The Silver Way: Techniques, Tips, and Tutorials for Effective Character Design

I have barely dipped my toes into this thick book and I already love it. And it is indeed thick, one of the thickest/biggest art instruction books I have the pleasure of owning. I was surprised by that to be honest, it is a much thicker book than I expected! There is so much fantastic and useful advice in this book, and it's presented in a nice orderly way with tons of great suggestions, tips, and exercises. It's not just a bunch of art with a little text. This book is truly instructional and it is impossible not to learn something from it. I only have ONE complaint and it's not about the content of the book or Mr. Silver's art, but instead it's about the shape of the book: it's quite wide and not tall. I saw the general shape before buying it, but when you combine the shape of the book with the thickness and overall weight, the wider-than-taller shape is both impractical to hold and also makes it difficult to fit in with the rest of the books on a shelf. I really really wish they had not designed the book this way, and I hope future editions will be a more standard shape. That said, if you are on the fence about this book, BUY IT! It is wonderful.

This book has solid tips and techniques for those seeking to work in the animation industry as a character designer. Most of the book covers styles of design that are popular with the top studios but animation is a big field that still has room to grow so don't think that this is the only way to explore design. This book is a helpful tool for both beginning or professional artists. Since animation design is based on observations from life you will want to pick up foundational books on Life Drawing and perspective as well. I recommend all (particularly Drawing for All its Worth & Successful Drawing) of the Andrew Loomis books and the Vilppu Drawing manual for those seriously considering a career in art.

As a professional illustrator, this is a MUST HAVE for artists. Definitely more specifically for character designers, but it does have a lot of lessons for general illustrators. I graduated college with very basic knowledge on character design. I saw that the great Stephen Silver was creating a book for it, and I instantly bought it. A couple of hours of reading and I already learned more about character design than what I learned in college. One of the most important things that I learned from this book is necessary communication through silhouette and shapes. These things will give your characters variety and will help them stand out from the rest. I'm still going through and trying to absorb all the knowledge that it has. Thank you Mr. Silver, I hope to meet you one day! You rock!

so good--I'd compare it to Preston Blair's Animation book since it is another simple but densely informative classic by a master of the art form. So much is covered so clearly--you can read it in a day but will want to re-read it a hundred times since the info is that solid & profound. I have a lot of character design books and this is organised the best--concepts are broken down in a meaningful way and explained well. So much is covered, from process to rendering to turnarounds to character types, basic drawing principles and sources of inspiration. Silver's outside in design approach is mind expanding. This book shows that the author is a real pro who has taught before.

I have purchased a number of drawing books throughout the years, but while most books focus on technique alone, this book also provides considerable space to enhancing the transition from daily thinking about drawing to creating a daily drawing practice. I find this book incredibly inspiring and feel like I have my own personal drawing instructor at my side every time I open it. This book really stands out to me as something incredibly unique and valuable for learning/enhancing skills used in character design. It is the first drawing book I have purchased that made me stop reading and start drawing.

The Silverway breaks down various ways to approach, line, shape and color that help construct characters with personality. Pushing the concepts to show action and creating unique and fun cartoons. This book is the most comprehensive book on the subject. If you are going to buy only one book on drawing cartoons... this is it.

The book is one of my favorite art books. It has clear process for drawing forms, and great advice for developing characters. I love that his text is limited to the nuts and bolts of the skills, and doesn't have the feel of an academic tome with a tedious explanation of concepts. There are more drawings than words in this book. The diagrams and grids are easy to understand and implement. I can't say enough good things about his methods.

Just awesome. Stephen Silver is a legendary caricaturist and character designer, and this book is great. I much prefer this book to the online lectures and tutorials because it's tangible and I can use it more as a reference guide and linger in the sections I like.

Silver is generous with his knowledge sharing. The main point of his theory is using simple, strong shapes to create a structure for your characters. He exposes how these shapes work in his designs. HIs rough drawings show how he "draws through" the shapes to create depth and a believable cartoon anatomy for a design. I have taken a class from him in person and his books are as informative as his lectures.

This is the perfect book to add to anyone's collection who is searching for some small yet life-changing tips for improving your art and character design. So many little things here and there that are substantially useful and bring your work above and beyond. This books approach is very systematic in a way that will Organize your thoughts towards creating many different iterations of a harmonious character design. Very helpful tips and tricks to assist you when you feel as though you have exhausted your ideas to the fullest, only to see that there's other avenues and ways to go into many different routes in telling great stories through creative and appealing characters. In my honest opinion one of the most informative books on the subject out there. If you have Disney's the illusion of life. This book might be the perfect pair to study the art of animation.

