The survivor of a difficult childhood and youth, Rubin Carter rose to become a top contender for the middleweight boxing crown. But his career crashed to a halt on May 26, 1967, when he and another man were found guilty of the murder of three white people in a New Jersey bar. While in prison, Carter chronicled the events that led him from the ring to three consecutive life sentences and 10 years in solitary confinement. His story was a cry for help to the public, an attempt to set the record straight and force a new trial. Bob Dylan wrote a classic anthem for Carter's struggle; and Joan Baez, Muhammad Ali, Roberta Flack, and thousands more took up the cause as well. Originally published in 1974, this account is an eye-opening examination of growing up black in America, problems in the United States prison system, and Carter's own battles.

Incredible Story

After seeing the movie numerous times. Little did I know it was loosely based on this book. Which is the reason I purchased it. This book covers so much more than the movie. A truly great read.

You gotta get Break A@@ to Get A@@

Imagine being incarcerated for 20-some odd years for a crime you know, the police department knows, and the department of corrections knows you did not commit? We're not talking about public opinion, but certifiable facts that will prove your innocence. The Patterson PD has a bone to pick with you, and they are going to stick it to you in a very big way. Imagine yourself being Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, who went from a welter-weight champion to a cause celibre of everything that is wrong in the American justice system. . He lays out his criminal past which began as a juvenile, and how "reform" schools did nothing more than make him a better criminal. Around the same time he takes up boxing, and makes a name for himself (he took a tour of South Africa with the late Steven Biko, who warned him if he wanted to live he better stop catcalling a white woman). Right as the cusp of success, there is a Barroom shooting, and the rest as they say is..history. The Sixteenth Round reads like a story of a man going to the electric chair, who is screaming for someone, anyone to help him. This was literally the biggest fight of his life. He's angry, he's pleading, and he's desperate. With a book so passionate and heartbreaking, it makes for a great read. Although Rubin Carter wasn't an angel, his story illustrates how easy it is to be on the wrong side of the law through no fault of your own.

it was easy to see where the movie was not entirely accurate

An honest perspective from a troubled life. He was definitely wronged and between this and another book written entitled "Hurricane", by James Hirsch, it was easy to see where the movie was not entirely accurate. Yet I cried at the end of the movie when the song "Amazing" came on. All before I read both books. This book is well worth the read and the perspective of an angry man. Rest in peace Rubin.

Pat Tillman Meets Braveheart

Rarely does a person not addicted to alcohol or women write a book as great as this one. The author does a great job of making all the douche bag characters in this book pay for their fowl deeds. A third of the way through the book the author makes an important decision, he decides that instead of receiving another beating he is prepared to die in self-defense. When hurricane goes to Jamestown (juvenile detention) he gives great descriptions of the prison guards like Mr. Lightfoot, "a 33-year old man whose mother has protected him from the world." When he goes to the military, he describes the rest of the soldiers as "inexperienced children with no idea of how the world works." There is a reason Bob Dylan wrote a song about this guy, he truly is an old school character, prepared to die to defend others with less strength than himself. This is the 7th best book I have read in my life. The top 12 are: 'Tis by Frank McCourt Days of Obligation : An Argument with My Mexican Father by Richard Rodriguez Marching Powder : A True Story of Friendship and South America's Strangest Jail by Thomas McFadden, Rusty Young Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis The Closer We Are to Dying : A Memoir of Father and Family by Joe Fiorito The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender to Number 45472 by Rubin Carter Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis, Larry Sloman The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream by Paulo Coelho Makes Me Wanna Holler : A Young Black Man in America by Nathan McCall Down Under by Bill Bryson First Contact in Korea: A Native English Teacher's Journey into the Backwoods of South Korea by Brian Ward

A MUST READ!!!

I saw the movie "Hurricane" with Denzel Washington and was so moved by the film that I immediately went to my computer and purchased the book from Amazon. What I did not realize is that the book was far more powerful than the film! It offers the complete insights of what the correctional facilities are like in a dog-eat-dog nightmare that Rubin Carter endured for most of his adult life. The courage and ferocity of this man is unrivaled and I could not put the book down. Carter is a testimony to what "the system" can do to a man and yet he overcame insurmountable odds in the face of bigotry and hatred. He is a legend, an unsung hero and a man that faces life and its challenges with a tenacity few in society could endure. This book will change your perceptions in many, many ways. I strongly advocate it!

Enjoyable Read that will keep you captivated

I enjoyed reading this book. Read it within 4 days. A deep glimpse into someone who discovered their purpose at an early age. Also, shows someone who was very misguided. Could what have happened to Rubin "Hurricane" Carter is the same that happened to many of our Black youth? I very seriously would not doubt it. A very good read I think all will enjoy about a man misunderstood.

THE HURRICAN, MY HERO!!!

Amazing!! Cried through some parts!!! This man went through hell!!! I wish I were lucky enough to have met him!!! He did NOTHING wrong. ONLY because he was black!!! Incredible people helped in (in the movie). This book is so compelling!!! Hard to put down!!! He is my hero!!!!

Best read ever!

Bought it for my son. He declares it is the best book he has ever read!

Well written and thought provoking...

The Sixteenth Round was written by a man that put everything he had of himself into this book. From the beginning it rings as true and honest introspection and very quickly the reader identifies with Rubin. The writing shows a total dedication; I could imagine the author sitting in the cell carefully planning every word and phrase like a sculptor might if they were creating the most important work of their life. While others may have simply wallowed in the misery of their situation, Rubin strived for something more out of life, a true champion that refused to quit even after the most devastating knockdowns. Inspiring.

