines the meanings. It is amazing to think this has been handed down through thousands of years.

Contemplative and transformative

The BEST book on the yoga sutras, Sri Swami Satchidananda gives great commentary on what Patanjali spoke to about life, much more than yoga on a mat, this book is a wonderful guide though our daily life. Pairs very nice with his commentary/translation of The Living Gita.

Very Well Written Book

This book is life changing. All the sutras are explained thoroughly with great examples and stories. It's a very well written book. I recommend everyone to read this book, even if they are not into yoga.

Needed for class, ready for resale

THE BOOK of books!

wonderful book. contemplate and it will delivery its wisdom!

An excellent foundation book for the yoga practitioner

An excellent foundation book for the yoga practitioner, and one of three which every yoga instructor recommends. This particular edition is a good one for the beginning serious student of yoga.

good book

a book full of wisdom but not hard to read. (beside sanskrit part) recommend!

Fundamentals of Yoga Philosophy

Recently I have enrolled into a Yoga Teacher Training program throught Live, Love, Teach Yoga Alliance group. As a part of the teacher training, students are required to read Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These are basically written codes of conducts that yoginis are supposed to live by. Just like Torah, Bible and Koran are important to Jewish, Christian and Muslim philosophy; yoga sutras of Patanjali are fundamentals of religious life of yogis. It is very helpful manual for anyone interested in yogi philosophy and religion. It helps reader better uinderstand self and learn how to avoid suffering in this world. I have purchased this book from Amazon marketplace. My only disappointment is with the seller. Book shipped quickly but is as not in "as new" condition. It had portions of the book with notations, underlingnings anf highlights. So if you are truly interested in yoga philosophy and wish to have this book handy for time to come, my recommendation would be to purchase new book directly from Amazon so it has no markings in it and that covers are crease free (unlike mine). I will use this book for stydying anyway and future reference, however, my intent is to have another "clean copy" on hand so most likely I will be buying another copy of this book soon.

It's like tiny shimmering missives dropped daily into the deep pools ...

It's like tiny shimmering missives dropped daily into the deep pools of your soul. They resonate there with such timeless truth as to guide you back to self. . . your True Self. I love reading them as they are as applicable now as when they were written anciently.

Good book

Bought it for YTT not much to say, good book

Fine Translation

This is a fine translation. It's a light-read and good. I also recommend the following translations after careful research: -The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: A New Edition, Translation, and Commentary by Edwin F. Bryant (faithful & lucid) - Yoga: Discipline of Freedom: The Yoga Sutra Attributed to Patanjali by Patanjali and Barbara Stoler Miller (level: beginner) If you are interested in authentic Vedic knowledge, you can look at my profile for hand-picked books.

Good Teaching, Confusing Sanskit

The teachings are good, but the sanskrit can make it a little confusing for me to understand and follow. I wonder if there's any significance in me knowing Sanskit, to understand the teachings.

A Compelling Exploration of the Sutras

The book, with its commentary, gives a thorough and detailed explanation of each of the Yoga Sutras, written by Patanjali in about 200 CE. Sutra gives us the word "sutures," or threads, and the commentaries help us understand how these threads are interwoven into the fabric of yoga, and into our daily lives. As a yoga teacher, and also going through training to be a Registered Yoga Teacher, I'm finding this book is a great resource.

Great book

I bought this as part of required reading or yoga teaching and I love it

Probably the most accessible/up-to-date version of the sutras.

I've read 3 versions/interpretations of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and this is by far has the clearest and most relatable commentary to those who were raised in a "western" society. I consider this as update of Vivekananda's "Raja Yoga".

A book of commentaries on the most important Yoga compendium of all time. The book is to be kept handy and reviewed on a constant basis. There is so much to add to this brief review of the work..... It has to be read, studied, inwardly digested, and re- read and studied some more. May we all gain from it ..... !

Enjoyable.

No one has a perfect translation of the Yoga Sutra. However, Swami's is a fun read, and easy to understand. It's a good place to start. It's not overly intellectual or scholarly like many translations are. He weaves in a lot of fun little stories.

SUPER AMAZING SPIRITUAL LEARNING BOOK

I am inclined towards spirituality and I basically bought this book for my "Bhagvat Geeta" class in my college. And after reading, I have no words. ! simple amazing. I love sachidanand's writings, content. I knew about patanjali's ashthang yog, but had never gone deeply enough. i m thankful to this book.

Philosophy of Yoga

One of the most important book for explaining the roots of the philosophy of yoga.

This book has a fantastic depth of wisdom and value

For anyone stuying yoga, or their own spiritual journey. This book has a fantastic depth of wisdom and value.

Five stars

In this book, Swami Satchidananda shows his perfect knowledge of yoga and meditation. His commentaries are pertient and very easy to understand. I recommend the book without hesitation to anyone involved in a spiritual quest!