This book will be a character design bible book. I have never seen this kind of book before. There are so many important and practical design principles and drawing exercises. Thank you so much for making this great book for artists!!

I love the content of the book. I feel like I’m going to learn a lot from this. The only downside is, when it was delivered to me, the book itself doesn’t have any cover for protection of any kind. And the front & back cover is full of dirt marks. Another thing is, the pages had dog-ears. Because of that, I had to straighten everything out and clean it out myself that’s why it looks neat now.

My sixth grader is into art. And hates reading in general. I told him it's impossible to hate reading even for school. Bought it hasn't put it down since I gave it to him

I'm a professional Illustrator as well as an avid book reader and every time a new book on this topic comes out, I order it from Amazon and although there are a couple of good ones out there, Stephen Silver's is BY FAR the BEST of them all. Here you will find not just a wealth of information on sketching techniques, gestures and construction but also easy-to-follow exercises on every chapter. I have been familiar with Stephen's work for several years now and was excited to find out that this book was about to come out. Just take a look at the table of contents to get an idea of how complete it is! This work is for character designers what Tom Richmond's "Mad Art of Caricature" is to caricature artists. DON'T HESITATE TO ORDER IT!

I was very lucky to get a copy of this book... if you are serious about doing comics it's a must have...

Not what I was expecting but without being able to 'peek inside' I took a chance. There's definitely lots to learn and some great tips if you like to draw more cartoonish features.

Amazing, maybe a not so begginers book, it start with drawing excersices so you had to know or have some knowledge in how to draw, but this book subject cover so many technics for character development and for that it's amazing. I REALLY recomend it!

The most amazing book on character design I have ever purchased. It's filled with everything you need to know for crafting better characters. Of course, you do have to put in the work and effort into it. If you read it and practice what Stephen Silver teaches you, you'll see huge improvements.

This is an excellent character design/caricature book. It's a hefty book for sure, but its packed with creative and valuable lessons for people of all expertise.

There are more drawings in this book than what I've drawn in my entire life. Easily the best book on cartooning and effective character design.

The contents of this book are an incredible source of learning for beginers and advanced artists as well, with clear and straight forward intructions. There's lots of examples of Steve's work. My only complain is that the paperback version is too soft for a book of this dimensions but gets 5 stars anyway because the content is priceless. Great job Steve!

WOW, this is JAMMED PACKED full of information.... I love it. I can't wait till I really get into building my skills now. This book is SO SO worth the money.

Stephen Silver is the teacher's teacher. I've taken his course a few times in-person and on-line and there's a reason why I've dropped cash on many of this man's products. Art is a very challenging subject to give insight into. I mean, how do you have people see things the way you do? Stephen Silver has a knack for that and this book does it well. As an art teacher myself, I love the fact that this book is filled with activities. That's ultra critical and the problem with most guides. Most art tutorial books just give a few easy steps, but this book further breaks down those steps into activities. This book is a total gem and since I've revisited the book so much I spiral-bound it. Do yourself a favor and get it.

I picked this up at Wondercon a few weeks ago as I missed out on the Kickstarter. This us a wonderful book that gives great insight to creating characters full of life and solid design. Definitely a good book for those looking to hone their craft.

I haven't been able to put this book down ever since it arrived in the mail. This is very informative and the best illustration book I've ever bought. Didn't expect it to be as big as it is (if any potential buyers are reading this, each page is a landscape A4) but it didn't disappoint me. 100% would recommend.

Really helpful book. I'm only halfway through it and my drawing has improved. Very clear and informative. Wish I'd bought it sooner, rather than struggling for ages to get more life/movement into my drawings. I highly recommend it.

Os personagens mais marcantes das histórias animadas ou graphic novels só são tão inesquecíveis graças ao seu character design. E Stephen Silver traz todo o conceito por trás disso. Como?! Descreva pontos comportamentais dos seus personagens, traçe formas, comece a atribuir mais características, poses e voilá!!! O livro não é um passo a passo de como desenhar, mão, olhos, pés, bocas e etc...mas é sobre a produção de personagens de forma consciente. Trazendo para ilustração traços que remotem a pesonalidade da personagem. Livro bastante rico, em conteúdo e exemplos (isso você vai encontrar de montão!!!!). Eu ja disse que vale muito a pena?!

