A painfully honest story of human weakness and God's unending forgiveness.

Thirteen years ago, amidst scandal, sin, and shattered lives, Michael English fell from the pinnacle of the Christian music world. In 1994, newspapers around the world blared the headline, "Gospel Singer Named Artist of the Year Turns in His Awards After Confirming He Had an Affair with a Fellow Married Singer." From 1994 to 2002 Michael English's life went from bad to worse. Public shame, divorce, broken relationships, drug addiction, even homelessness. But in 2002, God reached out and rescued Michael from himself. Today Michael is whole again, and in this book he tells his story of redemption.

wow! I am crying like a baby

This is just amazing. I was working at a Christian bookstore in 1993 when the news of the affair broke. As stated in the book, we pulled everything related to Michael out of the store. 25+ years later, I recall being so angry that the Christians were being anything but Christ-like. Still bugs me...perhaps more now. I had no idea how much this poor man had been through (Ed!!!! UGH). His humanity took over, and he lost it all, except for a few dear friends. I was very glad to read that. I assumed Bill Gaither did what everyone else had - abandoned a friend and fellow believer when he fell below rock bottom. I haven't read a book from cover to cover in about 15 years because of executive functioning problems in my brain. I finished this book in two days!!!!! I've already started reading it again.

This is a GOD thing

I have listened to Southern Gospel all of my life. I grew up on the same “soundtrack” as Michael and I understand the dynamics of Christians who claim the faith vs. those who walk the faith. When reading the reviews on this book, one reviewer called the book bad... I wanted to read it all the more. This book is anything but bad. This honest account of one man’s struggle is real life. Life can be ugly and horrible, but with God, life can be beautiful even in the ugliness. I find it absolutely refreshing to read the honest struggle and the determined pursuit of finding and accepting God’s grace, favor and guidance through addictions that many of us know very little about. This book shows that one small decision can affect so many facets in ones own life, not to mention the lives of others. I am highly recommending this book. We are ALL sinners saved by grace. Michael is no different and is one brave heart to bare his life for all to mock or embrace. I choose the latter.

Divorce, Drugs, Detox and Divine Redemption

Having been a fan of Southern Gospel music since childhood, and marrying into a family of local Southern Gospel Quartet “royalty,” I was no stranger to the twisted tale of Michael English’s fall from Grace. I didn’t know the specifics, just that there was a woman, a divorce and some drugs and eventually he came back to where I knew him best, on stage with Bill Gaither, the Vocal Band and the Homecoming Friends. I devoured this book in one day. I found myself watching Michael’s performances one afternoon and thought to myself, surely there’s a book about his struggles. Sure enough, a google search produced this title, and before I knew it I was hip deep in Michael’s story. In this autobiography Michael takes us from his tumultuous childhood in North East, North Carolina, a town he says was so small it didn’t warrant a name, only a direction, through the beginnings of his gospel music career, his big breaks, the height of his stardom, the depths of his despair and at last to the glory on the other side. Michael opens the book with a vivid, terrifying description of what drug detox is really like, and in later chapters he goes into great detail about his drug habits. His $400 a day painkiller addiction. He talks about the affair that brought down his superstardom, ended marriages and ruined careers. He dives into deep childhood trauma, abuse, addiction, a feeling of worthlessness. He tells us about his mistakes, and bears his heart, never sugarcoating or trying to justify his actions. He simply tells it like it was, and is, and makes it quite clear that the old song is true: “I’m not perfect, I’m just forgiven.” For fans of Michael English, or for anyone looking to read a true account of a life redeemed, this is 5 stars! Michael English stands today as a true testament to the will of God, to the life altering power of the love of God and to the purity of a heart mended, and is once again a powerhouse performer in the rhealm of Christian and Gospel Music.

I love Michael English's voice..

What I didn't realize was the trials and tribulations that he has been through in his life. Reading the book gave me a lot more insight into what all he has been through and a lot more respect for the man. I actually enjoy hearing his performances now knowing all he has allowed God to bring him through. My only reason for the 4 star ( instead of 5) is since Sandy Patti came out with her 1st ( and subsequent others) there seems to be a rush from all these singers and stars to publish a book and sometimes it feels ( not in this particular book) that some are doing it just to revive their dying career. And although as I said, I don't think that is the case with this book, I am cynical enough to withhold a star just in case. Other than that, it is a good read.

Will He Reach Down for Me Too?

I read a few pages and then hid the book because I thought I couldn't relate to the experiences. Bothered by the intense personal reaction, I picked it up again but could not put it down. I found it deeply disturbing because it reflected the depth of my pain, despair and isolation that I carried for so long. And when I realized that I could not appreciate the depths from which this child of God ascended to experience the redeeming Love of Christ if it were not for the courage to be completely transparent, I then realized that his testimony was a message to me. There were many details that as a healthcare professional, the truth of which I could validate and also appreciate the enormity of God's mercy. Individuals who have never walked the road cannot testify effectively of the breadth of God's Love nor His enduring desire for us to return home. Reading this book broke through every wall that I had hid behind and encouraged me to just reach past the pain to the real and true Father. Shortly after reading this book that upset my tidy but simmering emotions, I had a life-changing encounter with My Lord. For God, You bent down and lifted Michael up, would you do that for me too? It was the story of wandering into the wilderness & the degree to which God has gone to redeem us that pierced more than 42 years of demonic lies and darkest depressive bondage that was barely circling the drain. Now I don't wonder how much longer before I make my final descent or whether I should give the enemy a helping hand, I am restored and living in His Love. How could I have believed that God would welcome others & not myself? I pray that God will continue to minister through Michael English, there are so many who need to be reassured of His saving Grace.

A Place Called Hope

This is an in-your-face, eye-opening story of a man who was at the top of the music business with an incredible singing voice, and then hit rock bottom, before he was able to find his way back. I give Michael English all the credit in the world for not sugar coating anything that happened. The story couldn’t have been told any better. I read it in two sittings. This book will appeal to musicians and music fans alike. If not properly grounded, fame can be a dangerous thing. Also, putting an actor, sports figure or artist, yet alone a Christian artist, on a pedestal can be heartbreaking as they are human and no less susceptible to temptation than the non-famous person. Michael English had it all and shortly after sweeping the Dove Awards was basically blackballed from the Christian Music Industry. Radio stations banned his music and Christian book stores removed all his recordings from their shelves. An extra-marital affair caused an avalanche of chaos in Michael’s life, going from one bad decision to another. I was a fan of Michael at the time the news of the affair was made public and the reaction from the Christian community made me question my own belief and whether I wanted to be associated with a judgmental group of people that were anything but Christ-like. After all, I made my share of mistakes with drugs and a bad marriage. Even after I had my conversion experience in 1982, I continued making bad choices. Belief in Christ by no means makes you perfect. All we can do is learn from our mistakes, even if it means going through hell before we get it right. God will never truly abandon anyone who seeks his help. This book explores Michael’s childhood, his relationship with his parents and how he became a Southern Gospel Singer and then a CCM artist. There are things in this book that will surprise you and perhaps shock you. To me, it showed guts for Michael to bare his soul the way he did. You get a taste of Michael English the person as opposed to Michael English the artist. Even in Michaels’s darkest hour, the God that I believe in did not turn away from him when others had already written him off. Michael has a God-given talent and his music was and still is being used to minister to others, even when Michael didn’t think it did and he was sort of just going through the motions. The music business can be a crazy and dangerous way of life. It’s not all glamour and the charmed life that you may think it is. I know, as my wife is a singer/songwriter and plays guitar and I’m exposed to behind the scenes of what the average fan doesn’t see or hear. So, I applaud Michael for his courage with telling his story, which I found extremely fascinating. It shows that no matter what there is still a place called hope.

Michael English doesn't hold back.

I found this book to be very open and honest. He really takes us through his life until now and doesn't hold back (as far as I can tell) on anything that's happened to him. His conversion was a lot like mine in that it was more out of fear than love. It has taken me a long time to reconcile my salvation because of this and it seems he struggled with this also. You could tell from his childhood why he had many of the problems he did. It was difficult to read some of the things he put himself through and the choices he made. Woke me up to the sin that goes on in all areas of entertainment, the Christian market being no exception. As Michael said, we are human beings and not free from temptation, just need to run from it and keep running. I would encourage reading this if you need the encouragement that comes from going to the bottom of the pit --- and learning through Michael's story that God never quits on us, we just quit on God, but He's always there to offer us hope and Himself. I feel sad that Michael had to go through what he did, but if it brought him to where he is, that's the uplifting part of the story. I am old enough to be Michael's mother, but I was just getting to know his music when he fell from grace. He is definitely one of my favorites, he has a voice that can only be God given. And it seems like now, after all the pretense, he has truly learned to sing for the GLORY OF THE LORD. Keep looking up Michael English so we can always appreciate your God given talent.

