Just received the paperback. Did not realize it would be such a bad decision to get the paperback. The book is 6 3/4" x 4 1/8" and nearly 1 3/4" thick. The inside margin is only 1/8" which means you have to break the binding to read every page. There's no way this book is going to hold up. Getting the hardcover which is 6 3/4" x 9 1/2". Should eliminate the problem.
Kicking it Old and New School with Our Scrabble Dictionary
I grew up playing Scrabble and Upwords with my great aunts, and this was the Holy Grail - always out on the table during games and consulted often when I would try and get a word by them. If the word you played wasn't in the Scrabble dictionary, by heavens, it didn't count and no amount of arguing would help you. As I pass my love of playing board games onto my kids, I've noticed that I, too, insist upon deference to the Scrabble dictionary. My kids want to play words that I would argue are slang or abbreviations (E.g., "LOL, BTW, hot mess). This updated Scrabble dictionary takes the large generation gap into account and is updated to includes many of today's words, most of which I don't know (seriously, what is listicle??). I purchased the hard cover version based on the other reviews here, and thankfully, we did not have the printing errors that others mentioned. Another unintended benefit of using the Scrabble dictionary is having my kids look up the word in dispute - to this generation of 8 year olds - an actual dictionary is as arcane as a phone book, both of which caused great excitement when they showed up at the house. I look forward to this updated Holy Grail to be the final arbiter of our family Banagram and Scrabble disputes - in fact, I have already consulted it and told my daughters that "LOL" isn't a recognized "word" in the Scrabble dictionary, and therefore, doesn't count, ending such squabbles with a parental equivalent of a mic drop (also not a recognized word).
GOT THE HARDCOVER AFTER READING REVIEWS
Got the hardcover after reading reviews - It is a well made book but not too heavy. It would be impossible to learn it all unless you have a lot better memory than I have. I have decided on a plan to get the most out of it. I have ordered highlighters in all the different colors in order to organize the words and hopefully learn a few in the process. My current plan is to highlight all the two letter words in one color, all the three letter words in a different color, the high scoring words that are likely to get used in a different color. Hopefully, it will be like making a cheat sheet so I learn something in the process. Also in the process, I hope to notice useful new words that I’m not familiar with but highlighting them would mean highlighting the whole book. I will have to come up with a method of deciding if a new word is worth remembering to maybe just be used for Scrabble.
Out of numerical page order m through p
Excited to recieve my book as I play scrabble with an 90 year old resident. However after looking through book i noticed that the pages starting with m through p are not put together in numarical order. It starts the ms then goes to p then the rest of ms then rest of ps...kind of bummed
It's finally here!
My mom (who is 86) and I are avid Scrabble players. When I got my book, the first word I looked up was "zen" and it was in there! ...so was "vape." I also like the sections in the back that list the words with q not followed by u, and 2- to 7- letter words with no AEIOU vowels; however, the latter would have been more helpful (and succinct) with no AEIOUY letters. I hope someone prints a list of just the new words (about 6,500) so we can familiarize ourselves with those, regardless of how "ridic" they are. I remember when we discovered XI and QI - it did a world of good to our score.
Missing words
On several occasions, we'll turn to this dictionary to verify the spelling of a word before playing it, or to see if we can add letters to the beginning or end of the word, only to find the word isn't listed. We will both agree it's a word. (We're both college-educated people who were earning in the low six figures before we retired, so it isn't as if we're illiterate. In fact, my husband taught school decades ago.) We will then go to the Internet and verify that the word is in fact a word; which we knew to be the case. Why it isn't in this dictionary is a mystery. IF that had happened once, OK, but it's happened at least three, if not four times, with this latest edition. It happened with the old dictionary, as well. And I'm not talking about "new" words that relate to technology or pop culture; I'm talking about long-established words. Fortunately, our House Rules for Scrabble allow for the use of words when both players agree it's a word and we find the word on the Internet, which verifies the spelling. But what's the point of having a dictionary that doesn't include all words?
The Outside Cover is Upside down and reversed from the contents
We received the jacketed hardcover just a few minutes ago and upon examining the book we noted that the contents was upside down and reversed from the outside cover. We have not seen that before. As far as we know that is the only issue. Too bad that we spent $25.95 for it. For now we just reversed the jacket just a shame that the printers got this thing messed up. Anyone else had that issue.?
Search function appears to be useless
Presumably the primary purpose of this dictionary is to determine the validity of specific words. In the previous edition, you simply entered the word in the search bar and it returned either the word entry or a "no result" response. The new search function shows every instance of the letter combination without regard to whether it is a word or not. For example, the entry "ce" (not a word) results in more than 1,000 hits, with entries such as "reproduced" "preface" and "abduce." This is essentially useless if your purpose is to check on the validity of a word.
Essential Handbook for Cheater Words
'Cheater Words' are what my family calls all the two to three letter words that you never, ever encounter in real life, but appear in the Scrabble book. To be fair, they were probably all published in print at one point or another without the benefit of proofreading and spell-check (either that or they're Welsh). That said, the game is nearly impossible to play without them. To make things easier, the book breaks out all the 'cheater words' on pages 745-746, so you too can dominate the board with such ridiculous words as CWM, PYX, and XYST. I bought the hardcover edition of the book, and it seems well made. The book includes some newer words like facepalm and emoji, and variant Canadian and British spellings. All-in-all, a must have for playing a very fun game.
A Scrabble must have!