Real, Raw and Entertaining

I love how Real and Raw this book was. A very entertaini g story that was colorfully told. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

This is a great book! I'm going to buy a copy for my teenage sons to read as well.

Real Life always will have 5 stars

Why not 5 stars, after all the pain and the injustice? Why not 5 star when this is a true story? I enjoyed and I learned another way to see how our society with lies can destroy the life of someone else. He was not defeated, just that this round take him so long to beat it! But he did best it and he get stronger and he became a voice of those that can't speak.

Quick shipping

I had to write a paper on this book for school it came to me quickly. It is a good easy read.

Very absorbing autobiography...be advised, though, that the book ends with the author still in prison and does not chronicle his eventual release. Definitely worth reading if your interested in the Hurricane 's life.

Five Stars

Read the book in 2 days! Simply couldn't put it down!

astonishingly poetic

What a wonderfully written biography. Carter's exceptional natural writing talent shines through as he gives you honest insight into his tumultuous life. His language is moving and also amazing to know he was self educated while incarcerated. I gave this book to my father and he enjoyed hearing the language of his childhood and remembered when Carter was in his prime. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys biographies and reading a good personal story.

Good content to this movie

An very AWESOME NOVEL!! I loved it!!

Excellent book

Book was received in excellent condition and tells an amazing story of hope.

This is the story of hurricane...

This autobiography of Carter was written while still in prison, gives great insight to the early years of this man and the prejudice and injustice he experienced, early in life, sending him to jail three times before his career as a prize fighter began. When the movie Hurricane came on cable, I watched with my son, as a boy picked up this same book while trying to learn to catch up his reading skills. Enjoying the movie prompted me to buy the book for both my son and me. I have been in search of something/anything that will get him to read, at age 11. It does contain explicit language and graphic description of this 11 year old's time in boys' prison. I hope this is a gentle, home version of scared straight. It leaves one to question, how can this happen in this country.

An awesome book

A great book that is intense and makes you feel like you were there when he describes things. Much better that the movie.

Five Stars

Great book

Insightful

This book has been brilliantly written to make the reader have an insight into life in prison and the unjust racist judicial system that was prevalent at the time.

Deep Book

Sixteenth Round from Amazon

I bought this book for my Grandson as it was not in our library. He said that he liked the story. The text is full of profanity, but that being said, he did read the book. The book was purchased from Amazon, and arrived in a few days.

Best book.

This is well written and worth the time and money I put into it. It's the best book I've read in years and it's well done.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

I saw the film starring Denzel Washington and after I immediately contacted Amazon to get the book for my Kindle. There is no doubting Mans inhumanity to Man. One can't believe the traumas that Hurricane went through. The book has many grammar problems but the text of the story is quite incredible. Full marks to Hurricane for putting it on paper.

powerful

Very powerful. It flows, hard to put down. This book is a must for those who care about innocent people who are wrongfully incarcerated.

Sixteenth round

Anyone who seeks knowledge and a further insight on the horrors of the correctional system of the United States should unquestionably read this!

Enjoyed this book every much

Enjoyed this book every much, but was totally saddened by his anger and hate toward "the system", authority, and his family. Early in the book he remarks how his family was never short of food, housing, love between family memembers, but that his father was very strong-willed, and did use a belt, etc. But then who's parents didn't at that time; it was normal parenting techniques. He also said that he had numerous brothers and sister, many of who obtained advanced degrees, yet he was the only one who became a harden criminal. He leads you to believe he was completely a creature of his tough, criminal enviornment, but yet he then states how he really loved to fight, to case pain, to enforce his will on others. Yes, his incarceration for murder is a complete misapplication of justice, and his anger is expected and worthy, (luckly he was later able to get his verdict overturned. But he fails in his mind that where he finally ended up was because of his own poor decisions; his failure to obey rules and orders, and his complete unwilliness to have anyone tell him what to do. I enjoyed the book very much, but found myself feeling very sorry for the man, and yet at the same time being very angry at him because throughout the book fails to realize because of his poor choices and actions, he was his own worst enemy.

I've survived the Hurricane.

I could not wait to get my hands on a copy of this book. As riveting as the movie was and it was that. It paled in comparison to the blow by fascinating blow of Rubin's life experiences as told by Rube himself. So many details and accounts were left out of the movie. You must read this page turner. My first edition hardcover came in near mint condition from a seller who got it from a library sale in Niagra Falls N.Y. I don't do e books I have to turn the page. And im halfway thru it already. Wow!

The sixteenth round

This was an excellent read. Well written, very good book.one of the best books I've ever read. To bad good books have to end.

Not a knockout.

Relentlessly self-serving and repetitive. At times, there are confusing shifts of time and place. Oddly, the movie is much better than the book.

The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender To #45472. I had been looking forward to receiving this book as i have been searching for a copy (that i could afford!) for quite some time. It was shipped over from USA in one piece, in about 4 weeks which i though was quite good. The condition was good as suggested, no missing or damaged pages. There were a couple of sticky looking marks on the cover, but nothing that i can't clean up. Over all a happy customer, looking forward to reading!