A Remarkable Story of Sin, Grace, and God's Pursuit of His Children

This book came out almost four years ago, so why read and review now? Well sometimes I like to read books that are older that perhaps I wanted to read in the past but never had the chance. The backstory is that my wife and I attended a Gaither Homecoming a few weeks ago and I heard Michael English share his story of redemption live. I had the chance to meet Michael afterword. There was something about hearing his story that provoked in me the desire to hear more about it beyond the news clips and assumptions and gossip I'd heard when his issues were in the news. So while my wife was using the restroom at the concert during intermission, I used the Amazon app on my iPhone to buy a used copy of the book. Then I read it in a couple of days. What I found in English's story was far different than I expected. When Michael fell from grace in the 90's due to an affair with another singer, I reacted with the typical mix of judgement and anger. I castigated all of contemporary music as one big fraud. Then when he continued to make the news with arrests and other behavior, that added more weight to my opinion. So when his book came out in 2008, I sort did an eye-roll. Whatever, now he wants to sing again? When Bill Gaither asked him to rejoin the Gaither Vocal Band, I wondered if this was a good idea. But hearing Michael sing--my wife and I typically watch the Gaither homecomings--and now seeing him life has given me a different perspective. Michael seems genuinely humbled and grateful for his second chance and his life is a picture of God's amazing grace. So I began reading this book with fresh eyes. And I was surprised by the content of the book. This is not a man giving excuses for his behavior, this is a man genuinely repentant, humbled, and full of grace. He is surprisingly candid about his poor choices. offers no excuses or justifications, and is thoroughly sorry for the people he hurt. He's also very honest about the trappings of being a Christian celebrity and how easy it is to hide your real self. It's a gut-wrenching read in many parts. Michael spares no detail in describing his journey through addiction to prescription drugs. He talks of the ups and downs, the fits and starts, the depths to which an addict plunges in his quest to satisfy himself. This is a wonderful book, a remarkable story of God's pursuit of his children, through the mire and the muck. It's a beautiful story of God's great grace in restoring what sin destroys. I highly recommend it.

What a great story!!!

I fought back a few tears reading this book, I have been some of the places Michael has been in, he is so inspiring. What a great and mighty God we have. I pray that Michael will be delivered forever. And like the song goes "The God Of The Mountain is The God Of The Valley. Keep on singing Michael.

It was a gift for my sister who is has real understanding of loss. And she has been in hospital for over a month unconscious from complications in surgery. She has had a miraculous turnaround in her condition! She doesn't know it yet because she's still in intensive recovery rehab. But this book comforted her before she went in for her surgery. She had discovered his music a few months prior and wanted everything she could get to complete the story of his life. So it was well received & she will again enjoy his music as well I'm sure.

Michael English at his most transparent

As one who took the same sort of path of Michael chose for a time, I can appreciate his honesty and willingness to tell the truth. The grace of God extends to those who have wandered far and returned, and God uses this for His glory. Michael's story provided insight for me into the life of my son who is still "out there" deceiving himself and everyone else. Michael's story reminds me that because if Jesus I have hope that my son will one day walk back into the arms of His Saviour and Lord. To some Michael's story may seem too graphic and dirty. Folks, that's what our lives can become should be choose to follow our own desires rather than operate out of obedience regardless of how we feel. It is only as I am willing to be completely honest and transparent that others can look at my life and have hope for themselves and those for whom their hearts break. I'm glad Michael is home and I pray he chooses to stay home.

His book The Prodigal Comes Home is awesome. What courage to admit that he is a sinner just as we all are. God forgives and is a "God of second chances." To be a Christian is to understand that we all make mistakes and we all can be forgiven if we repent. His book tells the whole story of a broken man who receives God's grace. It is beautiful. We love you Michael, the Bible says that if we break one of the commandments we are sinners. So. . .this means everyone is. We are glad that you found your way back to Christ. God bless you and your family.

What a truth proclaimed: God moves in mysterious ways!

The frankness of relating this true story is augmented by the refreshing stories of time spent in Gospel music's bands and the talented individuals he met and mingled with back then. The best aspect of this story to me was this: Mr. English's storied rise to the top of CCM was not in reality sought after; having ADHD affected him that way. And the ensuing aftermath of his fall after making poor decisions was only as low as was needed to wake him out of his proud condition. No higher and no lower than was needed was the theme which merged our stories to Michael's as people of God who found mercy.

Totally unexpected!

I was surprised and disappointed when I heard the news about Michael English's indescretion and how it affected his own life, family, career and those of several others. For years I wondered what was happening to him and where he was spiritually. I saw this book and ordered it for my husband. We sort of read it together. It was brutally honest and very discriptive. I appreciated that aspect so much because it gave the reader a glimpse into how dangerous and far-reaching sinful decisions can be. He went about as low as a person can go...from the top of a career to the slimey bottom. Thankfully there is a wonderful ending which clearly shows the never-ending love of Christ and that He never gives up on us. I'm thankful he decided to write his story.

Wonderful message of hope.

I would recommend this to anyone going through tough times. What a message of hope when he was clearly rock bottom. God remained in his life to bring him back to share that message. Never give up on God.

Heart warming testimony

It takes a big person to open up their life to such Scrutiny. When I found his music it made me want more of his story. So glad he is able to share with us and he will continue to be an inspiration.

Redemption story

I am old enough to remember the choices that brought Michael English to write this book. I am grateful to be able to see this side of his redemption story. It holds no punches and gives all glory to God. Well written and an enjoyable read.

Great Inspirational Story!

I realize I am a little late jumping on the Michael English train and I admit that I never read auto-biographies but after listening to his music for the last 4 years I felt I needed to know his story. I read a lot of the reviews and now that I have read the book I am wondering about past comments, and I wondered if I read the same book as the skeptics did? This is a great story about his spiritual and personal journey I will also say that I cried through most of it, knowing what he went through and still came out on the other side, to become the beautiful inspiration that he is today. For those who are skeptical all I can say is go onto YouTube and watch older videos of him singing live and the newer ones from 2010 on, you can fake a lot of things but you cannot fake Joy and he looks truly joyous when he sings and talks to people, you can also see a light in him that was not there before. The book at times is gritty and heartbreaking but it is his brutal honesty that makes the outcome and how he currently lives his life all that more inspirational. He found his way back to God and life and when I finished reading the book I said a prayer to God and Michael thanking them for not giving up!

God's grace is sufficient

Why do we go through struggles in life and stray so far away from God that it seems we are unredeemable? If Michael's story teaches us anything, it is that we should never give up on praying--for ourselves, for our family and friends. God's timing is not our timing. He's ALWAYS working on our behalf. His plan is mysterious, but we can trust in Him. Thank you, Michael, for being so brutally honest. Your music and your story are a lighthouse of hope to the many who need to hear it. What the world doesn't GET is that Christians are human, and we fail too. But GOD LOVES. Period. Your testimony, and the way your music reaches down inside people and lifts them up, is always going to be "fresh" and necessary for someone to hear. Be blessed, as you have blessed me.

A prodigal son requires a loving, patient Father

Most of have some kind of addiction that is harmless, or completely consuming and destructive, and all things in between. Michael's journey, as told, is the latter. The importance of this book is not the slow painful story of a man destroying himself, and being "saved", but is an honest, raw look inside a human beings soul, laying everything at the foot of the cross, for the world to see, to hopefully stop someone else from becoming a prodigal son. In excellent read that reassures us that through Him all things are possible.

What a prodigal journey!

Mark Lowry once said on the stage that the only difference between them and the folks in the audience was about 3 feet...he wasn’t joking that one time! This boy who had such a gift to bring to folks to stir their souls toGod tried as hard as he could to pitch it in the trash a whole lot of times, but God didn’t give up on him, and Michael bares his messy closet to let us know that if God loved him back from where he’d fallen, He can love anyone back into His Arms...we are all broken vessels, and Michael’s journey and this book chronicling it points the reader to the ultimate solution, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Everyone Needs to Hear Michael’s Story

We are all prodigals in one way or another. We are encouraged to love the sinner and hate the sin. It’s easy to write off a sinner. I am thankful for the example of those who loved and reached out when he was in the pits of despair. He is our only hope and deliverance! Thank you for sharing!

A very gifted singer who thru God's love was pulled from the grip of hell.

It is my hope that anyone wanting to read the book just to learn the details of his downfall, will finish the last chapter with the feeling that this gifted singer laid open a lot more wrenching reality of what had transpired in his past. Bravo Michael. Thank the Lord his story will give hope.