The 6th Edition of “The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary was a great buy & contributes to playing Scrabble a lot more fun & competitive! The Copyright is 2018 & it’s 736 pages long. It’s a heavy soft bound book but durable. Pages don’t wrinkle or rip easy. It’s made with quality. The print is impeccable as you can see from my pictures. One of my favorite features is in the back of the book there’s a “selection of useful words for players.” This includes •”Q words not followed by U” •”2- to 7-letter words with no AEIOU vowels” & •”2- to 6-letter words containing J, Q, X, or Z. This feature is fun addition to the book. A great value for what I paid & will last a long time. Definitely recommend!

Missing the word “during”
Missing the word “during”
Good for games... sometimes
Good for word games, which is the whole point, but not a functional every-day dictionary. I really wanted a dictionary that would also show the meanings of words (this one does!) so when my kids ask what a word means while we are playing a word game, they can look it up on their own. Sadly, when conversing, the word "obstinate" was used and my son asked what it meant. We said to look it up, but it wasn't in this dictionary. It's a playable word in SCRABBLE, and this IS the official SCRABBLE dictionary, so we can't figure out why it wouldn't be in there. (Yes, I realize it's longer than a seven letter word, but if the word "ate" was on the board, it's completely plausible that someone could play "obstinate" off of it.) After that I wasn't as keen on the dictionary because it failed at the only job it had.
Does not concur with the online Scrabble word check
We have found only one word that was not found in the Dictionary that was found in the Scrabble Dictionary online. Since that one word was not found, I have trouble trusting it at all. I knew the word not found was a word before ever checking the online Scrabble Dictionary, so the hard copy Sixth Edition is not up to snuff in our humble opinion. We rarely use it, but my husband does still refer to it now and again to confirm my findings on the online Scrabble Dictionary, which is free. I am sorry I cannot remember the word. We've played quite a few games since then and I am just getting around to reviewing this book. We did not return it and use it as a double checker. For the money, it isn't a bad purchase if you have another means to check and are a serious competitor of the Scrabble game.
More than 100,000 Words
This new (sixth) edition of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary is a welcome addition! I used both the fourth and fifth editions of this book and practically wore them both out. This book is lots of fun to read through to find new words and I find it essential to have handy when playing scrabble. Of special usefulness is finding out how adjectives, nouns, and verbs can be modified as additional words. Will definitely enjoy using this book and learning new words.
Miserable, frustrating
Awful. Incomplete. Almost seems like it was cobbled together by one of the Monty Python crew for a comedy skit. We've abandoned this and gone with searching Google for scrabble-valid words. I seem to remember our old "official" Scrabble dictionary from the late '80's being much more complete.
It was not handed directly to me but it was received in excellent condition.
If you are a Scrabble player, this is an excellent dictionary. Replacing my 20 year old one. This has new 2 letter words you would never think of. It also is updated with current words that were not in the dictionary many years ago. Good price and know I will enjoy it for many years to come. My title is because I am aggrivated that the Amazon delivery person said they "handed" to me. Have never had a problem with a delivery not being delivered, but I resent they use this option for their protection when it is simply not true. Lets see if I am blocked from rating products.... again.......
Don't expect to be able to use the Kindle edition
Amazon, in its infinite wisdom, does not let you actually use this dictionary on your Kindle as an actually, y'know, **book**. Instead, it's made into a dictionary, which means it's impossible to browse for a word. You can set it as the default dictionary, but then if you're searching for two or three letter words, you get every word that contains those letters. It's not just useless, it's painfully useless.
Doesn't hold up with high use
We have played almost 100 games since receiving the paperback about April 1 this year. Admittedly, we use it constantly for correct spellings before playing a word, but also to browse for words that might fit the letters we have. The binding separated between j and k over a month ago, and we used glue stick and tape to keep it together, but now it has fallen apart that we ordered the hard cover version, which is a big improvement in size of the fonts used in the book. We aren't unhappy we got it as the replacement for the soft cover.
Useful extras in the back
Great condition! This is a great scrabble book. Ours was falling apart so we ordered this to replace it but we may end up keeping both. This book includes a section in the back for Q words not followed by U, 2-7 letter words with no AEIOU vowels and 2-6 letter words with J,Q,X or Z. It even has definitions. Our old book has a section in the back for extra long words though so we'll probably keep it too.
Love the larger print in the trade paperback size
My wife and I are scrabble junkies and have been writing new words in the margins of our old scrabble dictionary for years. I finally bought this newer version in the slightly larger size (Trade) and love the larger print. Also, the paper a much brighter white than the older one. Love the updated words and word lists. The only downside of the larger book (and it isn't much of one) is that it doesn't fit in the scrabble box with everything else did where the small one did. No great loss.
The reference Scrabble players need!
No longer will we have to dig through a big dictionary only to find a word we used isn't in it. This dictionary has all those obscure words Scrabble players remember from somewhere, but can't prove that they exist. It also has very helpful lists of 2-letter words and words containing z,x,j, and q. I plan to memorize both lists.
Disappointed
If I wanted a brand new book to arrive with dog eared corners, I would have bought used. This "new" paperback arrived knocking around loose in a box with no packing. NOW, I'm all about reducing the size of shipping material, but NO protection at all is kinda silly. So this " new" book arrived already damaged. The materials are rather lightweight/flimsy. Otherwise the book works well. Just wish I had bought the hardback. The paperback this one replaced was 30 years old. This one won't last anywhere near that long!
If you play Scrabble, this is a must!!
This book can make playing Scrabble more fun & competitive. Challenges can be quicker for the seasoned players. It can be a great learning tool for young families. It can help young players find words & word possibilities. It can teach meaning and usage over and beyond the spelling. Learning to keep score is fun when learning helps make for higher scores. Make bigger words. Learn the proper plural forms of words. All this helps young learners (and old ones too!) use the board to the fullest. Have fun winning and learning. A great book for Crossword puzzle enthusiast.