Here Come the Story of Hurricane

What does it take to make someone a great fighter like Rubin "Hurricane" Carter? This book might tell you what it takes and then a whole lot more. THe book will definitely tel you what it is like to ba an African American growing up in racist New Jersey. You see it was this hard life pelted with racism that made the Hurricane who he was. Born a fighter coming out of the womb, he was the son to a Lutheran preacher who was rather strict around the house. Hurricane one time saw someone stealing his families coal, and beating up one of his brothers, so Hurricane beat him up. Instead of being praised for defending the coal his father punished Hurricane without even hearing his side of the story . Hurricane's father would later move to a nicer house in a crappier neighborhood . It was here that Hurricane would get introduced to the Apaches. THe local neighborhood gang which would organize fights with rival gangs and steal clothes . It was on one of these occasions where Hurricane had stolen a bunch of clothes that his father turned him in to the cops. This got his feet wet in the juvenile system and exp[osed him t the racism inherent in our nation's legal system. Later in his young life Huirricane and his friends would be hanging around a local river when a local pervert tried to molest Hurricane and a few friends. It turned out that Hurricane ends up stabbing the pervert which results in him getting incarcerated till he was 21. In the system Hurricane details and explains how racist the system is with prison guards and cops constants i9nsulting African AMericans, using racial epithets , and down right cruel physical abuse. The guards are sadistic and they are extra mean to African AMericans. White prisoners were not subjected to such treatment, in fact it is the cops who get off and making African AMerican lives difficult and would not lose sleep if they killed one. Hurricane would later join the military after escaping the facility . He became a paratreooper and discovered the Muslim faith. It was in the military that he discovered his love for boxing and what he was meant to do. Upon returning to the states he would get incarcerated again for the crime of doing nothing. Later in his frustration he would pick pocket someone's purse and get locked up for a nether three years. It was here that he honed his desire to become a prize fighter. THE world of prize fighting is not as pretty as ne might think. Promoters make the money while the fighter gets cheated and ripped off. A promoter will use a fighter until they are no good and then throw them to the proverbial scrap yard when they can fight no longer. Things are even worse if you are African AMerican. Things culminate for Hurricane when he is accused of a triple murder he did not commit. Reading his account of what happened will give you insight into how cruel our system was and perhaps still is to African AMericans. The clear intent of the state was to lock up and possibly kill Rubin Carter. He was outspoken in telling his people to defend themselves against white cop oppression . The trial was a pic circus and a =joke with so many mistakes from law enforcement it was sad. Great autobiography and after reading this you will feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game.

Wow!

A difficult, torturous, agonizing read but worth it. If you want to read a true description of the racial divide in America between blacks and whites, this book is for you. Yes, Hurricane made some mistakes that he paid for but for the most part he was the victim of blatant racism and injustice. An impossible life story that I could not put down and a book that should be part of every high school's curriculum.

Great read, I recommend this book to be read by everyone.

This book was a great read about the life of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. Even though he has long since been deceased, his memories are in the pages of his book that depicts the injustice he endured in his life. There are some typos and graphic language, but overall a very good book.

Paranoid ravings of a muderering sociopath

Carter was a rage-fueled racist and violent hothead who finally fulfilled his destiny on a hot New Jersey night, leaving three innocent white bodies in the wake of the Hurricane. He was also a consummate BS artist, as his book amply illustrates. It boggles the mind that anyone could read this and still find him an admirable character.

Sad, Horrific and a Scathing indictment on American Culture

After reading this book, I was amazed that the life of one man can be so horrific and yet eye-opening. I was not surprised of the accounts mentioned regarding his incarceration in both juvenile prison and adult prison. What surprised me is how he survived to live and tell this story. The frank brutality, inhumanity and disregard for justice is simply overwhelming. The book is written in the style of what one might term, street conversation. Two friends, hanging out on the stoops of ones house and reminiscing about their lives. From the time Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was five years old, until his release from prison, the book reads like a story from "Hell". Some of the incidents in prison with the guards seem to be unbelievable because, if you understand and believe the prison system's mentality, Rubin would have certainly been killed by either the guards or one of the many inmates (attempting to make a name for themselves). The other amazing thing in this book is Rubin's ability to remember so many small details over such a long period of time. The retelling of his life reads as if he somehow recorded every detailed incident and then managed to transcribe it to text. I find it awesome. If one is to believe what is written by Rubin (there are websites that suggest that much of the tales were fabricated), then it certainly is a marvelous book to read, if nothing more than to see how one many managed to survive such an ordeal. I know I could never survive such brutality. Rubin's will to live, survive and be free reminds me yet of the stories of slaves from Africa being transported to the USA or the Caribbean slave trade and somehow managing to survive the trip. The book is like no other book in its intensity, depth and depravity. I highly recommend this book as well as the follow-up to this book, entitled, "Eye of the Hurricane: My Path from Darkness to Freedom" by Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, Ken Klonsky and Nelson Mandela (Jan 1, 2011). This follow-up fills in much of what was left out in the first book. the Sixteenth Round, because it was written while Rubin was in prison after the first trial.