Salvation is wonderful!

Thank you Michael for writing this book. The struggles you went through are amazing. I am thankful you found the real God. Bless you and your family!

Great book. Michael's story from what fame can do ...

Great book. Michael's story from what fame can do when you forget that God put you there and you didn't use that fame to glorify Jesus. The fall from grace was pretty severe for Michael, but God had new plans for him and he found his way back to the Lord. Now he has a new life, is a grandfather and his family is back in his life and he lives that life for God everyday. I read this book in one day. I did not want to stop reading until I saw how the book ended which was actually the story of a new beginning when you obey God and follow what God's teachings in your life everyday

Great read

Great project frm Michael - the story of his struggle to find his way back -- WITHOUT depending or having any "Christians' to help him. I find it horrible that those who even now think they "prayed" for him never bothered to give him anything to eat --- but that sadly is how the church is - we kick and kill our wounded. Michael even came back to work and be associated with some that hurt him the worse - only to be hurt more.

Michael English Get's REAL!

I am not a big reader (I might read 4 books a year). Michael's book is written with very short chapters. But I felt like I couldn't put the book down, it was that good! Highly recommended if you know anything about this man. He get's honest with his reader's and battles his thoughts of being a Christian or not. I got a little depressed with the book coming to a close. Would love a "part 2" book to bring it up to date. I guess I will have to wait for that. Anyways a very good read!

A MUST read!

I love Michael English and this book did not disappoint! This book is a MUST READ for anyone, but especially for someone who has gone through the pits of hell and are trying to get themselves back up. It shows just how merciful and loving our God truly is. It is an inspirational book for all! God Bless Michael and his ministry. AND I am so thankful he wrote this book!

SO MUCH MORE GREATER WAS THE STORY OF HIS REDEMPTION THROUGH THE LOVE, POWER AND MERCY OF GOD

THANK YOU MICHAEL FOR SHARING YOUR STORY. VERY MOVING AND MOTIVATING, AS DEVASTATING AS THE STORY WAS OF MICHAEL'S FAILURE, SO MUCH MORE GREATER WAS THE STORY OF HIS REDEMPTION THROUGH THE LOVE, POWER AND MERCY OF GOD. A MUST READ FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN, AND FOR ANYONE WHO IS GOING THROUGH A STRUGGLE AND CAN'T SEE THEIR WAY OUT. GOD CAN AND WILL BREAK EVERY CHAIN THATS HOLDING US IN BONDAGE, DONT' GIVE UP. HE WILL SEE US THROUGH. THANKS AGAIN MICHAEL FOR YOUR TRANSPARENCY AND BOLDNESS TO BE A WITNESS OF GOD'S GRACE AND MERCY.

With a Heart for the Hurting, Michael English bares his soul, his struggles, successes and failures to us! For great reason!

~Michael English: THE most gifted singer ever, felt lead to pen his experiences of his highest hilltops to his lowest valleys! From having it all to losing to all! But there's so much more to this story, to this man, that people are deeply moved by, are feeling so comfortable with, and it's CHANGING LIVES!!! Whether you know someone struggling through love, faith, addiction, and hearing from God, or its for you yourself, you'll quickly see, on the first page of this book, why this story is capturing audiences very where! In hopes that TBN turns this story in to a movie, pray it does (and if you are led, write to TBn requesting th movie) because there are countless MILLIONS who desparetely need to hear Michael's unusual story, but not so unusual that it couldn't happen to any of us! An EXCELLENT read, you WONT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN! ~As a vocalist, the Christian world KNOWS there is none better than Michael English! Every CD, concert, performance, TV show, and yes, a personally written book, does NOT disappoint! ~His Music: Listen to Michael English sing, BETTER YET, SEE him sing and you're suddenly caught up, as he swoons and swells, belts out and buttons up, with soft and powerful diction, his music, as NO OTHER can. ~"Michael English's GREATEST HITS"... WOW! Is a sampling of the best! But don't stop there! Since this CD, Michael English has recorded MORE incredible CDs' either solo or with The Gaither Vocal Band. You will also find him on loads of performances as an Accompanist, Producer, Background vocals, even Movie tracks, and yes, an Author HIMSELF! Search these out. You'll be so glad you did. ~Michael English's Book: "The Prodigal Comes Home" which is sweeping the masses with its total relevancy to human err, love, faith, humility, even addiction, while proving that God does not speak to all of us the same way! From "having it all" to "losing it all" to... (You'll have to read it to find out. Lol) ~Greatest Vocalist Ever: Michael English is by far the greatest vocalist ever! (Reserving only a few spots for Elvis and Michael Jackson, maybe Lol,) and that's not all! To watch him sing is another gift in itself! From Christian leaders to church goers, they have all said that "Michael English has a way of CONNECTING with ALL of the audience." ~ How he does it? It MUST be God! Michael English's singing and performances are like no other! I've often TRIED to describe his vocals. The best I can come up with is, "It's like he's singing every word as if each word is a song in itself!" In every vocal number Michael will capture you with-in the first few words! As you listen on, (and you will) you'll hear so many wonderful singing variations you'll feel as if you didn't pay enough for all these voices! And you'll NEVER say to yourself, "Ooh, that note wasn't quite the best", like we do with even our most favorite singers! Because EVERY NOTE IS THE BEST! Sorry, it's just true. ~The Listening Experience: Listening and watching him sing is like riding on a roller coaster! You're heart will pound for joy for what comes next; At times either slowly climbing up, as Michael softly and sweetly, with perfect diction, builds the lyrics! Or by suddenly SWOOPING DOWN THE TRACK with hands lifted high in sheer excitement of the soul! It's very cool to watch him when he does that cool dip thing with his knee, while vocally digging DEEP, then BELTS OUT the highlights of the "Message" of the song with more power than you've ever heard! (Most certainly the VIP of what is received from his ministry of music, whether you came for it or not.) ~No matter how you describe your experience from hearing Michael English's voice, I know you'll feel the excitement of not only a seasoned professional, but an extremely gifted, multi-talented, diverse vocalist with the richest baritones you've ever heard to the highest Motown-type vocals that suddenly shoot out and shock! ~As I just gave you a blip, here I will say, Michael English has a vocal range other male singers can only wish for! Because of this range, AND the plethora of different tones his voice has; deep and gritty like the Blues, bold and boisterous that gives goose bumps (and swoop you on that roller coaster ride lol!), soul-full and sweeter than soul music itself, even a JAZZ style, he WILL blow you away! IM NOT DONE YET! ~AHeart For the Hurting: Michael English also has a HEART for God and a heart for hurting people. This man could have taken the road of stardom and fame years ago, singing what others told him to sing, taking in millions, and sitting back resting on his talent alone. Yet because he is the true blue Christian man that he is, he stays humble, dedicating all he sings to the direction of the Lord, which may (?) reach less people but reaches them far deeper and reaches them for ETERNITY! Michael doesn't look for but knows, that from The Word, (The Bible) his pay-back is and will be received from God Himself, which is far richer than this world could ever offer! (Personally I believe, because of his humility, Michael English may not even realize just how gifted he really is!) but maybe we'll just keep it this way. read on... ~Response to Fans: Michael English amazes me when he often responds to fans PERSONALLY, and patiently allows pictures to be taken with his fans at his many concerts, freely swiping his permanent marker with his John Hancock as fans stand in line for these treats! ~His Gospel Album is phenomenal! He often says it is his "favorite"! I'm glad HE can pick a favorite! I can't! But then again, he could sing the Alphabet and still bring everyone to their feet and faces would be streaked with tears of joy! ~In a nut shell... (Lol) ANYTHING by Michael English, especially his own penned song, "Heaven", will never disappoint! Enjoy! And get ready, If you're not already a Michael English fan, you WILL be! ~ Find Michael on: Twitter @MEnglish001 or his web site, www.MichaelEnglishMusic.com. Contact the web site for a concert near you! ~New Show on TBN: Don't miss his NEW SHOW on TBN, "The Michael English Show" which started in September 2014, on Saturday nights, or Sunday mornings, depending on your time zone. You can also get the TBN app and catch up on the shows via iTBN, on demand. ~ Enjoy! I'll be thinking of you as I enjoy too!

Amazing story of recovery and redemption.

Many thanks to Michael English for sharing his story of painful addiction and really climbing his way out of the dregs of what drug addiction does to one's life. His open honesty is to be commended. God bless you Michael.

Intriguing story of the power of prescription pain killers and the power of God's redemption.