Great to have a definitive reference
We definitely like that we have a reference that absolutely tells us whether or not we have a valid word on the board. One person who plays regularly has a medical background and used to get away with using terms that none of the rest of us had ever heard of; another often dips into foreign words saying, "It's a common English term anymore"; and yet another uses the internet to find obscure references for words that are questionable at best. This volume ends all that nonsense and allows us to play the game.
not a quick way to check a word
When we play scrabble, we want a quick way to know that the word was acceptable. I wanted to be able to jump on, put a word in and get a quick yes or no. The way it is in the App. takes too much time. So we don't use it.
Just One FRUSTRATING Problem!
I love always having the latest edition of the Scrabble Dictionary. This one has over 300 new words. However, and this is a big deal to me, the book does not tell you which ones they are! With over 100,000 entries I can't imagine how one can figure out what ALL the new additions are. For obvious reasons they are not all printed on-line on the official Scrabble websites or by articles announcing this edition's arrival - just a few (the same ones) here and there. Every time we purchase the latest dictionary there should be someway of getting this list.
Hard bound and larger print
The latest official version that settles many a dispute in Scrabble and Up Words. Our previous copy was a paperback and was literally falling apart, this one is hard bound and the larger type makes it more convenient - recommended for Scrabble buffs
Reduces Scrabble-Squabbles!
Most liked features after daily household use for one week: its small size easily fits on our game table; its light weight makes it easy to lift and hold; its bold font makes it easy to SEE in varying room light; its content is surprisingly comprehensive compared to the massive Merriam Websters Unabridged Dictionary---its predecessor at our home. However, about 1 in 10 times, the larger dictionary yields a more fitting result than the subject of this review (hence my 4-star rating vs 5-star).
Hardover edition missing pages 437 - 468 - purchased Dec. 2019
So, our first game my dad needs to look up a word that begins with O-U... Lo and behold, the O's stopped at "Osmics" on page 436. The next work on the adjacent page is "Phase" on page 469. While I'm glad we discovered this issue during our first game with the new dictionary, I'm disappointed as it was a Christmas gift. Returning and getting my money back. I'll go to a brick and mortar store for this book so I can make sure all the pages are there. We've been using the 2005 edition for years and thought it time to upgrade to new edition with "hundreds of new words!" as advertised. *sigh* Bad quality control, Quad Graphics in KY. Do better.
Kindle Edition may not show up in your library
I downloaded this book from my contents and devices. I restarted my kindle. This book will not appear in my library on my home page. I can find the book and read by searching for it. After I close the book it does not appear at the top of the list on my home page. If I go to Settings, > Languages and Dictionaries > Dictionaries, all I see is "The New Oxford American Dictionary". What is wrong here??
ok for price
Book I received was already damaged and the book binding is not going to hold up. But if you don't play scrabble that often it could be a good book.
Very heavy
This is a very well made book, beautiful cover, thick durable hard cover, heavy paper that will last a life time, and 10 pt type easy to read. My wife hates it because it is too heavy for her to handle. This book is made better than any other book that I own, including my encyclopedias. I have to admit it is heavy but is easy to read. However, who needs a Scrabble book that will last a life time?
The Scrabble Dictionary Keeps the Game Honest
We love the Scrabble Dictionary. Every time we play we have to refer to the Scrabble Dictionary to insure fair play. Last night we looked up three words. By the way “xa” is not a valid Scrabble word. We could look up the words on line but it’s fun to go old school when words are challenged during a match. It adds to the drama of competition.
...who makes up these words????!!!!....
I have now come across more words that I have no idea where they came from!!! Who wrote this dictionary!!!??? But it is great for playing Scrabble; a must when you have all consonants or all vowels!!!!
Has all the newest words
Based on reviews for the paperback version, I opted to replace my older dictionary with the hardcover version. I really wish, with so many new words added-1500?, that they were highlighted somehow in the dictionary. Or, better yet, that the new words could have been published in a separate book so we know what they are.
DEFECTIVE Dictionary - Missing Pages 437-468 (6th Edition)
This dictionary has some great features however this 6th Edition printing is DEFECTIVE and all the pages from 437 to 468 are missing (words starting with the Letter "O" through Letter "P"). Whoever put this edition together botched it! Not sure if all the 6th edition dictionaries are defective or just the one I received. Make sure you check for these pages!!
Good but ...
This book is a must for lovers of Scrabble. However, the Kindle edition is not easy enough to use during a game. It takes too long. As such, I purchased the print edition and that made it much better.
This one has definitions!
Much better than volume 4. Includes decent definitions of the words, plus a lot more contemporary words.
Great for games
My sister and I play Banagram every week and refer to the dictionary often. Needed to replace our old one because it was really old. This one is great because it has bigger print and is well organized.
This book help me beat my girlfriend at Scabble for the first time.
Aren't sure if something is a weird when playing scrabble? Look it up in this dictionary! My girlfriend and I got this book to make Scrabble more competitive...for her. She never loses at Scrabble, well never until now. Something she will never let me live down of course. The book is easy to use and helps a lot when playing the game. I highly recommend it.
Put up your phones and level the playing field
Every time we played Scrabble, everyone had his/her phone out looking up "is this a word" on various websites. Not doing that anymore! We now have a Scrabble dictionary to pass around. If it's in here, you're good. I hated the phones in the game, and this was an inexpensive answer that squares us all up. Feeling so traditional!
Wasn't helpful in its design.
This sixth edition is an update, containing new words acceptable in playing Scrabble. However, it does not tell you what those words are. There should be a section at the front of the book, separate from the dictionary format of all the words, that lists all the new acceptable words.
