A beautiful and informative biography

This is a beautifully written and illustrated biography of an incredible woman. The author skillfully presents the truths of Harriet’s difficult life without glossing over or minimizing the history. My five year old was fascinated, and I learned quite a bit too. I highly recommend this book!!

Interesting and informative book for school age children

After reading an overview book about Harriet Tubman, the 5year old and the adults in our household wanted to learn more. This book is much more thorough and is quite interesting. As it is geared toward slightly older readers, we are doing a chapter at a time for the 5 year old. I consider this a successful purchase.

A delightful biography about a young leader.

Any young reader willI enjoyed reading this book about a courageous young woman named Harriet Tubman. I feel adults can also learn some facts from reading this book. The author keep your attention by asking questions as you reading the story. The glossary also will help anyone look up answers easily if they miss a fact and need the information quickly. The book is a wonderful read for anyone.

Strong Woman, great intro to Harriet

These are the best books. My 8-year old and I can't get enough. With libraries closed, we are purchasing all of them.

Great for Your Young Reader

This book is not what I expected. I wanted biography-style info about Harriet Tubman to read to my children, but this book assumes the reader doesn’t even know what slavery is. This is not the case for our family, so I was disappointed in how the material was presented and organized - at first. But once I read through it, I came to appreciate how the author pulled together historical information at a children’s reading level and the illustrations keep a child’s attention. I recommend letting your child read out loud to your family, rather than reading it to them yourself, like I did. It will definitely spark good conversation and be a great history lesson for the whole family.

Engaging, real, and inspiring

I bought this because Harriet Tubman was a legit super hero and I was peeved they didn’t mention her during Black history month at my daughter’s school. I had to edit some of the language as it gives some descriptions of the physical abuse she endured while enslaved which can be a lot for little kids to hear. My daughter is 6 and was in awe of the bad-@ssery of Harriet’s life. I love how it pulls no punches on the story. It helped open up conversations on race and equality in today’s society as well. My daughter went to school after to tell everyone how awesome Harriet Tubman was, so mission complete.

Well written biography...poor binding

It's really too bad this book is bound so poorly. I bought it to read to my grandchildren because it is black history month. I made it to page eleven when the page simply came out as if it was stuffed in as an after-thought. As we progressed, more pages came out, all with a perfectly cut edge. The only remedy is to glue or tape them back in. My grandchildren love to read so this book is not going to last long. I would love a replacement, but I read another review saying their copy did the same thing. I would also like to purchase more from this author, but the poor binding tells me not to.

Great series!

My Level 2 reader loves these books (we have 4-5). The chapters are the perfect length to hold his interest and the drawings capture his attention. We also love the extras along the way and the quiz at the end. Great series!

Book pages falling out!

This book is not put together well! We did not read it immediately and now the return window has closed. Pages are just falling out. Some of them are not part of the binding. I turn a page and I end up with a separate page in my hand! It is so disappointing. You may want to wait for a new printing.

Great book

I got this book for my daughter and she is very engaged with it. She's learned a lot and continues to talk about it. Highly recommended for young readers.

Fan favorite!

My 9-year-old is in love with this book and is on his second time reading it so far! it does a great job explaining Harriet's life and in a way where a 5 and 9-year-old can understand!

Wanted to like but...

Too word-y / like a chapter book for my 5 & 7 year old. They do better with snippets of facts etc. content is great just not a good fit for my avid readers.

Easy to read

Very well written and easy to read. My daughter read it out in a couple days. I loved the opportinity for recap at the end.

great

great read

Words great for granddaughter

Good

From Minty to Moses

Great example of scholarship made accessible to all ages.

My 7 year old loved this book

Great book for an avid 7 year old reader. Spurred a lot of great conversations!

Black History

I purchased this book for my niece for Black History Month. She was excited to receive the book.

Works for Older Children Too

I am impressed by this biography of Harriet Tubman which acts as an introduction to the topic of slavery in what we now call the USA and includes the Nat Turner uprising, the Underground Railroad and the freeing of slaves and leading toward the Suffrage Movement. These topics are covered pretty thoroughly these are topics that I had to teach my eighth graders In my English Language Arts class this year, they did not know this information, so I am a bit surprised that this is aimed for ages 6-8. My point is you could actually use this with older students especially English language learners. I appreciate the bold font on the glossary words and the glossary at the back. I like the side bars which ask the reader to ponder these questions and apply some of these issues to their personal life, this allows for making personal connections to text. I like the maps throughout that show locations being discussed on that page. The timelines are another visual that helps children learn. There are two pages of multiple-choice quiz questions at the end which are concrete. The overall tone of the book is Harriet Tubman as a hero first for freedom for slaves and then working toward all women’s right to vote. It also mentions that she opened what we now call a nursing home for the elderly and but she advocated for equal access to healthcare for African-Americans. I never knew those things. Rating 5 stars = Love It.