Michael begins his story by telling about his upbringing in the hills of North Carolina. He was blessed with the gift of singing. In my opinion he is a great singer. The story tells about the tolerant actions and forgiving spirit of Bill Gaither. One revealing and disturbing story was about his stay in rehabilitation. He met new friends there and after the rehab was over Michael and his friends met often as a support group. Unfortunately one of the friends began bringing pills to the meetings and Michael began popping the pills again. The confession of his affair with another singer was riveting and perhaps unique. The one incident of intimacy resulted in a baby which eventually died during miscarriage.Often these affairs are excused as "it was not planned; just happened". Not with this affair. Both Michael and his married lover admitted that they had thought about pursuing the affair for months. The revelation of the affair decimated his singing career, ended his marriage, and propelled him to the abuse and addiction of prescription drugs.Eventually Michael came home to God and re-established his christian singing career. This story should be read by anyone who is taking pain killers. Proceed with extreme caution in order to avoid addiction.

Love to hear him sing and anyone can make a mistake

Reading now. Learned things above Michael I didn’t know

This book was a easy read, a clear understandinthg of what Michael went through. I would recommend this book to anyone who is go

This book is a easy read, a clear understanding of all Michael went through during recovery, relapse and recovery again. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who is fighting an addition...

Awesome story of just how much God loves

Heard Michael sing in person just last night. There is an annointing covering him. His story and walk with God is real.

Inspireing

This book is a painfully honest and very touching story of a fall from grace and a return to faith. Michael holds back nothing and blames no one else for his fall in to precption drug addiction, recovery, backslide and final recovery with Gods grace and help. I was touched and inspired and would recomend this book to anyone who wants an honest look at sin redemption and grace from a man who has been there

Must read

Look at Michael's performances before, then access those with the Vocal band with David, Wes, and Mark and the difference will burn the reality of God in his life. God has made him whole.

Interesting & heartbreaking read.

Interesting & heartbreaking read, but joyful reading of God's love & refusal to give up on a lost soul.

A story of redemption

I read this in no time. It had me from page 1 and I couldn’t put it down. So glad Michael made it through and found his way.

Lives can be transformed

This story revealed how God's love and transforming power can lift us up out of our lowest pit. Thank you Michael English for being willing to share your life with the world.

Awesome

What a life Michael English has led. I never knew the whole story of his life. This is a gripping story of being on top of the world, and then going down to the pit of hell. I'm thankful with God's mercy and grace he has come back to a life with Christ. I would recommend this book to everyone. You don't have to be a drug addict to appreciate what he has gone thru. I wish him all the best.

From the Heart

Michael’s book really spoke to me. Gospel music speaks to me as it does Michael. His openness about falling from the top and coming back to God is a great testimony of hope to anyone who reads it

Good

Good read. He held back nothing.

Michael English book was so amazing. It talks about his struggles and how he over come addiction. How he asked God to help him in his time of need. With the love of God you can do anything. God died on the cross and paid for us. John 3:16, for God so loved the world. He gave is only begotten son.

Honest, heartfelt and full of hope

I liked how Michael wrote about his issues without self pity and excuses. I loved that there was a happy ending and so full of hope and encouragement for others

To God Be the Glory....

I really loved the book and I'm very thankful that Michael has come back to God and found happiness in his life. His talent is amazing... And God given...!

Uplifting!

Makes me LOVE Michael English even more. We need more people sharing their stories like this. No ones life is perfect, we all struggle and I believe God is the only answer.

Inspiring Book

I am a big fan of Michael English. Reading his biography was an inspiration to me. The courage it took for him to lay it all out there for everyone to see is amazing!! He has gained my respect for his bravery and courage which he makes very clear came from God!!!. To see anyone turn their life around like that has to come from God! No man can do that by himself! This is the most interesting book I have read in a long time. It is so wonderful to see that Christian singer's do believe in what they are singing about and are not ashamed to say it to the world, even though they know they may be "persecuted" by some people, just like Jesus was for their beliefs. Praise the Lord they are still singing God's praises!! I love ordering from Amazon.com because they have good products and are fast, and do what they say they will do. Very dependable company!

Prodigal Comes Home book

great read

Great Read

Been a fan of Michael's music for many years. Living in Nashville had heard/seen lots of his 'troubles' on the news here. However, this book delves much deeper, with lots of details. I thought it was a very fascinating read that certainly kept my attention. Any Michael fan will love it and appreciate his honesty and celebrate his triumph. His voice is a true gift from God and the music world NEEDS him.

The Prodigal comes home.

This book is fantastic. He warms your heart to know that Michael strayed away; but in due time; he came back to his first love and it shows he has won awards again already because he is such a awesome singer and loves the Lord and that is all it takes.

Awesome

Michael was at our church, First Baptist, Pasadena, TX. I was so moved by his testimony that I knew I had to read the full story. This is one awesome book on how our God can change a life and that His love is unconditional no matter how far away we stray. Great book.

Amazing, gut wrenching story of forgiveness and blessing

I was amazed at the honesty and raw details of Michael's life. I admire him for sharing his issues of ADD, abuse, addiction and fall from grace. The writer did an amazing job of conveying Michael's pain and emotion. Great book for anyone looking for hope and freedom from life's issues. It tells us we serve a God of second chances.

restoration

The book is not very long. I read it in one night, and will doubtless read it again, once I get through passing it around. It touched my heart. He touches my heart. His situation was something that I do not even fully comprehend. It is such a blessing to see him now. What a difference, (to me anyhow). So glad I bought it, and I appreciate his telling it. The way he sang Daystar, with the help of Guy and Wes, -on the Bonus provided on Volume 1 of the GVB Reunion video- is so very beautiful. What a great song about God's wonderful Grace, and who better to sing it. That song was what made me want to read his story. God bless you Michael English. And praise be to the One who brought you out.

We just really do knot know what a Mighty Wonderfui Loving Heavenly Father we have. This testimony has so blessed my heart, I am so glad for Michael's residue. Thank you Jesus,To All that are weary let them come and drink from the fountain of Life

.I wish every one could know what a loving merciful Lord and Saviour we have. The Love of God truly is greater far than pen or tongue can tell.

Coming Back Home

This is a book that everyone should read. It gives a message of hope. Everyone is tempted in life, but straying from the path you should take, no matter how much you fall from grace, will not keep you crushed and overwhelmed by your decisions forever. You should always know that just like in the Wizard of Oz, there's no place like home and you can go back there!

Enjoyed every word.

Great easy read. Michael holds nothing back in his extraordinary journey from the abyss to the altar. I enjoyed Every word.

WOW!

I feel so blessed! Thank you, Michael, for sharing God's testimony. The pure honesty touched my soul. Being a recovering addict my self, I could relate in so many ways and feel the joy of pure surrender to our loving God.

Very brave man to do what he did

It was only hard to read because of the tragic things Mike has put himself through. The honesty was so amazing and I have been where he was so I know it must have been very difficult to expose his life the way he did. He, in my estimation could not have a bigger fan than me. However, I know that he knows that it will be an hour to hour struggle for the rest of his life (us Rx junkies cannot fool each other either because it is so easy to break the "rule" about prescription meds. The harder drugs are not as difficult to avoid.) I hope he has an accountability friend that k owe what he knows so that he doesn't slip. He has a high probability of making a mistake here or there unless he has someone every day he can Skype with or whatever it is called. I would have my friend give me drug screens every week. Only way I could make it would to do it that way. Praying for Michael. He has great talent.

Honest and Refreshing.

This is a great read for anyone dealing with the guilt and confusion that comes from failing God, friends, family and self. The message is clear. "If God never gives up on us, the we should never give up either."

Great book!

My absolute favorite book. I’ve read it a few times now. Such a beautiful and relatable story. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

The grace factor

Amazing story of how fame and fortune can lead to destruction if not handled properly. However, there is what I like to call the grace factor, which is where the Lord steps in, dusts us off and makes us new again. That is what happened to Michael English.

The Prodigal Comes Home

This book is so Very Good ! I read it in two days , I could'nt put it down ! I want several people to read ,but I'm afraid they will forget to return it ! I really liked him naming the cities that I had been in ,the singers he sang with made it so interesting ! Also I was born in North Carolina ! And Nashville is mentioned alot. Its just an honest , down to earth story about a mans trials & tribulations that just happens to " Sing Like An ANGEL " !!! I will actually be reading it again !

Awesome book!

This book was awesome! Michael tells about the amazing grace of god in his life. I truly believe he is redeemed. I have saw him in concert this year and just saw him on TBN yesterday (Aug. 14, 2008). I saw him pray and even cry while giving his testimony. I'm a huge Michael English fan, but have never seen him so sincere. I'm so proud of him that he is back to singing. He has such a great talent. His book gives you great detail of everything he went through. Very easy book to read in two days.