Latest update, would have liked a list of the new words
I had the 5th edition of this, and bought the new edition to see the new words. While there are several interesting appendices, there is not a list of all the words added for this edition. I looked back and there was no such list in the 5th edition, either.
Bad, bad word selection for an official book!
Was excited about this so I ordered two, one for me and one for friend I play with. What we both discovered is that there are more strange words than helpful words! The only helpful part is the Q, X, Z sections, but it feels like cheating because most of the words we have never heard of and could never use in conversation. Money would be better spent on a regular dictionary! Can't recommend!
Don't be left In "The Lurch" !!
This Scrabble Dictionary is a must for those who enjoy the game and want to make sure they can use all those letters they have drawn. It can get you out a possible no play situation even it it means using a 2 - 3 letter word. It should be your go to reference when someone challenges your command of the language.
Fake words
I think there is something defective with this book. Everytime my wife makes up a stupid word in a Scrabble game, this book shows it as an actual word. When I try to play various 2 letter words and words that definitely phonetically sound like they could be real words, this book shows that they are NOT real words.
PRINT TOOOOOO SMALL
I should have looked somewhere to see if it showed the font style and size. Suspect it did not. Not me nor my family nor friends find it easy to use... a real pain, in fact. I will return or give away and search for type size that is easy to use whilst playing. This size is NOT it.
Seems quite arbitrary
Apparently the words allowed have changed a bit over the years. It used to be simply, no proper nouns, no foreign words, etc. Now apparently even phonetic representations of bodily noises are accepted. Why is this foreign word okay and not this other one that we also see used in an English context? I dunno. My wife enjoys using it.
New ScabbleDictionary -- 6th Edition
I routinely update our Scrabble dictionary when a new one comes out. Very rarely a web search, or unabridged dictionary, will find a challenged word that can't be found in this book, and it is "family friendly".
Its helpful to have this to avoid disputes !
My wife and I play boggle and scrabble often, and we definitely needed this updated version. We especially like the sections in the back listing words without vowels etc. Overall, this book is a must if you need to verify your words among friends and your trusting spouse, heh, heh.
Scrabble fiend friend loves the larger type
Purchased as birthday gift for friend who plays scrabble daily, against herself. She was thrilled to have the latest version of the dictionary, and even more excited about the larger format and type. Get the Trade Paperback for anyone over the age of 40.
Do not buy paper back
Make sure to get the hardcover edition. Paperback edition is to small to reasonably use.
Perfect for Scrabble players
This is exactly what I needed when I started playing Scrabble again, after so many years away from it. Now that I am retired and have time to play, I found this book very helpful in determining which words would be acceptable in a Scrabble game. It is easy to use, and the font, and print are easy on my eyes. I highly recommend this book.
Poor quality printing
Some pages didn't have enough ink to be able to read, some were stuck together, some print went off the page. However we endured and figured that it was the only option out there. But now 4 months later the books are falling apart at the spine, dropping pages. I really wish there was a durable book to use for scrabble addicts.
Great Value
Well organized, convenient size. Great help in playing the game. We purchased 2. MUCH easier and faster looking up words than using a traditional dictionary. We prefer the paperback version not only because it costs less, but it is also a convenient size.
Nice to have
Very helpful; this was a replacement for an older edition. Having an "official" reference dictionary for challenges is satisfying. Everyone seems to be placated when their word is NOT found, and ecstatic when it IS. This is as it should be, of course.
31 pages missing from dictionary and 31 pages repeated making the dictionary worthless
Pages 1-436 are correct. Pages 437-468 are missing completely. Pages 469-500 are correct. The next page is 469 again instead of 501 and goes through the end of the dictionary page 753. In summary, 31 pages are missing and 31 pages are repeated. I did not play Scrabble and therefore did not catch the manufacturing defect until after the return window closed so I am stuck with a worthless dictionary at a cost of $21.50. I did not give this item any stars! Whoops, had to give it one star to get it submitted. Perhaps Amazon will grant me grace for 2 days and send me a replacement dictionary, I would appreciate that very much. Richard Beaudoin, a frequent customer
Good Greif! Emoji, Bitcoin +
I've been using 3rd edition from 1996! About time to update...and what a great deal! 736 pages including NEW words AND great lists: Q words without U's, Words without Vowels and Words using J, Q, X or Z! Scrabble or Quiddler player's delight! (I ordered a "used" version - and got REALLY lucky. I don't think this book was ever opened!) Now it has been!
Current. THAT is the most important aspect for a Scrabble Dictionary
Our old Scrabble dictionary is about 18 yeras old. It would not verify modern words that have come about with the growing world-wide technologies and social progression in the last couple of decades. If you are competitive when you play scrabble, you really should have an up to date dictionary. And the cost is relatively insignificant.
Still woefully out of date
This latest edition still doesn't include many new additions to the language, especially in the tech/internet realm, while retaining many obsolete, foreign, and scientific terms that no one ever uses. You won't find "wifi," but will find "wifing." I wanted to make "ezine," but that's not included either. Are any of the editors who compiled this dictionary under the age of 80?
This will work!
After reading the reviews I decided to take a chance on the paperback version instead of spending $16 on a hardcover. I must say I'm not disappointed. No missing pages and the small print is fine with me. It's the perfect size to keep on hand while playing the game!
Scrabble Lovers Delight
Got this for our daughter in law who loves scrabble, and uses it in her ESL classroom. She lit up like we had given her a new car. Great accoutrement for anyone who plays Scrabble.