THE HEARTS OF MEN

Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter's "The 16th Round" made my weekend delightful. It is one book that calls morality to question. The story it tells is just one out of the millions most Black Americans of his era (and beyond) developed immunity to hearing. It is a sweet sad story; and every page of the book seem to ask: Where has justice gone? I couldn't give an answer, but I know one thing for sure: Freedom was faraway, and compassion was nowhere to be found. Yes, like every other society, there are two people in the U.S.A.: the good ones and the bad ones. Given the nation's racially charged history, I can understand the reason why "freedom and justice" are among the most common phrases that feature in every Presidential Speech. History clearly shows that the United States of America deliberately deprived herself of both true freedom and true justice. The reason for this being that the country showed more interest in the skin-colour of her denizens than in the contents of their character. Permit me to add this: I have always been a vocal supporter of Capital Punishment: as a deterrent for heinous crimes. But, the fact that justice has been, and are still being perverted on a daily basis (has since) doused my support for Death Penalty. My conscience never tires to remind me that many unfortunate 'Rubin Carters' have been put to death solely because of their skin-colour, and never because they actually did what they were accused of doing. These unfortunate souls were never champions. They were never celebrated. Their transitions went unheralded, but God kept the count. The human heart is desperately wicked! We have soiled our hands, and have polluted our lands with innocent blood. Our wickedness is worse than stench! Well, there is no point crying over spilled milk. The most reasonable thing for us to do now is to change. We have to seek true penance, true repentance, before seeking the forgiveness of God. We owe these to God, and to all our victims. I have always known that the more unfortunate 'Rubin Carters' lie in unmarked graves. Their "16th Rounds" may never be written.

Rubin Cartert, the true story - it's not enough to see the movie

If you have seen "The Hurricane" motion picture, starring Denzel Washington (an amazing peformance), surely you'd think that you know everything there is to know about Rubin Carter. Unfortunately, that's incorrect. Furthermore, it's not even close. Don't get me wrong - the motion picture is fantastic and it surely includes all the important details, but regardless to what kind of movie it is - you should know, and I can tell you that for sure because I read this book, that there are A LOT of details that aren't mentioned in the movie. If you want to know the whole story I must implore you to take a long look at that book. But I should also tell you that there's a downside: The book can make you read even five pages in a row without any important or interesting thing coming up; it can also make your patience burst if you're expecting something to happen but it takes long pages, sometimes not even discribed so interestingly. Bottom line: if Rubin Carter and his amazing story interests you - I would suggest you read this book. It will make you see the big picture about this man.

Powerful...Incredible...Enthralling...Amazing!

The Sixteenth Round was the powerful, emotional document of Rubin Carter's life, ending with a plead to force a new trial to prove his innocence. But, it turned out to be a timeless, eye-opening portrait of prisons in America and the haunting truth of Justice and Fate. Needless to say, this book is explicit, angry, and takes all prisoners. You can't escape the cruelty of Rubin's life, witnessing the reality, and how he was caught in the center of Hell...and the haunting fact was that it was the truth. The pain he had to go through is, to me, inconceivable. Rubin Carter has written a terrific book, more than what he wanted it to be...a timeless testament about America, justice, prison, and fate...He may not be the best boxer, but he is one of the best fighters...fighting the dehumanization of his life weaving through prison and out, and fighting the cruelty of "Madame One-Eyed Justice" and "Fate." This book will not come off of your brain...it is a very honest, angry, stirringly emotional, thriller of a book. I recommend it to the people who saw the movie, and someone who wants a direct and eye-opening portal into the mind of a black man living through the Civil Rights Movement.

A very good read!

I totally enjoyed this book it was well written and really gave you an insight into the life, trials and tribulations into the world through Carter's eyes. Very interesting and heartbreaking...

Great read

I would highly recommend this book to any fan of the movie. The film covers a lot of what's in here but not all of it. The book gives u more insight into what actually happened and more details about the case. I have so much more respect for what MR. Carter went through after reading this. Totally worth it if u want a great story.

Good Book

Enjoyed the read! Ruben endured a rough life. It’s a great story! The movie is good too. Ruben was a welterweight and middleweight but looked like a light heavy, the dude was jacked!

Amazing Story - Revisited....

..having read the superb book "the hurricane",i wanted to know more of this remarkable man's story, his autobiography did not disappoint. reading his own words convey the powerful emotions one can only begin to imagine when your world is shattered by life imprisonment for a crime you did not commit. mr. carter's writings of his childhood up to his wrongful imprisonment paint a graphic picture of the forces that mold us, he was by no means a model citizen, but then, who of us are. i found the spirit of this man extraordinary,i hope that the visibility his life story has received of late, will in some way compensate him. but for the many years stolen, there is no repayment. i found both "the 16th round" and "the hurricane" great reading, for they fill in the gaps for each other. fyi: "the 16th round" can be had from penguin books out of canada.

Worst book ever

One horrible book. The book club has been written without common usage of the vernacular of the street

A must read for every American!!

A strong and important case study on what goes wrong in a black male's life. It's important for all American to read how our system which we are responsible for allows for racism, police brutality, and social lynching and judgement without facts in our court system. I thank Rubin Carter for such a clear picture and overview of our prison system.

Never Give up!

This man's courageous story-is sad but triumphant in that he has given hope to more people. This book is extremely popular at this time-due to the fact that Denzel Washington starred in the movie-Hurricane...Which is supposed to portray Rubin's life. I give this man my applause and honor..For truely, he is a man of many gifts. My hat is off to Rubin. In the days of trial and tribulation-some people need to know that injustices are real and can be corrected to some extent. The pain and suffering that one man faced are not to be forgotten or down-played-in any sense of the word. It is the author's heart that sends a message to others. He had the perserverance to stay focused on what was right. It's true that not everyone has the determination and courage to face and battle a situation that was marked for failure. I am extremely impressed by the heart and soul of this man-I wish to commend him for a job well done. He has inspired a great many people.