A Nice Mini Bio of Harriet Tubman

I know some basics about Harriet Tubman, but if you are looking for little intro biography on her, then I recommend picking up a copy of, The Story Of Harriet Tubman. This short biography gives a nice overview of Harriet’s life from birth to death. I had no idea her family nickname for her was Minty, but once she escaped to freedom she changed her name to Harriet. I never knew she was married prior to helping with the Underground Railroad, but then down the line her husband remarried since he didn’t leave with her, so she ended up remarrying. In Harriet’s later years she opened up a home for the elderly and poor. This book brought her to life in a fascinating way. This book features Jump In The Think Tank, a side blurb that gives you a topic within the story to think about regarding your own life and how you may be able to relate to Harriet. Also, has the When feature which provides a timeline of events to see where you are at in the story. There is also, a Myth & Fact section to help you determine what is true. I like that bigger vocabulary words are bolded and of course there’s a nice glossary at the back to help know what those words mean. I received my complimentary copy of The Story Of Harriet Tubman by Christine Platt from Rockridge Press, care of Callisto Publisher’s Club. The views are mine and of my own choice. This Biography for young readers inspires me to go read an in-depth biography of Harriet Tubman.

Beautiful in every way, fantastic book!

I very rarely give 5 stars to an item. There is almost always something that can be improved upon in every way. But this book really hits the sweet spot. My oldest daughter LOVES Harriet Tubman. She is now 13 but she has done several projects, presentations, and even dressed up as her for the school "wax museum" so I knew this book would be a hit. When I was offered it all I knew was the cover . . . and when it came I was disappointed as it is so far below her and her 10 year old sisters' reading level. My daughter didn't miss a beat, however, as soon as the book arrived she scooped it up and put her youngest siblings (5 and 6) on the couch with her to read. This book has had several readings since, and has kept a public spot on the kitchen table for discussion. This book is well made -- it has a thick cardstock paperback cover with matte artwork. The pages inside are thick and the binding is strong. The type chosen is clear to read and printed in a size that it can be held back and read to a small gathering of children. When the type is crossing colors text boxes or artwork, it is in an appropriate color to make it easy to read (black or white) The artwork is attractive and engaging. I only wish the one real life photo of Harriet Tubman had been printed larger -- it is a measly inch and a half tall. The text of the book is engaging and enlightening. The book covers her birth and early life in slavery, events that affected her (like the Nat Turner rebellion) how she became a conductor in the Underground Railroad, the lengths she took for her family, her appointment as a Commander of Intelligence Operations for the Union Army's Department of the South, her management of a boardinghouse and home for the poor. The only part that did not feel like it has coverage was her death -- a simple statement that she died without any perspective. Perhaps because the audience is emerging readers they decided to minimize it, however that seems silly given the inclusion of slavery and physical abuse. This book has a lot of factual data to keep it from being just another interesting story. Graphs and charts to help understand the historical facts. A timeline is broken up across the book and encompasses when the first slaves arrived in America to Harriet Tubman's death. Her family tree as we know it. Maps of where she lived and where she traveled. Myths vs Facts. Questions ("Jump in the Think Tank") to spurn discussion and consideration of what you would do. A quiz in the back to test your understanding and a section on the impact she has had in our modern world, although that too seemed a bit thin. A flushed out glossary and information about the author and illustrator are the last sections. My daughter has gushed that she wishes she had this book when she was younger, and she is thrilled to have it to share with her siblings. A real nice read to expand any young lover or historical non fiction's library!

A well written basic kid’s biography of Tubman

Introducing young kids to the hard reality of America’s sad racial history is a tough thing to do effectively. It’s a complex topic and one young kids will have a lot of questions about. As a parent attempting to introduce my child to the topic during these turbulent times, I really could not have asked for a better book for my daughter to read than this biography of Harriett Tubman. The book itself is written at about a second or third grade level with approachable language while also explaining many of the more complex topics it introduces, such as slavery, how it worked and affected those in bondage. The writing is really pretty good, and on point for the age level, I think. It makes Tubman approachable for young readers while also being an interesting read. It doesn’t make the mistake of going into too much depth, but does a pretty good job of explaining enough background information so a young reader will understand why Tubman sought freedom and why she worked so hard to help others. Other aspects of the book to note are a Glossary of terms at the back of the book. Through the book, bold faced terms and words can be looked up in the Glossary for a definition if a child doesn’t know what the term means. It also has a quiz section where kids can test what they learned, and a couple pages of questions to help kids think about the context of what they’ve read. I also note that it has a bibliography page, which I really like because I believe that even children's nonfiction books should have them. Kids should learn early on that sourcing your work is important. Kudos to Author Christine Platt. This is a well done non-fiction children's book. Bottom Line: This biography of Harriett Tubman provides a good overview of an heroic and inspiring African American historic figure and the world she lived in while not reaching beyond the targeted age group’s ability to understand the concepts presented. It provides plenty of tools for parents and educators to use while discussing the topic with their kids and has great illustrations that compliment the text well.