GREAT LARGE PRINT
I belong to a Scrabble club that meets once a week for 4-person table games at a local Senior Center. All of us say 'Thank-you' for the paperback Scrabble Players Dictionary, large print, 6th edition. While some of the pages are a little out of order and there is no listing of all the new words that have been added, it makes a positive difference in carrying this size book and also the time it takes to look up a spelling and challenge a player. Even without glasses the print is quite visible. It's reasonably priced and Amazon's over-night delivery time was great.
Quick Reference for Scrabble play
Good dictionary. However, after a year of hard use, the binding has given way. The book is about 2" thick. I used Elmer's glue and rubber bands to extend life. I'll need to replace eventually. Interesting info on back pages to enhance your Scrabble play.
Very useful
Got this a few days ago and used it last night for the first time. Already stopped by mom from inventing words so that was nice. Very lightweight but also comprehensive. They also include lists of words that are useful but that you wouldn’t necessarily think of. Definitely nice to have while playing
Finally a new Scrabble dictionary!
I bought this for my husband for his birthday. We play quite a bit and we were using a Scrabble dictionary from 1978!! Haha, my husband loves to make up words hoping they will be in the book. Now they just may be in there!
You need one
If you play Scrabble you need the official dictionary. I just wish it was updated annually instead of every few years.
Buy the trade edition
For only 49 cents more the trade edition is a great bargain. The book is larger, with higher quality paper. I'm sure it will hold up better with constant use.
Larger print and new words added
Our Scrabble group had been using the previous edition and decided to order the new one. We really like having more "legal" words to play, and there's the added bonus of having larger print, since we're all senior citizens. Our one complaint, which we also had with the previous edition, is that there is no list of all the 2 letter words. That should have been a no-brainer for the editors, if they actually play Scrabble.
“A must have” for Scrabble players!
No Scrabble game is complete without this fine dictionary. It answers all the ambitious words if they are officially acceptable in the game. The print is big enough and easy to easy. Thumbs up, MW publishers!
Disappointed
Lots of words. However, print is sooo tiny you will need a magnifying glass. (I have 20 20 vision.) Some of the pages are (in old vernacular-typeset off) blurry.; because of this it’s not a quick resource.
we use it all the time
We like to play Scrabble and one has to agree on a dictionary to use. This is obviously, and officially, the best choice. It also gives suggestions of words to memorize, such as words with Q and no U. The only issue is it's different than what the online game Words With Friends use which makes playing between the two difficult.
falling apart AND hard to read
I pre-ordered this paperback version and wish I had gone directly to the hardcopy. The spine cracked very quickly and pages started separating and falling out within a couple of months. The font size is also uncomfortably small.
Thorough and THICK
I find this book a bit thick to use easily when playing Scrabble. It is a great tool and is very thorough, just a bit awkward. Most of my scrabble playing is on-line, so maybe it wouldn't seem so bulky if I were playing around a table with other people.
Honest Game Night
Best book I could have purchased to bring honestly back to game night. Whipping those phones out was removing the integrity of honest playing from the game. If it isn't in the book then it's not counted.
Able to replace worn out dictionary
My mother loves to play scrabble and since she is 95 we play just for fun and use the dictionary to make sure we are spelling words correctly. The last few times i was at her house I noticed her dictionary was falling apart. I got on my phone and had this one delivered to her house.
Handy helper
Perfect for finding those unusual two and three letter words easily in their own front pages' section, although it's not as comprehensive as newer Scrabble books. I keep mine at my side for quick reference. Much easier to use as hands-on book rather than an e-book.
The print seems a bit larger than in previous editions.
As I said, we didn't order a large print edition; however, the print seems larger than in previous editions and the book itself is larger in size. My husband seems very satisfied with the dictionary and gets a lot of use out of it. Happy I ordered it for him.
A Necessity
We're so glad to have this over our older version of the same. The print is larger in this, and there are so many words I KNEW were words, and now can find them. i also got this for my kindle (for traveling) but using the book is easier, as we allow "cheat searches."
OH Boy!
Well my wife wanted this. It creates problems as we often (it seems) make up words that don't exist. We challenge and go to the book. It clears up if it's a scrabble word or not. However, it doesn't stop either of us from making up words.
Well received gift
My elderly friend loves this reference book. She is a great Scrabble fan and player. Most people who play with her agree to allow the use of a dictionary to "check" spelling for words. Keeping an active mind can still be fun!
This dictionary is Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious!
I belong to a Scrabble Club and we cannot play without this dictionary. I bought every member a book for the holidays last year so I didn’t have to continuously share with everyone. They love this book and I do too!
A great assist to the game of Scrabble
We purchased the dictionary to make the game of Scrabble more fun. Having this resource settles a lot of possible disagreements and let's you enjoy the game of Scrabble more.
Great Scrabble partner
We play Scrabble several times a week & this book has helped with new words. Much better than looking up on Google which is what we were doing. Never play without it!
Nice to have when you want to rule the board!
Nice to have handy, but the print is very small. I got this and a new Scrabble game for my sister-in-law, I think I will get a page magnifier and we will be good!
Its all in a word!
My wife and I squabble over Scrabble. This helps us quickly identify legitimate words as well as discover new words that have become approved for Scrabble play.
Expands vocabulary!
My spouse and I are amazed at how many more words are available for scrabble of which we were unaware! Every time we play we learn new words. We also use the dictionary for our Quiddler word games. Great purchase!
Gotta keep the edge
My wife and I play every now and again. I have been unfortunate to get the Q and Z almost every time! I had to get a leg up on my Scrabble vocabulary, I don't mind losing...but I don't like it either. Winning!
