The Snowy Nap

Overall, a great Jan Brett book; we have many of her winter ones and love them, especially the Christmas ones. The book is filled with her signature uber-detailed and foreshadowing drawings, which delight and entertain us all. The setting evokes a time and place well, a favorite characteristic of Jan Brett's books; I feel like I've traveled to Scandinavia or the Black Forest when I read them. Took off one star because there's nothing *new* here. If you love Jan Brett's style, you'll love this and add it. However, the story seemed pretty similar to many other of her books, especially other winter ones. I also didn't think the ending and/or "lesson" had as much oomph to it as some of her others do. Winter is coming, the animals tease Hedgie about how excited they are to experience it and that he won't get to see any of it, because he hibernates. He's bummed. He ends up inside the house and gets to see each of those items from the sunny safety of a windowsill. Afterward, he goes into hibernation. Again, cute signature illustrative style, but the story seemed kinda like Jan Brett's publishers told her she needed to write another book, just get it out there and her previous legendary name and style would sell it. Which it does. If you're new to Jan Brett, buy one of her others. If you're already a fan, this is a decent addition.

Bought as a Christmas gift for someone who loves hedgehogs, books, and Jan Brett's work. That made this the perfect gift. Cute story and illustrations that will appeal to a range of kids.

It's a wonderful book, with the beautiful and detailed illustrations Jan Brett is known for, and a delightful child-friendly main character. Pages were clean, printing was precise, and binding seemed to be durable.

I always enjoy Jan Brett's illustrations. This is a very cute, cozy story for winter. I like having some "winter"books to put out after Christmas, when the Christmas books are put away. This is perfect. Little hedgehog tries to stay up to see some of the wonders of winter. The little girl finds him almost frozen in the snow, and he gets to spend several days inside, watching winter happen outside the window, until he just can't stay awake any longer. At the end, the little girl carefully puts him in his den so he can sleep until spring. I really enjoyed this one and my kids did as well, especially my just-turned 4 and just-turned 6 year olds.

The illustrations are rich and exquisite - you can feel the texture of soft yarn in the borders, and you can get a hint of the story ahead from the side panels. This book also gave me a different perspective on winter. The story touched me and to my surprise brought tears to my eyes. Highly recommended.

Darling new Jan Brett book. Perfect to use as a close read with first grade, vocabulary is extensive and poetic. The book can be used with The Nap for contrast and compare activities. And just read for pure enjoyment! Beautiful artwork as always. Nothing makes my day like a new book from Jan Brett. I already bought 6 copies to give to grandchildren and others for Christmas.

I LOVE JAN BRETT!!! Even met her at a Kindergarten conference. My students and I always hunt for Hedgie in each of the books I have. Now to have a book just about Hedgie, HEAVEN! I found a dog toy that was a hedge hog and it grunts when you squeeze it! My students love it. It joins us whenever a Jan Brett book is read!

I collect Jan Brett for the phenomenal artistry. Her character designs are beautiful with rich colors and amazing illustrations. She fills the pages with her magic art.

Even adults can learn new information from Jan Brett's beautiful picture books for young children. I did not know, for example, that hedgehogs hibernate as bears do. Typical splendid borders. An engrossing story about not wanting to go to sleep for fear of missing something. Children and their elders will love this new picture book.

I purchase 3 of Jan Brett’s new book each year. One for each of my grandchildren. Her books are always beautifully illustrated with an absolutely delightful story. Her books are a perfect for any age level to enjoy! A book for future generations to enjoy. I strongly recommend this book as well as her other books!

I have a collection of Jan Brett's books. When I tell my grandchildren that I have a new Jan Brett book, they go to the special shelf and study all the art work in the new book. As young adults, they still talk about the stories and laugh at the antics of the characters.