Terrific Resource for Young Readers

"Stories about Dreamers JUST LIKE YOU," the back cover promises. And Harriet Tubman had big dreams and with fearless courage changed her life and the lives of over 300 other enslaved persons over ten years. And she never lost a passenger on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Tubman became a spy. Concerned for the indigent and homeless former slaves, she created a home. And she worked to secure voting rights for women. Who would have imagined that an enslaved, illiterate field hand could make such a dramatic impact? The Story of Harriet Tubman by Christine Platt relates Tubman's dramatic and inspirational story with learning aids including a glossary, quiz questions, timelines, and discussion questions. Platt does not sugar-coat the horror of Harriet's life as a slave. Readers read that she was beaten and nearly died and experienced 'sleeping spells' and visions after she recovered. "How will her courageous spirit inspire you?" the back cover asks. And that is the purpose of the biography. One may be on the lowest rung of the social ladder, seemingly without power or control over one's one life, but with vision and commitment, sometimes one does the impossible. Colorful illustrations by Lois Lora bring the text to life. I received a free book through Callisto Publisher's Club in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

Excellent children’s book on an abolitionist hero

The recent movie Harriet brought the famed abolitionist to life for many people, but it was hardly a film for children. This book lays out the facts of Harriet Tubman’s life in a way that youngsters can understand, without sugar-coating the injustice of slavery. The story covers her whole life, from childhood and young adulthood as a slave, to an escapee and then a hero who risks her life time after time to bring more slaves from the South to freedom. It also covers her important work during the Civil War and her work to aid others after the war. The book is written in a simple, straightforward fashion, and while it doesn’t gloss over some of the tougher parts of Harriet’s story, it doesn’t dwell on them either. Throughout the book, certain words are highlighted in boldface type as words that children may need to have explained — words such as privileges, abolish and indigent. At the back of the book is a quiz on the content, and questions for discussion. The colorful illustrations of Harriet and the world she lived in add interest to the story. Altogether, this is a good book for beginning readers, with a topic that will make them think.

I wish this book was around when I was in school!

This is another solid installment in Rockridge Press's Biography for New Readers series. Like the other books in the series, this book includes a glossary for unfamiliar terms, eye-catching illustrations, a timeline throughout to reinforce order of key events in the life of Harriet Tubman and the United States, and some "Think Tank" questions to encourage engagement with the text. The content is excellent. I learned quite a bit about Harriet Tubman beyond the very basic lore from my own elementary school days over two decades ago. Platt did a phenomenal job of explaining Tubman's early life and accomplishments as a hero and activist in a way that should be digestible to young minds. Comparing to others in this series however, I found myself disappointed with the quantity and frankly the quality of the "Think Tank" questions peppering the text. I think there was some missed opportunity there to connect the story of Tubman's life for today's children. Overall, solid 4 stars. Excellent content, just fell a bit short when looking at the "extras" in the series. Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Beautiful and important read

Like others in this series, this book is beautiful. Moreso, it’s such an important read. As a white woman, I have no idea how to talk about race to my children, but I understand it’s a conversation we have to have at some point. We received this book from the publisher right after Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday. My first grader had talked with her class about him, and I was excited to share this with her, another pioneer in black history, but from a different time. After reading this book (which is FULL of information, and enough to satisfy all children who aren’t mine, haha) we looked up other figures in black history and stumbled upon Henry Box Black. This man. He shipped himself in a box to a free state to gain his freedom. Do you believe that? I shudder to think of the horrors he must have faced to see that as his best path away from the life he was living. Harriet Tubman is an important figure in our country’s past, and I’m glad we have this book now to talk about her.

Ton of educational and interesting info, beautiful artwork

This is a very informative book. As an adult I learned a lot looking through it. Much more info than your average textbook. This will be great for a child to read to learn, and also to do projects and essays with. There are unique and beautiful illustrations, thinking questions throughout, timelines, maps, family trees, real photos, a test with answer key, so much information about her childhood and family, laws, details about her journey, life after slavery and the war, and I'm glad they shared a little information about the cruelty some slaves faced that a lot of children's books would probably shy away from. It shares some violence but isn't gory or very detailed at all. This is something I want to have for homeschooling for years to come. The font is large. It is quality paperback. Easy to understand. Words are easy to read and there is a glossary of new terms in the back. I recommend.