Eye opening

I knew this man as a child. Eye opening and honest.

An Amazing Read

I have been a Michael English fan for many years. I think that many times, the general public views celebrities as "larger than life", when in reality, they are just like anyone else. This is an incredible story of how the demons of drug abuse/addiction, lust and other temptations can take down even the ones that we unfairly view as being the strongest among us. What is more amazing is how the love of God delivered Michael from his addiction and how he has given him a new start to an incredible journey. God speed, Michael.

Five Stars

Wonderful book

Will read over and over

This book is real. Only God can bring anyone through this and make it a blessing for His cause. The reason it works is because Michael has given himself over to be used of God.

Well written great book

I thank God for Michael. His music is a fabulous. And now his testimony is fabulous, and a great help to a multitude of other people who suffer the same problem.

Awesome book

Story of hope forgiveness love and grace. Michael English is truly the Prodigal Son. Everyone with a substance abuse problem needs to hear his story.

Great book

This is an awesome book -- what an encouragement

Five Stars

What a revelation of God's grace and mercy! This is a must read for anyone going through addiction. Or, parents dealing with a c

The book is very moving! I definitely will encourage others to read it. The reading was so intense I couldn't put it Dow.

Easy read

Good book

What a story!

What an amazing story! As a fan of his music, I appreciate Michael's willingness to share his journey and how God transformed his life.

Great book!

I already had this book and ordered this one as a gift for my sister for her birthday. Michael English is one of our favorite singers and his honesty in telling this story should be an inspiration to anyone who reads it.

Glad Michael English found his way back.

This story was sad to read. Seeing how low a person could go because of addiction. But, so glad that he found his way back and is singing with the Gaithers Vocal Group again. I just wish his book went a little further on his recovery.

The Prodigal Comes Home

Great service. I loved this book. It was well written and showed such emotion. I think Michael English is a sweet, loving godly man. I hope his book helps others who are struggling in this busy world. We must be so careful with medicines we take, even those given to us by of physicans. I am so glad that he gave God the glory and was so honest about his problems. God will bless him for this.

A Must Read

A real life story of tragedy, triumph, success, gutter, mountain top, valley, Michael takes you there as this was his journey. He shares how he found the way home and this can help others, regardless of the situation, the answer is the same!

Touching

What a great life story of healing and redemption! It is also a reminder that as Christians we should not condemn, but rather lift up our fallen fellow walkers and pray them to a place of restoration in love.

I love Michael's singing

The raw honesty of this book was intense. I love Michael's singing, and was very interested in the story of the man behind the voice.

Great Book

Michael English, I am so proud of you. This book is awesome and I really loved it. I hope everyone will buy it because it leaves a great impact on you

The prodigal comes home

This book shares the story of a man who went from the top of the mountain to the deepest pit but was desperate and humble enough to accept God's help. He survived and is now living a wonderful life and telling his story. The book is easy to read but touches the heart in a profound way. Even those who have no experience at all with drug addictions will be able to relate. My only wish is that I would have bought it sooner ... it is an amazing book.

I trusted in God for Michael.

I have been to his concerts where I had a sense of sadness about Michael. I would watch him sing, and pray for him. I am so glad that he has shared his troubles so that someone else might benefit from his story of redemption. So happy for Michael and his family.

Very good book

It's tough to tell the world your intimate life story. I applaud Michael for overcoming the trials and tribulations in his life and sharing his story. It reminds us that no one is perfect and the road to redemption (even if only for ourselves) is truly a road worth traveling. Thanks, Michael!

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book - really. I was a HUGE Michael English fan, and remembered thinking at the Young Messiah tour in 1991 that there was gonna be trouble with First Call. The book comes across as a happily ever after - when even he states briefly that this is not what he intends. But he did what most addicts do and jumped into another marriage after a very very short duration - and paints nothing but a rosy picture about it. The current marriage should have been played down. I wanted to know more about God's part in this story - and He is kind of an aside. The passion is for the career, it seems. It's a compelling story, undoubtably - but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Uneasiness. Too cut and dry - because undoubtably the devastation continues. Maybe with another writer's help it would not have come across like this.

Buy it!!

One of the best books I've read. Couldn't put it down.

Love Michael and this book makes him human

Love Michael and this book makes him human. Honest and so very interesting to read about his struggles and victories.

Excellent read!

I loved reading this book and couldn't put it down. It is very well written. I have always loved Michael's voice and knowing his whole story is so uplifting. I can so relate to the small town, legalistic upbringing -- he painted the picture perfectly and brought a smile to a bittersweet memory. So thankful for our loving Father who never, ever gives up on us!

Five Stars

Great book! Easy to read. I adore Michael English.

Overcoming pain with the joy of living

A well written book about a heart wrenching story of life, love and loss. My husband read this book in one evening.

The Prodigal is blessed!

I have all Michael English music. It is refreshing to hear a story with such honesty. I could not put the book down. I am seeing him in concert this Friday just a couple weeks after I read the book. Can't wait.

What a Blessing

I read this book in one day. The story was riveting, heart breaking, and so full of redemption, hope, and grace. I was encouraged, yet again, to read a story of just how far God is willing to go to get us back.

Absolutely Awsome what our God will do when we surrender all . LET GO AND LET GOD CRIED THROUGH WHOLE BOOK. TEARS OF HURT SADNESS AND JOY

Absolutely Awesome what our God will do when we surrender all.LET GO AND LET GOD CRIED THROUGH WHOLE BOOK. TEARS OF HURT SADNESS AND JOY

Battle For a Man's Soul ...

It is the story of a man who went through a spiritual battle in & out of music world ... & then had the guts to tell about it ...

Very tough life style

I believe a lot of the details that occurred in Michael's life could have been left out. The main message and the finale were good.

Michael English is my favorite gospel singer

Michael English is my favorite gospel singer, and this is a man who has made an amazing comeback! I am currently reading this book and I cannot put it down. Five stars all the way!

Powerful! To hell and back.

If you are a fan of Michael English you will find this book powerful and uplifting. He went from being on the top of his game and a well known Gospel singer to the depths of addiction. But he fought his way back through God's grace. This book holds nothing back, he is very open about his trials and comebacks.

Just normal folks!

This was an inspirational tale of someone who had it all, lost it and started his climb back. It was written in a way that a common person could identify with. One can't help but admire someone who has found the strength, through his faith to start his long climb back. No punches, just reality that you can identify with.

Enjoyable

It was an enjoyable read.

Thank you Michael for sharing

Thanks for truthfulness and not making himself a victim, but he accepts complete responsibility for his sin, and only then, shares about the Father's love redemption and forgiveness. Well worth reading.

Another life of ups and downs with the Lord reigning supreme

I had taken an interest in Michael's story because I had experienced panic attacks myself as well as problems in my walk with the Lord. It is good to see how longsuffering the Lord is with those who love him but are weak in their walk. It's good to know that the Lord continues pursuing us and perfecting us in knowledge of Him and will work all things together for good.

What A Surprise This Book Was

All I knew about was Michael English's infidelity and downfall in the Christian music world. I figured that was what the book would be about. I was not figuring on reading about all the other things that went on in his life. I was absolutely shocked. I couldn't believe how screwed up he became. What I did realize was that "but for the grace of God go I", for as terrible as I found everything he did, I had lived a similar life many years ago while still leading a mildly Christian life. So I can't necessarily judge him. BUT, unlike many of you here--I do not feel that he had much remorse except as he figured was needed to get himself accepted back into the Christian music world. A regular, unreligious, unsaved person on drugs goes no where, and alone. But with the help of one's church, or in his case the music world, he can pull himself back up. He was fortunate there were people that aided him and cared. Yes, he was very fortunate. And he came back and I wish him well. But, in reading this book I just felt as if he KNEW better than to get mixed up so deeply in drugs (time after time, after time no less), the shacking up with various women, the nightclubs and strip joints, the alcohol, divorce, etc., etc., and he just seemed to allow it to take over his life completely and it shocked me. But as he admitted he wasn't very grounded in his Christianity, he didn't read the Bible, he didn't pray and he never, ever seemed in the book to find any consolation through the Scriptures or prayer. He seemed to relish the hedonistic lifestyle. He seemed to enjoy discussing it and flaunting it. Furthermore, that he still performed and did his TV programs as a Christian while on drugs. He was just SO screwed up. Hopefully he can buckle down now and lead a more exemplary Christian life. I've read many books about people who led a horrible, terrible life and then found Christianity. This book was kind of the opposite. I've never read a book about a Christian who 'backslid' and did such awful things. Yes, it is a book about God's mercy and forgiveness, but like another reviewer said, it's just not a very convincing book that I imagine would affect anybody else's life to change, but we can only hope so. And no photos! Umphh. I don't like big, expensive hardbound books with no photos!