I'm a professional caricature artist since 1992, but I'm always learning and experimenting with styles, techniques, different approaches, etc. Just recently, along the last 5 years, I have been working on making my caricature art look more cartoony and funny. I have been looking for someone or some book to teach me how to make my caricatures be more appealing for the general public, but at the same time appealing to myself as a demanding artist looking for clarity in design, beauty and the fun factor in my creations, and I found the answers to all that in this book. I love the way it is structured, full of very useful tips, many of which are easily applied to the art of caricature too, not just for character design, and that is fantastic! A good dio I recommend to anyone interested in the art of caricature would be Tom Richmond's "The Mad Art of Caricature" and this book by Stephen Silver "The Silver Way". Sincerely. Robin Crazy

I've been in animation for over 30 years myself, seen a lot of books on a lot of aspects of animation come and go. This one is different. Stephen Silver is an acknowledged master character designer and caricaturist, he's done dozens of TV cartoons and made numerous characters stand out and stand apart. He simply knows his stuff. This book is thick, heavy and chock full of info, tips, guidance and is like sitting right at his elbow being mentored on this stuff. In my opinion, any 10 pages are worth the price of the book, and it's over 240+ pages long! Look....get it, read it, learn from it, make it yours. If you want to become a cartoonist, become a BETTER cartoonist, his book is 100% win

Compared to many other books about this theme - it really decribes the way good how to come up with good designs. It includes a pile of good examples how to gerate a ide and you can see how the mwthod works and helps yourself to come up with your own routine to do so. The book has more Illustrations than text what I personally prefer. It is NOT about realistic drawing, Just to point out the main points: basic of character design (storey, obseration), some sketching technics,(caricature, flip-it, blur, diferent media, ) his technic he teachs: story, gesture, design, form and details, And the following 5 chapters go into the detail of that. And that very good. If you more into technical general or want to deepen this, with more usefull knowledge, I would recommend you the books from "Scott Robertson" "How to render" or "How to Draw: drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination" and one of the force books from "Michael Mattesi" like "Force - Drawing Human Anatomy". With this set of books (this and the others) you have all the necessary help to come up with your own art and style for character and other design.

Speravo di trovare maggiori riferimenti ai lavori dell'autore, ma probabilmente per questione di diritti non ha potuto inserire immagini di Kim Possible & Co. Peccato. Un testo ottimo per l'introduzione al disegno, poco utile per chi già conosce le tecniche di base.

Might overwhelm a beginner but overall great content! Then again, I am not sure if the intended audience of this book are total beginners - most likely, it is not - as the book is for character design approaches... Some prior drawing experiences, experimentations, etc will help.

Desde el primer capítulo algo se mueve en tu mente y empiezas a obtener mejores resultados al dibujar. Este no es un curso de dibujo, es una guía de como diseñar un personaje a partir de la observación y del ordenamiento de ideas y formas. No me considero un dibujante, pero lo poco que se, empezó a adquirir carácter con las primeras lecciones. Si tu sabes dibujar, wow, no me imagino lo que podrás lograr. Lo recomiendo.

Recently got this book. And man do I love it. It is a treasure for me. The exercises and examples given in this book are really great and helpful. They have been explained properly. Stephen Silver is an amazing character designer and I have been a fan of him since Kim Possible. So this book was a sure buy for me. Highly recommended for any character designer or vis dev artists.

Estoy muy contento con la compra. Me parece un auténtico libro para estudiar por la cantidad de tutoriales y ejercicios que vienen dentro del libro. Muy recomendable para los dibujantes tanto principiantes como los más profesionales y quieren dar un empujón a su dibujo de caricaturas.

Ya me he hecho de varios libros de Design Press Studio y nunca me han decepcionado los contenidos. Silver sin duda sabe mejor que nadie su negocio. Puede que ya conozcas varios principios que vienen, pero el los lleva al siguiente nivel. me ha encantado. Un must en la biblioteca.

No esperaba tanto del libro, pero superó mis expectativas, muy bueno y completo, brinda una metodología efectiva para el diseño de personajes sea cual sea tu estilo. Muy completo y llega en buenas condiciones y en tiempo.

Otro de los clásicos si quieres dibujar, seguir aprendiendo y tener nuevas referencias, este es uno de tus libros.

El mejor libro de diseño de personajes que he visto. Te lleva paso a paso por su metodo para crear personajes. En la primera seccion te explica como moldear el personaje completo y explica alguna reglas importantes de diseño. En las secciones posteriores habla del diseño de caras , niños y por ultimo, animales.

Un libro che ogni animatore/character designer dovrebbe avere ...seguendo i consigli e applicando le tecniche che si approfondiscono in ogni capitolo,si migliora l’approccio che si ha nella creazione di personaggi. Consigliato!

I have over 200 art books in my collection, this is now my favourite book. It explains character design in a clear, fun and precise way. Covers all the theory you need so that you can apply the knowledge to your own characters. Illustrations are great, can't recommend this book enough! Just buy it :)