Freedom Train - Next Stop Canada

I have always loved biographies and I also love sharing biographies with young readers. This is an outstanding series of extraordinary caliber. The illustrations make a good thing even better. Harriet Tubman, (1822 - 1913) nicknamed "Moses" was famous for her 13 trips into the deep south to free some 70 slaves. Tubman, herself born a slave was originally named Araminta "Minty" Ross. She survived atrocious conditions within the atrocious institution of slavery. More than once she was nearly beaten to death. Some major plus points in this book are the maps, glossary and timeline so readers can follow the Underground Railroad and the issues of the day. The spiritual "Free At Last" and the 1968 classic "People Got to Be Free" by the Young Rascals underscores this book.

A Groundbreaking Biography of a Magnificent Woman

All I can say is that I am IN LOVE with this biography! The biography is written for children, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult. The illustrations are so lovely, and the author doesn't talk down to their audience. Harriet Tubman is such an important American figure, and I am overjoyed to find a children's biography that does her justice. This book makes an excellent gift for any child or young adult who loves to read and learn. But what I loved most about this book was that it made learning fun and unique, and I think that it is a must-have for any classroom or setting where children are present. Thank you so much to the author for your beautiful work! *I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

A super book about an amazing woman historical figure!

The story of Harriet Tubman is a wonderful biography for novice readers. Chocked full of content that can and should prompt interesting discussions, I would like to see this book in schools, libraries and shelves of homes! As an educator, this book offers a lot of great built in lessons. It includes highlighted targeted vocabulary with a glossary, a lesson about slavery and much about social (in)justice. The illustrations support the story and lessons woven neatly by the author, Christine Platt. It came as no surprise that Platt was a lawyer! The sweetest part of this book is the dedication, to the subject, Harriet, her sister and children. I received this book from the publisher, however, the review is of my own opinion.

Great way for early readers to learn about Harriet Tubman....

We've gotten the chance to try two different books from this series. In addition to this one, we have the George Washington one, too. Both are written by different authors and illustrated by different illustrators, but they have the same style to them. While they're great for my new readers, I read through them for myself, too. I still prefer learning about people through children's books, as opposed to those written for adults. They each have timelines throughout to help keep track of how many years had passed between the events talked about. I like the "Myth & Fact" feature throughout the books, too. In the back, there's a quiz, glossary, and discussion/journal questions. The illustrations add visual appeal. We like them and hope to read more in the series.

Important woman to know about.

Another book in the series of famous people for early readers. Nicely done, with a quiz at the end. All concepts are explained, and all myths about slavery are discussed. Kids can learn about Harriet, and what she did to become famous, as a conductor on the Underground railroad. Each part of her life is short, but is told to drive home a message, such as how she was beaten by her master, and what she did once the civil war was over. It seems odd that some of the myths might be believed by kids reading the book, such as the myth that people willingly came to American to be slaves. Well done, and continue to recommend this series. Thanks to Callisto Publishers Club for making this book available for an honest review.

Good placement and little quips and quotes throughout

I really, really wish Amazon would turn the ability to submit photos back on. I took several pictures of how well-designed the various pages are. This book reads really well for a young reader. This isn't your typical chapter book, this is well illustrated in different creative ways, with little "quips" and other nuggets of information in colored panels on various pages. There's not a boring square/rectangle of a picture, rather, the words on the page are designed around various pictures/photos. This kept the attention of my 6 and 8 year old. I think both are advanced readers, especially the 6 year old in kindergarten, so I think this is great for any advanced kinder-reader or at least 1st grader reader and above.

Great Book

This book offers a fantastic account of a fantastic woman during a not so fantastic point in our history. It is incredibly well written and offers insight into the life and struggles of Harriet Tubman. I personally became enthralled from the moment I received it and did not put it down until I had read it from cover to cover. It is written in a way that is easy for children to understand while also appealing to any audience. The illustrations were lovely and supported the story well. I am so glad that I ordered this book and it will make a wonderful addition to any classroom or home library. I highly recommend!

Wonderful book for young readers!

I am so enjoying this series of books for young readers! We've read quite a few and they are all great! This story features Harriet Tubman, a personal favorite of mine. Her story is so powerful and one that everyone should learn about. Born into slavery, she escapes and becomes a prominent figure for the underground railroad, helping so many slaves escape to freedom. This series adds a myths and facts section, maps, and a historical timeline! It's a well-written series and wonderful for children. I was provided an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Beautifully illustrated biography

I love this book- it is so visually appealing and informative. Filled with amazing illustrations, maps, timelines, and several photographs, any elementary aged child would find this book easy to read and hard to put down. Throughout the book, there are thought-provoking questions which invite the reader to really put yourself in Harriet Tubman's shoes, and shows a child just how courageous she was. I also liked the several "myth vs. fact" sections that correct several false pieces of information children may have heard throughout their lives. At the end, there is also a quiz and a glossary. HIGHLY recommended, for all ages!