Very Inspiring

God has given Michael a very powerful testamony. This book is well written and easy to read. I read it in two days. This story shows that God is a God of forgivenss, grace, and second chances. It doesn't matter what you've been through or what you've done. God can still use you! :)

Michael English book

This book was very good, I finished it in a couple days. It shows what can happen to anyone and that there is hope for everyone.

Michael is heroic

I am an entertainer as well, and a lot of what Michael has been through, I have too. I have turned my life back to God, but now I know to take one day at a time. Reading his book was like reading my diary. To know the aspects of what trials he went through and to see where he is now is very inspiring. This book is a great read for all.

fantastic

I love this book. God bless Michael for getting his life together. He is a great inspiration to all people.

Good read

I read this before and it's a good story.

The Love of God is Unstoppable

Every song on this album is obviously deeply personal to Michael, and every song on this album will make any listener want to get back up and keep going. It is about Repentance, Redemption, GRACE, and Sanctuary in Christ. Once you listen to this album a few times, you realize God is not surprised by what we bring to him ..... HE isn't tired of our problems. The Love of God is Unstoppable. Thank you Michel English for recording these inspirational songs.

Inspirational

I've been listening to Michael a lot, and I'm in love with the gift that God gave to him. In a few videos that I've watched I saw him getting very emotional, so I decided to research, and I've found out that he has a book covering his life. I was very inspired reading it. Thanks Michael, and May God Bless you!

A good story of God's grace and reconciliation

Very honest! A good story of God's grace and reconciliation!

Excellent story of redemption

Excellent story of redemption. I have read it twice with many more to come. Truly a "can't put down." HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

Bye bye addiction

I followed Michael through most of his career. I found this book to be written in such a way that the average person can feel the struggles he dealt with. Very real and compelling story of his life and how he finally overcame drug addiction.

Great read.

Great story I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with addiction and with feelings of insecurity with how much God loves us.

Painfully honest story ...

a must read!

Very honest with regard to the struggles he's faced with God's help. I have a deepened respect for Michael... So much for one person to overcome!

God always receives glory

This book captured me from the beginning I relate through music and to hear the accounts of one artists struggle and how through God and God alone he prevailed. Praise God. I would recommend this book to everyone that enjoys the victories won through our savior.

A painfully honest story of human weakness and Gods forgiveness

I read this book in almost a night. It was an honest account of how Christian music "stars" can fall into the same temptations as secular "stars" do. It was well written and painfully honest. This is a sad yet wonderful account of God's love , patience and forgiveness.

Wonderful

This was a wonderful book of Gods love and Forgivness-He is a almighty God!!!I love Michael English i have listen to him for the last 20 years. He has the voice of an Angel,God gave him this gift to help people like me!!!!Thank You Jesus

The Prodigal Comes Home:My Story of Failure & God's Story of Redemption

I love this book. It is not "preachy". Very honest. I have always loved Michael English and his music, so am very happy that he has gotten his life and career back. If you know anyone who has struggled with addiction, they will enjoy this book.

Very Inspirational!!!

I liked how Michael shares his Heart. The Good, Bad and Ugly, also there is hope for the struggling Addict. That is so important when you feel hopeless!

A story of hope and inspiration.

God's grace is infinitely patient. Michael's story is a story of hope for all; especially those who are struggling with a challenge in life.

The Prodigal Comes Home: My Story of Failure and Gods Story of Michael English

Very good, wanted to know what an where Michael was an how he was doing.Went to hear him years ago. Has a beautiful voice

Michael English's Life

Great book. Amazing story true story. Had a hard time putting it down and to see him now is wonderful.

Inspiring

Great read for all who struggle in this life. Thanks to Michael for sharing and being willing to tell his story.

I'm so glad Michael decided to write a book about his trials

I'm so glad Michael decided to write a book about his trials. the story was nothing like I heard, through rumors. I never knew what a person went through, trying to get off drugs. Michael makes it very clear, the suffering, the fall backs after drug rehab, and even praying to God for help. God didn't answer his prayer at first, but when he knew Michael was sincere, then he answered. that's our God, always right on time. God is good all the time. all the time God is good. I have a much higher opinion of Michael English now, than I did before I read his book.

A testimony of God's grace and mercy.

This is a amazing book about God's mercy and grace. I was touched by Michael English's transparency. Michael's book proves that God is a forgiving God and there is nothing that we can do that God won't forgive us for if we sincerely ask for forgiveness and truly repent and turn away from our sins.

GREAT BOOK!

A friend of mine said he could relate to Michaels story, so I purchased and read it. What a story! Thanks to you Michael for letting the world know that God is all forgiving and loving. Sometimes we forget that he is just waiting on us to ask for help. If your looking for info on his affair, this is not the book for you. This is a book about a man's personal struggles with his faith, family, pills and love. Loved, Loved, Loved this book!

Don't bother

Looked forward to reading this book, but was really disappointed. It didn't talk much about the music,& way too much about drugs. Very depressing...

Good, But Lacks Important Details

First off, let me say that I am a massive fan of Michael's music. It was his singing that inspired me to sing. I have followed his career even in the ugly times and I was so happy when I saw this book. I devoured it and have read it several times. Really, it is a fascinating and ugly read. Michael is brutally honest about his sin and the depth of moral depravity that he fell into before his restoration. I loved reading about his early singing days with the Singing Americans and Gaithers and that was the easiest part to read. However, Michael spends very little time recalling his time with these groups and gives a brief overview of these events. I was hopeful that he would write about his relationship with the guys in these groups. A few experiences in live concert settings would've been nice, but Michael wrote this section in a way that makes it sound like he actually did not enjoy this time in his life. He writes about panic attacks and his marriage problems, but no highlights from his time in these groups. The section that describes his solo career is even more disappointing. Again he talks about panic attacks and marriage problems and I came away with the impression that he didn't enjoy this period of his life. He makes it sound like the solo career was never his idea and he was forced to do it. Then Michael describes his downfall from Christian music via an affair. This section is very detailed, and gives the reader a mental picture of a train wreck that you can see coming long before impact. Then we read a brief summary of his secular career and I do mean brief. His entire secular career is summed up in a few paragraphs. I wish he'd discussed what it was like being in the studio singing non-Christian songs for the first time in his life. Even more disappointing is his lack of attention toward the making of Heaven to Earth and the Christmas project. It would've been nice to read about what it was like for him to go through vocal changes and trying to record and fool Brown Bannister while he was high on drugs. How did that work out? By far the biggest bulk of the book is the part about Michael's addiction to pain meds and I appreciate his honesty. However, I will agree with other reviews and say that Michael left a lot of questions unanswered. How does he see God today? Does he still face temptation for meds? If so, how does he overcome it? He paints a pretty picture of his second marriage here, but few years ago they separated. It is none of my business what happened, but readers should know that even after repentance, hard times still come. Just because you change doesn't mean that problems won't follow you. David repented, but he paid a high price when two sons committed grave acts and died horrible deaths. Overall, this is a good read that you will consume in one sitting. But please realize that it is not complete by any stretch of the imagination. It's a sad book with a hastily written ending that attempts to smooth icing over a bitter cake. Even so, Michael's honesty is commendable. We should all take note of his reason for the initial downfall; a lack of depth in your relationship with God sets you up for disaster.

Great Story of God's Mercy and Love Not So Greatly Written

Anyone who was a fan of Christian music in the early '90s will remember vividly the story of Michael English. At least, the beginning of the story. Most of us had no idea what happened to him after the scandal that ruined his Christian musical career along with the woman (and the band) with whom he had an affair. But that story was really just the beginning of the story of Michael English. What happened next will fascinate and horrify you. Michael took a long road of self destruction that ended with him nearly in prison and/or dead. This book is almost as likely to depress you as it is to open your eyes. I say that only because Michael's story IS depressing and sad... However, it's also a great example of God's love for all of us and how His mercy is enough to lift us from the lowest depths of depravity and despair. No one, especially not Michael English, will ever stop wondering what his life could have been like had he not made the bad decisions he made, but all of us can be thankful that another one of God's lambs has been brought back into the flock. This book isn't especially well written nor does it go into some of the details some people would probably like to hear. But it is a good story and worth reading.