One of the Best

I read this book after seeing the movie the Hurricane. I was thought that this would be a more in-depth telling of the movie; boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. I could not put this book down, each time I picked it up I was drawn into the struggle that Rubin Carter faced in his life. As a man in America, this book touched me on many levels; I could feel the pain and Rubin struggled against odds that were always against him. But more important is the message that is held deep in the pages of this book. One should never give up on what you believe to be right, and that life is full of obstacles. You have a choice, either let those obstacles destroy you or find a way to get past them. Read this book now!

Must read!!!

I decided to read this book after watching the movie the Hurricane. I couldn't put it down. It's important on a human level and speaks to the racial turmoil that still exists today.

Ain't it a shame...

that you can't find this book in the USA! What does it say? Sure we can read another boring account of some so call "star" from the tabloid press, yet we don't have the compassion to hear a courageous story until 25 years later! God bless those who read this story earlier and reversed an injustice. Here's to you Rubin! And to you John Artis! Thanks alot!

Finally found a copy!

I finally got a hold of this book, off an old friend who has tons of books lying around. Yes, it's worth the read! Try to get it if you can. I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't believe Rubin Carter is innocent, since the police are never wrong. Well, it's time to face the facts. Read this book if you can find it.

A True Account

I bought this book my sophomore year of high school and that was over 7 years ago. It has literally been my bible to life. Rubin and his book have changed my life more than anything else I have ever encountered. Too often than not we find false heroes in this world. People like Paris Hilton who some look up to as a hero or a role model, but the true heroes in this life are often over looked or never seen at all. Rubin Carter is a true hero, I have never even heard of such a troubled life an to come out on top both a champion of his sport and one in life. A wise man told me once that it is now how we live this life but what we do during it. If your looking for a uplifting book of a true hero an a book that will give you strength when all doubt you, this is the one.

Reality

Those of us who grew up in middle class America have no idea what a survival struggle childhood was for Ruben Carter and other kids like him. Read this story in all its uncensored rawness for a harsh dose of reality. Then marvel with me at the wave of honor and respect Mr. Carter is now riding in spite of his bout with the "powers that be".

NO NEED FOR A BOOK MARK ON THIS ONE!

I couldn't put the book down (Hense the reason I didn't need a book mark). This book is easy to read and it was exciting and suspenseful. It starts off in the beginning, when he was a child. No one can remember vivid detail of their younger life (I'm talking kindergarden). The way Rubin wrote this book was like he remebered everything. The description of the racism and corruption in the police force back then just made me scream! It angered me on how much the prosecution lied to frame Rubin. You'll love this book like no other! Rubin Carter's style and attitude he put into this book was great! It is as if he had written other great books previously. IF YOU WERE INTERESTED ENOUGH TO READ A COUPLE OF REVIEWS (INCLUDING MINE) THEN YOU WILL DEFIANATLY LOVE THIS BOOK! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S OUT OF PRINT! THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!!

brilliant and shocking

To read a true 20th century tradgedy look no farther. an ispiration as it really happened. i loved the message of what we can overcome if we set out to do so. Amazing as it shows the very best and the very worst in human nature and i recommend it for all mature readers. it can be graphic and disturbing but it gets the point across.

the greatest book I have ever read!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take this from a person who does not read a lot this is one great book. You find yourself reading at night and reading for hours just because you want to find out what happens next. I have never read anything like this. To see someone like this obliviously not committing the crime and then get triple life its unbelievable. I actualy saw the movie first and thats what spured me to want to read this. He is my hero and after you read this book he will be yours to. For him to be one great boxer someone who was about to go for the midleweight fight but going to jail for something he didn't commit. He will inspire you. For his whole life never to be asking for help doing it all on his own but then getting triple life just because he is Black!!!!! Take this for someone who likes to hang out with friends and playing sports and never reading. READ IT. You will love it!!!!

What a man

What a life he went through. I only hope he is being looked after now & can still smile. He's been there, done that & I'm sure sold a few T-Shirts. A Truly amazing story & I'm sure Denzel Washington was knocked back as well. I can't wait to read Lazarus & the Hurricane. What could have been for Rubin was spoiled by some awful, awful people. I hope you can still smile Rubin !

The Sixteenth Round

This book is a must read! It is by far the best book I have ever read. It is a true account of a man who has been repeatedly abused by the American justice system and by society. The descriptions of events and situations are painted so vividly that you can actually see them happening. The writing style is very similar to that of Martin Luther King, Jr. If you want to read a book that shows the struggle that black people (and other minorities) must endure everyday , then you should definately read this book. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you want to get up and yell at somebody. And hopefully, it will make you want to be an activist. Read this book if you want to read about something REAL! Rubin Hurricane Carter and John Artis are heros!

A Champion's View on a Champion's Life

'The Hurricane' was one of the best films I have seen. And for a film to make me want to read it's extra special. 'The Sixteenth Round' is extremely well writen, because no one can write a champion's life story better than himself. The story of Rubin Carter caught my attention when I was researching into my sport's history. As a Junior Welsh Amateur Champion myself I can understand what being on top really feels like, to have to watch every little thing you do incase something can be used against you in the future. This book has inpired me to learn even more about Rubin Carter. After reading this book I felt like I knew Mr. Carter and wanted to help him somehow. My wish is to meet, my hero, Mr. Carter.