An enjoyable Read

I thought this book was an enjoyable read. It is perfectly formatted for young readers and easy to understand. Along with the other books I have received in this series I really liked the "myth & facts" and the "jump in the think tank" questions scattered thoughout. The questions that finish up the book allowed me to see that I paid attention when reading. I also appreciated the glossary, so often when my kids have questions about a word meaning, my explanation is too detailed and confuses them more, these were perfect. I received this book free from the publisher.

Engaging Beginner Biography

The Story of Harriet Tubman: A Biography Book for New Readers by author Christine Platt, and illustrator Loris Lora is an engaging, beginner biography for lower elementary-aged children. This is the second title I have read in this series of biographies for new readers. I like how the book is arranged in chronological order with the help of timelines. It features interesting facts about Harriet Tubman’s life, a glossary, and even a quiz and discussion extensions. The author does a great job of showing Ms. Tubman’s courage, and unending commitment to freedom. This book will help readers understand why Harriet Tubman is one of the most celebrated figures in women’s and American history.

In THE STORY OF HARRIET TUBMAN we get a look at the woman behind the work

This book might be intended for a young audience, but I as a 44 year old got so much from it. We're able to get a look at Harriet Tubman the woman: her upbringing, the work she did and what made her want better for herself and those around her. We see her selflessness, and her willing to take risks to see that others could have a better life. I also love how the author Christine Platt gives us a look at fact versus fiction about Tubman and the life she lived. She did so much good, and though she wasn't able to save everyone she made a difference. Let that be our mantra: to do what we can while we can for ourselves and others.

Great bio of Harriet Tubman

Like everyone else, we are currently homeschooling because of the pandemic, and this is a nice addition to our home library. This a well-written bio of Harriet Tubman and even though I knew a lot about her before, I felt I learned something from this. It does a good job of describing the conditions of enslaved people and has helpful questions that get young readers to think like, "How would you feel if your loved ones were property?" My 10 year old enjoyed this. I look forward to other bios in this series.

~~ This is a woman who truly helped change the course of history in a beneficial way. ~~

Who was Araminta Rose? Harriet Tubman! Born into slavery, Minty started work at the age of 5. That didn't stop her being determined from a very young age to free herself and her family. What happened when Minty stole a sugar cube? When the Fugitive Slave Law came into effect where did Harriet have to take/lead people? This book with its Myth and Fact boxes, colorful timelines and so much more deserves a place in everyone's library. Written for the independent reader it is suitable for the older child who wants to learn about Harriet. EXCELLENT! I was provided a copy of the book by the publisher. Thanks, Liz

Early reader fun and informative.

I have grand children learning to read, this is a good early reader but not for the very beginner reader perhaps first grade level. Not knowing much about Harriet Tubman I found it very informative. It will give young children a good starting point to learn history in a fun and engaging way. I received a preview copy from the publisher and I am under no obligation to review this book.

The Underground Heroine-Harriet Tubman

Loved the book! The book is well written and will keep children entertained as they learn about the history of one of America’s courageous women, Harriet Tubman. I love how it has new vocabulary words highlighted, timelines to help the biography to flow, jump in the tank to allow children to connect and process their reading, and a glossary and self check at the end. The book is the right length to keep children and adults engaged. Christine Platt did a wonderful job bringing Harriet Tubman to life for her readers. Thank you to Callisto Publisher’s Club for allowing me to review this great book.

Great Kids Read

Harriet Tubman was an important person to read about. This book goes through the tough life Tubman went through. From her marriage, to her escape, and movement this book shares with children all the important information they need. This book is easy to read and has some fun interactive questions along the way. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and were in no way influenced by outside sources.

Great Book

A nice Biography for new readers by Christine Platt. This book has lots of great information and things I never new. My 6 year old niece enjoyed this book. Easy to read with great facts. Love the glossary section because it helps young readers with words they may not understand. Great little quiz section to see what you learned from the book. Introduces you to Harriet from a child to her adulthood. I received a review copy from the publisher for my honest review.

Nice introductory history

This is a nice book to introduce kids to the story of Harriet Tubman. It's aimed at kids in 1st-3rd grades. I'm not a fan of the illustrations but the book overall has a nice way of presenting the information and making kids wants to engage with a historical topic. I do think the information is a bit watered down even for the lower age groups. It's always hard to get a good level with the lower elementary so I give it full marks on the subject and facts.