An honest behind-the-scenes story

Michael's "fall" from Christian music in 1994 was a big thing. I still remember walking into a Christian bookstore the day after and finding his CDs marked at a heavy discount and the store owner saying they'd be pulled by the end of the week (I bought a copy immediately). A lot of things have been said about Michael's failure at that point with the affair, but this book brings to light his and Marabeth's attempt to face up honestly for what they'd done. Truthfully, Marabeth could have kept her mouth shut and let her husband think the child was his and nothing more would have ever been known about it, but they didn't. It hurt, but they were honest. The story gets tragic from there with Michael relapsing time and again into drug addiction. To be honest, I was a little unhappy to learn his two shows on a Christian television network were done while he was high as a kite (did no one in production notice anything?) and his records released then seem a little false as well, but at least he was trying to get on the right track. Now it appears his life has finally settled back into the plan God has for him with a new wife and another baby. I'm glad to see him back. I remember reading an article a couple of years after the incident and it showed pictures of him. I thought, "Man, he looks like he's put on a lot of weight!", and this book explains what was going on then. His personal struggles took their toll on his life. Michael is brutally honest in this book and holds nothing back. Every failure and shortcoming are brought to light, with no excuses. He was a man who made mistakes, and he isn't afraid to admit it. During the weeks after Michael's admitted affair, another famous Christian artist (this one a woman) also admitted to having an affair on her husband, got a divorce, and stepped out of her ministry for years. The press never really touched this one, even though she'd won awards as well. It just shows how Michael was singled out by the press and raked over the coals, which didn't help his situation. I read this in one day, and it held my attention throughout. It's a great read and an honest look at the struggles the celebrities we dub "super Christians" go through behind the scenes.

The Prodigal Comes Home

I was very surprised at how open and honest Michael English was about his story of adultery, sexual sin, drug abuse and addiction. I began the book already aware of the affair but had no idea about the depths of his fall into sin. There was definitely a lot of detail about his sins but I felt that there were a few holes in his story. I would liked to have heard a little more about the spiritual struggle, guilt and shame that brought him back to God. It was there but just not focused on as much as the story of his sins. Also, his family relationships were talked about at the beginning of the book but there was barely a mention of them after Michael's marriage until the end of the book. I would have also liked some pictures from his life which always helps the reader make a connection to the person. Overall it was a good read and I am so happy to see that he is once again off drugs and singing Gospel music.

Inspiring bio of a fallen Christian pop star

As a humbled Christian strugging through the unpleasant consequences of my own missteps I found this account of Michael English's rise and fall as a Christian vocal star to be both heartbreaking and encouraging. I never followed his career or listened to his music but he offers a highly engaging account of a lifelong passion for southern gospel singing and struggles with anxiety, substance abuse, and sexual immorality. I get the impression that his problems may not all be over (is anyone's?) but he has emerged from these past trials humbler, spiritually wiser and closer to God which is exactly why God let's us stumble and suffer the consequences. As English put it, "When the lowest thing that could possibly happen happens, don't give up, because you might be missing a blessing just down the road."

OK. Left me wanting.

I was compelled to read this book as someone who has shared my own falls from grace. I have to say that the writing in this book left something to be desired. If you are looking for a spiritual view into the mind of Michael English and why he made choices that he did, I don't think you'll find it here. It is definitely a "factual" look into what happened, but even at the end of the book, there was only a skimmed over narrative of what was spiritually happening in the mind and life of this man. I still have no clear view of his relationship with Jesus and how he is relating to Him today. It felt stoic. It was interesting to hear about his life, but it didn't compel me in any way to turn to Jesus. Maybe that wasn't his intention though. Maybe he just wanted to set the record straight, and if that is the case, it would be okay. I think there was a deep potential to truly relate and identify with people in similiar circumstances as himself. Unfortunately, I saw only the "actions" of this man, instead of what He feels Jesus Himself was using to draw and push him closer to his prodigal return. I just didn't see much of Jesus in this book, and the population that will relate to this story the most (ME INCLUDED) need to see that spiritual journey, not just what it was like being in rehab. I wanted to hear more about Jesus, and less about his drama. If you need encouragement or stories of redemption and true grace, I recommend a book like "

Brutally honest

When I first got saved (for the 200th time, but this time it took), Michael was my absolute favorite singer. I tried to get my hands on everything I could that he had done. I saw him in concert with First Call, and he sang with such an anointing! When I heard the news, I was devastated. Not for myself, but for him...it showed me once again how someone that seemingly had it all could lose it so quickly. How little did I know until I read this book how much it cost him. I read this book in one sitting, and was just stunned and amazed as I read it, how the emotion poured from each page. What an amazing story of love and forgiveness. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's an amazing ride, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, and now back on the upswing. Michael had a great singing ministry before, it should be even better now, as I'm sure many people can relate to many of his experiences. God bless him for having the courage to tell his story with such honesty!

WOW!!

Amazing life story....could have all ended with a terrible headline. As a young Christian I wrote Michael off as another fallen Christian hypocrite and dismissed him from my mind· This is what we do before we know. Sin and horrible choices came to my own life. I heard about this book a while back and haven't gotten around to it til now. Michael was really lucky to get out alive....so thankful for God's goodness and grace and mercy in our lives. Definitely a story that needed telling. Buy it, borrow it from your local library, just read it.

Sad true story of a man many thought was living a dream.

My heart went out to Michael as I read this book. At every point in his life when he should have felt on top of everything he was overcome by other problems bringing him down to rock bottom. Just to imagine the wealth and fame that he once had dwindled to nothing as he was reduced to looking for drugs to get through the day while the dogs in his home were not even let out! He did become a Prodigal and while on a drug high, God spoke to him to bring him to his senses. God was not finished with Michael, and gave him not just a second chance, but a sixth, seventh, even a thousandth chance perhaps. Those struggling with addictions or adultery should read this book. I have always loved his singing and knew of some of his publicized problems but never realized what he really went through.

Hard To Put Down, So Much Candor,Detail, Even Hard To Read At Times, Had No Idea The Road He’d Travelled/Survived

Would Recommend to Any Christian, Prodigal, Anyone Struggling To Stop An Addiction, Shows The Slippery And Very Very Dangerous Slope That Sin Takes Us To, Thank God Michael Survived To Tell His Story!

An intriguing story

Michael English's autobiography follows his rise in contemporary Christian music, then his spectacular downfall after an affair with a married Christian musician. It's a story of redemption and healing, and is quite a riveting read. However, at 220 pages, the story winds up feeling a bit brief. Certain periods in Michael's life seemed to be glossed over, and even his recording career gets short shrift. If you're looking as to why he chose certain songs or for any insight on the making of his albums, you won't get much information here. Still, it's a compelling story, and he confronts his demons (drug addiction, the affair) with a admirable honesty.

Great book

I think Michael English is a very talented writer and person. I loved seeing his sense of humor come out through the book. It is so evident ("can I get an Amen here?") I think Michael English has more guts than anyone I know! He talked extensively about his past childhood and was very honest about the life of a Christian artist. At one point, he said that many leaders in the church don't question the spirituality (and even if they are Christians) if an artist is on stage singing about the Lord. The fact that he brings this up is so unbelievable in that it is way too often that we idolize the one on stage while we forget they are human. This book definitely needed to be written! I only wish that I had information like this 20 yrs ago when I idolized Christian artists more and thought they were oh, so perfect. It doesn't make me think less of them but it brings to reality that whether it is an artist, a preacher, or missionary, we are all human. What happened to Michael could have happened to anyone of us. While he admits that he may not have been very close to God when all this happened, he did pray for help and I have to think he may be not giving himself enough credit. Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy and GOD allowed Michael to go through this because HE knew the ending. God knew that Michael would allow his story to be written and to help others. What was really awesome was that he spent considerable time with his upbringing. It really gave light to so much on how he thought and his decisions. There was a real shocker in there for a mom like me who has children. The only thing I had an issue with and really, it is just a small part and really wish I could have scored this book a 4.7 was the divorce thing. Michael cannot praise his former wife enough and he admits his wrongdoing over and over and is obviously very sorry. However, it didn't work out too bad for him. He winds up marrying a woman who is said to be beautiful and 17 yrs younger than him. What middle aged man wouldn't want that? I know he didn't want that message to come across but I would have liked to see how hard the divorce was. If what happened to him happened to a regular person, I cannot say that it would have worked out so good. God definitely showed Michael English lots of favor and grace in the long run and for that I am grateful. It does give hope. Michael is a good man and I would recommend his book and go to his concerts. I give him credit in being gutsy and bring to light how we idolize the Christian artists. Michael should be commended for this book!

Best in the world

This is the most awesome truthful book that you can read. Michael doesn't mind telling his pain, heartaches, divorce and failure because he knows that we serve a mighty GOD and he would one day be back in the spot light again. This is one man that I would truly love to meet because he has been through problems that alot of us have been through ourselves. It's ashame that just because he's in the spot light his problems have to be exposed. But this is OK with me because I know that he is an awesome person. Keep doing what you're doiong Michael and I wish the the very best out of life and I know that GOD will continue to bless you in many ways. I am grateful for your true christian friends that stood beside you during your ordeal. You will always be the best in my eyes....