Half way through the book

Well from the other reviews your discovered the basic plot. I just want to let you know that I previously ordered this book, and I am about half way through. I do not even enjoy reading but I haven't been able to put this book down. What makes this book even greater is that fact that is is true. Also while reading it, the irony of the fact that we know that rubin carter has been set free but he doesn't even know this, as it was written while he was in jail. This book is incredible, and if I knew how good it would be before I read bought it I would probably pay what ever I had to. Thanx for taking your time in reading my review I just want to express my interest in this book

Vivid descriptions by a true hero and leader who was targeted by a corrupt system

One of the best books I have ever read. It was a true insight to the horrors of prison and the corrupt system that keeps it in place. At the same time, it told the trials and tribulations of one of the best fighters and men I have ever known.

The Hurricane

He went into prison like a hurricane and came out of prison after 20 years, like a hurricane. The movie was incredible and very powerful. Shows that anyone who tries to mess with anyone else is bound to lose....badly. The story of his life and how he fought to stay alive and free from the world and all of its punishments. He fought to keep out of prison and he won. He taught people to fight for whats right and to be free from all hate and loathing in the world. He made an impact on the world in the 1960s, and he still does today. And after he's dead and gone, he will still make an impact on the world. No one will stop the Hurricane. " Hate brought me into this place.....and love is going to bust me out," Denzel Washington

The rounds go on and on...

I purchased this book, after viewing the much celebrated movie, "The Hurricane." The book is mediocre. I found it difficult to believe much of the writer's exaggerated boasting regarding his many talents. I had erroneously gathered from the movie, that this was a self-effacing, self-made man, not so. The reader is ever searching for the "real meat" of the story, however, the bulk of the story is about the author as a "ghetto-bad boy." The last few chapters of the book are short and quickly race you through the actual murder and trial. Overall it is not well written and disappointing.

BIG inspiration

hello to whoever is reading this. although i have not yet read the book i cant wait. i orderd the book for the simple reason of the movie "The Hurricane" when i saw that i was so inspirerd by his courage and will to fight for his rights that i just knew i had to have that book as soon as. so i went around to book stores and none of them had it so i came here and this site is so handy and helpfull. anyway from the reviews i have read and from seeing the movie i cant wait until it comes and i am sure that it will be a great book. I know this because Rubin "Hurricane" Carter is a great role model and inspiring.

Five Stars

Good book

The Sixteenth Round: No 1 Contender to Superb Writer

This book is incredible! I've already read Hurricane: The Miraculous Journey by J.S. Hirsch, and Lazarus and the Hurricane, but in England it is extremely difficult to find this book, and I had to wait 18 days for the it to me. It was definately worth the wait. Being only 16, I don't often enjoy reading, but this story just reels you in and I rarely put it down. Rubin Carter: what an inspiration! Read it! It is definately worth it, especially when you think that it was written 30 years ago.

American Justice System?

After reading this book and knowing that Rubin Carter is a free man, I still wonder what kind of Justice we have in this country. All the conspirators that sent this innocent man to live the rest of his life behind bars are free, yet I know that there are still bigots and racists in this country that believe that Rubin Carter committed this outrageous crime. The real murderers were never caught, and the conspirators who sent an innocent man to prison were never punished. American Justice System?

Wonderful Book

A great read.

a black man living in a racist america

this novel of a man living in a 6 by 6 ft. cell is a different perspective of the way it was for an african- american living in an extremely tough and turbulent time. Rubin takes you through his times as a troublesome youth growing up in Patterson, New Jersey to his prize fighting days to his times in prison. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in black history or looking at a man's amazing personal journey.

Can't wait

Hi I have never wanted a book as bad as I want this one. The first time i have ever hear of the"HURRICANE" was the movie. I saw this movie and it grabbed me, pulled me in i couldn't spot watching it. I even put up a punching bag because of it. After I saw the movie I did a little research on Rubin and learned AMAZING things. So I came on amazon looking for the book I put in an order for it and can't wait to get. And once I read other peoples reviews I knew I wanted it. So now I sit and wait, butg if it is as intresting as every one says it will be worth it. I hope you find this review helpful and inspire you to read this book.

The hurricane

Incredible story, the book opens your eyes to the cruel reality some have had to endure. I recommend this book.

Five Stars

Awesome book and great shipping time!

The Sixteenth Round

I am still searching for this book. I have seen the movie, and I cried at the injustice and how I related to the story. Please republish this book so that everyone will be able to purchase it and read it. I have read "The Miraculous Journey" and "Lazarus and Hurricane", and they only whetted my appetite for the Hurricane's personal autobiography. I cannot wait to read it whenever it is re-released.

emtional

im not much for reading. i did however watch the movie....i was touched by everyone, the whole life of carter. im 29 wht male so i havent see all the racism that many blk americans have gone thru in the past but i do see the present. what i did see in the movie to compare to now is that there is alot, alot of space to fill with love and hope, courage to eliminate hate ! i admire anyone who over comes this...and pray one day my kids will grow up without hate. thanks carter in showing us what anyone can overcome. your a hero , inspiration to many. thanks for reading my review

The 17th round-a review of the 16th round

I was inspired to read this book when I heard the Bob Dylan song "Hurricane". This amazing book is a moving account of Rubin Carter's life written by Rubin himself while he was in prison. The stories of his life in prison and the battles he fought were great. I couldn't put the book down. The only problem with this book is that it is out of print and very hard to track down. It is defintely one of the best books I have ever read.