Another Excellent Biography

My second-grade son has read a number of the historical biographies from this publisher. They have all been excellent. This one is no exception. The writing is easily accessible, and the story is engaging and does an excellent job teaching about Harriett Tubman's life and contributions. Particularly at a time when we are all trying to home-school this book checks many boxes-- American history, reading comprehension, critical thinking. I strongly recommend.

Fantastic Biography Book for Elementary Readers

This biography book about the life and contributions of Harriet Tubman would make a fantastic addition to your home library, and/or a classroom library. I read this book with my two elementary aged children (pre-k and third grade) and they both learned a lot. I love that Harriet's story gives an example to my children of a real-life woman who displayed great courage, and empathy despite terrible circumstances. The illustrations are nicely done and a short multiple choice question is included at the end of the book. Great book! The publisher sent me a free copy of this book. My critique is my honest opinion of the book.

Honest and Well-worded

I loved The Story of Harriet Tubman: A Biography for New Readers. While I have heard portions of her story repeatedly, I was able to learn a great deal of new information with this read. I thought the story was well-written and carefully worded to tell the real story of enslaved people and how they were treated while still being appropriate for young readers. I enjoyed learning about her early years and family life as well as journey along the Underground Railroad. My review is based on a free copy from the publisher.

I like these books!

Well this was a timely book. I’ve been trying to incorporate more non-fiction into our growing collection of books... especially books about different races and cultures. I like how this book is set up. Almost like a small chapter book. It had good information and vivid illustrations. My son (age 7) found it very interesting. He had never heard of Harriet Tubman before so it was nice to have a teaching moment together as he read.

The content and illustrations are wonderful!

Last year I visited the Harriet Tubman museum and her last home of residence. It was a great experience. This little biography reminded me of much that I learned. However, I'm more excited about using it with my grandchildren - the story and illustrations are great and they will be soaking up this biography without realizing that they're learning important history. Thanks to publisher for review copy!

A complete account of her life as well as how she freed slaves

Very well written biography of Harriet Tubman. A complete account of her life as well as how she free slaves. I really liked that it included her entire life (her childhood, her life as a slave, escaping, helping others become free, her assistance during the Civil War, opening a boarding house, and more). A lot of information but easy to understand. This beginner reader offers a Glossary, timelines throughout the book, Think About prompts, Myth vs Facts boxes, and an end of book quiz.

So colorful!

This sized like a short beginner chapter book. The design of it is fantastic, I'd like to iwn the whole series of them. I first saw this book on another's feed on IG and was intrigued. In person it is even better than I would have guessed. There are vibrant images and informative text. These definitely look like they may be good introductory biographies.

Highly Engaging Biography of Harriet Tubman!

This is a wonderfully accessible book about the life and impact of Harriet Tubman. Her story is told in eight chapters and includes a timeline to help young readers follow her journey, key questions throughout to promote student reflection, a glossary of terms and even a quiz at the end! It's beautifully written and illustrated. All of this will help educators guide student discussion about slavery, geography, US history, courage and what it means to be a hero. I highly recommend it! Not only is it a story about a phenomenal woman who repeatedly risked her life to help others escape from slavery, but its format offers many ways to engage students and help them learn about this courageous woman, and a critical part of US history.

Great bibliography book for beginners!

New readers would enjoy this book because it's an easy read and a great way to learn about Harriet Tubman. Also, my son loves bibliographies and the "Who was" series. He read it and enjoyed it (although it's below his reading level). I plan on sharing this with my niece who is in Kindergarten and likes to read! I received this book from the publisher.

Christine helps young learners to think critically about American slavery.

I really wish I had this book when I was in the classroom. Sharing a story of slavery isn’t ever easy for any educator yet Christine helps learners to think critically about American slavery while telling a more humanizing and accurate account of Harriet Tubman's life. Her developmentally appropriate language and visual graphics are just right for our elementary classrooms. This book is needed in our elementary spaces. Are you ready to discover the life of Harriet Tubman ― a story about courage, bravery, and freedom? This Harriet Tubman biography for children includes a visual timeline of Harriet's life, helpful definitions and in-depth glossary, and even quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding of the who, what, where, when, why, and how of Harriet’s life.

Great Reference Book for Kids

What a great reference book for kids. I especially liked the illustration and how the book is categorized. The "think tanks" and timelines are a nice feature most books omit. I also like how the author bolded certain key words in the text. These words are mentioned in the back of the book in the glossary. This gives the reader an extra "boost" when trying to pick out key words or phrases. I will most definitely add this to my classroom library! Overall, this is a great book for kids! I did receive this book from the publisher to review.