The Prodigal Comes Home

I could not put the book down and considering I can't remember the last time I actually read a book cover to cover that is saying alot. This is a story about an individual that could have been any one of us. He had some thing happen to him in his childhood and when he was exposed to a prescription pain killer he was able to escape for a period of time only to find out that it would soon control his life. If you have never been touched by addiction in your family you can not relate but if you read his story you will fully understand what happens to someone who's life is controlled by a drug. Thank God that he did find help and now is able to give hope to others that there is life after drugs. It took courage to reveal what happened and fully expose himself to help others. Thanks Michael for sharing your story. You made a difference in my life.

Amazing Story of an Amazing Man

Michael English is not a man that claims to be perfect, strong, or without a past. He is, however, a man that will tell you that the only thing that saved him is Jesus Christ. He's brutally honest in telling how he fell and equally honest in illustrating how he got back up again. He takes the blame when it's deserved (I think he was incredibly respectful of Lisa. He really realizes that she was a victim) and he gives credit where it's due (Topper Council, Bill Gaither, Michael W. Smith). It's an excellent read from a very strong man with an ever-growing faith. I've read it twice and get something new out of it each time. Everyone...and I mean everyone...can relate to Michael's story. xoxo

Awesome!

Michael English's story truly is encouraging. Not only to those who may be going through similar situations, but to family members helping others going through it. This book truly touched my heart. God is so merciful on us; He's always with us and guides our steps. Can't wait for Michael to come to Hawaii!

Inspiring book!

Very inspiring book! I appreciate Michael English's transparency and the hope he gives for restoration from addictions! I have bought extra copes to share with others!

Michael English Story So Far

This was an easy read, partly because of the very short chapters, and too because the author isn't trying to impress us with verbosity. He IS concerned with a truthful look at his upbringing in the rural south, the dysfunction of his family and community, his rise to stardom, and his descent into drug addiction. He gives an EXCELLENT description of addiction and its consequences. Ultimately, this is a story of repentance, redemption, healing and love. Being Christian, he avoids profanity and sexual explicitness, thus making it a book available to teen audiences as well. Enjoyable, honest, and hard to put down.

A must read

Whether you are a fan of Michael English's music or a skeptic, there is no denying the power of God's grace in his story. Michael is candidly honest about his struggles and his failures. His story is at times heart-warming and funny; Then,heart-wrenching and sad. In the end, though, it is an inspirational story of restoration and "second chances". This is a must read.

Good Writing in Cramped Quarters

Once again Lynn Vincent ("Same Kinda Different as Me") makes me lose sleep on work nights with her fast paced, seamless story telling -- this time about a guy who isn't all that convincingly redeemed. Behind the scenes in the Christian music world, with fascinating "you are there" detail. Fun cliff-hanging chapter ends that made me stay up too late. I don't think he intended this (maybe Lynn did), but it made me feel better about myself knowing someone so talented, could mess up so bad. Grace is for everyone.

Great story of failure and forgiveness

I don't usually read many books, but I couldn't help but finish this one. Michael English was a very successful Christian singer, but Satan used that against him and caused him to fall into a web of lust, adultery, drug abuse and other sins. Michael's book is an honest account of all of those things and how God is always there waiting for us to fall back into His loving arms of grace and forgiveness, which Michael did. As a reward, God gave Michael a fresh start in his career, and his family life is better than ever. Michael admits that it's not an easy battle when you're climbing uphill, but God is still holding Michael's hand and this time Michael has no intentions of letting go. I applaud him for having the courage to share his story with the world.

There is always hope!

Michael English shares a story of hope and redemption. Many of us can relate to the struggle he has with his own sin, self destructive behavior, and his faith. If you have ever fallen off the path, this is an encouraging story to read.

So glad there is grace, and what happened to the other person?

I am so grateful to hear the story of Michael English told... and best of all by him. I remember the "scandal"... I remember thinking "wow, what about grace?" And I always remember thinking what about the other person involved (Marabeth Jordan)? But no one told her story. She is still (evidently) hidden away. I hope it is by her choice and that she is as well and as loved as Michael! Love covers all!

Michael English

This is a great book. Michael deserves a lot of credit for his openness and humility. He has definitely gone from the top to the very bottom. He does not try to blame anyone for his failures but himself. He has faced the worst of times and I am so glad for a merciful, forgiving God who Michael serves. I am glad that Michael is singing again-what a voice!

God's amazing grace

I am almost finished with this book, & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Michael's story is a perfect example of "there but for the grace of God go I." We as Christians are still sinners, & this story shows that none of us are immune to Satan's attempt to derail our lives, but God's forgiveness and redemption are real, folks! Amen!

Excellent Read

Great book! I have been a Michael English fan for a long, long time as he grew up about 25 miles from here. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it was too short...not in depth enough. It touched on different things but never let the reader know what happened with those things. Other than that, it was great!

Southern Charm

What a good story! Michael English's movie-script rise, fall, and redemption points to God's infinite forgiveness and unconditional love. His lively storytelling (with talented writer Lynn Vincent) entertains, educates and inspires. I especially loved Vincent's memorable descriptions of English's Southern roots. Who can forget his grandparents, Ma English and Daddy Dewey?

Inspirational

Michael has given us all proof that there is hope in this world! This story is such a candid and refreshing story of his life. He is living proof that redemption is avaiable for us all. It shows just how accessible our God truely is!!!!!!!

Have kleenex on hand

My cousin had recommended the book. I have been a big fan of Michael's since the Gaither Vocal Band days. I was at concerts he described in the book. A real life version of the prodigal son is the most apt description. If it doesn't touch your heart, you need help.

Wonderful biography

This book is a very open, honest account of Michael English's life. I admire him more than ever after reading it and love how God's love is so redemptive.

can't put down

This book has provided me with hope. It shows me that this superstar is no different from you or I - either in our vulnerabilities, or our need for a redeeming God to infect our lives .. on a DAILY basis. Praise God for Michael English & for this book.

The Prodigal Comes Home

Amzing Book. Very well written. A story of grace and mercy that you will not soon forget.

The prodigal comes home by Michael English

Great testimony, The story of forgiveness, redemption and restoration in a man, made real by a faithful God. Great read !!

No Matter How Great Your Sins You Can Make money out of them in Nashville.

I feel sorry for musicians without God. They can't repackage all of their life's greatest misses and mishaps and sell them back to the gospel market in the form of a confessional. Failed country musicians have to become alcoholics (or cadavers). Failed gospel singers can always come back with colourful stories of what miserable sinners they once were and set it to the tune of ringing cash registers.

Wonderful book!!

Great book!! I have read it 2 times, thinking about reading it again!!

Moving account

Michael English has had a long and successful musical career in Gospel music, but his personal life has often been a disaster. Coming from a family that some Americans would call 'trailer trash', He grew up with some deep wounds, Maybe that is the explanation for the mess he made of his adult life, despite fame and wealth because of his good looks, immense musicality and Christian faith. Perhaps marriage and fame came before he had the chance to grown up. The story of his life makes pretty sad reading. His restoration, with the help of a new wife and the loyalty of Bill Gaither, is moving. Of course, his struggles continued beyond the ending of the book and he still seems to be a complicated individual. He's 58 as I write, and no longer in the limelight. I hope that he finally makes sense of his life and his faith and finds real peace of mind.

Simply gripping

This book is a life changer. Anyone can learn from it as it paints a picture of Gods love, forgiveness, grace, mercy and second chance opportunity. I am so glad Michael English wrote this book. There will be many who will benefit from your openness regarding falling and getting back up again. You are blessed to be a blessing. May God favour you Michael.

God of Second Chances....I say AMEN to that!!!

I say...this is an amazing book to read, and it's a true story! It took me less than 7 hours to read the whole book, couldn't put it down. I'm a great believer in God who died for our sins and His Word tells us that He will not lose His own. The story of Michael English is truly inspiring and eye-opening. I got to reading his book after being totally struck by the anointed singing of his signature song 'I bowed on my knees and cried holy'. His book is a testimony of the Love of God and I hope that all those who read this book, no matter what state they are in, will find the strength to seek God and let God take over their life and lead them to where He wants them to be. Like Michael's story, it may not be a Damascus road miracle, but it will mould character and you will come out refined as gold is refined. Stay blessed Michael, and thank you for sharing your testimony.

Lovey Gift

Bought as a gift, therefore can't review it yet. Sure my husband will enjoy it at Christmas.