Great Examples for a Beginner, Lacks Depth at the End

I have read seven different versions of commentaries on the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali often reading a few versions side by side to understand various perspectives. What made this version enjoyable to me is how Sri Swami Satchidananda offers so many practical, humorous, and accessible stories and insights to help you make sense of this ancient teaching on yoga (which is still so relevant today). The only reason it did not get five stars is the commentary pretty much drops off by Book Three (of the Four Books on the Yoga Sutras) and practically does not exist by Book Four. I was enjoying the commentary so much I wish it had continued. Still, it offers a good doorway into a complex subject by someone who knows and lives the teachings inside out.

Most enlightening

Love the analogies that help make profound ideas so easy to understand. This book has enlightened me the most. I recommend reading it first thing in the morning and right before bed. It really helps me stay present throughout the day and gives me a good night’s sleep.

Five Stars

Nice effort

A nice effort is made by the author to convert Yoga speak to plain English. At times his wording is a bit vague and his frequent use of terms causes one to repeatedly check the glossary in the back. Overall a useful read for those intrigued by this life style choice. I would recommend Rick Hanson's Buddha's Brain as a follow up or even as a preparation for this book.

Fascinating! Learning a lot every day.

Best translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Not only translation, but also interpretation. B.K.S. Iyengar's tranlation is excellent. Yet, Swami Satchidananda's explanations make this more accessible and easily understood by a layperson.

A Classic

Fantastic translation and commentary.

If you're interested in the 'real' Yoga, buy this. it will be your manual.

This is a wonderful book on the Sutras. Sri Swami Satchidananda's explanations are as full of value as much as Patanjali's Sutras are. It is a book to read through slowly, then integrate, go back to. You will always understand more and differently.

A book you can open to any page to read. A study, a practice in the most raw sense. Very nicely translated.

Written to understand each Yogic Sutra

I love this book. It beautifully breaks down what the meanings of each sutra is about. Done very well from someone who obviously lives what he is writing about.

Four Stars

Enjoyed very much. Felt like he has a sence of humor.

Lovely, lovely translation

Adored this book. Satchidananda gives a beautiful translation and offers a very accessible interpretation of the Sutras. Understand that this is a book of cannon and as such is subject to the attitudes of its interpreters - but Satchidananda's is one of inclusiveness and reverence. He comes from a long tradition of study but does not overwhelm the reader with information. Excellent translation, easy read, very informative & thought provoking - definitely worthwhile.

Some of the Swami's translations are a bit obscure. For Example, he refers to "mind modifications" instead of simply saying disturbances as in other translations. However, his explanations are very clear and modern in style - nothing surupy or sentimental, just straightforward commentary and helpful ideas as hoe to interpret the text. His writing style makes me want to explore some of his other books in the future.

The best short commentary on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika that I know of. I prefer the Bihar School of Yoga commentary, as does my wife. But that one is quite long and more than you want to carry around some times. This is a very good commentary when brevity is sought. Lots of wisdom inside.

this book is perfect!

Waslooking for a book that explained Hindu(Shiava) philosophy a bit more deeply, this book is perfect!

Solid and Strong

Best Yoga Sutras translation from what I’ve heard. I enjoyed it with Monday book readying group.

Required reading for all yogis!

I am reading this book as part of my yoga teacher training and it is amazing. Full of wisdom, insight and messages to guide you in realizing your true self. It is a must read for any yogi looking to deepen their practice!

Yoga Studies

My yoga book group recently read "Light On Life" by B.K.S. Iyengar and there were so many references to the Yoga Sutras that it seemed a natural progression to read them. The Sutras are like studying the Yoga Bible and the book has earned a place on my reference shelf of yoga books. Very readable and informative.

Connections

The Sutras. Ancient knowledge of the Sages returns us to origins. Powerful, seamless stitches to bring the seeker/finder to the Self. I have some differences of opinion as to the meanings and examples of some of the Sutras, but, after all, I am oriented to Western thought, and so differences, thought subtle, are to be expected. Some of Sri's examples are also too oblique for my understanding...maybe that is just me. The Sutras can be a guide through Life; they are very deep and also thorough in showing the depth of who we are, where we are going, and the Paths that can be taken.

The truth about yoga.

I had to read this for my yoga certification. I'm so glad I did. It goes way beyond yoga.

Advanced Yogi reading

One of the most advanced yoga books I have ever read. This book is not for the novice Yogi and should be read with plenty of time to absorb and implement.

excellent explanation of the Sutras

I don't have anything very eloquent to say except that I love this book, and I love Satchidananda. Reading his words, you feel like he's your old friend, or maybe your granddad imparting a few words of wisdom on you. I had been intimidated about reading the Yoga Sutras, but his explanations helped me understand and really brought them to life for me. I highly recommend this book and any of Satchidananda's writings.

The translation was easy to understand

I needed this book as I was working on my yoga teacher training course. It is an interesting read, often very thought-provoking. The translation was easy to understand.