Must have for all elementary teachers

I was sent this book by the publisher with the expectation that I would give an honest review. This is an amazing biography of a true american hero. Platt presents the information in a manner that will pull kids into the life of Ms. Tubman and explains the struggles that slaves went through during that time. Wonderfully written and a great resource for younger students to use for research.

Great way to add to your history lessons.

As homeschoolers, we really enjoy this series of books. They are enjoyable with beautiful illustrations. I would give it a lower elementary age range. My daughter reads them easily and repeatedly. I was offered a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my voluntary review.

A very important lesson can be learned

This is a great little educational read. Especially with the times right now it's a good read for children to learn about slavery and what it took to get to this point. They also get to learn how this great leader of a woman, was so determined to help free all the slaves and she repeatedly put herself in danger to do so.

Review from mom and 11-year old daughter: WE LOVE IT!

My 11-year old daughter read this aloud to us one night before bed. We didn’t mean to read it all at once, but we couldn’t stop! It was so good! I LOVED the art. My daughter liked the timelines and facts and the “Jump in the Think Tank” feature. We learned so much we didn’t know about Harriet, like her birth name and her service in the Civil War. The book is much more in-depth than anything else we’re read about Harriet. The writing was really clear and descriptive. Christine gives an honest and realistic (yet age-appropriate) portrayal of Harriet’s life in slavery. We definitely recommend this book!

Packed with information

This book provides a lot of the context and background surrounding the life of Harriet Tubman. It is approximately 60 pages long with a generous mix of illustrations. Perfect for young readers and the content is easy to understand. Plenty of discussion points and teaching topics. An excellent addition to your little one's non-fiction library.

Good balance of graphics with information

I like the glossary and the challenge accepted sections of this book. I am a retired educator and currently working as a sub for fun. I will be giving this book away as a prize. I looked in the AR database and this does not appear to have an associated AR test. Sadly, kids are all about earning AR points nowadays. I am hoping that a child will still be happy receive this book. I received this complimentary book from Callisto Publishing.

Nicely done book

This biography about Harriet Tubman is ideal for younger elementary school kids. It gives plenty of information about Harriet's life and slavery in America during her lifetime. The book is filled with illustrations to further engage young readers. The book is nicely done. I'd be interested in seeing more books like this for my younger children to read.

My 7-Year-Old Daughter's New Favorite Harriet Tubman Book

My 7-year-old daughter LOVES Harriet Tubman. She reads anything she can about her and this new book is now her favorite. She loves the illustrations and the "Myth vs Fact" and "Jump in the Think Tank" sidebars. Even with all she already new about Tubman, she's learning new facts she didn't know before - like Harriet's original name, Araminta (and nickname "Minty!"). I especially appreciate that this book has introduced my daughter to other historical events and individuals (like Nat Turner's Rebellion) that shaped and influenced Tubman's life. This has been a great addition to our home library and perfect timing for the homeschooling situation we're now in. We can't wait for more stories like these.

Great!

Her story is inspiring! The layout of this book is done well, with bright colors and nice pictures. It's labeled "new reader" but my 3rd grader really likes it and is still a good reading length for her. I even learned a bit about her and a refresher over stuff I had known. Great learning book and to be inspired by!

Great biography!

I’m obsessed with this series! These are fantastic biography books for about 2nd grade level. The pictures are lovely and the charts are very helpful. I will be getting more in this series for sure! *I received a review copy of this book from the publisher.

Highly recommend!

My 8 year old and I love the nonfiction books written by Historian Christine Platt. This book is so informative about the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. The book is written in clear language and the story telling is honest. The author provides conversation starters that encourage great dialogue about slavery and racism and the strength of humanity. We are huge fans of Harriet Tubman and Christine Platt, world changers!

Fantastic book!

I read this book with my kids and it prompted several great discussions. It is a lovely book, both in words and illustrations. While completely age appropriate, it didn’t sugar coat life as an enslaved person like so many children books can. My kids especially loved the think tank questions. And my older daughter said “I thought I knew this story but I didn’t understand it all before”. And my kids are suckers for a good glossary!

My 7 year old daughter loved this book!

This was such a wonderful biography of Harriet Tubman and the pictures where beautiful and the boxes with info were very helpful for my daughter. She learned a ton and was inspired by Harriet. We received a review copy from the publisher.

Great biography

This is a great book for new readers. It is easy to read, but not patronizing and has some great historical information in here. It's written in a fun, engaging way that keeps kids reading and not bored. Overall, it's a great introduction in the genre of biography.

An Excellent Book!!