A touching story inspires child.

This story reached out and touched the lives of many people. It also made people realize not to be racist. I know that I used to be racist and this turned my life around. The fact that rubin was in jail for a crime he didnt commit just because he wasnt white isnt at all fair. His story inspired me not to be racist and to get others not to hate the non-white. It has touched many lives and i like that. I am one of Rubin's biggest fans.

An Angry Book By a Once Angry Man

The 16th Round: From Number 1 Contender to #45472 is a book written by Rubin "Hurricane" Carter from his former prison cell in Rahway State Prison, New Jersey circa 1973. The book gives a complete accounting of Rubin's life from the time he was a young boy growing up in New Jersey right up until the time he was incarcerated in the tough New Jersey penal system. It gives a full background on how he got to be where he was and the circumstances that put him there in his tainted and biased view. The book is well-written, but it of course has a slant to it that professes nothing but innocence and injustice toward the author. It's a one-sided storytelling as seen through the eyes of an angry convict. Everyone has heard the saying that all prisoners in jail profess that they are innocent - well this book and Rubin Carter do nothing to dispel that notion. The book is an angry, dark, twisted tale written by a man with no objectivity - and that's understandable. Rubin Carter is today a man full of love, compassion and understanding, but when this book was written he was a man full of hate, venom and indignation. Sometimes the book is a chore to read as Carter forces the reader to walk with him down his path of blameless righteousness. One gets the feeling that Carter feels everyone else in the world, the "pigs"(cops), "crackers"(white people), and the establishment (everyone else in the world) is wrong and he is right. After one is through with this book they still don't have any idea who really did commit the murders or why. The problem with the book is that it reaches no definite conclusions and all one really gets is 16 Chapters of Carter's self serving, four-letter racial rants about how he was done wrong and why he should be free. I make no conclusions here regarding Carter's guilt or his innocence, mainly because the book doesn't help the reader at arriving at any conclusion either. Carter can't decide who to point the finger of blame at in the book so what he does is point the finger of blame at everyone and anything that he can for his own predicament. There is nothing in the book that will make the reader come away and say - "Oh, he's innocent, let him free!". The book is dark and it's angry. I am a boxing historian who loves the sport and I enjoy today's version of the Ghandi-like Rubin Carter. I thought the movie starring Denzell Washington was very well done. However, by the time I was done reading this sad tale of "woe is me" by a man who only makes excuses and offers no solutions for his actions, I felt like I was holed up in that prison cell with him.

Quite charming and emotional, but lies!!!

This book is a complete distortion of the truth behind the real story of Mr. Carter. The story is told from the side of an angry convict who was constantly in trouble with the law because he was a sociopath who projects his responsibility for his failures on society and the law. Many of his claims are bendings of the truth of what had actually happened to him. For example, he was NOT 11 when he first went to juvenile school for stabbing a pedophile. The real story was that he was 14 and mugged an old man for $55 and his gold watch. I have an original copy of the boxing match between him and Joey Giardello. Giardello was an excellent fighter who was in fact, unable to knock out Carter, but Carter wasn't even close to having the skills of Giardello. The only rounds that Carter won were the first 5 out of all 15 rounds fought. At the time of his first conviction, he was not the #1 contender. He had in fact lost 7 of his last 15 fights which occurred after the loss to Giardello. He was also not an activist; there isn't any evidence to support his claims on that. Also, if he was an activist, why wasn't there any mention of it or any audio/video of it in The Hurricane starring Denzel Washington?... Denzel Washington once said, "This man is love", in reference to Mr. Carter. If Rubin Carter is "love", then why did he and the Canadians and Lazarus, who dedicated several years of their lives to freeing him, sit in separate rows and never spoke one word to each other at the premiere of The Hurricane? Look at the website's truth before you make a judgement. Peace

Superb

Rubin Carter was tremendously courageous and strong hearted. What I really admired about him was he turned all of the negative energy he had stored internally and used it positively. Through his story, it just shows that no matter what, if you are determined to do something and go somewhere in life nothing can stop you. Rubin Carter is trully a heroine of all mankind!

THE SIXTEENTH ROUND

I RECENTLY WENT TO SEE THE MOVIE THE HURRICANE- ABOUT THE LIFE AND INPRISIONMENT OF RUBIN HURRICANE CARTER. I WAS SO EMOTIONALLY MOVED BY HIS STORY, AND HOW HE NEVER GAVE UP HOPE FOR HIS FREEDOM.AMAZON.COM DOES NOT AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME HAVE ANY COPIES AVAILABLE OF THE 16TH ROUND IN STOCK. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD NOTIFY ME IN ABOUT 2WEEKS TO LET ME KNOW IF THE BOOK IS STILL IN EXISTENCE.EXCELLENT MOVIE!DENZEL WILL GET ANOTHER ACADEMY AWARD!

very good book

loved the movie, a great book to read.. sent it to my son and he enjoyed it very much. Hard to set aside once I began reading.

The best book I have ever read!

After watching "The Hurricane" starring Denzel Washington. I started searching for this book, and then finally Amazon started taking pre-orders for it! It's the greatest book I have ever read! I couldn't put it down! I read sometimes all night long! I strongly recommend you to read this book!