Awesome dictionary, use it all the time
This Scrabble dictionary has been invaluable for my brother and me during our weekly scrabble games. Amazing! We really know how to spell many of these words, and some we need to brush up on. We like the basic definition listed, so we enlarge our vocabularies at the same time!
Great Update, New Word Additions
If you play Scrabble and find your games often refer to the dictionary, then this updated version is a MUST HAVE. Great update with new word additions. Hardcover is made well.
Stop lugging a huge dictionary to every Scrabble game!
After buying many dictionaries to carry back and forth to my scrabble games, I finally found this one that works great . "If it isn't there, don't play it" attitude makes life much easier and my arms much lighter. Great for travel.
No defects in this book that I can find
Arrived a little slow due to covid but appears to be in perfect condition. Pages are well centered and this looks to be excellent for me to use as a resource for words with friends.
I need real pages
Should have bought the real book. Will do so soon. Can't work this Kindle version at all.
Would recommend
New words and definitions in this book but would prefer the smaller book. Easier to carry with me .size is why gave a 4..... the book is great!
I needed the updated version.
for the added words.
Office SCRABBLE Dictionary
When every letter counts, this Scrabble Dictionary is a must. It also teaches you words you never new existed. Makes the game more competitive.
Buy this and score!
If you're going to play the game of Scrabble, You need to have this book. If you don't have this book then you won't know all the weird little words that can help increase your score in the game.
BIG book
Even more words. and bigger print. this edition is bigger, so pay attention to the dimensions. the size cost this review one star, because it will not fit in with my quiddler cards in one box. but still a good purchase. perfect for scrabble.
A nice gift set
If you're good with words, then this scrabble will work well. For me it was a gift to a younger person. You might also think about getting the current edition of the scrabble word dictionary - that was the next request after I ordered this.
The newest edition
My husband and I love to play Scrabble, and our last edition of the dictionary wore out. This one is good, a little larger which makes it harder to hold, but lots of new words.
must have for scrabble
It didn't take long for the pages to separate. I have used a lot of tape to keep the sections of the book together. Pathetic...
GREAT for Dedicated Scrabble Players!
I gave this as a gift to a friend. She had an old edition and absolutely loves this one! She plays scrabble on her iPad with players around the world, and this book is really giving her an edge.
Good reference if not questionable
Words that spell letters leave me questioning the authenticity or accuracy of this book. But besides that, the book is pretty useful.
Consider the hardback
Good book, much awaited, but paperback was damaged in the shipping. Disappointed and cannot give it as a gift. Purchase it alone or get the hardback to avoid damage and disappointment.
Good buy.
Had to buy it for when my kids go to the grandparent's for the summer. Would pick them up, look at the board and see words that were just plain wrong. Bought it for Grandma's birthday. No more "Grandma's rules" for scrabble!
Scrabble Dictionary
I had an ancient Scrabble Dictionary. I decided it was time to update to a newer version. Easy to read with concise definitions.
Great
This game needs a dictionary! This dictionary is the only way to go because questioning spelling and words is part of the game.
Small print, but good info.
Small print. We need a magnifier to read. We do like the edition. We play Scrabble often. The hard back is bigger letters.
Okay
I use it for Words with Friends. Some words in it are not acceptable on WWF and some acceptable words are not in it. But it is a good source of ideas.
Well worth the price!
New words have been added since the last dictionary was printed. The type is larger and the pages are of a higher quality paper. Since it is a hardback as opposed to a paperback, it will last a lot longer. I thought it was a bit pricey, but after having used it the last month or two, I see that it is well worth the price. I highly recommend it.
Awesome companion to the game
What a great way to learn new words while boosting your score! This makes the game more fun. Who knew there were so many words that begin with "z".....
Great gift for scrabble enthusiasts
Perfect to keep people from fighting over what dictionary they're using from online. It can all get very confusing. This simplifies that!
Poor quality control
Beginning of dictionary had an uncut section of pages. Also printing was crooked on many pages and the vertical alignment is incorrect. But, all the print is on the page, so we will use it. Here's hoping I don't find any more issues.
Did You Know ??
Did you know that there are new words that are acceptable in the Scrabble game ?? This dictionary includes all the new words that we are now using. Quite interesting....
Much Needed
With all that is going on right now, we wore the old one out. The new one is in better shape andmuch more up to date.
Invaluable!
This is amazing! I have learned so much in the few days I have been using it as an accessory to my computer Scrabble game.
Sometimes the word you hope for is actually in here, and you spelled it right....
and occasionally, the book will break your heart. These revised editions with new words only come out every four years or so, but they are worth having at hand if your Scrabble partner is as sharp as mine is.
Great resource!
For the avid and competitive Scrabble player, this is an awesome tool to help improve your edge! Excellent resource while playing our favorite game!
Challenge your Scrabble opponent with the Scrabble Dictionary.
Any Scrabble player will benefit from the latest edition of the Scrabble Dictionary! It has the latest up-to-date words to make the game challenging for every player.
A MUST HAVE BOOK TO USE WHILE PLAYING WORD GAMES
Great Book to keep up with the extra smart people while playing word games. A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR PLAHING WORD GAMES!!!
No frills solid dictionary
Easy to use dictionary and a few helpful lists. More lists (e.g., three letter x, j and z-words, words with lots of vowels) would be even better, and some guidance on word play strategy scoring would make it a five star product.
How could it be bad?
It's the official dictionary, it's exactly what you need it to be. Nothing more, nothing less. Must have if you are serious about the game
A Must Have
This is a must have for anyone who plays Scrabble! Gives you all the words in the dictionary plus words you probably haven't heard before, but are allowable in Scrabble.
I'm pleased.
I am so pleased with this purchase.. I'm a huge Scrabble fan and its nice to know this dictionary comes compact with more words than the official fourth edition. The cover is nice durable and the book itself is jus awesome.