This is an easy, must-read, historically accurate book written for younger audiences about the life of Harriet Tubman. It goes into detail about her life from the beginning to the end. Not only are there many pictures, maps and questions to ponder throughout the book but it also has a glossary and a quiz at the end. I found this book to be delightful. I received a review copy from the publisher. Thank you again Callisto Publisher's Club!

My daughter loved this book and learning about Harriet Tubman. I was provided a review copy by the publisher.

Great book

This is an excellent book for early readers. It covers the life of Harriet Tubman very well and gives some questions to think about and a quiz to test comprehension.

Great pieceof historical literature

Great book!! Took big issues and was able to use words for small children to understand.

Important book 📚

I read this book for myself, not for my child, and learned things I was never taught in school. This book honors the story of Harriet and is written in a way that early readers can remember her and her legacy. In my opinion this book is a must have for educators

Very well rounded and in-depth view of a well known American figure.

Ms Platt was very careful with the story of an American icon that has been misunderstood and under valued in history books. As an adult I learned new facts and gained new insights that left me proud and not bitter.

A great read!

Thoughtful, engaging, and well-written. I’ve appreciated everything I’ve read by Christine Platt!

Great book (and heroine) for young readers

Every generation needs heroes (and heroines). Their lives give us hope that the future can be better than the past. It timely, that Harriet Tubman has become an icon for what a hero can be today. This heroine (female hero) not only shows us that the future can be better, but she demonstrates how we can actively crusade to make that happen. Crusade is exactly was she did. She, time and again, risked her own life to save others. She spoke out about the cruelty of humanity and actively worked to change the laws which have kept certain groups – blacks and women – shackled. Young people, girls and boys need role models. Christine Platt writes in such a way that young minds can grasp the transformative significance that one person can make. She highlights how Tubman, although a slave and a woman, broke those barriers and made the world better because she was here. May we all take up that mantle so that the world we leave will be better than that in which we were born. Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.

Harriet a brave woman

I received a free preview of this book from the publisher for my unbiased review. This is one in a series of biographies that are helpful for students starting to do research for their biography unit. There is a timeline at the bottom of the pages that helps tell what events were happening in the world while she was alive. The language is good for beginning readers. The pictures are colorful but simple. There are a few real pictures of her. This book is true to the style of the series. There is a glossary for words students might need help with and a quiz at the back of the book. The myth and fact sections provide a nice way to access some quick time relevant facts. Jump in the Think Tank poses a what you would do style question. The maps are helpful to show where events are taking place.

loved it! (my kids did too)

we've enjoyed every book in this series that we've read so far, but this one kept my kid up past bedtime! we are a multi-racial family and it's especially important to us to learn about the heroes that made it possible for a family like ours to exist. Harriet Tubman is a truly amazing person to us. having said that, this book is wonderful! epecially for the age range 6-8 years old. my kids are older, but they enjoy reading about Tubman. beautifully illustrated and informative. my 11 year old read it at bedtime and then reread it and then a third time before his light turned out. when I asked him about it, "she was so amazing. I just owed it to her to read it again." *I received a copy from the publisher

A Remarkable and Courageous Woman

Harriet Tubman, nickname Minty and born as Araminta Ross. This biography of her life is not just educational but interesting and a well written work. The story of her life covers American Slavery, myths and facts, a timeline of her life, helpful definitions and quizzes and blank pages for notes. It's a fascinating story, with Nice illustrations. I received a copy from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review. I'm not required to write a positive review. Having no knowledge of Harriet, other than hearing her name, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. What a remarkable and courageous woman. This is a great book for young readers, but get it to read to your youngest children or just yourself

A Delightful Bio of the Hero who SHOULD be on the $20 Bill!!!

Before our current administration banned the efforts, Harriet Tubman was to be the new hero and Founding Mother on the $20 bill. Christine Platt does Ms. Tubman justice in this fabulous bio for first chapter readers, and Loris Lora's colorful illustrations complement the prose wonderfully. In addition to great text, there are timelines, "myth & fact" boxes, maps, bold words throughout the book and a glossary to define them, a multiple choice quiz at the end, and questions to "jump into the think tank" and delve deeper into the story. Educational, inspirational, and fun. Thanks, Callisto, for the review copy!

An Age Appropriate Overview of Her Life

This is a nice book on the life of Harriet Tubman. It gives a good overview of a few of the major events in her life at an age appropriate level. The author includes periodic questions to challenge the reader to think about the situation as a slave. At the end of the book are some review questions to test how well the reader retained the information presented in the book. I would highly recommend this book for kids, maybe aged 6 to 12, who are interested or need to learn more about Harriet Tubman. Note: This book was sent to me as a review copy from the publisher prior to its release date.