No title

I just want to find out what the quote was in the movie regarding the power of writing when Rubin first met Lezra. As a writing teacher, it would be a marvelous quote for a bulletin board. I can't find the book and when I looked in the excerpt, it was not there. Could anyone help me with the quote?

Wow!

I just saw the movie today and boy, did it get to me. I'm only 11 years old too! Rubin Carter is a unique, strong, charactered man. The other innocent guy that was with rubin that night was a great guy too. He could've just said, "I didn't do it." and he would've gotton off the hook. What really kills me is the fact that Rubin was guilty was because he was black! He lost that champion boxing fight because he was black too! Some people are just...well there's really no word for them...oh ya, rasict! I hate those kind of people!

A Must Read

I feel anyone who reads this book will be as unbelieveably moved as I was. I have one wish, just to have a chance to speak with Rubin. Enjoy the book, and God Bless.

Incredible Book!

I can't say enough things about this TRUE story! Everyone should read this great book with some great life lessons in it.

The Fight for what's Right

It will inspire all to fight for what's right ! When you know that you are right, nothing or no one should come in the way of your fight for justice. Rubin's Story has given me a burning desire to succeed in everything I set my mind on !

The movie was amazing, I can't wait to locate the Book

What an amazing story. I only saw the movie but that makes me want to read the book all that much more. I was so moved by this mans story. He never gave up hope and evolved into this amazing, beautiful person. I think reading the book will answer so many more questions for me.

great story

This a great story.please "game of fools" by charles wooten the story of glenn summerford who is still in prison doing a 99 year sentence ffrom a case like hurricanes that consisted of predujuice and lies.

Awesome

This book is a great way to show the world the ways Rubin Carter was wronged. He was an innocent man that was used as a scapegoat. This wonderful man was thankfully later released after a wrongful imprisonment.

Purchased as a gift

I bought this as a gift for my aunt. She loves the book. She is an avid reader of unusual books and specifically mentioned this one. So I got it for her.

He is a hero

I didn't read the book yet but I watched the movie. I think he is a real hero and I think he is very lucky. Without Lesra he wouldn't be able to get out of prison. I must say that I am very deeply touched by his story.

Rubin Crazy

I thought Rubin Carter was very moving. The movie was great also

ridiculous

i have always been a boxing buff and had sympathy for rubin carters "railroading" until i read this book. it reeks of self serving lies. it is a little convenient that he experiences racism and superiority by whites in his life, but when he meets this "hasson" character all the sudden he believes blacks are superior in all aspects. rubin carter is a racist, an opportunist, and from other research possibly a real participant in the lafayette grill murders. please do your own research before paying a cent to this man. and yes i am a cracker.

Movie does not do the story justice.

This book was amazing and I could not put it down.

Fascinating read

I brought this book after hearing its mention on a boxing podcast. I read without really knowing anything about Rubin Carter and his fascinating and at times harrowing story. The writing style is easy to read and paints a very poignant picture of the diversion that existed in society in the 60’s. A highly recommend read for any boxing fan. It’s hard to imagine a tale like this could exist in the modern era.

Heartbreaking, inspiring and shocking are a few words of many that can describe this amazing book

Heartbreaking, inspiring and shocking are a few words of many that can can describe this amazing book which in reality was a plea from the author to the public to rescue him and many black people like him that suffered the full brunt of America's prejudiced and backward justice system in the 50s and 60s. This book will leave you at times incapable of putting it down due to its sheer brutal honesty, dark humor, and the development of the authors life and character in the foul society he survived under. Whats funny, is that we still see remnants of the backward judicial system described by Rubin till this day. Worth the read 100%.

be prepared to feel uncomfortable

A great read if a little uneasy. Have to remember that the book was written a couple of decades ago. So political correctness is some years away. Fascinating & disturbing at the same time. The hurricane did wrong but society did him worse. I couldn't put the book down. If you want a blacks man view, warts and all story, coupled with injustice's growing up in America in the 40's on wards then this is for you

Great book showing the raw truth

This book is a wake up call to all decent law abiding people on how a supposed democratic justice system can be used to further personal and racist ends. It also shows the horrors of the penal system. A true story!

A painful perspective of injustice

This account has a duality. Rubin Carter's life and life for blacks in the 60s. The criminal justice system has treated minorities differently to the mainstream, this book is an explicit description with elements that are shocking.

R i p rubin hurricane carter.

Sadly the injustice rubin carter had delt with in his life is probably going on now all over the world. Because humans can easily be racist and bigoted people sadly . Its a moving autobiography.

Great

Thanks. All. Everything. Very very good thanks a lot. Vt

I watched the film prior to the book which helped gain an insight beforehand, the book in my opinion is a better portrayal, gripping and I never wanted to put it down - recommended to anyone who loves autobiographies or moving stories.

Harrowing true story.

Follows the early year of Rubin " Hurricane" Carter. A harrowing account of the treatment of black men in 1960's Patterson New Jersey. Leads up to the triple murder conviction which saw Carter spend much of his adult life in prison after his framing by racist Police officers and the corrupt American justice system.

the story of Rubin Carter, wrongly jailed for a triple murder, who was a contender for the middleweight boxing crown of the world.

Very insightful

This book was so insightful into the life of black people in America and how the justice system was seemingly based more on their colour rather than the justice system. A very powerful read