Narrative explanations

I really enjoyed the explanations of the sutras in story format. It was easier for me to remember and much less dry. Maybe it is because these sutras were originally taken in short form or maybe it is because I am a white American lady, but the sutras themselves didn't make as much sense as when they were explained. I felt that the book used poignant examples without being overbearing. There are so many stories that can be used within my own life and with my students that I wouldn't have known about if it were not for the commentary in this book. It was quite a dense book to read from front to back (for my yoga teacher training) because there are so many complex, unfamiliar concepts, but when used as a daily reference, it is beautiful. It's a wonderful way to add intention behind my practice and really take in the meaning of yoga.

Good buy it is!

Good book if you want to know about patanjali yoga sutras

Open, unpretentious translation of the Sutras

This is one of my favorite interpretations of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by the yoga adept Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the Indian gurus who managed to live a life of integrity. If you actually want to understand the Sutras in a practical way, this is a good place to start.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali-Commentary by Swami Satchidananda

This is an excellent book. It gives the Sanskrit for each of the 200 sutras, then the English translation, followed by a comment by Swami Satchidananda. These comments are essential for helping make some of sutras more understandable. I would highly recommend this book.

Love this book

We are all connected. Love this book.

Bought for texts to use in composition and Not disappointed

This has all of Patanjali'a Yoga sutras with good commentary. I was not disappointed in that I found a one useful to set for music. Just the kind of thing I was looking for. And I hope to find more.

Love it

As advertised

Satchidananda's analysis of the Yoga Sutras

An excellent commentary on the Yoga Sutras for non-academics. Satchidananda's masterful command of English makes his commentary easily understandable for English speakers. Although there are more exhaustive commentaries available, this is the one to start with for those interested in understanding this yoga "bible."

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

I have other writings by this author. He makes texts that would normally be beyond reach for the westerner available and understandable. He gets on the level of whomever is reading his work. He has a gentle attitute toward every subject.

Great Explanations

Great explanation of the sutras

Great Read!

It is very insightful and has helped me in my understanding of my goal of reaching enlightenment. A great research tool, I recommend it, among other books to learn as much as you can. Not to mention it is an easy read, so if you are new to the Meditation and Sutras, this book puts it in easy to understand way so that readers of all stages in their learning process can wrap their heads around.

Excellent book

This is my first book about Sutras and I got it; now I understand “the eight limbs of Yoga” and what is Yoga all about.

Very good book. Take time to read it

A spiritual masterpiece translated by a spiritual master.

After I had completed reading the Yoga Sutra's, I thought I would read it another time through. There's a section in the book where Sri Swami Satchidananda says that instead of reading a book and tossing it aside, we should have just a few books to study, especially if one is on a spiritual quest. Not only did that stick with me but I have also chosen this book to help guide me through my spiritual quest. The knowledge in this book is timeless and anyone who is open to its wisdom will receive it's benefits.

As described and on time.

Just ok

I found this translation difficult to digest. While I appreciate the detailed translation of the Sanskrit, the final English sutra wasn't always very clear. This is probably good if you already have a basic understanding of the sutras and want more detail. As an introduction, I was left feeling somewhat in the dark.

this book is GREAT

Great book for understanding Yoga and its philosophy!

It's dense with material but very helpful. A lot of the things I'm reading give me "duh-moments" but it's good to review these things. If you like to read, this is a good book for you.

At times easier to comprehend than the Bible. Love the short stories that reflect the sutra/lesson.

At times easier to comprehend than the Bible although they each teach basically the same lessons. Treat others as you would want to be treated, release ego, attachment and live with love, joy & kindness to yourself and others. Love the short stories that reflect the sutra/lesson. To me, it seems easier to translate the lesson into modern day living. Namaste

A MUST have for the yogi who wants to learn more on the Sutras

Great resource for yoga enthusiasts

This is a great resource for those seeking to understand the underpinnings of modern yoga and the Sanskrit names of the asanas and the pronunciation of those Sanskrit names. I think the thoughtful interpretations and examples described in the text provide outstanding context to the true nature of the goals, benefits and complexities of yoga practice.

Explanation and clarification

I was looking for clear explanation and this book delivered. The many uses for Meditation practice in today's fast paced world really gives one hope in dealing with life stress issues.

Generally speaking I found the book to be very enlightening.

Most of the commentaries were understandable and helpful. They expanded on the sutras which were very brief and needed explanation. The author provided those explanations. Being a Christian rather than a Hindu or Bhudist, some of the material was questionable in my "western" mind. I found the glossary to be indispensable.

I like some parts of this book tremendously(this book is part of our YTT). However I think Indian Gurus must refrain from talking about Jesus or Christianity since they reflect their lack of knowledge when they do so. I also don't like when Ishvara is translated as God and other such translations of Sanskrit non translatables. But who am I to say? Till we get a more "Indian" translation of our works (either by Indians or non - Indians(note that many non-Indians are utterly at home with Indian thought), we must live with such translations.