Works great for my wife to cheat with.
Only odd thing I can say about this, I mean... it's a dictionary to assist in playing scrabble. Is that, while it may contain the latest words, it does not contain all the words that another group of friends have in their older version.
A Must-Have for Scrabblers
The ONLY dictionary you need for Scrabble. This is our family's go-to for Scrabble gaming. Definitely a must-have.
Larger size book.
I like that it’s the newest edition. But I was surprised that it was larger than my friend’s dictionary...same edition.
Light weight but big print
Light weight for our camper van, but print is big and easy to read, includes brief definitions, too, and has so many words. I bought used good condition, but you it looks brand new, so I bought a second one for the condo and it looks new too!
This does help me to play Scrabble games better!
Awesome! This does help me to play Scrabble games better and finding new words to use when I am the DUH!
I Challenge
The first time I played Scrabble this year, I found two words— one missing all together and one with with a definition I ’challenge.’ The words are FOP and XENOPHOBIA. If those two are missing or misdefinded I wonder how many more are missing or misdefined.
print size is really small
The information in it will be good, but will definitely need reading glasses or magnifyer to read it.
Great!!
I purchased this as a gift for my grandmother who plays scrabble all the time. This really comes in handy.
If you have kids, do not play Scrabble without this
Need to expand family vocabulary, want to make up new rules that are fun and engaging, want to see your kids destroy a parent with 2 Masters degrees? Then this book is for you. Outstanding! I've learned words and word origins that I am not sure I would have believed otherwise. Golf clap. Buy it if you like Scrabble. Seriously.
Kindle's 6th Edition Scrabble Dictionary is BAD!!!
I am VERY displeased with this new Kindle app Scrabble Dictionary (6th Edition). It is user UNfriendly in a big way, whereas my 5th edition on the old Kindle app was very easy to use. I think KINDLE thought they were doing us a kindness in adding many new features. If, however, they had made the updated dictionary similar to the 5th edition of the Kindle Scrabble dictionary, I would have been happy. Adding new features under that condition would have been great. This Kindle 6th edition, is BAD, BAD, BAD. Very unhappy customer.
Lots of new words and quick reference lists
Is it actually possibly to have too many Scrabble books in the home?? I don't think so. Good job.
👍
Straight and to the point. No pictures. Word: definition. My current go to dictionary for use with kiddos
A word is a word is a word—or is it?
This dictionary sits at the game table, waiting to settle all disputes. Very highly recommended!!
Does what it says
Your Game will improve 10 fold with this. Study it, use it for challenges .....and if you keep secret, you will win many a challenge.
The Most Recent Edition
We are part of a monthly Scrabble gathering and must always have the most up-to-date word lists.
SMALL Print
Very helpful but the print is extremely small. You'll find "words" you never knew existed in this book including expressions and foreign words which I guess are now considered acceptable Scrabble words.
Very tiny print
Very very small print Can't see words even with glasses Mom 92 yrs old can not use it
For serious srabble players!
It helps me to learn unuasal words to surprise my opponents and they lose a turn for challenging me .
Good purchase, a big help to Our game!
Now as a Scrabbler, I just can’t be beat! It’s a huge help for me as my Wife is an aggressive & competent Scrabbler
Perfect for our needs.
Wanted a dictionary that fit our needs when my scrabble friends get together. This one is perfect, because it also gives the definition. Not all scrabble dictionaries do.
great dictionary and we learn new words.
I just love all my scrabble dictionaries especially the updated number 6 edition. I give them out as gifts to special friends to encourage them to play more often. I play every weekend religiously and we both use the dictionaries.
Great updated Listing of acceptable Scrabble words
If you're a Scrabble player, this is a great book to have. I use it almost every week when I go to play Scrabble at the Senior Center.
Seems to have all the words. 🙂
A nice compact size, good for travel as well as home use. Binding is tight and seems durable. Couldn’t ask for better, actually, especially for the price. Shipped and delivered quickly.
Great resource BUT note my qualification
Liked the new addition; when playing others it is my reference. However it does NOT reflect the current October 7th on line scrabble version.
More Words
There are s lot of foreign words but not as many Mexican or French.More words like GIF, omg,lol for example.
Improved our Scrabble game
Having two Scrabble Dictionaries has really improved our scrabble game night. Some of the words they allow is just insane but hey, it gets me points!
Great for travel
Bought this with a travel scrabble set to use on long flights when there isn't wifi. No complaints.
Good for learning new words
I have enjoyed keeping this paper back book in close reach at so I can learn new words everyday.
Very up to date
We use this in playing scrabble all the time. Great book for reference and even better price!
Play Scrabble with Partner?
Gotta have the Bible of Scrabble. Settles arguments and possible spellings for what we spell incorrectly.
I like it better than going to an online dictionary.
I find using this dictionary easier and faster than using my smartphone to verify words during Scrabble.
Best Scrabble dictionary yet!
We love this Scrabble paperback version. It's very handy and almost fits inside the Scrabble Linen Vintage book game. Man if it had, that would have been really cool. Anyhow, the printing was fine, we checked, no pages stuck together as others have complained. They must've fixed that. New words added!! Get it!
Updated Scrabble Dictionary is for new generation of players
There are so many new words like grr, hm , za, ugh. These are not words for true Scrabble players. This dictionary makes it easier for non spellers. Too much slang.
Falling apart on first use
The first time we used it the back pages were already falling out! Defective. Maybe just a bad batch. Who knows, but kind of bummed it’s fallinv apart from day one!
Up to date edition Scrabble Dictionary
I bought this as a gift for a friend who plays lots of Scrabble. It’s important to buy the latest edition she said.😀
Get up to date!
Perfect Xmas gift for my father who has almost every other scrabble dictionary. It’s fun to look through the years and see how they have changed and what has been added.
Brand New Edition
Always nice to have a new edition fresh from the print! This is my fourth edition, and will be well used. Always available and well priced at Amazon.
Large print
Th print is easy to see although the hardcover is heavy. Paperbacks might be easier to flip through but the large print is easy on the eyes.
RECOMMEND for SCRABBLE BEGINNERS...
I recommend the Merriam-Webster Scrabble Dictionary for beginners. Arrived on time and in great condition.
Love it.
Self explanatory. Scrabble lovers will love this. Excellent gift or stocking stuffer.
Where is the 2 letter word list?!?
Exactly what you'd expect. Has helpful lists like words with Q not including U and the like. BUT, where is the 2 letter word list?!? Pretty much the reason I bought these were for the 2 letter words and you have to search them in the dictionary rather than having a handy little list. Let me down a bit but still a solid dictionary for the price.
Scrabble Fanatic
Scrabble fanatic. My father and I play all the time and we are very particular about sources used to determine which words are allowed. Happy to have the new edition!
Nice book
A must have if you play Scrabble. My doctor asked me if I had any abuse at home. I told him only when I play Scrabble 🤓
Must have for Scrabble players.
Bought as a Christmas gift for family’s game night to go with Scrabble game. Very handy to have.
Word...
Great for Scrabble players. I've found hundreds of words I never knew existed.
True to Form
Dictionary was in perfect condition and just as expected, and arrived quickly.
Compact enough to travel with
It's paperback, so it's small enough to travel with. Glad it includes some new words, like "emoji" and "bitcoin". Not as small and convenient as the travel size Boggle, but close enough
GREAT REPLACEMENT!
It was way past time for a dog eared version to retire. Nice to have all the new words too. Happy with the low price!
Can't play without it.
A must have for playing scrabble. Makes finding and discovering words easy.
Best dictionary ever
I have a 41 year old son who suffers from traumatic brain injury due to an automobile accident. His therapist recommended playing board games to keep his mind active. Scrabble is his favorite.and the larger print on the hardcover is easier for him to read as he lost over half his vision too. This dictionary has been a blessing and a godsend on his long road to recovery.
Yaye for a new edition!
So glad a new edition was purchased. This is so helpful to scrabble players.
Very comprehensive!
I still say a lot of these words shouldn’t be in there, but can’t argue with the scrabble dictionary!!
Scrabble Dictionart sixth edition.
This Scrabble Dictionary has a lot of strange words in it and omits many well used words from the standard dictionary
Scrabble Dictionary
Awesome. Now if the power goes out we can continue playing Scrabble and looking up the words.
Awesome!
Avid Scrabbler so an updated dictionary is awesome! I’m not sure some people would think a new dictionary is good for playing Scrabble as some people take too long on their turn, and this bigger dictionary makes them way worse!
Avid Scrabble Player
Was thrilled to see the Sixth Edition released!!! Highly recommended.
Print is small
Wish I had gotten the hard bound copy. Otherwise, it's exactly the same format at previous additions, plus an amazing selection of new words.
A must for Scrabble.
I use this book to play computer/solitaire scrabble. It’s a great tool. This updated version has many new words that the last edition didn’t have.
Scrabble Helper
It stops any agreements as to if it’s a word or not. It is easy to use and read.
Great book
This version of the Scrabble Dictionary is great - my granddaughter and I love to play Scrabble and now she can learn what the words mean when she is searching for "just the right word" using her letters.
we cheat
regular scrabble players group. We allow dictionaries and increase our vocabulary. amazed by some of the weird words. Our old editions literally fell apart from use. 6th edition additions help our scores and add to the fun and challenge.
Good fun
Amazing how many words are acceptable, feels a bit like cheating , but its still fun.
Great Dictionary
My wife and I love Scrabble and this dictionary helps tremendously.
great reference
we play a lot of scrabble. we are always updating our dictionary. it's great to have the most updated editions
great book, a must have for the game
It's hard to believe how many words don't have vowels, 2 letter words, and so many words that begin with X. It's very interesting and you can learn a lot from it
easy enough for me to carry!
It's a dictionary....you should know what that is used for most people. I don't play without it.
Good to Have
Bought along with the Scrabble game. Good to have on hand. We use this whenever we play Scrabble.
Bought it as gift
I never saw it. I sent it straight to the person I bought it for.
No more arguing! ;-)
No more arguing... we reference this to end the arguments about “words” when playing scrabble as a family.
Latest Scrabble Dictionary Is Awesome!
This is the only Scrabble dictionary my family uses for playing scrabble and believe me we are hard core, by the book scrabble players!
Very pleased
Nice trade (large) paperback size with a readable sized print. Arrived in excellent condition. Very happy with it.
scrabble dictionary
Was as described! Now we have the current issue to play scrabble with.
The dictionary is up to date on words.
This dictionary came in useful when we play Scrabble. 500 pages.
Very helpful
Very useful and informative, a must for Scrabble players!
Scrabble
I do like it, but I like my friends' hard cover larger lettered book better.
Updated dictionary!
I hadn't gotten a Scrabble dictionary in over 20 years. Great to get a new one that includes words now in our vocabulary.
Very good scrabble dictionary
Helpful to verify words you may think are wrong
Big format great
Works great with tired eyes, especially in less than ideal lighting. So nice to have a hard copy to flip through.
Lots of words
This is a wonderful scrable dictionary. Has numerous two-lettr words to help players build points.
